RESUMO

Metamaterial (MM) sensors and devices, usually consisting of artificially structured composite materials with engineered responses that are mainly determined by the unit structure rather than the bulk properties or composition, offer new functionalities not readily available in nature. A set of implantable and resorbable therapeutic MM devices at terahertz (THz) frequencies are designed and fabricated by patterning magnesium split ring resonators on drug-loaded silk protein substrates with controllable device degradation and drug release rates. To demonstrate proof-of-concept, a set of silk-based, antibiotics-loaded MM devices, which can serve as degradable antibacterial skin patches with capabilities to monitor drug-release in real time are fabricated. The extent of drug release, which correlates with the degradation of the MM skin patch, can be monitored by analyzing the resonant responses in reflection during degradation using a portable THz camera. Animal experiments are performed to demonstrate the in vivo degradation process and the efficacy of the devices for antibacterial treatment. Thus, the implantable and resorbable therapeutic MM devices do not need to be retrieved once implanted, providing an appealing alternative for in-vivo sensing and in situ treatment applications.

A number of epidemiological studies have reported that chronic exposure to high concentrations of fluoride not only causes dental and skeletal fluorosis but additionally affects serum levels of reproductive hormones. However, possible interaction between fluoride exposure and estrogen receptor alpha (ESRα) gene polymorphisms on sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and androgen binding protein (ABP) of male farmers has not been detailed. Here, we conducted a cross-sectional study including 348 male farmers with different fluoride exposure levels from drinking water in Henan province of China to explore effects of fluoride exposure and ESRα genetic variation on serum SHBG and ABP levels. We found serum SHBG levels in male farmers from the high exposure group to be lower than those of the low exposure group. We also found that concentrations of SHBG affected ABP levels. Furthermore, fluoride exposure and single nucleotide polymorphisms at the XbaI and rs3798577 loci of the ESRα gene affected serum ABP levels. Our findings suggest that chronic fluoride exposure from drinking water is associated with alterations of serum SHBG and ABP concentrations in local male farmers and that the effect of fluoride exposure on ABP levels vary depending on ESRα gene polymorphisms.

Ni60-WC coatings with different WC contents on the bucket tooth substrates were pre- pared using laser cladding technology. Their abrasive wear properties were assessed using the dry sand rubber wheel test system. The substrate and the hard-facing layer were tested for comparison. The results showed that the hardness of the Ni60-WC coatings increased with the increase in WC content. The wear resistance of the bucket tooth substrate was greatly improved by hard-facing and laser cladding Ni60-WC coatings. The wear rate of the hard-facing layer was reduced to 1/6 of that of the tooth substrate. The wear rate of the laser cladding coatings with 20-40 wt.% WC was similar to that of the hard-facing layer. It is worth mentioning that the wear rate of the coatings with 60-80 wt.% WC was only 1/4 of that of the hard-facing layer. Micro-cutting with surface plastic deformation was the main wear mechanism of the substrate to form narrow and deep furrows. The wear mechanism of the hard-facing layer was mainly plastic deformation with a wide groove, and the surface cracks promoted the removal of the material. The removal of the binder phase caused by micro-cutting was the main wear mechanism of the laser cladding Ni60-WC coatings. However, the hard phase of WC hinders micro-cutting and plastic deformation, which improves the wear resistance of the coating.

Virgin microplastics (MPs) would undergo aging process when entering environment, the adsorption capability of pollutants onto MPs may change during the aging process. To better understand the influence of aged polyethylene microplastics (PE-MP) on the bioavailability of three heavy metals (Zn, Pb, and Cd) in soil, hydrogen peroxide exposure (3% H2O2) and ultraviolet irradiation methods were employed to simulate the aging process. After aging process, different amount (0.1%, 1%, 10%) of PE-MP (pristine or aged) was added into soil to assess the ability of soil (containing PE-MP) adsorbing heavy metal. Moreover, different amount (0.01%, 0.1%, 1%) of PE-MP (pristine or aged) was added into soil to cultivate the earthworms to assess the impact of PE-MP on bioavailability of three heavy metals. Results indicated that the aged and virgin PE-MP had similar capability to adsorb heavy metal, the adsorption ability of Zn2+, Pb2+, and Cd2+ to pristine PE-MP were 2.42, 7.47, and 7.76 mg/g, respectively. The concentration of Zn or Pb in earthworms in treatments of metal +1% PE-MP was slightly higher than that in single metal (Zn or Pb) treatment, moreover, the concentration of Cd in earthworms in treatment of Cd + 1% PE-MP was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than that in single Cd treatment, exhibiting that 1% of PE-MP enhanced the bioavailability of heavy metals in soil. However, heavy metal concentrations in earthworms in treatments of metal + pristine PE-MP showed insignificant (p > 0.05) difference with those in treatments of metal + aged PE-MP, indicating that the aging process in this study did not change the environmental influence of PE-MP on heavy metals bioavailability. Superoxide dismutase activity, reactive oxygen species level, malondialdehyde content, and related gene expression in earthworms showed that PE-MP and heavy metals would bring toxic synergy to earthworms, therefore, the influence of MPs should be comprehensively considered when determining the environmental risk of heavy metals in soil.

Microplastics have become a global environmental problem due to the ubiquitous existence. The impacts of microplastics on heavy metals behaviors in aquatic environment are widely investigated, however, the impacts of microplastics on bioaccumulation of heavy metals in vegetables in terrestrial environment are seldom investigated. Herein, batch experiments were carried out, the microplastics (0.001%, 0.01%, 0.1%) and heavy metal (50, 100 mg/kg Cu2+ or 25, 50 mg/kg Pb2+) were single or combined spiked into soil to cultivate rapes (Brassica napus L.) in greenhouse. Copper and lead contents of rapes in MP0.1+Cu100 and MP0.1+Pb50 treatments reached 38.9 mg/kg and 9.4 mg/kg, which were significantly (p < 0.05) higher than those of Cu100 (35.3 mg/kg) and Pb50 (8.7 mg/kg) treatments, respectively. Results showed that microplastics in soil would facilitate heavy metals entering rape plants. In addition, contents of total chlorophyll, soluble sugar, vitamin C, malondialdehyde contents, activities of superoxide dismutase and guaiacol peroxidase, as well as related gene expression were analyzed to investigate the toxic effects of these pollutants (microplastics, Cu, and Pb) to rape plants. Malondialdehyde contents of rapes in MP0.1+Cu50, MP0.1+Cu100, MP0.1+Pb25, and MP0.1+Pb50 treatments reached 0.102 mmol/mg Protein, 0.123 mmol/mg Protein, 0.101 mmol/mg Protein, and 0.119 mmol/mg Protein, which were 1.42, 1.37, 1.46, and 1.45 times of those in Cu50, Cu100, Pb25, and Pb50 treatments, respectively. The changes of malondialdehyde content, activities of superoxide dismutase and guaiacol peroxidase, as well as contents of sugar and vitamin C indicated that microplastics in soil would bring severer damage and deteriorate quality of rape plants. The data in this study indicated that microplastics would increase the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in vegetables and damage to vegetables.

The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (S. frugiperda) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a worldwide, disruptive, agricultural pest species. The larvae of S. frugiperda feed on seedling, leave, and kernel of crops with chewing mouthparts, resulting in reduced crop yields. Serotonin is an important biogenic amine acting as a neural circuit modulator known to mediate lots of behaviors including feeding in insects. In order to explore the serotonergic neural network in the nervous system of larval S. frugiperda, we performed immunohistochemical experiments to examine the neuropil structure of the brain and the gnathal ganglion with antisynapsin and to examine their serotonergic neurons with antiserotonin serum. Our data show that the brain of larval S. frugiperda contains three neuromeres: the tritocerebrum, the deutocerebrum, and the protocerebrum. The gnathal ganglion also contains three neuromeres: the mandibular neuromere, the maxillary neuromere, and the labial neuromere. There are about 40 serotonergic neurons in the brain and about 24 serotonergic neurons in the gnathal ganglion. Most of these neurons are wide-field neurons giving off processes in several neuropils of the brain and the gnathal ganglion. Serotonergic neuron processes are mainly present in the protocerebrum. A pair of serotonergic neurons associated with the deutocerebrum has arborizations in the contralateral antennal lobe and bilateral superior lateral protocerebra. In the gnathal ganglion, the serotonergic neuron processes are also widespread throughout the neuropil and some process projections extend to the tritocerebrum. These findings on the serotonergic neuron network in larval S. frugiperda allow us to explore the important roles of serotonin in feeding and find a potential approach to modulate the feeding behavior of the gluttonous pest and reduce its damage.

Self-powered electronics using triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) is drawing increasing efforts and rapid advancements in eco/biocompatible energy harvesting, intelligent sensing, and biomedical applications. Currently, the triboelectric performances are mainly determined by the pair materials' inherent electron affinity difference, and merely tuned by chemical or physical methods, which significantly limit the optional variety and output capability, especially for natural-biomaterial-based TENGs. Herein, a biocompatible triboelectric material with a programmable triboelectric property, multiple functionalization, large-scale-fabrication capability, and transcendent output performance is designed, by genetically engineering recombinant spider silk proteins (RSSP). Featuring totally "green" large-scale manufacturing, the water lithography technique is introduced to the RSSP-TENG with facilely adjustable surface morphology, chemically modifiable surface properties, and controllable protein conformation. By virtue of the high electrical power, a proof-of-principle drug-free RSSP-patch is built, showing outstanding antibacterial performances both in vitro and in vivo. This work provides a novel high-performance biomaterial-based TENG and extends its potential for multifunctional applications.

BACKGROUND: Osteoblasts and periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) play an important role in maintaining physiologic function of periodontal tissues and participating in periodontal regeneration. Elucidation of interactions between osteoblasts and PDLSCs will aid understanding of periodontal regeneration mechanisms. This study aims to determine whether preosteoblasts can promote osteoblastic/cementoblastic differentiation of PDLSCs. METHODS: PDLSCs were cultured alone (control group), or cocultured indirectly with human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) (HGFs group) or MC3T3-E1 cells (OB groups). Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and gene/protein expressions levels of ALP, runt-related transcription factor-2, and osteopontin (OPN) were assessed. Cementum attachment protein and cementum protein 23 messenger RNA expressions were also evaluated. Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-2 secreted by HGFs/MC3T3-E1 cells was assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Extracellular matrix calcification was measured by staining to quantify calcium content. RESULTS: ALP activity and gene/protein expression levels of osteogenic markers were significantly higher in the OB groups compared with the HGFs and control groups. Optimal enhancement of these parameters occurred at cell ratios of 2:1 to 1:1 (MC3T3-E1:PDLSCs). Mineralized nodule formation and calcium content were significantly increased in the OB groups compared with the HGF and control groups. The greatest improvement took place at the 2:1 (MC3T3-E1:PDLSCs) seeding ratio. BMP-2 from MC3T3-E1-conditioned medium was significantly and time-dependently increased compared with that from HGF-conditioned medium. CONCLUSION: Preosteoblasts can indirectly enhance the osteoblastic/cementoblastic differentiation and mineralization of PDLSCs with an optimal preosteoblasts:PDLSCs ratio in the range of 2:1 to 1:1.

The occurrence of endemic fluorosis is derived from high fluoride levels in drinking water and industrial fumes or dust. Reproductive disruption is also a major harm caused by fluoride exposure besides dental and skeletal lesions. However, few studies focus on the mechanism of fluoride exposure on male reproductive function, especially the possible interaction of fluoride exposure and gene polymorphism on male reproductive hormones. Therefore, we conducted a cross-sectional study in rural areas of Henan province in China to explore the interaction between the estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) gene and fluoride exposure on reproductive hormone levels in male farmers living in the endemic fluorosis villages. The results showed that fluoride exposure significantly increased the serum level of estradiol in the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular (HPT) axis in male farmers. Moreover, the observations indicated that fluoride exposure and genetic markers had an interaction on serum concentration of follicle-stimulating hormone and estradiol, and the interaction among different loci of the ERα gene could impact the serum testosterone level. Findings in the present work suggest that chronic fluoride exposure in drinking water could modulate the levels of reproductive hormones in males living in endemic fluorosis areas, and the interaction between fluoride exposure and ERα polymorphisms might affect the serum levels of hormones in the HPT axis in male farmers.

AIM: To assess the effectiveness of and complications associated with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and gelatin sponge particles embolization of splenic artery pseudoaneurysm complicating chronic alcoholic pancreatitis. METHODS: A 42-year-old man with splenic artery pseudo-aneurysm formation secondary to chronic alcoholic pancreatitis was admitted. We used PVA and gelatin sponge particles embolization of splenic artery pseudoaneurysm by superselective embolization techniques. RESULTS: The splenic artery pseudoaneurysm was successfully controlled with splenic embolization. The patient was discharged in 9 d with complete recovery. CONCLUSION: This case confirms that superselective transcatheter embolization by PVA and gelatin sponge particles may represent an effective treatment for pseudoaneurysm caused by chronic alcoholic pancreatitis in the absence of other therapeutic alternatives.

RESUMO

Hollow structures have attracted ever-growing interest owing to their various excellent properties. However, a facile strategy for their fabrication is still desired. Herein, Pd-Pt alloy with three different morphologies, that is, cubes, hollow cubes, and truncated octahedrons, is synthesized by using a one-pot, template-free method. The mechanism and dynamics of this system is also studied in detail. In particular, the hollow cubic structure represents enhanced catalytic activity in both coupling reactions and in the electrochemical oxidation of formic acid.
