RESUMEN

Conjugated polymers (CPs) have been developed quickly as an emerging functional material with applications in optical and electronic devices, owing to their highly electron-delocalized backbones and versatile side groups for facile processibility, high mechanical strength, and environmental stability. CPs exhibit multistimuli responsive behavior and fluorescence quenching properties by incorporating azobenzene functionality into their molecular structures. Over the past few decades, significant progress has been made in developing functional azobenzene-based conjugated polymers (azo-CPs), utilizing diverse molecular design strategies and synthetic pathways. This article comprehensively reviews the rapidly evolving research field of azo-CPs, focusing on the structural characteristics and synthesis methods of general azo-CPs, as well as the applications of charged azo-CPs, specifically azobenzene-based conjugated polyelectrolytes (azo-CPEs). Based on their molecular structures, azo-CPs can be broadly categorized into three primary types: linear CPs with azobenzene incorporated into the side chain, linear CPs with azobenzene integrated into the main chain, and branched CPs containing azobenzene moieties. These systems are promising for biomedical applications in biosensing, bioimaging, targeted protein degradation, and cellular apoptosis.

RESUMEN

This clinical report describes a digital workflow for the rehabilitation of an 8-year-old patient diagnosed with ectodermal dysplasia. Based on the patient's digital primary casts, small custom trays and an arch tracer were designed and 3-dimensionally printed. The mandibular custom tray and retention plate with a tracing screw were assembled with tracing plate, forming an individual assembled mini-arch tracer system to record the jaw relationship together with a conventional facebow and a digital articulator. In addition, composite resin injection guides were designed and fabricated to form the predesigned targeted shape of the abutment teeth and provide a buffer. By following this workflow, complete overdentures with good fit, occlusion, and acceptable esthetics were delivered.

INTRODUCTION: The computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology has revolutionised dentistry at present. An operator's skills can affect the overall clinical duration and marginal accuracy of the prosthesis fabricated through this workflow. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of CAD/CAM hands-on training compared with that of a self-instructional video on the performance of dental students in digital impression and fabrication of a CAD/CAM crown. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 30 undergraduate dental students were shown a CEREC demonstration video. Each operator then captured a digital impression using the intra-oral scanner, and a crown was subsequently milled. All participants underwent a training course before repeating the process. Marginal discrepancy for each crown on its abutment tooth was measured before and after training using a stereomicroscope and was evaluated using Wilcoxon signed rank test. The duration taken for the process was recorded before and after training and evaluated using paired t-test. RESULTS: The overall mean ±standard deviation marginal adaptation for the CEREC crowns was 78.15 ± 42.83 µm before training and 52.41 ± 17.12 µm after training. The Wilcoxon signed rank test found significant difference (p < .05) in terms of marginal adaptation of crowns fabricated before and after training. Paired t-tests showed that the time efficiency after training significantly improved compared with that before training. CONCLUSIONS: Training with guided feedback is crucial to improve the time efficiency of making a digital impression and marginal adaptation of fixed prosthesis using the CAD/CAM technology.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis and osteoporosis are most popular among aging population and both conditions might be linked, even though, this suggestion still until now debated. OBJECTIVES: A meta-analysis on previous investigations has been used to evaluate the correlation between periodontitis and osteoporosis to determine whether osteoporosis is a local indicator of bone loss, or whether it is depending on or related to periodontitis causes. METHODS: The literature database, including but not excluding, The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Science Citation Index Expanded, was searched in this work during Feb, 2020. We conducted the investigations contain cohort studies, cross-sectional studies, as well as case-control studies with relative risk (RR) or odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup and Sensitivity analysis were also applied to identify heterogeneity sources. RESULTS: 23 observational studies with 12 cohorts, 7 cross-sectional and 4 case-control studies, were included, together with 2,157,037 participants. Osteoporosis patients were more exposed to periodontitis (OR, 1.96; 95% CI, 1.50-2.54). Subgroup analyses showed that the higher risk of osteoporosis in periodontitis patients exists in both cross-sectional studies (OR, 2.17; 95% CI, 1.80-2.61) and case-control studies (OR 2.63; 95% CI, 1.69-4.09), and marginally in cohort studies (OR, 1.70; 95% CI, 1.16-2.49). CONCLUSION: Review analyses have shown that osteoporosis is closely related to the increased risk of periodontitis in the future. Dental specialists better to understand the potential association between periodontitis and osteoporosis.

PURPOSE: Many epidemiologic studies have reported an association of poor oral health, especially periodontal disease (PD) and tooth loss, with the risk of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN). However, these studies have yielded inconsistent results. Therefore, the present study investigated whether poor oral health is an independent predictor of SCCHN through a meta-analysis of observational studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched for relevant observational studies of the association between oral health and risk of SCCHN conducted up to October 2017. The meta-analysis was conducted using STATA 12.0 (StataCorp, College Station, TX). A fixed- or random-effects model was applied to evaluate pooled risk estimates, and sensitivity and subgroup analyses were performed to identify sources of heterogeneity and pooled estimation. Publication bias was assessed using the Begg test, the Egger test, and funnel plots. RESULTS: Twenty-seven relevant observational studies were identified, consisting of 24 case-and-control studies, 2 prospective studies, and 1 cross-sectional study, with 26,750 participants. Notably, oral health correlated meaningfully with SCCHN (odds ratio [OR] = 2.24; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.77-2.82). In subgroup analyses, participants with PD (OR = 2.52; 95% CI, 1.43-4.44) had a higher risk of developing SCCHN than those with tooth loss (OR = 2.13; 95% CI, 1.63-2.78). The risk estimates exhibited substantial heterogeneity. Evidence of publication bias was limited. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this meta-analysis suggest that patients with tooth loss or PD might face a substantial and independent risk of SCCHN, even after adjusting for smoking and alcohol consumption. However, the pooled estimates from observational studies could not establish a causative relation among PD, tooth loss, and SCCHN. Additional investigations of this correlation are warranted.

PURPOSE: Prior studies have defined the accuracy of intraoral scanner (IOS) systems but the accuracy of the digital static interocclusal registration function of these systems has not been reported. This study compared the three-dimensional (3D) accuracy of the digital static interocclusal registration of 3 IOS systems using the buccal bite scan function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three IOS systems compared were 3MTM True Definition Scanner (TDS), TRIOS Color (TRC), and CEREC AC with CEREC Omnicam (CER). Using each scanner, 7 scans (n = 7) of the mounted and articulated SLA master models were obtained. The measurement targets (SiN reference spheres and implant abutment analogs) were in the opposing models at the right (R), central (C), and left (L) regions; abutments #26 and #36, respectively. A coordinate measuring machine with metrology software compared the physical and virtual targets to derive the global 3D linear distortion between the centroids of the respective target reference spheres and abutment analogs (dRR , dRC , dRL , and dRM ) and 2D distances between the pierce points of the abutment analogs (dXM , dYM , dZM ), with 3 measurement repetitions for each scan. RESULTS: Mean 3D distortion ranged from -471.9 to 31.7 µm for dRR , -579.0 to -87.0 µm for dRC , -381.5 to 69.4 µm for dRL , and -184.9 to -23.1 µm for dRM . Mean 2D distortion ranged from -225.9 to 0.8 µm for dXM , -130.6 to -126.1 µm for dYM , and -34.3 to 26.3 µm for dZM . Significant differences were found for interarch distortions across the three systems. For dRR and dRL , all three test groups were significantly different, whereas for dRC , the TDS was significantly different from the TRC and CER. For 2D distortion, significant differences were found for dXM only. CONCLUSIONS: Interarch and global interocclusal distortions for the three IOS systems were significantly different. TRC performed overall the best and TDS was the worst. The interarch (dRR , dRC , dRL ) and interocclusal (dXM ) distortions observed will affect the magnitude of occlusal contacts of restorations clinically. The final restoration may be either hyperoccluded or infraoccluded, requiring compensations during the CAD design stage or clinical adjustments at issue.

BACKGROUND: Poor endosomal release is a major barrier of polyplex-mediated gene transfection. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are commonly used to improve polyethylenimine (PEI)-mediated gene transfection by increasing endosomal release. In the present study, we designed novel pH-sensitive peptides that highly enhance transfection efficiency compared to their parent peptides. METHODS: Two analogues of melittin (Mel) and RV-23 (RV) were synthesized by replacing the positively-charged residues in their sequences with glutamic acid residues. The pH-sensitive lysis ability of the peptides, the effect of the peptides on physicochemical characteristics, the intracellular trafficking, the transfection efficiency, and the cytotoxicity of the polyplexes were determined. RESULTS: The acidic peptides showed pH-sensitive lytic activity. The hemolytic activity of acidic peptides at pH 5.0 was higher than that at pH 7.4. The incorporation of acidic peptides did not affect the DNA binding ability of PEI but affected the physicochemical characteristics of the PEI/DNA polyplexes, which may be beneficial for endosomal release and gene transfection. The incorporation of acidic peptides into PEI/DNA polyplexes enhanced the PEI-mediated transfection efficiency corresponding to up to 42-fold higher luciferase activity compared to that of PEI alone. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the present study indicate that replacement of positively-charged residues with glutamic acid residues in the AMP sequence yields pH-sensitive peptides, which enhance the transfection efficiency of PEI/DNA polyplexes in various cell lines.

PURPOSE: Third molars (M3s) have been hypothesized to be associated with the risk of mandibular angle fracture and mandibular condylar fracture. The authors systematically estimated the relative risk (RR) of M3 status for the development of mandibular angle fracture and mandibular condylar fracture through a meta-analysis of cohort studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this systematic review, the PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases were searched from inception to October 2016. The predictor of risk was the presence or absence of M3s. The primary outcome was the RR of mandibular angle or condylar fracture. A fixed- or a random-effects model was applied to evaluate the pooled risk estimates. Sensitivity analysis also was performed to identify the potential sources of heterogeneity. Publication bias was assessed by the Begg and Egger tests. RESULTS: Overall, 13 retrospective cohort studies were included. Of these, 13 reported the association between M3s and mandibular angle fracture, and 5 reported the association with mandibular condylar fracture. Patients with M3s had an increased risk of mandibular angle fractures (RR = 2.63; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.15-3.21) but a decreased risk of mandibular condylar fractures (RR = 0.47; 95% CI, 0.25-0.86). Substantial heterogeneity in the risk estimates was found. No evidence of publication bias was found. CONCLUSION: The present meta-analysis provides further evidence associating the presence of M3s with an increased risk of mandibular angle fractures and a simultaneously decreased risk of mandibular condylar fracture. Because of potentially more serious complications associated with condylar fracture, clinicians should carefully consider the decision to remove M3s to decrease the risk of mandibular angle fracture.

Series of anionic flocculants with outstanding flocculation performance, poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide)/diatomite composite flocculants (PAAD) were successfully prepared through aqueous solution copolymerization and applied to flocculate from oil-field fracturing waste-water. The structure of PAAD was characterized by Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy, (13)C nuclear magnetic resonance and X-ray diffraction tests, and its properties were systematically evaluated by viscometer, thermogravimetry analysis and flocculation measurements. Furthermore, the influences of various reaction parameters on the apparent viscosity of flocculant solution were studied, and the optimum synthesis condition was determined. The novel composite flocculants exhibited outstanding flocculation properties. Specifically, the dosage of composite flocculants that could make the transmittance of treated wastewater exceed 90% was only approximately 12-35 ppm, which was far lower than that of conventional flocculants. Meanwhile, the settling time was lower than 5 s, which was similar to that of conventional flocculants. This was because PAAD flocculants had a higher absorption capacity, and larger chain extending space than conventional linear flocculants, which could refrain from the entanglement of linear polymer chains and significantly improve flocculation capacity.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Traditionally, the roots of Kaempferia galanga has been used to treat high blood pressure, chest pain, headache, toothache, rheumatism, indigestion, cough, inflammation and cancer in Asia. Nevertheless, most of its pharmacological studies were focused on ethanolic extracts and volatile oils. The exact active chemical constituents and their underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood, especially towards its anti-cancer treatment. Inhibition of angiogenesis is an important atrategy to inhibit tumor growth. It has been reported that the low polar component of the plant possessed anti-angiogenic activity. Yet, the potent compound which is responsible for the effect and its molecular mechanism has not been reported. AIM OF THE STUDY: To determine the potent anti-angiogenic component in K.galanga and its mechanism of action. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The low polar components of the plant were concentrated using the methods of supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), subcritical extraction (SCE) and steam distillation (SD). The anti-angiogenic activity of the three extracts was evaluated using a zebrafish model. The content of the active compound in those extracts was determined with HPLC analysis. The in-vitro and in-vivo activity of the isolated compound was evaluated using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) model, the aortic ring assay and the matrigel plug assay, respectively. Its molecular mechanism was further studied by the western blotting assay and computer-docking experiments. Besides, its cytotoxicity on cancer and normal cell lines was evaluated using the cell-counting kit. RESULTS: HPLC results showed that trans-ethyl p-methoxycinnamate (TEM) was the major component of the extracts. The extract of SFE showed the best effect as it has the highest content of TEM. TEM could inhibit vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-induced viability, migration, invasion and tube formation in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) in vitro. Moreover, it inhibited VEGF-induced sprout formation ex vivo and vessel formation in vivo. Mechanistic study showed that it could suppress tyrosine kinase activity of the receptor of VEGF (VEGFR2) and alter its downstream signaling pathways. In addition, the molecular docking showed that the binding of TEM and VEGFR2 is stable, which mainly attributed to the non-covalent binding interaction. Beside, TEM possessed little toxicity to both cancer and normal cells. CONCLUSION: TEM is the major anti-angiogenic component present in K. galanga and its anti-angiogenic property rather than toxicity provides scientific basis for the traditional use of K. galanga in cancer treatment.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that reducing the positive charge of melittin could increase endosomal release activity and improve branched polyethylenimine (BPEI)-mediated transfection. AR-23 is a melittin-related peptide from Rana tagoi, which shows 81% sequence identity with melittin but has less positively-charged residues than melittin. The present study aimed to investigate the mechanistic and functional aspects of the interaction of AR-23 with mammalian cells and thus improve BPEI-mediated gene transfection. METHODS: AR23 and two AR-23 analogs (AR-20 without positively-charged residues and AR-26 with the same positively-charged residues as melittin) were analyzed. Circular dichroism (CD) spectrometry was used to analyze the secondary structures of the peptides. Peptide-induced depolarization of cell membrane, the membrane-lytic activity of the peptides, and their potency with respect to enhancing the cellular uptake of calcein were evaluated. The physicochemical characters of complexes were measured and the effect of the peptides on BPEI-mediated transfection was determined. RESULTS: The CD spectra results indicated that a positive charge in AR-23 played a crucial role in maintaining the α-helical conformation, whereas an extra positive charge could not increase α-helical formation. AR-23 displayed a similar depolarization ability to melittin. However, AR-23 showed a lower membrane lytic activity under physiological conditions and a higher lytic activity at endosomal pH than melittin and AR-26, which possess more positive charges. Compared to melittin and AR-26, AR-23, with a higher endosomal escaping activity, resulted in a higher enhancement of BPEI-mediated gene transfection, as well as the maintainance of a lower cytotoxicity. CONCLUSIONS: We suggest that AR-23 may be considered as a potential enhancer for improving the transfection efficiency of cationic polymers.

BACKGROUND: Botulinum toxin (BoNT) injection is an important adjunctive method to treat sialorrhea. The purpose of this systematic review was to analyze the effect and safety of BoNT injections in the intervention of sialorrhea with Parkinson's disease (PD). METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web Of Science (WOS), Scopus, Cochrane CENTRAL, and Embase from inception until April 2022. Randomized controlled trials or randomized crossover trials comparing BoNT with placebo in sialorrhea with PD were eligible. PRISMA guidelines were used to carry out the meta-analysis. The Drooling Severity Frequency Scale (DSFS) score and the number of adverse events (AEs) were the primary and secondary outcomes, respectively. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) and risk differences (RDs) are used to express continuous and categorical outcomes, respectively. Heterogeneity among these studies was evaluated using I2 tests. We used the GRADE tool to assess the certainty of evidence (COE). RESULTS: Eight articles involving 259 patients compared BoNT injections with a placebo for PD with sialorrhea. This meta-analysis showed a significant reduction in DSFS scores between BoNT injections and placebo (SMD=-0.98; 95% CI, -1.27 to 0.70, p<0.001; COE: high). This meta-analysis showed a significant difference in AEs between BoNT injections and placebo (RD=0.15; 95% CI, 0.05 to 0.24, p=0.002; COE: low). CONCLUSIONS: The pooled results suggest that BoNT injections have some effect on DSFS scores with sialorrhea caused by PD. There are also mild adverse events, which generally recover within a week or so. The results indicate that BoNT injection is one of the treatments for sialorrhea caused by PD, but we need to pay attention to adverse events. In addition, the follow-up time was extended to observe oral hygiene, ulceration or dental caries, and digestive function. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Our review protocol was registered on PROSPERO (42021288334).

Zwitterionic polymers have attracted considerable attention because of their anti-adsorption and unique anti-polyelectrolyte effects and was widely used in surface modification. In this study, zwitterionic copolymers (poly (sulfobetaine methacrylate-co-butyl acrylate) (pSB) coating on the surface of a hydroxylated titanium sheet using surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) was successfully constructed. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Water contact angle (WCA) analysis proved the successful preparation of the coating. The swelling effect caused by the anti-polyelectrolyte effect was reflected in the simulation experiment in vitro, and this coating can promote the proliferation and osteogenesis of MC3T3-E1. Therefore, this study provides a new strategy for designing multifunctional biomaterials for implant surface modifications.

BACKGROUND: Melittin is a commonly used cell-penetrating peptide (CPP) for improving branched polyethylenimine (BPEI)-mediated gene transfection. However, its application is limited owing to the cytotoxicity generated by the lytic activity at neutral pH. In the present study, we report two truncated peptides from melittin and florae with improved transfection efficiency. METHODS: Two truncated peptides consisting of 1-20 residues of melittin (MT20) and florae (FL20) were synthesized. Circular dichroism (CD) spectrometry was used to analyze the secondary structures of the peptides. The membrane-lytic activity of the peptides and their potency in enhancing cellular uptake of calcein were evaluated. The peptides and BPEI mixtures were mixed with plasmid DNA to prepare peptide/BPEI/DNA complexes. The physicochemical characters of complexes were measured and the effect of the peptides on BPEI-mediated transfection was determined. RESULTS: CD analysis and structure observation showed that the truncated peptides have α-helical conformation, which was necessary for penetrating activity. The truncated peptides exhibited several advantages than their parent peptides: (i) they showed higher hemolytic potency in acidic pH but lower lytic activity than their parent peptides in neutral pH; (ii) enhanced calcein efficiently release from both early and late endosome; (iii) they did not affect the DNA-binding affinity of BPEI and the physicochemical characteristics of BPEI/DNA complexes. Moreover, the peptides could increase BPEI-mediated transfection efficiency in different cell lines (293FT, B16F10 and CHO-K1) by simply mixing with BPEI, without causing cytotoxicity. CONCLUSIONS: The results obtained in the present study indicate that the truncated peptides with higher endosomal disrupting activity were better enhancers for increasing transfection efficiency.

Rod-like particles have attracted increasing attention because of their unique shape-dependent properties, which enable their superior performance compared to their isotropic counterparts. Thus, rod-like particles have potential applications in many fields, especially in biomedicine. However, the fabrication of uniform rod-like particles is challenging because of the principle of interfacial energy minimization. Herein, we present a facile, rapid, and cost-effective strategy for preparing starch-based microrods with tunable aspect ratios via shear-assisted antisolvent-induced nanoprecipitation and solidification. The preformed spherical particles swollen by the mixed solvent were elongated by the shear force and solidified in rod-like shape by antisolvent induction. The resulting starch-based microrods can encapsulate hydrophobic active substances and be modified with functional groups, indicating their potential applications as drug carriers and biologically active materials. The formation mechanism of the starch-based microrods discovered in this study provides a new perspective on the fabrication of rod-like polymer particles.

Adipic acid, an industrially-important chemical that can be sustainably derived from biomass and post-consumer nylon, is traditionally overlooked as a linker for MOFs. Herein, we report the first direct one-pot method for synthesising UiO-66 MOFs with an unprecedented 69 mol% adipate content, as well as the feasibility of these materials for MOF defect engineering by rapid and selective adipate thermolysis.

Linear reduction-degradable cationic polymers with different secondary amine densities (S2 and S3) and their nonreducible counterparts (C2 and C3) were synthesized by Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) step-growth polymerization of the dialkyne-oligoamine monomers and the diazide monomers. These polymers were studied with a goal of developing a set of new gene carriers. The buffering capacity and DNA binding ability of these polymers were evaluated by acid-base titration, gel retardation, and ethidium bromide (EB) exclusion assay. The polymers with lower amine density exhibit a weaker DNA-binding ability but a stronger buffering capacity in the range of pH 5.1 and 7.4. Particle size and zeta-potential measurements demonstrate that the polymers with higher amine density condense pDNA to form polyplexes with smaller sizes, while the disulfide bond in the backbone shows a negative effect on the condensing capability of the polymers, resulting in the formation of polyplexes with large size and nearly neutral surface. The reduction-sensitive polyplexes formed by polymer S2 or S3 can be disrupted by dithiothreitol (DTT) to release free DNA, which has been proven by the combination of gel retardation, EB exclusion assay, particles sizing, and zeta potential measurements. Cell viability measurements by MTT assay demonstrate that the reduction-degradable polymers (S2 and S3) have little cytotoxicity while the nonreducible polymers (C2 and C3) show obvious cytotoxicity, in particular, at high N/P ratios. In vitro transfection efficiencies of these polymers were evaluated using EGFP and luciferase plasmids as the reporter genes. Polymers S3 and S2 show much higher efficiencies than the nonreducible polymers C3 and C2 in the absence of 10% serum; unexpectedly, the lowest transfection efficiency has been observed for polymer S3 in the presence of serum.

BACKGROUND: The protective role of helmet accessories in moderating stress load generated by explosion shock waves of explosive devices is usually neglected. OBJECTIVE: In the presented study, the protective role of the helmet chinstrap against the impulse and overpressure experienced by the maxillofacial region were examined. METHODS: The explosion shock wave and skull interaction were investigated under three different configurations: (1) unprotected skull, (2) skull with helmet (3) skull with helmet and chinstrap. For this purpose, a 3D finite element model (FEM) was constructed to mimic the investigated biomechanics module. Three working conditions were set according to different explosive charges and distances to represent different load conditions. Case 1: 500 mg explosive trinitrotoluene (TNT), 3 cm, case 2: 1000 mg TNT, 3 cm, and case 3: 1000 mg TNT and 6 cm distance to the studied object. The explosion effect was discussed by examining the shock wave stress flow pattern. Three points were selected on the skull and the stress curve of each point position were illustrated for each case study. RESULTS: The results showed that the helmet chinstrap can reduce the explosive injuries and plays a protective role in the maxillofacial region, especially for the mandible.

Metal coordination-driven composite systems have excellent stability and pH-responsive ability, making them suitable for specific drug delivery in physiological conditions. In this study, an anionic conjugated polymer PPEIDA with a poly(p-phenylene ethynylene) backbone and iminodiacetic acid (IDA) side chains is used as a drug carrier to construct a class of pH-responsive nanoparticles, PPEIDA-Cu-DOX conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPNs), by taking advantage of the metal coordination interaction of Cu2+ with PPEIDA and the drug doxorubicin (DOX). PPEIDA-Cu-DOX CPNs have high drug loading and encapsulation efficiency (EE), calculated to be 54.30 ± 1.10 and 95.80 ± 0.84%, respectively. Due to the good spectral overlap, Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) takes place between PPEIDA and the drug DOX, which enables the observation of the loading and the release of DOX from CPNs in an acidic environment by monitoring fluorescence emission changes. Therefore, PPEIDA-Cu-DOX CPNs can also be used in real-time cell imaging to monitor drug release in addition to delivering DOX targeting tumor cells. Compared with free DOX, PPEIDA-Cu-DOX CPNs show a similar inhibition to tumor cells and lower toxicity to normal cells. Our results demonstrate the feasibility and potential of constructing pH-responsive CPNs via metal-ligand coordination interactions for cancer treatment.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to measure the coronal alignment of the lumbar spine of patients in the right lateral decubitus position on a hinged Jackson operating table with the following 3 table positions: neutral and right and left 20-degree flexion. METHODS: We analyzed the data of 23 patients who underwent OLIF. Spinal alignment was quantified using the coronal Cobb angle from L1 to S1, measured on anterior-posterior radiographs obtained preoperatively, after induction of anesthesia, with patients in the right lateral decubitus position, for the following 3 positions of the Jackson hinged operating table: neutral, right 20-degree flexion, and left 20-degree flexion. The Cobb angle at each position, the change in the Cobb angle, and the effective range of motion (%) were obtained from neutral to right and left 20-degree flexion. Alignment was compared between the 3 positions, and the range of motion was compared between men and women. RESULTS: The Cobb angle was different in all 3 positions of the table (P < 0.0001): -7.0 ± 8.7°, neutral; 2.8 ± 7.6°, right 20-degree flexion; and -14.7 ± 7.8°, left 20-degree flexion. The change in Cobb angle and the effective range of motion were greater in women (10.9 ± 2.8° and 55%) than in men (6.7 ± 5.8° and 34%) from the neutral to right 20-degree flexion position (P = 0.0298). CONCLUSIONS: The coronal alignment of the lumbar spine of patients in the right lateral decubitus position on a flat operating table (neutral position) was convex. The right 20-degree flexion position of the hinged operating table yielded less coronal plane lumbar spine deformity, with greater deformity in women.
