BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The biological effects of atmospheric plasma (cold plasma) show its applicability for controlling the etiological factors that involve tissue repair. Thus, the study evaluated the effect of atmospheric plasma therapy in the control of tissue inflammation and bone remodeling in experimental periodontitis. METHODS: Fifty-six rats were subjected to ligation in the cervical region of the first maxillary molars (8 weeks). The animals were divided into two groups (n = 28): periodontitis without treatment group (P group), and periodontitis with atmospheric plasma treatment group (P + AP group). Tissue samples were collected at 2 and 4 weeks after treatment to analyze the inflammation and bone remodeling by biochemical, histomorphometric, and immunohistochemical analyses. RESULTS: Inflammatory infiltration in the gingival and periodontal ligament was lower in the P + AP group than in the P group (p < .05). The MPO and NAG levels were higher in the P + AP group compared to P group (p < .05). At 4 weeks, the TNF-α level was lower and the IL-10 level was higher in the P + AP group compared to P group (p < .05). In the P + AP group, the IL-1ß level increased in the second week and decreased in the fourth week (p < .05), the number of blood vessels was high in the gingival and periodontal ligament in the second and fourth week (p < .05); and the number of fibroblasts in the gingival tissue was low in the fourth week, and higher in the periodontal tissue in both period (p < .05). Regarding bone remodeling, the RANK and RANKL levels decreased in the P + AP group (p < .05). The OPG level did not differ between the P and P + AP groups (p > .05), but decreased from the second to the fourth experimental week in P + AP group (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS: The treatment of experimental periodontitis with atmospheric plasma for 4 weeks modulated the inflammatory response to favor the repair process and decreased the bone resorption biomarkers, indicating a better control of bone remodeling in periodontal disease.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the estrogen depression during orthodontic tooth movement on alveolar bone microarchitecture and periodontal ligament. Female Wistar rats were divided into two groups, one consisting of non-ovariectomized animals subjected to orthodontic tooth movement, and one comprising ovariectomized animals subjected to orthodontic tooth movement. Micro-CT assessment of bone volume to total volume (BV/TV), total porosity, trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), trabecular number (Tb.N), and trabecular separation (Tb.Sp) in the alveolar bone of the orthodontically moved tooth was performed. Histomorphometric analyses were made in the periodontal ligament, and immunoexpression of RANK, RANKL, OPG, and TUNEL were quantified. Orthodontic tooth movement in the group of ovariectomized rats was faster than in non-ovariectomized animals. The alveolar bone area showed lower values of BV/TV and trabecular thickness, and higher bone porosity and trabeculae numbers in the ovariectomized rats. Histological analyses in the ovariectomized group revealed an increase in collagen fibers in the periodontal ligament. The apoptotic cell counts in the periodontal ligament were higher in the group of ovariectomized rats than in the sham-operated rats. Ovariectomy resulted in an increase in tooth movement and alteration of the alveolar bone microstructure in the first 7 day of orthodontic tooth movement, and in the presence of apoptotic cells in the periodontal ligament.

BACKGROUND: To access the occurrence of bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis of the jaw (BAONJ) in individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Observational studies that evaluated the occurrence of BAONJ in individuals with RA (BAONJ-RA) were considered for inclusion. Electronic searches were performed up to December 2022 in six databases and in the grey literature. The study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment of the included studies according to the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklists was performed. The certainty of evidence was evaluated using the GRADE approach. RESULTS: Five studies were included three cohort and two cross-sectional. The sample size of subjects with RA ranged from 16 to 3201. Together, the studies presented 36 cases of BAONJ-RA. Prevalence of BAONJ-RA ranged from 0.094% to 56.25%. The incidence ranged from 0.4% to 2.21. Women between the 6th and 8th decade of life were the most affected. Alendronate (n=5) and zoledronic acid (n=9), orally and intravenously, respectively, were the most used bisphosphonates. The duration of bisphosphonates use ranged from 2.7 to 8 years. The certainty of evidence was very low. CONCLUSIONS: The occurrence of BAONJ-RA is low. However, the certainty of the evidence was very low for this outcome.

BACKGROUND: Mixed dentition determines an important period of occlusion development in childhood. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the aesthetic impact of the midline diastema cut-off point in mixed dentition. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was performed with 257 children aged 8-10 years in late mixed dentition, with midline diastema of 1-5 mm and normal maxillary overjet. Orthodontic Aesthetic Subjective Impact Score determined the aesthetic impact of the midline diastema. Four quartiles of diastema measurements and impact scores were considered as cut-off points. Receiver Operating Characteristic curves were constructed, and the distances representing the distances to the ideal point were calculated. The Yuden index determined the efficiency of measuring the diastema to assess the aesthetic impact. The Kruskal-Wallis test compared the groups of participants classified according to the diastema cut-off by the sample quartile regarding the impact score. The analyses were performed with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the four groups of measurement quartiles of the diastema regarding the aesthetic impact (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS: The perception of dental aesthetics in mixed dentition children was not affected by the midline diastema, regardless of the cut-off point.

OBJECTIVE: Herein, we evaluated pinealectomy-induced melatonin absence to determine its effects on craniofacial and dental development in the offspring. DESIGN: Female Wistar rats in three groups, i.e., intact pregnant rats, pinealectomized pregnant rats (PINX), and pinealectomized pregnant rats subjected to oral melatonin replacement therapy, were crossed 30 days after surgery. The heads of 7-day-old pups were harvested for cephalometric and histological analyses, and maxillae and incisors were collected for mRNA expression analysis. RESULTS: The PINX pups exhibited a reduction in neurocranial and facial parameters such as a decrease in alveolar bone area, incisor size and proliferation, and an increase in odontoblasts and the dentin layer. Based on incisor mRNA expression analysis, we found that Dmp1 expression was upregulated, whereas Col1a1 expression was downregulated. Maxillary mRNA expression revealed that Rankl expression was upregulated, whereas that of Opn and Osx was downregulated. CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrated that the absence of maternal melatonin during early life could affect dental and maxillary development in offspring, as well as delay odontogenesis and osteogenesis in maxillary tissues. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Our findings suggest that disruptions or a lack of melatonin during pregnancy may cause changes in craniofacial and dental development, at least in animal experiments; however, in humans, these feedings are still poorly understood, and thus careful evaluations of melatonin levels in humans need to be investigated in craniofacial alterations.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the microbiological profile of root canals indicated for endodontic retreatment due to secondary endodontic infections evidenced by the presence of chronic apical periodontitis (G1) or for prosthetic reasons, without clinical and radiographic signs of endodontic reinfection (G2). METHODS: Microbiological samples were collected from thirty teeth (N=30) out of which 15 were indicated for retreatment due to the presence of chronic apical periodontitis (G1) and 15 were indicated exclusively for prosthetic reasons (G2). Samples were collected from root canals before (S1), after chemomechanical preparation (S2), and after 30 days of intracanal medication composed of calcium hydroxide and 2% chlorhexidine gel (S3). The molecular analysis was performed using Nested-PCR for the detection of 17 bacterial species. The efficacy of each stage of the retreatment in reducing the microbial load was verified by counting colony-forming units (CFU). The statistical analysis considered a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: The results showed that bacteria were detected in 100% of the cases in S1, in both groups, by Nested PCR. The most frequently found species in S1 in both groups were Enterococcus faecalis, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, and Parvimonas micra. The microbial load of G1 was higher than G2 in the initial samples (S1). Endodontic retreatment was effective in reducing the microbial load in G1 and G2. Statistically significant associations were found between specific bacteria and clinical signs and symptoms. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that the microbial community present in the root canal of teeth indicated for endodontic retreatment is mixed and heterogeneous. G1 and G2 differ in the number of species per case and microbial load. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Endodontic retreatment was effective in reducing the microbial load. Statistically significant associations were found between specific bacteria and clinical signs and symptoms.

This study characterized TiO2 nanotube (TiO2-nt) ultrastructure and morphology, and the physicochemical impact on high-viscosity conventional glass-ionomer cement (GIC). TiO2-nt was synthesized by the alkaline method (n = 3), assessed by scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM), and was added (3%, 5%, 7%-in weight) to KM (Ketac Molar EasyMix™). Analyses included: SEM; Energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS); Raman spectroscopy (RAMAN); Setting time with Gillmore needles (ST); Color (Co); Radiopacity (XR); Water sorption (WS); and solubility (SO). Quantitative data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's tests (chr = 0.05). External and internal TiO2-nt diameters were 11 ± 2 nm and 6 ± 0 nm, respectively. Data analyses showed: (i) TiO2-nt present into KM matrix, with a concentration-dependent increase of Ti levels into KM, (ii) physical interaction between KM and TiO2-nt, (iii) longer initial ST for the 7% group compared to KM and 3% groups (p ≤ 0.01), (iv) decreased luminosity and yellowness for the 5% and 7% groups, (v) 36% greater radiopacity for the 5% group compared to enamel, dentin, and KM, and (vi) lower SO values for the 5% group, with no significant differences on WS across the groups. TiO2-nt displayed physical interaction with KM matrix, and also modified SO, XR and Co, without affecting ST. This study provides information on the potential impact of TiO2-nt on GIC performance. TiO2-nt may be proposed to boost confidence among dental surgeons in terms of GIC's handling characteristics, success rate and differential diagnostic.

Clinically, most patients with poor wound healing suffer from generalized skin damage, usually accompanied by other complications, so developing therapeutic strategies for difficult wound healing has remained extremely challenging until now. Current studies have indicated that electrical stimulation (ES) to cutaneous lesions enhances skin regeneration by activating intracellular signaling cascades and secreting skin regeneration-related cytokine. In this study, we designed different concentrations of graphene in gelatin-methacrylate (GelMa) to form the conductive composite commonly used in wound healing because of its efficiency compared to other conductive thermo-elastic materials. The results demonstrated the successful addition of graphene to GelMa while retaining the original physicochemical properties of the GelMa bioink. In addition, the incorporation of graphene increased the interactions between these two biomaterials, leading to an increase in mechanical properties, improvement in the swelling ratio, and the regulation of degradation characteristics of the biocomposite scaffolds. Moreover, the scaffolds exhibited excellent electrical conductivity, increasing proliferation and wound healing-related growth factor secretion from human dermal fibroblasts. Overall, the HDF-laden 3D electroconductive GelMa/graphene-based hydrogels developed in this study are ideal biomaterials for skin regeneration applications in the future.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic deep neck infections remain a common condition that presents a challenging issue due to the complex involvement of the neck and adjacent structures and its potential life-threatening risk. Periapical infection of the second or third molar with spread to the submandibular and parapharyngeal spaces is the most commonly observed scenario. However, the time of dental extraction of the infection focus remains controversial. The aim of this study is to provide an overview of the epidemiology, clinical and radiological features, and management in patients diagnosed with ODNI and to identify the role of early dental extraction on patient outcomes and recovery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study included patients over 18 years old with a diagnosis of ODNI who were admitted to the University Hospital "Dr Jose Eleuterio Gonzalez" from January 2017 to January 2022. ODNI diagnosis was based on clinical and radiological evidence of the disease supplemented by dental and maxillofacial evaluation for an odontogenic aetiology. RESULTS: A total of 68 patients were included in the study. The patients' mean age was 40.96 ± 14.9. Diabetes mellitus was the most common comorbidity. The submandibular space was the most common deep neck space involved (n=59, 86.8%). Mediastinitis, marginal nerve injury and orocervical fistula were observed in 7.5% of patients, with no fatality in this series. A delay of >3 days for dental extraction of the involved tooth was associated with an increased rate of mediastinitis (n=3, 100%, p= 0.022), number of surgical interventions (1.45 ± 0.61, p= 0.006), ICU stay (n=8, 40%, p= 0.019), and ICU length of stay (0.85 ± 0.8, p= 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Expedited management with surgical drainage and intravenous antibiotic treatment, along with early extraction of the involved tooth, is mandatory.

Nutritional restriction during developmental periods impairs organ physiology. Female rats were subjected to protein restriction during pregnancy and lactation to analyze dental and maxillary development. Four exposure groups were considered: normal-protein diet during pregnancy and lactation (NP, 17% casein), low-protein diet during lactation (LP-L, 6% casein), low-protein diet during pregnancy and lactation (LP), and low-protein diet during pregnancy (LP-G). Maxillae from 15-day-old male pups were collected. All protein-restricted groups presented increased dentin thickness and reduced alveolar bone area. When protein restriction was applied during both gestation and lactation (LP), harmful effects were observed in the form of loss of protective OPG (osteoprotegerin) in tooth epithelium-mesenchyme, due to higher RANKL expression, delay in odontoblast maturation, less dental pulp vascularity, reduction in amount of alveolar bone, and less matrix mineralization. In the LP-L group, effects of protein restriction seemed less harmful, and despite less alveolar bone, the enhancement in BMP-7, VEGF, and RANKL seems a compensatory signal to maintain maxillary osteogenesis. In LP-G animals, Dspp expression was higher, suggesting a delay in odontoblast maturation or expression recuperation. In conclusion, maternal protein restriction affects dental and maxillary development. A low-protein diet only in gestation allows for normal development. A low-protein diet during gestation-lactation results in impaired odontogenesis that may increase susceptibility of dental anomalies.

OBJECTIVES: The imbalanced host response in front of a dysbiotic biofilm is one of the major aspects of severe periodontitis, which also presents a strong familial aggregation related to the susceptibility factors transmission within family members. This study hypothesized that aggressive periodontitis (GAgP) patients and their descendants could present a similar trend of a local inflammatory response that is different from healthy controls. METHODS: Fifteen GAgP subjects and their children and fifteen healthy subjects and their children were clinically assessed, and the concentration of interferon (IFN)-γ, interleukin (IL)-10, IL-17, IL-1ß, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α was evaluated in the gingival fluid using the multiplexed bead immunoassay. RESULTS: Children from the GAgP group presented lower IL-10 and IFN-γ subgingival concentration than Health children, despite no difference in the clinical parameters. GAgP parents showed a lower IFN-γ, IL-10, and IL-6 than healthy subjects. IL-10/IL-1ß and IFN-γ/IL-4 ratios were reduced in GAgP dyads, suggesting a familial trend in the subgingival cytokine's profile. The cytokines correlated to the clinical data and were predictors of probing depth increase. CONCLUSION: GAgP parents and their children presented a similar cytokine profile and an imbalance in the subgingival response characterized by decreased IFN-γ/IL-4 and IL10/IL-1ß ratios.

A defining feature of chordates is the unique presence of a dorsal hollow neural tube that forms by internalization of the ectodermal neural plate specified via inhibition of BMP signaling during gastrulation. While BMP controls dorsoventral (DV) patterning across diverse bilaterians, the BMP-active side is ventral in chordates and dorsal in many other bilaterians. How this phylum-specific DV inversion occurs and whether it is coupled to the emergence of the dorsal neural plate are unknown. Here we explore these questions by investigating an indirect-developing enteropneust from the hemichordate phylum, which together with echinoderms form a sister group of the chordates. We found that in the hemichordate larva, BMP signaling is required for DV patterning and is sufficient to repress neurogenesis. We also found that transient overactivation of BMP signaling during gastrulation concomitantly blocked mouth formation and centralized the nervous system to the ventral ectoderm in both hemichordate and sea urchin larvae. Moreover, this mouthless, neurogenic ventral ectoderm displayed a medial-to-lateral organization similar to that of the chordate neural plate. Thus, indirect-developing deuterostomes use BMP signaling in DV and neural patterning, and an elevated BMP level during gastrulation drives pronounced morphological changes reminiscent of a DV inversion. These findings provide a mechanistic basis to support the hypothesis that an inverse chordate body plan emerged from an indirect-developing ancestor by tinkering with BMP signaling.

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to describe the anatomical characteristics of the nasolacrimal duct of Persian cats as observed by computed tomographic dacryocystography. ANIMAL STUDIED: Ten cats weighing 3-6 kg (three live cats and seven cadaveric specimens). PROCEDURES: The animals were submitted to bilateral computed tomographic dacryocystography, totaling 20 nasolacrimal ducts. Dorsal, sagittal, and transverse planes were studied. Two additional skulls were also dissected following latex injection into the nasolacrimal duct. The length and width of the nasolacrimal duct and lacrimal canaliculi, and the distance between the nasolacrimal duct and the root of the upper canine tooth at the point of closest proximity were measured. RESULTS: The nasolacrimal duct followed a convoluted course, particularly in the middle and rostral portions. Duct stenosis (width reduction equal to or >75%) and dilations (width increase equal to or >50%) were also detected, particularly in the rostral portion. Nasolacrimal duct length and width ranged from 1.3 to 1.5 cm and 1.5 to 2.3 mm, respectively. Mean lacrimal canaliculus length and width corresponded to 3.1 mm and 0.4 mm, respectively. Mean distance from the nasolacrimal duct to the canine tooth was 2.4 mm. The root of this tooth interfered with the course of the nasolacrimal duct. CONCLUSION: This study provided anatomical information for clinical assessment of the nasolacrimal drainage system in Persian cats.

ABSTRACT: Clinical T4b oral squamous cell carcinoma is traditionally considered nonoperable. We present a case of right mandibular squamous cell carcinoma (PT4bN0M0, stage IVB). The tumor had extended to the right mandibular condylar head and masticatory space. The patient received right modified radical neck dissection and radical operation with hemimandibulectomy to remove the right mandibular condyle. Then, we reconstructed the resected portion with an anterior lateral thigh free flap and bridging plate, which was bent to form an artificial condyle and fixed using the modified Dautrey procedure. The patient had stable postoperative occlusion and normal hinge movement of the temporomandibular joint. After postoperative concurrent chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the patient is under regular out patient department follow-up with satisfactory jaw function and oral intake.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of growth hormone (GH) on endosteal implant's surface at the early stages of osseointegration. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty tapered acid-etched titanium implants were divided into four groups: i) Collagen, used as a control group; and three experimental groups, where after collagen coating, GH was administered directly to the surface in varying concentrations: ii) 0.265 mg, iii) 0.53 mg, and iv) 1 mg. Implants were placed in an interpolated fashion in the anterior flange of C3, C4 or C5 of 15 sheep with minimum distance of 6 mm between implants. After 3-, 6- and 12-weeks of healing samples were harvested, histologically processed, qualitatively and quantitatively assessed for bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and bone area fraction occupancy (BAFO). RESULTS: Statistical analysis as a function of time in vivo and coating resulted in no significant differences for BIC and BAFO at any evaluation time point. Histological evaluation demonstrated similar osseointegration features for all groups with woven bone formation at 3 weeks and progressive replacement of woven for lamellar bone in close contact with the implant surface and within the implant's threads. CONCLUSIONS: A single local application of growth hormone to the surface of titanium implants did not yield improved implant osseointegration independent of healing time.

Matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) is associated with many types of cancers, including oral, colorectal, and brain cancers. This paper describes the fabrication of an MMP-1 immunosensor based on a gold nanoparticle/polyethyleneimine/reduced graphene oxide (AuNP/PEI/rGO)-modified disposable screen-printed electrode (SPE). A microwave-assisted single-step method was employed for the simultaneous reduction of gold and graphene oxide in a PEI environment to avoid AuNP agglomeration. The crystal structure, chemical composition, optical properties, and interior morphology of the materials were probed by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, UV-visible spectrometry, and transmission electron microscopy techniques. To assemble a label-free MMP-1 immunosensor layer-by-layer, 3-mercaptopropionic acid was utilized due to its strong sulfur-gold bonding ability, and its tail end was attached to a carboxyl group, allowing the MMP-1 antibody (anti-MMP-1) to be subsequently cross-linked using the traditional N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) and N' ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride method. Differential pulse voltammetry analysis showed a linear relationship with MMP-1 concentration in the range of 1-50 ng ml-1 with an R2 value of ∼0.996 (n = 5, RSD < 5%). This immunosensor was successfully applied for MMP-1 detection in urine, saliva, bovine serum, and cell culture media (HSC-3 & C6) of oral and brain cancers showing results comparable to those of the credible ELISA method.

BACKGROUND: Alveolar bone changes following tooth extraction can compromise prosthodontic rehabilitation. Alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) has been proposed to limit these changes and improve prosthodontic and aesthetic outcomes when implants are used. This is an update of the Cochrane Review first published in 2015. OBJECTIVES: To assess the clinical effects of various materials and techniques for ARP after tooth extraction compared with extraction alone or other methods of ARP, or both, in patients requiring dental implant placement following healing of extraction sockets. SEARCH METHODS: Cochrane Oral Health's Information Specialist searched the following databases: Cochrane Oral Health's Trials Register (to 19 March 2021), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (the Cochrane Library 2021, Issue 2), MEDLINE Ovid (1946 to 19 March 2021), Embase Ovid (1980 to 19 March 2021), Latin American and Caribbean Health Science Information database (1982 to 19 March 2021), Web of Science Conference Proceedings (1990 to 19 March 2021), Scopus (1966 to 19 March 2021), ProQuest Dissertations and Theses (1861 to 19 March 2021), and OpenGrey (to 19 March 2021). The US National Institutes of Health Ongoing Trials Register (ClinicalTrials.gov) and the World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform were searched for ongoing trials. No restrictions were placed on the language or date of publication when searching the electronic databases. A number of journals were also handsearched. SELECTION CRITERIA: We included all randomised controlled trials (RCTs) on the use of ARP techniques with at least six months of follow-up. Outcome measures were: changes in the bucco-lingual/palatal width of alveolar ridge, changes in the vertical height of the alveolar ridge, complications, the need for additional augmentation prior to implant placement, aesthetic outcomes, implant failure rates, peri-implant marginal bone level changes, changes in probing depths and clinical attachment levels at teeth adjacent to the extraction site, and complications of future prosthodontic rehabilitation. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: We selected trials, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias in duplicate. Corresponding authors were contacted to obtain missing information. We estimated mean differences (MD) for continuous outcomes and risk ratios (RR) for dichotomous outcomes, with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). We constructed 'Summary of findings' tables to present the main findings and assessed the certainty of the evidence using GRADE. MAIN RESULTS: We included 16 RCTs conducted worldwide involving a total of 524 extraction sites in 426 adult participants. We assessed four trials as at overall high risk of bias and the remaining trials at unclear risk of bias. Nine new trials were included in this update with six new trials in the category of comparing ARP to extraction alone and three new trials in the category of comparing different grafting materials. ARP versus extraction: from the seven trials comparing xenografts with extraction alone, there is very low-certainty evidence of a reduction in loss of alveolar ridge width (MD -1.18 mm, 95% CI -1.82 to -0.54; P = 0.0003; 6 studies, 184 participants, 201 extraction sites), and height (MD -1.35 mm, 95% CI -2.00 to -0.70; P < 0.0001; 6 studies, 184 participants, 201 extraction sites) in favour of xenografts, but we found no evidence of a significant difference for the need for additional augmentation (RR 0.68, 95% CI 0.29 to 1.62; P = 0.39; 4 studies, 154 participants, 156 extraction sites; very low-certainty evidence) or in implant failure rate (RR 1.00, 95% CI 0.07 to 14.90; 2 studies, 70 participants/extraction sites; very low-certainty evidence). From the one trial comparing alloplasts versus extraction, there is very low-certainty evidence of a reduction in loss of alveolar ridge height (MD -3.73 mm; 95% CI -4.05 to -3.41; 1 study, 15 participants, 60 extraction sites) in favour of alloplasts. This single trial did not report any other outcomes. Different grafting materials for ARP: three trials (87 participants/extraction sites) compared allograft versus xenograft, two trials (37 participants, 55 extraction sites) compared alloplast versus xenograft, one trial (20 participants/extraction sites) compared alloplast with and without membrane, one trial (18 participants, 36 extraction sites) compared allograft with and without synthetic cell-binding peptide P-15, and one trial (30 participants/extraction sites) compared alloplast with different particle sizes. The evidence was of very low certainty for most comparisons and insufficient to determine whether there are clinically significant differences between different ARP techniques based on changes in alveolar ridge width and height, the need for additional augmentation prior to implant placement, or implant failure. We found no trials which evaluated parameters relating to clinical attachment levels, specific aesthetic or prosthodontic outcomes for any of the comparisons. No serious adverse events were reported with most trials indicating that the procedure was uneventful. Among the complications reported were delayed healing with partial exposure of the buccal plate at suture removal, postoperative pain and swelling, moderate glazing, redness and oedema, membrane exposure and partial loss of grafting material, and fibrous adhesions at the cervical part of previously preserved sockets, for the comparisons xenografts versus extraction, allografts versus xenografts, alloplasts versus xenografts, and alloplasts with and without membrane. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: ARP techniques may minimise the overall changes in residual ridge height and width six months after extraction but the evidence is very uncertain. There is lack of evidence of any differences in the need for additional augmentation at the time of implant placement, implant failure, aesthetic outcomes, or any other clinical parameters due to lack of information or long-term data. There is no evidence of any clinically significant difference between different grafting materials and barriers used for ARP. Further long-term RCTs that follow CONSORT guidelines (www.consort-statement.org) are necessary.

The aim of this work was to investigate the involvement of substance P (SP), osteopontin (OPN), and satellite glial cells (SGC) on photobiomodulation-induced (PBM) antinociceptive effect in an experimental model of dentin hypersensitivity (DH). Rats ingested isotonic drink (ID, pH 2.87) for 45 consecutive days and after this period received PBM irradiation at λ660 nm or λ808 nm (1 J, 3.5 J/cm2, 100 mW, 10 s, 0.028 cm2, continuous wave, 3 consecutive daily sessions), and were evaluated for nociceptive behavior 24, 48, 72 h, and 14 days after laser treatments. ID ingestion induced an increase on thermal sensitivity of DH characteristics in rats that was completely reversed by PBM treatment at both 660 and 808 nm. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed increased SP expression at both dentin-pulp complex (DPC) and trigeminal ganglia (TG) of DH-rats which did not occur in PBM groups by PBM treatment. Also, the increase of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) observed in the TG of DH-rats was also reversed by PBM treatment. Finally, PBM at both 660 and 808 nm increased OPN expression in the dentin-pulp complex of DH-rats after 14 days of PBM treatment. All in all, this data demonstrates that PBM reverses nociception in a DH experimental model by inhibiting neurogenic inflammation and inducing a regenerative response.

Diabetes mellitus impairs angiogenesis and tissue reorganization during orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). Thus, this study evaluated pulpal outcomes in orthodontic tooth movement through metabolic changes in diabetes. Male Wistar rats were used, and the in vivo study design consisted of four groups (n = 10/group): C-non-diabetic animals not subjected to orthodontic tooth movement; D-diabetic animals not subjected to orthodontic tooth movement; OTM-non-diabetic animals subjected to orthodontic tooth movement; and D + OTM-diabetic animals subjected to orthodontic tooth movement. In addition, the pulps of the distovestibular root (DV) and mesiovestibular root (MV) were assessed by histomorphometric analyses and immunoexpression of the RANKL/OPG system. Pulpal analysis of the MV root showed an increase in blood vessels in diabetic animals. Inflammatory infiltrate and fibroblastic cells were elevated in diabetic animals with tooth movement in the DV and MV roots. In the DV and MV roots, diabetic rats with OTM showed a reduction in birefringent collagen fibers. The immunostaining for RANKL was higher in the pulp tissue of OTM in diabetic and non-diabetic animals. It was concluded that the pulp tissue has less adaptive and repair capacity during OTM in diabetes. Orthodontic strength can alter the inflammatory processes in the pulp.

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the epidemiological profile, oral health self-perception index, and level of satisfaction of users of complete implant-supported overdentures that had been used for at least 1 year and were made at the School of Dentistry of the University of Passo Fundo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (FO/UPF), between 2014 and 2019. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 30 patients with overdentures, who were selected from the dental records filed at the institution. Data on general health and the dental implants involved (brand, type of prosthetic connection, number of implants, and additional overdenture retention system) were collected from the medical records. The 30 patients were invited to answer the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) and visual analog scale (VAS) questionnaires, and due to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, it was possible to contact 15 patients. RESULTS: Most of the prostheses studied were mandibular overdentures, and 66.66% of the cases were retained by the O-ring system. As for the oral health self-perception of the individuals, it was concluded that male patients had a lower mean overall score (p = 0.047) and functional domain (p = 0.042) in the OHIP-14. The number of implants and the installation arch interfered with functional domain and psychological capacity (p <0.05). The VAS showed that women have greater esthetic satisfaction with prostheses (p = 0.048) and that the bar-clip retention system is more satisfactory than the O-ring (p = 0.017). CONCLUSION: Despite the limitations of overdentures, it was noted that, when properly indicated, they are a viable option for oral rehabilitation on implants. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Oral rehabilitation well-indicated with overdentures, especially those retained by the bar-clip system, results in an improvement in the patients' quality of life.
