RESUMO

In this study, emulsified oil removals have been studied electrochemically by using stainless steel sponge electrode beds. A first-order electroflotation model was developed and the model estimation were consistent with the experimental results. It was found out that the mean electroflotation rate constant was mainly a function of the voltage applied to the electrode beds. In addition, the properties of intermediate materials (electrical conductivity) placed between the anode and cathode electrode beds strongly affected removal yields. For the initial concentration of 57,150 mg/L, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was obtained as 85% under the conditions of voltage gradient 15 V. The experiments were also performed by varying the electrode bed lengths. Even though higher oil yields were obtained at 27 cm bed length, similar oil yields were also obtained at 18 cm bed length, especially after 60 min, with less energy consumption. Therefore, the optimum electrode bed length was concluded to be 18 cm.

RESUMO

Experimental studies have shown that different suture materials used in testis fixation cause some degree of inflammation in the testis. This study was planned to compare the histological changes that were caused by fibrin glue which is a tissue sealant and by silk and polypropylene for transparenchymal testis fixation. 28 prepubertal rats were divided into 4 groups. Testis was fixed to the tunica vaginalis by fibrin glue in group 1, by silk in group 2 and by polypropylene in group 3. Group 4 was planned as a control. Testicular inflammation and seminiferous tubular diameter were evaluated for histological changes. The least inflammation was observed in the fibrin glue group, while the most inflammation occurred in the silk group. Seminiferous tubular diameter was 241.55 +/- 45.90 in the fibrin glue group, 151.90 +/- 8.34 in the silk group and 161.36 +/- 9.96 in the polypropylene group. In conclusion, fibrin glue, when used for testis fixation, causes less inflammation and less destruction of seminiferous tubular diameter compared with silk and polypropylene.

RESUMO

A patient and her family members showing X-linked dominant form local, hypoplastic type of amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) were investigated from view-point of their teeth, clinical, genetic, radiological and particularly dermatoglyphic findings. It was suggested that it might be a close relationship between the intra-uterine development of both AI and unusual dermatoglyphs originated from the same layer, ectoderm and an X-linked dominant gene could determine both abnormal teeth and unusual dermatoglyphic characteristics in questions.

RESUMO

The dental, clinical, genetic, radiological and dermatoglyphic findings in patients from a large kindred with congenital hypodontia of maxillary lateral incisors (CHMLI) in association with coloboma of the iris (Cl) and hypomaturation type of amelogenesis imperfecta (HTAI) are presented. The pedigree of the kindred showing multiple consanguinaeous marriages and the findings of the family members with CHMLI and a family member with CHMLI, Cl and HTAI and two members with both CHMLI and HTAI suggested that the isolated CHMLI was due to an autosomal recessive gene, but, the Cl was determined by an autosomal dominant gene linked to CHMLI gene. HTAI was an autosomal recessive character linked to both CHMLI and Cl.

RESUMO

The relation between leukemia and gingiva was investigated in the present study. An extensive tumor infiltration in the gingiva was established in 1 of 2 patients with acute leukemia (AML). An inflammatory cell infiltration in various degrees was noticed in total 28 patients with leukemia (L). Various degrees of epithelium hyperplasia in all patients existing in 14 patients with medium intensity and occurring in 14 patients with light intensity of hyperplasia were observed. An increase in the keratinization of epithelium, in 3 patients with medium intensity and 1 patient with light intensity was found. It was also seen that there were fungal infections in 3 patients with medium intensity, in 6 patients with light intensity and existing in a total 26 patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
