RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Anterior repositioning splint (ARS) is used to treat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc displacement with reduction (DDwR). However, high recurrence rate remains a problem especially in patients with unstable occlusions. OBJECTIVE: This study optimised standard ARS therapy and proposed a step-back ARS retraction (SAR) method in adult patients with DDwR. METHODS: Dental examinations and magnetic resonance imaging of TMJ were obtained before treatment (T0), 1 to 3 months (T1), 3 to 6 months (T2) and 6 to 12 months (T3) during treatment in 48 adults (average age 27.1 ± 5.7 years). After 3 months of basic ARS wearing, personalised treatment for patients with normal disc-condyle relationship was prescribed depending on bilaminar zone adaptations and severity of molar openbite. SAR which required sequential ARS wearing was designed for patients with deep overbite/overjet until retrodiscal tissue adaptations and stable occlusions were achieved. RESULTS: The maximum interincisal opening was increased from 44.3 ± 6.9 to 45.3 ± 6.3 mm (p < .01), and joint pain was alleviated after ARS treatment. The overall success rate of ARS wearing was 92.1% (58/63) featured by a recaptured disc. Fifteen patients who underwent SAR therapy all showed bilaminar zone adaptations in the end, and one patient had positive condylar bone remodelling. CONCLUSIONS: ARS treatment could improve mouth opening and joint symptoms in adult DDwR patients. SAR method was suitable for treating DDwR patients with deep overbite and overjet and improved retrodiscal tissue adaptations and condylar bone remodelling.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether short-term daily consumption of yoghurt leads to colonization by Lactobacillus acidophilus in a group of human subjects who were initially totally devoid of L. acidophilus in their oral cavities. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-three volunteers consumed yogurt containing L. acidophilus during a 14-day trial stage. Oral and fecal samples were collected at the clearance stage and at the post-yoghurt intake stage until L. acidophilus was found. Standard polymerase chain reaction methods using specific primers were adopted for the detection and identification of L. acidophilus. RESULTS: The isolation frequency decreased rapidly 72 h after stopping intake of yoghurt. After 1 week, L. acidophilus was absent in all oral samples. Non-significant differences were found between the survival rates of L. acidophilus in samples of saliva, plaque, tongue surface, and buccal mucosa. L. acidophilus was also found to remain in the gastrointestinal tract for longer than in the oral cavity. CONCLUSION: Allochthonous L. acidophilus is not likely to permanently colonize the oral cavity and intestine.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the competition between probiotics in bio-yogurt and periodontal pathogens in vitro. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The antimicrobial activity of bio-yogurt was studied by agar diffusion assays, using eight species of putative periodontal pathogens and a 'protective bacteria' as indicator strains. Four probiotic bacterial species (Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Bifidobacterium) were isolated from yogurt and used to rate the competitive exclusion between probiotics and periodontal pathogens. RESULTS: Fresh yogurt inhibited all the periodontal pathogens included in this work, showing inhibition zones ranging from 9.3 (standard deviation 0.6) mm to 17.3 (standard deviation 1.7) mm, whereas heat-treated yogurt showed lower antimicrobial activity. In addition, neither fresh yogurt nor heat-treated yogurt inhibited the 'protective bacteria', Streptococcus sanguinis. The competition between yogurt probiotics and periodontal pathogens depended on the sequence of inoculation. When probiotics were inoculated first, Bifidobacterium inhibited Porphyromonas gingivalis, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas circumdentaria, and Prevotella nigrescens; L. acidophilus inhibited P. gingivalis, A. actinomycetemcomitans, P. circumdentaria, P. nigrescens, and Peptostreptococcus anaerobius; L. bulgaricus inhibited P. gingivalis, A. actinomycetemcomitans, and P. nigrescens; and S. thermophilus inhibited P. gingivalis, F. nucleatum, and P. nigrescens. However, their antimicrobial properties were reduced when both species (probiotics and periodontal pathogens) were inoculated simultaneously. When periodontal pathogens were inoculated first, Prevotella intermedia inhibited Bifidobacterium and S. thermophilus. CONCLUSIONS: The results demonstrated that bio-yogurt and the probiotics that it contains are capable of inhibiting specific periodontal pathogens but have no effect on the periodontal protective bacteria.

RESUMO

A method based on cloud point extraction was developed to determine phthalate esters including di-ethyl-phthalate (DEP), di-(2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate (DEHP) and di-cyclohexyl-phthalate (DCP) in environmental water samples using high-performance liquid chromatography separation and ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV). The non-ionic surfactant Triton X-114 was chosen as extraction solvent. The parameters affecting extraction efficiency, such as concentrations of Triton X-114 and Na2SO4, equilibration temperature, equilibration time and centrifugation time were evaluated and optimized. Under the optimum conditions, the method can achieve preconcentration factors of 35, 88, 111 and detection of limits of 2.0, 3.8, 1.0 ng/ml for DEP, DEHP and DCP in 10-ml water sample, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of trace amount of phathalate esters in effluent water of the wastewater treatment plant and the lixivium of plastic fragments.

RESUMO

MBE growth of ZnS(x)Se(1 - x) thin films on ITO coated glass substrates were carried out using ZnS and Se sources with the substrate temperature ranging from 270 degrees C to 330 degrees C . The XRD theta/2theta spectra resulted from these films indicated that the as-grown polycrystalline ZnS(x)Se(1 - x) thin films had a preferred orientation along the (111) planes. The evaluated crystal sizes as deduced from the FWHM of the XRD layer peaks showed strong growth temperature dependence, with the optimized temperature being about 290 degrees C. Both AFM and TEM measurements of these thin films also indicated a similar growth temperature dependence. High quality ZnS(x)Se(1 - x) thin film grown at the optimized temperature had the smoothest surface with lowest RMS value of 1.2 nm and TEM cross-sectional micrograph showing a well defined columnar structure.

RESUMO

Micro-particle transport and switch governed by guided-wave optical interference are presented. The optical interference, occurring in a directional coupler and a multi-mode interferometer made by inverted rib waveguides, results in a specific evanescent field dependent on wavelength. Through a detailed theoretical analysis, the field of induced optical force shows a correlative pattern associated with the evanescent field. Experimental results demonstrate that 10 µm polystyrene beads are propelled with a trajectory subject to the interference pattern accordingly. By launching different wavelengths, the polystyrene beads can be delivered to different output waveguide ports. Massive micro-particle manipulation is applicable.
