BACKGROUND: Nanoplastics, are emerging pollutants, present a potential hazard to food security and human health. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (Nano-TiO2), serving as nano-fertilizer in agriculture, may be important in alleviating polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) toxicity. RESULTS: Here, we performed transcriptomic, metabolomic and physiological analyzes to identify the role of Nano-TiO2 in regulating the metabolic processes in PSNPs-stressed maize seedlings (Zea mays L.). The growth inhibition by PSNPs stress was partially relieved by Nano-TiO2. Furthermore, when considering the outcomes obtained from RNA-seq, enzyme activity, and metabolite content analyses, it becomes evident that Nano-TiO2 significantly enhance carbon and nitrogen metabolism levels in plants. In comparison to plants that were not subjected to Nano-TiO2, plants exposed to Nano-TiO2 exhibited enhanced capabilities in maintaining higher rates of photosynthesis, sucrose synthesis, nitrogen assimilation, and protein synthesis under stressful conditions. Meanwhile, Nano-TiO2 alleviated the oxidative damage by modulating the antioxidant systems. Interestingly, we also found that Nano-TiO2 significantly enhanced the endogenous melatonin levels in maize seedlings. P-chlorophenylalanine (p-CPA, a melatonin synthesis inhibitor) declined Nano-TiO2-induced PSNPs tolerance. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, our data show that melatonin is involved in Nano-TiO2-induced growth promotion in maize through the regulation of carbon and nitrogen metabolism.

The widespread utilization of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) has caused a variety of environmental and health problems. Compared with traditional thermomechanical or chemical PET cycling, the biodegradation of PET may offer a more feasible solution. Though the PETase from Ideonalla sakaiensis (IsPETase) displays interesting PET degrading performance under mild conditions; the relatively low thermal stability of IsPETase limits its practical application. In this study, enzyme-catalysed PET degradation was investigated with the promising IsPETase mutant HotPETase (HP). On this basis, a carbohydrate-binding module from Bacillus anthracis (BaCBM) was fused to the C-terminus of HP to construct the PETase mutant (HLCB) for increased PET degradation. Furthermore, to effectively improve PET accessibility and PET-degrading activity, the truncated outer membrane hybrid protein (FadL) was used to expose PETase and BaCBM on the surface of E. coli (BL21with) to develop regenerable whole-cell biocatalysts (D-HLCB). Results showed that, among the tested small-molecular weight ester compounds (p-nitrophenyl phosphate (pNPP), p-Nitrophenyl acetate (pNPA), 4-Nitrophenyl butyrate (pNPB)), PETase displayed the highest hydrolysing activity against pNPP. HP displayed the highest catalytic activity (1.94 µM(p-NP)/min) at 50 °C and increased longevity at 40 °C. The fused BaCBM could clearly improve the catalytic performance of PETase by increasing the optimal reaction temperature and improving the thermostability. When HLCB was used for PET degradation, the yield of monomeric products (255.7 µM) was ∼25.5 % greater than that obtained after 50 h of HP-catalysed PET degradation. Moreover, the highest yield of monomeric products from the D-HLCB-mediated system reached 1.03 mM. The whole-cell catalyst D-HLCB displayed good reusability and stability and could maintain more than 54.6 % of its initial activity for nine cycles. Finally, molecular docking simulations were utilized to investigate the binding mechanism and the reaction mechanism of HLCB, which may provide theoretical evidence to further increase the PET-degrading activities of PETases through rational design. The proposed strategy and developed variants show potential for achieving complete biodegradation of PET under mild conditions.

Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) is closely correlated with tumorigenesis and progression. Establishing a low-cost, simple, rapid, and sensitive method for its detection is highly desired for the broad-spectrum screening of oral cancer. Herein, we combine the MMP-specific cleavage ability with magnetic separation technology and a commercial test strip to construct a sensitive biosensor to detect MMP-1 conveniently for the first time. The method involves two DNA probes, peptide-DNA1 and hCG-DNA2, where DNA1 and DNA2 are complementary sequences, and the peptide labeled with biotin can bind streptavidin-modified magnetic nanoparticles stably. The human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is the target of the pregnancy test strip. The cleavage reaction mediated by MMP-1 releases peptide-DNA1 and the hybridized hCG-DNA2 into the solution, and the hCG probe in the solution can develop color on the test strip for the determination of MMP-1 after magnetic separation. This method utilizes the high specificity of MMP-1's proteolytic cleavage and the high sensitivity of the test strip to the target probe, achieving a sensitive detection of MMP-1 with a visual detection limit of 65.5 pg/mL. The method shows better anti-interference and sensitivity than the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in the application of a biological sample matrix, suggesting its great potential for clinical diagnosis, especially for broad-spectrum oral cancer screening.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pulmonary complications are common. Aging and respiratory disease provoke airway hyperresponsiveness, high-risk surgery induces diaphragmatic dysfunction, and general anesthesia contributes to atelectasis and peripheral airway injury. This study therefore tested the hypothesis that inhalation of penehyclidine, a long-acting muscarinic antagonist, reduces the incidence of pulmonary complications in high-risk patients over the initial 30 postoperative days. METHODS: This single-center double-blind trial enrolled 864 patients age over 50 yr who were scheduled for major upper-abdominal or noncardiac thoracic surgery lasting 2 h or more and who had an Assess Respiratory Risk in Surgical Patients in Catalonia score of 45 or higher. The patients were randomly assigned to placebo or prophylactic penehyclidine inhalation from the night before surgery through postoperative day 2 at 12-h intervals. The primary outcome was the incidence of a composite of pulmonary complications within 30 postoperative days, including respiratory infection, respiratory failure, pleural effusion, atelectasis, pneumothorax, bronchospasm, and aspiration pneumonitis. RESULTS: A total of 826 patients (mean age, 64 yr; 63% male) were included in the intention-to-treat analysis. A composite of pulmonary complications was less common in patients assigned to penehyclidine (18.9% [79 of 417]) than those receiving the placebo (26.4% [108 of 409]; relative risk, 0.72; 95% CI, 0.56 to 0.93; P = 0.010; number needed to treat, 13). Bronchospasm was less common in penehyclidine than placebo patients: 1.4% (6 of 417) versus 4.4% (18 of 409; relative risk, 0.327; 95% CI, 0.131 to 0.82; P = 0.011). None of the other individual pulmonary complications differed significantly. Peak airway pressures greater than 40 cm H2O were also less common in patients given penehyclidine: 1.9% (8 of 432) versus 4.9% (21 of 432; relative risk, 0.381; 95% CI, 0.171 to 0.85; P = 0.014). The incidence of other adverse events, including dry mouth and delirium, that were potentially related to penehyclidine inhalation did not differ between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: In high-risk patients having major upper-abdominal or noncardiac thoracic surgery, prophylactic penehyclidine inhalation reduced the incidence of pulmonary complications without provoking complications.

Antioxidant system is crucial for protecting against environmental oxidative stress in fish life cycle. Although the effects of starvation on the antioxidant defenses in several adult fish have been defined, no relevant researches have been reported in the larval stage, particularly during the transition from endogenous to exogenous feeding. To clarify the molecular response of antioxidant system that occurs during the mouth-opening stage under starvation stress and explore its association with energy metabolism, we employed RNA-seq to analyze the gene expression profiles in zebrafish larvae that received a delayed first feeding for 3 days. Our data showed that delayed feeding resulted in downregulation of 7078 genes and upregulation of 497 genes. These differentially expressed genes are mainly involved in growth regulation (i.e., DNA replication and cell cycle), energy metabolism (i.e., glycolysis/gluconeogenesis and fatty acid metabolism), and antioxidant defenses. We demonstrated that the starved larvae are in an extremely malnourished state in the absence of exogenous nutrition, and the consequence is that numerous antioxidant genes are downregulated. Meanwhile, the antioxidant defenses also respond negatively to oxidative stress. After nutritional supply, the expression of these inhibited antioxidant genes was restored. These results suggest that the establishment of antioxidant defenses during the mouth-opening stage depends highly on exogenous nutrition. Our findings would contribute to comprehending the nutritional stress and metabolic switches during the mouth-opening stage and are essential for reducing high mortality in commercial fish farming.

Cyclosporine-A (CsA) is a widely used immunosuppressant. In this study, we explore the pathway through which CsA suppressed the Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide (P.g-LPS)-induced increase in matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activities in co-cultured human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) and THP-1 monocytes. In the co-culture, we found that CsA inhibited the expression of cyclophilin A (CyPA), CD147 and the activities of MMPs, which were all induced by P.g-LPS. We also found that P.g-LPS and recombinant human CyPA increased activation of ERK1/2 and IκB (an NF-κB inhibitory protein), but CsA and the anti-CD147 antibody significantly inhibited these effects. Taken together, CsA in the presence of P.g-LPS might suppress MMP activities by blocking the CyPA/CD147 interaction that results in the inhibition of ERK1/2 and NF-κB signaling by interfering with the phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and IκB.

The effects of several surfactants on the biosynthesis of ß-1,3-D-glucan (ß-glucan) and pullulan by Aureobasidium pullulans CCTCC M 2012259 were investigated, and Triton X-100 was found to decrease biomass formation but increase ß-glucan and pullulan production. The addition of 5 g/L Triton X-100 to the fermentation medium and bioconversion broth significantly increased ß-glucan production by 76.6% and 69.9%, respectively, when compared to the control without surfactant addition. To reveal the physiological mechanism underlying the effect of Triton X-100 on polysaccharides production, the cell morphology and viability, membrane permeability, key enzyme activities, and intracellular levels of UDPG, NADH, and ATP were determined. The results indicated that Triton X-100 increased the activities of key enzymes involved in ß-glucan and pullulan biosynthesis, improved intracellular UDPG and energy supply, and accelerated the transportation rate of precursors across the cell membrane, all of which contributed to the enhanced production of ß-glucan and pullulan. Moreover, a two-stage culture strategy with combined processes of batch fermentation and bioconversion was applied, and co-production of ß-glucan and pullulan in the presence of 5 g/L Triton X-100 additions was further improved. The present study not only provides insights into the effect of surfactant on ß-glucan and pullulan production but also presents a feasible approach for efficient production of analogue exopolysaccharides. KEY POINTS: • Triton X-100 increased ß-glucan and pullulan production under either batch fermentation or bioconversion. • Triton X-100 increased the permeability of cell membrane and accelerated the transportation rate of precursors across cell membrane. • Activities of key enzymes involved in ß-glucan and pullulan biosynthesis were increased in the presence of Triton X-100. • Intracellular UDPG levels and energy supply were improved by Triton X-100 addition.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) are increasingly used in sunscreens, food additives, pigments, rubber manufacture, and electronic materials. Several studies have shown that ZnO-NPs inhibit cell growth and induce apoptosis by the production of oxidative stress in a variety of human cancer cells. However, the anti-cancer property and molecular mechanism of ZnO-NPs in human gingival squamous cell carcinoma (GSCC) are not fully understood. In this study, we found that ZnO-NPs induced growth inhibition of GSCC (Ca9-22 and OECM-1 cells), but no damage in human normal keratinocytes (HaCaT cells) and gingival fibroblasts (HGF-1 cells). ZnO-NPs caused apoptotic cell death of GSCC in a concentration-dependent manner by the quantitative assessment of oligonucleosomal DNA fragmentation. Flow cytometric analysis of cell cycle progression revealed that sub-G1 phase accumulation was dramatically induced by ZnO-NPs. In addition, ZnO-NPs increased the intracellular reactive oxygen species and specifically superoxide levels, and also decreased the mitochondrial membrane potential. ZnO-NPs further activated apoptotic cell death via the caspase cascades. Importantly, anti-oxidant and caspase inhibitor clearly prevented ZnO-NP-induced cell death, indicating the fact that superoxide-induced mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with the ZnO-NP-mediated caspase-dependent apoptosis in human GSCC. Moreover, ZnO-NPs significantly inhibited the phosphorylation of ribosomal protein S6 kinase (p70S6K kinase). In a corollary in vivo study, our results demonstrated that ZnO-NPs possessed an anti-cancer effect in a zebrafish xenograft model. Collectively, these results suggest that ZnO-NPs induce apoptosis through the mitochondrial oxidative damage and p70S6K signaling pathway in human GSCC. The present study may provide an experimental basis for ZnO-NPs to be considered as a promising novel anti­tumor agent for the treatment of gingival cancer.

Periodontitis, an oral inflammatory disease caused by periodontal pathogen infection, is the most prevalent chronic inflammatory disease and a major burden on healthcare. The TAM receptor tyrosine kinases (Tyro3, Axl and Mertk) and their ligands (Gas6 and Pros1) play a pivotal role in the resolution of inflammation and have been associated with chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. In this study, we evaluated the effects of exogenous Pros1 in in vitro and in vivo models of periodontitis. We detected higher Pros1 but lower Tyro3 levels in inflamed gingival specimens of periodontitis patients compared with healthy controls. Moreover, Pros1 was mostly localized in the gingival epithelium of all specimens. In cultured human gingival epithelial cells (hGECs), Porphyromonas gingivalis LPS (p.g-LPS) stimulation down-regulated Pros1 and Tyro3. Exogenous Pros1 inhibited p.g-LPS-induced production of TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1ß, MMP9/2 and RANKL in a Tyro3-dependent manner as revealed by PCR, Western blot analysis, ELISA and gelatin zymography. Pros1 also restored Tyro3 expression down-regulated by p.g-LPS in hGECs. In rats treated with ligature and p.g-LPS, administration of Pros1 attenuated periodontitis-associated gingival inflammation and alveolar bone loss. Our mechanistic studies implicated SOCS1/3 and STAT1/3 as mediators of the in vitro and in vivo anti-inflammatory effects of Pros1. Collectively, the findings from this work supported Pros1 as a novel anti-inflammatory therapy for periodontitis.

To investigate the preparation technology and release mechanism of tectorigenin intragastric floating sustained-release tablets. The tablet was produced by wet granulation compression method, with hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMCK15M), cross-linked polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVPP), octadecanol and sodium bicarbonate as excipient. The prescriptions were screened and optimized by orthogonal experimental design with in vitro floating capacity and drug release characteristics as the evaluation indexes. The optimization results were as follows: tectorigenin 33.3%, HPMCK15M 16.7%, PVPP 20.0%, octadecanol 13.3%, sodium bicarbonate 5%, and starch gel 10.7%. The prepared tablet can be floated within 10 s in the artificial gastric juice, lasting for 12 h in vitro, with a cumulative release rate of 70% in 10 h. The analysis of Rritger-Peppas equation showed that the sustained-release tablet had two advantages of both drug diffusion and skeleton dissolution. The tablet had good appearance and compressibility, as well as favorable floating capacity and drug release characteristics.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the immediate bond strength and surface structure of resin and the tooth enamel which treated by cold plasma. METHODS: In the study, 40 bovine incisors were divided into two equal parts. In this sense, all enamel adhesive samples were prepared and then randomly divided into 4 groups (n =20). group 1: acid + single bond 2+resin composite (control group); group 2:beyond bleaching+ acid+single bond 2+resin composite; group 3: treated by cold plasma for 5 minutes+ acid+single bond 2+resin composite; group 4: treated by cold plasma for 5 minutes+single bond 2+resin composite. Single bond 2 bonding system and Filtek Z250 resin were used in this experiment. The shear bond strength was tested by universal testing machine. The surface of the enamel in different processes was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Statistical analyses by the single factor analysis of variance and multiple pairwise comparisons were performed with SPSS 17.0 . RESULTS: The shear bond strength of group 4 (8.60 MPa) was significantly lower than that of the other three groups (P<0.05). The shear bond strength of group 2 (17.89 MPa) was higher than that of group 4, but lower than group 1 and group 3 (P<0.05).There was no significant difference between group 1 (34.82 MPa) and group 3 (34.69 MPa). Scanning electron microscope indicated that the enamel treated by cold plasma had slight molten form, which was different from etched enamel surface.The fractured surface of group 3 was mix fracture, which was similar to the control group (group 1). CONCLUSION: Compared with the conventional clinic bleaching, immediate bond strength of resin-enamel that treated by cold plasma has not been affected.

Mercury is a major threat to the environment and to human health. It is highly desirable to develop a user-friendly kit for on-site mercury detection. Such a method must be able to detect mercury below the threshold levels (10 nM) for drinking water defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Herein, we for the first time reported catalytically active gold amalgam-based reaction between 4-nitrophenol and NaBH4 with colorimetric sensing function. We take advantage of the correlation between the catalytic properties and the surface area of gold amalgam, which is proportional to the amount of the gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-bound Hg(2+). As the concentration of Hg(2+) increases until the saturation of Hg onto the AuNPs, the catalytic performance of the gold amalgam is much stronger due to the formation of gold amalgam and the increase of the nanoparticle surface area, leading to the decrease of the reduction time of 4-nitrophenol for the color change. This sensing system exhibits excellent selectivity and ultrahigh sensitivity up to the 1.45 nM detection limit. The practical use of this system for Hg(2+) determination in tap water samples is also demonstrated successfully.

To develop an ophthalmic preparation of Shedan, an in situ forming gel was prepared with the formulation containing 18% of poloxamer 407 and 5% of poloxamer 188 by response surface designs plus central composite designs. The rheology results showed that LVE range gamma should limited within 0.5%, Shedan high-frequency region, and the thixotropy recovery time is less than 5 seconds. The phase transition temperature was 33.25 °C according to curve of storage modulus and loss modulus determined by temperature scanning. Surface tension and osmometer of it determined by surface tension meter and dew point osmometer were 36.43 mN · m(-1), and 320.6 mOsm · kg(-1), respectively. Fluorescein sodium was selected as the marker to monitor the corneal residence time, and the results showed that Shedan gel could prolong drug residence for 180 min. In line with zero-order kinetics, releases of muscone and salvianolic acid B in vitro depends on gels erosion. The results of rabbit ocular irritation experiments suggested that Shedan in situ forming gel was biocompatible and nonirritant. In conclusion, a novel Shedan in situ forming gel was developed and characterized for potential drug treatment of retinal vein occlusion.

BACKGROUND: Bacteria affect oral health, but few studies have systematically examined the role of bacterial communities in oral diseases. We examined this relationship in a large population-based Chinese cancer screening cohort. METHODS: Human Oral Microbe Identification Microarrays were used to test for the presence of 272 human oral bacterial species (97 genera) in upper digestive tract (UDT) samples collected from 659 participants. Oral health was assessed using US NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) protocols. We assessed both dental health (total teeth missing; tooth decay; and the decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) score) and periodontal health (bleeding on probing (BoP) extent score, loss of attachment extent score, and a periodontitis summary estimate). RESULTS: Microbial richness, estimated by number of genera per sample, was positively correlated with BoP score (P = 0.015), but negatively correlated with tooth decay and DMFT score (P = 0.008 and 0.022 respectively). Regarding ß-diversity, as estimated by the UniFrac distance matrix for pairwise differences among samples, at least one of the first three principal components of the UniFrac distance matrix was correlated with the number of missing teeth, tooth decay, DMFT, BoP, or periodontitis. Of the examined genera, Parvimonas was positively associated with BoP and periodontitis. Veillonellacease [G-1] was associated with a high DMFT score, and Filifactor and Peptostreptococcus were associated with a low DMFT score. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest distinct relationships between UDT microbiota and dental and periodontal health. Poor dental health was associated with a less microbial diversity, whereas poor periodontal health was associated with more diversity and the presence of potentially pathogenic species.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of Clinpro XT Varnish (VXT) paste-liquid, resin-modified glass-ionomer and the resinous dentin desensitizing varnish and Gluma Dentin Desensitizer (Gluma) in treating dentin hypersensitivity (DH). METHODS: This short-term (4-week) randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, split-mouth study included a total of 119 teeth from 31 individuals which were randomized into three groups: VXT, Gluma, and placebo (warm water). Dentin sensitivity was evaluated by subjects' perception of DH determined by pretreatment tooth sensitivity score (TSS) measured on a 0-10 visual analogue scale (VAS) after tactile (probe) or thermal/evaporative (blast of air) stimuli. TSS was scored at baseline, immediately after treatment (Day 0), after 1 week and after 4 weeks. RESULTS: For both stimuli, mean TSS was significantly decreased in the VXT and Gluma groups at all time points (all, P < 0.001) compared with baseline. Regarding comparisons of TSS between treatment groups, the VXT group had significantly lower mean TSS compared with the Gluma group (P< 0.05) and placebo control group (P< 0.05) at all time points after treatment regardless of stimuli. Group Effect, Time Effect, and Group x Time Effect were all significantly different (all, P < 0.001).

BACKGROUND: Sjögren's syndrome can involve the central nervous system; however, spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage has rarely been reported as the initial manifestation. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 39-year-old woman with primary Sjögren's syndrome presenting with intracranial hemorrhage. The diagnosis of primary Sjögren's syndrome was based on the presence of ocular dryness, salivary gland secretory and excretory dysfunction confirmed with dynamic tracer emission CT, and positive anti-Sjögren's syndrome A and anti-Sjögren's syndrome B antibodies. CONCLUSION: Primary Sjögren's syndrome can present with variable central nervous system signs, which may precede the classic sicca symptoms. Therefore, Sjögren's syndrome-associated indicators should be investigated in patients without the common risk factors for stroke who present with spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a simulated porcelain firing process on the surface, corrosion behavior and cell culture response of two nickel-chromium (Ni-Cr) dental alloys. A Be-free alloy and a Be-containing alloy were tested. Before porcelain firing, as-cast specimens were examined for surface composition using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and metallurgical phases using X-ray diffraction. Corrosion behaviors were evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. 3T3 fibroblasts were cultured and exposed indirectly to specimens. MTT assays were counted after 3 and 6 days. The cell culture mediums exposed to specimens were analyzed for metal ion release. After porcelain firing, similar specimens were examined for the same properties. In both as-cast and fired conditions, the Be-free Ni-Cr alloy showed significantly more resistance to corrosion than the Be-containing Ni-Cr alloy, which exhibited BeNi phase. After porcelain firing, the corrosion resistance of the Be-free Ni-Cr alloy decreased statistically, corresponding with evident decreases of Cr and Ni oxides on the alloy surface. Also, the alloy's MTT assay decreased significantly corresponding with an obvious increase of Ni-ion release after the firing. For the Be-containing Ni-Cr alloy, the firing process led to increases of surface oxides and metallic Be, while its corrosion resistance and cell culture response were not significantly changed after porcelain firing. The results suggested that the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of the Be-free Ni-Cr alloy decreased after porcelain firing, whereas the firing process had little effect on the same properties of the Be-containing Ni-Cr alloy.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the pain sensation recovery discipline of 2 mm small gap biological conduit tubulization and epineurial neurorrhaphy in rat sciatic nerve multilation model. METHODS: Based on the rat sciatic nerve multilation model, 2 mm small gap biological conduit tubulization and epineurial neurorrhaphy were applied and the 50% paw withdrawal threshold was observed after 2, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 12 weeks. The data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and chi-square criterion. RESULTS: Obvious hyperalgesia was observed in week 2 in both experimental group and control group, and 50% paw withdrawal threshold was improved significantly even to 15 g. The 50% paw withdrawal threshold began to decline week 4 and the 50% paw withdrawal threshold of small gap tubulization group was obviously lower than that of control group, which may imply that the pain sensation recovery of small gap tubulization group was earlier than that of control group. The 50% paw withdrawal threshold of small gap tubulization group began to increase to the plateau period [week 5: (12.70 ± 5.64) g; week 6: (12.20 ± 3.26) g; week 8: (12.31 ± 4.19) g; week 12: (13.95 ± 2.58) g]. The 50% paw withdrawal threshold of control group declined gradually [week 5: (10.47 ± 7.02) g; week 6: (9.42 ± 6.86) g; week 8: (8.50 ± 7.15) g; week 12: (8.06 ± 5.93) g]. The difference was statistical significant between small gap tubulization group and control group in 12th week. CONCLUSION: Compared with the traditional epineurial neurorrhaphy for peripheral nerve multilation, 2 mm small gap biological conduit tubulization can improve the 50% paw withdrawal threshold during peripheral nerve regeneration process and reduce the pain incidence.

Two solution-processable platinum-acetylide polymers functionalized with the electron-deficient thiazolothiazole spacer are synthesized and show absorption features spanning from 320 to 600 nm and optical bandgaps of 2.15 and 2.05 eV. The spin-coated polymer thin films of both materials exhibit p-channel field-effect charge transport characteristics with impressive peak field-effect charge-carrier mobilities of (2.1-2.8) × 10(-2) cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) and on/off ratios of (0.8-1.0) × 10(5) for the holes. The high hole mobility value reported for one of the polymers is among the highest reported for metallopolyynes to date. It is also shown that the hole mobility can be notably increased by extending the conjugation length of the chain from the monothienyl to the bithienyl segment on each side of the thiazolothiazole ring.

The effect of occlusion on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is debated. By inserting rubber-bands that were replaced by self-curing resin one week later, the left maxillary and the right mandibular first-molars were moved and kept mesially in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats in both experimental I (EXP-I) and II (EXP-II) groups, aiming to establish a non-matching cusp-to-fossa occlusal relation. Four weeks later, the left maxillary and the right mandibular third-molars were moved and kept distally in the EXP-II group. Degenerative changes, typically as a cell-free area, were observed in TMJs of the EXP groups. Binary logistical analysis indicated that the odds ratio of EXP group, EXP-II vs. EXP-I, on the incidence of a cell-free area, was 2.8 (p=.036). Time point, gender, and side did not have such effects (p>0.05). The results indicate that the persistence of more scattered non-matching cusp-to-fossa occlusion is more harmful to the condylar cartilage in terms of the incidence of degenerative changes.
