RESUMO

A novel intercalated nanocomposite of mercapto-modified cellulose/bentonite (LCS-BE-SH) was synthesized by high-speed shearing method in one step at room temperature, and was applied to remove Cd from solution and remediate Cd-contaminated soil. Results revealed that cellulose long-chain molecules have intercalated into bentonite nanolayers and interlayer spacing was increased to 1.411 nm, and grafting -SH groups improved adsorption selectivity, which enabled LCS-BE-SH to have distinct capability of Cd adsorption (qmax = 147.21 mg/g). Kinetic and thermodynamics showed that Cd adsorption onto LCS-BE-SH was well fitted by pseudo-second-order and Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Characterizations of the adsorbents revealed that synergistic effect of complexation (e.g., CdS, CdO) and precipitation (e.g., Cd(OH)2, CdCO3) mechanism played a major role in Cd removal. In soil remediation, application of LCS-BE-SH was most effective (67.31 %) in Cd immobilization compared to the control (8.85 %), which reduced exchangeable Cd from 37.03 % to 11.44 %. Meanwhile, soil pH, soil organic matter, available phosphorus, and enzyme activities (catalase, urease, and dehydrogenase) were improved LCS-BE-SH treatment. The main immobilization mechanism in soil included complexation (e.g., CdS, CdO) and precipitation (e.g., Cd(OH)2, Cd-Fe-hydroxide). Overall, this work applied a promising approach for Cd removal in aqueous and Cd remediation in soil by using an effective eco-friendly LCS-BE-SH nanocomposites.

Microplastics are widely found in rivers and their sediments, which will cause harm to the water ecological environment. The Wei River is a first-class tributary of the Yellow River, the fifth largest river in the world, and has vulnerable ecological environment and most sediment in the world. However, understanding how anthropogenic activities and environmental factors affect the microplastics distribution in this river is not clear. Based on this, the spatiotemporal distribution of microplastics in the Wei River were investigated. The abundance of microplastics ranged from 1033 to 8333 items/m3 and from 120 to 840 items/kg in the water and in the sediment, respectively. Fibers and fragments were the main shapes of Wei River, microplastics less than 500 µm were the main sizes, and black and white/transparent were the main colors. In Wei River, the abundance of microplastics in urban areas was higher than that in agricultural areas and mountainous areas. Furthermore, the correlation analysis revealed that microplastic abundance in the water was related to anthropogenic activities (population density, per capita GDP and distance) and environmental factors (water temperature, NH3-N, ORP), while in the sediments was correlated with anthropogenic activities (per capita GDP) and environmental factors (water temperature and NH3-N). This study reveals new patterns in microplastic pollution in the Wei River, underscoring the need for targeted environmental strategies. Our findings provide novel insights into the characteristics and distribution of microplastics, significantly adding to the current understanding of riverine microplastic pollution.

Saliva sampling is a non-invasive method, and could be performed by donors themselves. However, there are few studies reporting biomarkers in saliva in the diagnosis of NPC. A total of 987 salivary samples were used in this study. First, EBV DNA methylation was profiled by capture sequencing in the discovery cohort (n = 36). Second, a q-PCR based method was developed and five representative EBV DNA CpG sites (11 029 bp, 45 849 bp, 57 945 bp, 66 226 bp and 128 102 bp) were selected and quantified to obtain the methylated density in the validation cohort1 (n = 801). Third, a validation cohort2 (n = 108) was used to further verify the differences of EBV methylation in saliva. A significant increase of EBV methylation was found in NPC patients compared with controls. The methylated score of EBV genome obtained by capture sequencing could distinguish NPC from controls (sensitivity 90%, specificity 100%). Further, the methylated density of EBV DNA CpG sites revealed by q-PCR showed a good diagnostic performance. The sensitivity and specificity of detecting a single CpG site (11 029 bp) could reach 75.4% and 99.7% in the validation cohort1, and 78.2% and 100% in the validation cohort2. Besides, the methylated density of the CpG site was found to decrease below the COV in NPC patients after therapy, and increase above the COV after recurrence. Our study provides an appealing alternative for the non-invasive detection of NPC without clinical setting. It paves the way for conducting a home-based large-scale screening in the future.

The incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been increasing in recent years, particularly in newly industrialized nations. Environmental factors have been identified as playing a crucial role in IBD pathogenesis. Microplastics (MPs), a novel class of environmental pollutants, are a significant global pollution concern. MPs are found in almost all aquatic environments. MPs in the environment may pose health risks, specifically concerning the intestinal system, due to prolonged exposure through the consumption of aquatic foods and drinking water. In this review, we aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge on the impact of MPs in water resources on the occurrence and progression of IBD. Our systematic analysis of in vitro and in vivo studies found that MPs induce intestinal barrier dysfunction, imbalance in the intestinal microbiome, and metabolic abnormalities, ultimately leading to IBD. In addition, MP exposure causes greater harm to individuals with preexisting gastrointestinal disorders than those without them. Our analysis of this literature review highlights the need for further research to improve the understanding of the complex relationship between MP exposure and IBD.

OBJECTIVE: Mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) is a powerful tool for the correction of hemifacial microsomia (HFM). The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the focus of attention in the diagnosis and treatment of HFM. This observational retrospective cross-sectional study aimed to investigate morphologic changes in TMJ post-MDO in type IIa HFM. METHODS: We recruited 48 patients with unilateral type IIa HFM who had completed MDO and mandibular distractor extraction (MDE). Data relating to the length, distance, angle, and volume of the TMJ were measured on 3-dimension models created by the analysis of computed tomography data. Normality analysis was performed by using the Shapiro-Wilk test. Data were compared with the paired t test and Wilcoxon signed-ranks test. RESULTS: The spaces between the affected condyle and the affected glenoid fossa before MDO were all significantly larger than before MDE (P<0.05). The breadth of the affected glenoid fossa before MDO was significantly longer than before MDE (P<0.001). The height of the affected condyle before MDO was significantly longer than before MDE (P<0.001). The volume of the affected condyle before MDO was significantly larger than before MDE (P<0.001). The ratio between the volume of the affected condyle and unaffected condyle before MDO was 0.20±0.13. The ratio between the volume of the affected condyle before MDE and MDO was 0.65±0.32. The resorption rate of the affected condyle post-MDO was 0.35±0.32. CONCLUSION: Herein, we characterized anatomic changes of the TMJ in type- IIa HFM post-MDO. Condylar resorption and the compression of space between the condyle and the glenoid fossa on the affected side were 2 typical manifestations. Our findings enhanced the understanding of the application of MDO on HFM.

Take-out food has become increasingly prevalent due to the fast pace of people's life. However, few study has been done on microplastics in take-out food. Contacting with disposable plastic containers, take-out food may be contaminated with microplastics. In the present study, abundance and characteristics of microplastics in total of 146 take-out food samples including solid food samples and beverage samples (bubble tea and coffee) were determined and identified. The mean abundance of microplastics in take-out food was 639 items kg-1, with the highest value in rice and the lowest value in coffee. Fragments shape, transparent color and sizes ≤ 500 µm were the main characteristics of microplastics in those food, and polyethylene was the main polymer type. Our results indicated that microplastics in take-out food was influenced by food categories and cooking methods, as well as food packaging materials. Approximately 170-638 items of microplastics may be consumed by people who order take-out food 1-2 times weekly.

With the advent of the post-COVID-19 era, corporate managers of import and export trade are now more sensitive in their daily work, and their decisions are more likely to be influenced by the emotional bias of public opinions, especially regarding cooperation with trade ports of frequent circulation. Therefore, how to manage public opinion and sentiment in the post-COVID-19 era will be a new opportunity and challenge for the marketing management of ports. For the above considerations, through the same frequency verification between public opinions and sentiment on ports and corporate choice of import and export trade, and through analysis of the influence mechanism, the present study demonstrates the positive effects of public opinions and sentiment on ports in corporate choice of import and export trade in the post-COVID-19 era, verifies the significance of shaping word of mouth in port management, puts forward the great role of public opinions and sentiment in the cognitive and emotional empathy in the choice of import and export trade, and provides theoretical guidance for port managers' strategic choices in the post-COVID-19 era.

In the design of dental multifunctional Cone Beam Computed Tomography, the linear scanning strategy not only saves equipment cost, but also avoids the demand for patients to be repositioned when acquiring lateral cranial sequence images. In order to obtain panoramic images, we propose a local normalized cross-correlation stitching algorithm based on Gaussian Mixture Model. Firstly, the Block-Matching and 3D filtering algorithm is used to remove quantum and impulse noises according to the characteristics of X-ray images; Then, the segmentation of the irrelevant region and the extraction of the region of interest are performed by Gaussian Mixture Model; The locally normalized cross-relation is used to complete the registration with the multi-resolution strategy based on wavelet transform and Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm; Finally, image fusion is achieved by the weighted smoothing fusion algorithm. The experimental results show that the panoramic image obtained by this method has significant performance in both subjective vision and objective quality evaluation and can be applied to preoperative diagnosis of clinical dental deformity and postoperative effect evaluation.

At least 24 aldehyde reductases from Saccharomyces cerevisiae have been characterized and most function in in situ detoxification of lignocellulosic aldehyde inhibitors, but none is classified into the polyol dehydrogenase (PDH) subfamily of the medium-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (MDR) superfamily. This study confirmed that two (2R,3R)-2,3-butanediol dehydrogenases (BDHs) from industrial (denoted Y)/laboratory (denoted B) strains of S. cerevisiae, Bdh1p(Y)/Bdh1p(B) and Bdh2p(Y)/Bdh2p(B), were members of the PDH subfamily with an NAD(P)H binding domain and a catalytic zinc binding domain, and exhibited reductive activities towards lignocellulosic aldehyde inhibitors, such as acetaldehyde, glycolaldehyde, and furfural. Especially, the highest enzyme activity towards acetaldehyde by Bdh2p(Y) was 117.95 U/mg with cofactor nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide reduced (NADH). Based on the comparative kinetic property analysis, Bdh2p(Y)/Bdh2p(B) possessed higher specific activity, substrate affinity, and catalytic efficiency towards glycolaldehyde than Bdh1p(Y)/Bdh1p(B). This was speculated to be related to their 49% sequence differences and five nonsynonymous substitutions (Ser41Thr, Glu173Gln, Ile270Leu, Ile316Met, and Gly317Cys) occurred in their conserved NAD(P)H binding domains. Compared with BDHs from a laboratory strain, Bdh1p(Y) and Bdh2p(Y) from an industrial strain displayed five nonsynonymous mutations (Thr12, Asn61, Glu168, Val222, and Ala235) and three nonsynonymous mutations (Ala34, Ile96, and Ala369), respectively. From a first analysis with selected aldehydes, their reductase activities were different from BDHs of laboratory strain, and their catalytic efficiency was higher towards glycolaldehyde and lower towards acetaldehyde. Comparative investigation of kinetic properties of BDHs from S. cerevisiae as aldehyde reductases provides a guideline for their practical applications in in situ detoxification of aldehyde inhibitors during lignocellulose bioconversion.Key Points• Two yeast BDHs have enzyme activities for reduction of aldehydes.• Overexpression of BDHs slightly improves yeast tolerance to acetaldehyde and glycolaldehyde.• Bdh1p and Bdh2p differ in enzyme kinetic properties.• BDHs from strains with different genetic backgrounds differ in enzyme kinetic properties.

Nitric oxide (NO) molecular messenger can reverse the multidrug resistance (MDR) effect of cancer cells through reducing P-glycoprotein (P-gp) expression, beneficial for creating a favorable microenvironment for the treatment of doxorubicin (Dox)-resistant cancer cells. Development of sophisticated nanosystems to programmably release NO and Dox becomes an efficient strategy to overcome the MDR obstacles and achieve promising therapeutic effects in Dox-resistant cancer. Herein, a NO stimulated nanosystem was designed to engineer a significant time gap between NO and Dox release, promoting MDR cancer therapy. A o-phenylenediamine-containing lipid that can hydrolyze in response to NO was embedded in the phospholipid bilayer structure of liposome to form NO-responsive liposome, which could further encapsulate l-arginine (l-Arg)/Dox-loaded gold@copper sulfide yolk-shell nanoparticls (ADAu@CuS YSNPs) to form ADLAu@CuS YSNPs. Under 808 nm laser irradiation, the unique resonant energy transfer (RET) process and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in the confined space of ADLAu@CuS YSNPs could effectively convert l-Arg into NO, regionally destabilizing the phospholipid bilayer structure, as a result of NO release. However, at this early stage Dox could not be released from YSNPs due to the molecular scaffold limit. As the NO release progressed, the NO-responsive liposome layer was deteriorated more severely, allowing Dox to escape. This NO and Dox sequential release of ADLAu@CuS YSNPs could significantly inhibit P-gp expression and enhance Dox accumulation in Dox-resistant MCF-7/ADR cells, leading to promising in vitro and in vivo therapeutic effects and presenting their great potential for MDR cancer therapy.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is a heterogeneous group of inherited sensorimotor neuropathies. To clarify the genetic spectrum and clinical profiles in Chinese CMT patients, we enrolled 150 unrelated CMT patients from southeast China. We performed multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) testing in all patients and next-generation sequencing (NGS) among those patients without PMP22 rearrangements. We identified PMP22 duplications in 40 patients and deletions in 12 patients. In addition, we found 19 novel variants and 36 known mutations in 57 patients. Among these 55 variants, 45 pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants were identified in 48 cases, and 10 variants with uncertain significance were identified in 9 cases. Therefore, we obtained a genetic diagnosis in 63.8% (88/138) of CMT patients and 66.7% (100/150) of all included patients. PMP22, GJB1, and MFN2 are the most common causative genes in CMT1 (demyelinated form), intermediate CMT, and CMT2 (axonal form), respectively. In this study, we identified a higher proportion of intermediate CMT, a relatively high frequency of NDRG1 mutations and clinical features of later onset age in CMT1A patients. Our results broaden the genetic and clinical spectrum of CMT patients, which can help optimize the genetic and clinical diagnosis.

The dark sleeper, Odontobutis obscura (O. obscura), is a commercially important species of freshwater sleeper native to East Asia. However, its molecular biology system is unexplored, including the interferon (IFN) signaling pathway, which is crucial to the antiviral response. In this study, we characterised the IFN regulation pattern of dark sleeper interferon regulatory factor 3 (OdIRF3), supplementing evidence of the conservation of this classical pathway in fish. First, the open reading frame (ORF) of OdIRF3 was cloned from the liver tissue by Rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). Amino acid sequence analysis suggested that OdIRF3 is homologous with other fish IRF3 and that the N-terminal DNA-binding domain (DBD) and the C-terminal IRF-association domain (IAD) are conserved. Then, the cellular distribution demonstrated that OdIRF3 is located in the cytoplasm region and transfers into the nuclear region under stimulation. For the function identification, OdIRF3 activated several types of IFN promoters and induced downstream interferon stimulated genes (ISGs) expression. Finally, the overexpression of OdIRF3 significantly decreased viral proliferation. Taken together, these data systematically characterised the sequence, cellular location, and function in IFN expression of OdIRF3, shedding light on the molecular biology mechanism of the dark sleeper.

BACKGROUND: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is the most common neurodegenerative disorder of the peripheral nervous system. More than 50 genes/loci were found associated with the disease. We found a family with autosomal-dominant CMT2. OBJECTIVE: To reveal the pathogenic gene of the family and further investigate the function of the variant. METHODS: DNA underwent whole-genome linkage analysis for all family members and whole-exome sequencing for 2 affected members. Neurofilament light polypeptide and wild-type or mutant neurofilament heavy polypeptide (NEFH) were co-transfected into SW13 (vim-) cells. The nefh-knockdown zebrafish model was produced by using morpholino antisense oligonucleotides. RESULTS: We identified a novel insertion variant (c.3057insG) in NEFH in the family. The variant led to the loss of a stop codon and an extended 41 amino acids in the protein. Immunofluorescence results revealed that mutant NEFH disrupted the neurofilament network and induced aggregation of NEFH protein. Knockdown of nefh in zebrafish caused a slightly or severely curled tail. The motor ability of nefh-knockdown embryos was impaired or even absent, and the embryos showed developmental defects of axons in motor neurons. The abnormal phenotype and axonal developmental defects could be rescued by injection of human wild-type but not human mutant NEFH mRNA. CONCLUSIONS: We identified a novel stop loss variant in NEFH that is likely pathogenic for CMT2, and the results provide further evidence for the role of an aberrant assembly of neurofilament in CMT.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 4D (CMT4D) is an autosomal-recessive demyelinating form of CMT characterized by a severe distal motor and sensory neuropathy. NDRG1 is the causative gene for CMT4D. To date, only four mutations in NDRG1 -c.442C>T (p.Arg148*), c.739delC (p.His247Thrfs*74), c.538-1G>A, and duplication of exons 6-8-have been described in CMT4D patients. Here, using targeted next-generation sequencing examination, we identified for the first time two homozygous missense variants in NDRG1, c.437T>C (p.Leu146Pro) and c.701G>A (p.Arg234Gln), in two Chinese CMT families with consanguineous histories. Further functional studies were performed to characterize the biological effects of these variants. Cell culture transfection studies showed that mutant NDRG1 carrying p.Leu146Pro, p.Arg148*, or p.Arg234Gln variant degraded faster than wild-type NDRG1, resulting in lower protein levels. Live cell confocal microscopy and coimmunoprecipitation analysis indicated that these variants did not disrupt the interaction between NDRG1 and Rab4a protein. However, NDRG1-knockdown cells expressing mutant NDRG1 displayed enlarged Rab4a-positive compartments. Moreover, mutant NDRG1 could not enhance the uptake of DiI-LDL or increase the fraction of low-density lipoprotein receptor on the cell surface. Taken together, our study described two missense mutations in NDRG1 and emphasized the important role of NDRG1 in intracellular protein trafficking.

Aldehydes generated as by-products during the pretreatment of lignocellulose are the key inhibitors to Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which is considered as the most promising microorganism for industrial production of biofuel, xylitol as well as other special chemicals from lignocellulose. S. cerevisiae has the inherent ability to in situ detoxify aldehydes to corresponding alcohols by multiple aldehyde reductases. Herein, we report that an uncharacterized open reading frame YKL071W from S. cerevisiae encodes a novel "classical" short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (SDR) protein with NADH-dependent enzymatic activities for reduction of furfural (FF), glycolaldehyde (GA), formaldehyde (FA), and benzaldehyde (BZA). This enzyme showed much better specific activities for reduction of GA and FF than FA and BZA, and displayed much higher Km and Kcat/Km but lower Vmax and Kcat for reduction of GA than FF. For this enzyme, the optimum pH was 5.5 and 6.0 for reduction of GA and FF, and the optimum temperature was 30 °C for reduction of GA and FF. Both pH and temperature affected stability of this enzyme in a similar trend for reduction of GA and FF. Cu2+, Zn2+, Ni2+, and Fe3+ had severe inhibition effects on enzyme activities of Ykl071wp for reduction of GA and FF. Transcription of YKL071W in S. cerevisiae was significantly upregulated under GA and FF stress conditions, and its transcription is most probably regulated by transcription factor genes of YAP1, CAD1, PDR3, and STB5. This research provides guidelines to identify more uncharacterized genes with reductase activities for detoxification of aldehydes derived from lignocellulose in S. cerevisiae.

Scheffersomyces (Pichia) stipitis is one of the most promising yeasts for industrial bioethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass. S. stipitis is able to in situ detoxify aldehyde inhibitors (such as furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF)) to less toxic corresponding alcohols. However, the reduction enzymes involved in this reaction remain largely unknown. In this study, we reported that an uncharacterized open reading frame PICST_72153 (putative GRE2) from S. stipitis was highly induced in response to furfural and HMF stresses. Overexpression of this gene in Saccharomyces cerevisiae improved yeast tolerance to furfural and HMF. GRE2 was identified as an aldehyde reductase which can reduce furfural to FM with either NADH or NADPH as the co-factor and reduce HMF to FDM with NADPH as the co-factor. This enzyme can also reduce multiple aldehydes to their corresponding alcohols. Amino acid sequence analysis indicated that it is a member of the subclass "intermediate" of the short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (SDR) superfamily. Although GRE2 from S. stipitis is similar to GRE2 from S. cerevisiae in a three-dimensional structure, some differences were predicted. GRE2 from S. stipitis forms loops at D133-E137 and T143-N145 locations with two α-helices at E154-K157 and E252-A254 locations, different GRE2 from S. cerevisiae with an α-helix at D133-E137 and a ß-sheet at T143-N145 locations, and two loops at E154-K157 and E252-A254 locations. This research provided guidelines for the study of other SDR enzymes from S. stipitis and other yeasts on tolerant mechanisms to aldehyde inhibitors derived from lignocellulosic biomass.

PURPOSE: Preoperative embolization of meningiomas decreases intraoperative bleeding and shortens operation time. However, in meningiomas predominantly vascularized by the internal carotid artery (ICA) or vertebral artery (VA) branches, embolization of external carotid artery feeder branches may lead to a hemodynamic increase in blood supply from the ICA or VA, whereas embolization of ICA or VA feeder branches with particle embolic agents may be associated with complications. This study investigated the safety and efficacy of Glubran, a liquid embolic agent, for the embolization of this type of meningioma compared with polyvinyl-alcohol (PVA) particles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2006 to June 2015, 157 consecutive patients (98 females; mean age = 48.3 years) who suffered from meningiomas and were preoperatively referred for embolization were retrospectively analyzed. Glubran (n = 40) and PVA (n = 55) were used to devascularize tumors. Sixty-two patients were not embolized because of dangerous anastomosis or other tumor characteristics. Intraoperative blood loss, intraoperative time, degree of angiographic devascularization and embolization-related complications were analyzed. RESULTS: The intraoperative blood loss and operative time were significantly lower in the Glubran-embolized versus non-embolized group. Furthermore, Glubran embolization significantly reduced intraoperative blood loss and operative time for meningiomas that received their primary blood supply from the ICA and/or VA compared with PVA embolization. CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative meningioma embolization with Glubran decreases intraoperative blood loss and operative time. Furthermore, embolization with Glubran produces more effective devascularization compared with PVA for meningiomas supplied by the ICA and/or VA. Thus, Glubran may represent a better embolic agent for this meningioma subtype.

Furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) are the two main aldehyde compounds derived from pentoses and hexoses, respectively, during lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment. These two compounds inhibit microbial growth and interfere with subsequent alcohol fermentation. Saccharomyces cerevisiae has the in situ ability to detoxify furfural and HMF to the less toxic 2-furanmethanol (FM) and furan-2,5-dimethanol (FDM), respectively. Herein, we report that an uncharacterized gene, YNL134C, was highly up-regulated under furfural or HMF stress and Yap1p and Msn2/4p transcription factors likely controlled its up-regulated expression. Enzyme activity assays showed that YNL134C is an NADH-dependent aldehyde reductase, which plays a role in detoxification of furfural to FM. However, no NADH- or NADPH-dependent enzyme activity was observed for detoxification of HMF to FDM. This enzyme did not catalyse the reverse reaction of FM to furfural or FDM to HMF. Further studies showed that YNL134C is a broad-substrate aldehyde reductase, which can reduce multiple aldehydes to their corresponding alcohols. Although YNL134C is grouped into the quinone oxidoreductase family, no quinone reductase activity was observed using 1,2-naphthoquinone or 9,10-phenanthrenequinone as a substrate, and phylogenetic analysis indicates that it is genetically distant to quinone reductases. Proteins similar to YNL134C in sequence from S. cerevisiae and other microorganisms were phylogenetically analysed.

OBJECTIVE: To access the feasibility and safety of application of flexible laryngeal mask airway (FLMA) in oral & maxillofacial day surgery. METHODS: Retrospective study was conducted of 40 oral & maxillofacial day surgery patients (3 to 61 years of age) using FLMA under general anaesthesia in Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology. All the patients were with American Society of Anesthesiologists(ASA) physical status I-II,including 19 males and 21 females. The patients'vital signs were recorded at five different time points: baseline before anesthesia (T0), time right after the FLMA insertion (T1), time at incision (T2), 15 min after incision (T3) and time at the end of the operation (T4). The first attempted FLMA insertion successful rate and the number of timed of changing to endotracheal intubation were recorded. During operation, frequencies of movement, hypoxia and obstruction of airway were noted and the operation time, anesthesia time, time from the end of the operation to extubation, movement and coughing following extubation and sore throat within 24 h were taken down. Operation-related complications of bleeding, hematoma and injury of local nerves were recorded within 24 h as well. RESULTS: The operations of all the 40 patients were successfully done under general anaesthesia. The 36(90%, 36/40)patients using FLMA successfully were under steady process, including 16 males and 20 females. The first attempted successful rate of FLMA insertion was 80% (32/40), and the second 50% (4/8). Three out of the 4 failed FLMA patients were changed to endotracheal intubation after the second attempt failed. The other patient was changed to endotracheal intubation before operation because of leak. The average operation time was (46.58 ± 22.57) min, the anesthesia time was (77.97 ± 26.82) min and the time from the end of operation to extubation was (8.31 ± 3.33) min. All the patients were recorded without obvious body movement during the operation procedure. There were 4 patients (11.11%, 4/36) with slight body movement during extubation. The incidence of sore throat was 13.89% (5/36) within 24 h postoperatively. There were no complications of bleeding, hematoma and injury of local nerves. The vital signs of baseline T0 were significantly different from those at other time points T1, T2, T3, and T4 (P<0.01). As to the hearts rate after anesthesia, the values at T1, T2, T3 and T4 for two-two comparison, there was no statistical difference (P>0.05). As to the values of systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure after anesthesia at T1 and T4, T2 and T3, for two-two comparison, there was no statistical difference (P>0.05). As to the respiratory rate from the start of the surgery, the values at T2, T3 and T4 showed no statistical difference (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: Flexible laryngeal mask airway is a supraglottic airway management method. It is suitable and safe for securing the airway in oral & maxillofacial day surgery. The advantages of fewer haemodynamic changes and postoperative complications are confirmed.

As environmental awareness increases, the use of recyclable plastics has risen. However, it is currently unclear whether recycled microplastics (MPs) pose a lesser or greater environmental risk than pristine MPs. Cadmium (Cd), known for its toxicity to most organisms, can bind with MPs and accumulate in sediments. Few studies have explored the environmental risks posed by the coexistence of recycled MPs and pristine MPs with Cd to rooted macrophytes. We investigated the effects of recycled PVC MPs (R-PVC-MPs) and pristine PVC MPs (PVC-MPs) on Vallisneria natans in the presence and absence of Cd. Results showed that at moderate and high Cd levels, R-PVC-MPs reduced plant Cd enrichment. Despite this, the fresh weight of V. natans exposed to R-PVC-MPs was significantly lower than those exposed to PVC-MPs. Furthermore, R-PVC-MPs had more negative impacts on the physiological traits of V. natans than PVC-MPs, as chlorophyll was significantly reduced across all Cd levels. At high Cd levels, both R-PVC-MPs and PVC-MPs caused significantly high oxidative stress, with no significant differences observed. The PCoA plot showed that different MPs cause noticeable variations within the same Cd concentration. The trait network diagrams illustrated strong interactions among traits, with R-PVC-MPs showing the highest complexity. Lower average degree and decreased edge density indicate that traits of plants with R-PVC-MPs addition are more independent of each other. Our findings suggest that recycled PVC MPs pose a greater environmental risk than pristine PVC MPs, offering reference for assessing the risks of recycled plastics in freshwater ecosystems.
