OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the number of diagnoses of oral and maxillofacial lesions in public laboratories after one year of COVID-19 outbreak in Brazil. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study. Biopsies submitted to histopathologic examination from March 2019 to February 2020 (pre-pandemic period) and from April 2020 to March 2021 (pandemic period) in nine Brazilian public oral pathology laboratories were retrieved and the number of diagnoses, types of lesion, and percentage changes during both periods were analyzed. RESULTS: There were 7389 diagnoses in the pre-pandemic period and 2728 in the pandemic era, indicating a reduction of 63.08%. The reduction was 64.23% for benign lesions and 49.48% for malignant lesions, with a 50.64% reduction in squamous cell carcinoma. The largest decreases were observed in April 2020 and January 2021. CONCLUSION: An important reduction in the diagnoses of benign and malignant lesions was noted in the Brazilian public oral pathology laboratories during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic.

PURPOSE: To investigate the contribution of MMP-13 in tumor aggressiveness, by acting on the reorganization of the extracellular matrix, regulating the biological activity of cytokines in odontogenic epithelial lesions, as well as to evaluate the role of EMMPRIN as an inducer of MMP-13. METHODS: Twenty solid ameloblastomas (SAs), 10 unicystic ameloblastomas (UAs), 20 odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs), and 20 adenomatoid odontogenic tumors (OATs) were selected. The expression of MMP-13 and EMMPRIN was evaluated in epithelial/connective tissue by determining the score of immunoreactive cells. RESULTS: Higher concentration of MMP-13 was observed in epithelium of SAs and OKCs (p = 0.316), while in connective, MMP-13 was more expressed in OKCs and UAs (p = 0.213). OKCs exhibited the highest immunoreactivity score for EMMPRIN in the epithelium (p = 0.091). In connective tissue, a larger number of immunoreactive cells were observed in OKCs and UACs (p = 0.357). There was a moderate correlation (r = 0.343/p = 0.004) between MMP-13/EMMPRIN in epithelium and strong correlation (r = 0.474/p < 0.001) in connective tissue. CONCLUSION: We suggest that the OKCs, SAs and UAs presented greater immunoexpression for MMP-13 and EMMPRIN, since they were lesions of more aggressive behavior, with smaller expressions in the AOTs that are admittedly indolent. However, we did not find a statistically significant difference between the expression of MMP-13 and EMMPRIN in lesions studied. The positive correlation found between MMP-13 and EMMPRIN in the epithelial and connective tissue of odontogenic lesions analyzed, seems to be related to the role of EMMPRIN as an inducer of MMP-13 expression.

AIM: To investigate the presence of myofibroblasts (MFBs) in epithelial odontogenic lesions by immunohistochemistry and to correlate the findings with tumor aggressiveness, as well as to analyze the expression of TGF-ß1 and IFN-γ during the differentiation of these cells. METHODS AND RESULTS: Twenty solid ameloblastomas (SAs), 10 unicystic ameloblastomas (UAs), 20 keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOTs), and 20 adenomatoid odontogenic tumors (AOTs) were selected. For evaluation of the presence of MFBs, anti-α-SMA-immunoreactive cells were quantified in connective tissue near the epithelium. The expression of TGF-ß1 and IFN-γ was evaluated in epithelial and connective tissue by determining the percentage of immunoreactive cells. A higher concentration of MFBs was observed in SAs (mean of 30.55), followed by KCOTs (22.50), UAs (20.80), and AOTs (19.15) (P = 0.001). There was no significant correlation between the immunoexpression of TGF-ß1 or IFN-γ and the number of MFBs (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The larger number of MFBs suggests that these cells are one of the factors responsible for the more aggressive biological behavior of these lesions. The lack of correlation between the number of MFBs and immunoexpression of TGF-ß1 and IFN-γ indicates that these proteins are not involved in the differentiation of this type of contractile cell in the lesions studied and that only the use of immunohistochemistry to establish such a correlation is a limiting factor.

PURPOSE: This study aims to report clinicopathologic and imaging features of odontogenic myxomas (OM), highlighting uncommon findings. METHODS: Clinicopathologic and imaging data of OMs diagnosed in the five Brazilian diagnostic pathology centers were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: The series comprised 42 females (68.9%) and 19 males (31.1%), with a 2.2:1 female-to-male ratio and a mean age of 34.5±15.4 years (range: 4-80). Clinically, most OMs presented as painless intraoral swelling (n = 36; 70.6%) in the mandible (n=37; 59.7%). Multilocular lesions (n=30; 83.3%) were more common than unilocular lesions (n=6; 16.7%). There was no statistically significant difference between the average size of unilocular and multilocular OMs (p=0.2431). The borders of OMs were mainly well-defined (n=24; 66.7%) with different degrees of cortication. Only seven tumors caused tooth resorption (15.9%), while 24 (54.5%) caused tooth displacement. Cortical bone perforation was observed in 12 (38.7%) cases. Morphologically, OMs were characterized mainly by stellate or spindle-shaped cells in a myxoid background (n=53; 85.5%). Surgical resection was the most common treatment modality (n=15; 65.2%), followed by conservative surgery (n=8; 34.8%). Outcomes were available in 20 cases (32.3%). Seven of these patients had local recurrence (35%). Enucleation was the treatment with the highest recurrence rate (4/7; 57.1%). CONCLUSIONS: OM has a predilection for the posterior region of the jaws of female adults. Despite their bland morphological appearance, they displayed diverse imaging features. Clinicians must include the OM in the differential diagnosis of osteolytic lesions of the jaws. A long follow-up is needed to monitor possible recurrences.

Peripheral ameloblastoma is an uncommon, extraosseous counterpart of solid ameloblastoma, which occurs in the soft tissues overlying tooth-bearing areas or the alveolar mucosa of the mandible and maxilla. In this paper, the authors report a case of peripheral ameloblastoma located in the maxillary gingiva of a 54-year-old woman and review the literature regarding clinicopathological features, differential diagnosis and therapeutic management of peripheral ameloblastomas.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunoexpression of chemokine CXCL12 and its receptor CXCR4 in radicular cysts (RCs), dentigerous cysts (DCs), and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs), and to correlate the findings with morphologic parameters of RCs (inflammatory infiltrate and cystic epithelium). Twenty RCs, 20 DCs, and 20 OKCs were submitted to immunohistochemistry. The percentages of cytoplasmic (CXCL12 and CXCR4) and nuclear (CXCR4) staining in epithelial and fibrous capsule cells were determined. RCs and DCs exhibited higher epithelial expression of CXCL12 than OKCs ( P <0.05). The expression of CXCL12 in the fibrous capsule was higher in DCs than in RCs and OKCs ( P <0.05). Higher cytoplasmic expression of CXCR4 was observed in the epithelial lining and fibrous capsule of RCs and DCs compared with OKCs ( P <0.05). In the fibrous capsule, DCs exhibited higher nuclear expression of CXCR4 than OKCs ( P <0.05). No significant differences in the immunoexpression of CXCL12 or CXCR4 were observed according to the morphologic parameters of RCs ( P >0.05). Strong positive correlations were found between cytoplasmic and nuclear expression of CXCR4 in the epithelial lining of RCs and DCs and in the fibrous capsule of all groups ( P <0.05). The results suggest the participation of CXCL12 and CXCR4 in the pathogenesis of RCs, DCs, and OKCs. These proteins may be particularly relevant for the development of odontogenic cysts with less aggressive biological behavior, irrespective of their nature (inflammatory or developmental). In RCs, the expression of CXCL12 and CXCR4 may not be related to the intensity of the inflammatory infiltrate or the status of cystic epithelium.

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a soft tissue sarcoma that develops from skeletal striated muscle cells. RMSs are exceedingly rare in the oral cavity, particularly in the gingiva. Herein, we reported the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical features of a rare case of RMS in a 30-year-old female presenting clinically as a painful polypoid nodule on the mandibular gingiva. Microscopically, the tumor showed atypical spindle cells with elongated nuclei and eosinophilic cytoplasm arranged in a fascicular pattern. In focal areas, the tumor cells exhibited rhabdomyoblastic differentiation. Immunohistochemistry showed strong positivity for desmin, myogenin (scattered cells), and MyoD1. The patient underwent surgical resection followed by postoperative complementary radio- and chemotherapy. However, the patient had a local recurrence seven months after the initial treatment. She was submitted to a total mandibulectomy associated with adjuvant radiotherapy. However, she died two months after reoperation due to complications secondary to radiation therapy. Because of the rarity in the oral cavity and non-specific signs and symptoms, the clinical diagnosis of RMS is difficult and often overlooked. Therefore, careful histopathological and immunohistochemistry analysis of these tumors is essential to correct diagnosis. Early surgical excision with tumor-free margins and prolonged follow-up are strongly recommended.

Surgical ciliated cysts, also known as implantation cysts or postoperative maxillary cysts, are uncommon cystic formations predominantly arising in the posterior maxillary region after radical maxillary sinus surgery. Herein, we present the case of a 28-year-old male patient who had previously undergone orthognathic surgery and later experienced a minor car accident without major consequences. Approximately four years after surgery, the patient sought dental care due to the presence of a painless swelling in the maxillary region. Upon intraoral examination, the swelling extended from the area around the right canine to the upper left molar, covered by red mucosa. Image studies revealed an extensive well-defined osteolytic lesion causing thinning, erosion, buccal cortical plate perforation, and root resorption. An incisional biopsy was performed, and microscopic examination revealed a cystic lesion lined by ciliated respiratory-type epithelium and capsule variably fibrotic with sparse chronic inflammation. The final diagnosis was surgical ciliated cysts. The treatment approach involved decompression followed by enucleation and curettage, with the addition of bone grafting and the application of Leukocyte-Platelet Rich Fibrin (L-PRF). The patient has been under clinical follow-up for approximately 17 months with no signs of recurrence. A careful morphological evaluation is essential to avoid misdiagnosis and ensure a satisfactory treatment approach. In conclusion, this case highlights the importance of accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment approaches for surgical ciliated cysts to ensure favorable patient outcomes.

Few studies on the distribution of oral diseases in older people are available in the literature. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and demographic characteristics of oral and maxillofacial lesions in geriatric patients (age ≥ 60 years). A retrospective descriptive cross-sectional study was performed. Biopsy records were obtained from archives of three Brazilian oral pathology centers over a 20-year period. Data on sex, age, anatomical site, skin color, and histopathological diagnosis were collected and analyzed. Pearson's chi-square test was used to evaluate differences in the frequency of the different oral and maxillofacial lesion groups. A total of 7,476 biopsy records of older patients were analyzed. Most cases were diagnosed in patients aged 60 to 69 years (n = 4,487; 60.0%). Females were more affected (n = 4,403; 58.9%) with a female-to-male ratio of 1:0.7 (p < 0.001). The tongue (n = 1,196; 16.4%), lower lip (n = 1,005; 13.8%), and buccal mucosa (n = 997; 13.7%) were the most common anatomical sites. Reactive and inflammatory lesions (n = 3,840; 51.3%) were the most prevalent non-neoplastic pathologies (p < 0.001), followed by cysts (n = 475; 6.4%). Malignant neoplasms were more frequent (n = 1,353; 18.1%) than benign neoplasms (n = 512; 6.8%). Fibrous/fibroepithelial hyperplasia (n = 2,042; 53.2%) (p < 0.001) and squamous cell carcinoma (n = 1,191; 88.03%) (p < 0.001) were the most common oral lesions in older adults. Biopsy data allow the accurate characterization of the prevalence of oral and maxillofacial lesions, supporting the development of public health policies that can enable the prevention, early diagnosis, and appropriate treatment of these lesions. Also, they bring valuable information that helps dentists and geriatricians diagnose these diseases.

Dermoid cysts (DCs) and epidermoid cysts (ECs) are uncommon developmental cysts affecting the oral cavity. This study aims to evaluate patients with oral DCs and ECs and their demographic and clinicopathologic features. A retrospective descriptive cross-sectional study was performed. A total of 105,077 biopsy records of oral and maxillofacial lesions from seven Brazilian oral pathology centers were analyzed. All cases diagnosed as oral DCs and ECs were reviewed, and clinical, demographic, and histopathological data were collected. The series comprised 32 DCs (31.4%) and 70 ECs (68.6%). Most of the DCs occurred on the floor of the mouth (n = 14; 45.2%) of women (n = 17; 53.1%) with a mean age of 34.6 ± 21.6 years. All DCs were lined partially or entirely by stratified squamous epithelium (100%). Chronic inflammatory cells, melanin pigmentation, multinucleated giant cell reaction, and cholesterol clefts were observed in the fibrous capsule . Most of the ECs affected the labial mucosa (n = 20; 31.7%) of men (n = 39; 56.5%) with a mean age of 48.0±19.8 years. Microscopically, most ECs (n = 68; 97.1%) were lined entirely by stratified squamous epithelium. Two cysts (2.9%) showed areas of respiratory metaplasia. Chronic inflammatory cells, melanin pigmentation, multinucleated giant cell reaction, and cholesterol clefts were also observed in the fibrous capsule. Conservative surgical excision was the treatment of choice in all cases. Oral DCs and ECs are uncommon and often clinically misdiagnosed lesions. Clinicians should consider DCs and ECs in the differential diagnosis of soft tissue lesions in the oral cavity, mainly located on the floor of the mouth and labial mucosa.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral giant cell lesion (PGCL) is a reactive process associated with a local irritating factor that shows low recurrence after treatment, especially if the irritating factor is eliminated. On the other hand, central giant cell lesion (CGCL) presents a variable clinical behavior ranging from slow and asymptomatic growth without recurrence to rapid, painful and recurrent growth. Our aim was to compare the immunoexpression of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-ß) in CGCL and PGCL. METHODS: Twenty CGCL and 20 PGCL were selected for analysis of the immunoexpression of TNF-α and TGF-ß in multinucleated giant cells (MGC) and mononucleated cells (MC). RESULTS: The PGCL showed lightly higher expression of TNF-α than CGCL. In comparison with PGCL, the CGCL showed higher expression of TGF-ß in MC and MGC (P < 0.05) and in total cells (P < 0.05). Significant positive correlation was found between expressions of TGF-ß and TNF-α in CGCL (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that, in CGCL, coordinated interactions between TGF-ß and TNF-α may be important for osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption. PGCL occasionally cause bone resorption but to a lower extent, a fact that might be explained by the lower expression of TGF-ß in these lesions.

Rhabdomyosarcomas (RMS) are malignant tumors with skeletal muscle differentiation extremely rare in intraosseous sites. We reported a rare case of an aggressive intraosseous RMS found in the maxilla of a 17-year-old female patient with five months of evolution. Computed tomography revealed a large osteolytic lesion extending from tooth 21 to 27, causing buccal and lingual cortical plate perforation. Microscopically, the lesion showed a proliferation of spindle-shaped cells with elongated nuclei and eosinophilic cytoplasm, arranged in an interlaced fascicle pattern. The nuclei ranged from vesicular with distinct nucleoli to hyperchromatic. A focal component of plump to epithelioid cells with a moderate amount of eosinophilic cytoplasm was seen at the periphery of the tumor. The immunohistochemical analysis revealed positivity for desmin, MyoD1, and myogenin (scattered cells). S-100, SOX10, HMB45, ß-catenin, and CD34 were negative. Ki-67 was positive in 30% of tumor cells. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis showed the presence of a FUS-TFCP2 fusion. The diagnosis was intraosseous RMS with TFCP2 fusion. Surgical excision followed by chemo- and radiotherapy was carried out; however, the patient died of disease nine months after the treatment. Because of the rarity and non-specific signs and symptoms, the clinical diagnosis of intraosseous RMS is difficult and often overlooked. Therefore, careful histopathological evaluation, supported by immunohistochemical and molecular analysis, is essential to correct diagnosis. Early surgical excision with tumor-free margins and prolonged follow-up are strongly recommended.

Background: Differences in the pathogenesis and biological behavior of sporadic and Gorlin-Goltz syndrome-related odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) have been reported, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully elucidated. Chemokine CXCL12 and its main receptor CXCR4 regulate important events in the pathogenesis of several lesions. Material and Methods: This study evaluated the immunoexpression of CXCL12 and CXCR4 in sporadic and syndromic OKCs. Twenty-two sporadic OKCs and 22 syndromic OKCs were subjected to immunohistochemistry. The percentages of cytoplasmic (CXCL12 and CXCR4) and nuclear (CXCR4) staining in epithelial and fibrous capsule cells were determined. The results were analyzed statistically using the nonparametric Mann-Whitney test and Spearman correlation test (p<0.05). Results: Higher cytoplasmic expression of CXCL12 was observed in the epithelial lining and fibrous capsule of sporadic OKCs compared to syndromic OKCs (p<0.001). No statistically significant differences in the cytoplasmic expression of CXCR4 were observed between syndromic OKCs and sporadic OKCs (p>0.05). Compared to syndromic OKCs, sporadic OKCs exhibited higher nuclear expression of CXCR4 in the epithelial lining and lower immunoexpression in the fibrous capsule (p<0.05). In the epithelial lining of syndromic OKCs, positive correlation was observed between cytoplasmic and nuclear expressions of CXCR4 (p=0.003). In the fibrous capsule of syndromic OKCs and sporadic OKCs, cytoplasmic and nuclear expressions of CXCR4 were positively correlated (p<0.001). Conclusions: The results suggest a potential participation of CXCL12 and CXCR4 in the development of OKCs. The heterogeneous expression of these proteins in syndromic and sporadic OKCs may reflect differences in their pathogenesis and biological behavior. Oral mucocele (OM) is the most common lesion of minor salivary glands. The present study aimed to report the clinical and demographic features of a large series of OMs and identify possible predictive variables associated with the recurrence rate of these lesions. A retrospective descriptive cross-sectional study was performed. A total of 43,754 biopsy records from four pathology services in Brazil were analyzed. All cases of OMs were reviewed, and clinical and demographic data were collected. The study comprised 1,002 females (56.2%) and 782 males (43.8%), with a mean age of 19.8±16.4 years (range: 01-87 years) and a 1.3:1 female-to-male ratio. The lower lip (n=1,160; 67.4%), and floor of the mouth (n=172; 10.0%), were the most common affected sites, presenting clinically as nodules (n=978; 79.4%) of smooth surface (n=428; 77.5%) and normal color (n=768, 46.7%). Excisional biopsy was the treatment in most cases (n=1,392; 78.0%). Recurrent OMs represented 6.2% of all diagnosed cases (n=117). OMs recurred more commonly in younger patients (aged<20 years) (p<0.0001), in lesions larger than 2 cm in diameter (p<0.0001), and in those located in the ventral tongue (p=0.0351). Also, recurrence rates were higher significantly in cases treated with laser surgery than in those with conventional surgery (p=0.0005). Patients with OMs should be carefully informed of its possible recurrence, especially when found on the ventral tongue of young patients.

The aim of the study was to determine the distribution of histologically diagnosed nonodontogenic cysts (nOCs) over a 40-year period in a Brazilian population. Biopsy records from patients with nOC from the files of the Oral Pathology Service during the period of 1970-2009 were evaluated. Among 10,311 oral biopsies, 58 met the criteria of nOCs. The most frequent nOCs were nasopalatine duct cysts (32.8%), followed by epidermoid cysts (20.7%) and oral lymphoepithelial cysts (17.2%). Nasopalatine duct cysts showed predominance among females (68.4%). Epidermoid cysts were most commonly found in the floor of the mouth (36.4%), tongue (27.3%), and buccal mucosa (27.3%). Oral lymphoepithelial cysts exhibited female prevalence (80.0%) and were commonly located in the tongue (44.4%). The frequency of nOCs found in the population studied here is slightly different from those reported in other case series. Nasopalatine duct cysts, epidermoid cysts, and oral lymphoepithelial cysts were the most common nOCs found, accounting for 70.7% of all nOCs.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the antimicrobial activity, mechanical properties, and fluoride release capacity of glass ionomer cement (GIC) used for cementing orthodontic bands and modified by ethanolic extract of red propolis (EERP) in different concentrations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two orthodontic GICs containing EERP at 10%, 25%, and 50%, were used. The following assays were carried out: cell viability tests against Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans, diametral tensile strength, compressive strength, shear bond strength, microhardness, and fluoride release capacity. The statistical analyses of the antimicrobial tests, fluoride release, diametral tensile strength, compressive strength, and microhardness were performed using two-way analysis of variance and Tukey test (P < .05). Shear bond strength data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance followed by Tukey test (P < .05). RESULTS: At the concentrations of 25% and 50%, EERP was shown to be a promising antimicrobial agent incorporated into GICs against C albicans (P < .001) and S mutans (P < .001). The fluoride release capacity of the GICs was not affected, and the EERP concentration of 25% was the one that least affected the mechanical properties of the cements (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS: The GICs containing EERP at 25% showed a significant increase in their antimicrobial activity against S mutans and C albicans, while mechanical properties and fluoride release remained without significant changes.

Oral candidiasis is one of the most common fungal infections in humans. Its incidence has increased widely, as well as the antifungal resistance, demanding for the search for novel antifungal therapeutic agents. Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan is a plant species that has been proven to possess pharmacological effects, including antifungal and anti-inflammatory activities. This study evaluated in vitro the effects of standardized A. colubrina extract on virulence factors of Candida albicans and its regulation on immune response through C. albicans-host interaction. Antifungal activity was evaluated by Broth Microdilution Method against reference Candida strains (C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. tropicalis; C. dubliniensis). Anti-biofilm effect was performed on C. albicans mature biofilm and quantified by CFU/mL/g of biofilm dry weight. Proleotlytic enzymatic activities of proteinase and phospholipase were assessed by Azocasein and Phosphatidylcholine assays, respectively. Cytotoxicity effect was determined by Cell Titer Blue Viability Assay on Human Gingival Fibroblasts. Co-cultured model was used to analyze C. albicans coexisting with HGF by Scanning Electron Microscopy and fluorescence microscopies; gene expression was assessed by RT-PCR of C. albicans enzymes (SAP-1, PLB-1) and of host inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-8, IL-1ß, IL-10). Cytokines secretion was analysed by Luminex. The extract presented antifungal effect with MIC<15.62 µg/ml against Candida strains. Biofilm and proteolytic activity were significant reduced at 312.4 µg/ml (20 × 15.62 µg/ml) extract concentration. Cell viability was maintained higher than 70% in concentrations up to 250 µg/ml (LD50 = 423.3 µg/ml). Co-culture microscopies demonstrated a substantial decreased in C. albicans growth and minimal toxicity against host cells. Gene expressions of SAP-1/PLB-1 were significantly down-regulated and host immune response was modulated by a significant decreased on IL-6 and IL-8 cytokines secretion. A. colubrina had antifungal activity on Candida strains, antibiofilm, and anti-proteolytic enzyme effects against C. albicans. Presented low cytotoxicity to the host cells and modulatory effects on the host immune response.

The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of chronic inflammatory periapical diseases in different regions of Brazil and to compare with data from the literature. A multicenter study was carried out in four Brazilian referral centers in oral diagnosis. Histopathological records were reviewed, and all cases diagnosed microscopically as periapical granuloma, radicular cyst, and periapical abscess were included. Demographic and clinical data were collected. Descriptive statistics and Pearson's chi-square test were performed. A total of 10,381 cases of chronic inflammatory periapical diseases were found (13.8% of 74,931 archived specimens) over a period of 65 years. Radicular cysts were the most common lesion (59.9%). Women (56.1%) with a mean age of 37.01 years old (range 13 to 100 ± 14.42) and people of white skin color (59.2%) were the most affected individuals by chronic inflammatory periapical diseases. The lesions were generally asymptomatic (28.1%), located in the maxilla (60.1%), and posterior region (49.8%). The radicular cysts were larger when compared to periapical granulomas (p < 0.001). The disagreement between the clinical and histopathological diagnoses was higher when the final diagnosis was a periapical granuloma (p < 0.001). Chronic inflammatory periapical diseases continue to be common lesions affecting mainly adults. This should be a consequence of the burden of untreated caries in permanent teeth. Women are more affected and radicular cyst was the most common lesion.

This study evaluated the expression of fibronectin, tenascin and type I collagen in ameloblastomas and adenomatoid odontogenic tumors (AOTs) aiming to contribute with the comprehension of the differences in the biological behavior of these tumors. Immunohistochemical technique was performed in 20 cases of ameloblastoma (16 solid and 4 desmoplastic) and in 10 cases of AOT. All tumors presented moderate fibronectin expression in the stroma. Solid ameloblastomas showed intense expression of fibronectin at the epithelial-mesenchymal interface, whereas desmoplastic ameloblastomas revealed no immunoexpression of fibronectin at this site. Ameloblastomas presented stronger immunoreactivity to tenascin than AOTs, especially at the epithelial-mesenchymal interface. AOTs and desmoplastic ameloblastomas showed intense labeling for type I collagen. The patterns of expression of the proteins studied agree with the locally more invasive behavior of ameloblastomas in comparison to AOTs. Our results might suggest a less invasive behavior of desmoplastic ameloblastoma in comparison to solid ameloblastoma.
