RESUMEN

Photoactive conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) as heterogeneous photocatalysts provide a sustainable alternative to classical metal-based semiconductor photosensitizers. However, previously reported CMPs are typically synthesized through metal catalyzed coupling reactions, which bears product separation, but also increases the price of materials. Herein, a new type of sp2 carbon linked DCM-CMPs are successfully designed and synthesized by organic base catalyzed Knoevenagel reaction using 2,6-Dimethyl-4H-pyran-4-ylidene-malononitrile and aromatic polyaldehydes as monomers. The new polymers feature inherent porosity, excellent stability, and fully π-conjugated skeleton with broad visible-light absorption. They effectively induce the synthesis of benzimidazole compounds under light irradiation, and exhibit wide substrate adaptability with outstanding recyclability.

RESUMEN

The investigation of functional materials derived from sustainable and eco-friendly bioresources has generated significant attention. Herein, nanocomposite films based on chiral nematic cellulose crystals (CNCs) were developed by incorporating xylose and biocompatible ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) via evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA). The nanocomposite films exhibited iridescent color changes that corresponded to the birefringence phenomenon under polarized light, which was attributed to the formation of cholesteric structures. ZnO nanoparticles were proved to successfully adjust the helical pitches of the chiral arrangements of the CNCs, resulting in tunable optical light with shifted wavelength bands. Furthermore, the nanocomposite films showed fast humidity and ethanol stimuli response properties, exhibiting the potential of stimuli sensors of the CNC-based sustainable materials.

Microplastics (MPs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are important pollutants in waste activated sludge (WAS), but their interactions during anaerobic digestion (AD) still need to be further explored. This study investigated variations in ARGs, mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and host bacteria during AD under the pressure of polyamide (PA), polyethylene (PE), and polypropylene (PP). The results showed that the MPs increased methane production by 11.7-35.5%, and decreased ARG abundance by 5.6-24.6%. Correlation analysis showed that the decrease of MGEs (plasmid, prophage, etc.) promoted the decrease of the abundance of multidrug, aminoglycoside and tetracycline resistance genes. Metagenomic annotation revealed that the reduction of key host bacteria (Arenimonas, Lautropia, etc.) reduced the abundance of major ARGs (rsmA, rpoB2, etc.). Moreover, PP MPs contributed to a reduction in the abundance of functional genes related to the production of reactive oxygen species, ATP synthesis, and cell membrane permeability, which was conducive to reducing the potential for horizontal gene transfer of ARGs. These findings provide insights into the treatment of organic waste containing MPs.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of diode laser as an adjunct to nonsurgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) for residual periodontal pockets in mandibular second molars. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-seven mandibular second molars (154 residual periodontal pockets) were recruited into the study and randomly assigned to the Laser + NSPT group and the NSPT group. The Laser + NSPT group underwent NSPT adjunct with diode laser radiation (wavelength: 810 nm, power: 1.5 W, 40 s maximum), while the NSPT group underwent nonsurgical periodontal therapy alone. Clinical parameters were measured at baseline (T0) and 4(T1), 12(T2), and 24(T3), weeks after treatment. RESULTS: Periodontal pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), and bleeding on probing (BOP) in both groups showed significant improvements at the end of study compared to baseline. The reductions of PPD, CAL, and BOP in the Laser + NSPT group were significantly greater than NSPT group. At T3, the Laser + NSPT group had a mean PPD of 3.06 ± 0.86 mm, CAL of 2.58 ± 0.94 mm and BOP of 15.49%, while the NSPT group had a mean PPD of 4.46 ± 1.57 mm, CAL of 3.03 ± 1.25 mm and BOP of 64.29%. CONCLUSIONS: The diode laser as an adjunct to nonsurgical periodontal therapy may contribute to clinical outcomes for residual periodontal pockets. However, the approach may cause reduction of keratinized tissue width. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: This study was registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry ChiCTR2200061194. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Diode laser as an adjunct to nonsurgical periodontal therapy may contribute to the clinical outcomes for residual periodontal pockets in mandibular second molars.

Biomimicry of the mucin barrier function is an efficient strategy to counteract influenza. We report the simple aminolyzation of poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic anhydride) (PM) using amine-terminated poly(ethylene glycol)ylated oleanolic acid (OAPEG) to mimic the mucin structure and its adsorption of the influenza virus. Direct interactions between influenza hemagglutinin (HA) and the prepared macromolecule evaluated by surface plasmon resonance and isothermal titration calorimetry demonstrated that the multivalent presentation of OAPEG on PM enhanced the binding affinity to HA with a decrease in KD of approximately three orders of magnitude compared with monomeric OAPEG. Moreover, hemagglutination inhibition assay, viral growth inhibition assay, and cytopathic effect reduction assay indicated that the nonglycosylated polymer could mimic natural heavily glycosylated mucin and thus promote the attachment of the virus in a subnanomolar range. Further investigation of the antiviral effects via time-of-addition assay, dynamic light scattering experiments, and transmission electron microscopy photographs indicated that the pseudomucin could adsorb the virion particles and synergistically inhibit the early attachment and final release steps of the influenza infection cycle. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the macromolecule in the physical sequestration and prevention of viral infection. Notably, due to its structural similarities with mucin, the biomacropolymer also has the potential for the rational design of antiviral drugs, influenza adsorbents, or filtration materials and the construction of model systems to explore protection against other pathogenic viruses.

UV-guided fractionation led to the isolation of thirteen new polyacetylenes (1-13) from the roots of Bupleurum scorzonerifolium Willd. All polyacetylenes were analyzed as racemates since the lack of optical activity and Cotton effects in the ECD spectra. The sequent chiral-phase HPLC resolution successfully gave twelve pairs of enantiomers 1a/1b and 3a/3b-13a/13b. Their structures were elucidated based on the HRESIMS and NMR data analyses. The absolute configurations were determined by the combination of Snatzke's method, electronic circular dichroism calculations, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Using Griess methods and MTT assays, polyacetylenes 1a, 3a, 4a/4b-12a/12b, and 13a displayed inhibitory activities against LPS-induced NO release in BV-2 microglial cells.

Printed electronics are expected to facilitate the widespread distributed wearable electronics in the era of the Internet of things. However, developing cheap and stable electrode inks remains a significant challenge in the printed electronics industry and academic community. Here, overcoming the weak hydrophilicity of polyaniline, a low-cost, easy-fabricating, and air-stable conducting polymer (CP) ink is devised through a facile assemble-disperse strategy delivering a high conductivity in the order of 10-2 S cm-1 along with a remarkable specific capacitance of 386.9 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 (dehydrated state). The additive-free CP ink is directly employed to print wearable micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) via the spray-coating method, which deliver a high areal capacitance (96.6 mF cm-2 ) and volumetric capacitance (26.0 F cm-3 ), outperforming most state-of-the-art CP-based supercapacitors. This work paves a new approach for achieving scalable MSCs, thus rendering a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and pervasive energy solution for next-generation distributed electronics.

Several studies have confirmed that microRNAs (miRNAs) are promising markers for body fluid identification since they were introduced to this field. However, there is no consensus on the choice of reference genes and identification strategies. In this study, 13 potential candidate miRNAs were screened from three forensically relevant body fluid datasets, and the expression of 12 markers in five body fluids was determined using a real-time quantitative method. Two probabilistic approaches, Naive Bayes (NB) and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), were then applied to predict the origin of the samples to determine whether probabilistic methods are helpful in body fluid identification using miRNA quantitative data. Furthermore, 14 reference combinations were used to validate the influence of different reference choices on the predicted results simultaneously. Our results showed that in the NB model, leave-one-out cross-validation (LOOCV) achieved 100% accuracy and the prediction accuracy of the test set was 100% in most reference combinations. In the PLS-DA model, the first two components could interpret about 80% expression variance and LOOCV achieved 100% accuracy when miR-92a-3p was used as the reference. This study preliminarily proved that probabilistic approaches hold huge potential in miRNA-based body fluid identification, and the choice of references influences the prediction results to a certain extent.

Interlayered thin-film nanocomposite membranes (TFNi) are an emerging type of membranes with great potential to overcome the permeability-selectivity upper bound of conventional thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membranes. However, the exact roles of the interlayer and the corresponding mechanisms leading to enhanced separation performance of TFNi membranes remain poorly understood. This study reports a polydopamine (PDA)-intercalated TFNi nanofiltration membrane (PA-PSF2, PDA coating time of 2 h) that possessed nearly an order of magnitude higher water permeance (14.8 ± 0.4 Lm-2 h-1 bar-1) than the control TFC membrane (PA-PFS0, 2.4 ± 0.5 Lm-2 h-1 bar-1). The TFNi membrane further showed enhanced rejection toward a wide range of inorganic salts and small organic molecules (including antibiotics and endocrine disruptors). Detailed mechanistic investigation reveals that the membrane separation performance was enhanced due to both the direct "gutter" effect of the PDA interlayer and its indirect effects resulting from enhanced polyamide formation on the PDA-coated substrate, with the "gutter" effect playing a more dominant role. This study provides a mechanistic and comprehensive framework for the future development of TFNi membranes.

Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) derived from the human dental pulp tissue have multiple differentiation capabilities, such as osteo/odontogenic differentiation. Therefore, DPSCs are deemed as ideal stem cell sources for tissue regeneration. As new nanomaterials based on DNA, tetrahedral DNA nanostructures (TDNs) have tremendous potential for biomedical applications. Here, the authors aimed to explore the part played by TDNs in proliferation and osteo/odontogenic differentiation of DPSCs, and attempted to investigate if these cellular responses could be driven by activating the canonical Notch signaling pathway. Upon exposure to TDNs, proliferation and osteo/odontogenic differentiation of DPSCs were dramatically enhanced, accompanied by up regulation of Notch signaling. In general, our study suggested that TDNs can significantly promote proliferation and osteo/odontogenic differentiation of DPSCs, and this remarkable discovery can be applied in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine to develop a significant and novel method for bone and dental tissue regeneration.

Polyvinyl caprolactam-polyvinyl acetate-polyethylene glycol graft copolymer, or Soluplus®, is a relatively new copolymer and a promising carrier of amorphous solid dispersions. Knowledge on the inherent properties of Soluplus® (e.g. cloud points, critical micelle concentrations, and viscosity) in different conditions is relatively inadequate, and the application characteristics of Soluplus®-based solid dispersions made by microwave methods still need to be clarified. In the present investigation, the inherent properties of a Soluplus® carrier, including cloud points, critical micelle concentrations, and viscosity, were explored in different media and in altered conditions. Ibuprofen, a BCS class II non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, was selected to develop Soluplus®-based amorphous solid dispersions using the microwave-quench cooling (MQC) method. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Raman spectroscopy (RS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were adopted to analyze amorphous properties and molecular interactions in ibuprofen/Soluplus® amorphous solid dispersions generated by MQC. Dissolution, dissolution extension, phase solubility, equilibrium solubility, and supersaturated crystallization inhibiting experiments were performed to elucidate the effects of Soluplus® on ibuprofen in solid dispersions. This research provides valuable information on the inherent properties of Soluplus® and presents a basic understanding of Soluplus® as a carrier of amorphous solid dispersions.

The collective impact of cellulosic polymers on the dissolution, solubility, and crystallization inhibition of amorphous active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) is still far from being adequately understood. The goal of this research was to explore the influence of cellulosic polymers and incubation conditions on enhancement of solubility and dissolution of amorphous felodipine, while inhibiting crystallization of the drug from a supersaturated state. Variables, including cellulosic polymer type, amount, ionic strength, and viscosity, were evaluated for effects on API dissolution/solubility and crystallization processes. Water-soluble cellulosic polymers, including HPMC E15, HPMC E5, HPMC K100-LV, L-HPC, and MC, were studied. All cellulosic polymers could extend API dissolution and solubility to various extents by delaying crystallization and prolonging supersaturation duration, with their effectiveness ranked from greatest to least as HPMC E15 > HPMC E5 > HPMC K100-LV > L-HPC > MC. Decreased polymer amount, lower ionic strength, or higher polymer viscosity tended to decrease dissolution/solubility and promote crystal growth to accelerate crystallization. HPMC E15 achieved greatest extended API dissolution and maintenance of supersaturation from a supersaturated state; this polymer thus had the greatest potential for maintaining sustainable API absorption within biologically relevant time frames.

A solvent diffusion method was used to prepare pegylated asiatic acid (AA) loaded nanostructured lipid carriers (p-AA-NLC), and the ligated intestinal circulation model was established to observe the absorption and distribution in small intestine. The concentration of AA in bile after oral administration of p-AA-NLC was detected by HPLC in healthy SD rats to indirectly evaluate the oral absorption promoting effect of PEG-modified namoparticles. The results showed that the penetration of p-AA-NLC was enhanced significantly and the transport capacity was increased greatly in small intestinal after PEG modification. As compared with the normal nanoparticles (AA-NLC), the Cmax of the drug excretion was increased by 76%, the time to reach the peak (tmax ) was decreased and the elimination half-life t1/2 was doubled in the rats after oral administration of p-AA-NLC, and the AUC0→t was 1.5 times of the AA-NLC group, indicating that the oral bioavailability of AA-NLC was significantly improved by hydrophilic modification of PEG.

PURPOSE: Patients might refuse the offer of local anaesthesia (LA) administration prior to dental treatment. This study investigates subjective discomfort perception during non-surgical mechanical periodontal therapy delivered with or without LA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty patients with mild to moderate chronic periodontitis and prior periodontal debridement experience were randomly enrolled in nonsurgical therapy of a quadrant with or without LA administration. Patients were free to comply or not with the allocated LA arrangement. Visual analogue scales (VAS) of discomfort perception at various stages of the treatment as well as overall satisfaction were recorded. Demographic, psychosocial and periodontal parameters were recorded. RESULTS: Thirty-one patients undergoing nonsurgical periodontal therapy not receiving (LA-) and 29 participants receiving LA (LA+) were studied. Compared to LA- patients, LA+ individuals perceived less discomfort during treatment and reported less dental anxiety (p<0.05). Lower overall treatment satisfaction was associated with prior unpleasant periodontal experience (p=0.047). Overall, debridement discomfort was associated with not receiving LA, noncompliance with the pain control regimen allocated, longer treatment duration, greater gingival inflammation and a higher percentage sites with probing pocket depths≥5 mm (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Clinicians should be aware that patients who refuse LA can experience higher dental anxiety and therefore may require various pain control strategies for comfort during nonsurgical periodontal therapy, which, if not employed, can lead to less periodontal treatment satisfaction.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the correlation between constitution of yin deficiency syndrome (YDS) and polymorphism of HLA-DQA1/treatment response of Peg-lFNalpha therapy in HBeAg positive chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients, and to explore constitution of Chinese medicine (CM) in response of interferon therapy. METHODS: Totally 120 HBeAg positive CHB patients who were treated with Peg-IFNalpha were enrolled, and assigned to YDS group (59 cases) and non-YDS group (61 cases) according to classification of CM constitutions. All patients were subcutaneously injected with Peg-IFNalpha-2b (1.0 microg/kg body weight) or Peg-IFNalpha-2a (180 microg), once per week. Effective efficacy was primarily judged when complete response (CR) or partial response (PR) was obtained at month 6. Those with CR or PR completed 1 year therapeutic course. HLA-DQA1 gene types were detected by polymerase chain reaction sequence specific primers (PCR-SSP). The distribution difference of CM constitutions in patients with CR or PR and their inter-group HLA-DQA1 allele frequency were compared. RESULTS: Different treatment responses of Peg-IFNalpha were observed in CHB patients of two different CM constitutions. The ratio of CR + PR was 61.0% (36/59) in YDS group, obviously lower than that in NYDS group [78.7% (48/61), P < 0. 05]. Patients with CR had a lower allele frequency of HLA-DQA1 * 0501 than those with no-response [14.8% (8/54) vs. 30.6% (22/72)] with statistical difference (P < 0.05). Patients with CR had a higher allele frequency of HLA-DQA1 * 0601 than those with no-response [18.5% (10/54) vs. 5.6% (4/72)] with statistical difference (P < 0.05). The allele frequency of HLA-DQA1 * 0301 was lower in YDS group than in non-YDS group [2. 5% (3/118) vs. 9.8% (12/122)] with statistical difference (P < 0.05). The allele frequency of HLA-DQA1 * 0501 was higher in YDS group than in non-YDS group [33.9% (40/118) vs. 18.9% (23/122)] with statistical difference (P < 0.05). Yet statistical significance was lost after adjustment (Pc > 0.05 for both). CONCLUSIONS: Both constitutions of CM and HLA-DQA1 gene polymorphism af- fect HBeAg positive CHB patients' response to Peg-INFalpha. Constitutions of YDS and HLA-DQA1 * 0501 was not favorable to response, their association needed to be further studied.

As an important water source in Shandong Province, Lake Dongping is one of the most important inland lakes to South-to-North Water Diversion East Route Project. We tried to provide the basis for real-time monitoring of water quality mutation by using CDOM absorption characteristics. The average values of CDOM absorption coefficients [a(280),a(350),a(440)] were (12.90±1.17),(3.11±0.40) and (0.65±0.09) m-1. a(440) had linear relationships with total nitrogen (p<0.01), total phosphorus (p<0.001), dissolved organic carbon (p<0.001), chemical oxygen demand (p<0.001), Chlorophyll a (p<0.001), which can be used to estimate the water quality parameters. The results showed that CDOM absorption coefficient reflects the nutritional status of Lake Dongping, which is close to eutrophication level. There was an obvious decrease of CDOM absorption coefficients from river mouth of Dawen River to lake center and then to the outlets of lake. This illustrated that terrestrial input is the main source of nutrients and pollutants in Lake Dongping.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) pose a potential threat to the environment because of the accumulation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and microplastics (MPs). However, the interactions between ARGs and MPs, which have both indirect and direct effects on ARG dissemination in WWTPs, remain unclear. In this study, spatiotemporal variations in different types of MPs, ten ARGs (sul1, sul2, tetA, tetO, tetM, tetX, tetW, qnrS, ermB, and ermC), class 1 integron integrase (intI1) and transposon Tn916/1545 in three typical WWTPs were characterized. Sul1, tetO, and sul2 were the predominant ARGs in the targeted WWTPs, whereas the intI1 and transposon Tn916/1545 were positively correlated with most of the targeted ARGs. Saccharimonadales (4.15 %), Trichococcus (2.60 %), Nitrospira (1.96 %), Candidatus amarolinea (1.79 %), and SC-I-84 (belonging to phylum Proteobacteria) (1.78 %) were the dominant genera. Network and redundancy analyses showed that Trichococcus, Faecalibacterium, Arcobacter, and Prevotella copri were potential hosts of ARGs, whereas Candidatus campbellbacteria and Candidatus kaiserbacteria were negatively correlated with ARGs. The potential hosts of ARGs had a strong positive correlation with polyethylene terephthalate, silicone resin, and fluor rubber and a negative correlation with polyurethane. Candidatus campbellbacteria and Candidatus kaiserbacteria were positively correlated with polyurethane, whereas potential hosts of ARGs were positively correlated with polypropylene and fluor rubber. Structural equation modeling highlighted that intI1, transposon Tn916/1545 and microbial communities, particularly microbial diversity, dominated the dissemination of ARGs, whereas MPs had a significant positive correlation with microbial abundance. Our study deepens the understanding of the relationships between ARGs and MPs in WWTPs, which will be helpful in designing strategies for inhibiting ARG hosts in WWTPs.

INTRODUCTION: Often there is the need of moving endodontically treated teeth. Orthodontic movement may have no effect on the prognosis of teeth with root canal treatment (RCT). To verify this subject, we evaluated the effect of orthodontic movement on the prognosis of RCT teeth using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and further explored the influence of orthodontic movement on the prognosis of RCT teeth with and without apical periodontitis (AP). METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted by evaluating 169 RCT teeth of 100 patients who had undergone fixed orthodontic treatment. AP was assessed and classified using the CBCT periapical index. Univariate analysis of RCT outcome was performed for the total RCT group, RCT without AP group and RCT with AP group. Multivariate logistic regression was performed for the total RCT group and RCT without AP group, respectively, but not for the RCT with AP group. Variables related to the prognosis of RCT were included, such as age, gender, tooth position, RCT quality, coronal restoration quality, periodontal condition, orthodontic traction distance, and orthodontic rotation angle. RESULTS: The orthodontic traction distance and rotation angle were not significantly correlated to the RCT outcomes, regardless of the presence of AP. Among the total RCT group, teeth with unqualified RCT (odds ratio = 3.42, P = .004) and inadequate coronal restoration (odds ratio = 4.40, P = .031) had a lower success rate. Of the 97 RCT teeth without AP, unqualified RCT was a risk factor for treatment failure (odds ratio = 3.55, P = .041). Of the 72 RCT teeth with AP, the univariate analysis showed that RCT quality were significantly related to the outcome (P = .042). CONCLUSIONS: Orthodontic movement had no effect on the prognosis of RCT teeth regardless of the presence of AP.

Primary Sjögren's Syndrome (pSS) is a complex autoimmune disorder characterized by exocrine gland dysfunction, leading to dry eyes and mouth. Despite growing interest in biologic therapies for pSS, FDA approval has proven challenging due to trial complications. This review addresses the absence of a molecular-target-based approach to biologic therapy development and highlights novel research on drug targets and clinical trials. A literature search identified potential pSS treatment targets and recent advances in molecular understanding. Overlooking extraglandular symptoms like fatigue and depression is a notable gap in trials. Emerging biologic agents targeting cytokines, signal pathways, and immune responses have proven efficacy. These novel therapies could complement existing methods for symptom alleviation. Improved grading systems accounting for extraglandular symptoms are needed. The future of pSS treatment may involve gene, stem-cell, and tissue-engineering therapies. This narrative review offers insights into advancing pSS management through innovative biologic interventions.

Novel supramolecular phosphorescent polymers (SPPs) are synthesized as a new class of solution-processable electroluminescent emitters. The formation of these SPPs takes advantage of the efficient non-bonding assembly between bis(dibenzo-24-crown-8)-functionalized iridium complex monomer and bis(dibenzylammonium)-tethered co-monomer, which is monitored by (1) H NMR spectroscopy and viscosity measurements. These SPPs show good film morphology and an intrinsic glass transition with a Tg of 94-116 °C. Noticeably, they are highly photoluminescent in solid state with quantum efficiency up to ca. 78%. The photophysical and electroluminescent properties are strongly dependent on the molecular structures of the iridium complex monomers.
