RESUMO

Water-soluble synthetic polymers (WSPs) are distinct from insoluble plastic particles, which are both critical components of synthetic polymers. In the history of human-made macromolecules, WSPs have consistently portrayed a crucial role and served as the ingredients of a variety of products (e.g., flocculants, thickeners, solubilizers, surfactants, etc.) commonly used in human society. However, the environmental exposures and risks of WSPs with different functions remain poorly understood. This paper provides a critical review of the usage, environmental fate, environmental persistence, and biological consequences of multiple types of WSPs in commercial and industrial production. Investigations have identified a wide market of applications and potential environmental threats of various types of WSPs, but we still lack the suitable assessment tools. The effects of physicochemical properties and environmental factors on the environmental distribution as well as the transport and transformation of WSPs are further summarized. Evidence regarding the degradation of WSPs, including mechanical, thermal, hydrolytic, photoinduced, and biological degradation is summarized, and their environmental persistence is discussed. The toxicity data show that some WSPs can cause adverse effects on aquatic species and microbial communities through intrinsic toxicity and physical hazards. This review may serve as a guide for environmental risk assessment to help develop a sustainable path for WSP management.

RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs), pollutants detected at high frequency in the environment, can be served as carriers of many kinds of pollutants and have typical characteristics of environmental persistence and bioaccumulation. The potential risks of MPs ecological environment and health have been widely concerned by scholars and engineering practitioners. Previous reviews mostly focused on the pollution characteristics and ecological toxicity of MPs, but there were few reviews on MPs analysis methods, aging mechanisms and removal strategies. To address this issue, this review first summarizes the contamination characteristics of MPs in different environmental media, and then focuses on analyzing the detection methods and analyzing the aging mechanisms of MPs, which include physical aging and chemical aging. Further, the ecotoxicity of MPs to different organisms and the associated enhanced removal strategies are outlined. Finally, some unresolved research questions related to MPs are prospected. This review focuses on the ageing and ecotoxic behaviour of MPs and provides some theoretical references for the potential environmental risks of MPs and their deep control.

RESUMO

Polyethylene (PE) microplastic, which is detected in various environmental media worldwide, also inevitably enters wastewater treatment plants, which may have an impact on anaerobic processes in wastewater treatment. In this work, the effect of PE microplastics on anaerobic sulfur transformation was explored. Experimental results showed that PE microplastics addition at 0.1%- 0.5% w/w promoted H2S production by 14.8%-27.4%. PE microplastics enhanced the release of soluble organic sulfur and inorganic sulfate, and promoted the bioprocesses of organosulfur compounds hydrolysis and sulfate reduction. Mechanism analysis showed that PE microplastics increased the content of electroactive components (e.g., protein and humic acids) contained in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). In particular, PE microplastics increased the proportion and the dipole moment of α-helix, an important component involved in electron transfer contained in extracelluar protein, which provided more electron transfer sites and promoted the α-helix mediated electron transfer. These enhanced the direct electron transfer ability of EPSs, which might explain why PE microplastics facilitated the bioprocesses of organosulfur compounds hydrolysis and sulfate reduction. Correspondingly, metagenomic analysis revealed that PE microplastics increased the relative abundance of S2- producers (e.g., Desulfobacula and Desulfonema) and the relative abundance of functional genes involved in anaerobic sulfur transformation (e.g., PepD and cysD), which were beneficial to H2S production in anaerobic system.

RESUMO

Acidic proteins are critical to biomineral formation, although their precise mechanistic function remains poorly understood. A number of recent studies have suggested a nonclassical mineralization model that emphasizes the importance of the formation of polymer-stabilized mineral clusters or particles; however, it has been difficult to characterize the precursors experimentally due to their transient nature. Here, we successfully captured stepwise evolution of transient CaP clusters in mineralizing solutions and studied the roles of functional polymers with laser light scattering (LLS) to determine how these polymers influence the stability of nanoclusters. We found that the polymer structure can alter CaP aggregation mechanisms, whereas the polymer concentration strongly influences the rate of CaP aggregation. Our results indicate that the ability of acidic biomolecules to control the formation of relatively stable nanoclusters in the early stages may be critical for intrafibrillar mineralization. More importantly, LLS provided information about the size and the structural evolution of CaP aggregates, which will help define the process of controlled biomineralization.

RESUMO

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic wastes can bring a series of problems during pyrolysis or incineration such as the emission of dioxins, corrosion, slagging in the reactors, etc. Hydrothermal treatment of PVC plastics has been intensively studied as it can efficiently remove chlorine from PVC plastics under relatively mild reaction conditions (220-300 °C) to provide value-added products. Meanwhile, the research progress, knowledge gaps, and challenges in this field have not been well addressed yet. This paper gives a comprehensive review of hydrothermal dechlorination of PVC plastics regarding reactors, process variables and fundamentals, possible applications, and challenges. The main pathways of hydrothermal dechlorination of PVC plastics are elimination and -OH nucleophilic substitution. Catalytic hydrothermal and co-hydrothermal optimize the chemical reactions and transportation, boosting the dechlorination of PVC plastics. Hydrochar derived from PVC plastics, on the one hand, is coalified close to sub-bituminous and bituminous coal and can be used as low-chlorine solid fuel. On the other hand, it is also a porous material with aromatic structure and oxygen-containing functional groups, with good potential as adsorbent or energy storage materials. Further studies are expected to focus on waste liquid treatment, revealing the energy and economic balance, reducing the dechlorination temperature and pressure, expanding the application of products, etc. for promoting the implementation of the hydrothermal treatment of PVC plastic wastes.

RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) and Cd have been proven to inhibit methane production from anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge. However, the published studies mainly focused on their single inhibition. This cannot reflect the real-world situations where MPs and Cd co-exist. This study therefore aims to reveal the combined effect of MPs and Cd on anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge. Experimental results showed that PVC-MPs at environmentally relevant levels (e.g., 1, 10 particles/g total solids (TS)) did not affect methane yield but decrease the toxicity of Cd. When PVC-MPs were 30 particles/g TS, the cumulative methane production recovered from 58.8 % (in the presence of 5 mg Cd/g TS) to 89.7 % of the control. Organic fluxes were significantly increased compared with the control, particularly affecting the content of dissolved substances and short-chain fatty acids during anaerobic digestion. Mechanistic exploration showed that the adsorption of Cd by PVC-MPs was higher than that of sludge-substrate, which reduced the bioavailability of Cd by anaerobes, as evidenced by the increased anaerobes driven carbon flux from solid-phase to bio-methane during anaerobic digestion. Overall, these findings identified important factors in determining the toxicity of pollutants on anaerobic digestion process, providing precise data for toxicity evaluation of MPs and metals in anaerobic environment.

RESUMO

Florfenicol (FF), an emerging pollutant antibiotic that is difficult to biodegrade, inevitably enters sewage treatment facilities with high level. To date, however, the performance and related mechanism of FF on enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) have not been reported. In order to fill this gap, this work investigated the potential impacts of FF on EBPR and revealed the relevant mechanisms. The effect of FF on EBPR was dose-dependent, that was, low dose had no effect on EBPR, while high FF concentration inhibited EBPR. Mechanism investigation showed that FF had no effect on anaerobic phosphate release, but reduced oxic phosphorus uptake. Three-dimensional Excitation-emission Matrix fluorescence spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed that FF affected the structure and components of activated sludge extracellular polymers (EPS). High content of FF stimulated sludge to secrete more EPS. High level of FF reduced the relative abundance of microorganisms responsible for biological phosphorus removal. Microbiological community structure analysis indicated 2.0 mg FF/L increased the relative abundance of Candidatus_Competibacter and Terrimonas from 9.22 % and 12.49 % to 19.00 % and 16.28 %, respectively, but significantly reduced the relative abundance of Chinophagaceae from 11.32 % to 0.38 %, compared with the blank.

RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) have been frequently detected in effluent wastewater and sludge in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), the discharge and agricultural application of which represent a primary source of environmental MPs contamination. As important as quantitative removal is, changes of physicochemical characteristics of MPs (e.g., shapes, sizes, density, crystallinity) in WWTPs are crucial to their environmental behaviors and risks and have not been put enough attention yet. This review is therefore to provide a current overview on the changes of physicochemical characteristics of MPs in WWTPs and their corresponding environmental risks. The changes of physicochemical characteristics as well as the underlying mechanisms of MPs in different successional wastewater and sludge treatment stages that mainly driven by mechanical (e.g., mixing, pumping, filtering), chemical (e.g., flocculation, advanced oxidation, ultraviolet radiation, thermal hydrolysis, incineration and lime stabilization), biological (e.g., activated sludge process, anaerobic digestion, composition) and their combination effects were first recapitulated. Then, the inevitable correlations between physicochemical characteristics of MPs and their environmental behaviors (e.g., migration, adsorption) and risks (e.g., animals, plants, microbes), are comprehensively discussed with particular emphasis on the leaching of additives and physicochemical characteristics that affect the co-exist pollutants behavior of MPs in WWTPs on environmental risks. Finally, knowing the summarized above, some relating unanswered questions and concerns that need to be unveiled in the future are prospected. The physicochemical properties of MPs change after passing through WWTP, leading to subsequent changes in co-contaminant adsorption, migration, and toxicity. This could threaten our ecosystems and human health and must be worth investigating.

RESUMO

Lignin, a biological resource with great potential, can be as high as ∼16% of the total organics in the waste activated sludge (WAS). This work therefore aims to fill the knowledge gap about the effect of lignin on short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production from anaerobic fermentation of sludge. Experimental results showed that lignin promoted rather than inhibited SCFAs production. Specifically, the presence of 15% lignin promoted the SCFAs production from 129.1 ± 6.5 to 223.14 ± 7.8 mg COD/g VSS compared with the control, and the proportion of acetic increased by 61.8%, while that of propionic decreased by 44.9%. Mechanism exploration revealed that lignin improved the solubilization of biodegradable substrates due to its hydrophobic characteristics. In addition, lignin enhanced the acidogenesis process, possibly by perfecting the electron transfer chain in the fermentation system, and the quinone structure in lignin may compete electrons with methanogens to inhibit the consumption of SCFAs. Microbiological analysis showed that the abundance of microorganisms related to acidogenesi, especially the acetogenesis, including Proteiniclasticum sp., Acetoanaerobium sp., in the fermenter with lignin increased, which caused the community to shift towards specialized and diverse SCFAs production.

RESUMO

In this study, a novel and efficient heterogeneous electro-Fenton (EF) process with a potassium ferrate (K2FeO4) modified carbon felt (Fe-CF) cathode was developed for chloramphenicol (CAP) removal. The catalytic activity was assessed by the comparison of different systems and the effects of multiple operating parameters (K2FeO4 dosage, initial solution pH, applied current) and co-existing constituents. Results indicated that the Fe-CF cathode exhibited excellent performance for CAP degradation (almost 100% removal efficiency within 60 min) over a wide range of pH (pH 3-9) during heterogeneous EF ascribed to the synergistic effect of embedded iron species and porous graphitic carbon structure and effective utilization of the in-situ generated H2O2. Moreover, the Fe-CF cathode possessed good recyclability with low metal leaching (98.2% CAP removal efficiency after reused for 5 times) and outstanding real water application performance. The ∙OH and O2∙- were responsible for CAP degradation, while ∙OH played a main role. Moreover, the toxicity evaluation by E. coli growth experiments demonstrated an efficient toxicity reduction in this system. Overall, a novel heterogeneous EF functional cathode with superior performance was fabricated via a green, low-cost one-step method, which shows promising application potential for actual wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

RATIONALE: Bohring-Opitz syndrome is a severe congenital disorder associated with a de novo mutation in the additional sex combs-like 1 (ASXL1) gene, and it is characterized by symptoms that include developmental delay and musculoskeletal and neurological features. PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient was a girl, an in vitro fertilization (IVF) baby, with delayed motor development, drooling, short stature, slow growth, low muscle tone, image diagnosis of hypoplasia of the corpus callosum, delayed tooth eruption, high palatal arch, adduction of the thumb, drooling, not chewing, excessive joint activity, and ligament relaxation. DIAGNOSIS: Whole-exome sequencing analysis detected 1 novel disruptive frameshift mutation in ASXL1 in the proband but wild-type ASXL1 in both parents. INTERVENTIONS: Approximately 1 year of rehabilitation training, which included exercise therapy, toy imitation operation, cognition of daily objects, daily living skills training, gesture language training, oral muscle training, and hand movement training. OUTCOMES: After approximately 1 year of training, the patient was 3 years old and able to eat normally without drooling. She was able to grasp objects and pick them up after they fell. She was able to grasp small objects and actively played with toys. In addition, she was able to crawl on the floor (at slow speed, with poor initiative), stand with assistance, and walk with assistance; she was unstable when standing unassisted (standing unassisted for 8 seconds at most during training). LESSON: ASXL1 c.3762delT is a novel mutation that may be caused by IVF. This finding suggests that appropriate gene mutation detection approaches may be necessary for IVF technology.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to isolate a mould from the surface of manganese slag which had strong resistance and high adsorption of Mn(2 + ), and to determine the effects of initial Mn(2 + ) concentration, incubation temperature, rotation speed and inoculation amount on adsorption of Mn(2 + ) from manganese waste water solution. The result showed that a mould (A5) which was isolated from manganese slag had the adsorption rate of Mn(2 + ) to 97.5% at the initial pH value 6, inoculation amount 2%, rotation speed 150 r/min, a concentration of Mn(2 + ) 500 mg/L, and a temperature of 28 degrees C cultivated for 50 h. As there is no research on adsorption of Mn(2 + ) from manganese waste water by fungi before, this research showed a theoretical guidance on this field.

RESUMO

Deterioration of anaerobic digestion can occur with the presence of polyacrylamide (PAM) in waste activated sludge, but the information on alleviating this deterioration is still limited. In this study, the simultaneous alleviation of negative effect of PAM and improvement of methane production during anaerobic digestion was accomplished by microwave pretreatment. Experimental results showed that with the microwave pretreatment times increased from 0 to 12 min, the biochemical methane potential of PAM-flocculated sludge (12 g PAM/kg total solids) asymptotically increased from 123.1 to 242.5 mL/g volatile solids, hydrolysis rate increased from 0.06 to 0.13 d-1. Mechanism analysis indicated that the microwave pretreatment accelerated the release and hydrolysis of organic substrates from PAM-flocculated sludge, facilitated the breaking of large firm "PAM-sludge" floccules, and benefited the degradation of PAM, which alleviated the PAM inhibitory impacts on digestion and meanwhile provided better contact between the released organic substrates and anaerobic bacteria for methane production.

RESUMO

Cationic polyacrylamide, a flocculation powder widely used in wastewater pretreatment and sludge dewatering, was highly accumulated in waste activated sludge. However, its effect on short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) accumulation from anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge has not been investigated. This work therefore aims to deeply unveil how cationic polyacrylamide affects SCFAs production, through both long-term and batch tests using either real waste activated sludge or synthetic wastewaters as fermentation substrates. Experimental results showed that the presence of cationic polyacrylamide not only significantly decreased the accumulation of SCFAs but also affected the composition of individual SCFA. The concentration of SCFAs decreased from 3374.7 to 2391.7 mg COD/L with cationic polyacrylamide level increasing from 0 to 12 g/kg of total suspended solids, whereas the corresponding percentage of acetic acid increased from 45.2% to 55.5%. The mechanism studies revealed that although cationic polyacrylamide could be partially degraded to produce SCFAs during anaerobic fermentation, cationic polyacrylamide and its major degradation metabolite, polyacrylic acid, inhibited all the sludge solubilization, hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis and homoacetogenesis processes to some extents. As a result, the accumulation of SCFAs in the cationic polyacrylamide added systems decreased rather than increased. However, the inhibition to acetogenesis and homoacetogenesis was slighter than that to acidogenesis, leading to an increase of acetic acid to total SCFAs. It was further found that cationic polyacrylamide had stronger ability to adhere to protein molecules surface, which inhibited the bioconversion of proteins more severely. Illumina MiSeq sequencing analyses showed that cationic polyacrylamide decreased microbial community diversity, altered community structure and changed activities of key enzymes responsible for SCFAs accumulation.

RESUMO

Deterioration of anaerobic digestion can occur with the presence of polyacrylamide (PAM) in waste activated sludge, and little information on mitigating this deterioration is currently available. In this study, simultaneous mitigation of PAM negative effects and improvement of methane production was accomplished by thermal-alkaline pretreatment. Under the optimized pretreatment conditions (i.e., 75 °C, pH 11.0 for 17.5 h), the biochemical methane potential of PAM-flocculated sludge increased from 100.5 to 210.8 mL/g VS and the hydrolysis rate increased from 0.122 to 0.187 d-1. Mechanism investigations revealed that the pretreatment not only broke the large firm floccules, improved the degradation of PAM, but also facilitated the release of biodegradable organics from sludge, which thereby provided better growth environment and enough nutrients to anaerobic microbes for methane production. The activities of key enzymes responsible for methane production and PAM degradation were greatly improved in pretreated reactor, with the accumulation of acrylamide being avoided.

RESUMO

The performance of biological phosphorus removal (BPR) in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with single-stage oxic process was investigated using simulated municipal wastewater. The experimental results showed that BPR could be achieved in a SBR without anaerobic phase, which was conventionally considered as a key phase for BPR. Phosphorus (P) concentration 0.22-1.79 mg L(-1) in effluent can be obtained after 4h aeration when P concentration in influent was about 15-20 mg L(-1), the dissolved oxygen (DO) was controlled at 3+/-0.2 mg L(-1) during aerobic phase and pH was maintained 7+/-0.1, which indicated the efficiencies of P removal were achieved 90% above. Experimental results also showed that P was mainly stored in the form of intracellular storage of polyphosphate (poly-P), and about 207.235 mg phosphates have been removed by the discharge of rich-phosphorus sludge for each SBR cycle. However, the energy storage poly-beta-hydroxyalkanoates (PHA) was almost kept constant at a low level (5-6 mg L(-1)) during the process. Those results showed that phosphate could be transformed to poly-P with single-stage oxic process without PHA accumulation, and BPR could be realized in net phosphate removal.

RESUMO

Previous investigations showed that cationic polyacrylamide (cPAM), a flocculant widely used in wastewater pretreatment and waste activated sludge dewatering, deteriorated methane production during anaerobic digestion of sludge. However, details of how cPAM affects methane production are poorly understood, hindering deep control of sludge anaerobic digestion systems. In this study, the mechanisms of cPAM affecting sludge anaerobic digestion were investigated in batch and long-term tests using either real sludge or synthetic wastewaters as the digestion substrates. Experimental results showed that the presence of cPAM not only slowed the process of anaerobic digestion but also decreased methane yield. The maximal methane yield decreased from 139.1 to 86.7 mL/g of volatile suspended solids (i.e., 1861.5 to 1187.0 mL/L) with the cPAM level increasing from 0 to 12 g/kg of total suspended solids (i.e., 0-236.7 mg/L), whereas the corresponding digestion time increased from 22 to 26 d. Mechanism explorations revealed that the addition of cPAM significantly restrained the sludge solubilization, hydrolysis, acidogenesis, and methanogenesis processes. It was found that ∼46% of cAPM was degraded in the anaerobic digestion, and the degradation products significantly affected methane production. Although the theoretically biochemical methane potential of cPAM is higher than that of protein and carbohydrate, only 6.7% of the degraded cPAM was transformed to the final product, methane. Acrylamide, acrylic acid, and polyacrylic acid were found to be the main degradation metabolites, and their amount accounted for ∼50% of the degraded cPAM. Further investigations showed that polyacrylic acid inhibited all the solubilization, hydrolysis, acidogenesis, and methanogenesis processes while acrylamide and acrylic acid inhibited the methanogenesis significantly.

RESUMO

Perchlorate bioreduction coupled to methane oxidation was successfully achieved without the addition of nitrate or nitrite in a membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR) inoculated with a mixture of freshwater sediments and anaerobic digester sludge as well as return activated sludge. The reactor was operated at different methane pressures (60, 40 and 20 Kpa) and influent perchlorate concentrations (1, 5 and 10 mg/L) to evaluate the biochemical process of perchlorate bioreduction coupled to methane oxidation. Perchlorate was completely reduced with a higher removal flux of 92.75 mg/m2·d using methane as the sole carbon source and electron donor, other than hydrogen or other limiting organics. Quantitative real-time PCR showed that bacteria prevailed over archaea and the abundances of mcrA, pMMO, pcrA, and nirS genes were correlated with the influent perchlorate flux. High-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes demonstrated that the functional community consisted of methanotrophs, methylotrophs, perchlorate-reducing bacteria, as well as various denitrifiers.

RESUMO

Short-term and long-term effects of nickel (Ni) (0.1-10mg/L) on the physicochemical properties of activated sludge, including the flocculability, settleability, and dewaterability, were investigated. It was found that these properties were unaffected after short-term exposure (1day) to Ni(II) even at the level of 10mg/L. After long-term exposure (60days) to 1 and 10mg/L of Ni(II), however, the sludge flocculability has seriously deteriorated, while the settleability, and dewaterability became gradually better than the control. The mechanism studies revealed that long-term exposure to Ni(II) resulted in the decrease of protein content in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and the damage to EPS structures. Although Ni(II) did not bring any adverse effect on the cell membrane, the relative hydrophobicity of activated sludge was significantly decreased. The negative effects on the flocculability and phosphorus removal performance of activated sludge could be completely eliminated by adding the chelator such as EDTA and citrate.
