ABSTRACT

Mud nests built by swallows (Hirundinidae) and phoebes (Sayornis) are stable granular piles attached to cliffs, walls, or ceilings. Although these birds have been observed to mix saliva with incohesive mud granules, how such biopolymer solutions provide the nest with sufficient strength to support the weight of the residents as well as its own remains elusive. Here, we elucidate the mechanism of strong granular cohesion by the viscoelastic paste of bird saliva through a combination of theoretical analysis and experimental measurements in both natural and artificial nests. Our mathematical model considering the mechanics of mud nest construction allows us to explain the biological observation that all mud-nesting bird species should be lightweight.

ABSTRACT

Some birds exhibit a maxillary overhang, in which the tip of the upper beak projects beyond the lower mandible and may curve downward. The overhang is thought to help control ectoparasites on the feathers. Little is known about the extent to which the maxillary overhang varies spatially or temporally within populations of the same species. The colonial cliff swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) has relatively recently shifted to almost exclusive use of artificial structures such as bridges and highway culverts for nesting and consequently has been exposed to higher levels of parasitism than on its ancestral cliff nesting sites. We examined whether increased ectoparasitism may have favored recent changes in the extent of the maxillary overhang. Using a specimen collection of cliff swallows from western Nebraska, USA, spanning 40 years and field data on live birds, we found that the extent of the maxillary overhang increased across years in a nonlinear way, peaking in the late 2000's, and varied inversely with cliff swallow colony size for unknown reasons. The number of fleas on nestling cliff swallows declined in general over this period. Those birds with perceptible overhangs had fewer swallow bugs on the outside of their nest, but they did not have higher nesting success than birds with no overhangs. The intraspecific variation in the maxillary overhang in cliff swallows was partly consistent with it having a functional role in combatting ectoparasites. The temporal increase in the extent of the overhang may be a response by cliff swallows to their relatively recent increased exposure to parasitism. Our results demonstrate that this avian morphological trait can change rapidly over time.

ABSTRACT

This study examines the abundance and types of microplastic (MP) content in the digestive system of different bird species to help us better understand MP transfer to birds from their environments. The lower GI tracts of six bird species (Tree Swallow (Tachycineta bicolor), Ovenbird (Seiurus aurocapilla), Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis), Hermit Thrush (Catharus guttatus), Tennessee Warbler (Leiothlypis peregrine), White-throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis)) were collected for MP analysis. Tree Swallows were collected from nine locations along three drainages in the Milwaukee area and at a remote lake in Wisconsin, USA and consisted of nestlings not yet fledged. The five other bird species were adult migratory bird fatalities from window strikes at the Loyola University Chicago's Lake Shore Campus. Results of plastic analysis showed that the lower GI tracts of all bird species contained different types of MPs (i.e., fibers, fragment, beads). Fiber was the most dominant, followed by fragment and beads. Microplastics were polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, nylon, and polyvinyl base materials. There was no statistically significant difference in the site average MP concentration for nestling Tree Swallows or in the species average concentration for adult migratory birds. However, except for Ovenbird, species of adult migratory birds had a species average MP concentration (20.1) that was statistically higher than the site-average MP concentration for Tree Swallow nestlings (5.9). The presence of MPs in the lower GI tracts of unfledged swallows could suggest that MPs had been transferred to the birds from the environment via their diet, such as flying insects-the food source of the birds. Further study should be conducted to investigate the potential transfer of MPs from aquatic insects to birds.

ABSTRACT

Limited research has been conducted on microplastics in terrestrial ecosystems and biota, despite being some of the most ubiquitous environmental pollutants. We investigated the presence of microplastics (over 125 µm) in tree swallow (Tachicyneta bicolor) chicks (10 d. o.), an aerial insectivore whose diet involves terrestrial and/or freshwater sources. Swallows nested immediately downstream (300 m) of the discharge pipe of a large, urban wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) or at a rural conservation area (40 km apart). Anthropogenic microparticles (including microplastics) were identified in nearly all WWTP chicks (90%; N = 20) and reference chicks (83%; N = 20). All microparticles were fibers (100%) in the gastro-intestinal (GI) tracts of WWTP nestlings, whereas unexpectedly, they were more diverse in the GI tracts of reference chicks, with ~15% characterized as pre-production plastic pellets. The fecal sacs of most nestlings (90%) contained microparticles, and all were characterized as fibers suggesting their excretion by tree swallows. Compared to WWTP chicks, the reference chicks had more microparticles in their fecal sacs and larger particles (length, width) in their GI tracts, likely reflecting the more aquatic-based diet of the reference chicks fed insects caught adjacent to the nearby dam, compared to the more terrestrial-based diet of the WWTP chicks. The numbers of microparticles were not correlated between GI tracts and fecal sacs, nor with the chicks' condition or size (weight, organs, feathers). We recommend sampling macroinvertebrate prey to permit stronger conclusions regarding WWTPs as possible sources of microplastics for swallows, and to determine if such macroinvertebrates may be a non-lethal method to characterize microparticle diversity ingested by birds as presently identified in chicks' GI tracts. We conclude that sampling fecal sacs only, while not indicative of the diversity of microplastics ingested by terrestrial passerines (e.g., tree swallows), is useful for determining their exposure to microparticles.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The number of swallows needed per single ingestion of food is an important index when assisting a patient with dysphagia in eating. While providing meal assistance, the caregiver may assume that one ingestion is completed with one swallow and then may administer the next ingestion even if the individual's mouth still has remaining food from the previous ingestions, increasing the risk for aspiration and choking. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this pilot study was to clarify the differences in foods ingested and swallowed because of influencing factors such as age and gender among healthy adults. METHODS: The study enrolled 110 healthy adults (47.4 ± 15.8 years; 57 males, 53 females). The numbers of ingestions and swallows were counted and evaluated by food type (pilaf, 100 g; yogurt 80 g; and sponge cake, 35 g) and participant age and sex and analyzed by least-squares multiple regression analysis. RESULTS: The mean numbers of ingestion/swallows were pilaf, 12.5 ± 3.2/13.4 ± 4.2; yogurt, 8.8 ± 2.1/10.8 ± 2.1; and sponge cake, 5.8 ± 2.1/7.0 ± 2.1. The mean number of ingestions and swallows for all foods were higher for female participants compared with male participants. Statistical analysis identified sex as a significant influencing factor for the number of ingestion for all foods. For the number of swallows, the significant influencing factors were sex for sponge cake and age for pilaf and yogurt. CONCLUSION: For the test foods of different textures, sex and age were significant influencing factors for the numbers of ingestions and swallows. Further research is needed to elucidate the problem areas in this pilot study.

In 1997 and 1998 we weighed nestling tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) and measured selected body components at two colonies: Acadia National Park on Mt. Desert Island, and at Orono, ME. We used differences in mean growth variables among individual nestlings to evaluate differences between colonies, years, and amount of total mercury (THg) in carcasses and methyl mercury (MeHg) in feathers. We marked nestlings on the day hatched and measured body components every day in 1997 and every other day in 1998 until nestlings fledged. We calculated linear growth rates and asymptotic means as appropriate. In 1998, linear growth rate of weight was higher at Acadia than at Orono, but not different in 1997. We detected no mean differences in asymptotic mean weight of nestlings between colonies or years. In 1997, mean linear growth rates of the wing (chord), tail, tarsus, and mandible were higher at Acadia than at Orono. The amount of MeHg in feathers was associated with a lower linear growth rate of weight during early age (2-10 days), but asymptotic mean weight during days 11-16 was not different. No effect on linear growth of tail feathers or wing was associated with the amount of MeHg in feathers or THg in carcasses. Fledgling tree swallows that survive to migrate, however, will leave Maine with substantial concentrations of Hg in their tissues.
