RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis results from host-microbe dysbiosis and the resultant dysregulated immunoinflammatory response. Importantly, it closely links to numerous systemic comorbidities, and perplexingly contributes to adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs). Currently, there are limited studies on the distal consequences of periodontitis via oral-gut axis in pregnant women. This study investigated the integrative microbiome-metabolome profiles through multi-omics approaches in first-trimester pregnant women and explored the translational potentials. METHODS: We collected samples of subgingival plaques, saliva, sera and stool from 54 Chinese pregnant women at the first trimester, including 31 maternal periodontitis (Perio) subjects and 23 Non-Perio controls. By integrating 16S rRNA sequencing, untargeted metabolomics and clinical traits, we explored the oral-gut microbial and metabolic connection resulting from periodontitis among early pregnant women. RESULTS: We demonstrated a novel bacterial distinguisher Coprococcus from feces of periodontitis subjects in association with subgingival periodontopathogens, being different from other fecal genera in Lachnospiraceae family. The ratio of fecal Coprococcus to Lachnoclostridium could discriminate between Perio and Non-Perio groups as the ratio of subgingival Porphyromonas to Rothia did. Furthermore, there were differentially abundant fecal metabolic features pivotally enriched in periodontitis subjects like L-urobilin and kynurenic acid. We revealed a periodontitis-oriented integrative network cluster, which was centered with fecal Coprococcus and L-urobilin as well as serum triglyceride. CONCLUSIONS: The current findings about the notable influence of periodontitis on fecal microbiota and metabolites in first-trimester pregnant women via oral-gut axis signify the importance and translational implications of preconceptional oral/periodontal healthcare for enhancing maternal wellbeing.

OBJECTIVES: Prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is important in individuals with metabolic syndrome components (MetS), and periodontitis may play an important role in this process. This study aims to evaluate the association between periodontitis and ASCVD in participants with the components of MetS, including obesity, dysglycemia, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study conducted followed the MOOSE reporting guidelines and the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. EMBASE, MEDLINE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, PubMed and OpenGrey were searched for observational studies about the linkage of periodontitis to ASCVD in people with MetS components up to April 9, 2023. Cohort, case-control and cross-sectional studies were included after study selection. Quality evaluation was carried out using the original and modified Newcastle-Ottawa Scale as appropriate. Random-effects model was employed for meta-analysis. RESULTS: Nineteen studies were finally included in the quality analysis, and all of them were assessed as moderate to high quality. Meta-analyses among fifteen studies revealed that the participants with periodontitis were more likely to develop ASCVD in those who have dysglycemia (RR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.13-1.37; p < 0.05), obesity (RR = 1.13, 95% CI = 1.02-1.24; p < 0.05), dyslipidemia (RR = 1.36, 95% CI = 1.13-1.65; p < 0.05), or hypertension (1.20, 95% CI = 1.05-1.36; p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Periodontitis promotes the development of ASCVD in participants with one MetS component (obesity, dysglycemia, hypertension or dyslipidemia). CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In people with MetS components, periodontitis may contribute to the ASCVD incidence.

OBJECTIVE: It is evident that periodontitis is linked to various adverse pregnancy outcomes. This prospective study explored the potential link of maternal periodontal diseases to neonatal adverse outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 193 generally healthy females in their third trimester (34-36 weeks) of pregnancy were enrolled. All subjects received full-mouth periodontal assessment, and the periodontal inflamed surface area (PISA) was calculated. Demographic data, lifestyles and anthropometric measurements of the neonates (e.g., body length and head circumference) were recorded. Herein, small-for-gestational age (SGA) referred to gender- and age-adjusted birth weight below the 10th percentile in line with the standard reference. Multivariable logistic regression analysis and restricted cubic spline were performed for examining the association of periodontal parameters with SGA.  Results: There were 8.3% (16/193) of neonates with SGA. Significantly positive correlation existed between the percentage of tooth sites with increased probing depth and an elevated risk of SGA (OR: 1.052; P < 0.05). Yet, the PISA was positively associated with the risk of SGA (OR: 1.002; P < 0.05) as well. No significant link occurred between maternal periodontal status and other neonatal outcome measures. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study, the findings suggest that there could be a link between maternal periodontal diseases and neonatal adverse outcomes like SGA. Further investigation is required to clarify the current findings and potential implications for promoting maternal oral/periodontal health and newborn health.

BACKGROUND: Mechanosensitive ion channel PIEZOs have been widely reported to involve inflammation and pain. This study aimed to clarify expression patterns of PIEZOs and their potential relations to irreversible pulpitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Normal pulp tissues (n = 29) from patients with impacted third molars and inflamed pulp tissues (n = 23) from patients with irreversible pulpitis were collected. Pain levels were assessed using a numerical rating scale. PIEZO expressions were measured using real-time PCR and then confirmed using GEO datasets GSE77459, immunoblot, and immunohistochemistry staining. Correlations of PIEZO mRNA expression with inflammatory markers, pain markers, or clinical pain levels were evaluated using Spearman's correlation analysis. Univariate analysis was conducted to analyze PIEZO expressions based on pain description and clinical examinations of cold test, percussion, palpation, and bite test. RESULTS: Compared with normal pulp tissues, mRNA expression levels of PIEZO1 were significantly increased in inflamed pulp tissues, while PIEZO2 was significantly decreased, which was further confirmed in GSE77459 and on a protein and histological level. The positive correlation of the mRNA expression levels between PIEZO1 and inflammatory markers, as well as between PIEZO2 and pain markers, was verified. PIEZO2 expression was also positively correlated with pain levels. Besides, irreversible pulpitis patients who reported continuous pain and who detected a positive response to cold stimulus exhibited a higher expression level of PIEZO2 in the inflamed pulp tissues. By contrast, patients reporting pain duration of more than one week showed a higher expression level of PIEZO1. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated the upregulation of PIEZO1 and the downregulation of PIEZO2 in irreversible pulpitis and revealed the potential relation of PIEZO1 and PIEZO2 to inflammation and pain. These findings suggested that PIEZOs might play critical roles in the progression of irreversible pulpitis and paved the way for further investigations aimed at novel therapies of irreversible pulpitis by targeting PIEZOs.

Realizing fully stretchable electronic materials is central to advancing new types of mechanically agile and skin-integrable optoelectronic device technologies. Here we demonstrate a materials design concept combining an organic semiconductor film with a honeycomb porous structure with biaxially prestretched platform that enables high-performance organic electrochemical transistors with a charge transport stability over 30-140% tensional strain, limited only by metal contact fatigue. The prestretched honeycomb semiconductor channel of donor-acceptor polymer poly(2,5-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-3,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)-2,5-diketo-pyrrolopyrrole-alt-2,5-bis(3-triethyleneglycoloxy-thiophen-2-yl) exhibits high ion uptake and completely stable electrochemical and mechanical properties over 1,500 redox cycles with 104 stretching cycles under 30% strain. Invariant electrocardiogram recording cycles and synapse responses under varying strains, along with mechanical finite element analysis, underscore that the present stretchable organic electrochemical transistor design strategy is suitable for diverse applications requiring stable signal output under deformation with low power dissipation and mechanical robustness.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and periodontitis significantly affect women's oral and systemic health worldwide, and yet increase the risk of cardiovascular-metabolic diseases like diabetes and coronary heart disease. Regarding the PCOS-periodontitis connection, whether sex hormones, metabolic and inflammatory mediators could account for the underlying linking mechanism needs to be further investigated. This case-control study evaluated the hormonal, metabolic and inflammatory profiles in PCOS and non-PCOS subjects with various periodontal conditions, via assessing serum and saliva samples by Raman spectroscopy. METHODS: A total of 66 females with PCOS and 22 systemically healthy female volunteers were recruited in a single hospital. Full-mouth periodontal examination was undertaken for identifying the subjects with periodontal health, gingivitis or periodontitis. The datasets of sex hormones and metabolic indicators were retrieved from the hospital information system. Both serum and saliva samples were collected for detecting inflammatory mediators and Raman spectroscopic assessment. The subjects were categorized into four groups according to their conditions of PCOS and periodontitis for Raman spectroscopic analysis. Partial least squares discriminant analysis was performed to examine the inter-group differences in Raman spectra. RESULTS: PCOS patients exhibited greater mean probing depth (P < 0.05) and higher serum levels of triglycerides (P < 0.05) and matrix metalloproteinase-8 (P < 0.05) than those in non-PCOS participants. Both probing depth and triglyceride level were positively correlated with PCOS (P < 0.05). There was a significant difference in mean Raman spectra of saliva samples among the four groups with different conditions of PCOS and periodontitis (P < 0.05), while no significant inter-group difference existed in serum samples. CONCLUSIONS: The present study shows that periodontal condition may affect the biomolecular profiles of Raman spectra in serum and saliva of PCOS patients. It underscores the importance of the collaborative teamwork of dentists and gynecologists for enhancing women's oral health, general wellbeing and quality of life.

AIM: This study evaluated the connection of periodontal status with the leukocyte profiles of maternal peripheral blood (MPB) and umbilical cord blood (UCB). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-nine pregnant females were recruited, and their data were collected via questionnaire and from medical records, including demographics, systemic conditions, complete blood count (CBC) and C-reaction protein (CRP) level in MPB. Full-mouth periodontal assessment was performed. CBC and CRP levels in UCB were measured after parturition. RESULTS: All subjects and their neonates were generally healthy. 30.3% of the participants presented with periodontal health condition, whereas 69.7% had different severities of periodontal diseases. The counts/percentages of eosinophils and monocytes in UCB from the subjects with periodontal diseases elevated, and the percentage of neutrophils decreased referencing to that from the counterparts (p < 0.05). There were positive correlations for total leukocyte count, neutrophils and lymphocytes counts/percentages in MPB and UCB among the periodontally healthy subjects (r > 0.4, p < 0.05), but such findings did not exist in those with periodontal diseases. Moreover, periodontal diseases independently accounted for the counts/percentages of neutrophils and eosinophils in UCB after controlling confounders in four testing models (ANCOVA, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Maternal periodontal diseases could to some extent disturb the leukocyte profiles of umbilical cord blood.

BACKGROUND: The development of deep learning (DL) algorithms for use in dentistry is an emerging trend. Periodontitis is one of the most prevalent oral diseases, which has a notable impact on the life quality of patients. Therefore, it is crucial to classify periodontitis accurately and efficiently. This systematic review aimed to identify the application of DL for the classification of periodontitis and assess the accuracy of this approach. METHODS: A literature search up to November 2023 was implemented through EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were used to screen eligible studies, and the quality of the studies was evaluated by the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) methodology with the QUADAS-2 (Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies) tool. Random-effects inverse-variance model was used to perform the meta-analysis of a diagnostic test, with which pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio (LR), negative LR, and diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) were calculated, and a summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) plot was constructed. RESULTS: Thirteen studies were included in the meta-analysis. After excluding an outlier, the pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive LR, negative LR and DOR were 0.88 (95%CI 0.82-0.92), 0.82 (95%CI 0.72-0.89), 4.9 (95%CI 3.2-7.5), 0.15 (95%CI 0.10-0.22) and 33 (95%CI 19-59), respectively. The area under the SROC was 0.92 (95%CI 0.89-0.94). CONCLUSIONS: The accuracy of DL-based classification of periodontitis is high, and this approach could be employed in the future to reduce the workload of dental professionals and enhance the consistency of classification.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Our recent work shows that periodontitis experience reflects host susceptibility to the onset of multiple systemic diseases and conditions. This cross-sectional study further investigated whether and to what extent the existing periodontitis could reflect the concurrent presence of inflammatory comorbidities among 'self-perceived health' individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: There were 115 'self-perceived health' adults who completed a questionnaire on demographic characteristics and lifestyles. Twenty medical diagnostic tests were then performed to detect eight common systemic diseases and conditions. Meanwhile, full-mouth periodontal examination was undertaken, and the subjects were classified as two subgroups with or without Generalized Severe Periodontitis (Stages III/IV, generalized). The interlink of periodontal status and concurrent systemic comorbidities was assessed. RESULTS: 98.3% (113/115) of the subjects exhibited at least one undiagnosed systemic disease/disorder. Of them, 52.2% (59/113) and 47.8% (54/113) concurrently presented with 1-5 or ≥6 abnormal test results, respectively. Overall, 96.5% (111/115) had periodontitis. Generalized Severe Periodontitis was present in 43.2% (48/111) of the periodontitis patients, and it was significantly associated with the profiles of abnormal test results after adjusting potential confounders (abnormal test results 1-5 vs ≥6; OR: 3.23, p = .012). CONCLUSIONS: The present study shows that existing severe periodontitis could well reflect the concurrent presence of multiple inflammatory comorbidities. Oral and medical professionals can play proactive roles in enhancing health awareness and healthcare, through strong collaboration and teamwork.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: There is a limited number of studies on the performance assessment of the 2017 AAP/EFP classification and the CDC/AAP case definition among pregnant females. This study evaluated the agreement between these two systems and explored a practical tool for screening maternal periodontal diseases by general dentists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Totally, 204 systemically healthy females at different phases of pregnancy underwent a full-mouth periodontal examination. Demographic characteristics, lifestyles, and systemic conditions were recorded. Referring to the CDC/AAP definition, the diagnostic performance of the AAP/EFP classification was evaluated by the area under the ROC curve (AUC) and statistical tests (e.g., Youden's index and kappa coefficient). Additionally, a modified scoring system of the FDI Periodontal Diseases Chairside Guide (FDI-CG) was formulated with the addition of pregnancy for testing accordingly. RESULTS: Overall, there were 22.1% of the participants in early phase of pregnancy (7-13 weeks) and 77.9% in late phase (34-36 weeks). The majority of them were below 35 years and non-smokers without gestational diabetes. Notably, 30.9% of subjects presented with Moderate/Severe periodontitis (CDC/AAP), and 35.8% with Stages II-IV periodontitis (AAP/EFP). Referring to the CDC/AAP definition, the AUC, Youden's index, and κ of the AAP/EFP classification were 0.979, 0.890, and 92.9%, respectively. The modified FDI-CG system improved the AUC (0.815), Youden's index (63.0%), and κ (0.544) with reference to the original one. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that the AAP/EFP classification is in high agreement with the CDC/AAP definition among the pregnant women. The phases of pregnancy-integrated FDI scoring system may serve as a convenient screening tool for maternal periodontal diseases in general dental practice.

OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study investigated the association of periodontitis with the metabolic status and hepatic function in pregnant women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Full-mouth periodontal conditions, metabolic profiles, and hepatic function were assessed in 219 self-reported healthy pregnant females. The association of periodontal status with the systemic parameters was evaluated by parametric and non-parametric tests, and multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Overall, periodontal status was positively associated with the metabolic profiles and hepatic function test results. The subjects with periodontitis exhibited higher levels of body mass index (BMI) (p < 0.01) and serum aspartate transaminase (AST) (p < 0.05), elevated diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (p < 0.05), and lower levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (p < 0.05) than those of the counterparts. The periodontitis severity was strongly correlated with BMI and AST levels, and the extent of periodontal inflammation was related to DBP (p < 0.01). The periodontitis patients at 34-36 gestational weeks showed higher blood pressure and AST levels than those of non-periodontitis subjects (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Our findings on the notable links of periodontitis to concurrent metabolic disorders and abnormal liver function in pregnant women highlight the need of proactive integration of regular periodontal screening and healthcare in maternal programs for promoting optimal health and wellbeing of mothers-to-be and newborns.

Herein, we evaluated the potential therapeutic effects of water extracts from Eucommia on periodontitis in experimental rats. We ligated the maxillary second molars of Sprague-Dawley(SD) rats with 4.0 silk threads and locally smeared Porphyromonas gingivalis(P. gingivalis) to induce gingivitis and periodontitis.After the model was successfully established, we exposed the rats to Eucommia water extracts through topical smearing and intragastric administration and evaluated the therapeutic effect of the extracts on gingivitis (for a 2 week treatment period) and periodontitis (over 4 weeks). We analyzed histopathological sections of the periodontal tissue and quantified the alveolar bone resorption levels, molecules related to periodontal oxidative stress, and periodontal inflammatory factors to assess the feasibility of Eucommia in treating gingivitis and periodontitis. We found that damage to the periodontal tissue was reduced after treatment with extracts,indicating that Eucommia has a positive effect in treating gingivitis and periodontitis in experimental rats. These findings are expected to provide the foothold for future research on secondary metabolites derived from Eucommia and guide the development of novel approaches for preventing and treating periodontal disease.

Thermosensitive polypeptide hydrogels have gained considerable attention in potential biomedical applications, of which the polymer structure may be tuned by residue chirality. In this study, polypeptide-based block copolymers with different chiralities were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of γ-ethyl-l-glutamate N-carboxyanhydride and/or γ-ethyl-d-glutamate N-carboxyanhydride using amino-terminated monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol) as a macroinitiator. All mPEG-polypeptide copolymers underwent sol-gel transition with an increase in temperature. The block copolymers with mixed enantiomeric residues of γ-ethyl-l-glutamate (ELG) and γ-ethyl-d-glutamate (EDG) in the polypeptide blocks exhibited lower critical gelation concentrations and lower critical gelation temperatures compared with those composed of pure ELG or EDG residues. We established that the difference in gelation properties between the copolymers was derived from the distinction of the secondary structures. We further demonstrated the influence of polypeptide chirality on the degradability and biocompatibility of hydrogels in vivo. Our findings provide insights into the design of hydrogels having tailored secondary conformation, gelation property, and biodegradability.

Thermoreversible hydrogels are attractive materials for biomedical applications, but their applications are still limited by nonbiodegradability and/or slow temperature-dependent gel-to-sol transition rates. In this research, we prepared a range of amphiphilic diblock, triblock, and four-armed star block copolymers composed of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(γ-(2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)ethyl)-l-glutamate) (P(EEO2LG)) segments, which can form rapidly thermoreversible hydrogels at physiological temperature. Intriguingly, the obtained hydrogels can transform from gel to sol within 10-70 s in response to the temperature decrease from 37 to 0 °C. The thermosensitive sol-gel-sol transitions are markedly faster than previously reported thermoreversible PEG-poly(l-glutamate) derivative hydrogels with subtle differences in the side groups and a widely studied poly(d,l-lactide-co-glycolide)-b-PEG-b-poly(d,l-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA-PEG-PLGA) hydrogel that required a much longer time of 40∼150 min. Further investigation of the relationship between the hydrogel property and polymer structure is performed, and the self-assembly mechanisms of different copolymers are proposed. Cytotoxicity assays and subcutaneous degradation experiments reveal that the PEG/P(EEO2LG) block copolymers are biocompatible and biodegradable. The polypeptide hydrogel can therefore be used as a three-dimensional platform for facile cell culture and collection by regulating the temperature.

Fabrication of multifunctional porous fibers with excellent mechanical properties has attracted abundant attention in the fields of personal thermal management textiles and smart wearable devices. However, the high cost and harsh preparation environment of the traditional solution-solvent phase separation method for making porous fibers aggravates the problems of resource consumption and environmental pollution. Herein, a microextrusion process that combines environmentally friendly CO2 physical foaming with fused deposition modeling technology is proposed, via the dual features of high gas uptake and restricted cell growth, to implement the continuous production of porous polyetheretherketone (PEEK) fibers with a production efficiency of 10.5 cm s-1 . The porous PEEK fiber exhibits excellent stretchability (234.8% strain) and good high-temperature thermal insulation property. The open-cell structure on the surface is favorable for the adsorption to achieve superhydrophobicity (154.4°) and high-efficiency photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (90.4%). Moreover, the parameterized controllability of the cell structure is beneficial to widening the multifunctional window. In short, the first porous PEEK physical foaming fiber, which opens up a new avenue for the application expansion, especially in the medical field, is realized.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between dietary and drinking water habits and oral health are still unclear. We aimed at evaluating the association of dietary and drinking water habits with number of teeth in the elderly adults. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal study based on the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey from 1998 to 2018. The data of dietary and drinking water habits at baseline were collected using a questionnaire. The number of teeth at baseline and follow-up was collected for each subject. We used the linear mixed-effect model to analyze the associations of dietary habits and drinking water sources with tooth number. RESULTS: Among 19,896 participants at baseline, the mean age of the participants was 83.87 years, with the average number of natural teeth of 9.37, 8.26, 8.38, 8.68, 4.05, 1.92, 1.12, 2.20 for the first to eighth waves of survey. Compared with subjects drinking tap water, 1.036 (95 % CI: -1.206, -0.865), 0.880 (95 % CI: -1.122, -0.637) and 1.331 (95 % CI: -1.715, -0.947) fewer natural teeth were reported for those drinking well, surface water and spring at baseline survey. Compared with participants with rice intake as the staple food, those with wheat intake (ß = -0.684; 95 % CI: -0.865, -0.503) tended to have fewer natural teeth. Compared with participants with fresh fruit intake almost every day, those with quite often intake of fresh fruit tended to have fewer teeth with a significant dose-response trend (Ptrend <0.001). Similar decreased trend for number of teeth was also indicated for increased frequency of vegetable intake (Ptrend <0.001). Fewer number of teeth was found for subjects with less frequency of meat and fish intakes. CONCLUSIONS: The study suggested that drinking well, surface water, and spring, intakes of wheat as staple food, as well as less frequency of fresh fruit, vegetable, meat and fish intakes were associated with significantly fewer number of teeth in the Chinese elderly population.

It is well known that neutrophil-mediated delivery of therapeutic agents is a promising method for treating tumors. However, owing to the limited number and limited uptake ability of neutrophils, determining a reasonable dose has become an urgent problem to be solved. Furthermore, the number of nanoparticles is far greater than the number of neutrophils at normal doses, which causes excessive nanoparticles to reach nontargeted organs or tissues, leading to serious adverse effects. To address these problems, a neutrophil-targeting delivery system (DiR-DADGC-L) based on DiR-labeled and butanedioic acid (DA)-linked 5-amino-3,5-dideoxy-D-Glycerol-D-galactonanulose-cholesterol conjugate (DADGC) was designed to improve the efficiency of hitchhiking neutrophils through the specific binding of sialic acid (SA) to L-selectin (SA-binding receptor, expressed on neutrophils). DiR-DADGC-L was prepared with favorable particle size and encapsulation efficiency (%EE) to deliver DiR into neutrophils. Subsequently, diverse doses of DiR-DADGC-L were injected intravenously into S180 tumor-bearing and cyclophosphamide-depleted (CTX-D) S180 tumor-bearing mice to evaluate the in vivo behavior of liposomes. The results verified the following: a) The content of DiR-DADGC-L in neutrophils accounts for approximately 14.5% of the content of DiR-DADGC-L in plasma, and the uptake capacity of neutrophils remains unchanged under different doses, and b) both neutrophils and the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect might exert significant roles in tumor treatment. As for the neutrophil-mediated delivery system, higher doses are not necessarily appropriate, and a lower dose may achieve an unexpected effect. It will be wise to determine an optimum dose to improve delivery efficiency.

Advanced porous materials (APMs)-such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and porous organic polymers (POPs)-have emerged as an exciting research frontier of chemistry and materials science. Given their tunable pore size and extensive diversity, APMs have found widespread applications. In addition, adding dynamic functional groups to porous solids furthers the development of stimuli-responsive materials. By incorporating moving elements-molecular rotors-into the porous frameworks, molecular-rotor-driven advanced porous materials (MR-APMs) can respond reversibly to chemical and physical stimuli, thus imparting dynamic functionalities that have not been found in conventional porous materials. This Minireview discusses exemplary MR-APMs in terms of their design, synthesis, rotor dynamics, and potential applications.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review evaluated the impacts of non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and periodontitis in order to explore causality and assess the potential benefits of co-management. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analyses were conducted by searching MEDLINE, EMBASE, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Open GREY. Interventional studies of adult patients suffering from CKD and periodontitis were investigated. Effect of NSPT on renal function was analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 109 participants from four case-series studies and 97 participants from one randomized controlled trial were included in this review. Sixty percent of the eligible studies (3/5) aimed at the effect of NSPT on nutritional status and systemic inflammation in dialysis patients. The other two studies concluded a beneficial impact of NSPT on estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in patients with CKD stages 2-4. Moreover, two meta-analyses were accomplished on eGFR and serum creatinine to evaluate the changes between baseline and 3-month follow-up. The pooled mean of eGFR was not significantly different pre- and post-NSPT using random and fixed-effect models. The change for creatinine was not significant using the random effect model but was significant when the fixed effect model was used (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: There is insufficient evidence to conclude the potential benefit of NSPT on renal function in CKD patients with periodontitis. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Periodontitis contributes to the inflammatory burden and has been associated with impaired kidney function in many observational studies. However, well-designed clinical trials in pre-dialysis patients investigating the impact of NSPT on renal function-related parameters are missing.

For the precise treatment of tumors, it is necessary to develop a theranostic nanoplatform that has both diagnostic and therapeutic functions. In this article, we designed a new theranostic probe for fluorescence imaging of Zn2+ and fluorescence/MRI guided magnetically targeted photodynamic-photothermal therapy. The fluorescence imaging of Zn2+ was based on an endogenous ATP-driven DNA nanomachine that could perform repetitive stand displacement reaction. It modifies all units on a single PDA/Fe3O4 nanoparticle containing a hairpin-locked initiated strand activated by a target molecule in cells, a two-stranded fuel DNA triggered by ATP, and a two-stranded DNA track responding to an initiated strand and fuel DNA. After entering the cell, the intracellular target Zn2+ initiates the nanomachine via an autocatalytic cleavage reaction, and the machine programmatically and gradually runs on the assembled DNA track via fuel DNA driving and the intramolecular toehold-mediated stand displacement reaction. The Fe3O4 core first exhibits magnetic targeting, increasing the ability of nanoparticles to enter tumor cells at the tumor site. The Fe3O4 could also be employed as a powerful magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent and guided therapy. Using 808 nm laser and 635 nm laser irradiation together at the tumor site, the PDA nanoshell produced an excellent photothermal effect and the TMPyP4 molecules entering the cell generated reactive oxygen species, followed by cell damage. A series of reliable experiments suggested that the Fe3O4@PDA@DNA nanoprobe showed superior fluorescence specificity, MRI, a remarkable photothermal/photodynamic therapy effect, and favorable biocompatibility. This theranostic nanoplatform offered a split-new insight into tumor fluorescence and MRI diagnosis as well as effective tumor therapy.
