RESUMEN

Electrocaloric1,2 and electrostrictive3,4 effects concurrently exist in dielectric materials. Combining these two effects could achieve the lightweight, compact localized thermal management that is promised by electrocaloric refrigeration5. Despite a handful of numerical models and schematic presentations6,7, current electrocaloric refrigerators still rely on external accessories to drive the working bodies8-10 and hence result in a low device-level cooling power density and coefficient of performance (COP). Here we report an electrocaloric thin-film device that uses the electro-thermomechanical synergy provided by polymeric ferroelectrics. Under one-time a.c. electric stimulation, the device is thermally and mechanically cycled by the working body itself, resulting in an external-driver-free, self-cycling, soft refrigerator. The prototype offers a directly measured cooling power density of 6.5 W g-1 and a peak COP exceeding 58 under a zero temperature span. Being merely a 30-µm-thick polymer film, the device achieved a COP close to 24 under a 4 K temperature span in an open ambient environment (32% thermodynamic efficiency). Compared with passive cooling, the thin-film refrigerator could immediately induce an additional 17.5 K temperature drop against an electronic chip. The soft, polymeric refrigerator can sense, actuate and pump heat to provide automatic localized thermal management.

RESUMEN

Cooling sensations arise inside the mouth during ingestive and homeostasis behaviors. Oral presence of cooling temperature engages the cold and menthol receptor TRPM8 (transient receptor potential melastatin 8) on trigeminal afferents. Yet, how TRPM8 influences brain and behavioral responses to oral temperature is undefined. Here we used in vivo neurophysiology to record action potentials stimulated by cooling and warming of oral tissues from trigeminal nucleus caudalis neurons in female and male wild-type and TRPM8 gene deficient mice. Using these lines, we also measured orobehavioral licking responses to cool and warm water in a novel, temperature-controlled fluid choice test. Capture of antidromic electrophysiological responses to thalamic stimulation identified that wild-type central trigeminal neurons showed diverse responses to oral cooling. Some neurons displayed relatively strong excitation to cold <10°C (COLD neurons) while others responded to only a segment of mild cool temperatures below 30°C (COOL neurons). Notably, TRPM8 deficient mice retained COLD-type but lacked COOL cells. This deficit impaired population responses to mild cooling temperatures below 30°C and allowed warmth-like (≥35°C) neural activity to pervade the normally innocuous cool temperature range, predicting TRPM8 deficient mice would show anomalously similar orobehavioral responses to warm and cool temperatures. Accordingly, TRPM8 deficient mice avoided both warm (35°C) and mild cool (≤30°C) water and sought colder temperatures in fluid licking tests, whereas control mice avoided warm but were indifferent to mild cool and colder water. Results imply TRPM8 input separates cool from warm temperature sensing and suggest other thermoreceptors also participate in oral cooling sensation.

RESUMEN

The cold pressor test (CPT) elicits strong cardiovascular reactions via activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), yielding subsequent increases in heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP). However, little is known on how exposure to the CPT affects cardiac ventricular repolarization. Twenty-eight healthy males underwent both a bilateral feet CPT and a warm water (WW) control condition on two separate days, one week apart. During pre-stress baseline and stress induction cardiovascular signals (ECG lead II, Finometer BP) were monitored continuously. Salivary cortisol and subjective stress ratings were assessed intermittently. Corrected QT (QTc) interval length and T-wave amplitude (TWA) were assessed for each heartbeat and subsequently aggregated individually over baseline and stress phases, respectively. CPT increases QTc interval length and elevates the TWA. Stress-induced changes in cardiac repolarization are only in part and weakly correlated with cardiovascular and cortisol stress-reactivity. Besides its already well-established effects on cardiovascular, endocrine, and subjective responses, CPT also impacts on cardiac repolarization by elongation of QTc interval length and elevation of TWA. CPT effects on cardiac repolarization share little variance with the other indices of stress reactivity, suggesting a potentially incremental value of this parameter for understanding psychobiological adaptation to acute CPT stress.

RESUMEN

Nowadays, wearable devices derived from flexible conductive hydrogels have attracted enormous attention. Nevertheless, the utilization of conductive hydrogels in practical applications under extreme conditions remains a significant challenge. Herein, a series of inorganic salt-ion-enhanced conductive hydrogels (HPE-LiCl) consisting of hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl acrylate, lithium chloride, and ethylene glycol/water binary solvent were fabricated via a facile one-pot method. Apart from outstanding self-adhesion, high stretchability, and remarkable fatigue resistance, the HPE-LiCl hydrogels possessed especially excellent antifreezing and long-lasting moisture performances, which could maintain satisfactory flexibility and electric conductivity over extended periods of time, even in challenging conditions such as extremely low temperatures (as low as -40 °C) and high temperatures (as high as 80 °C). Consequently, the HPE-LiCl-based sensor could timely and accurately monitor various human motion signals even in adverse environments and after long-term storage. Hence, this work presents a facile strategy for the design of long-term reliable hydrogels as smart strain sensors, especially used in extreme environments.

RESUMEN

Transient terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) imaging has emerged as a novel non-ionizing and noninvasive biomedical imaging modality, designed for the detection and characterization of a variety of tissue malignancies due to their high signal-to-noise ratio and submillimeter resolution. We report our design of a pair of aspheric focusing lenses using a commercially available lens-design software that resulted in about 200 × 200-µm2 focal spot size corresponding to the 1-THz frequency. The lenses are made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) obtained using a lathe fabrication and are integrated into a THz-TDS system that includes low-temperature GaAs photoconductive antennae as both a THz emitter and detector. The system is used to generate high-resolution, two-dimensional (2D) images of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded murine pancreas tissue blocks. The performance of these focusing lenses is compared to the older system based on a pair of short-focal-length, hemispherical polytetrafluoroethylene (TeflonTM) lenses and is characterized using THz-domain measurements, resulting in 2D maps of the tissue refractive index and absorption coefficient as imaging markers. For a quantitative evaluation of the lens effect on the image resolution, we formulated a lateral resolution parameter, R2080, defined as the distance required for a 20-80% transition of the imaging marker from the bare paraffin region to the tissue region in the same image frame. The R2080 parameter clearly demonstrates the advantage of the HDPE lenses over TeflonTM lenses. The lens-design approach presented here can be successfully implemented in other THz-TDS setups with known THz emitter and detector specifications.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic irreversible pulpitis often results in heightened reactions to thermal stimuli such as pain evoked by a cold stimulus, and spontaneous odontogenic pain (unprovoked pain). OBJECTIVE: This study primarily compared the clinical manifestations of odontogenic spontaneous pain and pain provoked by cold stimulus specifically focusing on their sensory discriminative characteristics (intensity, duration and quality) between symptomatic irreversible pulpitis patients with and without referred pain. METHODS: Twenty-three patients with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis with referred pain and 12 patients without referred pain were included in this cross-sectional study. The following outcomes were assessed: odontogenic spontaneous pain and its descriptors; pain evoked by cold stimulus and qualitative sensory testing before and after local anaesthesia; referred pain location; use of analgesic medication; complementary anaesthesia efficacy. T-test, chi-squared and McNemar tests were applied to the data (p < .50). RESULTS: Patients with referred pain presented a greater odontogenic pain intensity (p < .05) when considered the average of the last 24 h. These patients also showed higher pain rating and pain descriptors (p < .05). Intensity and duration of the pain evoked by cold stimulus in the non-affected contralateral tooth at baseline were higher for patients with referred pain (p < .05). CONCLUSION: Symptomatic irreversible pulpitis patients with referred pain present greater odontogenic spontaneous pain and a heightened pain sensitivity. Therefore, patients with referred pain seem more complex from a pain severity perspective, supporting the clinical utility of discriminating symptomatic irreversible pulpitis with and without referred pain.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: One of the most important steps in deciding on the treatment of a tooth is to determine the vitality and health status of the pulp. Since immature teeth innervation is not completed, the response to sensitivity tests may not yield definite results. Pulse oximetry (PO) which is considered as a vitality test, measures the arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2). This study aims to compare PO, electric pulp test (EPT) and cold test in mature and immature permanent teeth. METHODS: 20 immature and 20 mature permanent incisors of 6-12-year-old ASA1 children who did not use any analgesics, were included in the study. Pulp vitality of the teeth was determined by EPT, cold test and PO. An infant probe of PO device (CMS60D, Contec Medical Systems Co. Ltd, China) was used to determine the SpO2 of the teeth. The SpO2 level is controlled on the patient's finger by a children's probe and an infant probe of PO. Shapiro-Wilk, Spearman rank correlation test and Kruskal-Wallis test/Dunn post-hoc analysis were used for statistical comparisons. RESULTS: There was no significant correlation between finger SpO2 and the mature/immature teeth SpO2 (r=-0.026, r = 0.253). Arterial oxygen saturation values in the immature teeth were significantly higher than in the mature teeth (p = 0.002). There was a high correlation between the vitality response of the EPT, cold test and PO. CONCLUSIONS: Pulse oximetry can be used as an effective vitality test compared to sensitivity tests in both immature and mature permanent incisors.

RESUMEN

AIM: The current study was designed to assess the linear dimensional changes and adaptability of two heat-cured denture base resins using various cooling methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To prepare a total of 90 acrylic resin samples (45 acrylic resin samples for each material), four rectangular stainless-steel plates measuring 25 × 25 × 10 mm were fabricated. For both groups, the material was put into the mold at the dough stage. Group I - SR Triplex Hot Heat Cure acrylic; group II - DPI Heat Cure acrylic. Both groups used the same curing procedure. One of the following three techniques was used to cool the material (15 samples from each material) once the curing cycle was finished: (A) water bath, (b) quenching, and (C) air. A traveling microscope was used to measure the distance between the markings on the acrylic samples. The data was recorded and statistically analyzed. RESULTS: In SR Triplex Hot heat cure acrylic material, the maximum linear dimensional changes were found in the quenching technique (0.242 ± 0.05), followed by the air technique (0.168 ± 0.11) and the least was found in the water bath technique (0.146 ± 0.01). In DPI Heat Cure acrylic material, the maximum linear dimensional changes were found in the quenching technique (0.284 ± 0.09), followed by the air technique (0.172 ± 0.18) and the least was found in the water bath technique (0.158 ± 0.10). There was a statistically significant difference found between these three cooling techniques. On comparison of adaptability, the water bath technique, the marginal gap SR Triplex Hot was 0.012 ± 0.02 and DPI Heat Cure was 0.013 ± 0.02. In the quenching technique, the marginal gap SR Triplex Hot was 0.019 ± 0.04 and DPI Heat Cure was 0.016 ± 0.04. In the air technique, the marginal gap SR Triplex Hot was 0.017 ± 0.01 and DPI Heat Cure was 0.019 ± 0.01. CONCLUSION: The present study concluded that among the different cooling methods, the water bath technique had the least linear dimensional change, followed by the air and quenching techniques. When comparing the materials, DPI Heat Cure acrylic resin showed a greater linear dimensional change than SR Triplex Hot heat cure acrylic resin. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: During polymerization, heat-cured acrylic resins experience dimensional changes. Shrinkage and expansion are dimensional changes that occur in heat-cured acrylic resins and have an impact on the occlusal relationship and denture fit. However, the denture base's material qualities and the different temperature variations it experiences during production may have an impact on this. RESUMEN

RAFT solution polymerization is used to polymerize 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA). The resulting PHPMA precursor is then chain-extended using N,N'-dimethylacrylamide (DMAC) to produce a series of thermoresponsive PHPMA-PDMAC diblock copolymers. Such amphiphilic copolymers can be directly dispersed in ice-cold water and self-assembled at 20 °C to form spheres, worms, or vesicles depending on their copolymer composition. Construction of a pseudo-phase diagram is required to identify the pure worm phase, which corresponds to a rather narrow range of PDMAC DPs. Such worms form soft, free-standing gels in aqueous solution at around ambient temperature. Rheology studies confirm the thermoresponsive nature of such worms, which undergo a reversible worm-to-sphere on cooling below ambient temperature. This morphological transition leads to in situ degelation, and variable temperature 1H NMR studies indicate a higher degree of (partial) hydration for the weakly hydrophobic PHPMA chains at lower temperatures. The trithiocarbonate end-group located at the end of each PDMAC chain can be removed by treatment with excess hydrazine. The resulting terminal secondary thiol group can form disulfide bonds via coupling, which produces PHPMA-PDMAC-PHPMA triblock copolymer chains. Alternatively, this reactive thiol group can be used for conjugation reactions. A PHPMA141-PDMAC36 worm gel was used to store human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for up to three weeks at 37 °C. MSCs retrieved from this gel subsequently underwent proliferation and maintained their ability to differentiate into osteoblastic cells.

RESUMEN

Shortwave infrared (SWIR, λ = 1-3 µm) photodetectors typically use compound semiconductors that are fabricated using high-temperature epitaxial growth and require active cooling. New technologies that overcome these constraints are the focus of intensive current research. Herein, oxidative chemical vapor deposition (oCVD) is used for the first time to create a room temperature, vapor-phase deposited SWIR photoconductive detector with a unique tangled wire film morphology that detects nW-level photons emitted from a 500 °C cavity blackbody radiator-a rarity for polymer systems. A new, window-based process that greatly simplifies device fabrication is used to construct doped polythiophene-based SWIR sensors. The detectors feature an 8.97 kΩ dark resistance and are limited by 1/f noise. They feature an external quantum efficiency (gain-external quantum efficiency) product of 395% and have a measured specific detectivity (D*) of 106 Jones, with the potential to reach D* = 1010 Jones after 1/f noise is minimized. Still, the measured D* is only a factor of 102 lower than a typical microbolometer and after optimization, the newly described oCVD polymer-based IR detectors will be in a category competitive with commercially available, room temperature lead salt photoconductors and within reach of room temperature photodiodes.

RESUMEN

Passive daytime radiation cooling (PDRC) has gained considerable attention as an emerging and promising cooling technology. Polymer-based porous materials are one of the important candidates for PDRC application due to their easy processing, free of inorganic particle doping, and multifunctionality. However, the mechanical properties of these porous materials, which are critical in outdoor services, have been overlooked in previous studies. Herein, a nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) method combined with ambient pressure drying to prepare polyethylene-polysilicate all-polymer porous coatings is developed. The coatings possess a Cyphochilus beetle-like skeleton structure with optimal skeleton size, laminated anisotropy, and high volume fraction (64 ± 1%). These structure features ensure a maximum skeleton density without optical crowding, thus enhancing light scattering and stress dispersion, and balancing optical and mechanical properties. The coatings exhibit significant mechanical robustness (only ≈70 µm thickness reduction after 1000 Taber abrasion cycles at a 750 g load without influencing optical performance), durability, optical properties (a solar reflectance of ≈95% and an average near-normal thermal emittance of ≈96%), and PDRC performance (realizing sub-ambient cooling of ≈3-6 °C at midday with different weather conditions). The work provides a new solution to improve the practicability of polymer-based porous coatings in PDRC outdoor services and other fields.

RESUMEN

The twistocaloric effect is attributed to the change in entropy of the material driven by torsional stress. It is responsible for the torsional refrigeration of fiber materials that has been widely exploited as one of the solid-state cooling techniques with high efficiency and low volume change rate. The lack of theories and mathematical models of twistocaloric effect, however, limits broad applications of torsional refrigeration. In this work, a twistocaloric model is established to capture the relationship between twist density and temperature variation of natural rubber fibers and thermoplastic elastomer yarns. An experimental setup consisting torsion actuator and torque sensor coupled with a temperature measurement system is built to validate the model. Using the Maxwell relationship, twistocaloric coefficient is measured by quantifying the thermal effect induced by torsion under shear strain. The experimental characterization of the twistocaloric effect in natural rubber fiber and thermoplastic elastomer yarn are consistent with the theoretical predictions.

RESUMEN

Personal thermal management (PTM) materials have attracted increasing attention owing to their application for personal comfort in an energy-saving mode. However, they normally work in the same media such as in the air, and little is known about what will happen in other media like water. In this study, a system for cross-media thermal management (CMTM): passive cooling in air and thermal insulation underwater is proposed. Hybrid aerogels comprising thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) matrix and superhydrophobic silica aerogel particle (SSAP) for CMTM are designed and synthesized using a thermally induced phase separation and self-templating strategy. The TPU matrix endows the aerogels with super stretchability (500%), shape memory, and outstanding healing recovery rate (89.9%), which are ideal characteristics for potential wearable usage. Additionally, the TPU and SSAP endow the aerogel with high solar reflectivity and infrared emissivity, thus achieving a sub-ambient cooling of 10.6 °C in air. Moreover, the SSAP endows the aerogels with low thermal conductivity (0.052 W m-1 ·K-1 ) and high hydrophobicity (143°), enabling the aerogels for underwater thermal insulation. The CMTM performance of the aerogels makes them for potential uses in cross-media environments such as reefs and islands where cooling in air and thermal insulation in water are required.

RESUMEN

Two liquid crystalline polymers containing an azobenzene or cyanobiphenyl mesogenic side chain that adopt smectic A phases are mechanically mixed at 1:1 mesogen molar ratio at an isotropic phase temperature and then cooled. The resultant binary polymer mixture behaves like a single component as revealed by polarized microscopy observation and differential scanning calorimetry, indicating that the binary mixture forms a fully compatible polymer blend. Moreover, the simple polymer blend unexpectedly leads to a higher-ordered smectic E phase where a herringbone structure is formed with restricted mesogen axis rotation. These results suggest a specific intermolecular interaction between the two mesogens, thereby inducing unusual compatibilized polymer blends and the most ordered liquid crystal (LC) phase.

RESUMEN

In the context of global climate change, organisms in their natural habitats usually suffer from unfavorable climatic conditions together with environmental pollution. Temperature and humidity (or moisture) are two central climatic factors, while their relationships with the toxicity of contaminants are not well understood. This review provides a synthesis of existing knowledge on important interactions between contaminant toxicity and climatic conditions of unfavorable temperature, soil moisture, and air humidity. Both high temperature and low moisture can extensively pose severe combined hazards with organic pollutants, heavy metal ions, nanoparticles, or microplastics. There is more information on the combined effects on animalia than on other kingdoms. Prevalent mechanisms underlying their joint effects include the increased bioavailability and bioaccumulation of contaminants, modified biotransformation of contaminants, enhanced induction of oxidative stress, accelerated energy consumption, interference with cell membranes, and depletion of bodily fluids. However, the interactions of contaminants with low temperature or high humidity/moisture, particularly on plants and microorganisms, are relatively vague and need to be further revealed. This work emphasizes that the co-exposure of chemical and physical stressors results in detrimental effects generally greater than those caused by either stressor. It is necessary to take this into consideration in the ecological risk assessment of both environmental contamination and climate change.

RESUMEN

The shell-closing strength (SCS) of oysters is the main parameter for physiological activities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the applicability of SCS as an indicator of live oyster health. This study developed a flexible pressure sensor system with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the substrate and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as the sensitive layer to monitor SCS in live oysters (rGO-PDMS). In the experiment, oysters of superior, medium and inferior grades were selected as research objects, and the change characteristics of SCS were monitored at 4 °C and 25 °C. At the same time, the time series model was used to predict the survival rate of live oyster on the basis of changes in their SCS characteristics. The survival times of superior, medium and inferior oysters at 4 °C and 25 °C were 31/25/18 days and 12/10/7 days, respectively, and the best prediction accuracies for survival rate were 89.32%/82.17%/79.19%. The results indicate that SCS is a key physiological indicator of oyster survival. The dynamic monitoring of oyster vitality by means of flexible pressure sensors is an important means of improving oyster survival rate. Superior oysters have a higher survival rate in low-temperature environments, and our method can provide effective and reliable survival prediction and management for the oyster industry.

RESUMEN

Recent advancements in vehicle automation and driver-assistance systems that detect pavement markings has increased the importance of the detectability of pavement markings through various sensor modalities across weather and road conditions. Among the sensing techniques, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors have become popular for vehicle-automation applications. This study used low-cost mobile multi-beam LiDAR to assess the performance of several types of pavement marking materials installed on a limited-access highway in various conditions, and quantified the degradation in detection performance over three years. Four marking materials, HPS-8, polyurea, cold plastic, and sprayable thermoplastic, were analyzed in the current study. LiDAR reflectivity data extracted from a total of 210 passes through the test sections were analyzed. A new detectability score based on LiDAR intensity data was proposed to quantify the marking detectability. The results showed that the pavement marking detectability varied across the material types over the years. The results provide guidance for selecting materials and developing maintenance schedules when marking detectability by LiDAR is a concern.

RESUMEN

Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) has received tremendous interest because of population growth, limited freshwater resources, and water pollution. However, key challenges remain in developing efficient, flexible, and lightweight AWH materials with scalability. Here, we demonstrated a radiative cooling fabric for AWH via its hierarchically structured cellulose network and hybrid sorption-dewing mechanisms. With 8.3% solar absorption and ∼0.9 infrared (IR) emissivity, the material can drop up to 7.5 °C below ambient temperature without energy consumption via radiative cooling. Water adsorption onto the hydrophilic functional groups of cellulose is dominated by sorption at low relative humidity (RH) and dewing at high RH. The cellulose network provides desirable mechanical properties with entangled high-aspect-ratio fibers over tens of adsorption-extraction cycles. In the field test, the cellulose sample exhibited water uptake of 1.29 kg/kg at 80% RH during the night. The profusion of radiative cooling fabric features desirable cost effectiveness and allows fast deployment into large-scale AWH applications.

RESUMEN

A passive cooling strategy without any electricity input has shown a significant impact on overall energy consumption globally. However, designing tunable daytime radiative cooler to meet requirement of different weather conditions is still a big challenge, especially in hot, humid regions. Here, a novel type of tunable, thermally insulating and compressible cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) aerogel coolers is prepared via chemical cross-linking and unidirectional freeze casting process. Such aerogel coolers can achieve a subambient temperature drop of 9.2 °C under direct sunlight and promisingly reached the reduction of ∼7.4 °C even in hot, moist, and fickle extreme surroundings. The tunable cooling performance can be realized via controlling the compression ratio of shape-malleable aerogel coolers. Furthermore, energy consumption modeling of using such aerogel coolers in buildings in China shows 35.4% reduction of cooling energy. This work can pave the way toward designing high-performance, thermal-regulating materials for energy consumption savings.

RESUMEN

Emission standards in European Union, designed to reduce the environmental impact of power generation, present a significant challenge for fast-response distributed power generation systems based on internal combustion engines. Regulated emissions, such as NOx and particulate matter present a major concern due to their adverse number of environmental and health effects. Simultaneously, European Union strives towards sustainable management of plastic waste and seeks the ways for its upcycling and production of new fuels and chemicals. As an answer to the presented challenges, the present experimental study addresses the potential for use of chemically stabilized Waste Plastics Oil (WPO), a product of pyrolysis process of waste plastics in a Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition (RCCI) combustion concept. To establish a reactivity-controlled combustion, the study uses a combination of methane (a model fuel for biomethane) and WPO to a) simultaneously reduce NOx and particulate matter emissions due to low local combustion temperatures and a high degree of charge homogenization and b) address waste and carbon footprint reduction challenges. Through experiments, influence of direct injection timing and energy shares of utilized fuels to in-cylinder thermodynamic parameters and engine emission response were evaluated in engine operating points at constant indicated mean effective pressure. Acquired results were deeply investigated and benchmarked against compression ignition (CI) and RCCI operation with conventional diesel fuel to determine potential for WPO utilization in an advanced low-temperature combustion concept. Results show that chemically stabilized WPO can be efficiently utilized in RCCI combustion concept without adaptation of injection parameters and that with suitable control parameters, ultra-low emissions of NOx and PM can be achieved with utilized fuels. For diesel/methane mix, NOx and PM emissions were reduced compared to conventional CI operation for 82.0% and 93.2%, respectively, whereas for WPO/methane mix, NOx and PM emissions were reduced for 88.7% and 97.6%, respectively, which can be ascribed to favourable chemical characteristics of WPO for the utilized combustion concept. In the least favourable operating point among those studied, indicated mean effective pressure covariance was kept below 2.5%, which is well below 5% being considered the limit for stable engine operation.
