RESUMO

Optically transparent glass with antifogging and antibacterial properties is in high demand for endoscopes, goggles, and medical display equipment. However, many of the previously reported coatings have limitations in terms of long-term antifogging and efficient antibacterial properties, environmental friendliness, and versatility. In this study, inspired by catfish and sphagnum moss, a novel photoelectronic synergy antifogging and antibacterial coating was prepared by cross-linking polyethylenimine-modified titanium dioxide (PEI-TiO2), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). The as-prepared coating could remain fog-free under hot steam for more than 40 min. The experimental results indicate that the long-term antifogging properties are due to the water absorption and spreading characteristics. Moreover, the organic-inorganic hybrid of PEI and TiO2 was first applied to enhance the antibacterial performance. The Staphylococcus aureus and the Escherichia coli growth inhibition rates of the as-prepared coating reached 97 and 96% respectively. A photoelectronic synergy antifogging and antibacterial mechanism based on the positive electrical and photocatalytic properties of PEI-TiO2 was proposed. This investigation provides insight into designing multifunctional bioinspired surface materials to realize antifogging and antibacterial that can be applied to medicine and daily lives.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to report our experience of angioplasty with paclitaxel-coated balloon (PCB) versus common balloon (CB) for the treatment of repeated failing vascular access. METHODS: Retrospective, single-center analysis consisting of 88 patients treated with percutaneous transluminal angioplasty in the period from October 2020 through December 2021. Patients were divided into two groups according to the type of treatment as PCB (n = 41) and CB (n = 47). We analyzed target lesion primary patency and vascular access primary patency for 6 months and the rate of complications. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the target lesion primary patency which was similar for 6 months between the two groups (PCB group vs. CB group at 1, 3, and 6 months; 95.12 vs. 89.36% (p = 0.55), 75.61 versus 74.47% (p = 0.90), 53.66% versus 63.83% (p = 0.33), respectively). Similarly, vascular access primary patency in the PCB group and CB group was 90.24 and 89.36% (p = 0.83), respectively, at 1 month, 65.85 and 68.09% (p = 0.82), respectively, at 3 months, 39.02 and 53.19% (p = 0.18), respectively, at 6 months. There were no major complications after endovascular treatment. CONCLUSION: Compared to CB angioplasty, PCB angioplasty has no short-term patency benefit in the treatment of vascular access repeated stenosis.

tLyP-1 peptide is verified to recognize neuropilin (NRP) receptors overexpressed on the surface of both glioma cells and endothelial cells of angiogenic blood vessels. In the present study, tLyP-1 was conjugated with DSPE-PEG2000 to prepare tLyP-1-DSPE-PEG2000, which was further employed to prepare tLyP-1 functionalized nanoliposome (tLyP-1-Lip) to achieve enhancing target of glioblastoma. Process parameters were systematically studied to investigate the feasibility of tuning the internal water phase of nanoliposomes and encapsulating more Temozolomide (TMZ). The particle size, Zeta potential, and encapsulation efficiency of tLyP-1-Lip/TMZ were fully characterized in comparison with conventional nanoliposomes (Lip-TMZ) and PEGylated nanoliposomes (PEG-Lip/TMZ). The release behaviors of TMZ from PEG-Lip/TMZ and tLyP-1-Lip/TMZ are similar and slower than TMZ-Lip in acidic solutions. The tLyP-1-Lip/TMZ demonstrated the strongest cytotoxicity in comparison with TMZ-Lip and PEG-Lip/TMZ in both U87 and HT22 cells, and displayed the highest cellular internalization. The pharmacokinetic studies in rats revealed that tLyP-1-Lip/TMZ showed a 1.4-fold (p < 0.001) increase in AUCINF_obs and a 1.4-fold decrease (p < 0.01) in clearance compared with PEG-Lip/TMZ. We finally confirmed by in vivo imaging that tLyP-1-Lip were able to penetrate the brains and tumors of mice.

The transition from soluble to colloidal polyelectrolyte complex normally occurs at a critical non-stoichiometric charge ratio. Here, it is demonstrated that the conventional batch mixing produces heterogeneous binding and complexation, which can easily mask this soluble-colloidal complex transition (sol-col transition) even for weakly binding polyelectrolytes like polyacrylic acid (PAA) and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC). When mixed efficiently using multi-inlet vortex mixer (MIVM), the sol-col transition occurs beyond a critical charge ratio (n-/n+) and the large colloidal complexes are formed through the aggregation of small primary complexes (as revealed by atomic force microscopy). Moreover, the sol-col transition occurs at a constant charge ratio below the overlapping concentration (c*) of the long host polyelectrolyte, but at lower charge ratios above c* due to chain entanglement. When adding NaCl to the solution, the sol-col transition charge ratio first decreases, then remained stable for a period, and finally increased and vanished at high ionic strength. When replacing NaCl with chaotropic salts, the sol-col transition occurs at lower charge ratios, while kosmotropes has little impact. The solvent quality and polymer hydrophobicity effects are also discussed. With the assistance of rapid mixing, this study provides a more reliable way of studying the sol-col transition of polyelectrolyte complexes.

Transporting water and oil microdroplets is important for applications ranging from water harvesting to biomedical analysis but remains a great challenge. This is due to the amplified contact angle hysteresis and insufficient driving force in the micrometer scale, especially for low-surface energy oil droplets. Coalescence of neighboring droplets, which releases vast additional surface energy, was often required, but its relatively uncontrollable nature brings uncertainties to the droplet motion, and the methodology is not applicable to single droplets. Here we introduce a strategy based on slippery surface with immobilized lubricant menisci to directionally transport microdroplets. By simply mounting hydrogel dots on slippery surface, the raised menisci remotely pump microdroplets via capillary force with high efficiency, regardless of droplet size or surface energy. By proof-of-concept experiments, we demonstrate that our method allows for highly efficient water droplet collection and highly sensitive biomedical analyte detection.

In the present study, nanoliposomes with tuneable structure elasticity were prepared by reverse-phase evaporation. Both Fluorescence Polarization and Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer was employed to characterize the structural elasticity of resultant nanoliposomes. Temozolomide, a kind of hydrophilic drug as the first-line treatment choice for glioblastoma, was encapsulated into nanoliposomes. The results showed that the flexibility of nanoliposomes gradually increased with sodium cholate, while decreasing with cholesterol, Labrafac CC and Labrafac PG adding. Furthermore, the structural flexibility of nanoliposomes was positively correlated with the encapsulation efficiency and release rate and cellular uptake. Our research reveals the structural flexibility of nanoliposomes could affect in vitro characteristics and thereafter in vivo behaviors of nanoliposomes.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) has become an important minimally invasive surgical technique for fracture stabilization and pain relief in patients with vertebral compression fractures. However, intraspinal cement leakage following PKP is a serious postoperative complication that can lead to morbidity and mortality. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe an uncommon case of epidural leakage of bone cement in an 81-year-old woman who underwent posterior lumbar decompression and fusion from L3-5 4 years prior and had an unremarkable postoperative course. The patient was admitted to Peking Union Medical College Hospital with complaints of muscle weakness and severe low back pain radiating to the left thigh 1 week after PKP of L5 due to an acute osteoporotic compression fracture. Computed tomographic imaging revealed massive leakage of cement into the spinal canal at L5-S1, and therefore, surgical decompression and removal of epidural cement were performed carefully without causing a dural tear. She improved remarkably and no neurologic deterioration was observed in the postoperative period during the one-year follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: We present the rare reported case, to our knowledge, of epidural cement leakage after PKP at the segment of internal fixation and discuss the most likely etiologies and preventive measures for this condition.

In order to improve the mechanical and dielectric properties of radome cyanate, a synergistic reinforcement method is employed to develop a resin-based ternary-composite with high heat-resistance and preferable radar-band transmission, which is expected to be applied to fabricate radomes capable of resisting high temperature and strong electric field. According to copolymerization characteristics and self-curing mechanism, epoxy resin (EP) and bismaleimide (BMI) are employed as reinforcements mixed into a cyanate ester (CE) matrix to prepare CE/BMI/EP composites of a heat-resistant radome material by high-temperature viscous-flow blending methods under the catalysis of aluminum acetylpyruvate. The crystallization temperature, transition heat, and reaction rate of cured polymers were tested to analyze heat-resistance characteristics and evaluate material synthesis processes. Scanning electron microscopy was used to characterize the micro-morphology of tensile fracture, which was combined with the tensile strength test and dynamic thermomechanical analysis to investigate the composite modifications on tenacity and rigidity. Weibull statistics were performed to analyze the experimental results of the dielectric breakdown field, and the dielectric-polarization and wave-transmission performances were investigated according to alternative current dielectric spectra. Compared with the pure CE and the CE composites individually reinforced by EP or BMI, the CE/BMI/EP composite acquires the most significant amelioration in both the mechanical and electrical insulation performances as indicated by the breaking elongation and dielectric breakdown strength being simultaneously improved by 40%, which are consistently manifested by the obviously increased transverse lines uniformly distributed on the fracture cross-section. Furthermore, the glass-transition temperature of CE/BMI/EP composite reaches the highest values of nearly 300 °C, with the relative dielectric constant and dielectric loss being mostly reduced to less than 3.2 and 0.01, respectively. The experimental results demonstrate that the CE/BMI/EP composite is a highly-qualified wave-transmission material with preferences in mechanical, thermostability, and electrical insulation performances, suggesting its prospective applications in low-frequency transmittance radomes.

PURPOSE: Surgical procedures on atlantoaxial dislocation remain controversial. The aim of this observational retrospective study was to investigate the treatment algorithm of surgical procedures. METHODS: According to CT and intraoperative evaluation during direct posterior reduction, 135 AAD cases were categorized into three groups: Group I: reducible dislocation; Group II: irreducible dislocation (Group IIa: effective decompression achieved after posterior reduction; Group IIb: no effective decompression after posterior reduction); and Group III: fixed dislocation. Group III presented with extensive bony fusions. Group I and Group IIa were treated with direct posterior reduction and fixation. Group IIb underwent posterior fixation and transoral odontoidectomy. Group III underwent transoral odontoidectomy alone. Japanese Orthopedic Association scores (JOA) were assessed to evaluate clinical status before and 6, 12 months after surgery. RESULTS: Our study included 118 Group I cases, 16 Group II cases (Group IIa: 11 cases; Group IIb: 5 cases), and one Group III case. Follow-up ranged from 12 to 36 months. PRIMARY OUTCOME: Anatomic atlantoaxial reduction was achieved in 118 of 135 patients (87.4%). Clinical improvements were seen in 96.3% (130/135) all the patients. Solid atlantoaxial fusion was shown in 134 patients. Secondary outcome: The overall complication rate was 3.7% (5/135). For Group I, the mean postoperative 6-month JOA was 14.5 versus 12.2 in preoperative patients (paired Student's t test, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: This article proposes a clinical procedure that assists with therapeutic decision making and indicates the severity and difficulty of reduction of the atlantoaxial joint. By tracking reporter molecules such as green fluorescent protein and luciferase, researchers can determine physiological status and follow processes both in vitro and in vivo.Here, we describe a dual-reporter imaging method, in which a fusion of eGFP and Luc2 is introduced into hosts using lentiviral particles based on HIV-1. The fusion molecule is both fluorescent and bioluminescent, and is therefore ideal as an optical marker in clinical and research applications.We characterized multiple technical indices of the molecule,including sensibility, biocompatibility, lifetime, and others.Lentiviral particles carrying the reporter were strongly infective in endothelial progenitor (EPC) and GL261 glioma cells,as well as in live mice. By transforming Luc2-eGFP into hosts, morphological and quantitative data can be collected not only from tissue specimens but also from live animal models.

Hollow silica microspheres with mesoporous shells were prepared by the sacrificial template method. Hollow silica microsphere-containing acrylate resin-based dental restoration materials were prepared by using hollow silica microspheres as NaF reservoirs. Fluoride release performances from naked hollow silica microspheres, acrylate resin, and hollow silica microsphere-containing acrylate resin-based dental restorative materials in an artificial saliva were investigated. The results showed that hollow silica microsphere-containing acrylate resin-based dental restorative materials had higher cumulative fluoride release quantities and sustained fluoride release rates than traditional acrylate resin-based dental restorative materials. Fluoride release could be tuned by changing the mesoporous shell thickness of hollow silica microsphere.

Salinity difference between seawater and river water is a sustainable energy resource that catches eyes of the public and the investors in the background of energy crisis. To capture this energy, interdisciplinary efforts from chemistry, materials science, environmental science, and nanotechnology have been made to create efficient and economically viable energy conversion methods and materials. Beyond conventional membrane-based processes, technological breakthroughs in harvesting salinity gradient power from natural waters are expected to emerge from the novel fluidic transport phenomena on the nanoscale. A major challenge toward real-world applications is to extrapolate existing single-channel devices to macroscopic materials. Here, we report a membrane-scale nanofluidic device with asymmetric structure, chemical composition, and surface charge polarity, termed ionic diode membrane (IDM), for harvesting electric power from salinity gradient. The IDM comprises heterojunctions between mesoporous carbon (pore size ∼7 nm, negatively charged) and macroporous alumina (pore size ∼80 nm, positively charged). The meso-/macroporous membrane rectifies the ionic current with distinctly high ratio of ca. 450 and keeps on rectifying in high-concentration electrolytes, even in saturated solution. The selective and rectified ion transport furthermore sheds light on salinity-gradient power generation. By mixing artificial seawater and river water through the IDM, substantially high power density of up to 3.46 W/m(2) is discovered, which largely outperforms some commercial ion-exchange membranes. A theoretical model based on coupled Poisson and Nernst-Planck equations is established to quantitatively explain the experimental observations and get insights into the underlying mechanism. The macroscopic and asymmetric nanofluidic structure anticipates wide potentials for sustainable power generation, water purification, and desalination.

The detection and structural characterization of the components of a mixture is a challenging task. Therefore, the development of a facile and general method that enables both the separation and the structural characterization of the components is desired. Diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) with the aid of a matrix is a promising tool for this purpose. However, because the currently existing matrices only separate limited components, the application of the DOSY technique is restricted. Herein we introduce a new versatile matrix, poly(dimethylsiloxane), which can fully separate many mixtures of different structural types by liquid-state NMR spectroscopy. With poly(dimethylsiloxane), liquid-state chromatographic NMR spectroscopy could become a general approach for the structural elucidation of mixtures of compounds.

Wood is a natural material with low cost and easy recovery, which porous, layered, excellent structure and mechanical properties make it possible to apply in wastewater treatment. We have successfully grown MoS2 on natural wood containing porous cellulose and introduced the high conductivity circuit path provided by Ni nanoparticles to construct a new piezoelectric three-dimensional wood block for the efficient degradation of tetracycline. Ni/MoS2/Wood exhibited excellent piezo-catalytic degradation performance, and the degradation rate of tetracycline reached 95.96 % (k = 0.0411 min-1) under ultrasonic vibration. After 5 cycles, the degradation rate still reached 90.20 %. In addition, Ni/MoS2/Wood was used as the reactor filler to degrade tetracycline through piezoelectric response triggered by hydrodynamic force, and the degradation rate reached 90.27 % after 60 min. Further, the mechanism and the possible degradation pathways of tetracycline degradation were proposed. This low-cost, recyclable and stable three-dimensional wood block piezoelectric material provides a new idea for the practical application of wastewater treatment.

Introduction: Tooth loss is associated with increased mortality risk; however, the mechanism underlying this is still not clear. The objective of this study was to explore whether frailty mediates the association between tooth loss and mortality risk among the oldest old individuals. Methods: The participants were followed up from 1998 to 2018 in the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Frailty was constructed following a standard procedure. Mortality, frailty, and tooth loss were applied as the outcome, mediator, and independent variables, respectively. The Cox model was fitted, including possible confounders, for causal mediation analysis. A total effect (TE), an average causal mediation effect (ACME), an average direct effect (ADE), and a proportion mediated (PM) effect were calculated. Results: During the 129,936 person-years at risk, 31,899 individuals with a mean age of 91.79 years were included. The TE and ADE of severe tooth loss on mortality were 0.12 (95% CI: 0.08, 0.15) and 0.09 (95% CI: 0.05, 0.13); the ACME of frailty was 0.03 (95% CI: 0.02, 0.03) with 21.56% of the TE being mediated. Discussion: This study illustrated that tooth loss is associated with mortality, and frailty appeared to mediate the relationship. It is recommended that oral health indicators and frailty status be incorporated into routine geriatric assessments to promote optimal oral health and non-frailty status.

Atherosclerotic disease is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in developed countries, and oxidized LDL (OxLDL) plays a key role in the formation, rupture, and subsequent thrombus formation in atherosclerotic plaques. In the current study, anti-mouse OxLDL polyclonal antibody and nonspecific IgG antibody were conjugated to polyethylene glycol-coated ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide (USPIO) nanoparticles, and a carotid perivascular collar model in apolipoprotein E-deficient mice was imaged at 7.0 Tesla MRI before contrast administration and at 8 h and 24 h after injection of 30 mg Fe/kg. The results showed MRI signal loss in the carotid atherosclerotic lesions after administration of targeted anti-OxLDL-USPIO at 8 h and 24 h, which is consistent with the presence of the nanoparticles in the lesions. Immunohistochemistry confirmed the colocalization of the OxLDL/macrophages and iron oxide nanoparticles. The nonspecific IgG-USPIO, unconjugated USPIO nanoparticles, and competitive inhibition groups had limited signal changes (p < 0.05). This report shows that anti-OxLDL-USPIO nanoparticles can be used to directly detect OxLDL and image atherosclerotic lesions within 24 h of nanoparticle administration and suggests a strategy for the therapeutic evaluation of atherosclerotic plaques in vivo.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influencing factors of cement leakage in vertebroplasty for the treatment of osteoporosis vertebral compression fracture (OVCF) and vertebral metastases (VM). METHODS: Retrospective analysis was conducted for 653 vertebrae in 356 patients undergoing vertebroplasty at our hospital from May 2007 to January 2011. 251 cases had 438 vertebrae with painful OVCF while 105 cases had 215 vertebrae with VM. Pre-operative computed tomography (CT) was performed to determine the presence of cortical defects or osteolysis and within 3 days after PVP to observe the distribution of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) in vertebrae and whether leakage occurred. Volume of PMMA injected into each vertebral body and types of cement leakage were compared between the OVCF and VM groups by Z test or χ². The correlation between cortical defects and cement leakages around vertebrae was assessed with Pearson correlation coefficient. RESULTS: The successful rate of PVP was 100%. The mean volume of PMMA injected into each vertebra was (5.0 ± 2.0) ml and (4.0 ± 1.7) ml in the OVCF and VM groups respectively (P < 0.05). Asymptomatic PMMA leakage was demonstrated by CT in 93 vertebrae (21.2%) in the OVCF group and in 53 vertebrae (28.8%) in the VM group respectively (P < 0.05). Cement leakages into disk were found in 58 vertebrae in the OVCF group and 16 vertebrae in the VM group respectively (P = 0.025). Cement leakages into paravertebral vein were found in 12 vertebrae in the OVCF group and 26 vertebrae in the VM group respectively (P < 0.0001). Correlation was found between cortical defects and cement leakage into paravertebral soft tissues in the OVCF group (r = 0.14) or in the VM group (r = 0.27), between end-plate defects and cement leakage into disk in the OVCF group (r = 0.29) or in the VM group (r = 0.31). CONCLUSION: As a common occurrence in vertebroplasty, cement extravasation is well-tolerated in most patients. It occurs more frequently in the patients with VM than those with OVCF, especially in cases of leakage into paravertebral vein. Cement leakage into disc or paravertebral soft tissue is predisposed in vertebrae with end plate, cortical defects or osteolysis.

Achieving a high encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity of proteins in lecithin-based liposomes has always been a challenge. Here, we use Flash Nano-Precipitation (FNP) to produce liposomes and investigated the encapsulation of model protein (Bovine Serum Albumin, BSA). Through rapid turbulent mixing, we obtained liposomes with small size, low polydispersity, and good batch repeatability at a high production rate. We demonstrated that the bilayer of liposomes prepared solely using lecithin was defective, which led to the fusion, and increased size and polydispersity. When cholesterol was added to reach a lecithin-to-cholesterol molar ratio of 5:3, a compact bilayer formed to effectively inhibit liposome fusion. The encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity of BSA was as high as âˆ¼ 68% and âˆ¼ 6% in lecithin-cholesterol liposome, respectively, far exceeding the values reported in the literature. Further study by Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation (QCM-D) revealed that the highly effective encapsulation was due to the rapid mutual adsorption between BSA and defective/curved lecithin double layers during the liposome formation. Such rapid mutual adsorption leads to the layer-by-layer assembly and formation of onion-like compact liposome structure as revealed by Cryo-TEM. This simple FNP method provides a scalable manufacturing approach for liposomes with efficient protein encapsulation. The revealed adsorption mechanism between protein and lecithin bilayers could also serve as a guide for similar studies.

A novel hybrid material (ZIF-7-NH2@MIP) combining high adsorption capacity of amino-functional zeolitic imidazolate framework and specific recognition ability of dual-template molecular imprinted polymer was synthesized. The prepared ZIF-7-NH2@MIP was characterized by a range of instrumental techniques and combined with high performance liquid chromatography for the detection of four phthalate esters. The limits of detection of the four PAEs were below the maximum residue limit of GB 3838-2002 in China, ranging from 0.04 to 0.08 µg L-1. The recoveries of the three real samples of mineral water, carbonated drinks and pulpy juices spiked at 10 µg L-1 were 88.68-98.58% and the relative standard deviations was 1.19-3.40%. The above results showed that the obtained absorbent exhibited many advantages for extracting analytes in aqueous solution especially complex environment due to the combination of the superior hydrothermal and large specific surface area of the amino-functionalized ZIF-7-NH2 and the specific identification of the dual-template molecular imprinted polymer.

Biodegradable stents can degrade step by step and thereby avoid secondary removal by endoscopic procedures in contrast to metal stents. Herein, a biodegradable composite stent, a magnesium (Mg)-based braided stent with a surface coating of poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) containing paclitaxel (PTX), was designed and tested. By adding this drug-loaded polymer coating, the radial force of the stent increased from 33 Newton (N) to 83 N. PTX was continuously released as the stent degraded, and the in vitro cumulative drug release in phosphate-buffered saline for 28 days was 115 ± 13.5 µg/mL at pH = 7.4 and 176 ± 12 µg/mL at pH = 4.0. There was no statistically significant difference in the viability of fibroblasts of stent extracts with different concentration gradients (P > 0.05), while the PTX-loaded stents effectively promoted fibroblast apoptosis. In the animal experiment, the stents were able to maintain esophageal patency during the 3-week follow-up and to reduce the infiltration of inflammatory cells and the amount of fibrous tissue. These results showed that the PTX-PLGA-coated Mg stent has the potential to be a safe and effective approach for benign esophageal stricture. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: We designed a biodegradable composite stent, having poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) containing paclitaxel (PTX) coated the surface of the magnesium (Mg)-based braided stent. We evaluated in vitro and in vivo characteristics of the Mg esophageal stent having a PLGA coating plus a variable concentration of PTX in comparison with the absence of PTX PLGA coating. The PTX PLGA stents exerted higher radial force than stents without coating, degraded more quickly in an acid medium, and effectively promoted fibroblast apoptosis in vitro experiments. In a rabbit model of caustic-induced esophageal stricture, there was an increased lumen and decreased inflammation of the esophageal wall in the animals stented with PTX-PLGA versus the sham group, indicating a potential approach for benign esophageal stricture.
