STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Despite the increasing number of publications on applying artificial intelligence (AI) in the dental field, clarity regarding the performance of different approaches for nasoalveolar molding (NAM) planning and designing is lacking. Additionally, the overall robustness of the evidence in this field remains uncertain. PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the role of AI in automating the prediction of anatomic landmarks and the design of NAM appliances. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in major databases up to April 2024 without language restrictions. Studies applying AI algorithms for NAM landmark detection or appliance design were included. Data on study characteristics, AI methods, outcomes, and limitations were extracted. RESULTS: Six studies met the eligibility criteria. AI algorithms demonstrated high accuracy in automatically detecting landmarks and designing NAM appliances. Approaches ranged from fully automated to semi-automated workflows. Most studies reported significant time savings compared with manual methods. CONCLUSIONS: AI applications in NAM demonstrate substantial potential in improving workflow design, as demonstrated by the high accuracy reported in various studies. The incorporation of AI in NAM planning leads to a significant reduction in treatment appointment times when compared with conventional manual methods, thereby potentially decreasing the overall duration of treatment. Nevertheless, additional research is required to foster better collaboration between dental professionals and AI experts, ultimately facilitating more efficient clinical integration.

BACKGROUND: Various methods can be used for creating zirconia dental restorations, including 3-dimensional (3D) printing and computer-aided design/ computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) milling. The fused deposition modeling (FDM) printing method for zirconia presents numerous advantages, albeit research on the mechanical properties of these materials and resultant restorations remains scarce. Such developments are undeniably intriguing and warrant further investigation. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the impact of the sintering firing cycle (Conventional vs. Speed sintering) on the flexural strength, flexural modulus, and Vickers Microhardness of milled vs. FDM printed zirconia. METHODS: A total of 60 bars (2 × 5 × 27 mm) were fabricated for flexural strength testing, along with 40 discs (12 × 1.5 mm) for Vickers microhardness testing. Half of the specimens underwent conventional sintering, while the other half underwent a speed sintering cycle. The flexural strength and modulus were determined by a three-point bending test in a universal testing machine. The microhardness of the specimens was evaluated using a Vickers microhardness tester. Statistical analysis was performed using a two-way ANOVA test with a post-hoc Tukey test (p < 0.05). RESULTS: CAD/CAM milled zirconia had significantly higher flexural strength and modulus than FDM-printed zirconia. The sintering process did not significantly affect the flexural strength or modulus of milled or FDM-printed zirconia. The milled speed sintering group had significantly higher values in the Vickers microhardness test compared to the other groups. CONCLUSIONS: The mechanical properties of FDM-printed zirconia specimens were not found to be comparable to those of milled zirconia. Speed sintering cycle may produce milled zirconia restorations with similar flexural strength and modulus to conventional sintering, and even higher Vickers Microhardness values.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an ever-growing threat to modern medicine and, according to the latest reports, it causes nearly twice as many deaths globally as AIDS or malaria. Elucidating reservoirs and dissemination routes of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) are essential in fighting AMR. Human commensals represent an important reservoir, which is underexplored for the oral microbiota. Here, we set out to investigate the resistome and phenotypic resistance of oral biofilm microbiota from 179 orally healthy (H), caries active (C), and periodontally diseased (P) individuals (TRN: DRKS00013119, Registration date: 22.10.2022). The samples were analysed using shotgun metagenomic sequencing combined, for the first time, with culture technique. A selection of 997 isolates was tested for resistance to relevant antibiotics. RESULTS: The shotgun metagenomics sequencing resulted in 2,069,295,923 reads classified into 4856 species-level OTUs. PERMANOVA analysis of beta-diversity revealed significant differences between the groups regarding their microbiota composition and their ARG profile. The samples were clustered into three ecotypes based on their microbial composition. The bacterial composition of H and C samples greatly overlapped and was based on ecotypes 1 and 2 whereas ecotype 3 was only detected in periodontitis. We found 64 ARGs conveying resistance to 36 antibiotics, particularly to tetracycline, macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin, and beta-lactam antibiotics, and a correspondingly high prevalence of phenotypic resistance. Based on the microbiota composition, these ARGs cluster in different resistotypes, and a higher prevalence is found in healthy and caries active than in periodontally diseased individuals. There was a significant association between the resistotypes and the ecotypes. Although numerous associations were found between specific antibiotic resistance and bacterial taxa, only a few taxa showed matching associations with both genotypic and phenotypic analyses. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings show the importance of the oral microbiota from different niches within the oral cavity as a reservoir for antibiotic resistance. Additionally, the present study showed the need for using more than one method to reveal antibiotic resistance within the total oral biofilm, as a clear mismatch between the shotgun metagenomics method and the phenotypic resistance characterization was shown.

BACKGROUND: Several studies evaluated the effect of bariatric surgery on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) but findings have been inconsistent. The aim of this study was to conduct an updated systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the effect of bariatric surgery on OSA. METHODS: The databases for PubMed, CENTRAL, and Scopus were searched up to the 1st of December, 2021. Studies were included if they were cohort or case-control in design, included patients with diagnosis of OSA, the patients underwent any bariatric surgery, and the study performed postoperative polysomnography. RESULTS: The total number of the included patients was 2310 patients with OSA from 32 studies. Our analysis showed that bariatric surgery was associated with significant reduction in BMI (WMD = - 11.9, 95%CI: - 13.4, - 10.4), apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) (WMD = - 19.3, 95%CI: - 23.9, - 14.6), and respiratory disturbance index (RDI) (WMD = - 33.9, 95%CI: - 42.1, - 25.7). The rate of OSA remission after the surgery was 65% (95%CI: 0.54, 0.76). CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that bariatric surgeries are effective in reducing obesity among patients with OSA in addition to OSA severity measures. However, the low rate of OSA remission suggests that the main etiology of OSA is not only obesity but also includes other important variables such as the anatomy of the jaw.

BACKGROUND: To compare the efficiency of endodontic rotary and reciprocating systems in removing calcium silicate-sealer based fillings and to investigate the impact of passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) on their efficiency. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 160 root-canals were instrumented, filled with gutta-percha and calcium silicate based-sealer and divided into 10 equal groups. Five groups in which the reciprocating systems (WaveOne-Gold, Reciproc-Blue and R-Motion) and rotary systems (Fanta-AF-One and Tango-Endo) were used to remove root-canals' fillings. In the other five groups the fillings were removed by the same systems then additionally with PUI. The times to complete retreatments procedures were recorded. Micro-computed tomography's analysis of the root-canals fillings' volume before and after retreatments was used to determine the remaining filling materials (RFMs) volumes. RESULTS: The RFMs after using rotary systems (10.1%) was greater than after using reciprocating systems (3.8%) (P < 0.001). The RFMs after using WOG (2%) and RB systems (2.6%) were less than those in the RM (6.8%), TE (9.5%) and FAFO (10.7%) systems [P < 0.05]. The times required to remove the filling materials using the TE (3.7 min), FAFO (4.1 min) and RM (4.1 min) systems were shorter than those required by the RB (5.4 min) and WOG (4.9 min) systems [P < 0.05]. Using PUI resulted in less RFMs (1.44%) when compared to using only rotary or reciprocating systems (6.27%) [P < 0.001]. CONCLUSIONS: Endodontic reciprocation systems were more effective, but needed longer times than rotary systems in removing calcium silicate based- sealers fillings. The PUI significantly improved removal of the root-canals' filling materials. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Reciprocating systems and PUI are recommended whenever root-canals retreatment is considered regardless of using calcium silicate-based sealers.

Background and Objectives: Periodontitis is a chronic multifactorial inflammatory infectious disease marked by continuous degradation of teeth and surrounding parts. One of the most important periodontal pathogens is P. intermedia, and with its interpain A proteinase, it leads to an increase in lethal infection. Materials and Methods: The current study was designed to create a multi-epitope vaccine using an immunoinformatics method that targets the interpain A of P. intermedia. For the development of vaccines, P. intermedia peptides InpA were found appropriate. To create a multi-epitope vaccination design, interpain A, B, and T-cell epitopes were found and assessed depending on the essential variables. The vaccine construct was evaluated based on its stability, antigenicity, and allergenicity. Results: The vaccine construct reached a more significant population and was able to bind to both the binding epitopes of major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-I and MHC-II. Through the C3 receptor complex route, P. intermedia InpA promotes an immunological subunit. Utilizing InpA-C3 and vaccination epitopes as the receptor and ligand, the molecular docking and dynamics were performed using the ClusPro 2.0 server. Conclusion: The developed vaccine had shown good antigenicity, solubility, and stability. Molecular docking indicated the vaccine's 3D structure interacts strongly with the complement C3. The current study describes the design for vaccine, and steady interaction with the C3 immunological receptor to induce a good memory and an adaptive immune response against Interpain A of P. intermedia.

Background and Aim: To evaluate knowledge, attitude, and information sources about child abuse and neglect (CAN) among dentists in Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh state, India. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was carried out of dentist working in government and private hospitals in the Varanasi district, Uttar Pradesh State, India (n = 674). The structured questionnaire was sent through electronic mail that contained the consent form, instructions for filling, and returning the questionnaire. The data obtained were systematically compiled and the Chi-square test was applied to test the association. The significance level of P ≤ 0.05 was applied. Results: A maximum number of dental practitioners from the government (81.97%) and private sector (85.98%) were aware of the child protection law. A significant number of government and private dental practitioners were satisfied with their knowledge (p = 0.0092); however, 83.79% suggested that the continuing education programs/courses were important tool to update their knowledge. The girl child was maximum sufferer (p = 0.0056) of CAN. Only 14.08% of practitioners acted on the suspected cases, and a statistical significant relation was observed between the government and private dental practitioners for not taking any action on child abuse and neglect (p = 0.0010). Conclusions: Data from this study may provide a useful contribution to the current limited knowledge about the familiarity of dental practitioners with child maltreatment and their skills to recognize and manage CAN cases in their practice. The majority of dental practitioners knew about the child protection law in India, but they were reluctant to report such cases due to the fear of anger from the parents and family of the child. Continuing education programs/courses were the most preferred method for increasing the knowledge regarding CAN. They should report the CAN cases to local legislators and health authorities so to prevent child abuse and neglect from ever occurring.

Garlic's main bioactive organosulfur component, diallyl trisulfide (DATS), has been widely investigated in cancer models. However, DATS is not suitable for clinical use due to its low solubility. The current study seeks to improve DATS bioavailability and assess its chemopreventive and chemosensitizing properties in an AOM-induced colorectal cancer model. The polyethylene glycol coated Distearoylphosphatidylcholine/Cholesterol (DSPC/Chol) comprising DATS-loaded DATSL and doxorubicin (DOXO)-encapsulated DOXL liposomes was prepared and characterized. The changes in the sensitivity of DATS and DOXO by DATSL and DOXL were evaluated in RKO and HT-29 colon cancer cells. The synergistic effect of DATSL and DOXL was studied by cell proliferation assay in the combinations of IC10, IC25, and IC35 of DATSL with the IC10 of DOXL. AOM, DATSL, and DOXL were administered to different groups of mice for a period of 21 weeks. The data exhibited ~93% and ~46% entrapment efficiency of DATSL and DOXL, respectively. The size of sham liposomes was 110.5 nm, whereas DATSL and DOXL were 135.5 nm and 169 nm, respectively. DATSL and DOXL exhibited significant sensitivity in the cell proliferation experiment, lowering their IC50 doses by more than 8- and 14-fold, respectively. However, the DATSL IC10, IC25, and IC35 showed escalating chemosensitivity, and treated the cells in combination with DOXL IC10. Analysis of histopathological, cancer marker enzymes, and antioxidant enzymes revealed that the high dose of DATSL pretreatment and DOXL chemotherapy is highly effective in inhibiting AOM-induced colon cancer promotion. The combination of DATSL and DOXL indicated promise as a colorectal cancer treatment in this study. Intermolecular interactions of DATS and DOXO against numerous cancer targets by molecular docking indicated MMP-9 as the most favourable target for DATS exhibiting binding energy of -4.6 kcal/mol. So far, this is the first research to demonstrate the chemopreventive as well as chemosensitizing potential of DATSL in an animal model of colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: There have been no reports on the impact of different reciprocating angles on retreatment performance of reciprocating files. This ex-vivo study compared the efficiency of three reciprocating systems in removing MTA-type sealer-based filling materials and investigated the influence of different reciprocating angles on their retreatment ability. METHODS: 140 root-canals were instrumented to a 35 apical size and filled with an MTA-type sealer and gutta-percha cones. Samples were scanned by micro-computed-tomography and the root-canals fillings volumes were measured. Samples were divided into 7 groups according to the reciprocating angles at which the WaveOne-Gold (WOG), Reciproc-Blue (RB) and R-Motion (RM) systems were reciprocated to remove the root-canals' fillings. The WOG-150/30, WOG-90/30, RB-150/30, RB-90/30, RM-150/30 and RM-90/30 groups in which the systems were reciprocated at 150/30 and 90/30 (counterclockwise/clockwise) angles. In the RB-270/30 group the RB system was reciprocated at 270/30 angles. Samples were re-scanned and the remaining filling materials' (RFMs) volumes were measured. The percentage of the RFMs volume and its mean value for each group were calculated and data were statistically analysed at 0.05 significance level. RESULTS: The WOG system resulted in less RFMs (2.24%) when reciprocated at 90/30 angles compared to that resulted from the 150/30 angles (4.96%) [P = 0.002]. The RB system reciprocated at 90/30 angles resulted in less RFMs (2.67%) compared to that resulted from the 270/30 angles (6.64%) [P = 0.001]. The RFMs after using RM system reciprocated at 90/30 (6.02%) and 150/30 (7.61%) were greater than those of WOG (2.24 and 4.96%) and RB (2.67 and 4.34%) reciprocated at the same angles (P < 0.05). The longest time required to remove the filling materials was recorded with the RB-270/30 group (6.06 min) [P = 0.00]. The times required when the WOG, RB and RM files reciprocated at 90/30 angles (3.59, 3 and 3.05 mins, respectively) were shorter than those when files were reciprocated at 150/30 angles (5.25, 4.98 and 3.67 min, respectively) [P < 0.05]. CONCLUSIONS: The WOG and RB systems removed more MTA-type sealer-based root-canals fillings than the RM system. Lower counterclockwise reciprocating angles improve the retreatment ability of reciprocating systems, especially the WOG system and can reduce the time required for retreatment procedures.

PURPOSE: Graduating confident students who are able to flourish and develop in their future careers is an importance outcome of the dental education. This study aims to evaluate self-perceived level of confidence of fifth-year dental students in different restorative-related tasks and the relationship between their clinical training and its corresponding confidence. METHODS: Fifth-year graduate dental students (n = 202) were asked to fill a questionnaire that rated their level of confidence in different clinical restorative dentistry tasks. Additionally, they were asked about the number of times they performed tasks prior to attempting the equivalent competency and in which sub-specialty they felt the most confident. RESULTS: Completed responses were received from 120 students giving a response rate of 59%. Students felt the most prepared and confident in direct restorations and simple endodontic treatment, and they seemed less confident in indirect restorations and complex endodontic treatment. Regarding the steps of indirect restorations, students expressed least confidence in crown preparation compared to impression making and try-in procedures (P < .05). Students rated their confidence highest in operative dentistry, followed by endodontics and lastly fixed prosthodontics. CONCLUSION: The results highlight the areas in which students exhibit the least confidence. Enhancement of student clinical skills and directed exposure is necessary to raise the level of perceived confidence which will reflect positively on their current and future professional performance.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the perceived educational and health risks associated with the COVID-19 pandemic amongst dental students and educators. METHODS: A 17-item electronic survey was sent to 496 undergraduate dental students and 53 clinical faculty members who attended clinical sessions during the outbreak period. The survey explored various aspects related to primary sources and prevention of disease exposure, dental management of suspected cases, impact of COVID-19 on students' clinical performance and effects of suspension of educational activities on academic performance and clinical competence. RESULTS: The response rate of the students' was 60.7% (n = 301). The majority of students reported that performing clinical work during the outbreak posed significant health concerns, resulted in a significant stress and negatively affected their clinical performance. The majority of students believed that aerosols generated during dental procedures are the major source for disease exposure and universal protective equipment is not effective for prevention. The decision to suspend teaching activities was supported by 89% of the students. Opinions were divided regarding the impact of the suspension on the academic performance and clinical competence. Educational videos were the most preferred form of distance education. The response rate of faculty members was 60.4% (n = 32). Responses of faculty members were similar to students, though fewer concerns were reported regarding the risk of disease transmission. All respondents agreed that extra-precautionary measures are required to ensure optimum protection against disease exposure. CONCLUSIONS: The recent COVID-19 outbreak has adversely affected various elements of dental education. High levels of major health risk perception were noted amongst students and educators. The interruption to academic and clinical activities may lead to an inevitable skill deficit within the new generation of dental graduates. Educators are under significant pressure to accommodate abrupt changes in teaching methods, find solutions to mitigate skill deficit and ensure safe clinical practice once clinical activities are resumed.

BACKGROUND: Implementation of mandibular advancement splint (MAS) therapy as first-line treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is hindered by inter-individual variability of treatment outcomes and lack of robust patient selection methods. Optimal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) requirement provides an estimate of airway collapsibility severity, and high CPAP requirements predict MAS therapy failure in retrospective studies. Thus, understanding the effects of mandibular advancement on optimal CPAP requirements may enhance optimisation of patient selection for MAS therapy. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine dose-dependent effects of mandibular advancement on optimal CPAP requirements in OSA. METHODS: Prior to MAS therapy initiation, participants with OSA (apnoea-hypopnea index (AHI) > 10 events/h) underwent a research polysomnogram in which a remotely controlled mandibular positioner (RCMP) was used to determine dose-response effects of varying mandibular advancement positions (0% 'habitual bite' and 25, 50, 75 and 100% of maximum mandibular advancement, in random order) on optimal CPAP requirements. A separate polysomnography determined treatment outcome. Data are presented as mean ± SD or median (1st-3rd quartiles). RESULTS: Seventeen participants (age = 47 ± 9 years, body mass index = 26 kg/m2 (23-27), apnoea-hypopnea index = 18 events/h (14-44) and minimal oxygen saturation = 84 ± 7%) were studied. Optimal CPAP requirements were reduced with mandibular advancement in a dose-dependent manner (8.9 ± 2.4 vs. 7.9 ± 2.8, 6.4 ± 1.8, 5.7 ± 1.9 and 4.9 ± 1.8 cmH2O; respectively, p < 0.0001). Compared with non-responders, responders to MAS therapy had lower AHI, lower arousal index and greater MinSaO2 at baseline. Optimal CPAP requirements at 0% mandibular advancement (or other positions) were not different between groups. CONCLUSIONS: Increasing mandibular advancement lowers optimal CPAP requirements in a dose-dependent manner. This supports prior work indicating a beneficial effect of MAS on upper airway collapsibility.

Background: Bioactive oils of natural origin have gained huge interests from health care professionals and patients. Objective: To design a bioactive self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system (Bio-SNEDDS) comprising curcumin (CUR) and piperine (PP) by incorporating bioactive natural oils in the formulation. Methods: The self-emulsifying properties of apricot, avocado, black seed and Zanthoxylum rhetsa seed oils were screened within various SNEDDS formulations. Each liquid SNEDDS formulation was loaded with both CUR and PP. The optimal liquid SNEDDS were solidified using Aeroperl® and Neusilin® at 1:1 w/w ratio. Liquid and solid SNEDDS were characterized by droplet size analysis, equilibrium solubility, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. In-vitro dissolution studies were performed to evaluate the efficiency of CUR and PP release from solid Bio-SNEDDS. Results: The liquid SNEDDS comprised of black seed oil exhibited excellent self-emulsification performance, low droplet size along with transparent appearance. The inclusion of the cosolvent Transcutol P improved the solubilization capacity of both CUR and PP. The liquid SNEDDS were efficiently solidified using the two adsorbents and presented the drugs within amorphous state. In particular, SNEDDS comprised of black seed oil/Imwitor988/Transcutol P/Cremophor RH40 (20/20/10/50) and when solidified with Neusilin showed enhanced CUR and PP release (up to 60% and 77%, respectively). In addition, this formulation efficiently delivers the highly bioactive black seed oil to the patient. Conclusions: The optimized Bio-SNEDDS comprising black seed oil showed outstanding self-emulsification characteristics along with enhanced CUR/PP dissolution upon solidification.

RESUMO

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Drug-coated balloons (DEB) and drug-eluting stents (DES) emerged as a tool to aid in lowering the rates of neointimal hyperplasia and target lesion restenosis following endovascular peripheral arterial disease (PAD) interventions. RECENT FINDINGS: Although the initial trials comparing these devices with non-drug balloons and stents showed favorable results, more recent data raised concerns regarding the mid to long-term safety of these devices. In this review, we will discuss the evolution of endovascular therapy for PAD, with highlights regarding the recent debates on the long-term safety of the drug-coated devices for treatment of PAD.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the complications associated with the use of nickel titanium rotary instruments (NiTi-RIs) for root canal treatments (RCTs), in Saudi Arabia dental practice, and to explore the influencing factors. METHODS: After obtaining an ethical approval, two pilot studies were conducted to formulate the final questionnaire. The sample size was measured taking into consideration 60% expected response rates and confidence level of 99.9%. The questionnaire was emailed to 600 general dentists (GDs) randomly selected from the dental register and all of the endodontists (175). The email's introduction clarified objectives of the study and guaranteed that all of the collected information would remain confidential. A reminder was sent after 10 weeks. The data were collected and analyzed using the chi-squared test at a 0.05 significance level. RESULTS: With a 51% overall response rate, 71.9% off the respondents used NiTi-RIs. The majority (83.1%) experienced complications while using NiTi-RIs; with the instruments' fracture being significantly the most common complication (52.7%) (p < 0.001). The majority (87.7%) experienced NiTi-RIs' fracture at least once; with more endodontists (94.3%) than GDs (83.3%) (p < 0.001). The greater the number of weekly performed RCTs and participants' experiences, the more NiTi-RIs fractures and the greater the number of fracture incidents (p < 0.001). While 60% of those who performed 1-3 RCTs per week experienced NiTi-RIs fractures, 100% of those who performed more than 12 RCTs per week did so. The highest percentage of those who experienced more than 10 fractured NiTi-RIs (60%) was within the group who performed more than 12 RCTs per week. Although fracture incidents decreased with a smaller number of reuses, there was no significant correlation between the number of fractured instruments and NiTi-RIs discard strategy (p ≥ 0.05). CONCLUSION: Fracture incidence was the most common complication while using NiTi-RIs, regardless of the clinicians' experiences and skills. While the single use may reduce NiTi-RIs fractures, to some extent, the greater number of RCTs performed per week was the most influential factor.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of human papilloma virus (HPV)-related oral cancer has recently increased worldwide. The role of dentists is of prime importance in the early detection of oral cancer which would result in a favourable outcome for the patients. The aim of the current study was to assess the knowledge, awareness and attitudes of dental students, interns and postgraduate maxillofacial residents at the University of Jordan (UJ) to different aspects of oral cancer, particularly those related to HPV. METHODS: A paper-based survey was conducted at UJ among all pre-clinical dental students (pre-clinical group), clinical dental students, interns and postgraduate maxillofacial residents (clinical group). The survey included five sections comprising 29 items. The sections included questions investigating oral cancer knowledge, oral cancer screening, HPV knowledge and the ability to discuss personal topics with patients. RESULTS: A total of 376 respondents out of 1052 potential participants completed at least one item of the survey (study coverage of 35.7%). Among the study participants, the pre-clinical group represented 41.2% (n = 155) and the clinical group represented 58.8% (n = 221). The majority of participants in the clinical group showed better knowledge on oral cancer potential anatomic sites, clinical presentation and possible risk factors compared to the pre-clinical group. Most participants in the clinical group (n = 195, 88.2%) correctly identified HPV as a risk factor for oral cancer development. The majority of participants in the clinical group displayed suitable attitude towards oral cancer screening despite their desire for a reliable screening device and additional training in oral cancer screening. A number of limitations in basic knowledge about HPV was noticed among participants in the clinical group particularly related to unawareness of the vaccine availability. The majority of participants in the clinical group displayed hesitancy in discussing personal topics with the patients, including the history of previous sexually transmitted infections and sexual abuse. CONCLUSIONS: Gaps in knowledge regarding HPV-related oral cancer has been detected which necessitate intervention measures including curricular changes, training workshops and awareness campaigns.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the quality of the scientific/clinical information in dentistry delivered by videos hosted by a popular video-sharing website. METHODS: The gingival recession condition was used as a model and YouTube™ as the video hosting service. A systematic observation of videos containing information on gingival recession was conducted. Videos were analysed to evaluate (i) the scientific reliability and quality of the information using Global Quality Scale (GQS) and DISCREN criteria; and (ii) the understandability of this information using a tailor-made custom comprehensiveness index (CI). RESULTS: One hundred and eighty videos were identified. Videos dealing with surgical procedures were not included in the present review. After selection, 41 videos were analysed. The mean GQS was 2.34 on a 0-5 scale, and 25 (61%) videos showed clear aims according to DISCREN criteria. Misleading content was observed in eight videos (19.5%). The scientific sources of information were unclear in 26 (63.4%) videos. All videos failed to give additional references for supplemental information. Only three videos (7%) provided basic information on aetiology, clinical presentations and management of gingival recession. Based on 0-2 CI scores, three, nine and 29 videos had a score of 2, 1 and 0, respectively. CONCLUSION: The present model indicates that social media websites aiming to provide health information should be carefully accounted, especially when dealing with dentistry. It also suggests professional involvement to improve the quality of the delivered information.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed at investigating dental clinicians' preferences on management of necrotic pulp with acute apical abscess (NPAAA) cases. METHODS: Following an ethical approval and two pilot studies, an electronic survey was emailed to 400 general dental practitioners (GDPs) and 56 endodontists. The email explained the study's methods and assured that participants' identities and information given would remain anonymous and confidential. A reminder email was sent after eight weeks. Responses were collected and data were analyzed using the Chi-square test at p = 0.05. RESULTS: The majority of respondents (86.3%) would deal with NPAAA cases "differently" from vital-pulp ones (p < 0.001). More endodontists (40%) used two or three irrgants than GDPs (29.5%). Whilst the highest proportion of endodontists (29.7%) rarely prescribed antibiotics, the highest proportion of GDPs (26%) generally did so (p < 0.001). Whilst the highest proportion of GDPs (26.9%) over-instrumented the largest canal in the first visit, most endodontists (56.8%) performed complete cleaning & shaping (C&S) (p < 0.001). In cases of non-stopped exudates, whilst the highest proportions of endodontists would either let the patient wait till the exudates significantly reduce then continue their intended approach (40.5%) or insert ICMs and temporize the tooth (40.5%), the highest proportion of GDPs (30.8%) would insert only dry cotton pellet without temporizing the tooth (p = 0.002). Of those who would leave the tooth open if non-stopped exudates presents in the first visit, the majority (81.9%) would temporize the tooth if little exudates present after C&S (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians, especially GDPs, opted to treat teeth involved in NPAAA differently from those with vital-pulp, such as: were using different ICMs and irrigants, C&S to different apical size preparation. GDPs should improve their practice by implementing multi-irrigants protocol while C&S, limit prescribing antibiotics, perform complete debridement of the root canal system and not to leave the tooth open between visits. Clinicians, especially GDPs, relied on their own experiences in managing NPAA cases which necessitates scientific-based guidelines.
