RESUMO

Objective: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) comprises a group of clinically and genetically heterogeneous inherited neuropathies with an estimated prevalence of 1 in 2500. This study aimed to analyze the clinical and mutational characteristics of Chinese CMT patients with MFN2, BSCL2 and LRSAM1 variants. Methods: In this study, genetic analysis was performed in 206 Chinese patients at Chinese PLA General Hospital from December 2012 to March 2020 with clinical diagnosis of CMT, and reported variants of MFN2, BSCL2 and LRSAM1 related to CMT2. Results: We reported ten MFN2 mutations in ten unrelated patients (7 male, 3 female), two of whom had positive family history. Three novel mutations were detected including c.475-2A>G (splicing); c.687dupA (p.E230Rfs*16) and c.558dupT (p.S186fs). We reported three BSCL2 mutations of four unrelated patients, including c.461C>G (p.S154W), c.461C>T(p.S154L), and novel variants of c.1309G>C (p.A437P) and c.845C>T (p.A282V). Furthermore, two novel variants of LRSAM1, including c.1930G>T (p.G644C) and c.1178T>A (p.L393Q) were detected in two unrelated patients. Conclusion: Mutational spectrum of MFN2-, BSCL2-and LRSAM1-related CMT disease is expanded with the identification of novel variants in Chinese patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Nicotine, the main psychoactive component of tobacco, affects cell metabolism, proliferation, adhesion and, importantly, the osteogenic differentiation of fibroblasts. Approximately 15% of all orthodontic patients are adults among who one-fifth are smokers. Hence, it is necessary to have insight into the effects of nicotine on the osteogenic differentiation of hPDLCs during orthodontic tooth movement. This study aimed to investigate the effects and mechanisms of nicotine on the osteogenic differentiation of human periodontal ligament cells (hPDLCs) under the application of cyclic tensile stress. MATERIAL AND METHODS: hPDLCs were obtained from donor third molars. The hPDLCs were treated with nicotine and/or cyclic tensile stress that was applied with a cell stress plus unit. The effect of nicotine on cell viability was analyzed using the MTT assay. The osteogenic differentiation of hPDLCs was detected by alkaline phosphatase staining, Alizarin Red S staining, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blotting. RESULTS: In combination with cyclic tensile stress, nicotine prevented the tensile stress-induced increase in alkaline phosphatase activity, formation of mineralization nodules and the upregulation of mRNA and protein expression of Runt-related transcription factor 2, transcription factor Sp7 and collagen type I; however, canonical Wnt pathway was activated. Furthermore, the addition of Dickkopf-related protein 1 and α-bungarotoxin counteracted the negative effect of nicotine and rescued the osteogenic differentiation of hPDLCs, respectively. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that nicotine prevents the increased osteogenic potential of hPDLCs induced by cyclic tensile stress by binding to an α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and activating the canonical Wnt pathway.

Objective: To analyze the therapeutic effect on HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B patients treated with Peg-IFNα-2a combined with NAs to obtain the influencing factors for predicting HBsAg clearance. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted to investigate the effect of pegylated interferon alpha-2a combined with nucleoside analogues (lamivudine/adefovir dipivoxil) on HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B. The treatment course was 96 weeks. Patients were followed up 120 weeks after the treatment. HBsAg clearance at 120 weeks was taken as the objective of the study. Logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis screened the related factors affecting HBsAg clearance. χ (2) test was used to compare count data. Results: 111 patients were treated with pegylated interferon alpha-2a combined with nucleoside analogues, and 107 patients completed the scheduled course of treatment and follow-up. HBsAg clearance rate at120 week was 29.0% (31/107). The influencing factors for analysis were: (1) gender had no effect on HBsAg clearance rate; age and baseline levels of HBV DNA and alanine aminotransferase had no significant effect on HBsAg clearance; low baseline level of HBsAg (< 3.023 lgIU/ml) was beneficial to HBsAg clearance. The area under the working characteristic curve of the subjects was 0.746, the positive predictive value was 44.4%, and the negative predictive value was 86.8%. (2) HBsAg quantification or decline in 24 weeks and 48 weeks of treatment had a good predictive effect on HBsAg clearance, and the 48 weeks predicted value was higher than 24 weeks. When the HBsAg quantification was≤2.070 lgIU/ml at 48 weeks, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.931, the positive predictive value was 52.8%, and the negative predictive value was 94.4%. When HBsAg decreased from baseline to≥0.991 lgIU/ml, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.888, the positive predictive value was 50.8%, and the negative predictive value was 97.9%. (3) The analysis of HBsAg subgroup levels at 48 weeks suggested that the "interval analysis" can forecast HBsAg clearance more exactly than "nodal analysis" .The final HBsAg clearance rate of 100 IU/ml < HBsAg≤1 000 IU/ml, 10 IU/ml < HBsAg≤100 IU/ml and HBsAg≤10 IU/ml groups reached 6.7%, 31.8% and 67.7%, respectively. (4) The ALT abnormal group in the course of treatment obtained a higher HBsAg clearance rate (48.0%, 12/25). Conclusion: 96-weeks long-term treatment with pegylated interferon-alpha -alpha-2a combined with nucleoside analogues for HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B has a good predictive value for HBsAg clearance at baseline and during treatment. The "interval level" of HBsAg at 48-weeks is more accurate in predicting HBsAg clearance, suggesting that HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B patients with low HBsAg levels at 48-weeks are the advantageous populations with HBsAg clearance. These patients are worthy of prolonged treatment to pursue "clinical cure".

Enterococcus faecalis is the major pathogen of post-endodontic disease and refractory periapical periodontitis, and recent research on this species has focused on its pathogenicity. E. faecalis most often causes disease in the form of a biofilm, and total protein expression shows a strong association with its virulence. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to explore different methods of extracting the total proteins of the E. faecalis (ATCC 33186 standard strain) biofilm. The total proteins in the biofilm were extracted using an ultrasonication method with varied parameters, including duration, amplitude setting, period, and duty cycle. After the optimal conditions of ultrasonication were determined based on the protein profile from sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis, the total protein content in the biofilm was detected using the bicinchoninic acid assay, Bradford Coomassie brilliant blue assay, and Lowry assay, and the results were compared and analyzed. The parameters for the optimal conditions of ultrasonication were as follows: a processing duration of 2 min, amplitude setting of 20%, and ultrasonication period of 4 s at a 50% duty cycle. The total protein content was 2299.1 mg/dish when measured by the bicinchoninic assay, 3793.8 mg/dish when measured by the Bradford Coomassie brilliant blue assay, and 1858.0 mg/dish when measured by the Lowry assay. These results demonstrate that the Bradford Coomassie brilliant blue assay is a simple and feasible method for use in detecting the total protein content in a bacterial biofilm.

Objective: To evaluate the incidence and factors related to daytime hypercapnia in Han and Uygur patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). Methods: There were 221 patients with OSAHS (include 179 Han patients and 42 Uygur patients) in Sleep Center of Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine of Karamay Central Hospital from 2015, Jan to Dec. All the patients underwent polysomnography (PSG), nocturnal oximetry, daytime blood gas analysis, pulmonary function test and Mouth occlusion pressure (P0.1) results were recorded. The features of hypercapnia was analyzed for patients with OSAHS, and linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the arterial carbon dioxide partial pressure (PaCO2) levels and related factors. Results: Daytime hypercapnia occurred in 16.7% (37/221) of the 221 patients with OSAHS. Compare with no hypercapnia groups, the body mass [(31.6±5.6) vs (27.9±1.7) kg/m2], sleep apnea index (AHI) [(40.9±26.3) vs (32.2±20.1) times/h], the percentage of time spent at oxygen saturation below 90 (SIT90) [(38.6±31.9)% vs (23.9±23.6)%], P0.1 [(3.08±2.86) vs (2.03±1.20) mmHg, 1 mmHg=0.133 kPa] were higher in hypercapnia groups, but the mean nocturnal arterial oxygen saturation (MSaO2) [(86.0±15.5)% vs (92.0±3.0)%], the nadir arterial oxygen saturation (LSaO2) [(68.9±13.0)% vs (75.3±9.9)%] and arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) [(74.5±23.0) vs (86.1±14.8) were lower in hypercapnia groups (all P<0.05). Compare with Han patients with OSAHS, MSaO2 and LSaO2 was lower, PaCO2 and P0.1 was higher in Uygur patients (all P<0.05). Conclusions: Uygur OSAHS patients with hypercapnia have a higher daytime PaCO2 than the Han counterparts. BMI, AHI, MSaO2, P0.1 level are all related with daytime hypercapnia in OSAHS.

Objective: To clarify the potential correlation between biological changes of meninges in periodontitis mice and cognitive impairment by analyzing the biological changes of meninges in periodontitis mice using single-cell RNA sequencing. Methods: Thirty C57BL/6 mice were divided into two groups by using random number table method (15 mice in each group). Mice in the control group were locally administered 2% carboxyl methyl cellulose (CMC) without Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) on both buccal sides. A mixture of Pg W83 and 2% CMC was applied on both buccal sides in the experimental group mice three times a week, lasting for 16 weeks in total. The absorption of alveolar bone, locomotor activity and cognitive function, the activation of microglia and astrocytes in the cortex were observed and assessed. The mRNA expression levels of Occludin in meninges and brain were detected in two groups. Single-cell RNA sequencing data of meninges were processed by uniform manifold approximation and projection (UMAP). Differential genes expressions of endothelial cells were processed by gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis. In addition, real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) was used to verify the expressions of transcription activating factor 3 (Atf3) and apolpoprotein L domain-containing 1 (Apold 1). Results: Methylene blue staining found the distances of buccal and palatal cement-enamel junction-alveolar bone crest in experimental mice [(185.60±17.60), (206.90±13.37) µm] increased significantly compared with the control group [(135.33±9.57), (163.05±14.98) µm] (t=5.02, P=0.002; t=4.37, P=0.005). Open field experiment showed the total distance and average speed of mice in the experimental group [(971.88±164.57) cm, (3.25±0.55) cm/s] were not statistically significant compared with the control group [(914.24±278.81) cm, (3.05±0.93) cm/s] (t=0.65, P=0.525; t=0.65, P=0.520). The recognition index of the experimental group [(48.02±16.92) %] was lower than the control group [(66.27±17.90) %] (t=2.40, P=0.027) by novel object recognition tests. Compared with the control group [(63.56±11.88) %], the alternation of experimental group [(50.99±14.17) %] was significantly decreased in Y maze tests (t=2.33, P=0.030). Immunohistochemistry results showed microglia and astrocytes were activated in the cortex of experimental mice. Compared with the control group (1.02±0.25, 1.04±0.31), the relative mRNA expressions of Occludin decreased significantly in the meninges and brain of periodontitis mice, respectively (0.61±0.10, 0.64±0.20) (t=3.47, P=0.010; t=2.66, P=0.024). By single-cell RNA sequencing, meninges cells were divided into 11 types, such as endothelial cells, fibroblasts, immune cells and so on. Endothelial cells were the main cell types in meninges [the control group: 26.47% (1 589/6 004), the experimental group: 26.26% (807/3 073)]. Compared with the control group [5.56% (334/6 004)], the percentage of granulocytes increased in the periodontitis mice [11.65% (358/3 073)]. Using clustering analysis to further focus on endothelial cells, GO enrichment analysis revealed differential genes were mainly related to angiogenesis, cell adhesion, apoptosis and so on. KEGG enrichment analysis revealed that differential genes were related to signaling pathways of interleukin-17, relaxin and so on. The relative mRNA expressions of Atf3 and Apold1 in meninges of periodontitis mice (0.42±0.24, 0.54±0.27) were significantly lower than the control group (1.03±0.26, 1.02±0.23) (t=3.88, P=0.005; t=3.02, P=0.017). Conclusions: The mice chronically infected with Pg W83 occurred memory impairment, neuroinflammation and changes of barrier function. In the meninges of periodontitis mice, there were infiltration of immune cells and down-regulation expressions of Atf3 and Apold1 by single-cell RNA sequencing. Meningeal immunity and changes of barrier function may play an important role in the cognitive impairment caused by periodontitis.

Cellulose accessibilities of a set of hornified lignocellulosic substrates derived by drying the never dried pretreated sample and a set of differently pretreated lodgepople pine substrates, were evaluated using solute exclusion and protein adsorption methods. Direct measurements of cellulase adsorption onto cellulose surface of the set of pretreated substrates were also carried out using an in situ UV-Vis spectrophotometric technique. The cellulose accessibilities measured by the solute exclusion and a cellulose-binding module (CBM)-containing green fluorescent protein (TGC) adsorption methods correlate well for both sets of samples. The substrate enzymatic digestibilities (SEDs) of the hornified substrates are proportional to the measured cellulose accessibilities. Approximately over 90% of the SED was contributed by the accessible pore surfaces of the hornified substrates, suggesting that the substrate external surface plays a minor role contributing to cellulose accessibility and SED. The cellulose accessibilities of the pretreated substrates correlated well with the amounts of cellulase adsorbed. The SEDs of these substrates directly correlated with the amounts of adsorbed cellulase.

Objective: To explore the molecular mechanism of cleft palate in mice induced by 2, 3, 7, 8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). Methods: The pregnant mice were randomly divided into TCDD-treated group (n=42) and control group (n=42). TCDD-treated group was given by gavage a single dose of TCDD (64 µg/kg) at 8: 00 AM on gestation day 10 (GD10) and the control group was given by gavage the isopyknic corn oil. At GD13-GD15, the fetal mice palate development was observed by HE staining. The mouse embryonic palatal mesenchymal cell proliferation was detected by 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine (BrdU) immunofluorescence. The localization and expression of maternally expressed gene3 (MEG3) in mouse embryonic palatal mesenchymal cells was detected by situ hybridization and real-time PCR (RT-PCR). The key protein expressions of transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß)/Smad signaling pathway in mouse embryonic palatal mesenchyme were analyzed by Western blotting. The interaction of MEG3 and TGF-ß receptor Ⅰ (TGF-ßRⅠ) was examined by RNA binding protein immunoprecipitation (RIP). Results: At GD13 and GD14, compared with the control group, the ratio of BrdU-positive cells in the palatal mesenchyme of TCDD-treated fetuses decreased significantly (GD13, t=6.66, P=0.003; GD14, t=6.56, P=0.003). However, at GD15, the ratio of BrdU-positive cells was significantly increased (t=-5.98, P=0.004). MEG3 was mainly expressed in the nuclei of fetal mouse palatal mesenchymal cells, and the expression of MEG3 in TCDD group was significantly increased at GD13, GD14 and GD15(GD13, t=39.28, P=0.012; GD14, t=18.75, P=0.042; GD15, t=28.36, P=0.045). At GD14, TCDD decreased the levels of p-Smad2 and Smad4 in embryonic palate mesenchymal cells (p-Smad2, t=9.48, P=0.001;Smad4, t=63.10, P=0.001), whereas the expression of Smad7 was significantly increased at GD14 (t=30.77, P<0.001). The results of the RIP experiment showed that the amount of TGF-ßRⅠ-bound MEG3 in mouse embryonic palatal mesenchymal cells in the TCDD group (23.940±1.301) was higher than that in the control group (8.537±1.523)(t=24.55, P<0.001). Conclusions: MEG3 is involved in the suppression of mouse embryonic palatal mesenchymal cell proliferation, functioning at least in part via interacting with the TGF-ßRⅠ protein and thereby suppressing Smad signaling in the context of TCDD induced cleft palate.

Porphyromonas gingivalis is regarded as one of the risk factors of periodontitis. P. gingivalis exhibits a wide variety of genotypes. Many insertion sequences (ISs), located in their chromosomes, made P. gingivalis differentiate into virulent and avirulent strains. In this research, we investigated the prevalence of P. gingivalis in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) among periodontitis patients from Zhenjiang, China, detected the P. gingivalis rag locus distributions by multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and analyzed the origin of the P. gingivalis rag locus based on evolution. There were three rag locus variants co-existing in Zhenjiang. The results showed that the rag locus may be associated with severe periodontitis. This work also firstly ascertained that the rag locus might arise, in theory, from Bacteroides sp. via horizontal gene transfer.

Neijing Tu(, Chart of Inner Landscape), collected by the Museum of Chinese Medical History, is a colored drawing which is used to guide Taoist internal alchemy training pattern. It belongs to the inheritance of the immortals in the Tao Yin(physical and breathing exercise) of traditional Chinese medicine in folk. It is the essence for nurturing vitality of the traditional Chinese medicine. Its core tenet is that one practices with both Shen(spirit) and Qi(pneuma) and makes both to fuse in perfect harmony way. The specific practice process includes four phases: refining Jing and converting it into Qi, refining Qi and converting it into Shen, extracting and then restoring Xu(void)from Shen, purifying Xu to fit Dao. This process contains the contents of the Secret Alchemy such as sub-Meridian Circle Vessel, overcoming the roadblock and entering Primary Meridian Circle Vessel, getting Yangshen (highest level spirit) and harmonizing the body and spirit. Its important value lies in being able to treat the disease which has not yet completely developed and the disease developed already.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of the sleeve lengths and implant lengths on accuracy of static computer-assisted implant surgery (sCAIS). Methods: Twenty-eight models of bilateral mandibular single tooth loss were included. Fifty-five implants were placed under the guidance of sCAIS (Straumann Bone Level 4.1 mm×10 mm). According to the height of metal sleeve of static guide plate, 55 implants were divided into 11 groups (free hand group, 1 mm group, 2 mm group, 3 mm group, 4 mm group, 5 mm group, 6 mm group, 7 mm group, 8 mm group, 9 mm group, 10 mm group), with 5 implants in each group. Eight research models were included. Group with 5 mm sleeve guides were used to place implants of different length, (Straumann Bone Level width 4.1 mm, height was 8 mm, 10 mm and 14 mm), 5 implants in each group. Eighteen patients with mandibular single tooth loss were included in the Department of Oral Implantology, Tianjin Stomatological Hospital from October 2018 to June 2019. There were 10 males and 8 females, 18-46(33.7±7.9) years old. A total of 18 implants were implanted and divided into 3 groups (free hand group, 3 mm group and 5 mm group) with 6 implants in each group. Digital software was used to compare the implant positions before and after implantation. Non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test or one-way ANOVA were used to analyze the results. Results: There was no significant difference in implant vertical deviation between different sleeve height groups (1-10 mm) and free hand group, but the neck deviation in free hand group[(1.04±0.13) mm] was significantly higher than that in different sleeve height groups (1-10 mm) (P<0.05). The tip deviations of free hand group, 1 mm group and 2 mm group [(1.32±0.43), (0.83±0.10) and (0.78±0.11) mm, respectively] was significantly higher than that of 10 mm group [(0.31±0.14) mm](P<0.05). The angle deviation of free hand group and 1 mm group (3.99°±0.85° and 2.59°±0.69°), respectively] was significantly higher than that of 10 mm group (0.61°±0.03°) (P<0.05). The tip deviations of implants in the 14 mm group [(0.83±0.22) mm] was significantly higher than that in the 8 mm and 10 mm groups [(0.44±0.07) and (0.49±0.06) mm, respectively]. Clinical studies showed that there was no significant difference in neck deviation, tip deviation and angle deviation between 3 mm group and 5 mm group (P>0.05), but deviations were significantly lower than those in free hand group (P<0.05). Conclusions: The length of the sleeves has significant influence on the accuracy of the surgical guide. There was no significant difference in accuracy of the implant guide with 3 mm or 5 mm metal sleeves. The vitro study has some limitations and needs further systematic research.

ß-type Ti-35Nb-7Zr alloy has attracted considerable attentions as a bone implant material. The alloy, however, has poor bioactivity, which difficult to form a strong osseointegration between the bone tissues. Combining Ti alloy with a bioactive and biodegradable ceramic has been of interest to researchers. But the large difference in physicochemical property of high-melting metal and ceramic elements would bring the manufacturing restriction. In this work, Ti-35Nb-7Zr-CPP composites were fabricated with mechanical alloy of Ti, Nb, Zr and Nano calcium pyrophosphate (CPP) powders mixture followed by spark plasma sintering (SPS) routes. The effect of CPP ceramic on microstructural evolution and in vitro biocompatibility were investigated. As the addition of CPP (10-30 wt%), ceramic elements spreading towards the matrix, the generated metal-ceramic bioactive phases CaTiO3 are observed well consolidated with ß-Ti matrix. With the CPP increasing, Ca and P atoms rapidly migrated to the ß-Ti matrix to form granulated Ti5P3, which leads to the increasing porosity (10%-18%) in the composites. The results demonstrated that the favorable cell viability (the cell proliferation rates were higher than 100%) and growth inside the pores of the composites arise from the rough micro-porous surface and the release of bioactive metal-ceramic phase ions into the biological environment. The enhanced bioactivity and microstructural evolution behaviors of the Ti-35Nb-7Zr-CPP composites may provide a strategy for designing and fabricating multifunctional implants.

In this work, interconnected porous Ti-HA biocomposites with enhanced bioactivity, high porosity and compressive strength were prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) and space holder method. Pore characteristics, mechanical properties, corrosion behaviors and in vitro bioactivity of the porous Ti-HA were investigated. Results showed that porous Ti-HA with 5-30wt% HA contents possessed not only low elastic modulus of 8.2-15.8GPa (close to that of human bone) but also high compressive strength (86-388MPa). Although the HA partially decomposed and formed secondary phases, the sintered porous Ti-HA can still be good bioactivity. The homogeneity and the thickness of apatite layer increased significantly with the increase of HA. But with the thickness of apatite layer increased, micro-cracks appeared on the surface of porous Ti-30%HA. A model was built to discuss the current distribution and sintering mechanism of HA on Ti matrix during SPS process. It indicated that the excessive addition of HA would deteriorate the sintering quality, thus decreasing the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. However, the combination of interconnected pore characteristics, low elastic modulus, high compressive strength and enhanced bioactivity might make porous Ti-HA biocomposites prepared by SPS a promising candidate for hard tissue implants.

Nanocarriers delivering prodrugs are a way of improving in vivo effectiveness and efficiency. For therapeutic efficacy, the prodrug must hydrolyze to its parent drug after administration. Based on the fact that the hydrolysis is impeded by steric hindrance and improved by sufficient polarity, in this study, we proposed the PTX-S-S-VE, the conjugation of paclitaxel (PTX) to vitamin E (VE) through a disulfide bridge. This conjugate possessed the following advantages: first, it can be encapsulated in the VE/VE2-PEG2000/water nanoemulsions because of favorable hydrophobic interactions; second, the nanoemulsions had a long blood circulation time; finally, the concentrated glutathione in the tumor microenvironment could cleave the disulfide bond to weaken the steric hindrance and increase the polarity, promoting the hydrolysis to PTX and increasing the anticancer activity. It was demonstrated in vitro that the hydrolysis of PTX-S-S-VE was enhanced and the cytotoxicity was increased. In addition, PTX-S-S-VE had greater anticancer activity against the KB-3-1 cell line tumor xenograft and the tumor size was smaller after the 4(th) injection. The present result suggests a new way, use of reduction, to improve the in vivo anticancer activity of a prodrug for nanocarrier delivery by unshielding the ester bond and taking off the steric block.

RESUMO

Brandisia hancei is a medicinal herb in China. The ethanol extract of this plant and four phenylethanoid glycosides, acteoside (1), 2'-acetylacteoside (2), poliumoside (3) and brandioside (4), isolated from it were shown to have inhibitory effects on free radical-induced hemolysis of red blood cells and free radical scavenging activities in vitro. Brandioside (4) and poliumoside (3) showed stronger antioxidant effect than acteoside (1), 2'-acetylacteoside (2) and trolox.

Seven hundred fifty-nine cases of odontogenic tumors retrieved from the files of College of Stomatology, West China University of Medical Sciences were classified according to the World Health Organization's Histological Classification of Odontogenic Tumors and compared with similar reports from other countries. Among these cases, 93.9% of the tumors were benign and 6.1% were malignant. Ameloblastomas predominated (58.6%) with a predilection for the mandible, while odontomas, generally regarded as the most frequent odontogenic tumor in North America, only accounted for 6.7%, the fourth most common tumor in this series. The mandible and the maxilla were divided into eight anatomic regions, and the distribution of each odontogenic tumor type amongst these regions was recorded. The relative incidence of each tumor type, patient age and gender were also compared with data from other selected large series. Geographic differences were noted in the relative incidence of ameloblastoma, odontoma and malignant odontogenic tumors among the Chinese/African, North American and Turkish/German groups. Ameloblastoma and malignant odontogenic tumors are not considered rare in a Chinese population.

AIM: To study the release mechanism of fenoprofen calcium (FC) from hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) matrices. METHODS: The release of FC and the erosion properties of hydrophillic matrices containing HPMC was examined at different paddle speed. The release mechanism of FC was further confirmed by evaluating the n value in Peppas equation. RESULTS: The results indicate that the release of FC and the erosion of matrices exhibit zero order kinetic equation, and it exhibits line relationship between them. CONCLUSION: In the first 40 min, FC mainly released by diffusion and erosion from HPMC matrix, while it was controlled by the rate of tablet erosion after 50 min.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of expanded cervical-shoulder skin flap in the treatment of cicatricial contracture deformity of neck, and improve the method for the repair of soft tissue defect of neck. METHOD: 12 patients with cicatricial contracture of neck were treated by pre-expanded cervical-shoulder skin flap and then transposition for the reconstruction of the defect after cervical scar resection. RESULT: All the 24 flaps were survived. Postoperative follow-up for 6 months to one year showed that the cervico-mandibular function and the external appearance of the flaps were satisfactory without swelling and contracture. CONCLUSION: Pre-expanded cervical-shoulder skin flap is available for the treatment of cicatricial contracture deformity of neck.

Self-assembled amphiphilic graft copolymers in aqueous solution to form polymeric micelles, have received growing scientific attention over the years. Among the polymeric micelles, hydrophobicized polysaccharides have currently become one of the hottest researches in the field of drug delivery nanosystems. It is attributable to such appealing properties as small particle size and narrow size distribution, distinctive core-shell structure, high solubilization capacity and structural stability, tumor passive localization by enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect, active targeting ability via tailored targeting promoiety, long-circulation property and facile preparation. The polymeric micelles self-assembled by hydrophobicized polysaccharides can be employed as targeted drug delivery nanosystem by including thermo- or pH-sensitive components or by attaching specific targeted moieties to the outer hydrophilic surface. Beside encapsulation of water-insoluble drugs, hydrophobicized polysaccharide polymeric micelles can complex with charged proteins or peptide drugs through electrostatic force or hydrogen bond, and serve as an effective non-viral vector for gene delivery. In the latter case, polymeric micelles can not only markedly protect these macromolecules from degradation by protease or ribozymes, but also increase the gene transfection efficiency. This review will highlight the state of the art self-assembled mechanism, characterization, preparation methods and surface modification of hydrophobicized polysaccharide polymeric micelles and their recent rapid applications as drug delivery nanosystems.

This study evaluated the periodontal responses and progesterone changes to orthodontic tooth movements in pregnant rats. Adult female Sprague-Dawley rats were separated into two groups: non-pregnant and pregnant. All rats were treated with fixed orthodontic appliances that moved the upper incisors in a distal direction during 10 days. At the end of the experiment, the periodontal tissues were examined histologically and immunohistochemically (ABC method). The results showed that in the histological examination of the tension sides of the upper incisors, the bone formation was more obvious in the pregnant group than that in the non-pregnant group. In the immunohistochemical staining, the osteoblasts were positive-stained cells and they exhibited deeper stain and higher percentage in the pregnant group. In a conclusion, the progesterone influences the periodontal reconstruction on orthodontic tooth movements in pregnant rats and may be helpful in alveolar bone formation, which suggests that orthodontic treatments in pregnant patients may not be so harmful as people thought before.
