RESUMEN

Objectives: To assess the risk of bias (RoB) of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in dental journals in the Spanish language. Methods: A systematic retrospective survey was conducted of all RCTs published from 1980 to 2019 in dentistry Spanish and Latin American journals. We extracted data and performed RoB assessments using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. Results: 292 RCTs published in 51 journals were included. The best-rated domains were incomplete outcome data, selective reporting, and other biases. The domains assessed with higher proportions of an unclear or high risk of bias were sequence generation, allocation concealment, and blinding of outcome assessment. There is a low proportion of RCTs published in Spanish language journals. However, the number has been increasing over the years, and the low risk of bias assessment rates across domains show an increasing trend. Conclusions: A low percentage of Spanish-language dental journals issue RCTs. Our assessment of these RCTs' RoB suggests higher difficulties in the design and conduction phase than in the posterior reporting stage.

RESUMEN

Scientific research and publication play an important role during the training of dentists, but one of the most outstanding barriers is the authorship conditions of the journals. Aim: The objective of the study was to determine the accessibility to student publication in dental journals in the world. Methods: A retrospective study was carried out. 208 journals indexed in Scimago Journal & Country Rank that met inclusion and exclusion criteria were included. The instructions for the authors were reviewed, an email was subsequently sent to the journal contact and articles with student affiliation were searched in the database of each journal. For the analysis of the descriptive statistical data of frequencies and percentage, the IBM SPPS Statistics Standard Edition 22 program was used. Results: 208 journals were included, 77.67% accepted the student publication without condition. The United States, United Kingdom and India were the countries with the highest number of journals with student participation. Likewise, the journals of Q4 (85.70%), Q3 (85.40%) and Basic Sciences (100%), Dental Education (100%), Endodontic (100%), Geriatrics and Gerontology (100%) and Public Dental Health (100%), mostly accepted student authorship. Conclusion: It is concluded that 167 (77.67%) of the dental journals accept the publication of dental students without condition, being more frequent in journals positioned in Q4 (85.70%). Also, journals with thematic areas on Basic Sciences, Dental Education, Endodontic, Geriatrics and Gerontology and Public Dental Health

Material and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, all 72 postgraduate dental assistants at Dentistry School of Kerman University of Medical Sciences were considered. Internet anxiety questionnaire included demographic questions and questions measuring online journals use and the barriers of using. The data then analyzed using independent t-test and linear regression, with significance level set at 5%. Results: The use of printed books was reported by 78.2% of the sample while the use of electronic books was 45.8%. The use of atlas was 28.9%, while the use of indexes and abstracts was 57.2. The participants used online journals mostly for research (30.8%) and education (27.7%). The most important advantages of online journals were fast access (25.1%) and easy use (19.9%). To get informed about online journals contents, they mostly used search engines and online databases (79%). The most important criterion was indexing in Web of Science (20.8%). A significant relationship between Internet anxiety and academic year was detected (p<0.05) also increase in internet use significantly increased Internet anxiety (p=0.001). We suggested increasing the knowledge and skill of dental students with online resources toward decreasing the level of their Internet anxiety. Conclusion: A reverse relationship was observed between the academic year and internet anxiety, in other words, senior students were more anxious than the junior ones. This study did not ask about computer literacy, other studies have reported a negative relationship between computer literacy, Internet literacy and internet anxiety, so it is suggested to increase the knowledge and skill of students with computer, internet and online resources.

Peer reviewing scientific journals consists in a critical examination of papers seeking scientific validation of their quality for national and international dissemination, thus contributing to the development of the field of science in question. Therefore, the work of peer reviewers and editors in scientific journals requires systematic comprehensive training, responsibility, honesty and a high level of altruism, among other values, for they are in charge of passing objective and educational judgment on the papers evaluated, a task they often perform after fulfilling their occupational obligations. Perfecting peer reviewing is crucial to improve the performance of the journal and raise its quality. This is the reason why it was decided to develop the present guide to train reviewers of the Cuban Journal of Dentistry in the management of the Open Journal System during the process of scientific paper review(AU)

Scientific papers look for the information transference and construction of high quality knowledge. Forensic Dentistry, although the wide field of professional activity, involves several themes related to Law that often makes it difficult to publish in international scientific journals. This study aimed to map the national and international scientific journals with publications in Forensic Dentistry, as well as to expose the difficulties to publish papers in high impact factor journals. It was accessed the Sucupira Platform (Brazil) and selected Dentistry as an evaluation area to get the classification file. All journals that presented issues related to Forensic Dentistry were recorded in two tables with the number of papers published related to the area in each of them. 191 journals were found, 75 national and 116 international. The national publications showed few productions in high impact factor journals, while the international ones presented a larger quantity, but still a minority within the total production. With this study, it was possible to compare the Qualis classification between national and international journals, highlighting the distance between such classifications and exposing the difficulty of publication in journals that present high competitiveness and internationality.

RESUMEN

This study seeks to outline the main characteristics of the texts on oral health that appeared in the printed media in the State of Espírito Santo from 2004 to 2009, in order to analyze and compare the issues, approaches and journalistic relevance related to the theme prioritized in A Tribuna and A Gazeta newspapers. Exploratory documentary research was conducted, based on quantitative content analysis of the material, which established that the issues included ranged from information about oral health policies, community service and prevention of oral health diseases, to the "aesthetic tendencies" of the smile. It also covered the dissemination of new technologies and dental specialties and there was a predominance of even-numbered pages, fewer first page texts and full-page coverage. This implies a moderate appreciation of these issues, different editorial projects, plus the difference in target audience that determined the journalistic standard and the predominance of specialized sources. Despite the oral health articles not revealing journalistic "scoops", they can be reworked using conscious journalistic techniques, in order to elicit the extraordinary from the ordinary, giving rise to texts of social relevance in both newspapers.
