RESUMO

A series of thienoisoindigo (TIG)-based conjugated polymers (CPs) with high molecular weights are synthesized by direct arylation polycondensation (DArP) by using TIG derivatives as CBr monomer and multi-halogenated thiophene derivatives, i.e., (E)-1,2-bis(3,4-difluorothien-2-yl)ethene (4FTVT), (E)-1,2-bis(3,4-dichlorothien-2-yl)ethene (4ClTVT), 3,3',4,4'-tetrafluoro-2,2'-bithiophene (4FBT), and 3,3',4,4'-tetrachloro-2,2'-bithiophene (4ClBT), as CH monomers. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the high selectivity between α-CH bonds in 4FTVT, 4ClTVT, 4FBT, and 4ClBT and ß-CH bonds in TIG CBr monomer. All four resulting CPs exhibit low optical bandgaps of ca. 1.20 eV and ambipolar transport characteristics with both electron and hole mobility above 0.1 cm2  V-1  s-1 as elaborated with organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs). The polymer TIG-4FTVT delivers the best device performance. With this polymer, n-channel OTFTs with electron mobility up to 1.67 cm2  V-1  s-1 and p-channel OTFTs with hole mobility up to 0.62 cm2  V-1  s-1 are fabricated by modifying source/drain electrodes with polyethylenimine ethoxylated (PEIE) and MoO3 , respectively, to selectively inject electrons and holes.

RESUMO

3,4-Difluorothiophene-substituted aryls, i.e., 1,4-bis(3,4-difluorothiophen-2-yl)-benzene (Ph-2FTh), 1,4-bis(3,4-difluorothiophen-2-yl)-2,5-difluorobenzene (2FPh-2FTh), and 4,7-bis(3,4-difluorothiophen-2-yl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BTz-2FTh), are synthesized as C─H monomers for the synthesis of conjugated polymers (CPs) via direct arylation polycondensation (DArP) with diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) and isoindigo (IID) derivatives as C─Br monomers. The Gibbs free energies of activation for direct arylation (ΔG298 K , kcal mol-1 ) for α─C─H bonds of thiophene moieties as calculated by density functional theory (DFT) are 14.3, 16.5, and 16.4 kcal mol-1 for Ph-2FTh, 2FPh-2FTh and BTz-2FTh, respectively, meaning that inserting an electron-deficient unit in 3,3',4,4'-tetrafluoro-2,2'-bithiophene (4FBT, ΔG298K : 14.6 kcal mol-1 ) may cause a reactivity decrease of the C─H monomers. Photophysical and semiconducting properties of the resulting six CPs (i.e., DPP-Ph, DPP-2FPh, DPP-BTz, 2FIID-Ph, 2FIID-2FPh, and 2FIID-BTz) are characterized in detail. DPP-based CPs show ambipolar transport properties while IID-based ones exhibited n-type behavior owing to the deeper frontier molecular orbital energy levels of IID-based CPs. With source/drain electrodes modified with polyethylenimine ethoxylated, n-channel organic thin-film transistors with maximum electron mobility of 0.40, 0.54, 0.29, 0.05, 0.16, and 0.01 cm2 V-1 s-1 for DPP-Ph, DPP-2FPh, DPP-BTz, 2FIID-Ph, 2FIID-2FPh, and 2FIID-BTz, respectively, are fabricated. DPP-2FPh exhibits the best device performance due to the good film morphology and the highest intermolecular packing order.

RESUMO

This study aims to evaluate the effect of Nd:YAG laser therapy (NdLT) on postoperative pain, swelling, and trismus after mandibular third molar (M3) surgery. Three hundred patients were randomly divided into the Nd group (n = 100), medication group (n = 100), and Nd+medication (Nd+m) group (n = 100). The WHARFE classification system was used to assess surgical difficulty. After surgery, the Nd group was irradiated by the Nd:YAG laser in very long-pulsed mode (VLP, pulse duration 1 ms, 20 Hz, 4 W, R21-C3) in 6 regions of the extraction socket with a total energy of 300 J. For the medication group, dexamethasone 0.75 mg and loxoprofen 60 mg were prescribed immediately and every 12 h thereafter for 3 days. The Nd+m group received both treatments mentioned above. Pain assessment was performed at 6, 24, 48, and 72 h postoperatively using the visual analog scale (VAS). Swelling was evaluated by changes in the distance from (1) the tragus to the labial commissure, (2) the tragus to the pogonion, and (3) the mandibular angle to the lateral canthus preoperatively and 72 h postoperatively. Trismus was assessed by the change in maximum mouth opening. Groups Nd and Nd+m had lower VAS scores at 6 h, 24 h, and 48 h (F = 13.80, p = 0.00), but the difference between the two groups was not significant (F = 1.34, p = 0.11). However, no significant difference was observed at 72 h (p = 0.10). There was no significant difference in swelling or trismus among the three groups (p > 0.05). NdLT is an effective approach to improve complications after M3 surgery.

RESUMO

In this study, an amphiphilic conjugate based on mPEG and cholesterol-modified chitosan with hydrazone bonds in the molecules (mPEG-CS-Hz-CH) was successfully synthesized. Using the polymer as the carrier, the paclitaxel (PTX)-loaded mPEG-CS-Hz-CH micelles were prepared by an ultrasonic probe method. The mean particle size and zeta potential of the optimized PTX-loaded micelles were 146 ± 4 nm and +21.7 ± 0.7 mV, respectively. An in vitro drug release study indicated that the PTX-loaded mPEG-CS-Hz-CH micelles were stable under normal physiological conditions (pH 7.4), whereas rapid drug release was observed in the simulated tumor intracellular microenvironment (pH 5.0). An in vitro cytotoxicity study demonstrated the non-toxicity of the polymer itself, and the PTX-loaded micelles exhibited superior cytotoxicity and significant selectivity on tumor cells. An in vivo antitumor efficacy study further confirmed that the PTX-loaded micelles could improve the therapeutic efficacy of PTX and reduce the side effects. All these results suggested that the mPEG-CS-Hz-CH micelles might be promising pH-sensitive nanocarriers for PTX delivery.

RESUMO

In this work, it is reported that poly(γ-benzyl-l-glutamate)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (PBLG-b-PEG) rod-coil block copolymers (BCPs) can disperse carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in solution and form various surface nanostructures on the CNTs via solution self-assembly. In an organic solvent that dissolves the BCPs, the PBLG rod blocks adsorb on CNT surfaces, and the BCPs form conformal coatings. Then, by the introduction of water, a selective solvent for PEG blocks, the BCPs in the coatings further self-assemble into diverse surface nanostructures, such as helices (left-handed or right-handed), gyros, spheres, and rings. The morphology of the surface nanostructure can be tailored by initial organic solvent composition, preparation temperature, feeding ratio of BCPs to CNTs, degree of polymerization of PBLG blocks, and diameter of the CNTs.

RESUMO

To elucidate the effect of solidification processes on the redispersibility of drug nanocrystals (NC) during freeze-drying, ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) nanosuspensions were transformed into UDCA-NC via different solidification process included freezing and lyophilization. The effect of different concentrations of stabilizers and cryoprotectants on redispersibility of UDCA-NC was investigated, respectively. The results showed that the redispersibility of UDCA-NC was RDI-20 °C < RDI-80 °C < RDI-196 °C during freezing, which indicated the redispersibility of UDCA-NC at the conventional temperature was better more than those at moderate and rigorous condition. Compared to the drying strengthen, the employed amount and type of stabilizers more dramatically affected the redispersibility of UDCA-NC during lyophilization. The hydroxypropylmethylcellulose and PVPK30 were effective to protect UDCA-NC from damage during lyophilization, which could homogeneously adsorb into the surface of NC to prevent from agglomerates. The sucrose and glucose achieved excellent performance that protected UDCA-NC from crystal growth during lyophilization, respectively. It was concluded that UDCA-NC was subjected to agglomeration during solidification transformation, and the degree of agglomeration suffered varied with the type and the amounts of stabilizers used, as well as different solidification conditions. The PVPK30-sucrose system was more effective to protect UDCA-NC from the damage during solidification process.

RESUMO

Background: Alveolar osteitis (AO) or "dry socket" affects the quality of life of patients, and there is a high clinical demand for its effective treatment. Objective: To evaluate the effect of Er:YAG laser therapy (ErLT) on AO after mandibular third molar surgery. Methods: Eighty-three patients were randomly divided into Er (n = 43) and control groups (n = 40). In the Er group, the Er:YAG laser (2940 nm; AT Fidelis Fotona, Ljubljana, Slovenia) was used to irradiate the AO site directly in micro short-pulsed mode (pulse duration 0.1 ms, pulse energy 100 mJ, frequency 40 Hz, water 4, and air 2) until all debris and necrotic material had been removed, exposing fresh bone and soft tissue surfaces with blood exudation. The control group received mechanical therapy until the treated lesions resembled those in the Er group. Pain assessment was performed at baseline and on days 1-7 post-intervention using the visual analog scale (VAS). Wound healing was assessed using the wound healing index (WHI). The operating times of the two therapies were also recorded. Results: Group Er had lower VAS scores than the control group on days 1-3 (p = 0.00). There was no significant difference between the two groups on days 4-7 (p = 0.15). The WHI scores were better in the Er group than those in the control group (t = 2.65, p = 0.01), especially in terms of redness (t = 2.70, p = 0.01). There was no significant difference in the operating time between the two groups (t = 0.76, p = 0.45). Conclusions: Compared with mechanical therapy, ErLT for AO provides rapid pain relief and improved wound healing.

RESUMO

This study evaluated the outcomes of a bare metal stent (BMS), DCB alone, atherectomy plus a drug-coated balloon (AT + DCB) and AT alone for the treatment of femoropopliteal artery occlusion. Four groups were included in this retrospective cohort study: 119 patients underwent the BMS procedure, 89 patients underwent DCB alone, 52 patients underwent AT + DCB, and 61 patients underwent AT alone. Patients were followed-up at 1, 6, 12 and 24 months after the procedure, the clinical outcomes and complications were assessed, and the primary outcomes were primary patency and restenosis. AT + DCB showed a lower bailout stent, and BMS displayed a higher retrograde puncture, flow-limiting dissection and postdilation (p < 0.05). For all procedures, the walking distance, ABI and pain score post-procedure were significantly improved compared with the pre-procedure values (p < 0.001). The restenosis rate was higher in BMS (21.0%) and AT alone (24.6%) than in DCB (10.1%) alone and AT + DCB (11.5%) (p = 0.04); there was no difference in amputation or clinically driven target lesion revascularization among procedures. The primary patency rates were 77.7%, 89.4%, 88.0% and 73.7% in the BMS, DCB alone, AT + DCB and AT alone groups at 24 months, respectively (p = 0.03), while the secondary patency and main adverse events (stroke, MI and death) were similar. Proximal concavity, proximal target vessel diameter ≥ 5 mm, runoff number ≥ 2 and DCB use were protective factors for primary patency. Our results suggested that AT + DCB and DCB alone were associated with higher primary patency, and DCB devices (combined with/without AT) should be the preferred choice for FP lesions.

RESUMO

Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) 2C protein is a conserved non-structural protein and crucial for replication of the virus. In this study, FMDV 2C protein was prepared and the enzymatic activities were investigated in detail. The protein could digest ssDNA or ssRNA into a small fragment at about 10 nt, indicating that the protein has nuclease activity. But it did not show digestion to blunt-end dsDNA or dsRNA. The nuclease activity of 2C protein could be inhibited in 2 mM Zn2+ or Ca2+ while enhanced by Mg2+ or Mn2+. FMDV 2C protein exhibited unwinding activity to all the three kinds of dsDNA and dsRNA (5' protruded, 3' protruded, and blunt-end). The unwinding velocity to 5' protruded dsRNA was higher than to the blunt-end dsRNA. 2C protein only showed unwinding activity in high concentration of Mg2+, but no unwinding activity in physiological concentrations of Mg2+ and Ca2+, as well as in cell lysate. The 2C protein could catalyze two structured ssRNA to form double strand, thus it was proved to have RNA chaperone activity. The Mg2+ and ATP in different concentrations did not show promotion to the RNA chaperone activity. Finally, six mutant proteins (K116A, D160A, D170A, N207A, R226A, and F316A) were constructed and the enzymatic activities were analyzed. All the six mutations reduced the ATPase activity, D170A and F361A could inactivate the nuclease activity, while the N207A and F316A could inactivate the helicase activity. Our study provides a comprehensive understanding of the enzymatic activities of FMDV 2C protein.

RESUMO

Diabetes is a complex metabolic disease and islet transplantation is a promising approach for the treatment of diabetes. Unfortunately, the transplanted islets at the subcutaneous site are also affected by various adverse factors such as poor vascularization and hypoxia. In this study, we utilize biocompatible copolymers l-lactide and D,l-lactide to manufacture a biomaterial scaffold with a mesh-like structure via 3D printing technology, providing a material foundation for encapsulating pancreatic islet cells. The scaffold maintains the sustained release of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and a slow release of oxygen from calcium peroxide (CPO), thereby regulating the microenvironment for islet survival. This helps to improve insufficient subcutaneous vascularization and reduce islet death due to hypoxia post-transplantation. By pre-implanting VEGF-CPO scaffolds subcutaneously into diabetic rats, a sufficiently vascularized site is formed, thereby ensuring early survival of transplanted islets. In a word, the VEGF-CPO scaffold shows good biocompatibility both in vitro and in vivo, avoids the adverse effects on the implanted islets, and displays promising clinical transformation prospects.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to compare the rates of wound separation (WS) and surgical site infection (SSI) after cesarean delivery (CD) by a single surgeon. Pfannenstiel skin incision (PSI) was closed with Dermabond, staples, or suture. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospectively all women having CD via PSI were identified. WS and SSI rates with Dermabond were compared with other two techniques. RESULTS: Of 239 CDs performed, 88% (n = 211) were available for postpartum evaluation. The PSI was closed with Dermabond in 85 (40%), staples in 76 (36%), and suture in 50 (24%). Overall WS rate was 7%; with Dermabond, it was 5% versus 13% with staple (p = 0.090) and 2% with suture (p = 0.651). Post hoc calculation suggests a randomization of 4325 women is needed to determine if Dermabond has one-third less wound complication than suture. CONCLUSION: For the PSI closure, Dermabond may be a useful alternative skin closure device, though a randomized trial is warranted.

RESUMO

Expansin protein is a component of the cell wall generally accepted to be the key regulator of cell wall extension during plant growth. Plant hormones regulate expansin gene expression as well as plant growth during drought stress. However, the relationship between expansin and plant hormone is far from clear. Here, we studied the involvement of expansin in plant cell growth mediated by the hormones indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and abscisic acid (ABA) under osmotic stress which was induced by polyethylene glycol (PEG)-6000. Wheat coleoptiles from a drought-resistant cultivar HF9703 and a drought-sensitive cultivar 921842 were used to evaluate cell growth and expansin activity. Osmotic stress induced the accumulation of ABA. ABA induced expansin activity mainly by enhancing expansin expression, since ABA induced cell wall basification via decreasing plasma membrane H(+)-ATPase activity, which was unfavorable for expansin activity. Although ABA induced expansin activity and cell wall extension, treatment with exogenous ABA and/or fluridone (FLU, an ABA inhibitor) suggested that ABA was involved in the coleoptile growth inhibition during osmotic stress. IAA application to detached coleoptiles also enhanced coleoptile growth and increased expansin activity, but unlike ABA, IAA-induced expansin activity was mainly due to the decrease of cell wall pH by increasing plasma membrane H(+)-ATPase activity. Compared with drought-sensitive cultivar, the drought-resistant cultivar could maintain greater expansin activity and cell wall extension, which was contributive to its resultant faster growth under water stress.

RESUMO

Some patients who have heterotrophic ossification (HO) in a postburn scar are occasionally seen in the clinic. The occurrence of HO following hip and abdominal surgery is common in males, whereas females are frequently affected following burns. The HO of skin grafts in burn scars of the superior body parts is uncommon, especially on the face. We report a recent case of a male patient in whom HO arose on skin grafts on his chin. The patient presented with a history of a painless chin mass for 48 years. Computed tomography scan suggested that the mass was located within subcutaneous tissue away from the lower jaw. The density of the mass was almost the same as the cortical bone of the lower jaw. The mass was completely resected under general anesthesia. It was a rectangular mass of 3× 0.5× 0.3 cm. Histological examination gave the diagnosis of HO, which was also confirmed by immunohistochemical stainings for vimentin. Recurrence was not found in this case by clinical and radiologic follow-up at 1 year after surgery.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To investigate and analyze children,s choice of environment in oral clinics so as to provide evidence for improving the oral clinic environment. METHODS: A total of 110 children in the Pediatric Dentistry of Qingdao Stomatological Hospital Affiliated to Qingdao University were selected as the research subjects from September to December 2019 to conduct a questionnaire survey, and the results were statistically analyzed by using a Chi-square test. RESULTS: A total of 107 effective questionnaires were collected. The children surveyed liked the room with pink and blue walls (61.68%), cartoon murals (57.94%), and arranged toys (61.68%). Most of them did not dislike the special smell in the room (62.62%) and liked the smell of orange essential oil (52.34%). During treatment, the children liked watching cartoons the best (61.68%), expected doctors to be dressed in white (51.40%), and expected doctors to be treated by female doctors (68.22%). Most children wanted to be accompanied by family members during treatment (62.62%). The Chi-square test showed statistically significant differences in seven questions between preschool and school-age children: the environment of the clinic room, the color of the walls, the clinic decoration, the entertainment during treatment, color of the doctors' dress and gender, and company of the family members during treatment (P<0.05). The difference of children's choice of color of the wall and clinic decoration during the first and subsequent visit was statistically significant (P<0.05). However, no significant difference was observed in the choice of clinic environment between different genders (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Children have their own preferences for the environment in the oral clinic. For preschool children, we need to create a soothing and warm atmosphere with warm colors liked by children. For school-age children, a calm and relaxed clinic atmosphere with cold colors should be created.

RESUMO

In this work, the pyrolysis of natural rubber (NR) under N2 and H2S atmosphere was performed to illustrate the possible effect of H2S on NR decomposition with and without catalysts. A molecular dynamics simulation based on reactive force field (ReaxFF) was also conducted to understand the interaction mechanism between H2S and intermediates from NR decomposition. Furthermore, the catalytic decomposition of NR under H2S atmosphere and the adsorption characteristics of H2S by zeolites alone were also carried out to investigate the effect of catalysts on sulfur behavior and the reversed effect of H2S on catalyst activity. This work revealed that the introduction of H2S can influence the yields of pyrolytic oil and gas, as well as composition of the oil. Combining experimental and simulation studies, H2S can interact with intermediates from NR decomposition forming sulfur-containing substances in pyrolytic oil. The H2S adsorption experiments by various catalysts revealed that catalysts can chemically adsorb H2S. The introduction of Zn can promote the adsorption ability by reacting with sulfur-containing substances to generate ZnS, with the desulfurization effect following the order of 3Zn/ZSM5 > ZSM5 > 3ZnO/ZSM5.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) is considered to be among the principal pathogens in periodontal disease. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) mediated by cationic amino acid-porphyrin conjugate 4i on P. gingivalis METHODS: The uptake of 4i by P. gingivalis over different times of incubation was evaluated by optical density using a microplate reader. Laser radiation at λ=650nm-660nm with I =50 mW/cm2 at doses of 0, 3.0, 6.0, 9.0, and 12 J/cm2 was used for aPDT. A colony-counting method and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) were used to observe the neutralization of P. gingivalis. The fluorescent molecular probe 3'(p-hydroxyphenyl)-fluorescein and the reagent Singlet Oxygen Sensor Green were used to measure the quantities of •OH and 1O2 produced by 4i after irradiation with different light energies. RESULTS: The 4i conjugate was absorbed gradually by P. gingivalis, reaching a maximum at 30 min. A clear cytotoxic effect on P. gingivalis was observed with aPDT using 62.5 µM 4i, with colony counts dropping by a factor of 3.35 log10, indicating a sterilization rate of 99.95%. Light irradiation resulted principally in the production of • OHby 4i. A live/dead viability assay demonstrated substantial red fluorescence in P. gingivalis treated with aPDT. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that 4i-aPDT caused substantial cytotoxicity in P. gingivalis.

RESUMO

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was detected from at least 1 buccal specimen in 9 of 11 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-infected children (81.8%). Viral loads in buccal specimens were substantially lower than those in nasopharyngeal specimens. Buccal swabs are not good as COVID-19 screening specimens in children.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: We aim to determine the thickness of the labial plate, the distance between the cement-enamel junction (CEJ) and alveolar crest, and the inclination angle of the long axis of healthy maxillary anterior teeth by using cone- beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: A total of 345 CBCT volumes obtained by Newtom VGI® CBCT were analyzed by using the NNT software. The digital measurements of the labial bone plate thickness at level 4 mm below the CEJ, the midpoint of tooth root and the radiological tooth apex, the distance between the CEJ and alveolar crest, and the angle between the long axis of the teeth and the long axis of alveolar process were obtained from the mid-sagittal planes of maxillary incisors and canines. Plate thickness 4 mm below the CEJ was measured, and values below ≥1 mm were recorded. RESULTS: In the central incisor, 1) the angle between the long axis of the teeth and alveolar bone was 15.2°±6.2°, the distance between the CEJ and alveolar crest was (1.5±1.0) mm, labial bone plate thick-ness at 4 mm below the CEJ was (0.8±0.4) mm, the midpoint of tooth root was (0.6±0.4) mm, and the radiological tooth apex was (1.3±0.7) mm; in the lateral incisor, 16.2°±8.8°, (1.6±1.0) mm, (0.7±0.5) mm, (0.4±0.6) mm, and (1.1±0.7) mm, respectively; and in the canine, 19.0°±6.2°, (1.8±1.0) mm, (0.9±0.6) mm, (0.4±0.6) mm, and (1.2±0.7) mm, respectively. 2) The frequencies of plate thickness ≥1 mm were 28.3%, 25.8%, and 42.7% in the central incisor, lateral incisor, and canine, respectively. 3) The distance between the CEJ and alveolar crest was positively correlated with age. The correlation coefficients was 0.42 (P<0.01) in the central incisor, 0.50 (P<0.01) in the lateral incisor, and 0.62 (P<0.01) in the canine. CONCLUSIONS: The thickness of labial bone plate is thin, the distance from CEJ to alveolar crest increases with age, and the long axis of the teeth is more inclined than the long axis of alveolar process. Knowledge of these special morphological characteristics can improve the safety and result for many dental procedures.
