RESUMO

The influence of surfactants on the stability of cyclodextrin (CD) Pickering emulsions is not well understood. In this study, we report two-way effects of Tween 80 and soybean lecithin (PL) on the long term stability of Pickering emulsions stabilized by the self-assembled microcrystals of α-CD and medium chain triglycerides (MCT). The CD emulsions in the absence and presence of Tween 80 or PL at different concentrations were prepared and characterized by the droplet size, viscosity, contact angle, interfacial tension and residual emulsion values. After adding Tween 80 and PL, similar effects on the size distribution and contact angle were observed. However, changes of viscosity and interfacial tension were significantly different and two-way effects on the stability were found: (i) synergistic enhancement by Tween 80; (ii) inhibition at low and enhancement at high concentrations by PL. The stability enhancement of Tween 80 was due to the interfacial tension decrease caused by the interaction of Tween 80 with CD at the o/w interface at lower concentrations, and significant viscosity increase caused by the Tween 80-CD assembly in the continuous phase. For PL at low concentrations, the replacement of α-CD/MCT by α-CD/PL particles at the o/w interface was observed, leading to inhibitory effects. High concentrations of PL resulted in an extremely low interfacial tension and stable emulsion. In conclusion, the extensive inclusion of surfactants by CD leads to their unique effects on the stability of CD emulsions, for which the changes of viscosity and interfacial tension caused by host-guest interactions play important roles.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and treatment outcome of C-arm CT percutaneous vertebroplasty in the treatment of cervical 1 (C1) vertebral metastases. METHODS: This report recruited a male patient diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma and C1 vertebral metastases, who had suffered from severe neck pain symptoms and the analgesic showed little soothing effect. Under the guidance of C-arm CT, an 18G coaxial needle was used to puncture the left lateral mass of C1 vertebral metastases from lateral space between thyroid cartilage and the left carotid sheath, with 2 ml bone cement injected. RESULTS: Postoperative C-arm CT three-dimensional reconstruction scan showed that the bone cement was well filled and distributed in the left lateral mass of C1 vertebral body, and no leakage of bone cement was observed. The neck pain of the patients was significantly relieved one week after the operation. CONCLUSION: Under the guidance of C-arm CT, cement augmentation using percutaneous vertebroplasty in an anterior cervical direction could serve as a safe and effective pain relief approach for patients with C1 vertebral metastases.

RESUMO

The set reaction of glass ionomer cement has been investigated by means of IR spectra. It has been found that the band intensity around 1413 cm(-1) due to the vibration of polyacrylate salt increased with aging, and the shoulder band at 950 cm(-1) due to the stretching vibration of Si-OH still appeared during the periods studied. The results are consistent with that of mechanical determination of compressive strength, which suggested that the crosslink density increase resulting from the slow diffusion of Ca2+ and Al3+ is responsible for compressive strength increasing with aging, and forming and maturing of interface layer comprising of silica gel also have a significant effect on the properties of glass ionomer cements.

RESUMO

This article devotes itself to evaluating the biocompatibility of synthetic macromolecular resin class of Comfort denture adhesive, which was developed by the present authors. Acute toxicity, haemolysis, cytotoxicity, sensitization and oral mucous stimulation were tested with standard method (ISO7406-1997 and YY0268-1995). The results showed that no toxic effect was observed with in vivo tests and no cytotoxic effect was observed with in vitro MTT assay. Haemolysis rate of the material (2.95%) indicated good hemaocompatibility. No local mucous membrane irritation reaction was noted after the relevant tests. The developed Comfort denture adhesive exhibited good biocompatiblility.

RESUMO

Hydroxyapatite coating on metal implants is an effective method to enhance bioactive properties of the metal surface. We report here a method to coat the Ti-6Al-4V alloy with hydroxyapatite crystals. After alkaline/heat treatment, the spontaneous growth of organoapatite on titanium alloy surface involves sequential preadsorption of titanium isopropoxide (TIPO) and the copolymer of acrylic acid and itaconic acid on the metal, followed by exposure to simulated body fluid (SBF). The organoapatite characterization of the coating was carried out by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometer, and X-ray diffraction. The copolymer of acrylic acid and itaconic acid overlayer which is rich of carboxylate groups can lead to the deposition of needle-like and homogeneous HA on the surface after immersion in SBF.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To recognize the clinical features of the enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection with pulmonary edema or pulmonary hemorrhage as a fulminant and often fatal illness. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of the three cases with EV71 infection for clinical manifestation, laboratory data, medications, outcome etc. RESULTS: All the cases were infants and they all died. These infants had no skin or mucosal lesions, however, they had sudden onset of cyanosis and tachypnea 1 to 2 days after the onset of the febrile disease with vomiting. All these 3 cases were misdiagnosed and were treated for shock on admission. Pulmonary hemorrhage was not considered in any of the cases on admission. All the cases received tracheal intubation when foamy secretions were discharged from mouth and nose of the patients and notable cyanosis was noted. After intubation, all had pink foamy fluid flew out from the endotracheal tube. The patients had hyperglycemia and limb weakness, two had tachycardia, and hypertension was found in one case. Chest X-ray showed bilateral or unilateral widespread air space opacity, but the cardiac size and shape were normal. All the patients had leucocytosis. EV71 infection was confirmed by detection of specific sequences of the virus in throat swab and tracheal secretions samples and in one case in cerebrospinal fluid sample. CONCLUSION: Pulmonary edema or pulmonary hemorrhage occurred in the 3 cases with EV71-infected infants. The initial presentation was often nonspecific with fever and vomiting, and sudden appearances of cyanosis, tachypnea, tachycardia, hypertension or hypotension, limb weakness may suggest pulmonary edema or hemorrhage. Excessive fluid resuscitation may deteriorate the illness, on the contrary, fluid restriction and inotropic agents, and early intubation with positive pressure mechanical ventilation may be the proper treatment.

RESUMO

Pdgfra is expressed in the mesenchyme of multiple organs during embryonic development and Pdgfralpha is involved in cell proliferation, differentiation, migration, and apoptosis in many tissues. A fine-tuned regulation of gene transcription is required to achieve these effects. To investigate if the Shh signaling pathway is involved in the tightly regulated Pdgfra expression during embryogenesis, we systematically compared Gli1 and Pdgfralpha mRNA expression patterns in vivo from mouse embryonic day 9.5 to 14.5. We found that an initial partly overlapping expression of Gli1 and Pdgfralpha in the mesenchyme of foregut and somites was changed to different expression patterns when the mesenchyme differentiated into specialized structures such as intestinal villi and chondrocytes. Gli1 and Pdgfra were also expressed differently in the developing lung, heart, central nervous system, skin, tooth, and eye. Importantly, neither Pdgfralpha mRNA patterns nor levels were altered in Ihh mutant embryos although Gli1 and Ptc mRNA levels were dramatically reduced. Our results demonstrate that Gli1 is not required to induce Pdgfra expression during embryonic bone development, and are consistent with previous findings that Pdgfralpha and Hh pathways serve different functions in, e.g., bone, gut, and lung development. However, we cannot exclude the possibility that Glis can have more complex regulatory effects on Pdgfra gene activity, nor can we exclude such effects in pathological conditions.
