RESUMEN

Balling defect of the additively manufactured titanium lattice implants easily leads to muscle tissue rejection, which might cause failure of implantation. Electropolishing is widely used in surface polishing of complex components and has potential to deal with the balling defect. However, a clad layer could be formed on the surface of titanium alloy after electropolishing, which may affect the biocompatibility of the metal implants. To manufacture lattice structured ß-type Ti-Ni-Ta-Zr (TNTZ) for bio-medical applications, it is necessary to investigate the impact of electropolishing on material biocompatibility. In this study, animal experiments were conducted to investigate the in vivo biocompatibility of the as-printed TNTZ alloy with or without electropolishing; and proteomics technology was used to elaborate the results. The following conclusions were drawn: (a) a 30% oxalic acid electropolishing treatment was effective in solving balling defects, and ~21 nm amorphous clad layer would be formed on the surface of the material after polishing; (b) the electropolished TNTZ suggested decreased cell cytotoxicity and improved blood biocompatibility as compared to as-printed TNTZ; (c) the amorphous clad layer could make a barrier to prevent Ta and Zr ions from penetrating into the muscle tissue, and could form a good tissue regeneration at the implantation site during 4 weeks, indicating that the electropolished TNTZ has the potential as implants; and (d) the cells attached to the electropolished TNTZ showed higher antioxidant capacity but less proliferation than attached to as-printed TNTZ.

OBJECTIVE: To preliminarily establish a category of facial symmetry perception after maxillary reconstruction using anterolateral thigh flap (ALTF) by the methods of stereophotogrammetry and subjective assessment. METHODS: The patients underwent maxillectomy due to neoplasms invasion, and all the maxillary defects were reconstructed using ALTF.Three-dimensional (3D) photographs were captured from the patients with a stereophotogrammatrical camera set-up.In the Geomagic software, the mirror image was created by reflecting along an arbitrary plane outside of the face.After the registration, the postoperative side on the original 3D photograph was segmented into 6 areas.The 3D change of the facial soft-tissue was measured using surface-based color map.Twenty laypeople took part in the study as observers, and they were asked to rate the 3D photographs using 5 point Likert-type scale according to their own aesthetic standard.The soft tissue asymmetry was graded according to the score.The collected data were subjected to statistical analysis using the SPSS 24.0 software. RESULTS: In the study, 44 subjects were recruited (21 males and 23 females, age range from 19 to 79 years).The soft-tissue symmetry was graded into three levels according to the subjective scores.The grade Ⅰ was basically symmetrical.The grade Ⅱ was slightly asymmetrical.The grade Ⅲ was obviously asymmetrical.Statistically significant differences were found in the suborbital (P < 0.05) and zygomatic (P < 0.05) areas when comparing all grades of soft-tissue asymmetry, and in the buccal (P < 0.05) and superiolabial (P < 0.05) areas when comparing grades Ⅰ and Ⅲ.The extent of maxillary defect had significant impact on the symmetry of the midface soft-tissue after maxillary reconstruction. CONCLUSION: Varying extent maxillectomy would result in varying degrees of asymmetry, and cause different grades of symmetry perception even if they had been reconstructed using ALTF.The higher the grade, the worse the symmetry of facial soft-tissue.Suborbital and zygomatic areas were important aesthetic units that affected the facial symmetry perception, followed by buccal and superiolabial areas.The clinicians should pay attention to the soft-tissue support in these areas when reconstructing the maxillary defect, especially large defect with orbital floor involved.

OBJECTIVE: To compare early and long-term results of various mesh prosthesis fixation methods in laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. MATERIAL AND METHODS: It is a prospective clinical non-randomized trial. The study included 212 patients. Conventional stapler fixation (112 patients), self-gripping mesh implants (48 patients) and n-butyl cyanoacrylate adhesive fixation (52 patients) were compared. We estimated surgery time, pain syndrome severity in early and long-term postoperative period, postoperative morbidity and recurrence rate were evaluated. RESULTS: Early postoperative morbidity, activation of patients and hospital-stay were similar in all groups. Pain syndrome within 6 postoperative hours in the first group exceeded the same parameter in the second group by 1.23 times (95% CI 1.15-1.31, p<0.05) and by 1.19 times in the third group (95% CI 1.12-1.26, p<0.05). Within 12 hours, pain syndrome in the first group was 1.27 times more severe compared to the third group (95% CI 1.20-1.34, p<0.05). Pain syndrome in long-term period was similar in all groups. In the first group, one recurrence was detected (0.9%). CONCLUSION: There were no significant between-group differences. However, we found the correlation of postoperative pain syndrome with mesh implant fixation technique.

Objective: To analyze the epidemic characteristics of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in Beijing and explore the short-term lag effect of daily average temperature on HFMD. Methods: The incidence data and meteorological data of HFMD were collected from Xicheng District, Chaoyang District, and Changping District of Beijing between January 2009 and December 2018. The dose-response relationship and short-term lag effect of temperature and HFMD incidence were explored by the distributed lag non-linear model (DNLM). Results: From 2009 to 2018, a total of 97 210 cases of HFMD were confirmed in Xicheng District, Chaoyang District, and Changping District of Beijing. The incidence rate of HFMD in Xicheng district was 71.83/100 000, which was the lowest in three districts. The total annual average incidence was 146.89/100 000 in the three districts. The cases were concentrated from May to July, with a small peak in October to November. The ratio of male to female was 1.49∶1, and the median age of the patients was 3.08 (1.89, 4.39) years old, which showed a decreasing trend in children under 6 years old (Z=-30.11, P<0.01). The DNLM showed that the cumulative relative risk (RR) curve had a bimodal distribution, with RR of 1.36 (95%CI: 1.05-1.76) and 1.35 (95%CI: 1.10-1.66), and the peak values appeared at 4 ℃ and 26 ℃, respectively. Conclusions: The incidence rate of HFMD in Xicheng was the lowest in three districts of Beijing. In addition, the incidence of HFMD is seasonal, and the incidence is higher in spring and summer than that in autumn and winter. Daily average temperature had a lag effect on HFMD, which was different between high temperature and low temperature.

This study was designed to determine whether polymorphisms in the gene wingless-type MMTV integration site family, member 10A (WNT10A) are associated with non-syndromic hypodontia (tooth agenesis). A case-control study was performed involving 129 subjects with sporadic non-syndromic hypodontia (cases) and 218 healthy individuals (controls). DNA was obtained from whole blood and the ligase detection reaction method was used to analyze two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the WNT10A gene. A significant difference between cases and controls was observed in the allele and genotype frequencies of both SNPs (rs116998555 and rs147680216). For rs116998555, the presence of the T allele (the thymine variant) was associated with tooth agenesis [odds ratio (OR) = 5.722; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 3.053-10.727; P < 0.001], while for rs147680216, the A allele (the adenine variant) correlated with this condition (OR = 2.665; 95%CI = 1.512-4.695; P < 0.001). We provide here the first case-control study evidence that risk of hypodontia may be related to the WNT10A polymorphism. Our results also confirm the importance of the Wnt pathway in tooth development.

RESUMEN

Regional odontodysplasia (ROD) is a rare localized dental developmental anomaly. The typical clinical manifestations of ROD are abnormal tooth eruption, abnormal development of enamel and dentin. The radiographic characteristic is "ghost teeth". Its etiology still remains unknown. The care and treatment of a patient with ROD needs a multidisciplinary approach. And the treatment should be taken after the assessment of each individual case of ROD. This paper reviews the definition, etiology, epidemiological features, clinical manifestations, imaging features, dental microstructure and treatment strategies of ROD to provide reference for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

ZnO nanostructures of different morphologies were grown by immersing eggshell membranes into Zn(NO3)2 ethanol solution with different pH values and subsequently sintered at 500 degrees C. Effects of the solution pH value, immersing time and Mg incorporation on the nanostructure morphology and photoluminescence were studied. ZnO nanostructure morphology was very sensitive to pH value of the solution, immersing time and layer of the templates. Different morphologies of nanofibers, nanotubes, hexagonal nanosheets and hexagonal nanosheets with tips were grown. All nanostructures had strong green emission at 520 nm and weak ultraviolet emission at 377 nm. The green emission weakened in the interwoven nanofibers while the ultraviolet emission enhanced in the hexagonal nanosheets. Incorporation of Mg ions in the solution with a pH of 7 would result in combination of the interwoven nanofibers and enhance the green emission greatly. UV emission at 355 nm from ZnMgO alloys was observed in Mg incorporated nanofibers.

INTRODUCTION: Technical failure of sutured or stapled anastomoses may lead to anastomotic leakage, which is one of the most important complications after colorectal surgery. Cyanoacrylate glue (CA) provides strong mechanical attachment, making it a good candidate for suture reinforcement. This study aimed to demonstrate that CA is the most important factor in the strength of a sealed colorectal anastomosis, in both normal and insufficient anastomoses. METHODS: Ex vivo porcine colorectal segments were resected. A 1-layer continuous anastomosis or an insufficient 6-interrupted-suture anastomosis was created, and the baseline anastomotic bursting pressure (ABP) was measured. The primary anastomosis was then reinforced either by CA or with 4 additional interrupted sutures, further inverting the anastomosis. After reinforcement a second ABP test was performed. RESULTS: Thirty-two segments were used. Reinforcing the anastomosis by CA significantly increased ABP in both normal and insufficient anastomoses when compared to the primary anastomosis (p < 0.05 for all groups); no significant difference in ABP was found between normal and insufficient anastomosis groups after CA reinforcement. Anastomotic reinforcement with CA was not inferior to the reinforcement with sutures in both normal and insufficient anastomoses, and had significantly fewer ABP variances in normal anastomosis groups (p = 0.042). CONCLUSION: Reinforcing a colorectal anastomosis with CA increases its mechanical strength in both normal and technically insufficient situations, which may contribute to the reduction of anastomotic leakage. CA is promising for anastomotic reinforcement based on mechanical improvement of the anastomosis, and in vivo studies are needed to evaluate its biological effects.

Objective: To analyze the oral phenotype and gene variation of children with hypophosphatasia (HPP), and explore the genotype-phenotype correlations. Methods: Eight children diagnosed with HPP from January 2008 to January 2023 in Children's Hospital,Zhejiang University School of Medicine were recruited in this study. The pathogenic genes of 5 of them were sequentially analyzed and all of their oral manifestations, laboratory tests and genetic variation types were retrospectively analyzed. Results: A total of 8 children were recruited in the study, 3 males and 5 females, aged from 20 months to 104 months, whose main complaints were premature deciduous tooth loss. Among them, 3 children were diagnosed with odonto HPP, and the other 5 children were diagnosed with childhood HPP, including 2 children was odonto HPP at the first diagnosis and modified as childhood HPP at the age of 5. The age range of first deciduous tooth loss is 9 to 18 months, and the age range of diagnosis is 20 to 104 months. The patients of odonto HPP only showed premature loss of deciduous anterior tooth, while the patients with childhood HPP also showed premature loss of multiple deciduous molars. Panoramic radiographic film revealed enlarged pulp chambers and radicular canals in some primary and permanent teeth. The enamel hypoplasia, hypoplastic short roots, and alveolar resorption of deciduous molar were observed in some cases. The serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) (30-107 U/L) levels of all the patients were lower than that in the normal children of same age and gender, and the ALP value of the 1-3 years old girls with childhood HPP (30-33 U/L) was lower than that of the three children with odonto HPP (61-107 U/L), but there was no significant difference in statistical analysis. There were 8 variation sites of ALP liver/bone/kidney (ALPL) gene detected in 5 children and their families, all of which were missense variation, including the new variants in the mutations of c.1334C>G(p.Ser445Cys) and c.1259G>T(p.Gly420Val) that were not reported in the literature. One case was autosomal dominant inheritance and other 4 cases were complex heterozygous variation with autosomal recessive inheritance. Conclusions: Pediatric stomatologists are often the first doctors to detect childhood and odonto HPP. Diagnosis of mild HPP is often delayed. The severity of HPP is related to serum ALP level and ALPL gene mutation sites.

We present on a systematic study of the contribution of surface plasmon (SP) coupling and light extraction toward emission enhancement of Platinum (Pt) nano-patterns capped MgZnO films. Time resolved Photoluminescence (PL) results indicate that the Pt coating can greatly reduces the non-radiative recombination rate by passivation of surface states, making the decay slow down. Temperature dependence of the integrated photoluminescence intensity reveals that the Pt nano-patterns can offer a large amount of light transfer and scattering, which enormously increase the light extraction efficiency up to 3.8-fold. These results indicate that the increased light extraction efficiency caused by surface modification via Pt coating rather than SP coupling plays a dominant role in increasing bandgap emission of MgZnO film.

Methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) has been speculated to induce mineralization, but there has been no convincing evidence of its ability to induce intrafibrillar mineralization. Polymers play a critical role in biomimetic mineralization as stabilizers/inducers of amorphous precursors. Hence, MDP-induced biomimetic mineralization without polymer additives has not been fully verified or elucidated. By combining 3-dimensional stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy, surface zeta potentials, contact angle measurements, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with circular dichroism, we show that amphiphilic MDP can not only demineralize dentin by releasing protons as an acidic functional monomer but also infiltrate collagen fibrils (including dentin collagen), unwind the triple helical structure by breaking hydrogen bonds, and finally immobilize within collagen. MDP-bound collagen functions as a huge collagenous phosphoprotein (HCPP), in contrast to chemical phosphorylation modifications. HCPP can induce biomimetic mineralization itself without polymer additives by alternatively attracting calcium and phosphate through electrostatic attraction. Therefore, we herein propose the dual functions of amphiphilic MDP monomer with de- and remineralizing ability. MDP in the free state can demineralize dentin substrates by releasing protons, whereas MDP in the collagen-bound state as HCPP can induce intrafibrillar mineralization. The dual functions of MDP monomer with de- and remineralization properties might create a new epoch in adhesive dentistry and preventive dentistry.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of polyethylene glycol loxenatide (long-acting GLP-1R agonist) on the lipid, glucose levels, and weight in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with obesity. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 40 obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in our hospital from July 2019 to June 2020 were randomly divided into a control group and a study group. The study group was treated with metformin and polyethylene glycol loxenatide injection, while the control group was treated with metformin. RESULTS: Before treatment, there was no significant difference in FPG (Fasting Blood Glucose) and PPG (Post Prandial Glycaemia) levels between the study group and the control group (p>0.05). After a treatment period, the FPG and PPG levels in the study group were significantly lower than those in the control group (p<0.05). With the longer treatment time, the patient's weight and BMI were lower (p<0.05). The weight and BMI of patients changed the least after one month of treatment, and the weight and BMI changed the most after more than seven months of treatment. After a period of treatment, the levels of FPG and PPG in the blood of male patients in the study group were significantly lower than those of female patients (p<0.05). After treatment, the TG level of the study group was significantly lower than that of the control group (p<0.05). In comparison, the HDL-C level was significantly higher than that of the control group (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Lipid and glucose levels of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with obesity have decreased after 12 weeks of polyethylene glycol loxanatide use. The weight of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with obesity has changed after using polyethylene glycol loxenatide for a period of treatment. Among them, there is a certain relationship between body weight and treatment time, gender, and original body weight, which is worthy of further research and promotion in clinical practice.

Coxsackievirus (CV) strains CVA2, CVA4, CVA5, and CVA10 were isolated from patients with hand, foot, and mouth disease during a 2009 outbreak in China. Full genome sequences for four representative strains, CVA2/SD/CHN/09 (A2SD09), CVA4/SZ/CHN/09 (A4SZ09), CVA5/SD/CHN/09 (A5SD09), and CVA10/SD/CHN/09 (A10SD09), were determined. Phylogenetic and recombination analyses of the isolates by comparison with human enterovirus A prototype strains revealed that genetic recombination occurred during cocirculation of the viruses. The A2SD09 and A4SZ09 strains were most closely related to their corresponding prototype strains in the capsid region but shared noncapsid sequences with each other. Similarly, strains A5SD09 and A10SD09 had serotype-specific homology for the capsid proteins but shared noncapsid sequences with each other. Phylogenetic analyses of the four isolates with homotypic strains showed that CVA2 strains were divided into five genotypes. The A2SD09 strain clustered with Mongolia strains isolated in 2003, forming genotype V. The A4SZ09 strain and other isolates from mainland China and Taiwan clustered with genotype III strains and are likely related to strains that circulated in Europe and Mongolia. The A5SD09 strain is closely related to other Chinese strains isolated in 2008. The A10SD09 isolate, together with other Chinese strains isolated since 2004, formed a distinct lineage that was likely imported from Japan and South Korea. This study shows that natural recombination is a frequent event in human enterovirus A evolution. More comprehensive surveillance of enteroviruses that focus not only on EV71 or CVA16 is needed for us to understand the molecular epidemiology of enteroviruses and to track recombination events which may ultimately affect the virulence of viruses during outbreaks.

With the increasing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with other fields, machine learning, one of the major methods in AI, has been extensively applied in dentistry in the stage of diagnosis, therapy and prognosis evaluation. Nowadays, numerous studies have reported the applications of machine learning in orthodontics in two major aspects, including image identification and clinical decision support system. Herein, we reviewed the application progress of machine learning in orthodontics in order to provide new insight for the future precision medicine.

Objective: To measure and analyze the spherical radius of Monson of normal young people in Guangdong province using cone-beam CT (CBCT), and to establish a personalized measurement method of the spherical radius of Monson to provide a reference for clinical application of Monson spherical radius in occlusal reconstruction. Methods: Sixty healthy young adults from physical examination population at Stomatology Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University [30 males and 30 females, aged (22.1±2.0) years 18-26 years) were recruited, and their CBCT were taken. Three-dimensional reconstruction of CBCT data was carried out, and the reconstructed models were fixed, traced and measured. The difference of Monson spherical radius between male and female was compared by using a single sample t-test. Results: The Monson spherical radius was (100.72±4.89) mm. The Monson spherical radius of male and female were (103.48±4.19) mm and (97.97±3.93) mm respectively. The difference between male and female was statistically significant (P<0.01). Conclusions: CBCT can be used to accurately measure the spherical radius of Monson and can be used as a reference for reconstruction of occlusal plane.

Ankle sprain injury is very common in sports and the use of ankle support is crucial. This research investigated the effect of an ankle brace in reducing the ankle angular displacement and angular velocity during sudden supination. In the experiment, 11 healthy males were tested. The bracing condition, semi-rigid ankle braces were investigated. The angular displacement and angular velocity of the ankle were computed. The motion-capture system was adopted to capture the three-dimensional coordinates of the reflective markers. The coordinates of the reflective markers were used to compute the ankle kinematics during simulated ankle supination. A mechanical supination platform was used to simulate the sprain motions. Experimental results showed that the semi-rigid brace tested significantly reduced the ankle angular displacement and angular velocity compared with control conditions during sudden supination. In conclusion, the semi-rigid-type brace can provide significant restriction to reduce the magnitudes of the angular displacement and angular velocity of the ankle during sudden supination sprain. The semi-rigid-type brace is suggested as the prophylactic bracing for the ankle.

Different educational and professional developments within the dental field create different sets of missions, norms, and practices regarding dental diseases and their appropriate treatment. This review has addressed differences in dental education and professional development between mainland China and North America. Many factors influence the choice of model and it is very difficult to predict which model will become predominant. However, there is growing sentiment that the independent faculty model in North America is logical and superior to the model, which 'integrates' dental and medical education in mainland China. Many North America dental schools place a high priority on preclinical and clinical training in the curriculum in order to expose students to patient oral health needs and systemic dental problems much earlier than in mainland China. North America dental schools promote and embrace students self-learning skills by the use of PBL, CRL, and TRAD education methodologies and new e-based technologies and approaches whereby students learn rather than are taught. In mainland China, the traditional lecture-based format is still employed in the majority of dental schools; however, strategies to enhance students self-learning skills is increasingly utilised in most well-known Chinese dental schools. The Chinese dental education model, which treats dentistry as a sub-specialty of medicine, has brought about fundamental differences, with the dentist functioning essentially as a stomatologist. For example, China has built up a large oral and maxillofacial surgery society, and craniofacial surgery is performed to a much broader extent by Chinese dentists than by most North American counterparts. In North America, dentists engage in full-time work, attend continuing training/education programmes, belong to an association, gain legal status, and construct a code of ethics emphasising the quality of care delivered to the public. Currently, continuing dental education in North America is available through a variety of venues involving licensing authorities, universities and private programmes. The concept of professional development in mainland China is relatively new and is still considered primarily in the context of promotion or achieving a higher professional title. Mandatory continuing dental professional education requirements do not guarantee the competence of members of the profession. Today, the Chinese government and society place increasing emphasis upon the accountability of self-regulating professions. Rather than attempting to summarise the current scope of dental education and professional development between mainland China and North America, this paper hopes to enhance mutual understanding, and promote greater academic exchanges in dental education.

PURPOSE: To investigate and compare the clinical application of flap or flapless buccal surgery on the extractions of mesially/horizontally impacted 3rd molar with high or medium position impact in terms of the average surgery duration, number of root fracture, postoperative pain degree and duration, postoperative swelling degree and duration, degree of limitation of mouth opening. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was conducted of 28 patients who were examined and underwent bilateral extraction of impacted mandibular 3rd molar. One molar was randomly extracted with flap buccal surgery (Control Group, CG) and the other one with flapless buccal surgery (Experimental Group, EG) in the same patient. RESULTS: Gender distribution, average age, average surgery duration and number of root fracture between the two groups were not statistically significant (P>0.05). The postoperative pain degree, swelling degree and degree of limitation of mouth opening were all significantly greater in CG than EG. Objective: To explore the method of functional protection in transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy by vestibular approach. Methods: Retrospective analysis was performed on the case data of 66 patients who underwent transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy by vestibular approach in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery of Beijing Tongren Hospital from February 2018 to February 2020. There were 11 males and 55 females aged 22-64 years, including 19 patients with benign diseases and 47 patients with malignant diseases. Important neurological functions were protected by a combination of anatomical exposure and intraoperative nerve monitoring. The clinical data and the effect of neurofunctional protection were summarized. SPSS 25.0 software was used for statistical analysis. Results: All operations were successfully completed with none transferred to open surgery. Three weeks after surgery, the numbness and tingling symptoms in the lower jaw and lower lip were basically relieved. There was no permanent mental nerve palsy, no permanent recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy but 2 cases with temporary recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy, no external branch injury of superior laryngeal nerve. There were 3 cases of temporary parathyroid gland dysfunction, 1 case of neck infection, 2 cases of subcutaneous effusion, 1 case of neck skin injury, and 2 cases of postoperative eye conjunctivitis. Conclusion: In transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy by vestibular approach, anatomical exposure can decrease mental nerve injury, and anatomical exposure combined with intraoperative nerve monitoring can protect the functions of the external branches of the superior laryngeal nerve and the recurrent laryngeal nerve.

With the emergence and development of new dental materials, chairside computer aided design/computer aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) materials, as an important part of digital technology, is gaining increasing progress to meet the needs of implant restorations and digital processing technology for the mechanical properties, chemical stability, biocompatibility and processing properties. A large number of in-vitro experiments and clinical studies have been reported on various materials, such as polycrystalline ceramic, glass ceramic and indirect composite. The purpose of this article is to review the performance, the clinical indications and applications of the CAD/CAM materials for chairside digital workflow in implant prosthodontics.
