BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is related to impaired oral health and function that causes poor dietary intake, declining the general health of older adults. The role of dietary intake in the association between oral function and nutritional status of Chinese older adults (aged 75 and above) was examined in this cross-sectional study. METHODS: Through the randomized cluster sampling method, 267 older adults living in rural areas of Qingdao, Shandong (aged 81.4 ± 4.3, 75-94 years) were chosen as the primary research participants. A Mini Nutritional Assessment - Short Form was used to determine nutritional status, and Food Frequency Questionnaire and 24-hour Food Intake Recall were used to assess dietary intake. The oral function was evaluated by analyzing the teeth, oral problems, bite force, tongue pressure, lip sealing pressure, chewing function questionnaire, whole saliva flow rate, 10-Item Eating Assessment Tool, and water swallow test. RESULTS: Based on the MNA-SF score, it was divided into a well-nourished group and a malnutrition group, with the malnutrition group comprising 40.6% of participants. The participants in the malnutrition group showed a higher rate of xerostomia, lower bite force, tongue pressure, and lip sealing pressure, and higher Chewing Function Questionnaire and 10-Item Eating Assessment Tool scores. Furthermore, their plant fat, iron, cereals and potatoes, vegetables, fruits, and seafood intake were relatively low. The regression model indicated that exercise frequency, stroke, chewing and swallowing function, intake of vegetables and fruits were risk factors for nutritional status of older adults. CONCLUSION: Malnutrition was relatively common among the Chinese older adults aged 75 and above, and it was significantly correlated with exercise frequency, stroke, chewing and swallowing function, and intake of vegetables and fruits. Therefore, nutrition management should be carried out under the understanding and guidance of the oral function and dietary intake of the older adults.

OBJECTIVE: The current studies have yielded inconclusive findings regarding the connection between periodontitis  and oral cancer (OC). Therefore, our goal is to elucidate this relationship. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a thorough search of electronic databases (EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library) up to September 2023. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was applied to assess study quality. To evaluate potential publication bias, both a funnel plot and Egger's test were employed. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis was conducted to explore the source of heterogeneity when the I2 statistic exceeded 50%. RESULTS: This systematic review encompassed 16 studies, involving a total of 6,032 OC patients and 7,432 healthy controls. Our meta-analysis, incorporating data from nine studies, revealed a significant correlation between periodontitis and the risk of OC (OR [odds ratio] = 2.94, 95% CI [confidence interval] (2.13, 4.07); five studies, 6,927 participants; low certainty of evidence). Findings also suggested that individuals with more than 15 missing teeth may have a heightened risk of OC (OR = 1.91, 95% CI (1.01, 3.62)). Furthermore, clinical attachment loss (CAL) and decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) in OC patients were more pronounced compared to the control group (CAL, SMD = 1.94, 95% CI (0.22, 3.66); DMFT, SMD = 0.65, 95% CI (0.12, 1.18)). CONCLUSION: Periodontitis may serve as a potential risk factor for OC. However, caution is warranted in interpreting these findings due to the substantial level of heterogeneity.

RESUMO

To address the limitations of norcantharidin (NCTD) in clinical applications, including restricted tumor accumulation and intense irritation, we have developed a new derivative of NCTD with (S)-1-benzyl-3-pyrrolidinol, which can be actively loaded into liposomes to achieve drug encapsulation and sustained release properties by using pH gradient loading technique. Cytotoxicity tests against cancer cell lines (Hepa 1-6 and 4 T1 cells) have demonstrated that this derivative exhibits comparable activity to NCTD in vitro. The NCTD derivative can be efficiently loaded into liposomes with high encapsulation efficiency (98.7%) and high drug loading (32.86%). Tolerability and antitumor efficacy studies showed that the liposomal NCTD derivative was well tolerated at intravenous injection doses of 3 folds higher than the parent drug solution, while significantly improved anticancer activity in vivo was achieved. This liposomal nanodrug could become a potent and safe NCTD formulation alternative for cancer therapy.

Plastic pollution in the soil ecosystem is currently receiving worldwide attention. However, little is known whether the presence of microplastics (MPs) in soil will affect the environmental behavior of pesticide residues in soil. Here, the effect of the addition of new mulch MPs (New-MPs), aged mulch MPs (Aged-MPs) and biodegradable mulch MPs (BioD-MPs) on the adsorption and degradation behaviors of two pesticides (imidacloprid and flumioxazin) in soil was investigated. Three MPs slowed down rapid adsorption stage of pesticides in soil and delayed the time to reach adsorption equilibrium. Adsorption rates: Soil > Soil + New-MPs > Soil + Aged-MPs > Soil + BioD-MPs. Three MPs enhanced the adsorption strength of the soil system for the two pesticides, and the aging treatment of the MPs enhanced this effect. Three MPs affected the degradation process of the two pesticides. New-MPs promoted the degradation of two pesticides imidacloprid and flumioxazin, and the degradation half-lives were shortened to 0.93 and 0.85 times, respectively; while Aged-Mps and BioD-MPs delayed the degradation process of two pesticides, and the degradation half-lives were extended to 1.64 times and 1.21 times, respectively. The effect was more significant with the increase of MPs and pesticides concentration. Pesticide polarity, surface structure and functional groups of MPs are potentially important reasons for the differences in adsorption and degradation of MPs-soil systems. Our findings provide a deep insight into understanding the mechanism of interaction between MPs and pesticide residues in soil environment.

As microplastics became the focus of global attention, the hazards of plastic plasticizers (PAEs) have gradually attracted people's attention. Agricultural soil is one of its hardest hit areas. However, current research of its impact on soil ecology only stops at the microorganism itself, and there is still lack of conclusion on the impact of soil metabolism. To this end, three most common PAEs (Dimethyl phthalate: DMP, Dibutyl phthalate: DBP and Bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate: DEHP) were selected and based on high-throughput sequencing and metabolomics platforms, the influence of PAEs residues on soil metabolic functions were revealed for the first time. PAEs did not significantly changed the alpha diversity of soil bacteria in the short term, but changed their community structure and interfered with the complexity of community symbiosis network. Metabolomics indicated that exposure to DBP can significantly change the soil metabolite profile. A total of 172 differential metabolites were found, of which 100 were up-regulated and 72 were down-regulated. DBP treatment interfered with 43 metabolic pathways including basic metabolic processes. In particular, it interfered with the metabolism of residual steroids and promoted the metabolism of various plasticizers. In addition, through differential labeling and collinear analysis, some bacteria with the degradation potential of PAEs, such as Gordonia, were excavated.

BACKGROUND: Patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate were associated with different nasomaxillary complex from the normal population. Although the biomechanical effects of conventional rapid palatal expansion (Hyrax expansion) and bone-borne rapid palatal expansion (micro-implant-assisted expansion) in non-cleft patients have been identified by multiple studies, little is known in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate. The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare the biomechanical effects of the conventional and bone-borne palatal expanders in a late adolescence with unilateral cleft lip and palate. METHODS: A cone beam CT scan of a late adolescence with unilateral cleft lip and palate was selected to construct the three-dimensional finite element models of teeth and craniofacial structures. The models of conventional and born-borne palatal expanders were established to simulate the clinical maxillary expansion. The geometric nonlinear theory was applied to evaluate the Von Mises stress distribution and displacements in craniofacial structures and teeth. RESULTS: Bone-borne palatal expander achieved more transverse movement than conventional palatal expander in the whole mount of craniofacial regions, and the maximum amount of expansion was occurred anteriorly along the alveolar ridge on cleft-side. The expanding force from born-borne palatal expander resulted in more advancement in nasomaxillary complex than it in conventional palatal expander, especially in the anterior area of the minor segment of maxilla. Stresses from the both expanders distributed in similar patterns, but larger magnitudes and ranges were generated using the bone-borne expander around the maxillary buttresses and pterygoid plates of sphenoid bone. The maximum expanding stresses from born-borne palatal expander were concentrated on palatal slope supporting minscrews, whereas those from conventional palatal expander were concentrated on the anchoring molars. In addition, the buccal tipping effect of teeth generated using the bone-borne expander was less than it using the conventional palatal expander. CONCLUSION: Bone-borne expander generated enhanced skeletal expansion at the levels of alveolar and palate in transversal direction, where the miniscrews contributed increased expanding forces to maxillary buttresses and decreased forces to buccal alveolar. Bone-borne expanders presented a superiority in correcting the asymmetric maxilla without surgical assistant in late adolescence with unilateral cleft lip and palate.

Nowadays, the non-specific adsorption of biomolecules is a key issue in numerous fields. Herein, an improved antifouling molecule was synthesized by grafting phenol with oligopoly (ethylene glycol), named (4-(2-(2-ethoxyethoxy) ethoxy) phenol (EEP). An ideal antifouling polymer coating (PEEP) was synthesized by the mechanism of electropolymerization of phenol. Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), a sensitive mass sensor, was used to dynamically monitor both the modification and anti-protein adhesion (with bovine serum albumin as the model) process. Quantitatively, less proteins were observed to adhere to the modified electrode (277.8 ng for bare GCE and 8.88 ng for the modified GCE). Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electrochemical methods were used to study the coatings in detail. In this study, EEP was synthesized for the electrochemical preparation of an antifouling coating and characterized by QCM and electrochemical methods. The mild preparation environment (lower potential window and in phosphate buffered saline) and one-step method enable potential applications of PEEP in the field of biomaterials and biosensors.

Colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC), in which chronic inflammation is a well-recognized carcinogen, requires concurrent anti-inflammation and antitumor treatments in the clinic. Herein, we report polyethylene glycol (PEG)-coated (PEGylated) ultrasmall rhodium nanodots (Rh-PEG NDs) can serve as a metallic nanozyme with reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) scavenging properties as well as photothermal activities for anti-inflammation and antitumor theranostics in colon diseases. Benefiting from multienzyme activities against RONS, Rh-PEG NDs can decrease the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6), resulting in good anti-inflammatory effect on dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis. By virtue of high photothermal conversion efficiency (48.9%), Rh-PEG NDs demonstrate complete ablation of CT-26 colon tumor without any recurrence. Most importantly, Rh-PEG NDs exhibit good biocompatibility both at the cellular and animal levels. Our findings provide a paradigm to utilize metallic nanozymes for the potential management of colon diseases.

Methyl siloxanes are widely found in the environment, but little is known about the distributions of these chemicals in soils especially in areas where they are manufactured. We determined the concentrations of four cyclic (D3-D6) and 13 linear methyl siloxanes (L4-L16) in the soils from a siloxane-manufacturing site in China; the total concentrations of these 17 siloxanes (TSi) in the soils were 17.1-3,191 (median, 134) ng/g. We did not find extremely high concentrations of siloxanes in the soils. The median concentrations of total cyclic siloxanes (TCSi) were approximately sevenfold higher than those of total linear congeners. Hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane and octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane contributed a median of 59.7% and 20.3% of the TSi concentrations, respectively. Higher concentrations of soil TCSi were found in the silicone-manufacturing area relative to the other study areas. Source analysis indicated that industrial activities contributed substantially to soil siloxanes, in addition to the contribution of the siloxane emissions from specific consumer products. We calculated that the median values of daily TSi intakes through soil ingestion were 0.021 and 0.138 ng/kg-body weight/day for adults and children, respectively, under high exposure scenarios. Although our estimated daily intakes of the chemicals from soils were low, more research is required to improve our understanding of the health risks posed to humans exposed to siloxanes through other pathways.

Combinational administration of photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemotherapy (CT) shows great potential in improving the efficiency of tumor treatment. Herein, we designed a novel nanocomposite Pt@Bi2Te3 composed of bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) nanoparticles and platinum(IV) prodrugs (Pt) for PTT-CT combination therapy. The obtained Bi2Te3 was synthesized by a simple solvothermal method and modified by polyethylene glycol, which exhibited excellent photothermal (PT) efficiency and stability and could also serve as a bimodal bioimaging contrast agent in PT and photoacoustic (PA) imaging. In vitro experiment results showed that the nanocomposite Pt@Bi2Te3 could effectively increase the uptake of platinum in cancer cells, which could kill tumor cells through the combined effect of PTT and CT. Furthermore, combination therapy of cancer in vivo was achieved with obvious tumor-growth inhibition without inducing observed side effects. We revealed the great potential of Bi2Te3 nanocomposites in increasing therapeutic efficiency by PTT-CT therapy and PA-PT imaging.

Marine is the harshest corrosive environment where almost all marine underwater equipment and facilities undergo corrosion caused by marine microorganisms. With the development of marine resources globally, the marine engineering and relevant infrastructures have increased exponentially. Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) leads to severe safety accidents and great economic losses. The specific aggregation of corrosive microbial communities and their interactions with materials conform to a typical ecological adaptation mechanism. On the one hand, corrosive biofilms in the marine environment selectively colonize on a specific steel substrate by utilizing their complex community composition and various extracellular polymeric substances; on the other hand, the elemental composition and surface microstructure of different engineering steels affect the microbial community and corrosive process. MIC in the marine environment is a dynamic process evolving with the formation of corrosive biofilms and corrosion products. In this mini-review, the interactions between corrosive biofilm and steel substrates are explored and discussed, especially those conducted in situ in the marine environment. Herein, the important role of iron in the dynamic process of marine corrosion is highlighted.

BACKGROUND: Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is commonly used for cement-augmented pedicle screw instrumentation (CAPSI) to improve the fixation stability and reduce the risk of screw loosening in the osteoporotic thoracolumbar spine. Biomechanical researches have shown that various dose of cement (1-3 ml) can be injected to enhance screw stability. To date, there have been no studies on the relationship between adjacent segment degeneration and the volume of PMMA. This study aimed to explore the influence of CAPSI with different volumes of PMMA in osteoporotic lumbar vertebrae over adjacent segments by using finite element analysis. METHODS: Seven different finite element models were reconstructed and simulated under different loading conditions, including (1) an intact model, (2) three single-level CAPSI models with different volumes of PMMA (1, 1.73, and 2.5 ml), and (3) three double-level CAPSI models with different volumes of PMMA (1, 1.73, and 2.5 ml). To improve the accuracy of the finite element analysis, the models of the injectable pedicle screw and bone cement were created by using a three-dimensional scanning machine and the CAPSI patient's CT data, respectively. The range of motion (ROM), the stress of intervertebral discs, and the stress of facet in the adjacent segment were comparatively analyzed among the different models. RESULTS: The ROMs of the different segments were compared with experimental data, with good agreement under the different load conditions (21.3°, 13.55°, 13.99°, and 6.11° in flexion, extension, bending, and rotation at L3-S1 level, respectively). Compared with the intact model, the ROM, disc stresses, and facet stress in adjacent segments were found to be higher in the six operative models. Otherwise, with a larger volume of PMMA injected, the ROM, disc stresses, and facet stress slightly increased at the adjacent segment. However, the differences were insignificant with the biggest difference less than 3.8%. CONCLUSIONS: CAPSI could increase the incidence of disk degeneration in the adjacent segment, while within a certain range, different volumes of PMMA provided an approximate impact over the adjacent segment degeneration.

BACKGROUND: The increase of augmented level and bone cement dose are accompanied by the rising incidence of cement leakage (CL) of cement-augmented pedicle screw instrumentation (CAPSI). But the effect and potential risks of the application of CAPSI to osteoporotic lumbar degenerative disease (LDD) have not been studied in the case of multilevel fixation. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness and potential complications of using multilevel CAPSI for patients with osteoporotic LDD. METHODS: A total of 93 patients with multilevel LDD were divided into the CAPSI group (46 subjects) and the conventional pedicle screw (CPS) group (47 subjects), including 75 cases for three levels and 18 cases for four levels. Relevant data were compared between two groups, including baseline data, clinical results, and complications. RESULTS: In the CAPSI group, a total of 336 augmented screws was placed bilaterally. The CL was observed in 116 screws (34.52%). Three cemented screws (0.89%) were found loosened during the follow-up and the overall fusion rate was 93.47%. For perioperative complications, two patients (4.35%) experienced pulmonary cement embolism (PCE), one patient augmented vertebral fracture, and three patients (6.52%) wound infection. And in the CPS group, thirty-three screws (8.46%) suffered loosening in cranial and caudal vertebra with a fusion rate of 91.49%. The operation time and hospital stay of CAPSI group were longer than the CPS group, but CAPSI group has a lower screw loosening percentage (P<0. 05). And in terms of blood loss, perioperative complications, fusion rate, and VAS and ODI scores at the follow-up times, there were no significant differences between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with osteoporotic LDD underwent multilevel CPS fixation have a higher rate of screw loosening in the cranial and caudal vertebra. The application of cemented pedicle screws for multilevel LDD can achieve better stability and less screw loosening, but it also accompanied by longer operating time, higher incidence of CL, PCE and wound infections. Selective cement augmentation of cranial and caudal pedicle screws may be a worthy strategy to decrease the complications.

Shiraia mycelial culture is a promising biotechnological alternative for the production of hypocrellin A (HA), a new photosensitizer for anticancer photodynamic therapy (PDT). The extractive fermentation of intracellular HA in the nonionic surfactant Triton X-100 (TX100) aqueous solution was studied in the present work. The addition of 25 g/L TX100 at 36 h of the fermentation not only enhanced HA exudation to the broth by 15.6-fold, but stimulated HA content in mycelia by 5.1-fold, leading to the higher production 206.2 mg/L, a 5.4-fold of the control on day 9. After the induced cell membrane permeabilization by TX100 addition, a rapid generation of nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was observed. The increase of NO level was suppressed by the scavenger vitamin C (VC) of reactive oxygen species (ROS), whereas the induced H2O2 production could not be prevented by the NO scavenger 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide (PTIO), suggesting that NO production may occur downstream of ROS in the extractive fermentation. Both NO and H2O2 were proved to be involved in the expressions of HA biosynthetic genes (Mono, PKS and Omef) and HA production. NO was found to be able to up-regulate the expression of transporter genes (MFS and ABC) for HA exudation. Our results indicated the integrated role of NO and ROS in the extractive fermentation and provided a practical biotechnological process for HA production.

Lycopene, the aliphatic hydrocarbon carotenoid with abundant bioactivities, has instability, extremely poor water solubility, and low oral bioavailability. The study aimed to develop a highly water-soluble and practical lycopene formulation to improve the oral bioavailability and efficiency of lycopene. Environment-friendly hot-melt extrusion (HME) technique was applied to fabricate lycopene-cyclodextrin-polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG 6000) ternary systems, which possessed highly aqueous solubility (897.665 µg mL-1), almost 32-fold higher than that of the reported lycopene binary inclusion (27.1 ± 3.2 µg mL-1). The dissolution rate was significantly accelerated compared to pure lycopene. The molecular mechanism was further investigated by the integrated experimental and modeling tools. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation revealed lycopene molecule was wrapped within the aggregates of hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-ß-CD) and PEG 6000 through extensive hydrogen bond interactions, which was experimentally validated by DSC, XRD, and FTIR spectrum analysis. The third component PEG 6000 facilitated the process of HME and augmented hydrogen bond interactions with HP-ß-CD. Moreover, lycopene inclusions exhibited significant antitumor activity via inhibiting cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis. The pharmacokinetic studies showed the relative bioavailability of lycopene ternary preparation was up to 313.08% and the Cmax was 4.9-fold higher than that of the marketed tablet. In conclusion, the lycopene cyclodextrin ternary formulation developed by the modified HME techniques is suitable for industrial production, while PEG 6000 plays a vital part in the multicomponent systems to increase solubility, dissolution rate, and oral bioavailability of lycopene. The combination of experimental and computational tools is able to benefit the development of multicomponent formulations accurately and effectively.

High-throughput sequencing was used to visualize microbial biocoenoses on different metallic surfaces and rust layers of highly corroded steels after immersion in coastal marine water for 30 months at Sanya, China. Distinct microbial community compositions were observed on these metallic surfaces. The dominant genus was the copper-tolerant, acid-producing Lactobacillus on copper alloys, the common aerobic surface colonizers Bacillus and Ruegeria on aluminum alloys, and aerobic biofilm-forming Pseudomonas on carbon steel. Most of these are copiotrophic microbes compared to planktonic microbes, which are oligotrophic. Additionally, sulfate-reducing prokaryotes (SRP) were detected in the rust layer, but the dominant genera changed from the outer layer to the inner part. The dominant genera detected in the outer, middle and inner rusts layers were Desulfotomaculum, Desulfonatronum (obligate anaerobe) and Desulfovibiro (electroactive), respectively. Further, the coexistence of methanogens with SRP suggests interspecies interactions.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the incidence, type and risk factors of cement leakage (CL) with cement-augmented pedicle screw instrumentation (CAPSI) in degenerative lumbosacral disease. METHODS: Two hundred and two patients using a total of 950 cement-augmented screws were enrolled. CL was classified into three types: type S: leakage via segmental veins; type B: leakage via basivertebral veins; and type I: leakage via pedicle screw instrumentation to paravertebral soft tissue. The age, gender, operation stage (primary or later stage), body mass index, bone mineral density, the number and type of augmented screw, the position of the tip of screw (lateral or internal part of vertebral body), the position of screw (left or right side), the volume of bone cement, location of the augmented vertebra (lumbar or sacrum), the type of CL and complications were recorded. Binary logistic regression correlation was used to analyze risk factors of veins leakage (type S and type B). RESULTS: The CL was observed in 165 patients (81.68%) and 335 screws (35.26%), leakage types of S, B and I were seen in 255 (76.12%), 77 (22.99%), and 30 (8.96%) of screws, respectively. Besides, double or multiple routes of leakage were seen in 27 screws. Number of augmented screw was a risk factor for vein leakage (OR 0.58; 95% CI 0.44-0.77; P = 0.000). Furthermore, the doses of cement (OR 0.79; 95% CI 0.61-0.99; P = 0.038) and the position of screw (OR 0.39; 95% CI 0.29-0.53; P = 0.000) were identified as risk factors for type S, and the doses of bone cement (OR 0.37; 95% CI 0.25-0.54; P = 0.000) and the position of the tip of screw (OR 0.07; 95% CI 0.04-0.13; P = 0.000) were risk factors for type B. CONCLUSIONS: CAPSI bears a high risk of asymptomatic CL, with a higher rate of leakage into segmental veins and basivertebral veins. As is known, more augmented screws and larger doses of cement are risk factors for veins leakage (type S and type B), while the tip of screw approaching to the midline of the vertebral body is another risk factor to type B. Thus, the CL could be reduced by the amelioration of operative techniques and procedures. These slides can be retrieved under Electronic Supplementary Material.

Streptococcus agalactiae (S. agalactiae) is an important fish pathogen, which has received more attention in the past decade due to the increasing economic losses in the tilapia industry worldwide. As existing effective vaccines of S. agalactiae in fish have obvious disadvantage, to select immunoprotective antigens and package materials would undoubtedly contribute to the development of novel oral vaccines. In the present study, surface immunogenic protein (sip) was selected from the S. agalactiae serovar I a genomes as immunogenic protein in DNA vaccine form with cationic chitosan and biodegradable and biocompatible PLGA. The pcSip plasmid in cationic-PLGA was successfully expressed in tissues of immunized tilapia and the immunogenicity was assessed in tilapia challenge model. A significant increase was observed in the cytokine levels of IL-1ß, TNF-α, CC1, CC2 in spleen and kidney tissues. Furthermore, immunized tilapia conferred different levels of protection against challenge with a lethal dose of highly virulent serovar I a S. agalactiae. Our results indicated that the pcSip plasmid in cationic-PLGA induced high level of antibodies and protection against S. agalactiae infection, could be effective oral DNA vaccine candidates.

The addition of surfactant is a useful strategy to enhance the product yield in submerged fermentation process. In this study, we sought to explore the mechanism for the elicitation of Triton X-100 on production of hypocrellin A (HA) in cultures of Shiraia bambusicola through transcriptomic analysis. Triton X-100 at 2.5% (w/v) not only induced HA biosynthesis in mycelia, but also stimulated the release of HA into the medium. We found 23 of 2463 transcripts, possible candidate genes for HA biosynthesis under Triton X-100 induction. Gene ontology (GO) analysis showed Triton X-100 treatment changed expression of genes involved in transmembrane transport and oxidation-reduction process, indicating that enhanced HA production was mainly due to both elicited biosynthesis in mycelium and the increased membrane permeability for HA release. These data provided new insights into elicitation of surfactants in submerged cultures of fungi.

AIM: The aim of this study was to compare the therapeutic efficacy of transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) with gelatin sponge (GS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) particles for cesarean scar pregnancy (CSP). METHODS: A total of 35 patients with CSP, who were classified into either the GS group (n = 22) or the PVA group (n = 13), underwent TAE and postoperative ultrasound-guided curettage. Their hospital stay, first-scheme success rate, intra-curettage blood loss, serum ß-human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) level, and other indicators were simultaneously recorded. During the follow-up period, time for the serum ß-hCG level to return to normal, time for the return of menstrual cycle, and menstrual blood volume were recorded. RESULTS: Compared with the GS group, patients in the PVA group: (i) were older; (ii) had greater number of abortions or curettages, and had longer times since last cesarean (P < 0.05); (iii) had similar hospital stay and first-scheme success rate (P > 0.05); (iv) had lower, but not significantly different, hemorrhage rate (7.7% vs 36.4%, P = 0.066); (v) had a significantly higher serum ß-hCG level at discharge and a smaller drop in serum ß-hCG level from admission to discharge (P < 0.05); (vi) had a similar time for the serum ß-hCG level to return to normal (P > 0.05); (vii) had a shorter time for the return of menstrual cycle (P = 0.012); and (viii) had a significantly higher incidence of abnormal menstrual blood volume reduction (50.0% vs 8.3%, P = 0.034). CONCLUSION: TAE with either GS or PVA particles for CSP treatment had relatively good efficacy. During the selection of the ideal embolic agent, the patient's age, hemorrhage risk, and requirement for protecting ovarian function and reserving fertility should be comprehensively considered.
