RESUMEN

Currently, there is an inherent contradiction between the multifunctionality and excellent biocompatibility of anticancer drug nanocarriers, which limits their application. Therefore, to overcome this limitation, we aimed to develop a biocompatible drug delivery system for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In this study, we employed poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) as the fundamental framework of the nanocarrier and utilized the emulsion solvent evaporation method to fabricate nanoparticles loaded with paclitaxel (PTX), known as PTX-PHBV NPs. To enhance the tumor-targeting capability, a dopamine self-polymerization strategy was employed to form a pH-sensitive coating on the surface of the nanoparticles. Then, folic acid (FA)-targeting HCC was conjugated to the nanoparticles with a polydopamine (PDA) coating by using the Michael addition reaction, resulting in the formation of HCC-targeted nanoparticles (PTX-PHBV@PDA-FA NPs). The PTX-PHBV@PDA-FA NPs were characterized and analyzed by using dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy, fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. Encouragingly, PTX-PHBV@PDA-FA NPs exhibited remarkable anticancer efficacy in an HCC xenograft mouse model. Furthermore, compared to raw PTX, PTX-PHBV@PDA-FA NPs showed less toxicity in vivo. In conclusion, these results demonstrate the potential of PTX-PHBV@PDA-FA NPs for HCC treatment and biocompatibility.

Despite the increasing prevalence of atmospheric nanoplastics (NPs), there remains limited research on their phytotoxicity, foliar absorption, and translocation in plants. In this study, we aimed to fill this knowledge gap by investigating the physiological effects of tomato leaves exposed to differently charged NPs and foliar absorption and translocation of NPs. We found that positively charged NPs caused more pronounced physiological effects, including growth inhibition, increased antioxidant enzyme activity, and altered gene expression and metabolite composition and even significantly changed the structure and composition of the phyllosphere microbial community. Also, differently charged NPs exhibited differential foliar absorption and translocation, with the positively charged NPs penetrating more into the leaves and dispersing uniformly within the mesophyll cells. Additionally, NPs absorbed by the leaves were able to translocate to the roots. These findings provide important insights into the interactions between atmospheric NPs and crop plants and demonstrate that NPs' accumulation in crops could negatively impact agricultural production and food safety.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic age-related disease that was recently found as a secondary aging pattern regulated by the senescence associated secretory phenotype (SASP). The purpose of this study is to detect the potential efficacy and the specific mechanisms of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) healing of age-related inflammation (known as inflammaging) in diabetic periodontitis. Diabetic periodontitis (DP) mice were established by intraperitoneal streptozotocin (STZ) injection and oral P. gingivalis inoculation. Low-level laser irradiation (810 nm, 0.1 W, 398 mW/cm2, 4 J/cm2, 10 s) was applied locally around the periodontal lesions every 3 days for 2 consecutive weeks. Micro-CT and hematoxylin-eosin (HE) stain was analyzed for periodontal soft tissue and alveolar bone. Western blots, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence staining were used to evaluate the protein expression changes on SASP and GLUT1/mTOR pathway. The expression of aging-related factors and SASP including tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-1ß, and IL-6 were reduced in periodontal tissue of diabetic mice. The inhibitory effect of LLLT on GLUT1/mTOR pathway was observed by detecting the related factors mTOR, p-mTOR, GLUT1, and PKM2. COX, an intracytoplasmic photoreceptor, is a key component of the anti-inflammatory effects of LLLT. After LLLT treatment a significant increase in COX was observed in macrophages in the periodontal lesion. Our findings suggest that LLLT may regulate chronic low-grade inflammation by modulating the GLUT1/mTOR senescence-related pathway, thereby offering a potential treatment for diabetic periodontal diseases.

Fiber-based flexible sensors have promising application potential in human motion and healthcare monitoring, owing to their merits of being lightweight, flexible, and easy to process. Now, high-performance elastic fiber-based strain sensors with high sensitivity, a large working range, and excellent durability are in great demand. Herein, we have easily and quickly prepared a highly sensitive and durable fiber-based strain sensor by dip coating a highly stretchable polyurethane (PU) elastic fiber in an MXene/waterborne polyurethane (WPU) dispersion solution. Benefiting from the electrostatic repulsion force between the negatively charged WPU and MXene sheets in the mixed solution, very homogeneous and stable MXene/WPU dispersion was successfully obtained, and the interconnected conducting networks were correspondingly formed in a coated MXene/WPU shell layer, which makes the as-prepared strain sensor exhibit a gauge factor of over 960, a large sensing range of over 90%, and a detection limit as low as 0.5% strain. As elastic fiber and mixed solution have the same polymer constitute, and tight bonding of the MXene/WPU conductive composite on PU fibers was achieved, enabling the as-prepared strain sensor to endure over 2500 stretching-releasing cycles and thus show good durability. Full-scale human motion detection was also performed by the strain sensor, and a body posture monitoring, analysis, and correction prototype system were developed via embedding the fiber-based strain sensors into sweaters, strongly indicating great application prospects in exercise, sports, and healthcare.

Chronic apical periodontitis (CAP) is characterized by inflammation and destruction of the apical periodontium that is of pulpal origin, appearing as an apical radiolucent area, and does not produce clinical symptoms. Little is known about whether the PD-1/PD-L1 ratio is associated with the balance between RANKL and OPG in CAP. The relationship between PD-1/PD-L1 and RANKL/OPG in CAP is investigated in this study. A CAP rat model was established using Sprague-Dawley rats. The pulp chambers were exposed to the oral cavity to allow bacterial contamination. The apical tissues of the bilateral mandibular first molars were analyzed for histological morphology using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining. Immunohistochemistry and qRT-PCR were used to determine the expression of PD-1, PD-L1, OPG, and RANKL mRNA and proteins in periapical tissues and mandibular samples, respectively. The radiological images indicated a poorly defined low-density shadow and alveolar bone resorption after periodontitis induction. Histological analysis revealed an infiltration of inflammatory cells and alveolar bone resorption in the periapical tissues. Mandibular mRNA and periapical protein expression of PD-1, PD-L1, and RANKL was upregulated 7-28 days after periodontitis induction, while the expression of OPG was downregulated. No significant relationship was observed between PD-1/PD-L1 and RANKL/OPG at either mRNA or protein levels in CAP. There is an increased expression of PD-1, PD-L1, and RANKL and a decreased expression of OPG, indicating progression of CAP.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to explore the bidirectional causal relationship between immune cell phenotypes and chronic periodontitis using a Mendelian randomization framework. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Through a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis, this research examined genetic data related to 731 immune cell traits and chronic periodontitis. Instrumental variables were chosen based on their genetic links to either immune traits or periodontitis. Various statistical techniques, including MR-Egger regression, weighted median, and inverse-variance weighted (IVW) analysis, were employed to determine the causal connections. RESULTS: Predominantly using the IVW method, 26 distinct immune phenotypes were identified as potentially influencing periodontitis (P < 0.05). Conversely, periodontitis potentially affected 33 different immune phenotypes (P < 0.05). The results for pleiotropy and sensitivity tests were stable. However, these associations lost significance after adjusting for the False Discovery Rate. CONCLUSION: This study uncovers a complex bidirectional causal relationship between certain immune cell phenotypes and chronic periodontitis, underscoring the intricate interaction between the immune system and the pathogenesis of periodontal disease.

OBJECTIVES: To identify the patterns and influencing factors of oral health service utilization among college students, and further to provide scientific evidence for policy making on oral health education and behavioral interventions for the college population. METHODS: The study population was college students in Southern China. Totally 678 students participated in the survey. A self-designed questionnaire based on Anderson's model (predisposing factors, enabling factors, need factors) was used to survey college students. Descriptive statistics, χ2 test, and logistic regression were used to analyze influence factors of oral health service utilization among college students. RESULTS: The utilization rate of oral health service in the past 12 months was 30.2%. The primary type of oral health service was treatment (59.6%), and only 12.8% were for prevention. There were 39% of the participants having oral health diseases, of which dental caries (25.7%) and oral bleeding (22.2%) were the main problems. The results from logistic regression analysis revealed that students with better beliefs (OR = 1.84, 95% CI:=1.02-3.43), frequent consumption of sugary drinks (OR = 2.90, 95% CI:=1.90-4.47), teeth brushing frequency > = 2 times per day (OR = 2.09, 95% CI = 1.24-3.61), frequent floss utilization (OR = 2.63, 95% CI = 1.21-5.76), dental caries (OR = 2.07, 95% CI = 1.35-3.17) used oral health services higher, while those lived in rural areas (OR:0.52, 95% CI = 0.34-0.80), and had only a fair concern (OR = 0.48, 95% CI = 0.31-0.74) or no concern (OR = 0.26, 95% CI = 0.08-0.67) on oral health utilized oral health services lower. CONCLUSIONS: Chinese college students demonstrate some knowledge and attitudes towards oral health. However, they tend to neglect oral hygiene and have limited understanding of their own oral issues. Furthermore, the utilization of oral services, such as treatment, remains remarkably low, despite the availability of long-term and favorable health insurance policies. The utilization of oral health services among college students is influenced by various factors, including residing in rural areas, consuming sugary beverages on a daily basis, brushing teeth at least twice a day, and practicing flossing.

Xeno-nucleic acids (XNAs) are synthetic genetic polymers with improved biological stabilities and offer powerful molecular tools such as aptamers and catalysts. However, XNA application has been hindered by a very limited repertoire of tool enzymes, particularly those that enable de novo XNA synthesis. Here we report that terminal deoxynucleotide transferase (TdT) catalyzes untemplated threose nucleic acid (TNA) synthesis at the 3' terminus of DNA oligonucleotide, resulting in DNA-TNA chimera resistant to exonuclease digestion. Moreover, TdT-catalyzed TNA extension supports one-pot batch preparation of biostable chimeric oligonucleotides, which can be used directly as staple strands during self-assembly of DNA origami nanostructures (DONs). Such TNA-protected DONs show enhanced biological stability in the presence of exonuclease I, DNase I and fetal bovine serum. This work not only expands the available enzyme toolbox for XNA synthesis and manipulation, but also provides a promising approach to fabricate DONs with improved stability under the physiological condition.

AIM: To explore whether hyperglycaemia plays a role in periodontal inflamm-aging by inducing phenotypical transformation of macrophages, as well as the potential mechanism via SET domain-bifurcated histone lysine methyltransferase 1 (SETDB1). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A hyperglycaemic mouse model was established using streptozotocin injection. The alveolar bone was analysed using micro-computed tomography. Periodontal inflamm-aging was detected using western blotting, quantitative real-time PCR and immunohistochemical analysis. In vitro, RAW 264.7 macrophages were incubated with various doses of glucose. siRNA or overexpression plasmids were used to determine the regulatory mechanism of SETDB1 in macrophage senescence and inflamm-aging under hyperglycaemic conditions. Expression and distribution of SETDB1 and long interspersed element 1 (LINE-1) in gingival tissues of patients with or without diabetes were detected using immunofluorescent staining. RESULTS: SETDB1 expression in the periodontal tissues of patients and mice with diabetes was down-regulated compared with that in non-diabetic controls. SETDB1 deficiency induced senescence-like phenotypical changes in macrophages, which aggravated periodontal inflamm-aging in diabetic mice. Furthermore, metformin treatment rejuvenated SETDB1 activity and alleviated the hyperglycaemia-induced periodontal inflamm-aging. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study show that SETDB1 regulates senescence-like phenotypical switching of macrophages and is a potential candidate for the treatment of diabetes-induced periodontal inflamm-aging.

This study was to investigate whether the programmed death-1 (PD-1)/programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) and T-helper 17 (Th17)/regulatory T (Treg) balance are associated with chronic apical periodontitis (CAP) relived by 0.1% nano-silver. CAP rat models were established by opening the first molars of the right and left mandible and exposing the pulp cavity to the oral cavity. CAP model was verified by cone-beam computed tomography, X-ray digital radiovisiography, and hematoxylin-eosin (H and E) staining. The rats were randomly divided into the sham, Ca(OH)2, and 0.1% nano-silver groups (n = 12 in each group) 2 weeks after surgery. The pathological changes in the apical area were detected by H and E staining. PD-1, PD-L1, RORγT, IL-17, and Foxp3 in periapical tissues were detected by qRT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. Th17/Treg and PD-1/PD-L1 were analyzed by flow cytometry. After 7, 14, and 21 days of 0.1% nano-silver treatment, inflammatory cells in the apical region were slightly reduced and inflammatory infiltration was relieved compared with the sham group. RORγT, IL-17, PD-1, and PD-L1 decreased and Foxp3 increased after 7, 14, and 21 days of 0.1% nano-silver treatment compared with the sham group (p < 0.05); however, there were no significant differences with Ca(OH)2 group (p > 0.05). Flow cytometry revealed that 0.1% nano-silver solution decreased Th17/Treg and PD-1/PD-L1 ratio. 0.1% Nano-silver significantly reduced the inflammation of CAP in rats. PD-1/PD-L1 was included in Th17/Treg balance restored by 0.1% nano-silver.

Coal mines generate a lot of dust during production and transportation, which not only damages the health of personnel, but also causes environmental pollution. Based on the problems of low extraction efficiency of cellulose matrix and low economy of existing dust suppressants for biomass materials, this paper uses bagasse extracted cellulose from sugar production waste as a matrix and adds polyvinyl alcohol and polyacrylamide as monomers to prepare a wetting-crusting type highly efficient environmental protection dust suppressant for coal mine production and transportation process. The dust suppression effect of the product was analyzed by the performance tests of dust suppression efficiency, consolidation layer strength and permeability. The dust suppression rate of the product prepared in this paper remained above 90% at the simulated wind speed of 10 m/s, the consolidation layer strength of 42.3 KPa was much higher than that of the pure water solution, and the average permeation rate within 30 min was greater than that of the surfactant solution. It is proved that the dust suppressant prepared in this paper has good dust suppression effect, high consolidated layer strength and good permeability, and the product prepared in this paper using environmentally friendly biomass raw materials has good degradability, and the mechanism of the dust suppressant is illustrated by MS simulation. The biomass dust suppressant can meet the requirements of dust suppression in the process of coal mining and transportation and is non-toxic and environmentally friendly.

OBJECTIVE: In the previous study, we identified bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) responsible for non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P). We aimed to elucidate the effects and mechanisms of BMP4 on epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) through Smad1 signaling pathway to be involved in NSCL/P. METHODS: The human oral epidermoid carcinoma cells (KBs) were transfected with plasmids or small interfering RNA (siRNA) to build the models. The migration of the cells was evaluated by transwell assay. Western blotting and quantitative real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) were used to detect the expressions of BMP4, E-cadherin, N-cadherin, EMT-related transcription factors snal1 and snal2, matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2), MMP9, Smad1, and phosphorylated Smad1. RESULTS: In the overexpression group, the migration number of cells was increased significantly. The protein expression of E-cadherin was decreased significantly, while the protein expression level of the N-cadherin was increased significantly. The protein and mRNA expressions of MMP2, MMP9, snal1, and snal2 were significantly higher. The expression level of Smad1 was not significantly changed, while the phosphorylation of Smad1 was significantly increased. In the BMP4-siRNA group, the migrating number cells was significantly decreased. The protein expression of E-cadherin was increased significantly, while the expression of N-cadherin was significantly decreased. The protein and mRNA expressions of MMP2, MMP9, snal1, and snal2 were significantly lower than that of the control group. The expressions of Smad1 and phosphorylation of Smad1 were not significantly changed. CONCLUSIONS: BMP4 enhances cell migration and promotes cell EMT through Smad1 signaling pathway. Abnormal BMP4 mediates migration and EMT through other relevant signaling pathways resulting in NSCL/P. The study provides new insight into the mechanisms of NSCL/P associated with BMP4.n.

OBJECTIVE: Periodontitis is a chronic oral disease prevalent worldwide, and natural products are recommended as adjunctive therapy due to their minor side effects. Curcumin, a widely used ancient compound, has been reported to possess therapeutic effects in periodontitis. However, the exact mechanism underlying its activity remains unclear. In this context, the present study aimed to conduct computational simulations to uncover the potential mechanism of action of Curcumin in the treatment of periodontitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Single-cell analysis was conducted using a dataset (i.e., GSE164241) curated from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database through an R package "Seurat package." Bulk RNA sequencing data were curated from GSE10334 and GSE16134 and processed by R package "Limma." Then, the marker genes in the single-cell transcriptome and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the bulk transcriptome were integrated. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) and Gene Ontology (GO) analyses were also carried out to reveal their functionalities. Key targets were mined from their protein-protein interaction (PPI) network topologically. Afterward, molecular docking was performed. The top-ranked pose was subjected to molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the stability of the docking result. RESULTS: FOS, CXCL1, CXCL8, and IL1B, were filtered after a series of selected processes. The results of molecular modeling suggested that except for IL1B, the Vena Scores of the rest exceeded -5 kcal/mol. Furthermore, the molecular dynamic simulation indicated that the binding of the CXCL8-Curcumin complex was stable over the entire 100 ns simulation. CONCLUSION: The present study unlocked the binding modes of CXCL1, FOS, and CXCL8 with the Curcumin molecule, which were relatively stable, especially for CXCL8, hindering its promising potential to serve as the critical targets of Curcumin in periodontitis treatment.

BACKGROUND: Premature loss of primary molars can be treated with a band loop space maintainer (SM). However, fabricating a conventional band loop SM requires multiple clinical and laboratory procedures, which can potentially affect the accuracy of the SM. Moreover, the conventional SM is unable to fully restore masticatory function and maintain the vertical dimension of the edentulous space. In this current study, a fully digital workflow to fabricate a semi-rigid bridge SM made from polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has been described and evaluated for its clinical effectiveness. METHODS: A total of 15 children (eight males and seven females) between the ages of 4-8 years, who experienced the premature loss of a single primary molar, were included in this study. Digital impressions were taken using the CEREC CAD/CAM chair system and imported into CAD software to design the semi-rigid bridge SM, which was fabricated using PEEK block as the maintainer material. The digital SM was tried-in and bonded to the abutment with resin cement. The edentulous space was measured immediately after bonding (T0) and 1 month (T1), 3 months (T2), and 6 months (T3) after treatment. The periodontal condition and mobility of the SM and abutment were also examined. RESULTS: The use of digital impressions resulted in a decreased occurrence of the pharyngeal reflex. The digital semi-rigid bridge SM, fabricated with PEEK, was both convenient and aesthetically pleasing, and successfully restored the anatomy and masticatory function of the missing primary molar. None of the 15 semi-rigid bridge SMs or abutments became loose or fell off during the study, and only one child presented with gingivitis. Furthermore, the difference in the edentulous space at T0, T1, T2, and T3 was not statistically significant (all P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The digital semi-rigid bridge SM fabricated with PEEK was clinically effective in maintaining the missing space and had advantages over the traditional band/crown loop SM.

Objective To compare the image quality of three high-resolution dynamic MRI methods for evaluating the motion of temporomandibular joint disc and condyle. Methods Twenty-five patients with suspected temporomandibular joint disorders were examined by single-shot fast spin-echo (SSFSE),fast imaging employing steady-state acquisition (FIESTA),and spoiled gradient echo (SPGR) on the oblique sagittal position.Two radiologists performed subjective and objective evaluation on the images with double-blind method.The subjective evaluation included the signal intensity of mandibular condyle,articular disc,soft tissue around articular disc,and lateral pterygoid muscle,the contrast between articular disc and condyle,the contrast between articular disc and surrounding soft tissue,condylar motion,and disc movement.The objective evaluation indexes included image signal intensity,signal-to-noise ratio (SNR),and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR).The subjective and objective indexes of the image quality were compared between the three sequences. Results The SSFSE sequence had lower signal intensity of articular disc and higher signal intensity of condyle and surrounding soft tissue than FIESTA and SPGR sequences (all P<0.001).The SPGR sequence showed higher signal intensity of lateral pterygoid muscle than the SSFSE and FIESTA sequences (P=0.017,P<0.001).Among the three sequences,SSFSE sequence showed the clearest articular disc structure (χ2=41.952,P<0.001),the strongest contrast between articular disc and condyle (χ2=35.379,P<0.001),the strongest contrast between articular disc and surrounding soft tissue (χ2=27.324,P<0.001),and the clearest movement of articular disc (χ2=44.655,P<0.001).SSFSE and FIESTA sequences showed higher proportion of disc displacement and reduction than SPGR sequence (all P<0.001).The CNR (χ2=21.400,P<0.001),SNR (χ2=34.880,P<0.001),and condyle signal intensity (F=337.151,P<0.001) demonstrated differences among SSFSE,FIESTA,and SPGR sequences.The CNR of SSFSE sequence was higher than that of FIESTA sequence (P<0.001),while it had no significant difference between SSFSE and SPGR sequences (P=0.472).In addition,the SSFSE sequence had higher SNR and signal intensity than FIESTA and SPGR sequences (all P<0.001). Conclusion The best image quality can be observed from SSFSE sequence where both the structure and movement of temporomandibular joint are well displayed.Therefore,SSFSE is preferred for the examination of temporomandibular joint movement.

Pharmaceutical residues in the environment are of great concern as ubiquitous emerging contaminants. This study investigated the presence of 40 pharmaceuticals in water and sediment of the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) in the wet season of 2020. Among psychiatric drugs, only diazepam was found in water samples while six of them were detected in the sediment. The Σantibiotics levels ranged from 6.18 to 35.9 ng/L and 2.63 to 140 ng/g dry weight in water and sediment samples, respectively. Fluoroquinolones and tetracyclines were found well settling in the outlet sediment, while sulfonamides could be released from disturbed sediment under stronger tidal wash-out conditions. After entering the marine waters, pharmaceuticals tended to deposit at the PRE mouth by the influence of the plume bulge and onshore invasion of deep shelf waters. Low ecological risks to the aquatic organisms and of causing antimicrobial resistance were identified. Likewise, hydrological modeling results revealed insignificant risks: erythromycin-H2O and sulfamethoxazole discharged through the outlets constituted 30.8% and 6.74% of their environmental capacity, respectively. Source apportionment revealed that pharmaceutical discharges through the Humen and Yamen outlets were predominantly of animal origin. Overall, our findings provide strategic insights on environmental regulations to further minimize the environmental stress of pharmaceuticals in the PRE.

The selectivity of chemotherapeutic agents for liver cancer is poor. When they kill tumour cells, they produce serious adverse reactions in the whole body and multidrug resistance (MDR) is also a major hurdle in liver cancer chemotherapy. Combination therapy is a useful method for overcoming MDR and reducing toxic and side effects. In this study, we developed a long-circulating codelivery system, in which doxorubicin (DOX) and schizandrin A (SchA) are combined against MCF-7/ADR cells. The DOX-SchA long-circulating liposome (DOX-SchA-Lip) was prepared using ammonium sulphate gradient method. The two drugs were co-encapsulated into the distearoyl phosphatidylethanolamine-polyethylene glycol (DSPE-mPEG2000) liposome and the liposome had an average particle size of (100 ± 3.5) nm and zeta electrical potential of (-31.3 ± 0.5) mV. The average encapsulation rate of DOX was 97.98% and that of SchA was 86.94%. DOX in liposome had good sustained-release effect. The results showed that DOX-SchA-Lip could significantly prolong the half-life (t1/2z) of the DOX and SchA, increase their circulation time in vivo, improve its bioavailability and reduce their side effects. Liposome can effectively induce early apoptosis of HepG2/ADR cells and the cell cycle was blocked in S-phase by DOX-SchA-Lip in a dose-dependent manner. The IC50 of compound liposome to HepG2 and HepG2/ADR were 0.55 µmol/L and 1.38 µmol/L, respectively, which could significantly reverse the resistance of HepG2/ADR and the reversion multiple was 30.28. It was verified that DOX-SchA-Lip can effectively kill tumour cells and reverse MDR.

Despite the fact that microplastic pollution in terrestrial ecosystems has received increasing attention, there are few studies on the potential effects of different microplastics on terrestrial plants. In this study, the toxicity of polystyrene (PS), polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) microplastics with different concentrations (0, 10, 100, 500 and 1000 mg/L) to tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) were studied by a hydroponic experiment. The results showed that the three microplastics had inhibitory effects on seed germination when the concentration was less than or equal to 500 mg/L, and the inhibition rate ranged from 10.1% to 23.6%. Interestingly, the inhibition effect was alleviated under 1000 mg/L microplastic treatment. Generally, PE was more toxic to seedling growth than PS and PP. Additionally, it was confirmed that microplastics could cause oxidative stress in plants, and PP was relatively less toxic to antioxidant enzymes than PS and PE. These results can provide a theoretical basis and data support for further investigation on the toxicity of microplastics to tomatoes, and contribute to understanding the type specificity of microplastics' toxic effects on plants.

BACKGROUND: Many clinical studies have reported the high success rate of the All-on-4 concept. In the present study, we aimed to compare the stress distribution with different tilted distal implants and cantilever lengths in an All-on-4 system using the two-dimensional photoelastic method and to establish the All-on-4 implant photoelastic model by computer-aided design (CAD) and rapid prototyping (RP).  METHODS: The data of the human edentulous mandible were acquired by computed tomography (CT). Three human edentulous mandible All-on-4 implant models with different distally inclined implant holes were fabricated using Mimic, Geomagic Studio software, and a light solidifying fast shaping machine. Then the final photoelastic models were established through the traditional method. Each of the three models had four NobelSpeedy Replace implants between the interforaminal regions. The two posterior implants were placed 0, 15, and 45 degrees distally before the mental foramen. The four implants were splinted by wrought cobalt-chromium alloy frameworks. Each of the three photoelastic models was submitted to a 150 N vertical load at five points on the framework: the central fossa of the mandibular first molar, and 0 mm, 5 mm, 10 mm, and 15 mm of the cantilever length. The stress produced in the models was photographed with a digital camera, and the highest value of the stressed fringe pattern was recorded. RESULTS: The All-on-4 implant photoelastic model established by CAD and RP was highly controllable and easy to modify. The position and inclination of implants were accurate, and the frameworks could be passively emplaced. The stress values were higher around a single tilted implant compared with the distal implant in All-on-4 with the same inclination. The 0-degree distal implant and 45-degree distal implant demonstrated the highest and lowest stress when loading at the central fossa of the mandibular first molar, respectively. With the same inclination of distal implant, the peri-implant bone stress increased as the length of cantilever increased. CONCLUSION: The method of establishing the All-on-4 implant photoelastic model by CAD and RP was highly controllable, convenient, fast, and accurate. The tilted implants splinted in the fully fixed prosthesis with reduced cantilever lengths did not increase the stress level compared with the vertical distal implants.And this illustrated that the influence of cantilever on stress distribution was greater than the influence of implant inlination.

BACKGROUND: Wear resistance affects dental ceramics longevity and the functions of the opposing teeth. However, data for the effect of aqueous environment on wear resistance of dental ceramics are lacking. This study evaluated the effect of aqueous environment on wear resistance of typical dental glass-ceramics. METHODS: Disk specimens were prepared from lithium disilicate glass-ceramics (LD) and leucite reinforced glass-ceramics (LEU). The disk specimens paired with steatite antagonists were tested in a pin-on-disk tribometer under both wet and dry conditions with 10 N up to 500,000 wear cycles. The wear analysis of glass-ceramics was performed using a 3D profilometer after 100,000, 300,000 and 500,000 wear cycles. Wear morphologies were analyzed by employing scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The crystalline compositions of specimens stored in a dry environment and subsequently immersed in distilled water for 40 h were separately determined using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The chemical states of the wear surfaces for LD were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The data analysis and multiple pair-wise comparisons of means were performed by using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post-hoc test. RESULTS: LEU in a wet environment exhibited less wear volume loss than that in a dry environment (p < 0.05). The volume loss of LD in a wet environment was higher than that in a dry environment (p < 0.05). The wear volumes of steatite antagonists paired with two glass-ceramics under dry conditions were higher than under wet conditions. CONCLUSIONS: XPS spectra of LD under wet conditions indicated that high wear loss might result from the effect of stress corrosion by water and reaction of water with the ionic-covalent bonds at the crack tip. XPS spectra and SEM images of LD under dry conditions showed a possible formation of tribofilm. Within the limitations of this in vitro study, water was wear-friendly to LEU and all opposing steatites but aggravated wear for LD.
