RESUMO

The metal-catalyzed hydrogenolysis of polymers is important in waste recycling; however, it is limited by the harsh reaction conditions and the low activities of catalysts, especially for earth-abundant metal-based catalysts. Herein, we perform a comprehensive study on the hydrogenolysis of polyurethane model catalyzed by Fe-, Mn-, Ru-, and Ir-iPrMACHO pincer complexes and propose a cascade mechanism comprising two-level hydrogenolysis and the hydrogenation of formaldehyde. In addition, the substrates and ligands are modulated to improve the activities of chemical recycling to monomer. It is found that the pincer ligands could dissociate from the metal centers at high reaction temperatures and further result in the deactivation of catalysts. The rigid Fe and Mn catalysts with tetradentate cyclic ligands are designed following the guidance, and the computations suggest that those designed catalysts could have high stabilities and activities.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Pediatric oral and maxillofacial surgeons have faced severe challenges in ward management due to their high risk of exposure during the COVID-19 epidemic. The aim of this study was to analyze and summarize the treatment methods and infection prevention and control measures applied in emergency cases in the Department of Pediatric Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, during the COVID-19 epidemic. METHODS: In this retrospective study, information was collected from 256 pediatric emergency patients who were treated from January 23, 2020 to August 9, 2021. The patients' data were statistically analyzed according to age, gender, disease and pathogenesis, operation time, and the main treatment applied in pediatric oral and maxillofacial emergency cases during the COVID-19 epidemic. RESULTS: During the epidemic period, 256 pediatric emergency patients were successfully treated. Among them, there were 170 boys and 86 girls. In all, 182 patients were diagnosed with oral or facial lacerations; 43 had jaw fractures; 26 had maxillofacial infections; and five had dento-alveolar fractures. A total of 246 patients underwent surgery under negative pressure with level 3 protection standards. No doctors or patients infected with COVID-19 were found throughout the stury period. CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric oral and maxillofacial emergency in-patients mainly experienced maxillofacial trauma during the COVID-19 epidemic, followed by infection. Effective diagnosis and treatment, and avoidance of COVID-19 infection can be achieved by strictly following epidemic prevention and treatment procedures.

RESUMO

Osthole (Ost) is a coumarin compound and a potential drug for Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the effectiveness of Ost is limited by solubility, bioavailability, and low permeability of the blood-brain barrier. In this study, we constructed Ost liposomes with modified CXCR4 on the surface (CXCR4-Ost-Lips), and investigated the intracellular distribution of liposomes in APP-SH-SY5Y cells. In addition, the neuroprotective effect of CXCR4-Ost-Lips was examined in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that CXCR4-Ost-Lips increased intracellular uptake by APP-SH-SY5Y cells and exerted a cytoprotective effect in vitro. The results of Ost brain distribution showed that CXCR4-Ost-Lips prolonged the cycle time of mice and increased the accumulation of Ost in the brain. In addition, CXCR4-Ost-Lips enhanced the effect of Ost in relieving AD-related pathologies. These results indicate that CXCR4-modified liposomes are a potential Ost carrier to treat AD.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To preparethe poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) microspheres and PLGA-chitosan microspheres containing Helicobacter pylori recombinant protein, namely the BIB protein, and to explore their optimal preparation parameters and in vitro release performance in gastric and intestinal fluids. METHODS: Double emulsions (water-in-oil-in-water, or W1/O/W2) solvent evaporation method was used to prepare the BIB-PLGA microspheres and the BIB-PLGA-chitosan microspheres. Univariate analysis was done to study the impact of the water-to-oil ratio (W1/O), PLGA mass fraction and PVA concentration on the morphology, particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), encapsulation efficiency (EE), and drug loading (DL) so as to identify the optimal parameters. Bicinchoninic acid (BCA) assay was used to determine the protein concentration and the release efficiency of BIB. RESULTS: The optimal preparation parameters identified in the study were as follows: W1/O at 1∶2, PLGA mass fraction at 5%, and PVA mass fraction at 0.2%. The BIB-PLGA microspheres were found to be (2.11±0.08) µm in particle size, 0.35±0.18 in PDI, (78.20±1.73)% in EE and (10.58±0.23)% in DL. The BIB-PLGA-chitosan microspheres were (2.28±0.52) µm in particle size, 0.39±0.54 in PDI, and (78.87±1.30)% and (15.50±0.25)% in EE and DL, respectively. Both BIB-PLGA microspheres and BIB-PLGA-chitosan microspheres showed slow-release property in gastric and intestinal fluids in vitro, with BIB-PLGA-chitosan microspheres showing better slow-release performance. CONCLUSION: The BIB-PLGA microspheres and BIB-PLGA-chitosan microspheres prepared with the double emulsions solvent evaporation method showed high DL and EE, controllable particle sizes, dispersive appearance, and slow-release property in gastric and intestinal fluids in vitro.

RESUMO

A super-carbon-chain compound, named gibbosol C, featuring a polyoxygenated C70-linear-carbon-chain backbone encompassing two acyclic polyol chains, was obtained from the South China Sea dinoflagellate Amphidinium gibbosum. Its planar structure was elucidated by extensive NMR investigations, whereas its absolute configurations, featuring the presence of 36 carbon stereocenters and 30 hydroxy groups, were successfully established by comparison of NMR data of the ozonolyzed products with those of gibbosol A, combined with J-based configuration analysis, Kishi's universal NMR database, and the modified Mosher's MTPA ester method. Multi-segment modification was revealed as the smart biosynthetic strategy for the dinoflagellate to create remarkable super-carbon-chain compounds with structural diversity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Although unset mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) has some cytotoxicity, MTA is still a biocompatible material suitable for doing apexification. This study assessed the outcomes for 8 necrotic immature open-apex permanent maxillary central incisors treated by MTA apexification using poly(ε-caprolactone) fiber mesh (PCL-FM) as an apical barrier (so-called PCL-FM/MTA apexification) to prevent extrusion of MTA materials into the periapical tissues of open-apex teeth. METHODS: Eight necrotic immature open-apex permanent maxillary central incisors with the open apices measuring 2.5 mm-3.5 mm in diameter in 8 patients (6 boys and 2 girls; age range, 8-10 years) were first cleaned using ultrasonic activated irrigation with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite solution and then treated by PCL-FM/MTA apexification procedure. RESULTS: All the 8 permanent maxillary central incisors showed successful outcomes after PCL-FM/MTA apexification procedure. The mean duration for apical hard tissue barrier formation of the 8 incisors was 6.8 ± 0.5 weeks (range 6-7 weeks). The mean increased root length was 1.8 ± 0.7 mm (range 1-3 mm) at 7 weeks and 3.1 ± 0.6 mm (range 2-4 mm) at 3 months. The mean increased dentinal wall thickness at the most apical portion of the root was 1.3 ± 0.5 mm (range 1-2 mm) at 7 weeks and 2.4 ± 0.6 mm (range 1.5-3 mm) at 3 months. None of the teeth treated by PCL-FM/MTA apexification showed tooth discoloration after a follow-up period of 3 months. CONCLUSION: PCL-FM/MTA apexification is an excellent technique for treatment of necrotic immature open-apex permanent maxillary central incisors.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of a novel porous silica carrier, AEROPERL® 300 Pharma (AP), to improve the in vitro release and oral bioavailability of puerarin (PUE) in solid dispersions (SDs). PUE-AP SD formulations with different ratios of drug to silica (RDS) were prepared by the solvent method. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results indicated that the dispersion of PUE improved as the concentration of AP was increased. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results revealed that PUE mostly existed in an amorphous state in the SDs. The rate of drug dissolution from the SDs was significantly higher than that from the PUE powder (p < 0.05). The in vitro drug release percentage from the PUE-AP SDs increased as the RDS was reduced. The oral bioavailability of PUE from the SDs improved when using AP, as indicated by AUC(0-∞), which was 2.05 and 2.01 times greater than that of the PUE (API) and PVP K30 SDs, respectively (p < 0.05). The drug content, in vitro release profiles, and the amorphous state of PUE in the PUE-AP SDs showed no significant changes after being stored at room temperature for 6 months or under accelerated conditions (40 ± 2°C, 75 ± 5% relative humidity) for 3 months. AP has a high pore volume, large specific surface area, excellent flowability, and hydrophilic properties, making it capable of improving the dissolution and bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Bioaggregates such as Portland cement (PC) can be an economical alternative for mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) with additional benefit of less discoloration. MTA has been known to induce differentiations of several dental cells. MicroRNAs are important regulators of biological processes, including differentiation, physiologic homeostasis, and disease progression. This study is to explore how PC enhances the differentiation of periodontal ligament (PDL) cells in microRNAs level. METHODS: PDL cells were cultured in a regular PC- or MTA-conditioned medium or an osteoinduction medium (OIM). Alizarin red staining was used to evaluate the extent of mineralization. Transfection of microRNA mimics induced exogenous miR-31 and miR-146a expression. The expression of microRNAs and differentiation markers was assayed using reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: PC enhanced the mineralization of PDL cells in a dose-dependent manner in the OIM. Exogenous miR-31 and miR-146a expression upregulated alkaline phosphatase (ALP), bone morphogenic protein (BMP), and dentin matrix protein 1 (DMP1) expression. However, miR-31 and miR-146a modulates cementum protein 1 (CEMP1) expression in different ways. PC also enhanced ALP and BMP but attenuated CEMP1 in the OIM. Although the OIM or PC treatment upregulated miR-21, miR-29b, and miR-146a, only miR-146a was able to be induced by PC in combination with OIM. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that PC enhances the differentiation of PDL cells, especially osteogenic through miR-146a upregulation. In order to control the ankylosis after regenerative endodontics with the usage of bioaggregates, further investigations to explore these differentiation mechanisms in the miRNA level may be needed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Bacteria in the tooth root canal may cause apical periodontitis. This study examined the bacterial species present in the apical root canal of teeth with apical periodontitis. Antibiotic sensitivity tests were performed to evaluate whether these identified bacterial species were susceptible to specific kinds of antibiotics. METHODS: Selective media plating and biochemical tests were used first to detect the bacterial species in samples taken from the apical portion of root canals of 62 teeth with apical periodontitis. The isolated bacterial species were further confirmed by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry. RESULTS: We found concomitant presence of two (32 teeth) or three species (18 teeth) of bacteria in 50 (80.6%) out of 62 tested teeth. However, only 34 bacterial species were identified. Of a total of 118 bacterial isolates (83 anaerobes and 35 aerobes), Prophyromonas endodontalis was detected in 10; Bacteroides, Dialister invisus or Fusobacterium nucleatum in 9; Treponema denticola or Enterococcus faecalis in 8; Peptostreptococcus or Olsenella uli in 6; and Veillonella in 5 teeth. The other 25 bacterial species were detected in fewer than five teeth. Approximately 80-95% of bacterial isolates of anaerobes were sensitive to ampicillin/sulbactam (Unasyn), amoxicillin/clavulanate (Augmentin), cefoxitin, and clindamycin. For E. faecalis, 85-90% of bacterial isolates were sensitive to gentamicin and linezolid. CONCLUSION: Root canal infections are usually caused by a mixture of two or three species of bacteria. Specific kinds of antibiotic can be selected to control these bacterial infections after antibiotic sensitivity testing.

RESUMO

In this work, a miniaturized solid-phase extraction (SPE) platform, called sorbent membrane funnel, which permits in situ cleanup prior to membrane funnel-based spray analysis was developed. The fabrication of funnel and the mounting of SPE sorbent were simple and straightforward by a homemade punching system. Using different sorbents, the SPE sorbent funnel has been successfully applied in spray analysis of drug molecules spiked in human plasma, trypsin digested solution of bovine serum albumin in the presence of high concentration of chaotropic reagents, and phosphopeptides in the tryptic digested solution of casein. The results demonstrated that SPE sorbent attached membrane funnels can be a useful tool in common metabolomic and proteomic applications.

RESUMO

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is responsible for the outbreaks of hand-foot-and-mouth disease in the Asia-Pacific region. To produce the virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine, we previously constructed recombinant baculoviruses to co-express EV71 P1 polypeptide and 3CD protease using the Bac-to-Bac(®) vector system. The recombinant baculoviruses resulted in P1 cleavage by 3CD and subsequent VLP assembly in infected insect cells, but caused either low VLP yield or excessive VLP degradation. To tackle the problems, here we explored various expression cassette designs and flashBAC GOLD™ vector system which was deficient in v-cath and chiA genes. We found that the recombinant baculovirus constructed using the flashBAC GOLD™ system was insufficient to improve the EV71 VLP yield. Nonetheless, BacF-P1-C3CD, a recombinant baculovirus constructed using the flashBAC GOLD(TM) system to express P1 under the polh promoter and 3CD under the CMV promoter, dramatically improved the VLP yield while alleviating the VLP degradation. Infection of High Five(TM) cells with BacF-P1-C3CD enhanced the total and extracellular VLP yield to ≈268 and ≈171 mg/L, respectively, which enabled the release of abundant VLP into the supernatant and simplified the downstream purification. Intramuscular immunization of mice with 5 µg purified VLP induced cross-protective humoral responses and conferred protection against lethal virus challenge. Given the significantly improved extracellular VLP yield (≈171 mg/L) and the potent immunogenicity conferred by 5 µg VLP, one liter High Five(TM) culture produced ≈12,000 doses of purified vaccine, thus rendering the EV71 VLP vaccine economically viable and able to compete with inactivated virus vaccines.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Traumatic injury often results in pulp necrosis of immature permanent incisors in children. This study compared clinical outcomes for 40 necrotic immature permanent incisors treated with calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] or mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) apexification/apexogenesis. METHODS: Forty necrotic open-apex incisors from 40 children aged 6.5-10 years were divided evenly into four groups with each group containing teeth of similar type and similar root apex width in patients of similar age. Group 1 incisors were treated with ultrasonic filing and MTA placement; Group 2 were treated with ultrasonic filing and Ca(OH)2 medication; Group 3 were treated with hand filing and MTA placement; and Group 4 were treated with hand filing and Ca(OH)2 medication. RESULTS: Group 1 incisors needed the shortest mean duration (5.4 ± 1.1 weeks) for apical hard tissue barrier formation, followed by Group 3 incisors (7.8 ± 1.8 weeks), Group 2 incisors (11.3 ± 1.3 weeks), and Group 4 incisors (13.1 ± 1.5 weeks). Group 1 incisors had a significantly shorter mean elongated root length (2.1 ± 0.2 mm) after treatment than Group 2 incisors (3.5 ± 0.3 mm, p < 0.001), and Group 3 incisors had a significantly shorter mean elongated root length (2.1 ± 0.1 mm) after treatment than Group 4 incisors (3.7 ± 0.3 mm, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Necrotic open-apex incisors treated with ultrasonic filing plus MTA placement need the shortest mean duration for apical hard tissue barrier formation. For elongation of apical root length, Ca(OH)2 apexification/apexogenesis is better than MTA apexification/apexogenesis, regardless if either ultrasonic or hand filing are used.

RESUMO

Demineralized bone powder (DBP) has been used by clinicians for years to treat bone defects. Although DBP treatment often leads to successful bone healing, a number of studies using DBP have demonstrated poor bone formation. It is known that soluble factors released from DBP modulate bone formation. We hypothesized that DBP releases or interacts with soluble factors that modulate osteogenesis of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Our in vitro study demonstrated that the expression of mRNA transcripts of bone-related markers decreased in osteogenic culture of human MSCs (hMSCs) with DBP compared to that without DBP. Using a high-throughput protein array, we identified insulin-like growth factor binding protein-1, thrombospondin, and angiostatin that were found abundant in the medium cultured with DBP. Separately, we detected a significant reduction of soluble calcium and phosphate in the DBP-present medium compared to that in the DBP-absent medium, and showed that hMSC osteogenesis was regulated by the amounts of soluble calcium and phosphate in the medium. Moreover, DBP was shown to sequester soluble calcium and phosphate in the medium, thereby depleting them from interacting with hMSCs during osteogenesis. This study provides a possible explanation to an important question associated with the use of DBP in clinical treatments.

RESUMO

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: In analgesic trials, pain relief is often assessed using a pain-relief score. We aimed to assess, through a meta-analysis, whether absence of need for rescue medication (NNR) is a reliable outcome measure in the evaluation of acute pain relief. METHODS: Individual-patient meta-analysis of placebo-controlled trials of single-dose naproxen sodium 220 or 440 mg in dental pain. Efficacy estimates were based on NNR and compared with the more commonly used 50% maximum total pain relief score (50% TOTPAR). The trials included were the full set of trials sponsored by one manufacturer. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Need for rescue medication and 50% TOTPAR gave comparable estimates of efficacy of naproxen sodium (220 and 440 mg) relative to placebo in dental pain at both 8 and 12 h after dosing. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION: No need for rescue medication is a reliable outcome measure for use in acute pain trials. As it is more readily understandable than 50% TOTPAR, it should be the preferred primary outcome measure in acute pain trials.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of 4 kinds of prosthodontic materials on masticatory and gingival function. METHODS: A total of 167 patients with dental defects who underwent prosthodontic treatment from October 2019 to January 2022 were collected. They were randomly divided into 4 groups with 41 cases in the pure titanium group, 40 cases in the cobalt-chromium alloy group, 43 cases in the nickel-chromium alloy group and 43 cases in the zirconium dioxide group. The curative effect and satisfaction degree after 6 months of treatment in 4 groups were recorded and compared. The masticatory function (chewing efficiency, bite force), gingival function[plaque index(PLI), gingival index(GI) and sulcus bleeding index(SBI)], gingival crevicular fluid inflammation-related indicators[tumor necrosis factor alpha(TNF-α), interleukin-6(IL-6), aspartate aminotransferase(AST) and alkaline phosphatase (alkaline phosphatase, ALP)] before and after treatment were measured and compared in 4 groups. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS 20.0 software package. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in curative effect in 4 groups(P>0.05). Before and after treatment, there was no significant difference in mastication efficiency and bite force in 4 groups(P>0.05). Before treatment, there was no significant difference in PLI, GI, SBI, gingival crevicular fluid weight, TNF-α, IL-6, AST and ALP in gingival crevicular fluid in 4 groups(P>0.05). Compared with before treatment, PLI, GI and SBI in 4 groups were decreased after treatment (P<0.05), and the decrease was in the order of cobalt-chromium alloy group≈nickel-chromium alloy group<pure titanium group<zirconia dioxide group. Before treatment, there was no significant difference in the weight of gingival crevicular fluid, TNF-α, IL-6, AST and ALP in gingival crevicular fluid in 4 groups(P>0.05). The crevicular fluid weight, TNF-α, IL-6, AST and ALP in gingival crevicular fluid were significantly increased(P<0.05), and the increase was in the order of zirconia group<pure titanium group<cobalt-chromium alloy group≈nickel-chromium alloy group. There was no significant difference in restoration integrity and color satisfaction in 4 groups(P>0.05), but there was significant difference in marginal fitness and sensitivity satisfaction in 4 groups(P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Pure titanium, cobalt-chromium alloy, nickel-chromium alloy and zirconium dioxide can be used for the treatment of dentition defects, and they all can obtain satisfactory chewing function. In addition, zirconium dioxide restoration has the effect of improving gingival function and inflammation-related indicators of gingival crevicular fluid with a broader application prospect.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) exhibits a high degree of antigenic variability. Studies of the antigenic diversity and determination of amino acid changes involved in this diversity are important to the design of broadly protective new vaccines. Although extensive studies have been carried out to explore the molecular basis of the antigenic variation of serotype O and serotype A FMDV, there are few reports on Asia1 serotype FMDV. METHODS: Two serotype Asia1 viruses, Asia1/YS/CHA/05 and Asia1/1/YZ/CHA/06, which show differential reactivity to the neutralizing monoclonal antibody (nMAb) 1B4, were subjected to sequence comparison. Then a reverse genetics system was used to generate mutant versions of Asia1/YS/CHA/05 followed by comparative analysis of the antigenicity, growth property and pathogenicity in the suckling mice. RESULTS: Three amino acid differences were observed when the structural protein coding sequences of Asia1/1/YZ/CHA/06 were compared to that of Asia1/YS/CHA/05. Site-directed mutagenesis and Immunofluorescence analysis showed that the amino acid substitution in the B-C loop of the VP2 protein at position 72 is responsible for the antigenic difference between the two Asia1 FMDV strains. Furthermore, alignment of the amino acid sequences of VP2 proteins from serotype Asia1 FMDV strains deposited in GenBank revealed that most of the serotype Asia1 FMDV strains contain an Asn residue at position 72 of VP2. Therefore, we constructed a mutant virus carrying an Asp-to-Asn substitution at position 72 and named it rD72N. Our analysis shows that the Asp-to-Asn substitution inhibited the ability of the rD72N virus to react with the MAb 1B4 in immunofluorescence and neutralization assays. In addition, this substitution decreased the growth rate of the virus in BHK-21 cells and decreased the virulence of the virus in suckling mice compared with the Asia1/YS/CHA/05 parental strain. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that variations in domains other than the hyper variable VP1 G-H loop (amino acid 140 to 160) are relevant to the antigenic diversity of FMDV. In addition, amino acid substitutions in the VP2 influenced replicative ability and virulence of the virus. Thus, special consideration should be given to the VP2 protein in research on structure-function relationships and in the development of an FMDV vaccine.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the effects of different prescription compositions of traditional Chinese medicine and its different extraction methods of compound formula extracts on hypoxia tolerance in mice, in order to preferably select their prescription compositions and preparation extraction methods. Methods: Male BALB/c mice were randomly divided into 6 groups: blank control group, compound danshen group, compound Rhodiola Rosea alcohol-water extract group (Rhodiola rosea, Astragali Radix, Polygonati Rhizoma, Lycii Fructus), compound Rhodiola Rosea water extract group, compound Astragalus alcohol-water extract group (Astragali Radix, Polygonati Rhizoma, Lycii Fructus) and compound Astragalus water extract group, 30 mice in each group. Each group was administered continuously by gavage for 10 d. The blank group was gavaged with sterilized injection water. The mice in the other groups were treated with 0.15 g/kg of compound danshen, 3 g/kg of compound Rhodiola Rosea alcohol-water extract or water extract, and 1.7 g/kg of compound Astragalus alcohol-water extract or water extract, respectively. Each group was subjected to normobaric hypoxia tolerance test, sodium nitrite toxicity survival test and acute cerebral ischemia-hypoxia test 1 h after the last gavage, and the mice brain tissues were used to determine the activity of antioxidant enzymes and metabolites related to oxidative stress. Results: Compared with the blank control group, in normobaric hypoxia tolerance test, the survival time of mice in the compound danshen group and the compound Astragalus alcohol-water extract group and water extraction group was prolonged significantly (P<0.01), and the number of open-mouth gasping after cerebral ischemia and hypoxia was increased significantly (P<0.05). There was no statistical difference in survival time after sodium nitrite injection in each group. Compared with the blank control group, the activities of T-AOC, SOD, GSH and CAT were increased significantly (P<0.05, P<0.01) and the content of MDA was decreased significantly (P<0.01) in the compound Astragalus water extract group. Compared with the compound danshen group, the activities of SOD, CAT and GSH were increased significantly (P<0.01, P<0.05) and the content of MDA was decreased significantly (P<0.05). Conclusion: Compound Astragalus water extraction has the best effect of hypoxia tolerance, compound Rhodiola Rosea can eliminate Rhodiola rosea and consists of Astragali Radix, Polygonati Rhizoma, Lycii Fructus and its extraction method is water extraction.

RESUMO

Although the pollution of freshwater systems by microplastics and the resulting ecological effects have attracted widespread attention from scholars at home and abroad, the fragmentation of different types of microplastics in the natural environment has not yet received enough attention. To analyze the fragmentation processes and products of different types of microplastics, a 40 d natural light fragmentation experiment was carried out using four microplastics commonly found in water:polystyrene (PS), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP), and polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). The pH, ORP, EC, and DO of the four types of plastic-aging liquids changed significantly during the aging process. During the weathering process, cracks and pores formed on the surface of LDPE and were later identified through scanning electron microscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectrometry indicated that the carbonyl index of LDPE increased the most in the experiment (an increase of 31.48%), suggesting that PP experienced significant aging. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC), a product of microplastics fragmentation, increased as weathering time progressed, and the concentration of DOC increased significantly after weathering for about 40 d. Compared with the baseline value, the concentration of DOC from PHB, PP, and LDPE in the leaching solution increased significantly, by 61.29%, 69.49%, and 89.15%, respectively. These results suggest that evident aging of microplastics in natural aquatic environments releases significant amounts of dissolved organic matter, and the ecological effects of this should be the subject of future research.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Traumatic injury usually results in pulp necrosis of immature permanent incisors in children aged 7-10 years. Calcium hydroxide apexification is the most common treatment for necrotic, immature permanent teeth. This study compared the duration for apical barrier formation in necrotic immature permanent incisors treated with calcium hydroxide apexification using ultrasonic or hand filing. METHODS: Thirty-two trauma-induced necrotic immature permanent incisors with or without a periapical lesion (PL) were selected from children aged 7-10 years. They were evenly divided into four groups. Teeth in groups 1 (with PL) and 2 (without PL) were treated with ultrasonic filing, and teeth in groups 3 (with PL) and 4 (without PL) were treated with hand filing. The canals were cleaned with 0.2% chlorhexidine solution during treatment and then compactly filled with calcium hydroxide. The patients were followed up once every 1-3 weeks to change the intracanal medication and to detect when the apical barrier formed. RESULTS: The mean duration for apical barrier formation was 11.1 +/- 1.1 weeks, 11.8 +/- 1.0 weeks, 13.3+/-0.9 weeks and 13.4 +/- 0.7 weeks for groups 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively. Student's t test showed significant differences in the mean duration for apical barrier formation between groups 1+2 and 3 + 4 (p = 0.000), groups 1 and 3 (p = 0.000), and groups 2 and 4 (p = 0.002). These results indicated that teeth treated with ultrasonic filing required a shorter mean duration for apical barrier formation than teeth treated with hand filing regardless of the presence of PL or not. CONCLUSION: Ultrasonic filing with 0.2% chlorhexidine as an irrigant is effective for disinfection of the root canal and can shorten the duration for apical barrier formation in necrotic permanent incisors treated with calcium hydroxide apexification.
