RESUMO

A new Chinese ant species Carebaralaevicepssp. nov. is described based on the major and minor workers. This species is most similar to C.lusciosa (Wheeler, 1928) due to a spineless propodeum, the absence of horns, and a smooth head capsule. It is distinguished by the following features: (1) antenna 10-segmented; (2) katepisternum rugose-reticulate; (3) in major workers, lateral sides of head in full-face view parallel; (4) metanotal groove distinct, anterodorsal corner forming an acute tooth behind metanotal groove. Moreover, an updated key to Chinese Carebara species is presented based on major workers, with a checklist comprising a total of 36 Chinese Carebara species and subspecies. Morphological structures and scanning electron micrographs of the newly discovered species' minor and major workers are provided.

RESUMO

Underwater facilities are often perplexed by severe and ubiquitous biofouling. The widely applied commercial antifouling materials still have several challenges in static applications. Herein, a polymer containing isoborneol and borane (PBABs), the borneol derivative structure and grafted pyridine-triphenylborane (PTPB) as antifouling groups were prepared by radical polymerization. PBABs showed high antibacterial rates for Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) of up to 95.1% and 81.1%, respectively, confirming superior antibacterial adhesion propertys. More importantly, PBABs effectively reduced the expression of mussel adhesion protein, indicating superior antifouling propertys, resulting from the synergistic effect of multiple antifouling functional groups on the material's surface. Therefore, the PBABs have been evaluated as noncytotoxic, low-cost, easily synthesized, and mass-produced, which demonstrates their great potential for actual marine applications.

RESUMO

Substituting natural products for traditional poison-killing antifouling agents is an efficient and promising method to alleviate the increasingly serious ecological crisis and aggravate the loss due to marine biofouling. Herein, the successful synthesis of poly(methyl methacrylate-co-ethyl acrylate-co-hexafluorobutyl methacrylate-co-isobornyl methacrylate) copolymer (PBAF) with borneol monomers and fluorine by a free radical polymerization method is reported. The PBA0.09F coating exhibits outstanding antibacterial and antifouling activity, achieving 98.2% and 92.3% resistance to Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively, and the number of Halamphora sp. adhesion is only 26 (0.1645 mm2) in 24 h. This remarkable antibacterial and antifouling performance is attributed to the incorporation of fluorine components into the copolymer, which induces a low surface energy and hydrophobicity and the complex molecular structure of the natural nontoxic antifouling agent borneol. In addition, the results showed that the contents of the adhesion-related proteins mfp-3, mfp-5, and mfp-6 were significantly reduced, which proved that natural substances affect the secretion of biological proteins. Importantly, the PBAF coating exhibits excellent environmental friendliness and long-term stability. The antifouling mechanism is clarified, and an effective guide for an environmentally friendly antifouling coating design is proposed.

RESUMO

A flaxseed oil carboxymethyl chitosan-decorated proliposome system was fabricated in this research. The physicochemical characteristics, stability, and in vitro release behaviors of flaxseed oil were studied and compared with that of flaxseed oil-loaded liposomes. The results of dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and oxidation stability indicated that the storage stability of proliposomes was better. After 28 days of storage, the peroxide value of flaxseed oil-loaded liposomes (20.1 meq/kg) was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than that of flaxseed oil-loaded proliposomes (9.0 meq/kg); the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances in the former (0.53 mmol/kg) was also higher than that in the latter (0.27 mmol/kg). The in vitro release behavior of flaxseed oil indicated the proliposomes were more stable in the simulated gastrointestinal fluids. Therefore, the flaxseed oil-loaded proliposome system could be a promising vehicle for delivery flaxseed oil in food industry. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: A flaxseed oil-loaded proliposome delivery system was fabricated in this research. Their physical and oxidation stability of flaxseed oil were improved, and the in vitro cumulative release of flaxseed oil was delayed compared with flaxseed oil liposomes. This system may provide an effective strategy for the flaxseed oil encapsulation in the food industry.

RESUMO

Stem cell therapy holds great promise for cardiac regeneration. However, the lack of ability to control stem cell fate after in vivo transplantation greatly restricts its therapeutic outcomes. MicroRNA delivery has emerged as a powerful tool to control stem cell fate for enhanced cardiac regeneration. However, the clinical translation of therapy based on gene-transfected stem cells remains challenging, due to the unknown in vivo behaviors of stem cells. Here, we developed a nano-platform (i.e., PFBT@miR-1-Tat NPs) that can achieve triggered release of microRNA-1 to promote cardiac differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and long-term tracking of transplanted MSCs through bright and ultra-stable fluorescence of conjugated polymer poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-alt-benzothiadiazole) (PFBT). We found that PFBT@miR-1-Tat NP-treated MSCs significantly restored the infarcted myocardium by promoting stem cell cardiac differentiation and integration with the in situ cardiac tissues. Meanwhile, MSCs without gene delivery improved the infarcted heart functions mainly through a paracrine effect and blood vessel formation. The developed conjugated polymer nanovector should be a powerful tool for manipulating as well as revealing the fate of therapeutic cells in vivo, which is critical for optimizing the therapeutic route of gene and cell combined therapy and therefore for accelerating clinical translation. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The lack of controllability in stem cell fate and the unclear in vivo cellular behaviors restrict the therapeutic outcomes of stem cell therapy. Herein, we engineered fluorescent conjugated polymer nanoparticles as gene delivery nanovectors with controlled release and high intracellular delivery capability to harness the fate of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in vivo, meanwhile to reveal the cellular mechanism of gene-treated stem cell therapy. As compared with only MSC treatment that improves infarcted myocardium functions through paracrine effect, treatment with conjugated polymer nanovector-treated MSCs significantly restored infarcted myocardium through enhancing MSC cardiac differentiation and integration with the in-situ cardiac tissues. These findings demonstrate that the conjugated polymer nanovector would be a powerful tool in optimizing gene and cell combined therapy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Knowledge of the mechanical behaviour of root dentine can facilitate better understanding of spontaneous vertical root fracture (VRF), an age-related disease initiated mainly at the root apex. We tested the hypothesis that the biomechanical properties of root dentine change with ageing. METHODS: Sixteen human premolars were divided into "old" (17-30 years) and "young" (50-80 years) groups. The elastic modulus, nano-hardness, micro-hardness, elemental contents, tubular density/area of root dentine in cervical, middle and apical root regions were evaluated using atomic force microscopy-based nano-indentation, Knoop indentation, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, respectively. RESULTS: The apical dentine showed a lower nano-hardness, a lower elastic modulus, a lower calcium content, a lower calcium-to-phosphorus ratio and a smaller tubular density/area than the cervical dentine in both age groups, whereas spatial differences in micro-hardness were observed only in old roots. Compared with young dentine, old dentine showed a greater hardness, a higher elastic modulus, a greater mineral content and a smaller tubular size in the cervical portion, whereas the age-induced changes in tubular density were insignificant. Finite element analysis revealed that due to its higher elastic modulus, old apical dentine has a higher stress level than young dentine. CONCLUSIONS: The intrinsic material properties of root dentine have spatial variations, and they are altered by ageing. The higher stress level in old apical dentine may be one reason, if not the most important one, why spontaneous VRFs are more likely to occur in the elderly population.

RESUMO

A better understanding of the fracture toughness (KIC) of human enamel and the changes induced by aging is important for the clinical treatment of teeth cracks and fractures. We conducted microindentation tests and chemical content measurements on molar teeth from "young" (18 ≤ age ≤ 25) and "old" (55 ≤ age) patients. The KIC and the mineral contents (calcium and phosphorus) in the outer, the middle, and the inner enamel layers within the cuspal and the intercuspal regions of the crown were measured through the Vickers toughness test and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS), respectively. The elastic modulus used for the KIC calculation was measured through atomic force microscope (AFM)-based nanoindentation tests. In the outer enamel layer, two direction-specific values of the KIC were calculated separately (direction I, crack running parallel to the occlusal surface; direction II, perpendicular to direction I). The mean KIC of the outer enamel layer was lower than that of the internal layers (p<0.05). No other region-related differences in the mechanical properties were found in both groups. In the outer enamel layer, old enamel has a lower KIC, II and higher mineral contents than young enamel (p<0.05). The enamel surface becomes more prone to cracks with aging partly due to the reduction in the interprismatic organic matrix observed with the maturation of enamel.
