RESUMEN
This case report describes an aneurysmal bone cyst in the maxilla of a young dog. It describes the clinical presentation, diagnostics, management, and successful outcome of this highly unusual case. Bone cysts are described as benign, cavitated lesions within bone that are lined by reactive tissues. There is no epithelial lining in the lesions. Bone cysts usually contain hemorrhage or serosanguinous fluid. They usually appear in the long bones, and present as a swelling with or without pain.

CASE DESCRIPTION: 3 horses were referred for treatment of subchondral cystic lesions of 1 or both medial femoral condyles. CLINICAL FINDINGS: All horses had clinically apparent lameness confirmed to be due to a radiographically evident subchondral cystic lesion of the medial femoral condyle with a large articular component (> 15 mm) and shallow subchondral depth (< 10 mm). Arthroscopic assessment of affected cartilage revealed undulating cartilage with a relatively smooth surface and extensive residual perimeter attachment. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: Resorbable polydioxanone pins were used arthroscopically to reattach the cartilage overlying the subchondral cystic lesions. A biologic graft (bone marrow aspirate concentrate or allogeneic chondrocytes) was injected into the depths of the cystic cavity following cartilage reattachment. Follow-up examination confirmed radiographic resolution of the lesion and elimination of clinical signs within the treated femorotibial joint. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Lesions with a large area of affected articular cartilage have been associated with a decreased rate of return to athletic function following arthroscopic debridement, likely secondary to the loss of subchondral architecture and the production of imperfect fibrocartilage repair. Salvage of the affected cartilage in a select population of horses with progressively expanding but shallow subchondral cystic lesions of the medial femoral condyle is possible and may improve radiographic and clinical outcome.

Maxillary bone epithelial cyst is rare in dogs. A 5-year-old, spayed female miniature schnauzer developed a swelling below the nasal canthus of left eye. Plain radiograph demonstrated a 1.5 cm diameter of radiolucent lesion on the maxillary bone anteroventral to the eye, and contrast dacryocystorhinography confirmed an obstructed nasolarcrimal duct. The swelling showed poor response to antibiotic treatment but responded well to oral prednisolone. Exploratory surgery revealed a cyst-like structure filled with brown serous fluid. Histopathological examination of the removed cyst revealed a double cuboidal epithelial cyst. The dog recovered rapidly after surgery, and the swelling had not recurred for a 36-month follow-up. It is the first case of periorbital bone epithelial cyst reported in an adult miniature schnauzer.

The results of surgical treatment of 10 subchondral bone cysts, all located in the medial femoral condyle, are presented. A cancellous bone graft was used in nine cases and a two component acrylic bone cement was used in the case of an extremely large cyst. Eight out of the 10 cases made a satisfactory clinical recovery.

A 1-year-old Appaloosa stallion had a mass on the right rostral hemimandible. The mass was firm, did not cause signs of pain, and was identified as a bone cyst by radiography and biopsy. Surgical correction included curettage of the cystic cavity and grafting the defect with both cortical and cancellous bone. By 5 months, the cystic cavity was ossifying; continued remodeling with an increase in bone density was apparent 22 months after surgery.

A 3-year-old Holstein bull was examined because of a mass involving the cranial portion of the right hemimandible and the oral cavity. The mass had been observed 2 weeks earlier. The bull had lost weight throughout the 45 days before admission, and was anorectic at the time of admission. An aneurysmal bone cyst of the mandible was diagnosed.

To describe the treatment of a subchondral bone cyst in the proximal phalanx with parathyroid hormone peptide-enriched fibrin hydrogel in a warmblood filly. The cyst was localized with computer-assisted orthopaedic surgery, then curetted and finally filled with parathyroid hormone fragment peptide 1-34 (PTH(1-34)) covalently attached to a fibrin hydrogel. The cyst healed quickly without any complications. This result supports the hypothesis that PTH(1-34) delivered locally in a fibrin hydrogel may improve the postoperative prognosis of surgical management of subchondral bone cysts in horses. Subchondral bone cysts are fairly common in horses. Especially in older horses, the prognosis is poor, even after surgical curettage. Therefore, different management protocols have been investigated in conjunction with surgical curettage to improve prognosis. Locally delivered PTH(1-34) seems to be a new method in the treatment of subchondral bone cysts.
