BACKGROUND: Although ultrasonography (US) has been widely used in the diagnosis of human diseases to monitor the progress of cystic echinococcosis (CE) control, the screening method for hepatic CE in sheep flocks requires adjustment. In this study, we used a US scanner to screen sheep flocks and evaluated the efficacy of dosing dogs once a year with praziquantel for 7 years from 2014 to 2021. METHODS: All sheep in the three flocks were screened using an ultrasound scanner in 2014 and compared with the prevalence of infection in 2021 in Bayinbuluke, Xinjiang, China. Sheep age was determined using incisor teeth. Cyst activity and calcification were determined using US images. The dogs were dewormed with praziquantel once a year to control echinococcosis in the community. RESULTS: Three flocks had 968 sheep in 2014, with 13.22%, 22.62%, 18.7%, 27.27%, 11.88%, and 6.3% of sheep aged 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and ≥ 6 years old, respectively. US scanning revealed that the overall CE prevalence was 38.43% (372/968), with active cysts and calcified cysts present in 9.40% (91/968) and 29.02% (281/968) of the sheep, respectively. For the young sheep aged 1 and 2 years, the prevalence of active and calcified cysts was: 1.56% and 0.91%, and 10.94% and 18.72%, respectively. Approximately 15.15% and 16.52% of the 4- and 5-year-old sheep, respectively, harbored active cysts. There was no significant difference in the infection rates of sheep between 2014 and 2021 (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: US is a practical tool for the field screening of CE in sheep flocks. One-third of the sheep population in the flocks was 1-2 years old, and these sheep played a very limited role in CE transmission, as most of the cysts were calcified. Old sheep, especially culled aged sheep, play a key role in the transmission of CE. Dosing dogs once a year did not affect echinococcosis control.

BACKGROUND: The development of deep learning (DL) algorithms for use in dentistry is an emerging trend. Periodontitis is one of the most prevalent oral diseases, which has a notable impact on the life quality of patients. Therefore, it is crucial to classify periodontitis accurately and efficiently. This systematic review aimed to identify the application of DL for the classification of periodontitis and assess the accuracy of this approach. METHODS: A literature search up to November 2023 was implemented through EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were used to screen eligible studies, and the quality of the studies was evaluated by the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) methodology with the QUADAS-2 (Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies) tool. Random-effects inverse-variance model was used to perform the meta-analysis of a diagnostic test, with which pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio (LR), negative LR, and diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) were calculated, and a summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) plot was constructed. RESULTS: Thirteen studies were included in the meta-analysis. After excluding an outlier, the pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive LR, negative LR and DOR were 0.88 (95%CI 0.82-0.92), 0.82 (95%CI 0.72-0.89), 4.9 (95%CI 3.2-7.5), 0.15 (95%CI 0.10-0.22) and 33 (95%CI 19-59), respectively. The area under the SROC was 0.92 (95%CI 0.89-0.94). CONCLUSIONS: The accuracy of DL-based classification of periodontitis is high, and this approach could be employed in the future to reduce the workload of dental professionals and enhance the consistency of classification.

INTRODUCTION: To analyze the stress distribution of the all-ceramic endocrown with different base materials and thicknesses using three-dimensional finite element analysis. METHODS: A endodontically treated maxillary premolar was scanned by micro-CT, a three-dimensional finite element model of the endocrown with fluid resin as the base material was divided into control (0 mm), 1 mm, 2 mm, and 3 mm groups according to base thickness. Three kinds of conventional base materials were used and divided into glass ion group (A), fluid resin group (B), and nanocomposite resin group (C), and a three-dimensional finite element model of the endocrown with 1.0 mm thickness of base was established. A static loading with axial and 45° direction was applied to each model, the stress distribution of each part of the endocrown was analyzed under different base materials and thicknesses. RESULTS: The different thickness of the base layer has an influence on the components of the restoration and the tooth. The stress in the control group was the largest. The stress was the lowest when the thickness of the base layer was 1 mm; The maximum of the equivalent stress, the first, second, and third principal stress in the endocrown, abutment, and alveolar bone, are basically the same with the different base materials. The stress on the base layer increases with the elastic modulus of base materials increases. CONCLUSIONS: The base layer played a force buffering effect on the dental body restored with endocrowns, and the effect was the best at 1 mm; The selection of base material has little influence on the whole, but in order to protect the weak tissues of the cavity bottom, the base material with lower elastic modulus can be used.

RESUMO

Since being discovered in 2008, the STING (stimulator of interferon genes) pathway has gradually been recognized as a central and promising target for immunotherapy. The STING pathway can be stimulated by cyclic dinucleotides (CDNs), leading to the type I interferons (IFN) production for immunotherapy for cancer or other diseases. However, the negative charges, hydrophilicity, and instability of CDNs have hindered their further applications. In addition, chronic activation of the STING pathway has been found to be involved in autoimmune diseases as IFN overproduction. Thus, research and development of STING agonists and inhibitors has been a hot field for the treatment of several diseases. The past several years, especially 2018, has seen increasingly rapid advances in this field. Here, this review summarizes the synthesis and modification of CDNs, the identification of nonnucleotide agonists, the recent progress in delivery systems and the medical applications, such as personalized vaccine adjuvants, in detail. In addition, in this review, we summarize the STING inhibitors' advances from two aspects, covalent, and noncovalent inhibitors.

As a cell-penetrating peptide, polyarginine is widely used in drug delivery systems based on its membrane permeation ability. Previously, we developed the mPEG-PLA-b-polyarginine(R15) triblock copolymer, which exhibited a high siRNA delivery efficiency both in vitro and in vivo. As a continued effort, here the amphiphilic diblock polymer PCL-R15 was synthesized as a simplified model to further elucidate the structure-activity relationship of arginine-based amphiphilic polymers as siRNA delivery systems, and the cellular trafficking mechanisms of the PCL-R15/siRNA nanoplexes were investigated to understand the interaction patterns between the nanoplexes and cells. Compared to the R15/siRNA complexes, the introduction of PCL moiety was found to result in the stronger interactions with cells and the enhanced transfection efficiency after the formation of condensed nanoplexes. Caveolae-mediated endocytosis and clathrin-mediated endocytosis were major routes for the internalization of PCL-R15/siRNA nanoplexes. The intracellular release of siRNA from nanoplexes was confirmed by fluorescence resonance energy transfer assay. It was also noticed that the internalized PCL-R15/siRNA nanoplexes were transported through digestive routes and trapped in lysosomes, which may be the bottleneck for efficient siRNA delivery of PCL-R15/siRNA nanoplexes. This study investigated the relationship between the polymer structure of PCL-R15 and the cellular interaction patterns, which may render implications on the rational design of polyarginine-based siRNA delivery systems.

The behaviour of drug/gene carriers in the blood stream under shear is still a puzzle. In this work, using the complexes formed by 21 bp DNA and poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(l-lysine) (PEG-PLL) of varying PEG lengths, we studied the dynamic behaviour of the complexes in the presence of fetal bovine serum (FBS) and under flow at different shear rates, a condition mimicking the internal physical environment of blood vessels. The PEG5k-PLL/DNA complex possesses a dense DNA/PLL core and a loose PEG5k protecting layer. The PEGylated DNA complexes exhibit multiple responses to external shear in the presence of FBS. The loose PEG5k layer is firstly disturbed at a shear rate below 30 s-1. The exposure of the charged core to the environment results in a secondary aggregation of the complex with FBS. The size of the aggregate is limited to a certain range as the shear rate increases to 50 s-1. The dense DNA/PLL core starts to withstand the shear force as the shear rate reaches 500 s-1. The reorganization of the core to accommodate more serum molecules leads to tertiary aggregation of the complexes. If PEG cannot form a valid layer around the complex, as in PEG2k-PLL/DNA, the complex forms an aggregate even without shear, and the first shear dependent region is missing. If the PEG layer is too stable around the complex, as in PEG10k-PLL/DNA, no tertiary aggregation occurs. The mechanism of shear on the behaviour of delivery particles in serum helps to design gene carriers with high efficacy.

Huntington's disease (HD) is classified as a protein-misfolding disease correlated with the mutant Huntingtin (mHtt) protein with abnormally expanded polyglutamine (polyQ) domains. Because no effective drugs have yet been reported, attempts to develop better therapy to delay the age of onset are in urgent demand. In this study, an amphiphilic peptide consisting of negatively charged hexaglutamic acid and a stretch of decaglutamine (E6 Q10 ) was chemically synthesized as an inhibitor against polyQ and mHtt toxicity. It is found that E6 Q10 selfassembles into spherical vesicles, as shown by means of TEM, cryoelectron microscopy, and dynamic light scattering. Assembled E6 Q10 prevented the polyQ-rich peptide (KKWQ20 AKK) from forming amyloid fibrils. To enable the cell-penetration ability of E6 Q10 , the E6 Q10 ⋅chitosan complex was generated. It is demonstrated that the complex penetrates cells, interferes with the mHtt oligomerization and aggregation process, and prevents mHtt cytotoxicity. By combining positively charged chitosan and amphiphilic peptides with a negatively charge moiety, a new strategy is provided to develop biocompatible and biodegradable inhibitors against mHtt toxicity.

Collagen is one of the most useful biomaterials and widely applied in functional food and cosmetics. However, some consumers have paid close attention to the safety of mammalian collagens because of the outbreaks of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), and other prion diseases. Therefore, there is a strong demand for developing alternative sources of collagen, with one promising source being from the process by-products of commercial fisheries. In this report, acid-soluble collagen (ASC-SB) and pepsin-soluble collagen (PSC-SB) from swim bladders of miiuy croaker (Miichthys miiuy) were isolated with yields of 1.33 ± 0.11% and 8.37 ± 0.24% of dry swim bladder weight. Glycine was the major amino acid present, with a content of 320.5 (ASC-SB) and 333.6 residues/1000 residues (PSC-SB). ASC-SB and PSC-SB had much lower denaturation temperatures compared to mammalian collagen, a consequence of low imino acid contents (196.7 and 199.5 residues/1000 residues for ASC-SB and PSC-SB, respectively). The data of amino acid composition, SDS-PAGE pattern, UV and FTIR spectra confirmed that ASC-SB and PSC-SB were mainly composed of type I collagen. FTIR spectra data indicated there were more hydrogen bonding and intermolecular crosslinks in ASC-SB. These collagens showed high solubility in the acidic pH ranges and low NaCl concentrations (less than 2%). The Zeta potential values of ASC-SB and PSC-SB were 6.74 and 6.85, respectively. ASC-SB and PSC-SB presented irregular, dense, sheet-like films linked by random-coiled filaments under scanning electron microscopy. In addition, ASC-SB and PSC-SB could scavenge DPPH radical, hydroxyl radical, superoxide anion radical, and ABTS radical in a dose-dependent manner. Overall, the results indicate that collagens from the swim bladders of miiuy croaker are a viable substitute for mammalian collagen, with potential functional food and cosmeceutical applications.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the predictive value of baseline HBsAg level and early response for HBsAg loss in patients with HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis B during pegylated interferon alpha-2a treatment. METHODS: A total of 121 patients with HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis B who achieved HBsAg loss were enrolled; all patients were treated with PEG-IFNα-2a 180 µg/week. Serum HBV DNA and serological indicators (HBsAg, anti-HBs, HBeAg, and anti-HBe) were determined before and every 3 months during treatment. RESULTS: The median treatment time for HBsAg loss was 84 weeks (7-273 weeks), and 74.38% (90 cases) of the patients needed extended treatment (> 48 weeks). The correlation between baseline HBsAg levels and the treatment time of HBsAg loss was significant (B = 14.465, t = 2.342, P = 0.021). Baseline HBsAg levels together with the decline range of HBsAg at 24 weeks significantly correlated with the treatment time of HBsAg loss (B = 29.862, t = 4.890, P = 0.000 and B = 27.993, t = 27.993, P = 0.005). CONCLUSION: Baseline HBsAg levels and extended therapy are critical steps toward HBsAg loss. Baseline HBsAg levels together with early response determined the treatment time of HBsAg loss in patients with HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis B during pegylated interferon alpha-2a treatment.

Kanamycin A, an amino modified sugar, can interact with poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(glutamate sodium) (PEG114-PGlu64) via electrostatic interactions (with PGlu) and hydrogen bonding (with PEG). The interplay of these two forces determines the assembly process and the resulting structure. In deionized water, kanamycin A and PEG114-PGlu64 form a spherical structure at [+]/[-] = 3.5. This structure dissociates instantly and completely in the presence of 30 mM NaCl. However, a new structure is reassembled in about 2 hours. A similar phenomenon is observed when the buffer pH is increased from 7.8 to 8.3. We attribute the distinct dissociation/reassembly process to the reestablishment of the balance between electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding. The dissociation/reassembly process in response to environmental changes offers a novel approach to release the loaded cargo in a controlled manner.

Polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) are of great importance in drug delivery and gene therapy. The density and the distribution of the charges are key parameters of a polyelectrolyte, determining the structure of the complex and the kinetics of the complexation. Using peptides of precisely-controlled charge density as model molecules, we showed that the presence of weakly-charged peptides, (KGGG)5 or (KGKG)5, did not affect the complexation of highly-charged peptides (KKKK)5 with 21 bp oligonucleotides. However, peptide containing blocks of different charge densities, such as (KKKK)5-b-(KGGG)5 or (KKKK)5-b-(KGKG)5, exhibited superior performance during complexation. With a relatively uniform small size, the complex was also stable in serum. More importantly, the cellular uptake of the complex was greatly enhanced by a ratio of 40-60%, compared to that of the complex formed by uniformly-charged peptides. We attributed the improvement to the structure of the complex, in which the highly-charged blocks form the core with the oligonucleotide whilst the weakly-charged blocks dangle outside, preventing the complexes from further aggregation.

We aim to investigate the efficiency of liposomal albendazole (L-ABZ) for the treatment of complex alveolar echinococcosis (CAE) using contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS), computed tomography (CT), and positron emission tomography (PET)/CT. Twelve patients with CAE admitted to our hospital between June 2000 and June 2011 were included in this retrospective study. CEUS, CT, and PET/CT were used to evaluate the clinical efficiency of L-ABZ for these patients. Effectiveness was defined as significant response after chemotherapy. Effectiveness with clinical significance was defined as complete response after chemotherapy, and non-effectiveness was defined as no response after chemotherapy. Patients were followed up for 3-11 years. Ten patients (83.3%) had a ratio of averaged gray scale in the enhanced band to that of hepatic tissues of ≤1.1, and six patients (50.0%) had a ratio of ≤0.9 as revealed by CEUS. CT scanning results indicated an effective rate of 91.6%. PET/CT indicated a maximal standard uptake (SUVmax) of <2.5 in nine patients (75.0%), which was considered to be effective. A high uptake of fluorodeoxyglucose was observed in three patients (25.0%) with SUVmax ≥2.5, which was considered to be non-effective. Taken together, CEUS, CT, and PET/CT provide objective evaluation of the clinical efficiency of L-ABZ for the treatment of CAE.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy and related factors of pegylated-interferon alpha-2a (PEG-IFN-2a) treatment in patients with hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-positive chronic hepatitis B (CHB) who achieved partial viral response with nucleoside analogue (NA) therapy. METHODS: Patients with HBeAg-positive CHB and partial viral response to NA treatment were administered a PEG-IFN-2a therapy regimen of 180 g subcutaneous injection once weekly for a personlized duration of time. The existing NA therapy was continued in combination with the new PEG-IFN-2a treatment for 12 weeks. Measurements of serum HBV DNA load, hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs), HBeAg and hepatitis B e antibody (anti-HBe) were taken at baseline (prior to addition of the PEG-IFN-2a therapy) and every 3 months afterwards.For determining response to treatment, primary efficacy was defined as undetectable HBsAg and seroconversion, and secondary efficacy was defined as HBsAg less than 10 IU/mL and HBeAg seroconversion.Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS statistical software. RESULTS: A total of 81 consecutive patients with an average of 12.0 months (range: 6.0-24.0 months) of NA therapy were included in the study and received an average of 19.6 months (range: 15.5-33.3 months) of PEG-IFN-2a treatment. At the end of PEG-IFN-2a therapy, 7 (8.6%) of the patients achieved undetectable HBsAg and seroconversion, and 14 (17.3%) showed HBsAg less than 10IU/mL. In addition, 40.7% achieved undetectable HBeAg and seroconversion, a rate that was slightly higher than that (38.3%) seen in treatment-naive patients who received PEG-IFN-2a. Statistical analyses suggest that baseline level of HBsAg at less than 1500 IU/mL may predict end of PEG-IFN-2a treatment response for HBsAg less than 10 IU/mL, as evidenced by the area under the curve measure of 0.747, sensitivity measure of 87.3%, specificity measure of 33.3%, positive predictive value of 82.1% and negative predictive value of 42.8%. CONCLUSION: Patients with HBeAg-positive CHB and partial viral response to NA therapy can achieve undetectable HBsAg and HBeAg seroconversion after switching to PEG-IFN-2a treatment. Baseline HBsAg level may be predictive of response to this therapeutic strategy.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of decompression as the primary treatment of odontogenic cystic lesions of the jaw involving factors that affect relative shrinking speed and bone regeneration. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 32 patients with odontogenic cystic lesions of the jaw underwent decompression with customized thermoplastic resin stents. Clinical examinations and pre- and postdecompression panoramic radiographs were analyzed. RESULTS: The mean relative speed of shrinkage of radicular cysts (RCs; 3.37 cm(2)/month) was faster than those of keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOTs; 2.87 cm(2)/month) and unicystic ameloblastomas (UABs; 2.71 cm(2)/month). The relative shrinking size increased linearly in a time-dependent manner for KCOTs (r = 0.849, P < .001), RCs (r = 0.681, P = .319), and UABs (r = 0.146, P = .730); a similar relation was detected between the primary radiolucent area of cystic lesions before decompression and relative shrinking speed after decompression in KCOTs (r = 0.481, P = .032), RCs (r = 0.260, P = .673), and UABs (r = 0.370, P = .366), but patient age did not affect the relative speed of shrinkage (P > .05). Furthermore, the increase in bone density was more significant in RCs than in KCOTs (P = .026) and UABs (P = .012) after decompression. CONCLUSION: Decompression was effective in reducing odontogenic cystic lesions of the jaw and increasing bone density. For aggressive lesions, secondary definitive surgery was necessary.

Periodontitis, a chronic disease, can result in irreversible tooth loss and diminished quality of life, highlighting the significance of timely periodontitis monitoring and treatment. Meanwhile, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in saliva, produced by pathogenic bacteria of periodontitis, is an important marker for periodontitis monitoring. However, the easy volatility and chemical instability of the molecule pose challenges to oral H2S sensing. Here, we report a wearable hydrogel-based radio frequency (RF) sensor capable of in situ H2S detection and antibacterial treatment. The RF sensor comprises an agarose hydrogel containing conjugated silver nanoparticles-chlorhexidine (AG-AgNPs-CHL hydrogel) integrated with split-ring resonators. Adhered to a tooth, the hydrogel-based RF sensor enables wireless transmission of sensing signals to a mobile terminal and a concurrent release of the broad-spectrum antibacterial agent chlorhexidine without complex circuits. With the selective binding of the AgNPs to the sulfidion, the RF sensor demonstrates good sensitivity, a wide detection range (2-30 µM), and a low limit of detection (1.2 µM). Compared with standard H2S measurement, the wireless H2S sensor can distinguish periodontitis patients from healthy individuals in saliva sample tests. The hydrogel-based wearable sensor will benefit patients with periodontitis by detecting disease-related biomarkers for practical oral health management.

Large quantities of organic dyes are discharged into the environment, causing serious damage to the ecosystem. Therefore, it is urgent to develop inexpensive adsorbents to remove organic dyes. A novel cellulose-based aerogel (MPPA) with 3D porous structure was prepared by using cassava residue (cellulose) as basic construction blocks, doping ferroferric oxide (Fe3O4) for magnetic separation, and applying polyethyleneimine (PEI) as functional material for highly efficient and selective capture of Congo red (CR). MPPA exhibited porous network structure, numerous active capture sites, nontoxicity, high hydrophilicity, and excellent thermal stability. MPPA showed superior adsorption property for CR, with an equilibrium adsorption capacity of 2018.14 mg/g, and still had an adsorption property of 1189.31 mg/g after five recycling procedures. In addition, MPPA has excellent selectivity for CR in four binary dye systems. The adsorption behavior of MPPA on CR was further explored using a multilayer adsorption model, EDR-IDR hybrid model and AOAS model. Electrostatic potential and independent gradient models were used to further verify the possible interaction between MPPA and CR molecules. In conclusion, MPPA is a promising adsorbent in the field of treating anionic dyes.

PURPOSE: To study the gender difference and the regulation of growth and development in normal deciduous dentition. METHODS: A total of 189 children with normal deciduous dentition aged 3 to 6 years in several kindergartens in Xuhui District in Shanghai were selected. The three-dimensional(3D) digital dental models were reconstructed by intraoral scanning. Geomagic Studio, a 3D reverse engineering software, was employed to extract the data, such as the dental arc perimeter of C(APC), the dental arc perimeter of E(APE), the dental arc length of C(LC), the dental arc length of E(LE), the dental arc width of C(C-C), the dental arc width of E(E-E), the mesiodistal width of the deciduous crown, the maxillary and mandibular space. SPSS 22.0 software package was used for data analysis. RESULTS: Parameters of deciduous dentition in boys were significantly elevated than in girls(P<0.05). All the boys and girls were divided into 4 groups by age. In 3-year-old group, significant differences were observed in maxillary APC, C-C, E-E(P<0.05) between boys and girls. In 4-year-old group, all boys' parameters were significantly greater than girls'(P<0.05) except maxillary LC. In 5-year-old group, there were significant differences in all the parameters between boys and girl(P<0.05) except maxillary APE and mandibular APC, LC, LE, C-C. No significant difference was observed in all the parameters except mandibular APE in 6-year old group. The significant difference between boys and girls were observed in the mesiodistal width of each deciduous crown except that of the maxillary lateral incisor and mandibular central incisor (P<0.05). There were significant differences in maxillary LE and E-E among children of different ages(P<0.05).The maxillary space was significantly greater than the mandibular space(P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: There was gender difference in children's normal deciduous dentition, especially when they were 4 years old.

Protein hydrogels are ideal candidates for next-generation biomaterials due to their genetically programmable properties. Herein, we report an entirely protein-based hydrogel as an artificial extracellular matrix (ECM) for regulating the embryonic stem cell growth. A synergy between chemical and physical cross-linking was achieved in one step by SpyTag/SpyCatcher reaction and P zipper association at 37 °C. The hydrogels' stress relaxation behaviors can be tuned across a broad spectrum by single-point mutation on a P zipper. It has been found that faster relaxation can promote the growth of HeLa tumor spheroids and embryonic stem cells, and mechanical regulation of embryonic stem cells occurs via retention of the cells at the G1 phase. The results highlight the promise of genetically encoded protein materials as a platform of artificial ECM for understanding and controlling the complex cell-matrix interactions in a 3D cell culture.

BACKGROUND: Extracting wholly impacted maxillary 3rd molars faces difficulty due to the narrow surgical field, adjacent teeth resistances and risk of oroantral communication. This study is designed to introduce and evaluate the applicability of a novel method-buccal rotation to extract maxillary 3rd molars. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cohort study, from October 1st 2020 to September 30th 2021, 72 wholly impacted maxillary 3rd molars were included. Based on the crowns with coronal 1/3, middle 1/3, apical 1/3 of the adjacent teeth roots, teeth were classified into position I, II, III. Based on the angles < 30°, ≥ 30°but < 60°, ≥ 60° to the adjacent teeth, teeth were classified into angulation A, B, C. Traditional method and novel method-buccal rotation were applied based on the surgical simulations. Surgical results were recorded. To analyze the data, Chi-square test was applied. RESULTS: 82.00% of teeth in position I and 50.00% in position II were designed to use traditional method, 83.33% in position III were using the novel method (p < 0.05). 81.25% of teeth in angulation A and 52.63% in angulation B were designed to use traditional method, 80.00% in angulation C were using the novel method (p < 0.05). Four cases got temporary complications. CONCLUSION: Buccal rotation was applicable to extract the deep impacted maxillary third molars with large angles towards the adjacent teeth.

PURPOSE: To investigate oral health behaviors of first-grade school children and parents' cognition of oral health in urban and suburban areas of Shanghai, and to analyze and compare the differences between the two areas, so as to provide reference for formulating oral health intervention measures and oral health education. METHODS: A total of 3 312 first-grade school-aged children in Shanghai were included by cluster random sampling method. Relevant data were collected through questionnaire survey of parents' oral health and clinical oral examination of children. Chi-square test was used to compare the differences in oral health behaviors of children and parents' oral health cognition between urban and suburban area with SAS 9.4 software package. RESULTS: The proportion of children who brush their teeth more than twice a day in urban and suburban areas was 72.55% and 44.26%, and the proportion of children who brushed their teeth with fluoride toothpaste was 53.25% and 44.79%, respectively. Compared with the suburban area, the brushing habits of school-aged children in urban area were better, the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05). In terms of medical habits, the proportion of children with no dental experience in urban and suburban areas was 26.99% and 44.08%, and the proportion of children with toothache in the past year was lower than that in the last dental visit, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). In terms of parents' cognition and attitude towards oral health knowledge, parents in urban areas were more correct than those in suburban areas, with the average correct rate being 82.56% and 70.42%, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: There are regional differences in oral health behaviors of first-grade school children and parents' oral health knowledge between urban and suburban area in Shanghai. It is suggested that relevant government departments should strengthen oral health education and oral health behavior guidance for parents, and strengthen oral health investment in non-central urban areas.
