RESUMO

Lignocellulose degraded maize straw (LMS) was prepared with the interaction of soil-indigenous microorganisms and further deployed to attenuate the Cd contamination in polluted soil. The Lignocellulose degrading ratio was determined and results revealed the significant degradation of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin by 33.03, 26.7 and 15.97% respectively as compared to pristine maize straw (PS). Moreover, LMS was also categorized through FE-SEM, FTIR, BET analysis, elemental analysis and XPS technique and the analytical results indicated that lignocellulose structure in maize straw was successfully degraded and was involved in metal-ion complexation. Batch sorption trials revealed that Cd2+ sorption onto LMS was explained well by Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The LMS showed maximum adsorption capacities (9.84 mg g-1) for Cd2+ as compared to PS (3.30 mg g-1). Moreover, the soil incubation trials (60 days) depicted the availability of Cd decreased by 11.03 and 34.7% with PS and LMS application respectively. The addition of LMS significantly decreased the exchangeable fractions of Cd and ensued an increase in organic matter and Fe-Mn oxides bound fractions. This work clarified the LMS as a promising amendment for effective remediation of Cd-contaminated matrices.

RESUMO

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory illness caused by an autoimmune disorder of synovial membrane resulting in synovial membrane dysfunction. The available treatment particularly focuses on inhibiting macrophage proliferation and reducing the generation of pro-inflammatory cytokines. However, therapeutic success of current treatment options at targeted site is limited; therefore, development of promising therapeutic strategy is the need of time that may provide better targeted delivery of drug with added safety. In development of precision medicine to manage RA, nanotechnology is a viable option to be considered. Recent research using nanoparticles for the treatment of RA, particularly polymeric nanoparticles, has been discussed in this article. Using polymeric nanoparticles as a therapeutic method has shown considerable promise of enhancing treatment success over standard medications used in routine. It is exclusively evident that the viability of using nanoparticles is mainly owed due to their biocompatibility, chemical stability, controlled drug release, and selective drug delivery to inflamed tissues in RA model animals. The current analysis focuses on the critical design characteristics of RA-targeted nanotechnology-based strategies in quest of better therapeutic strategies for RA, and to identify leading polymer as the most effective medications in RA therapy.

RESUMO

Uncontrolled bleeding is linked to higher treatment costs, risk of post-surgical infection and increased disease and death. Hemostatic agents are used to treat excessive bleeding. A good hemostatic agent controls bleeding effectively, reduces the need for blood transfusion, removes the need for systemic drugs to control bleeding, results in shorter surgery time, and reduces the cost and length of hospital stay of the patient. Gelatin-based hemostatic agents have been widely used in medical and dental procedures, owing to their biodegradability and biocompatibility, as well as availability and low cost of raw materials. In this narrative literature review, we discuss the background and different types of gelatin-based hemostatic agents in medical and dental procedures, the comparison of gelatin-based and non-gelatin-based hemostatic agents, and the usage and development of enhanced or novel gelatin-based hemostatic agents. Gelatin-based hemostatic agents are effective and important part of bleeding control, as evidenced by its wide application in medicine and dentistry. The development of novel combination gelatin-based hemostatic agents has much potential for effective control of excessive bleeding.

RESUMO

Muslims are prohibited from consuming products that contain pig products and their derivatives, including porcine gelatin. Medical and dental products are not exempt from the use of gelatin in their formulation. This study employs attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) coupled with principal component analysis (PCA) to detect and distinguish between porcine and bovine gelatins in dental materials. The results were further verified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. Species-specific primers targeting the 212 bp porcine cytochrome b and 271 bp bovine cytochrome b genes were used to amplify DNA in nine dental material samples. Detection and distinction of gelatin standards (bovine and porcine) against gelatin present in the dental materials was achieved using ATR-FTIR combined with PCA within wavenumber 1756 cm-1-1584 cm-1 (Amide I and Amide II). The detection limit for DNA was 0.001 ng/µL and 0.0001 ng/µL for bovine and porcine gelatins, respectively. Using PCR, one sample, BDM 01, was found to contain both porcine and bovine DNA, while one sample (BDM 14) was found to be positive for bovine DNA. The findings suggest that ATR-FTIR combined with PCA and conventional PCR are applicable for the identification of porcine and bovine gelatin in dental materials.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Cervical Squamous Cell Carcinoma (CESC) is one of the most fatal female malignancies, and the underlying molecular mechanisms governing this disease have not been fully explored. In this research, we planned to conduct the analysis of Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) cervical squamous cell carcinoma microarray datasets by a detailed in silico approach and to explore some novel biomarkers of CESC. METHODS: The top commonly differentially expressed genes (DEGs) from the GSE138080 and GSE113942 datasets were analyzed by Limma package-based GEO2R tool. The protein-protein interaction (PPI) network of the DEGs was drawn through Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes (STRING), and top 6 hub genes were obtained from Cytoscape. Expression analysis and validation of hub genes expression in CESC samples and cell lines were done using UALCAN, OncoDB, GENT2, and HPA. Additionally, cBioPortal, Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) tool, Kaplan-Meier (KM) plotter, ShinyGO, and DGIdb databases were also used to check some important values of hub genes in CESC. RESULTS: Out of 79 DEGs, the minichromosome maintenance complex component 4 (MCM4), nucleolar and spindle-associated protein 1 (NUSAP1), cell division cycle associated 5 (CDCA5), cell division cycle 45 (CDC45), denticleless E3 ubiquitin protein ligase homolog (DTL), and chromatin licensing and DNA replication factor 1 (CDT1) genes were regarded as hub genes in CESC. Further analysis revealed that the expressions of all these hub genes were significantly elevated in CESC cell lines and samples of diverse clinical attributes. In this study, we also documented some important correlations between hub genes and some other diverse measures, including DNA methylation, genetic alterations, and Overall Survival (OS). Last, we also identify hub genes associated ceRNA network and 31 important chemotherapeutic drugs. CONCLUSION: Through detailed in silico methodology, we identified 6 hub genes, including MCM4, NUSAP1, CDCA5, CDC45, DTL, and CDT1, which are likely to be associated with CESC development and diagnosis.

RESUMO

In this work, a novel amino-modified chitosan/tailings composite (CS-PEI-nGT) was successfully synthesized from gold tailings particle treated by ball milling (nGT), chitosan (CS) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) as raw materials, for Lead (Pb(Ⅱ)) and Cadmium (Cd(Ⅱ)) removal from aqueous solutions. The CS-PEI-nGT was characterized by using FTIR, XRD, SEM, BET, TGA and XPS techniques. The results showed that CS-PEI-nGT had maximum adsorption capacity of 192.78 mg·g-1 and 99.46 mg·g-1 for Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ) respectively at pH 5. The adsorption kinetics was described well by pseudo-second-order kinetic adsorption model, and suggested that chemisorption as the rate-controlling step for adsorption of Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ). The isotherm data was accurately explained by Langmuir model with higher correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.9911 and 0.9642 for Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ) respectively. In addition, CS-PEI-nGT retained its selective adsorption capacity for Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ), compared to other metals such as Zn(Ⅱ), Mn(Ⅱ), Mg(Ⅱ) and Al(Ⅲ). The mechanism of the adsorption was investigated and the results revealed that amino (-NH2), silicon oxide groups (Si-O) and hydroxyl (-OH) functional groups on composite surface were accountable for metals adsorption, suggesting surface complexation, electrostatic interactions and ion exchange. Our work presents a promising strategy for tailings recycling and highly efficient removal of toxic metals ions from wastewater.

RESUMO

Managing a bleeding patient can be a challenge during dental surgery. Profuse hemorrhage due to platelet defects, coagulation disorders, vascular anomalies, medication-induced patients, as well as inherited bleeding ailments result in soft tissue hematoma, septic shock, compromised airway, and in some severe cases, death could occur. A vast array of surgical hemostatic agents are available to stop bleeding, including chitosan-based hemostatic agents. Chitosan has an advantage over other topical hemostatic materials for its ability to promote shorter bleeding times and assist in healing. Massive behind-the-scene research and development efforts are ongoing to increase the performance of chitosan as a hemostatic agent. Numerous studies on chitosan use in dental hemostasis have registered it as being safe, biodegradable, biocompatible, promoting healing, antimicrobial and bioactive. This article reviews the application of chitosan in managing hemostasis in dental patients.
