AIM: To compare the implant accuracy, safety and morbidity between robot-assisted and freehand dental implant placement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects requiring single-site dental implant placement were recruited. Patients were randomly allocated to freehand implant placement and robot-assisted implant placement. Differences in positional accuracy of the implant, surgical morbidity and complications were assessed. The significance of intergroup differences was tested with an intention-to-treat analysis and a per-protocol (PP) analysis (excluding one patient due to calibration error). RESULTS: Twenty patients (with a median age of 37, 13 female) were included. One subject assigned to the robotic arm was excluded from the PP analysis because of a large calibration error due to the dislodgement of the index. For robot-assisted and freehand implant placement, with the PP analysis, the median (25th-75th percentile) platform global deviation, apex global deviation and angular deviation were 1.23 (0.9-1.4) mm/1.9 (1.2-2.3) mm (p = .03, the Mann-Whitney U-test), 1.40 (1.1-1.6) mm/2.1 (1.7-3.9) mm (p < .01) and 3.0 (0.9-6.0)°/6.7 (2.2-13.9)° (p = .08), respectively. Both methods showed limited damage to the alveolar ridge and had similar peri- and post-operative morbidity and safety. CONCLUSIONS: Robot-assisted implant placement enabled greater positional accuracy of the implant compared to freehand placement in this pilot trial. The robotic system should be further developed to simplify surgical procedures and improve accuracy and be validated in properly sized trials assessing the full spectrum of relevant outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: To systematically analyze the accuracy of robotic surgery for dental implant placement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane CENTRAL were searched on October 25, 2023. Model studies or clinical studies reporting the accuracy of robotic surgery for dental implant placement among patients with missing or hopeless teeth were included. Risks of bias in clinical studies were assessed. Meta-analyses were undertaken. RESULTS: Data from 8 clinical studies reporting on 109 patients and 242 implants and 13 preclinical studies were included. Positional accuracy was measured by comparing the implant plan in presurgery CBCT and the actual implant position in postsurgery CBCT. For clinical studies, the pooled (95% confidence interval) platform deviation, apex deviation, and angular deviation were 0.68 (0.57, 0.79) mm, 0.67 (0.58, 0.75) mm, and 1.69 (1.25, 2.12)°, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between the accuracy of implants placed in partially or fully edentulous patients. For model studies, the pooled platform deviation, apex deviation, and angular deviation were 0.72 (0.58, 0.86) mm, 0.90 (0.74, 1.06) mm, and 1.46 (1.22, 1.70)°, respectively. No adverse event was reported. CONCLUSION: Within the limitation of the present systematic review, robotic surgery for dental implant placement showed suitable implant positional accuracy and had no reported obvious harm. Both robotic systems and clinical studies on robotic surgery for dental implant placement should be further developed.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is mechanically inhomogeneous due to the presence of a wide spectrum of biomacromolecules and hierarchically assembled structures at the nanoscale. Mechanical inhomogeneity can be even more pronounced under pathological conditions due to injury, fibrogenesis, or tumorigenesis. Although considerable progress has been devoted to engineering synthetic hydrogels to mimic the ECM, the effect of the mechanical inhomogeneity of hydrogels has been widely overlooked. Here, we develop a method based on host-guest chemistry to control the homogeneity of maleimide-thiol cross-linked poly(ethylene glycol) hydrogels. We show that mechanical homogeneity plays an important role in controlling the differentiation or stemness maintenance of human embryonic stem cells. Inhomogeneous hydrogels disrupt actin assembly and lead to reduced YAP activation levels, while homogeneous hydrogels promote mechanotransduction. Thus, the method we developed to minimize the mechanical inhomogeneity of hydrogels may have broad applications in cell culture and tissue engineering.

Ameloblastoma is a locally aggressive tumor derived from the odontogenic epithelium of the developing tooth germ. It is rarely reported in experimental Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. In this 90-day percutaneous repeated-dose toxicity study, mandibular nodules were observed from day 56 to 90. Upon necropsy, a well-demarcated nodule, approximately 1.2×1.0×1.0 cm, was found attached to the mandibular bone, alongside the unerupted left incisor. Histopathologically, the epithelial cells formed islands, nests, or anastomosing strands. The epithelial islands were surrounded by a peripheral layer of tall columnar cells with antibasilar nuclei arranged in a palisading pattern. Several mitotic cells were observed. Some epithelial islands displayed cystic degenerative changes and squamous metaplasia. Necrotic tissue with inflammatory cell infiltration was observed at the tumor margins. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic epithelial islands and mesenchymal components exhibited positivity for pan-cytokeratin and vimentin, respectively. Based on these features, the case was diagnosed as follicular ameloblastoma in an SD rat.

AIM: To evaluate the relative efficacy and confidence in the precision of the results of different surgical interventions for immediate implant placement in the anterior area. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Electronic searches were performed in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane CENTRAL. Randomized controlled trials comparing different surgical techniques in anterior jaws for type 1 implant placement were included. Outcome measures included implant survival (primary outcome), buccal bone thickness (BBT) reduction, and mid-facial soft tissue recession (MSTR). Risks of bias assessment, network meta-analysis (NMA), sensitivity analysis, and quality-of-evidence assessment were performed. RESULTS: Twenty-two studies reporting on 948 subjects and 5 surgical interventions were included. Fourteen early failures were reported. Compared with open-flap surgery without tissue augmentation (F-N) and looking at BBT preservation, NMA showed that there was moderate confidence that flapless surgery with hard tissue augmentation (FL-HTA) was better than flapless surgery without tissue augmentation (FL-N) or open-flap surgery with hard tissue augmentation (F-HTA) (mean difference -0.8 mm, 95% confidence interval: -1.1 to -0.5 mm; -0.6 mm, -0.9 to -0.4 mm; and -0.5 mm, -0.7 to -0.3 mm, respectively). There was moderate confidence that flapless surgery with hard and soft tissue augmentation (FL-HTA&STA) could significantly prevent MSTR compared with FL-HTA (-0.5 mm, -0.7 to -0.3 mm) and FL-N (-0.6 mm, -1.2 to -0.04 mm). However, there was no significant additional benefit in BBT with the FL-HTA&STA approach compared to the FL-HTA approach (-0.30 mm, -0.81 to 0.21 mm). CONCLUSIONS: For immediate implant placement in the anterior areas, the FL-HTA approach better preserves BBT (moderate confidence); adding STA improves the stability of the mid-facial soft tissue level (moderate confidence) but at the expense of BBT (low confidence).

AIM: To evaluate outcome measures and methods of assessment in clinical studies on bone augmentation/preservation procedures for the placement of dental implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic search was performed on three databases from January 2011 to April 2021 to identify clinical studies reporting on any type of bone augmentation/preservation procedure. The outcomes that have been used to assess efficacy or performance in each study were registered and assigned to different domains (group of outcomes). The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses statement. RESULTS: Seven-hundred and eighty-three publications were included. Only 81.8% of the papers had a clear definition of their primary outcome. The rate of complications (59.3%), implant survival (58.2%), 3D radiographic bone gain/change (30%), marginal bone level (MBL; 29%), and histological outcomes (25.5%) were the most frequently reported outcome domains. The most commonly used primary outcome was 3D radiographic bone gain/change (25.8%), followed by implant survival (13.0%). Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were reported in 15.7% of studies. Differences in the reported outcomes were observed among different types of bone preservation/augmentation interventions (i.e., alveolar ridge preservation, immediate implants, horizontal and/or vertical ridge augmentation, and sinus floor augmentation). CONCLUSION: Within the past decade, great heterogeneity was observed among the outcomes considered in studies evaluating bone preservation/augmentation procedures. Three-dimensional radiographic bone gain/change was the most routinely reported main outcome variable, while PROMs were rarely reported.

OBJECTIVES: Simplification and standardization of interventions are critical challenges to improving performance in implant dentistry. This study aimed to systematically identify and schematically present the evidence base of the implant dentistry surgical interventions for the anterior maxilla as a basis for further development and standardization. METHODS: Electronic searches were conducted in PubMed, Embase and Cochrane CENTRAL. Primary clinical studies reporting surgical interventions in the anterior maxilla, with a sample size of at least ten patients, were included. Bibliometric information and study details were extracted. Descriptive analysis and a mind map approach were used to describe the documentation of different surgical interventions. RESULTS: Two hundred and seventy-two studies reporting on 9001 patients were included. Within the past two decades, the number of literatures on implant placement in the anterior maxilla has increased dramatically (7 studies before 2005, 151 studies after 2016). Overall, the evidence map identified six primary operations and 33 variations. For hopeless tooth extraction, immediate implant placement was the most frequently reported (141 studies, 4670 patients); flapless implant placement with hard tissue augmentation and immediate provisionalization was the most commonly reported variation (33 studies, 987 patients). Type 3/4 implant placement (62 studies, 1902 patients) and implant site augmentation (33 studies, 788 patients) were frequently reported for missing teeth. Geographical differences were observed, with type 2 placement studies almost exclusively from Europe. CONCLUSIONS: Research on immediate implant placement was the most reported surgical intervention in the anterior maxilla. Hard tissue augmentation was frequently reported simultaneously with or before implant placement. Immediate provisionalization was mainly used for type 1 implant placement. The finding that six primary operations with 33 variations have been reported indicates the need for additional research to simplify and consolidate the surgical approach.

OBJECTIVES: Multiple generations of medical robots have revolutionized surgery. Their application to dental implants is still in its infancy. Co-operating robots (cobots) have great potential to improve the accuracy of implant placement, overcoming the limitations of static and dynamic navigation. This study reports the accuracy of robot-assisted dental implant placement in a preclinical model and further applies the robotic system in a clinical case series. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In model analyses, the use of a lock-on structure at robot arm-handpiece was tested in resin arch models. In a clinical case series, patients with single missing teeth or edentulous arch were included. Robot-assisted implant placement was performed. Surgery time was recorded. Implant platform deviation, apex deviation, and angular deviation were measured. Factors influencing implant accuracy were analyzed. RESULTS: The in vitro results showed that with a lock-on structure, the mean (SD) of platform deviation, apex deviation, and angular deviation were 0.37 (0.14) mm, 0.44 (0.17) mm, and 0.75 (0.29)°, respectively. Twenty-one patients (28 implants) were included in the clinical case series, 2 with arches and 19 with single missing teeth. The median surgery time for single missing teeth was 23 (IQ range 20-25) min. The surgery time for the two edentulous arches was 47 and 70 min. The mean (SD) of platform deviation, apex deviation, and angular deviation was 0.54 (0.17) mm, 0.54 (0.11) mm, and 0.79 (0.22)° for single missing teeth and for 0.53 (0.17) mm, 0.58 (0.17) mm, and 0.77 (0.26)° for an edentulous arch. Implants placed in the mandible had significantly larger apex deviation than those in the maxilla. CONCLUSION: Cobot-assisted dental implant placement showed excellent positional accuracy and safety in both the in vitro study and the clinical case series. More technological development and clinical research are needed to support the introduction of robotic surgery in oral implantology. Trial registered in ChiCTR2100050885.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular keloids and hypertrophic scars can exert significant effects on the appearance of a patient. However, current treatments are not effective in all cases. Consequently, it is vital to identify a safe and effective treatment method. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the therapeutic effect of the mini-punch technique combined with photodynamic therapy (PDT) on mandibular keloids and hypertrophic scars. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty patients with mandibular keloids and hypertrophic scars were enrolled, including 5 cases of keloids and 15 cases of hypertrophic scars, with a total of 40 lesions. The mini-punch technique was performed first, and then, PDT was conducted, once a week on 3 occasions in total. RESULTS: After 12 months of follow-up, 30 lesions had improved by more than 50%, thus achieving a good therapeutic effect. The Vancouver Scar Scale score of patients ranged between 8 and 12 points with a mean of 9.60 ± 1.09 points before surgery and between 2 and 9 points with a mean of 4.15 ± 2.05 points at 12 months after surgery. The mean Vancouver Scar Scale score after treatment was significantly lower than that before treatment (t = 11.80, p < .001). CONCLUSION: A combination of the mini-punch technique and PDT is an effective treatment for mandibular keloids and hypertrophic scars.

Due to the decreasing self-repairing ability, elder people are easier to form chronic wounds and suffer from slow and difficult wound healing. It is desirable to develop a novel wound dressing that can accelerate chronic wound healing in elderly subjects to decrease the pain of patients and save medical resources. In this work, Heparin and basic fibroblast growth factor(bFGF) were dissolved in the mixing solution of 4-arm acrylated polyethylene glycol and dithiothreitol to form hydrogel dressing in vitro at room temperature without any catalysts, which is convenient and easy to handle in clinic application. In vitro re-lease test shows the bFGF could be continuously released for at least 7 days, whereas the dressing surface integrity maintained for 3 days degradation in PBS solution. Three groups of treatments including bFGF-Gel, bFGF-Sol and control without any treatment were applied on the full-thickness wound on the 22 months old mice back. The wound closure rate and histological and immunohistochemical staining all illustrated that bFGF-Gel displayed a better wound healing effect than the other two groups. Thus, as-prepared hydrogel dressing seems supe-rior to current clinical treatment and more effective in elderly subjects, which shows promising potential to be applied in the clinic.

Background and Objectives: The histopathological and clinical conditions for transforming peri-implant mucositis into peri-implantitis (PI) are not fully clarified. We aim to uncover molecular mechanisms and new potential biomarkers of PI. Materials and Methods: Raw GSE33774 and GSE57631 datasets were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. The linear models for microarray data (LIMMA) package in R software completes differentially expressed genes (DEGs). We conducted a weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) on the top 25% of altered genes and identified the key modules associated with the clinical features of PI. Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analyses were performed using the R software. We constructed a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network through the STRING database. After that we used Cytohubba plug-ins of Cytoscape to screen out the potential hub genes, which were subsequently verified via receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves in another dataset, GSE178351, and revalidation of genes through the DisGeNET database. Results: We discovered 632 DEGs (570 upregulated genes and 62 downregulated genes). A total of eight modules were screened by WGCNA, among which the turquoise module was most correlated with PI. The Cytohubba plug-ins were used for filtering hub genes, which are highly linked with PI development, from the candidate genes in the protein-protein interaction (PPI) network. Conclusions: We found five key genes from PI using WGCNA. Among them, ICAM1, CXCL1, and JUN are worthy of further study of new target genes, providing the theoretical basis for further exploration of the occurrence and development mechanism of PI.

This work presents the experimental investigation of flat sheet composite nanofiltration membrane synthesized with chitosan nanoparticles through interfacial polymerization of piperazine with trimesoyl chloride on polyethersulfone/sulfonated polysulfone substrates. The synthesized membrane was tested in wastewater treatment containing inorganic salts and E.Coli. Single binary electrolyte solution of KCl, MgCl2, MgSO4, and Na2SO4, ternary electrolyte solution, containing a combination of MgCl2 and MgSO4, KCl and MgCl2 and quaternary electrolyte solution of KCl, MgCl2, and MgSO4 as feed were treated in crossflow membrane cell for the water flux and species rejection in the permeate under operating pressure up to 0.5 MPa. The rejection of Na1+, K1+, Mg2+, Cl1-, and SO42- was observed to be 81, 28, 87, 96, and 98%, respectively with an average water flux up to 214 ± 10 L m⁻2.hr⁻1 in the permeate for the binary electrolyte solution. Similarly, the rejection for K1+, Mg2+, Cl1- and SO42- was noted to be 33, 94, 97, and 99%, respectively, for ternary electrolyte solution with an average water flux up to 211 ± 10 L m-2.hr-1. The quaternary ion system in the feed resulted in an average water flux up to 198 ± 12 L m⁻2.hr⁻1 with the rejection of K+, Mg+2, Cl- and SO4-2 as 35, 87, 96, and 99%, respectively. The model feed solution of E. coli after passing through the membrane achieved an E. coli rejection (99%) with water flux up to 220 L m-2.hr-1.

BACKGROUND: PEGylated granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a safe alternative to G-CSF to improve chemotherapy-induced neutropenia (CIN). This superiority has resulted in its increased use by physicians; however, the superiority of PEGylated G-CSF for CIN in breast cancer has not been conclusively determined. OBJECTIVES: To assess the superiority of PEGylated G-CSF for CIN in breast cancer in terms of effectiveness and safety via a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: A literature search in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science was performed for eligible studies published from database inception to December 2019. All studies comparing PEGylated G-CSF and G-CSF for CIN of breast cancer were reviewed. After literature selection, data extraction and quality assessment were performed by two reviewers independently. Meta-analysis was conducted using Revman, version 5.2. RESULTS: Nine randomized controlled trials were finally identified. The publication bias of these studies was acceptable. For the endpoint of effectiveness, analysis of the incidence/duration of grade ≥ 3 neutropenia, the duration of grade 4 neutropenia, the incidence of febrile neutropenia (FN), and the time to absolute neutrophil count recovery showed no advantage of PEGylated G-CSF over G-CSF for CIN of breast cancer (P > 0.05), with the premise of a sufficient dose of G-CSF according to the guidelines. No significant differences in grade 4 adverse events were observed between the groups (P = 0.29), and PEGylated G-CSF did not increase the incidence of skeletal and/or muscle pain compared with G-CSF (P = 0.32). CONCLUSION: PEGylated G-CSF was as effective and safe as G-CSF to reduce CIN in breast cancer but did not show an obvious superiority. However, in clinical practice, PEGylated G-CSF has an obvious advantage in terms of convenience, which could improve patient's quality of life.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the remineralisation effect of bioactive glass on artificial dentine caries. METHODS: Dentine disks with artificial caries were treated with bioactive glass (group BAG), casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) (group CPP-ACP), sodium fluoride glycerol (group F) or deionized water (group W). All disks were subjected to pH cycling for 28 days subsequently. The topography, microhardness and remineralisation depth of the dentine carious lesion were assessed by atomic force microscopy (AFM), microhardness testing and confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM), respectively. RESULTS: AFM images indicated mineral depositions on the surface of the carious lesion in group BAG. The changes of Vickers hardness number (ΔVHN, mean ± SD) after pH cycling were 9.67 ± 3.60, 6.06 ± 3.83, 5.00 ± 2.19 and - 1.90 ± 2.09 (p < 0.001) in group BAG, group CPP-ACP, group F and group W, respectively. The remineralisation depth (mean ± SD) of the carious lesion in group BAG, group CPP-ACP, group F and group W were 165 ± 11 µm, 111 ± 11 µm, 75 ± 6 µm and 0 µm (p < 0.001), respectively. CONCLUSION: Bioactive glass possessed a promising remineralisation effect on artificial dentine caries and could be a therapeutic choice for caries management.

Composite materials ß-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP) and poly-lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) have achieved stable bone regeneration without cell transplantation in previous studies. Recent research shows that aspirin (ASP) has great potential in promoting bone regeneration. The objective of the present study was to incorporate PLGA into ß-TCP combined with a lower single-dose local administration of ASP to enhance its in vivo biodegradation and bone tissue growth. After the creation of a rodent critical-sized femoral metaphyseal bone defect, PLGA -modified ß-TCP (TP) was prepared by mixing sieved granules of ß-TCP and PLGA (50:50, v/v) for medical use, then TP with dripped 50 µg/0.1 ml and 100 µg/0.1 ml aspirin solution was implanted into the defect of OVX rats until death at 8 weeks. The defected area in distal femurs of rats was harvested for evaluation by histology, micro-CT, biomechanics and real time RT-PCR. The results of our study show that a single-dose local administration of ASP combined with the local usage of TP can increase the healing of defects in OVX rats. Single-dose local administration of aspirin can improve the transcription of genes involved in the regulation of bone formation and vascularization in the defect area, and inhibits osteoclast activity. Furthermore, treatments with a higher single-dose local administration of ASP and TP showed a stronger effect on accelerating the local bone formation than while using a lower dose of ASP. The results from our study demonstrate that the combination of a single-dose local administration of ASP and ß-TCP/PLGA had an additive effect on local bone formation in osteoporosis rats, and bone regeneration by PLGA/ß-TCP/ASP occured in a dose-dependent manner.

Parathyroid hormone (1-34, PTH) combined ß-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP) achieves stable bone regeneration without cell transplantation in previous studies. Recently, with the development of tissue engineering slow release technology, PTH used locally to promote bone defect healing become possible. This study by virtue of collagen with a combination of drugs and has a slow release properties, and investigated bone regeneration by ß-TCP/collagen (ß-TCP/COL) with the single local administration of PTH. After the creation of a rodent critical-sized femoral metaphyseal bone defect, ß-TCP/COL was prepared by mixing sieved granules of ß-TCP and atelocollagen for medical use, then ß-TCP/COL with dripped PTH solution (1.0 µg) was implanted into the defect of OVX rats until death at 4 and 8 weeks. The defected area in distal femurs of rats was harvested for evaluation by histology, micro-CT, and biomechanics. The results of our study show that single-dose local administration of PTH combined local usage of ß-TCP/COL can increase the healing of defects in OVX rats. Furthermore, treatments with single-dose local administration of PTH and ß-TCP/COL showed a stronger effect on accelerating the local bone formation than ß-TCP/COL used alone. Streptococcus mutans, the primary cause of dental caries, takes up carbohydrates through the phosphoenolpyruvate sugar phosphotransferase system (PTS). This study aimed to identify a novel membrane-targeted antimicrobial peptide (AMP) that could also target the L-ascorbate-specific PtxA component of the S. mutans PTS system. C10-KKWW was identified and selected using virtual screening of a lipopeptide library, a minimum inhibiting concentration (MIC) assay, cytotoxicity assays and a hemolysis assay. Surface plasmon resonance confirmed that C10-KKWW had a high binding affinity for PtxA. Combining with scanning electron microscopy and cell permeability assay, it was shown that the effects of C10-KKWW could be attributed to both membrane and PtxA. Wild type (WT) S. mutans, a ptxA deletion mutant (ΔptxA), and a mutant-complemented strain (CptxA), were cultured consistently in brain heart infusion (BHI) medium, tryptone-vitamin medium supplemented with 15 mM L-ascorbate (TVL), or for 5 h in BHI supplemented with 7.4 mM sodium L-ascorbate. Compared to ∆ptxA, in WT S. mutans and CptxA, C10-KKWW had a stronger MIC (3.9 µg/mL), and distinctively decreased biofilm viability. The extracellular concentrations of L-ascorbate/sodium L-ascorbate were not changed before and after WT treated with C10-KKWW. L-ascorbate-induced operon genes, or other PTS genes, were significantly suppressed by C10-KKWW. In conclusion, C10-KKWW has been developed; it acts through interaction with the bacterial membrane and interferes with L-ascorbate translocation to inhibit S. mutans growth and eradicate its biofilm. C10-KKWW may be especially effective at optimal oral ascorbate levels. A combination of C10-KKWW with sodium L-ascorbate might also be a novel strategy for dental caries treatment.

We present a rare case of a vascular anomaly of the sphenoid and temporal bones causing an expandable mass of the temporal region with dependent patient positioning and characteristic osseous changes on imaging. Initial diagnosis considerations included multiple myeloma (MM), fibrous dysplasia (FD), Paget's disease, lymphoma, meningoencephalocele (MEC), and vascular malformation (VaM). VaMs of the head and neck are rare and typically arise in the mandible and maxilla. However, this case demonstrates a unique finding of a VaM of the sphenoid and temporal bones with important radiological features to distinguish the diagnosis of vascular anomaly from other etiologies.

A novel bionanomaterial comprising Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) and Fe3O4 nanoparticles encapsulated in a sodium alginate-polyvinyl alcohol (SA-PVA) matrix was synthesized for the efficient removal of atrazine from aqueous solutions. The effects of the operating parameters, nitrogen source, and glucose and Fe3+ contents on atrazine removal were investigated, and the intermediates were detected by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In addition, the synthesized Fe3O4 particles were characterized by XRD, EDX, HR-TEM, FTIR, and hysteresis loops, and the bionanomaterial was characterized by SEM. The results showed that the maximum removal efficiency of 100% was achieved at 28 °C, a pH of 7.0, and 150 rpm with an initial atrazine concentration of 2.0 mg L-1 and that the removal efficiency was still higher than 95.53% even when the initial atrazine concentration was 50 mg L-1. Biodegradation was demonstrated to be the dominant removal mechanism for atrazine because atrazine was consumed as the sole carbon source for S. cerevisiae. The results of GC-MS showed that dechlorination, dealkylation, deamination, isomerization, and mineralization occurred in the process of atrazine degradation, and thus, a new degradation pathway was proposed. These results indicated that this bionanomaterial has great potential for the bioremediation of atrazine-contaminated water.
