RESUMO

In this study, composite asymmetric membranes containing antimony (Sb) nanobelts are prepared via a straightforward phase inversion method in combination with post-pyrolysis treatment. Sb nanobelt asymmetric membranes demonstrate improved cyclability and specific capacity as the alloy anode of sodium ion battery compared to Sb nanobelt thin films without asymmetric porous structure. The unique structure can effectively accommodate the large volume expansion of Sb-based alloy anodes, prohibit the loss of fractured active materials, and aid in the formation of stable artificial solid electrolyte interphases as evidenced by an outstanding capacity retention of ∼98% in 130 cycles at 60 mA g-1. A specific capacity of ∼600 mAh g-1is obtained at 15 mA g-1(1/40C). When the current density is increased to 240 mA g-1, ∼80% capacity can be maintained (∼480 mAh g-1). The relations among phase inversion conditions, structures, compositions, and resultant electrochemical properties are revealed through comprehensive characterization.

RESUMO

Proton exchange membranes (PEMs) with both high selectivity and high permeance are of great demand in hydrogen-based applications, especially in fuel cells. Although graphene membranes have shown high selectivity of protons over other ions and molecules, the relatively low permeance of protons through perfect pristine graphene restricts its practical applications. Inspired by the nitrogen-assisted proton transport in biological systems, we introduced N-doping to increase the proton permeance and proposed a type of N-doped graphene membranes (NGMs) for proton exchange, which have both high proton permeance and high selectivity. Compared to the state-of-the-art commercial PEMs, the NGMs show significant increases in both areal proton conductivity (2-3 orders of magnitude) and selectivity of proton to methanol (1-2 orders of magnitude). The work realized the controllable tuning of proton permeance of the graphene membrane with N-doping and developed a new type of graphene-based PEMs with high performance for practical applications.

RESUMO

Sustained antibiotic release is important to prevent the infections after surgical treatments such as guided tissue regeneration (GTR). Electrospinning provides a simple way to fabricate nanofibers for drug delivery. In this study, a simple method to achieve sustained antibiotic release by introducing mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs)with electrospinning is developed. The nanoparticles entrapped nanofibers (MSNs-PCL) were successfully fabricated, and a sustained release of gentamicin was demonstrated. The gentamicin loaded MSNs-PCL showed strong antimicrobial effects against E. coli, indicated the sustained release behavior and the retained bioactivity. The MSNs-PCL synthesized by electrospinning method shows great potential for biomedical applications such as fabricating GTR membranes.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and security of two type of rotary nickel titanium system (Twisted File and ProTaper Universal) for root canal preparation based on micro-computed tomography(micro-CT). METHODS: Twenty extracted molars (including 62 canals) were divided into two experimental groups and were respectively instrumented using Twisted File rotary nickel titanium system (TF) and ProTaper Universal rotary nickel titanium system (PU) to #25/0.08 following recommended protocol. Time for root canal instrumentation (accumulation of time for every single file) was recorded. The 0-3 mm root surface from apex was observed under an optical stereomicroscope at 25 × magnification. The presence of crack line was noted. The root canals were scanned with micro-CT before and after root canal preparation. Three-dimensional shape images of canals were reconstructed, calculated and evaluated. The amount of canal central transportation of the two groups was calculated and compared. RESULTS: The shorter preparation time [(0.53 ± 0.14) min] was observed in TF group, while the preparation time of PU group was (2.06 ± 0.39) min (P<0.05). In mid-root level, TF group shaping resulted in less canal center transportation than PU group [(0.070 ± 0.056) mm vs. (0.097 ± 0.084) mm, P<0.05]. No instrument separation was observed in both the groups. Cracks were not found in both the groups either based in micro-CT images or observation under an optical stereomicroscope at 25 × magnification. CONCLUSION: Compared with ProTaper Universal, Twisted File took less time in root canal preparation and exhibited better shaping ability, and less canal transportation.

RESUMO

The spline teeth fracture of separator plates in wet multi-plate clutches compromises driving safety and the vehicle's lifespan. Tooth fracture is mainly caused by stress concentration at the tooth root and uneven circumferential load distribution. This paper considers parameters such as torque, teeth count, tooth profile, and misalignment errors, establishing the corresponding finite element (FE) model to analyze the impact of the above-mentioned parameters on the strength of the separator plates. Analysis under even and biased load circumstances demonstrated that an optimum tooth count and profile can significantly increase the strength of the separator plates, offering advice for the optimized design of wet multi-plate clutch separator plates.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the long-term clinical performance of Giomer and a self-etch adhesive system compared with a nanofilled resin composite and etch-and-rinse adhesive system in Class I and Class II restorations. METHOD: The study was designed to be double-blinded with intra-individual control. 48 patients with 54 pairs of cavities (class I or class II) were recruited. Each pair of restorations was placed with either BEAUTIFIL II (BF) and FL-BOND II (FL) or Filtek Z350 (Z350) and Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (SMP). Clinical evaluation was performed at baseline, 6-month, 18-month, 4-year and 8-year after placement according to modified USPHS criteria. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and log rank tests were performed (SPSS 20.0, IBM Corporation, US) to compare the survival probability of different restorations.A generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) was adopted to assess the performance of the materials. The McNemar test was used to show significant changes for all the evaluation criteria and difference between them. RESULTS: At the eight-year recall, 32 patients with 67 restorations were present. There were twelve restorations in total recorded as failure due to loss of retention, restoration fracture, secondary caries, tooth fracture or endodontic treatment due to pulp necrosis. The survival probabilities and calculated annual failure rate(AFR) of BF and Z350 restorations at 8-year were 87.2 % vs 87.8 % and 1.6 % vs 1.5 % respectively with no significant difference (p > 0.05)between the two materials. Over the recall time range of eight years, decreased possibility of alpha rating was observed for retention, marginal adaptation, marginal staining and surface roughness for both materials (p < 0.05). Decreased possibility of alpha rating was observed for surface staining and secondary caries for Z350 (p < 0.05) and restoration fracture for BF (p < 0.05), respectively. Comparing the two restorative systems over eight years, no significant difference was seen for linear decline of the possibility of alpha rating for any of the criteria evaluated (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Giomer material and the self-etch adhesive system had comparable clinical performance with nanofilled resin composite and etch-and-rinse adhesive system over the observation period of eight years.

RESUMO

Objective:To investigate the relationship between idiopathic condylar resorption (ICR) and arch width disorder. Methods:Thirty-two patients with ICR and twenty patients without condylar resorption were enrolled according to the same inclusion criteria. They were divided into experimental group and control group. The experimental group was divided into unilateral ICR group and bilateral ICR group according to the affected side of condylar resorption, and then experimental group was divided into subgroups ICR Ⅰ, ICRⅡand ICR Ⅲ according to the degree of condylar resorption. Patients with no condylar resorption were used as a control group. The width of anterior, middle and posterior segments of dental arch on cone beam computed tomography(CBCT) was measured and the two groups of measured values were statistically analyzed. Results:Compared with the control group, the width of maxillary anterior, middle and posterior segments in ICR group was significantly reduced, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.01). But the width of mandibular segment was not significantly different from that in control group(P>0.05). There was no significant difference in the width of anterior, middle and posterior dental arch between subgroups(P>0.05). Conclusion:Almost all patients with ICR have malocclusion of maxillary and mandibular arch width, but there is no significant correlation between the malocclusion width and the severity of condylar resorption.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The long-term efficacy of the Dumon stent in the treatment of benign airway stenosis is unclear. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of the Dumon stent in patients with benign airway stenosis. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients with benign airway stenosis who were treated with a Dumon stent at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University between March 2014 and October 2021. We included patients with successful removal of silicone stents after implantation. The clinical data and information on bronchoscopic interventional procedures and related complications were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: Ninety-nine patients with benign airway stenosis were included. The stent was placed mainly in the trachea (44.4%) and left main bronchus (43.4%). The main type of stenosis was post-tuberculosis bronchial stenosis (57.6%). The overall cure rate was 60.6%. Stent-related complications included retention of secretions (70.7%), granuloma formation (67.7%), stent angulation (21.2%), and stent migration (12.1%). The stent was less effective for left main bronchus stenosis (p = 0.012). Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified that stent placement for more than 13 months, a stent-intervention number of ⩽ 1 predicted a favorable outcome. CONCLUSION: The efficacy and safety of the Dumon stent for benign airway stenosis need improvement. The stent is less effective for left main bronchus stenosis; regular follow-up is required in such cases. Stent placement for > 13 months and no more than once stent intervention within a 6-month period were associated with a favorable outcome.

RESUMO

Background: Oral microbiota is closely related to the homeostasis of the oral cavity and lungs. To provide potential information for the prediction, screening, and treatment strategies of individuals, this study compared and investigated the bacterial signatures in periodontitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Materials and methods: We collected subgingival plaque and gingival crevicular fluid samples from 112 individuals (31 healthy controls, 24 patients with periodontitis, 28 patients with COPD, and 29 patients with both periodontitis and COPD). The oral microbiota was analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and diversity and functional prediction analysis were performed. Results: We observed higher bacterial richness in individuals with periodontitis in both types of oral samples. Using LEfSe and DESeq2 analyses, we found differentially abundant genera that may be potential biomarkers for each group. Mogibacterium is the predominant genus in COPD. Ten genera, including Desulfovibrio, Filifactor, Fretibacterium, Moraxella, Odoribacter, Pseudoramibacter Pyramidobacter, Scardovia, Shuttleworthia and Treponema were predominant in periodontitis. Bergeyella, Lautropia, Rothia, Propionibacterium and Cardiobacterium were the signature of the healthy controls. The significantly different pathways in the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) between healthy controls and other groups were concentrated in genetic information processing, translation, replication and repair, and metabolism of cofactors and vitamins. Conclusions: We found the significant differences in the bacterial community and functional characterization of oral microbiota in periodontitis, COPD and comorbid diseases. Compared to gingival crevicular fluid, subgingival plaque may be more appropriate for reflecting the difference of subgingival microbiota in periodontitis patients with COPD. These results may provide potentials for predicting, screening, and treatment strategies for individuals with periodontitis and COPD.

RESUMO

Device-associated infections remain a clinical challenge. The common strategies to prevent bacterial infection are either toxic to healthy mammalian cells and tissue or involve high doses of antibiotics that can prompt long-term negative consequences. An antibiotic-free coating strategy to suppress bacterial growth is presented herein, which concurrently promotes bone cell growth and moderates the dissolution kinetics of resorbable magnesium (Mg) biomaterials. Pure Mg as a model biodegradable material was coated with gallium-doped strontium-phosphate through a chemical conversion process. Gallium was distributed in a gradual manner throughout the strontium-phosphate coating, with a compact structure and a gallium-rich surface. It was demonstrated that the coating protected the underlying Mg parts from significant degradation in minimal essential media at physiological conditions over 9 days. In terms of bacteria culture, the liberated gallium ions from the coatings upon Mg specimens, even though in minute quantities, inhibited the growth of Gram-positiveStaphylococcus aureus, Gram-negative Escherichia coli, andPseudomonas aeruginosa ─ key pathogens causing infection and early failure of the surgical implantations in orthopedics and trauma. More importantly, the gallium dopants displayed minimal interferences with the strontium-phosphate-based coating which boosted osteoblasts and undermined osteoclasts in in vitro co-cultures. This work provides a new strategy to prevent bacterial infection and control the degradation behavior of Mg-based orthopedic implants, while preserving osteogenic features of the devices.

RESUMO

Corrosion issue is one of the most crucial bottlenecks for extensive employment of Mg alloys, in particular under harsh engineering conditions. Differing from traditional approaches, a self-healing protective coating composed of lactoglobulin is proposed herein to offer sustainable protection to the underlying Mg parts. Corrosion resistance, evaluated by electrochemical measurements and hydrogen evolution tests, indicates that the lactoglobulin composite film exhibits nobler corrosion potential (-1.28 VSCE), smaller corrosion current density (8.4 × 10-6 A/cm2), and lower average corrosion rate (∼0.03 mm/y) than those of its bare counterparts. Moreover, the pre-made cracks in the film were evidently self-healed within 24 h of exposure to corrosive media. The proposed self-healing lactoglobulin composite film provides opportunities to tackle the corrosion challenges of Mg alloys.

RESUMO

CASE PRESENTATION: A 12-year-old girl presented with shortness of breath with exercise for 2 weeks. Her oxygen saturation was 85% during exercise. Birth and family histories were unremarkable. The girl was healthy until 7.1 years of age, when she suffered a "pneumonia" with fever, dyspnea, and hypoxemia, which diminished after a 19-day treatment with antibiotics and methylprednisolone. These symptoms relapsed 8 months later, and she was diagnosed with rapidly progressive interstitial lung disease (ILD) and a Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection. At that time, her symptoms failed to respond to a course of antibiotic therapy but resolved with IV methylprednisolone at 2.7 mg/kg/day. She remained on a tapering dose of methylprednisolone plus methotrexate for the next 18 months until withdrawal of these medications because of return of almost normal lung imaging. She had never had myalgia, muscle weakness, arthritis, rashes, mechanic's hands, Raynaud's phenomenon, dry mouth, or dry eyes.

RESUMO

High nitrogen nickel-free austenitic stainless steels (HNSs) have great potentials to be used in dentistry owing to its exceptional mechanical properties, high corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. In this study, HNSs with nitrogen of 0.88 wt% and 1.08 wt% displayed much lower maximum pit depths than 316L stainless steel (SS) after 21 d of immersion in abiotic artificial saliva (2.2 µm and 1.7 µm vs. 4.5 µm). Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) evaluations revealed that Streptococcus mutans biofilms led to much severer corrosion of 316L SS than HNSs. Corrosion current densities of HNSs were two orders of magnitude lower than that of 316L SS after incubation of 7 d (37.5 nA/cm2 and 29.9 nA/cm2 vs. 5.63 µA/cm2). The pitting potentials of HNSs were at least 550 mV higher than that of 316L SS in the presence of S. mutans, confirming the better MIC resistance of HNSs. Cytotoxicity assay confirmed that HNSs were not toxic to MC3T3-E1 cells and allowed better sessile cell growth on them than on 316L SS. It can be concluded that HNSs are more suitable dental materials than the conventional 316L SS.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Post-tuberculosis bronchial stenosis (PTBS) is one of the most common complications of tracheobronchial tuberculosis. Silicone stent serves as a major treatment for maintaining airway patency. However, silicone stent placement remains a large challenge in patients with severe cicatricial PTBS. Our objective was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of covered, self-expanding, metallic stents (SEMSs) as a transition to silicone stent implantation for treating severe PTBS. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the data of patients with severe PTBS who received airway stenting in the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical University between September 2015 and May 2019. The types of the stent, intervention procedures, bronchoscopic findings, clinical outcomes and related complications were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: Fifty-eight cases with severe PTBS were included in this study. Thirteen (22.4%) of the patients received bronchial silicone stent implantation immediately after dilations. For the remaining 45 (77.6%) patients, silicone stents could not be deployed after dilations and SEMSs implantation was implemented as a bridge to silicone stenting. The SEMSs were placed for an interval of 28.4 ± 11.1 days. All of the silicone stents were inserted successfully following the removal of SEMSs. No SEMS-related complication occurred. The subgroup analysis showed that patients who received transitional SEMSs had less luminal caliber but fewer transbronchial dilations before silicone stent implantation (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Covered SEMS placement as a transition to silicone stenting could serve as a feasible procedure to reduce complications and improve the success rate of silicone stent implantation in patients with severe PTBS.The reviews of this paper are available via the supplemental material section.

RESUMO

Device-associated infection is one of the significant challenges in the biomedical industry and clinical management. Controlling the initial attachment of microbes upon the solid surface of biomedical devices is a sound strategy to minimize the formation of biofilms and infection. A synergistic coating strategy combining superhydrophobicity and bactericidal photodynamic therapy is proposed herein to tackle infection issues for biomedical materials. A multifunctional coating is produced upon pure Mg substrate through a simple blending procedure without involvement of any fluoride-containing agents, differing from the common superhydrophobic surface preparations. Superhydrophobic features of the coating are confirmed through water contact angle measurements (152.5 ± 1.9°). In vitro experiments reveal that bacterial-adhesion repellency regarding both Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) strains approaches over 96%, which is evidently ascribed to the proposed synergistic strategy, that is, superhydrophobic nature and microbicidal ability of photodynamic therapy. Electrochemical analysis indicates that the superhydrophobic coating provides pronounced protection against corrosion to underlying Mg with 80% reduction in the corrosion rate in minimum essential medium and retains the original surface features after 168 h exposure to neutral salt spray. The proof-of-concept research holds a great promise for tackling the notorious bacterial infection and poor corrosion resistance of Mg-based biodegradable materials in a simple, efficient, and environmentally benign manner.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Airway stents has been widely used in airway stenosis and fistula, yet clinical date of airway stents in reestablishment a complex airway is insufficient. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety to combine the silicon stent and the metal stent in reestablishment a complex malignant airway. METHODS: Patients with non-operable complex malignant airway stenosis and fistula were recruited in this study. Silicon Y stent combined with covered metal stent (Hybrid stent) were inserted to reestablishment the airway. Clinical outcomes and complications were observed over six months. RESULTS: A total of 23 silicon Y stents and 25 covered metal stents were inserted in 23 patients. Nineteen of 23 (19/23, 82.6%) patients felt a immediately relieving of current symptoms. The mean duration of stents placement in patients was (153.43±9.14) days. The modified British Medical Research Council, Karnofsky Performance Status and Performance Status scale were improved significantly after stenting. A total of 12 patients living with stent at 6 months. Others dead of tumor progression. There were no death or immediate complications related to hybrid stenting implication. CONCLUSIONS: Hybrid stenting proved to be useful and was well-tolerated in the management of complex malignant airway stenosis and fistula.

RESUMO

Despite of technical advancements in design and development of new biomaterials, device-related infections continue to occur and can be life-threatening. Differing from existing research work pertaining to introducing antibacterial function upon device surface, this study attempts to address such germ-infection issues through controlled release of antibacterial species from bulk gallium (Ga) and strontium (Sr) containing magnesium (Mg) alloys. To validate such a conceptual framework, Mg alloys containing micro-level concentrations of Ga and/or Sr (0.1 wt%) are employed as model materials, along with commercially pure Mg and titanium (Ti) as control groups. Biodegradation progress of such metal specimens is examined through pH and mass loss measurements, and inductively coupled plasma - atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) as a function of immersion time in Trypticase Soy Broth (TSB) solution under physiological conditions. In vitro biocompatibility and antibacterial performance are characterised through MTT proliferation assay with human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) and the spread plate method with three representative bacterial strains, i.e. S. aureus (ATCC 43300), E. coli (ATCC 25922), and S. epidermidis (ATCC 35984). Animal tests are performed through implanting target metal rods into femurs of Sprague Dawley rats, accompanied with injection of S. aureus to build a model of osteomyelitis. Results demonstrate that such lean additions of Ga and/or Sr reduce the degradation kinetics of Mg matrix, and the release of Ga3+ ions plays a crucial role in disabling the viability of all selected bacterial strains. The histological tests confirm that the growth of fibrous tissue has been accelerated in the vicinity of Mg-based implants, in comparison to that of blank and c.p. Ti controls. It is also striking that the smallest number density of S. aureus bacteria on the surface of the retrieved Ga-containing Mg rod implants. Such a proof-of-concept study provides a new and feasible strategy to address the notorious device-infection issues associated with biomedical implants for bone fracture management.

RESUMO

A Zinc-loaded montmorillonite (Zn-MMT) coating was hydrothermally prepared using Zn2+ ion intercalated sodium montmorillonite (Na-MMT) upon magnesium (Mg) alloy AZ31 as bone repairing materials. Biodegradation rate of the Mg-based materials was studied via potentiodynamic polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and hydrogen evolution tests. Results revealed that both Na-MMT and Zn-MMT coatings exhibited better corrosion resistance in Dulbecco's modified eagle medium (DMEM) + 10% calf serum (CS) than bare Mg alloy AZ31 counterparts. Hemolysis results demonstrated that hemocompatibility of the Na-MMT and Zn-MMT coatings were 5%, and lower than that of uncoated Mg alloy AZ31 pieces. In vitro MTT tests and live-dead stain of osteoblast cells (MC3T3-E1) indicated a significant improvement in cytocompatibility of both Na-MMT and Zn-MMT coatings. Antibacterial properties of two representative bacterial strains associated with device-related infection, i.e. Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), were employed to explore the antibacterial behavior of the coatings. The measured inhibitory zone and bacterial growth rate confirmed that Zn-MMT coatings exhibited higher suppression toward both E. coli and S. aureus than that of Na-MMT coatings. The investigation on antibacterial mechanism through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release assay manifested that Zn-MMT coating led to severe breakage of bacterial membrane of E. coli and S. aureus, which resulted in a release of cytoplasmic materials from the bacterial cells. In addition, the good inhibition of Zn-MMT coatings against E. coli and S. aureus might be attributed to the slow but sustainable release of Zn2+ ions (up to 144 h) from the coatings into the culture media. This study provides a novel coating strategy for manufacturing biodegradable Mg alloys with good corrosion resistance, biocompatibility and antibacterial activity for future orthopedic applications. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The significance of the current work is to develop a corrosion-resistant and antibacterial Zn-MMT coating on magnesium alloy AZ31 through a hydrothermal method. The Zn-MMT coating on magnesium alloy AZ31 shows better corrosion resistance, biocompatibility and excellent antibacterial ability than magnesium alloy AZ31. This study provides a novel coating on Mg alloys for future orthopedic applications.

RESUMO

Some of the critical properties for a successful orthopedic or dental implant material are its biocompatibility and bioactivity. Pure titanium (Ti) and zirconium (Zr) are widely accepted as biocompatible metals, due to their non-toxicity. While the bioactivity of Ti and some Ti alloys has been extensively investigated, there is still insufficient data for Zr and titanium-zirconium (TiZr) alloys. In the present study, the bioactivity, that is, the apatite forming ability on the alkali and heat treated surfaces of Ti, Zr, and TiZr alloy in simulated body fluid (SBF), was studied. In particular, the effect of the surface roughness characteristics on the bioactivity was evaluated for the first time. The results indicate that the pretreated Ti, Zr and TiZr alloy could form apatite coating on their surfaces. It should be noted that the surface roughness also critically affected the bioactivity of these pretreated metallic samples. A surface morphology with an average roughness of approximately 0.6 microm led to the fastest apatite formation on the metal surfaces. This apatite layer on the metal surface is expected to bond to the surrounding bones directly after implantation.

RESUMO

A numerical simulation of the phase separation in binary lipid membrane under the effect of stationary shear flow is performed. We numerically solved the modified two-dimensional time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equations with an external velocity term, employing the CDS (i.e., Cell Dynamical System) technique. In the present simulation, stationary shear flows with different shear rates are taken into account. The evolution process of the phase separation is illustrated macroscopically via the snapshot figures and simulated scattering patterns at several typical moments. For each case, the growth exponents of the characteristic domain sizes in both directions parallel and perpendicular to the flow are studied, and the domain area as well. Also, the behavior of the excess viscosity has been investigated, which is a peculiar rheological indicator of such a membrane system with domain structures.
