BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) belongs to the genus Fusobacterium, which is a gram-negative obligate anaerobic bacterium. Bacteremia associated with F. nucleatum is a serious complication, which is not common in clinic, especially when it is combined with other intracranial pathogenic microorganism infection. We reported for the first time a case of F. nucleatum bacteremia combined with intracranial Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) and herpes simplex virus type 1(HSV-1) infection. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with a headache for a week that worsened for 2 days. Combined with history, physical signs and examination, it was characterized as ischemic cerebrovascular disease (ICVD). F. nucleatum was detected in blood by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-offight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS). Meanwhile, P. gingivalis and HSV-1 in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were identified by metagenome next generation sequencing (mNGS). After a quick diagnosis and a combination of antibiotics and antiviral treatment, the patient recovered and was discharged. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first report of intracranial P. gingivalis and HSV-1 infection combined with F. nucleatum bacteremia.

Cisplatin (DDP) resistance, often leading to first-line chemotherapy failure in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), poses a significant challenge. MiR-219a-5p has been reported to enhance the sensitivity of human NSCLC to DDP. However, free miR-219a-5p is prone to degradation by nucleases in the bloodstream, rendering it unstable. In light of this, our study developed an efficient nanodrug delivery system that achieved targeted delivery of DDP and miR-219a-5p by modifying liposomes with folate (FA). Based on the results of material characterization, we successfully constructed a well-dispersed and uniformly sized (approximately 135.8 nm) Lipo@DDP@miR-219a-5p@FA nanodrug. Agarose gel electrophoresis experiments demonstrated that Lipo@DDP@miR-219a-5p@FA exhibited good stability in serum, effectively protecting miR-219a-5p from degradation. Immunofluorescence and flow cytometry experiments revealed that, due to FA modification, Lipo@DDP@miR-219a-5p@FA could specifically bind to FA receptors on the surface of tumor cells (A549), thus enhancing drug internalization efficiency. Safety evaluations conducted in vitro demonstrated that Lipo@DDP@miR-219a-5p@FA exhibited no significant toxicity to non-cancer cells (BEAS-2B) and displayed excellent blood compatibility. Cellular functional experiments, apoptosis assays, and western blot demonstrated that Lipo@DDP@miR-219a-5p@FA effectively reversed DDP resistance in A549 cells, inhibited cell proliferation and migration, and further promoted apoptosis. In summary, the Lipo@DDP@miR-219a-5p@FA nanodrug, through specific targeting of cancer cells and reducing their resistance to DDP, significantly enhanced the anti-NSCLC effects of DDP in vitro, providing a promising therapeutic option for the clinical treatment of NSCLC.

Regulating the mutual stacking arrangements is of great interest for understanding the origin of chirality at different hierarchical levels in nature. Different from molecular level chirality, the control and manipulation of hierarchical chirality in polymer systems is limited to the use of external factors as the energetically demanding switching stimulus. Herein, the first self-assembly strategy of polymerization-induced helicity inversion (PIHI), in which the controlled packing and dynamic stereomutation of azobenzene (Azo) building blocks are realized by in situ polymerization without any external stimulus, is reported. A multiple helicity inversion and intriguing helix-helix transition of polymeric supramolecular nanofibers occurs during polymerization, which is collectively confirmed to be mediated by the transition between functionality-oriented π-π stacking, H-, and J-aggregation. The studies further reveal that helicity inversion proceeds through a delicate interplay of the thermodynamically and kinetically controlled, pathway-dependent interconversion process, which should provide new insight into the origin and handedness control of helical nanostructures with desired chirality.

Heavy metal ion pollution has become a serious environmental problem. Herein, this study reports the synthesis of poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) membranes via in situ photo-crosslinking of vinyl imidazole with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic ionic liquid monomers. The resultant amphiphilic polymer membranes are porous and exhibit high absorption capacity of metal ions (including Hg2+ , Pb2+ , Cu2+ , Cd2+ , and Zn2+ ) in both high (1000 mg L-1 ) and low (10 mg L-1 ) concentration metal ion solutions. These metal ionic absorption membranes are easily regenerated in acid solution and can be reused without significant decreases of absorption capacity after many cycles. These PIL membranes may have potential applications as eco-friendly and safe heavy metal ion removal materials.

Developing biodegradable cationic polymers with high antibacterial efficiency and low cytotoxicity is of great significance in biological applications. Selenium is an essential trace element for the human body, and selenium-containing compounds are promising in various health-related applications. To combine selenium with biodegradability, selenide-functionalized polycaprolactones (PCL) with different hydrophobic substituents were synthesized followed by selenoniumization. The optimal polyselenonium salt showed excellent antibacterial activity with an MBC of 2 µg mL-1 and an MIC of 1 µg mL-1 and exhibited good biocompatibility before and after degradation. In addition, the obtained selenium polymer can be well blended with commercial PCL by electrospinning, and films with good antibacterial activity were prepared. This work enriches the knowledge of selenium derivatives and lays a foundation for follow-up research on selenium cationic polymers in the antimicrobial field.

This report is a further characterization of data from an ecological cancer mortality study of a population (about 10,000) exposed to groundwater contaminated by hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] up to 20 mg/L near JinZhou City in the LiaoNing Province of China between 1960 and 1978. Prior reports showed an elevation in all-cancer mortality from 1970 to 1978 averaged across five agricultural villages with Cr(VI) in groundwater relative to average cancer rates for the district and province. The current study compares the cancer rates during the same time period for the same five exposed villages to those of four nearby areas with no Cr(VI) in groundwater. The use of a local comparison group is considered superior to the use of district or province averages because of the expected improved similarity among unmeasured covariates in nearby areas. The average lung-, stomach-, and all-cancer mortality rates for the three agricultural villages without Cr(VI) in groundwater were not statistically different from those of the five agricultural villages with Cr(VI) in groundwater. Also, three surrogate measures of village drinking-water Cr(VI) dose did not significantly correlate with cancer mortality rates in the five exposed villages. Further, the industrial town in which the Cr(VI) source was located had different demographics and a different pattern of stomach and lung cancers compared to the adjacent agricultural villages, regardless of Cr(VI) groundwater exposure. The results of other local investigations on cancer mortality and genotoxicity in the exposed populations are reviewed. The overall findings in the studied population do not indicate a dose-response relationship or a coherent pattern of association of lung-, stomach-, or all-cancer mortality with exposure to Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater.
