RESUMO

Microplastics are easily consumed by marine animals, thereby entering the food chain and endangering animal health. However, there are few studies focusing on the effects of microplastics in mangrove sediments on microbial communities. In order to study the influence of microplastics on microorganisms, microplastics and microorganisms were extracted from Zhanjiang (Guangdong Province, China) mangrove sediments and analyzed. The results showed that there were differences in Shannon and Simpson indices of the microbial community in microplastics (p < 0.05), and there were also differences between JG30_KF_CM45 and Natranaerovirga at the genus level, indicating that microplastics may affect the diversity and composition of microorganisms in sediments. In addition, FAPROTAX function prediction analysis showed that microplastics may affect the nitrification of microbial communities. The results from this study indicate that microplastics affected the diversity and richness of microorganisms in mangrove sediments, which provides an experimental basis for the relationship between microplastics and microorganisms.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of a new powered toothbrush with tapered bristles on the brush head for the reduction of dental plaque and gingivitis. METHODS: This was a single-centre, single-group, longitudinal clinical trial. Thirty-two participants who were typical manual toothbrush users were recruited and assigned the sonic-powered brush. Interviews were arranged on the 1st , 4th , and 15th days which represented the baseline (T1 ), middle (T2 ) and final (T3 ) time points, respectively. At each visit, the plaque index (PlI), gingival index (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP) and probing depth (PD) were recorded for the Ramfjord index teeth, gingival crevicular fluid(GCF) samples were collected and the proportions of eight periodontal pathogenic bacteria were analysed. Repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for comparisons at different time points. RESULTS: PlI was significantly reduced by 41.67% from T1 to T2 (p<0.001) and decreased by 18.57% from T2 to T3 (p=0.003). GI also varied significantly from T1 to T2 (p=0.018) and T1 to T3 (p=0.037). A 35.86% reduction in the BOP percentage occurred after using the sonic-powered toothbrush for 3 days (p=0.001). However, no significant difference was observed in the mean values of PD at different examination intervals (p=0.529). There was no significant difference in the proportions of bacteria between T1 and T3 (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: This research demonstrated the efficacy of the sonic-powered brush handle together with tapered bristles on the brush in reducing plaque and gingivitis within a short time period.

RESUMO

Budesonide is a glucocorticoid for the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC). The current study aims to develop a thermosensitive in situ and adhesive gel for rectal delivery of budesonide. HPMC K4M was selected as the adhesive agent based on the adhesive force and the effect on gel performance. The formulation of gel was optimized by using the central composite design-response surface methodology (CCD-RSM); a mathematical model was successfully developed to predict desired formulations as well as to analyze relationships between the amount of Pluronic F-127, Pluronic F-68, and HPMC K4M and the performances of gel. Based on CCD-RSM, a thermosensitive in situ and adhesive gel consisting of 0.002% budesonide, 0.74% HPMC, 4.87% F-68, and 19.0% F-127 was developed. Furthermore, the in vivo behavior of gel was evaluated in Sprague-Dawley rats. In comparison with budesonide solution, rectal administration of budesonide gel at 0.1 mg/kg in rats showed relative bioavailability of 230% with significant increase in rectum uptake.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify symptom clusters in lung cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and the central and bridge symptoms within each symptom cluster. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 1,255 patients with lung cancer were recruited through convenience sampling at Nanfang Hospital. Patient symptom burden was assessed using the M.D. Anderson Symptom Inventory (MDASI) and the Lung Cancer module of the MDASI (MDASI-LC). Symptom clusters were identified using the Walktrap algorithm, and central and bridge symptoms in the symptom clusters were identified by network analysis. RESULTS: The patients included 818 (65.18%) males and 437 (34.82%) females with a mean age of 56.56 ± 11.78 years. Four symptom clusters were identified: fatigue, gastrointestinal, psychoneurological and respiratory. Their central symptoms were fatigue, vomiting, distress and hemoptysis, respectively, and their bridge symptoms were pain, vomiting, dry mouth and shortness of breath. CONCLUSIONS: Lung cancer symptoms show certain strong correlations with each other, resulting in symptom clusters. Central symptoms may influence other symptoms within a symptom cluster, and bridge symptoms might impact the density of the symptom network. This study identified central and bridge symptoms in lung cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Targeting these symptoms with interventions for symptom clusters could make symptom management more precise and effective. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: In clinical settings, the burden of symptom clusters may be reduced by intervening against the central symptoms of these symptom clusters. Alternatively, if the objective is to diminish the connections between different symptom clusters and holistically alleviate the overall burden, interventions focused on bridge symptoms may be employed.

RESUMO

The development of the shipping industry has led to a large volume of ballast water discharge annually. This accelerates pollutants' transfer and dispersion, such as microplastics. Currently, empirical data on microplastics in ballast water are rarely available. This study innovatively investigated the abundance, morphological characteristics (particle size, shape, and color), and polymer composition of microplastics in ballast water from ports surrounding the Liaodong Peninsula. The results revealed that the average abundance of microplastics in 13 ships' ballast water was 6071.30 ± 1313.85 items/m3. Notably, the small microplastics (0.06-2.50 mm) were most abundant, accounting for 94.52 % of the total microplastics. Transparent, fiber, and polyethylene glycol terephthalate were the most prevalent color, shape, and polymer composition of microplastics detected in the ballast water. The risk assessment indicated that these microplastics present ecological risks to organisms. These findings suggest that ship ballast water is the potential "hotspot" for marine microplastics transport.

RESUMO

Oil and gas activities are sources of marine microplastics (MPs) but have received less attention globally. This study assessed the distribution characteristics and ecological risks of MPs in 31 sediment samples and effluent samples of 5 oil and gas platforms related to offshore oil and gas activities in the Bohai Sea. The results showed that the mean abundance of MPs in sediment, produced water, and domestic sewage was 205.7 ± 151.5 items/kg d.w., 18 ± 11 items/L, and 26 ± 39 items/L, respectively. The MPs in sediments and effluents were dominated by transparent, rayon, and fibers <1 mm. Oil and gas activities may influence the abundance of MPs in the sediments. The sediments in the area were at a low level of risk, but some samples exhibited indexes beyond low levels. The mass of MPs carried by the effluents from oil and gas platforms in the Bohai Sea was less than that of other sources.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: Sugar alcohols (also called polyols) are regarded as a "healthy" sugar substitute. One of the possible reasons for their safe use in pregnant women is their natural origin and the presence of polyols in maternal and fetal samples during normal human gestation. But little is known about the association between circulating sugar alcohols levels and maternal metabolic disorders during pregnancy. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to detect the concentration of the polyols in participants with and without gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and to investigate the association between maternal serum levels of polyols and GDM, as well as newborn outcomes. METHODS: A nested population-based case-control study was conducted in 109 women with and without GDM. Maternal concentrations of serum erythritol, sorbitol, and xylitol in the fasting state were quantified using a time of flight mass spectrometry system. RESULT: In women with GDM, serum concentrations of erythritol and sorbitol were higher, but serum concentrations of xylitol were lower than those in women without GDM. Per 1-SD increment of Box-Cox-transformed concentrations of erythritol and sorbitol were associated with the increased odds of GDM by 43% and 155% (95% CI 1.07-1.92 and 95% CI 1.77-3.69), while decreased odds were found for xylitol by 25% (95% CI 0.57-1.00). Additionally, per 1-SD increase of Box-Cox-transformed concentrations of serum sorbitol was associated with a 52% increased odds of large for gestational age newborns controlling for possible confounders (95% CI 1.00-2.30). CONCLUSION: Maternal circulating sugar alcohols levels during pregnancy were significantly associated with GDM. These findings provide the potential roles of polyols on maternal metabolic health during pregnancy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is an important public health problem. A monovalent EV-A71 vaccine was launched in China in 2016. Previous studies showed that inactivated monovalent EV-A71 vaccines were highly efficient against HFMD associated with EV-A71 but not against HFMD with other etiologies, leading to a hypothesis that the introduction of EV-A71 vaccines might change the pathogen spectrum and epidemiological trend of HFMD. In this study, we described for the first time the changing epidemiological characteristics of HFMD after the launch of the EV-A71 vaccine. METHODS: We extracted individual-based epidemiological data on HFMD cases reported to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention between January 2013 and December 2019. We described the changing epidemiological characteristics of HFMD before and after vaccine launch according to the distribution of diseases characteristics (demographic, temporal, and geographical) and evaluated the potential changes in risk factors of severe patients. All analyses were stratified by the phase before and after vaccine launch, and by enterovirus serotype. FINDINGS: During 2013-2019, 15,316,710 probable cases of HFMD were reported. Of these, 787,197 (5·1%) were laboratory confirmed and 76,982 (0·5%) were severe. After the launch of the EV-A71 vaccine, the median age of HFMD patients infected with EV-A71 increased from 2·24 years (IQR:1·43, 3·56) to 2·81 years (IQR:1·58, 4·01). The proportion of patients less than 3 years of age decreased while the proportion of patients 3-5 years of age increased. There was a large decrease (60·7%) in the proportion of severe cases as well as a decline (28·3%) in HFMD patients infected with EV-A71. After the launch of the EV-A71 vaccine, the severe illness rate and mortality rate of HFMD patients in all age groups has decreased sharply, 62·20% and 83·78% respectively. The timing of the HFMD epidemic peak was delayed (1-2 months) . After the launch of EV-A71 vaccine, the risk of becoming a severe case for EV-A71 serotype was decreased, whereas that risk was instead increased for CV-A16 (from 0·17 (95% CI:0·16, 0·18) to 0·23 (95% CI:0·21, 0·25)) and other enterovirus compared to EV-A71 (from 0·38 (95% CI:0·37, 0·39) to 0·58 (95% CI:0·56, 0·61)). The longer the time from onset to diagnosis, the higher was the risk of being a severe case, but the effect size was decreased. INTERPRETATION: The introduction of the EV-A71 vaccine has effectively reduced the proportion of severe HFMD cases and mortality, but changes to the dominant serotypes should be closely monitored. Development of multivalent vaccines to avoid an increased case burden due to other enteroviruses is greatly needed. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In early 2020, non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) were implemented in China to reduce and contain the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) transmission. These NPIs might have also reduced the incidence of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). METHODS: The weekly numbers of HFMD cases and meteorological factors in 31 provincial capital cities and municipalities in mainland China were obtained from Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CCDC) and National Meteorological Information Center of China from 2016 to 2020. The NPI data were collected from local CDCs. The incidence rate ratios (IRRs) were calculated for the entire year of 2020, and for January-July 2020 and August-December 2020. The expected case numbers were estimated using seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average models. The relationships between kindergarten closures and incidence of HFMD were quantified using a generalized additive model. The estimated associations from all cities were pooled using a multivariate meta-regression model. FINDINGS: Stringent NPIs were widely implemented for COVID-19 control from January to July 2020, and the IRRs for HFMD were less than 1 in all 31 cities, and less than 0·1 for 23 cities. Overall, the proportion of HFMD cases reduced by 52·9% (95% CI: 49·3-55·5%) after the implementation of kindergarten closures in 2020, and this effect was generally consistent across subgroups. INTERPRETATION: The decrease in HFMD incidence was strongly associated with the NPIs for COVID-19. HFMD epidemic peaks were either absent or delayed, and the final epidemic size was reduced. Kindergarten closure is an intervention to prevent HFMD outbreaks. RESUMO

An analytical methodology for the analysis of methamidophos in water and soil samples incorporating a molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction process using methamidophos-imprinted polymer was developed. Binding study demonstrated that the polymer exhibited excellent affinity and high selectivity to the methamidophos. Evidence was also found by FT-IR analysis that hydrogen bonding between the CO(2)H in the polymer cavities and the NH(2) and P=O of the template was the origin of methamidophos recognition. The use of molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction improved the accuracy and precision of the GC method and lowered the limit of detection. The recovery of methamidophos extracted from a 10.0 g soil sample at the 100 ng/g spike level was 95.4%. The limit of detection was 3.8 ng/g. The recovery of methamidophos extracted from 100 mL tap and river water at 1 ng/mL spike level was 96.1% and 95.8%, and the limits of detection were 10 and 13 ng/L respectively. These molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction procedures enabled selective extraction of polar methamidophos successfully from water and soil samples, demonstrating the potential of molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction for rapid, selective, and cost-effective sample pretreatment.

RESUMO

The poly (γ-glutamic acid)/tricalcium phosphate (γ-PGA/TCP) composite was fabricated as a novel biomineralization material function in preventing caries. Demineralized bovine dentin specimens were prepared and randomly divided into 5 groups (i. α-TCP, ⅱ. γ-PGA, ⅲ. γ-PGA/TCP, ⅳ. CPP-ACP, and ⅴ. deionized water) and subjected to 14 days of pH cycling. Remineralization ability was evaluated by lesion depth, mineral loss and microhardness. The morphology of dentin depositions was observed with scanning electron microscope (SEM), the crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the wettability was tested by contact angle measurements. ANOVA revealed specimens treated by γ-PGA/TCP presented the statistically least lesion depth (p<0.01) and mineral loss (p<0.001), and the highest hardness (p<0.001). SEM revealed prominent intra- and inter-tubular precipitates in both γ-PGA and γ-PGA/TCP groups. The XRD patterns of the deposition structures in all groups were similar to those of sound dentin, and the contact angle of water decreased after γ-PGA/TCP treatment.

RESUMO

Lung cancer, as one of the most fatal cancers around the world, is responsible for the death of millions every year. Among various types of lung cancers, the ones overexpressing CD44 is usually associated higher cell proliferation with poorer prognosis. Therefore, finding a way to effectively treat CD44 positive lung cancer is urgently needed. Here in this study, negatively charged ultrasmall prussian blue nanoparticles (UPBNPs) was firstly synthesized and adsorbed to polyethyleneimine (PEI) together with glucose oxidase (Gox). Afterwards, the PEI was further complexed with hyaluronic acid (HA) to give a cascade reaction platform (HP/UPB-Gox) for CD44 positive lung cancer therapy. The HP/UPB-Gox with HA shell was able to positively target CD44 overexpressed A549 cells. Upon arriving at the tumor tissue, the Gox catalyzed the glucose of tumor to create H2O2, which further served as the substrate of UPBNPs, a peroxidase mimic, to finally give highly toxic hydroxyl radical (OH) for cancer therapy. Therefore, the cascade reaction formed between UPBNPs and Gox was expected to realize effective treatment on CD44 overexpressed lung cancer.

RESUMO

A new methamidophos-specific molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was synthesized based on non-covalent interaction. The complexes formed between MAP and MAA were evaluated by 1H NMR, FTIR and UV spectrometry. The MAP-MAA complexes of 1 : 2 mole ratio were obtained by cooperative hydrogen bonding and the complexes possessed better stabilization (K = 2.894 x 10(6) L2 x mol(-2). The Infrared spectrometry differences of the MIPs before and after saturated with MAP further indicated that there were carboxyl functional groups in the MIP, which could interact with the template by cooperative hydrogen bonding specifically.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical and epidemiologic characteristics and the serum types of enterovirus of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in children. METHODS: The RT-nPCR method was established with universal primers within 5' untranslated region of enterovirus and VP1 region of Coxsackievirus A16 (CAV16) and enterovirus 71 (EV 71). Enteroviruses were detected with RT-nPCR in 237 children with HFMD. Clinical and epidemiologic characteristics and serum types of enterovirus of the patients with HFMD were studied. RESULTS: The patients'age ranged from 7 months to 11 years (mean 4.2 +/- 0.5 years). The majority (94.5%) were less than 6 years old. HFMD was mostly seen in spring and winter (67.9%). Oral mucosal pox or ulcer as well as hand and foot rashes were observed in all 237 patients. Fever occurred in 141 patients (59.5%). Of the 237 patients, 133 (56.1%) were RT-nPCR positive. Of the 133 cases, 38 were positive for EV71, 64 were positive for CAV16, and 31 were negative for both EV71 and CAV16. The patients infected by different types of enteroviruses had similar clinical characteristics. Gene colon and sequence analysis for 12 strains of enteroviruses PCR positive products presented as EV71 (n=5), CAV16 (n=5), ECHO13 (n=1), and CAV5 (n=1). CONCLUSIONS: HFMD tends to occur in younger children less than 6 years old. The majority are affected in spring and winter. EV71 and CAV16 are common pathogens of HFMD. There is no relationship between clinical characteristics and serum types of enteroviruses in HFMD patients.

RESUMO

In the present study, molecular imprinting technique was used to develop a method based on noncovalent interaction for the systhesis of a cotinine-specific polymer. The molecular recognition characteristics of the template polymer were evaluated by UV, IR, XPS and 1H NMR. The results indicated that the interactions should be cooperative hydrogen bonds produced by self-assembling of the template and the monomer. The stoichiometric mole ratio of COT-MAA complex is 1 : 2. Furthermore, nitrogen atom of the pyridine ring and oxygen atom of the lactam group in cotinine molecular are hydrogen-bond acceptors, being the predominant binding sites interacting with the functional monomer.

RESUMO

Ultraflexible transparent film heaters have been fabricated by embedding conductive silver (Ag) nanowires into a thin poly(vinyl alcohol) film (AgNW/PVA). A cold-pressing method was used to rationally adjust the sheet resistance of the composite films and thus the heating powers of the AgNW/PVA film heaters at certain biases. The film heaters have a favorable optical transmittance (93.1% at 26 Ω/sq) and an outstanding mechanical flexibility (no visible change in sheet resistance after 10 000 bending cycles and at a radius of curvature ≤1 mm). The film heaters have an environmental endurance, and there is no significant performance degradation after being kept at high temperature (80 °C) and high humidity (45 °C, 80% humidity) for half a year. The efficient Joule heating can increase the temperature of the film heaters (20 Ω/sq) to 74 °C in ∼20 s at a bias of 5 V. The fast-heating characteristics at low voltages (a few volts) associated with its transparent and flexibility properties make the poly(dimethylsiloxane)/AgNW/PVA composite film a potential candidate in medical thermotherapy pads.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the short-term and long-term effects of pharyngeal airway in skeletal Class Ⅲ malocclusion patients who underwent bimaxillary surgery or isolated mandibular setback-orthodontic treatment. METHODS: The sample included 54 patients (28 males, 26 females) who were diagnosed with skeletal Class Ⅲ malocclusion. Patents in group A (n=28) underwent mandibular setback surgery and orthodontic treatment. Cone-beam CT (CBCT) was taken at one week before treatment (T0), 6 months (T1) and 3 years after surgery (T2).Patents in group B(n=26) underwent Le Fort I procedures with bilateral split ramus osteotomies-orthodontic treatment; The raw data reconstructed into 3D model. Sagittal and transversal measurements, cross sectional areas, partial and total volumes were evaluated. The data were statistically analyzed using SPSS 17.0 software package to determine the changes in each group. RESULTS: Six months after surgery, the sagittal diameters and cross sectional areas of each section in group A were significantly decreased (P<0.05). Oropharyngeal volume, hypopharyngeal volume and total volume were significantly narrowed (P<0.01). Three years after surgery, only sagittal and cross sectional areas in the first cervical vertebra plane were returned to the original levels (T2-T0:P>0.05, T2-T1: P<0.05). In group B, the sagittal diameters and cross sectional areas of each section (except CV1 plane) were significantly decreased(P<0.05) 3 years after surgery, but most measurements returned to the original levels. CONCLUSIONS: Pharyngeal airway space decreased after combined therapy in the short term; however, relapse occurred and not to its original position in the long term.

RESUMO

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the brain plays an important role in the progression of hypertension and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a major component of ROS. The aim of this study is to explore whether endogenous H2O2 changed by polyethylene glycol-catalase (PEG-CAT) and aminotriazole (ATZ) in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) regulates neurotransmitters, renin-angiotensin system (RAS), and cytokines, and whether subsequently affects the renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) in high salt-induced hypertension. Male Sprague-Dawley rats received a high-salt diet (HS, 8% NaCl) or a normal-salt diet (NS, 0.3% NaCl) for 10 weeks. Then rats were treated with bilateral PVN microinjection of PEG-CAT (0.2 i.u./50nl), an analog of endogenous catalase, the catalase inhibitor ATZ (10nmol/50nl) or vehicle. High salt-fed rats had significantly increased MAP, RSNA, plasma norepinephrine (NE) and pro-inflammatory cytokines (PICs). In addition, rats with high-salt diet had higher levels of NOX-2, NOX-4 (subunits of NAD(P)H oxidase), angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), interleukin-1beta (IL-1ß), glutamate and NE, and lower levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) in the PVN than normal diet rats. Bilateral PVN microinjection of PEG-CAT attenuated the levels of RAS and restored the balance of neurotransmitters and cytokines, while microinjection of ATZ into the PVN augmented those changes occurring in hypertensive rats. Our findings demonstrate that ROS component H2O2 in the PVN regulating MAP and RSNA are partly due to modulate neurotransmitters, renin-angiotensin system, and cytokines within the PVN in salt-induced hypertension.

RESUMO

Control over cell-material surface interactions is the key to many new and improved biomedical devices. In this study, we present a simple yet effective surface modification method that allows for the surface reconstruction and formation of cell outer membrane mimetic structure on coatings that have significantly increased hemocompatibility. To achieve this, a phosphorylcholine end-capped poly(butylene succinate) (PBS-PC) was synthesized and dip-coated on coverslips. The surface structure of the amphiphilic PBS-PC film was reconstructed by heating in a vacuum oven to obtain the less hydrophilic surface and by immersing in hot water to obtain the more hydrophilic surface. Significant changes in the surface element concentration were observed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and changes in surface wettability were measured by sensitive dynamic contact angle technique. Scanning electron microscope images showed different morphologies of the reconstructed surfaces. Interestingly, the reconstruction between the less hydrophilic and more hydrophilic surfaces is reversible. More importantly, both the reconstructed surfaces are stable in room condition for more than 6 months, and both the surfaces show significant improvement in hemocompatibility as revealed by protein adsorption and platelet adhesion measurements. This reversible surface reconstruction strategy and the interesting results may be significant for fabricating stable and hemocompatible surfaces on differently shaped biomedical devices.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the three-dimensional changes of pharyngeal airway in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion after the combined orthodontic and orthognathic treatment. METHODS: Twenty patients (9 males, 11 females) and 40 subjects with normal occlusion were involved in the study. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) were performed on patients one week and six months after treatment. Raw data were reconstructed into three-dimensional model and sagittal and transversal measurements, cross sectional areas, partial and total volumes were computed. RESULTS: After treatment, the sagittal diameters of each section were significantly reduced by (2.7 ± 3.5), (3.0 ± 3.8), (2.7 ± 3.3) mm, respectively (P < 0.05). The transversal diameter of laryngopharyngeal airway constricted significantly by (4.8 ± 4.1) mm (P < 0.05). Cross sectional areas and volumes of each part in patients after surgery were significantly narrower compared with those of the controls. CONCLUSIONS: After combined therapy the pharyngeal airway space decreased.
