RESUMO

PURPOSE: To report a novel surgical approach for the scleral fixation of the Rayner 620 H intraocular lens (IOL) with Gore-Tex suture and its outcomes at 6 months postoperatively. METHODS: 19 consecutive patients who underwent novel surgical approach for the scleral fixation of Rayner 620 H IOL with Gore-Tex suture at Peking Union Medical College Hospital between June 2020 and June 2021 were included. Data on best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), spherical equivalent, total astigmatism/axis, short-term and long-term complications, and corresponding management with a follow-up of 6 months were collected. RESULTS: Nineteen patients (11 men and 8 women) with a mean age of 62.7 ± 10.6 years were included. The median BCVA improved significantly from 0.90 ± 0.90 (Snellen 20/160) preoperatively to 0.20 ± 0.30 (Snellen 20/32) at postoperative 6 months follow-up (P < 0.001). The stratification of the accuracy of refractive outcomes was 53% of patients within ± 0.5 D and 84% of patients within ± 1.0 D of the refractive target. Corneal edema (n = 3, 16%) and increased intraocular pressure (IOP) (n = 4, 11%) were short-term complications. Long-term complications included increased IOP (n = 1, 5%), and macular edema (n = 1, 5%). CONCLUSION: The novel surgical approach for scleral fixation of the Rayner 620 H IOL with Gore-Tex suture is a reasonable option for patients who need secondary IOL placement without adequate capsular support.

RESUMO

Alginate is an acidic polysaccharide mainly extracted from kelp or sargassum, which comprises 40% of the dry weight of algae. It is a linear polymer consisting of ß-D-mannuronic acid (M) and α-L-guluronic acid (G) with 1,4-glycosidic linkages, possessing various applications in the food and nutraceutical industries due to its unique physicochemical properties and health benefits. Additionally, alginate is able to form a gel matrix in the presence of Ca2+ ions. Alginate properties also affect its gelation, including its structure and experimental conditions such as pH, temperature, crosslinker concentration, residence time and ionic strength. These features of this polysaccharide have been widely used in the food industry, including in food gels, controlled-release systems and film packaging. This review comprehensively covers the analysis of alginate and discussed the potential applications of alginate in the food industry and nutraceuticals.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The immediate loading protocol for 2-implant mandibular overdentures has been widely reported. Nevertheless, the clinical effects reported in different articles are quite different. PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was to compare the clinical effects of immediate and delayed loading of 2-implant mandibular overdentures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The review followed the guidelines of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, ScienceDirect, CBM, CNKI, and Wan Fang databases were searched electronically for RCTs published before March 25, 2020. Two authors independently conducted literature screening, quality assessment, and data extraction. The outcomes of interest were implant failure rate, marginal bone loss (MBL), implant stability quotient (ISQ), periotest value (PTV), and patient satisfaction. RESULTS: A total of 2498 unduplicated records were identified. After full-text analysis, 7 eligible RCTs were included. All studies were followed for at least 12 months, and the meta-analysis was based on this. The meta-analysis showed that the implant failure rate in the immediate group was higher than that in the delayed group, but there was no statistically significant difference (I2=0%; n=7; risk difference [RD]=0.03; 95% confidence interval [CI]=-0.01 to 0.08). The difference of MBL between immediate and delayed loading was not significant (I2=88%; n=6; mean difference [MD]=-0.04; 95% CI=-0.16 to 0.24). Because of the limited articles reporting on ISQ, PTV, and patient satisfaction, no quantitative analysis was conducted for these outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Although the implant failure rate was more likely to favor the delayed group, available evidence indicates no statistical difference in implant failure and marginal bone loss between immediate and delayed loading protocols.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA) was positively correlated with serological hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) levels in hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) positive chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients. We evaluated whether Thymopentin (TP5) and interferon (IFN-a) had a synergic effect on HBV cccDNA and the effect of TP5 addition therapy on HBsAg clearance in CHB patients. Real-time PCR experiments were performed to test cccDNA in HepG2.2.15 cells. 45 HBeAg-positive CHB patients had been distributed into two groups randomly. Treatment group: 23 patients were treated with a 24-week TP5 on the basis of the treatment entecavir (ETV) and peginterferon alfa-2a (PegIFN alpha-2a). Control group: 22 patients were treated with ETV and PegIFNa-2a. The study period was 72 weeks. In HepG2.2.15 cells, TP5 5ug/ml and 10ug/ml respectively combined with IFN-a 2ku/ml could potently inhibit cccDNA level at 72 hours (P<0.05). In clinical study, mean HBsAg levels in two groups are not significantly different at different time points (p=0.112). However, changes of mean HBsAg levels in TP5 add-on group at different time points are significantly different (p<0.05). Patients with HBsAg levels <1500IU/ml in control group had higher HBsAg levels compared with patients with HBsAg levels <1500IU/ml in TP5 add-on group (P=0.019). The latter had the most pronounced HBsAg reduction. TP5 and IFN had a synergic effect on inhibiting cccDNA levels in HepG2.2.15 cells; Patients in treatment group showed no extra side effects compared with the control group. 24 weeks TP5 add-on treatment was safe and had a tendency to accelerate the decline of HBsAg when HBV-DNA was undetectable.

High cost and high viscosity of ionic liquid restricted its commercial application in pretreatment of lignocellulose. Water and ethanol were used as additive in [EMIM][OAc] to pretreat corn cob at moderate temperature (< 100 °C). It was found that enzyme hydrolysis (EH) sugar yield was increased with the increase of IL content. The largest EH sugar yield of 68.8% was obtained when pure IL was used. However, for [EMIM][OAc]/ethanol, the EH sugar yield as high as 66.9% was gained when the IL content was 80%, which was comparable to that for pure IL pretreatment. In addition, Kamlet-Taft parameter was calculated to characterize the polarity solvency of binary liquid phase, to illustrate the underlying reason for the increase of EH sugar and the lignin removal. Finally, to demonstrate the crystalline and microstructure change after pretreatment, XRD and SEM were performed for the raw materials and the pretreated samples.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the genetic basis for a child with Leigh syndrome. METHODS: Clinical features and laboratory test of the patient were analyzed. Sanger sequencing and multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) of the mitochondrial genome were carried out. Next generation sequencing (NGS) was used to capture and sequence nuclear genes related to mitochondrial structure and function. RESULTS: The child presented with developmental delay, unsteady gait, falling episodes, bilateral upper extremity tremor, muscle hypertonia, convulsions, and mouth angle asymmetry. Serum lactic acid was significantly increased. Cranial MRI showed abnormal signal in bilateral cerebellar hemispheres, bilateral basal ganglia, left thalamus, and corona radiata. Her mother and brother did not show any anomalies. Sanger sequencing revealed the child, her mother and brother all carried the MT-ND3 m.10191 T>C mutation, with heterogeneous rates respectively being 74.34%, 9.73%, and 6.28%. MLPA revealed heterogeneity of (MT-ND6, MTCYB-390nt)] deletion in all three individuals. No significant mutation was found by NGS sequencing of the children, their parents and brother. CONCLUSION: Leigh syndrome can be caused by the simultaneous existence of multiple mitochondrial genes, and multiple mutations may play a synergic role in the occurrence of the disease.

Six different environmental samples were applied to enrich microbial consortia for efficient degradation of corn stalk, under the thermophilic and mesophilic conditions. The consortium obtained from anaerobic digested sludge under thermophilic condition (TC-Y) had the highest lignocellulose-degrading activity. The CO2 yield was 246.73 mL/g VS in 23 days, meanwhile, the maximum CO2 production rate was 15.48 mL/(CO2·d), which was 28.75% and 52.27% higher than that under mesophilic condition, respectively. The peak value of cellulase activity reached 0.105 U/mL, which was at least 34.61% higher than the other groups. In addition, 49.5% of corn stalk was degraded in 20 days, moreover, the degradation ratio of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin can reach 52.76%, 62.45% and 42.23%, respectively. Microbial consortium structure analysis indicated that the TC-Y contained the phylum of Gemmatimonadetes, Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, Planctomycetes, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria. Furthermore, the Pseudoxanthomonas belonging to GammaProteobacteria might be the key bacterial group for the lignocellulose degradation. These results indicated the capability of degrading un-pretreated corn stalk and the potential for further investigation and application of TC-Y.

Biomineralization processes govern the formation of hierarchical hard tissues such as bone and teeth in living organisms, and mimicking these processes could lead to the design of new materials with specialized properties. However, such advances require structural characterization of the proteins guiding biomineral formation to understand and mimic their impact. In their "active" form, biomineralization proteins are bound to a solid surface, severely limiting our ability to use many conventional structure characterization techniques. Here, solid-state NMR spectroscopy was applied to study the intermolecular interactions of amelogenin, the most abundant protein present during the early stages of enamel formation, in self-assembled oligomers bound to hydroxyapatite. Intermolecular dipolar couplings were identified that support amelogenin dimer formation stabilized by residues toward the C-termini. These dipolar interactions were corroborated by molecular dynamics simulations. A ß-sheet structure was identified in multiple regions of the protein, which is otherwise intrinsically disordered in the absence of hydroxyapatite. To our knowledge, this is the first intermolecular protein-protein interaction reported for a biomineralization protein, representing an advancement in understanding enamel development and a new general strategy toward investigating biomineralization proteins.

PURPOSE: GOLPH3 has been shown to be involved in glioma proliferation. In this study, we aimed to demonstrate that GOLPH3 can serve as a target for glioma gene therapy. METHODS: During the experiment, cationic liposomes with angiopep-2 (A2-CL) were used to deliver siGOLPH3 crossing the blood-brain barrier and reaching the glioma. RESULTS: At the cellular level, the A2-CL/siGOLPH3 could silence GOLPH3 and then effectively inhibited the proliferation of cells. In vivo experiments, using U87-GFP-Luci-bearing BALB/c mouse models, we demonstrated that A2-CL could deliver GOLPH3-siRNA specifically to glioma and effectively inhibit glioma growth. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that GOLPH3 has great potential as a target for the gene therapy of glioma and is of great value in precise medical applications.

PURPOSE: To examine the effects of in situ laser fenestration and subsequent balloon dilation (noncompliant vs cutting) on the graft fabric of 4 aortic stent-graft models. METHOD: In an in vitro setup, the Zenith TX2, Talent, Endurant, and Anaconda aortic stent-grafts (all made of polyester graft material) were subjected to laser fenestration with a 2.3-mm-diameter probe at low and high energy in a physiologic saline solution followed by balloon dilation of the hole. For the first series of tests, 6-mm-diameter noncompliant balloons were used and replaced for the second series by 6-mm-diameter cutting balloons. Each procedure was performed 5 times (5 fenestrations per balloon type). The fenestrations were examined visually and with light and scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS: Each fenestration demonstrated various degrees of fraying and/or tearing regardless of the device. The monofilament twill weave of the Talent endograft tore in the warp direction up to 7.09±0.46 mm at high energy compared with 2.41±0.26 mm for the Endurant multifilament device. The fenestrations of the 3 endografts with multifilament weave (Zenith, Anaconda, and Endurant) showed more fraying; fenestration areas in the multifilament Endurant were >10 mm2 at low and high energy. The fenestrations were free of melted fibers, but minor blackening of the filaments was observed in all devices. Overall, the cutting balloons resulted in worse tearing and damage. Of note, the edges of the dilated laser-formed fenestrations of the Talent and the Endurant grafts demonstrated evidence of additional shredded yarns. CONCLUSION: In situ fenestration does not cause any melting of the polyester; however, the observed structural damage to the fabric construction must be carefully considered. Cutting balloons caused various levels of tearing compared to the noncompliant balloons and cannot be recommended for use in this application. Rather, noncompliant balloons should be employed, but only with endografts constructed from multifilament yarns. The use of in situ fenestration must be restricted to urgent and emergent cases until long-term durability can be determined.

Lipid remodeling is crucial for hypoxic tolerance in animals, whilst little is known about the hypoxia-induced lipid dynamics in plants. Here we performed a mass spectrometry-based analysis to survey the lipid profiles of Arabidopsis rosettes under various hypoxic conditions. We observed that hypoxia caused a significant increase in total amounts of phosphatidylserine, phosphatidic acid and oxidized lipids, but a decrease in phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE). Particularly, significant gains in the polyunsaturated species of PC, PE and phosphatidylinositol, and losses in their saturated and mono-unsaturated species were evident during hypoxia. Moreover, hypoxia led to a remarkable elevation of ceramides and hydroxyceramides. Disruption of ceramide synthases LOH1, LOH2 and LOH3 enhanced plant sensitivity to dark submergence, but displayed more resistance to submergence under light than wild type. Consistently, levels of unsaturated very-long-chain (VLC) ceramide species (22:1, 24:1 and 26:1) predominantly declined in the loh1, loh2 and loh3 mutants under dark submergence. In contrast, significant reduction of VLC ceramides in the loh1-1 loh3-1 knockdown double mutant and lacking of VLC unsaturated ceramides in the ads2 mutants impaired plant tolerance to both dark and light submergences. Evidence that C24:1-ceramide interacted with recombinant CTR1 protein and inhibited its kinase activity in vitro, enhanced ER-to-nucleus translocation of EIN2-GFP and stabilization of EIN3-GFP in vivo, suggests a role of ceramides in modulating CTR1-mediated ethylene signaling. The dark submergence-sensitive phenotypes of loh mutants were rescued by a ctr1-1 mutation. Thus, our findings demonstrate that unsaturation of VLC ceramides is a protective strategy for hypoxic tolerance in Arabidopsis.

Nano-sized molecularly imprinted polymers for tiliroside were successfully prepared by a precipitation polymerization method. Acrylamide, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, azobisisobutyronitrile, and acetonitrile/dimethyl sulfoxide were used as functional monomer, cross-linker, initiator, and porogen, respectively. The structural features and morphological characterization of tiliroside-imprinted polymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The adsorption experiments indicated that the tiliroside-imprinted polymers exhibited high selective recognition property to tiliroside. Scatchard analysis indicated that the homogeneous-binding sites were formed in the polymers. The selectivity test revealed that the adsorption capacity and selectivity of polymers to tiliroside was significantly higher than that of rutin, astragalin, and kaempferol. Finally, the tiliroside-imprinted polymers were employed as adsorbents in solid-phase extraction for the extraction of tiliroside from the ethyl acetate extract of the flowers of Edgeworthia gardneri (wall.) Meisn. The results demonstrated that the extraction recoveries of tiliroside ranged from 69.3 to 73.5% by using tiliroside-imprinted polymers coupled with solid-phase extraction method. These results indicated that the tiliroside-based molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction method was proven to be an effective technique for the separation and enrichment of tiliroside from natural medicines.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical efficacy of combination therapy with peg-IFNalpha and adefovir (CPIA) in women who were hepatfis B virus (HBV) carriers and had just given birth and received telbivudine (LdT) during pregnancy for prevention of mother-to-child transmission. METHODS: One-hundred-and-fifty third trimester-pregnant women who were HBV carriers with highly-viremic were treated with LdT until time of birth. After delivery, those women with alanine aminotransferase (ALT) level exceeding two times the upper limit of normal and HBV DNA level that had decreased more than 31 gIU/mL or hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) titer that had decreased more than 50% were switched to CPIA for 96 weeks. RESULTS: Following delivery, 45 of the women were switched to the CPIA treatment, of which 91.1% (41/45) achieved virological response, 55.6% (25/45) achieved HBeAg clearance or seroconversion, and 26.7% (12/45) achieved hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) clearance or seroconversion.The immediate post-delivery (and pre-CPIA) levels of HBeAg and HBV DNA were negatively associated with HBeAg clearance. Ninety-eight of the total study participants stopped the LdT treatment and there were no cases of significant deterioration of liver function. CONCLUSION: Pregnant women who are HBV carriers and receive LdT for protection against mother-to-child transmission, and who show significant ALT elevation and decreased HBeAg titer and/or reduced HBV DNA after delivery, may be good candidates for the CPIA therapy following delivery.

Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is a multifunctional peptide that can enhance osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs). However, it remains unclear whether IGF-1 can promote osteogenic differentiation of human dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs). In our study, DPSCs were isolated from the impacted third molars, and treated with IGF-1. Osteogenic differentiation abilities were investigated. We found that IGF-1 activated the mTOR signaling pathway during osteogenic differentiation of DPSCs. IGF-1 also increased the expression of runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), osteocalcin (OCN), osterix (OSX) and collagen type I (COL I) during this process. Rapamycin, an mTOR inhibitor, blocked osteogenic differentiation induced by IGF-1. Meanwhile, CCK-8 assay and flow cytometry results demonstrated that 10-200 ng/mL IGF-1 could enhance proliferation ability of DPSCs and 100 ng/mL was the optimal concentration. In summary, IGF-1 could promote proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of DPSCs via mTOR pathways, which might have clinical implications for osteoporosis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of three acidoid bleaching agents on tooth color and dental hard tissues. METHODS: Bovine tooth blocks with 5 mm x 3 mm enamel surface exposure were randomly divided into four groups: white vinegar group (group A),apple vinegar group (group B), 30% hydrogen peroxid group (group C) and deionized water (group D), each containing ninety blocks. In each group, the tooth blocks were further equally divided into three sub groups, exposing to their respective bleaching agents for 30 s, 1 min and 3 min, respectively. The experiment was performed under simulated oral environment. The changes in color,microhardness and morphological characteristics of the tooth blocks were tested by ShadeEye NCC,microhardness tester and SEM. RESULTS: Tooth blocks exposed to white vinegar had the most notable decrease in hardness, changes in color and morphological characteristics enamel surface. CONCLUSION: White vinegar, apple vinegar and hydrogen peroxidhave bleaching effects on teeth, but white vinegar may causehigher levels of damage to the hardness and surface configuration of teeth.

The utilization of bioderived flame retardants in biodegradable poly (lactic acid) (PLA) has profound practical implications for extending the widespread application of PLA composites and protecting the environment. Nevertheless, there are still certain challenges that require prompt attention, especially the ineffectiveness of bio-based flame retardants and their deterioration of the mechanical properties of PLA. This work introduced triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC), which has multiple epoxy functions, into the self-assembly process of phytic acid (PA) and chitosan (CS). The epoxy-modified bioderived flame retardant PA@CS-TGIC (PCT) was well dispersed in the PLA matrix and had a strong interfacial adhesion, while also TGIC had a synergistic char-forming effect. By compounding epoxy-modified ammonium polyphosphate (MAPP), 3%PCT/MAPP-PLA composites may reach a LOI value of 28.8 % and UL-94 V-0 rating. Simultaneously, the melting droplets had been considerably reduced. Tensile strength of the 3%PCT/MAPP-PLA composites was 67.0 MPa, 10.8 % higher than that of pure PLA. This work paves a new avenue for the development of PLA composites with robust mechanical and flame retardant properties.

In high molecular weight poly(L-lactic acid)/poly(D-lactic acid) (HMW PLLA/PDLA) blends, the construction of exclusive stereocomplex crystals (SC) with high crystallinity and strong melt memory remains a great challenge. In the present study, various norbornene dicarboxylate complexes (TMXNa, Mg, Al, or Ca) were employed as the stereo-selective nucleating agents (NAs), and their effect on the crystallization characteristics, rheological behavior, and heat resistance of PLLA/PDLA blends were thoroughly studied. Strikingly, TMX-Al facilitated the construction of exclusive SC with over 50 % crystallinity and excellent melt memory. The dense SC crystals network structure boosted the heat resistance of L/D-xAl blends with a VST as high as 145 °C. The strengthened intermolecular interaction fostered the generation of pre-ordered structure in the melt and enhanced chain interdiffusion, which contributed to intermolecular nucleation and SC crystallization in L/D-xAl blend. This study opens up a new avenue for melt processing and application development of SC-PLA materials.

Aristolochic acids (AAs) naturally occurring in the herbal genus Aristolochia are associated with a high risk of kidney failure, multiple tumors and cancers. However, approaches with high selectivity and rapidity for measuring AAs in biological samples are still inadequate. Inspired by the mechanism of AAs-induced nephrotoxicity, we designed a hybrid magnetic polymer-porous agarose (denoted as MNs@SiO2M@DNV-A), mimicking the effect of basic and aromatic residues of organic anion transporter 1 (OAT1) for efficient enriching aristolochic acid I (AA I) and aristolochic acid II (AA II) in the plasma. The monomers of vinylbenzyl trimethylammonium chloride (VBTAC), N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NVP) and divinylbenzene (DVB) were employed to construct the polymer layer, which provided a selective adsorption for AAs by multiple interactions. The porous agarose shell contributed to remove interfering proteins in the plasma samples. A magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) based on the proposed composite enhanced the selectivity toward AA I and AA II in the plasma samples. In combination of HPLC analysis, the proposed method was proved to be applicable to fast and specific quantification of AAs in blood samples, which was characterized by a good linearity, high sensitivity, acceptable recovery, excellent repeatability and satisfactory reusability.

Aristolochic acid nephropathy (AAN) has drawn increasing public attention. Organic anion transporters (OATs) are considered to be responsible for mediating nephrotoxicity of aristolochic acids (AAs), as AAs are typical OAT1 substrates that exhibit anionic properties and contain one hydrophobic domain. Inspired by the OAT1 three-dimensional structure or substrate/protein interactions involved in transport, we designed a magnetic polymeric hybrid, mimicking the effect of basic and aromatic residues of OAT1, for efficient enriching aristolochic acid I (AA I) and aristolochic acid II (AA II) in Traditional Chinese patent medicines (TCPM). N, N-dimethylaminopropyl acrylamide (DMAPAm) was used as a cationic monomer and copolymerized with divinylbenzene (DVB) onto the surface of monodisperse magnetic nanoparticles (denoted as MNs@SiO2T-DvbDam). The magnetic polymer hybrid demonstrated high selectivity and capacity for AAs, which was mainly attributed to (1) electrostatic interactions from the cationic or basic moiety of DMAPAm and (2) the hydrophobic and π-π stacking interactions from the aromatic ring of DVB. Additionally, the surface of the hybrid exhibited amphiphilic property according to the ionization of DMAPAm, thus improving the compatibility of the adsorbent with the aqueous sample matrix. This strategy was proven to be robust in the analysis of real drug samples, which was characterized by a good linearity, high recovery and satisfactory reusability. This work confirmed that the proposed tool could be a promising candidate for enhancing the extraction selectivity of AAs in Traditional Chinese medicines (TCM).

OBJECTIVE: The current dental resin composites often suffer from polymerization shrinkage, which can lead to microleakage and potentially result in recurring tooth decay. This study presents the synthesis of a novel monomer, (3,9-diethyl-1,5,7,11-tetraoxaspiro[5,5]undecane-3,9-diyl)bis(methylene) bis((2-(3-(prop-1-en-2-yl)phenyl)propan-2-yl)carbamate) (DDTU-IDI), and evaluates its effect in the formulation of low-shrinkage dental resin composites. METHODS: DDTU-IDI was synthesized through a two-step reaction route, with the initial synthesis of the required raw material monomer 3,9-diethyl-3,9-dihydroxymethyl-1,5,7,11-tetraoxaspiro-[5,5] undecane (DDTU). The structures were confirmed using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance (1HNMR) spectroscopy. Subsequently, DDTU-IDI was incorporated into Bis-GMA-based composites at varying weight percentages (5, 10, 15, and 20 wt%). The polymerization reaction, degree of conversion, polymerization shrinkage, mechanical properties, physicochemical properties and biocompatibility of the low-shrinkage composites were thoroughly evaluated. Furthermore, the mechanical properties were assessed after a thermal cycling test with 10,000 cycles to determine the stability. RESULTS: The addition of DDTU-IDI at 10, 15, and 20 wt% significantly reduced the polymerization volumetric shrinkage of the experimental resin composites, without compromising the degree of conversion, mechanical and physicochemical properties. Remarkably, at a monomer content of 20 wt%, the polymerization shrinkage was reduced to 1.83 ± 0.53%. Composites containing 10, 15, and 20 wt% DDTU-IDI exhibited lower water sorption and higher contact angle. Following thermal cycling, the composites exhibited no significant decrease in mechanical properties, except for the flexural properties. SIGNIFICANCE: DDTU-IDI has favorable potential as a component which could produce volume expansion and increase rigidity in the development of low-shrinkage dental resin composites. The development of low-shrinkage composites containing DDTU-IDI appears to be a promising strategy for reducing polymerization shrinkage, thereby potentially enhancing the longevity of dental restorations.
