RESUMO

Most fluorescence-based bioanalytical applications need labeling of analytes. Conventional labeling requires washing to remove the excess fluorescent labels and reduce the noise signals. These pretreatments are labor intensive and need specialized equipment, hindering portable applications in resource-limited areas. Herein, we use the aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) to realize the partitioning-induced isolation of labeled analytes from background signals without extra processing steps. ATPS is formed by mixing two polymers at sufficiently high concentrations. ATPS-based isolation is driven by intrinsic affinity differences between analytes and excess labels. To demonstrate the partitioning-induced isolation and analysis, fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) is selected as the interfering fluorophore, and a monoclonal antibody (IgG) is used as the analyte. To optimize ATPS compositions, different molecular weights and mass fractions of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and dextran and different phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) concentrations are investigated. Various operational scales of our approach are demonstrated, suggesting its compatibility with various bioanalytical applications. In centimeter-scale ATPS, the optimized distribution ratios of IgG and FITC are 91.682 and 0.998 using PEG 6000 Da and dextran 10,000 Da in 10 mM PBS. In millimeter-scale ATPS, the analyte is enriched to 6.067 fold using 15 wt % PEG 35,000 Da and 5 wt % dextran 500,000 Da in 10 mM PBS. In microscale ATPS, analyte dilutions are isolated into picoliter droplets, and the measured fluorescence intensities linearly correlated with the analyte concentrations (R2 = 0.982).

Cellular senescence severely limits the research and the application of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs). A previous study conducted by our research group revealed a close implication of ROR2 in DPSC senescence, although the mechanism underlying the regulation of ROR2 in DPSCs remains poorly understood so far. In the present study, it was revealed that the expression of the ROR2-interacting transcription factor MSX2 was increased in aging DPSCs. It was demonstrated that the depletion of MSX2 inhibits the senescence of DPSCs and restores their self-renewal capacity, and the simultaneous overexpression of ROR2 enhanced this effect. Moreover, MSX2 knockdown suppressed the transcription of NOP2/Sun domain family member 2 (NSUN2), which regulates the expression of p21 by binding to and causing the 5-methylcytidine methylation of the 3'- untranslated region of p21 mRNA. Interestingly, ROR2 downregulation elevated the levels of MSX2 protein, and not the MSX2 mRNA expression, by reducing the phosphorylation level of MSX2 and inhibiting the RNF34-mediated MSX2 ubiquitination degradation. The results of the present study demonstrated the vital role of the ROR2/MSX2/NSUN2 axis in the regulation of DPSC senescence, thereby revealing a potential target for antagonizing DPSC aging.

Paeonia is recognized globally due to its ornamental value. However, the mechanisms behind the formation of distinct levels of lignification in Paeonia stems remain largely unknown. In this study, we selected three representative Paeonia species, namely P. ostii (shrub), P. lactiflora (herb), and P. × 'Hexie' (semi-shrub), to evaluate and contrast their respective anatomical structure, phytochemical composition and transcriptomic profile. Our results showed that the degree of lignin deposition on the cell wall, along with the total amount of lignin and its monomers (especially G-lignin) were higher in P. ostii stems compared to the other two species at almost all development stages except 80 days after flowering. Furthermore, we estimated a total number of unigenes of 60,238 in P. ostii, 43,563 in P. × 'Hexie', and 40,212 in P. lactiflora from stem transcriptome. We then built a co-expression network of 25 transcription factors and 21 enzyme genes involved in lignin biosynthesis and identified nine key candidate genes. The expression patterns of these genes were positively correlated with the transcription levels of PAL, C4H, 4CL2, CCR, and COMT, as well as lignin content. Moreover, the highest relative expression levels of CCR, 4CL2, and C4H were found in P. ostii. This study provides an explanation for the observed differences in lignification between woody and herbaceous Paeonia stems, and constitutes a novel reference for molecular studies of stem-specific lignification process and lignin biosynthesis that can impact the ornamental industry.

The role of the Hippo signaling pathway in cranial neural crest (CNC) development is poorly understood. We used the Wnt1(Cre) and Wnt1(Cre2SOR) drivers to conditionally ablate both Yap and Taz in the CNC of mice. When using either Cre driver, Yap and Taz deficiency in the CNC resulted in enlarged, hemorrhaging branchial arch blood vessels and hydrocephalus. However, Wnt1(Cre2SOR) mutants had an open cranial neural tube phenotype that was not evident in Wnt1(Cre) mutants. In O9-1 CNC cells, the loss of Yap impaired smooth muscle cell differentiation. RNA-sequencing data indicated that Yap and Taz regulate genes encoding Fox transcription factors, specifically Foxc1. Proliferation was reduced in the branchial arch mesenchyme of Yap and Taz CNC conditional knockout (CKO) embryos. Moreover, Yap and Taz CKO embryos had cerebellar aplasia similar to Dandy-Walker spectrum malformations observed in human patients and mouse embryos with mutations in Foxc1. In embryos and O9-1 cells deficient for Yap and Taz, Foxc1 expression was significantly reduced. Analysis of Foxc1 regulatory regions revealed a conserved recognition element for the Yap and Taz DNA binding co-factor Tead. ChIP-PCR experiments supported the conclusion that Foxc1 is directly regulated by the Yap-Tead complex. Our findings uncover important roles for Yap and Taz in CNC diversification and development.

Wound infection caused by multiantibiotic-resistant bacteria has become a serious problem, and more effective antibacterial agents are required. Herein, we report the preparation of wound dressings using the biocompatible chitosan (CS) as a reducing and stabilizing agent in the synthesis of 2-mercapto-1-methylimidazole (MMT)-capped gold nanocomposites (CS-Au@MMT), with efficient antibacterial effects. The synergistic effects of AuNPs, MMT, and CS led to the disruption of bacterial membranes. After blending with gelatin, crosslinking with tannin acid, and freeze-drying, CS-gelatin (CS-Au@MMT/gelatin) dressing was prepared. It had good mechanical properties as well as efficient water absorption and retention capacities. It exhibited outstanding biocompatibility both in vitro and in a cell-based wound infection model. Moreover, the in vivo rabbit wound healing model revealed that the CS-Au@MMT/gelatin dressing possesses significant antibacterial potential against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus-associated wound infection. Therefore, the CS-Au@MMT/gelatin dressing described in this study may have huge potential in biomedical applications.

BACKGROUND: Local antibiotic therapy has gained increasing attraction in the prevention and treatment of fracture infection. However, no reports have used local antibiotic therapy in the management of early infection after fracture fixation with retention of implants. METHODS: The present surgical technique report the use of antibiotic impregnated bone cement in the management of early infection after fracture fixation. Initially, the fractures were fixed with plates. The average time from initial procedure to debridement was15 days (range 9 to 25 days). The infections were treated with irrigation, debridement, and retention of the implant. The lateral surface of the plates was coated with antibiotic cement and the bone defect was filled with antibiotic cement spacer after thorough debridement. RESULTS: Ten patients underwent this technique. The mean follow-up was 2.0 years (range 6 months to 4 years). The bone union rate was 100%, and the average time to bone healing was5.5 months.There was recurrence of infection in one patient before bone healing, but the implants were left in place until bone healed, and the infection was eradicated after implant removal. CONCLUSION: Coating the plate with antibiotic cement is a simple technique which may play a role in the management of early infection after fracture fixation.

BACKGROUND: Cement spacers (Masquelet technique) have traditionally been used for the treatment of segmental bone defects. However, no reports have used cement spacers for the treatment of small/partial segmental bone defects associated with osteomyelitis and compared the outcomes with cement beads. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 40 patients with post-traumatic osteomyelitis of the tibia who underwent treatment, which was performed in two stages. In the first stage, thorough debridement was performed, and bone defects were filled with either antibiotic-impregnated cement beads (bead group, 18 patients) or spacers (spacer group, 22 patients). In the second stage, the cement beads or spacers were removed (for the spacer group, the induced membrane formed by the spacer was preserved) and the bone defects were filled with cancellous autografts. RESULTS: All patients in the bead group had small/partial segmental bone defects after debridement, while 3 patients in the spacer group had large/segmental bone defects. The mean volume of bone defects of the spacer group (40.4 cm3) was significantly larger than that of the bead group (32.4 cm3). The infection control rate (88.9%,16/18 vs 90.9%, 20/22), bone healing time (8.5 months vs 7.5 months) and complication rates (22.2%, 4/18 vs 27.2%, 6/22) were comparable between bead group and spacer group. CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that cement spacers may have an infection control rate comparable to cement beads in the treatment of bone defects associated with post-traumatic osteomyelitis. Furthermore, cement spacers could be used for the reconstruction of small/partial segmental bone defects as well as for large/segmental bone defects, whereas cement beads were not suitable for the reconstruction of large/segmental bone defects.

Understanding membrane fouling induced by dissolved organic matter (DOM) is of primary importance for developing effective fouling control and prevention strategies. In this work, we combine multivariate curve resolution-alternating least squares analysis with infrared attenuated total reflection mapping to explore the fouling process of microfiltration and ultrafiltration membranes caused by two typical DOMs, humic acid (HA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA). The spectral contributions of different foulants and the membrane substrate were successfully discriminated, thereby enabling the diagnosis of fouling origins. Membrane fouling caused by HA is more severe than that by BSA. Three periods, the initial adsorption stage, the equilibrium stage, and the accumulation stage, were observed for the HA-induced fouling process. The integrated approach presented herein elegantly demonstrates the spatial and temporal characterization of membrane fouling processes, along with relative concentrations of the involved species, and suggests a promising perspective for understanding the interaction mechanisms between foulant species and membranes at the molecular level.

The transdermal administration of chemotherapeutic agents is a persistent challenge for tumor treatments. A model anticancer agent, epirubicin (EPI), is attached to functionalized superparamagnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles (SPION). The covalent modification of the SPION results in EPI-SPION, a potential drug delivery vector that uses magnetism for the targeted transdermal chemotherapy of skin tumors. The spherical EPI-SPION composite exhibits excellent magnetic responsiveness with a saturation magnetization intensity of 77.8 emu g(-1) . They feature specific pH-sensitive drug release, targeting the acidic microenvironment typical in common tumor tissues or endosomes/lysosomes. Cellular uptake studies using human keratinocyte HaCaT cells and melanoma WM266 cells demonstrate that SPION have good biocompatibility. After conjugation with EPI, the nanoparticles can inhibit WM266 cell proliferation; its inhibitory effect on tumor proliferation is determined to be dose-dependent. In vitro transdermal studies demonstrate that the EPI-SPION composites can penetrate deep inside the skin driven by an external magnetic field. The magnetic-field-assisted SPION transdermal vector can circumvent the stratum corneum via follicular pathways. The study indicates the potential of a SPION-based vector for feasible transdermal therapy of skin cancer.

PURPOSE: Some believe that the recurrence of sublingual ranula results from incomplete removal of the sublingual gland (SLG), but recurrence remains in some patients who undergo repeated excision of the remnant SLG, and the final solution to the recurrence is to remove the ipsilateral submandibular gland (SMG). In the authors' experience, preoperative aspirate from a sublingual ranula was a thick mucus-like fluid resembling egg white, whereas that from recurrent cyst after removal of the SLG was thin serous fluid. Based on the difference of the aspirated fluids, the authors speculated that the recurrent cystic mass might not be a ranula, but rather iatrogenic saliva leakage from the SMG through the previous surgically damaged excretory duct of the SLG (Bartholin duct) that opens into the SMG duct (Wharton duct). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A gross anatomic study was performed of the ductal system of the SLG and the anatomic communication between the Bartholin duct and Wharton duct. RESULTS: Four anatomic SLG duct variants were found. 1) The SLG has 1 Bartholin duct that seems to fuse with the Wharton duct but does not join the Wharton duct, running parallel to the Wharton duct and opening at its own orifice adjacent to and a short distance from the orifice of the Wharton duct (35.8%). 2) The SLG has 1 Bartholin duct that empties into the middle section of the Wharton duct (32.1%). 3) The SLG has 2 Bartholin ducts, one of which joins the Wharton duct and the other opens at its own orifice near that of the Wharton duct on the floor of the mouth (7.1%). 4) The SLG has many fine ducts (Rivinus ducts) that open at the floor of the mouth with no relation to the Wharton duct (25.0%). Of the 4 anatomic SLG duct variations, types 2 and 3 form immediate anatomic communication between the Bartholin duct and Wharton duct (39.2%). CONCLUSIONS: Several conclusions can be made from the present anatomic findings. 1) A certain proportion of Bartholin ducts open into the Wharton duct, and "recurrent ranula" after removal of the SLG can result from iatrogenic saliva leakage from the SMG through the surgically severed Bartholin duct if the aspirated fluid from the "recurrent cyst" is a thin seriflux. 2) The Bartholin duct emptying into the Wharton duct should be ligated during removal of the SLG to prevent local saliva accumulation from the SMG or even caudal "recurrence" as plunging ranula. 3) The surgical incision for SLG removal should be sutured loosely so that the surgically severed Bartholin duct with communication to the Wharton duct can reopen at the floor of mouth as an outlet for possible saliva leakage from the SMG and saliva accumulation can be avoided.

OBJECTIVE: To collect and analyze the Three-dimensional (3D) facial profile variation of edentulous patients restored by complete denture. METHODS: The 3D facial images of 20 Atwood Class II edentulous patients were taken by DSC-2 3D facial imaging system before and after restoration of complete denture. Then, the two 3D facial images of each patient before and after restoration were registered in the same coordinate system by partial structure overlap. The differences between these two 3D facial images were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: The major facial profile variation of Atwood Class II edentulous patients restored by complete denture focused in the area around the upper lip and the corner of the mouth. The change of lower lip and chin area was not obvious. The shift in the sagittal direction was significantly more evident than that in the vertical direction, while the shift in the horizontal direction was the least one. CONCLUSION: The pattern of facial profile variation of edentulous patients restored by complete denture based on 3D imaging may provide reliable data support for prediction and communication in clinical practice.

Nanobubble (NB) represents a promising practice for mitigating fouling in biogas slurry distribution systems. However, its anti-fouling effectiveness and optimal use dosage are unknown. This study investigated the NB anti-fouling capacity at six concentrations (0 %-100 %, denoting the ratio of maximum NB-infused water; particle concentrations in 0 % and 100 % ratios were 1.08 × 107 and 1.19 × 109 particles mL-1, respectively). Results showed that NB effectively mitigated multiple fouling at 50 %-100 % ratios, whereas low NB concentration exacerbated fouling. NB functioned both as an activator and a bactericide for microorganisms, significantly promoting biofouling at 5 %-25 %, and inhibiting biofouling at 50 %-100 %. Owing to an enhanced biofilm biomineralization ability, low NB concentration aggravated precipitate fouling, whereas high NB doses effectively mitigated precipitates. Additionally, higher NB concentrations demonstrated superior control efficiency against particulate fouling. This study contributes insights into NB effectiveness in controlling various fouling types within wastewater distribution systems.

Recycling saline wastewater for agricultural irrigation offer a promising solution to address both water scarcity and anthropogenic pollution. However, organic-inorganic fouling in saline wastewater irrigation systems (SWIS) poses significant technical and economic challenges. Traditional chemical biocides are currently insufficient for controlling composite organic-inorganic fouling and may pose environmental hazards. This study proposed a greener approach using organic acid (OA) fertilizers to alleviate organic-inorganic fouling in agricultural SWIS. The treatment performances were assessed employing four types of OA fertilizers (i.e., humic acid, alginic acid, nucleotide, and ammonia acid) and a negative control. Results showed that three types of OA, i.e., alginic acid, nucleotide, and ammonia acid, effectively reduced the total SWIS fouling content by 11.2%-57.4%, whereas humic acid exacerbated fouling by 11.2%-57.4%. Specifically, all types of OA significantly mitigated the content of inorganic fouling (precipitates and silicates) by 10.7%-42.3% by forming loosed and sparser structures. However, OA exhibited minimum effects on controlling silica fouling. Meanwhile, except the humic acid, other types of OA decreased the total content of organic fouling by 17.2%-39.5% by reducing the content of humic substances and building block fractions. In addition, the significant binary interactions of organic-inorganic fouling indicated the active role of calcium silica and biomineralization fouling. These findings provide insight into the development of appropriate and eco-friendly antifouling strategies for SWIS, with implications for recycling and reusing saline wastewater.

Three green non-enzymatic catalysis pretreatments (NECPs) including autohydrolysis, subcritical CO2-assisted seawater autohydrolysis, and inorganic salt catalysis were utilized to simultaneously produce xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS), glucose, and cellulolytic enzyme lignin (CEL) from sugarcane bagasse (SCB). The yield of XOS in all three NECPs was over 50 % with a competitive glucose yield of enzymatic hydrolysis. And the effects of different pretreatments on the chemical structure and composition of CEL samples were also investigated. The pretreatments significantly increased the thermal stability, yield, and purity of the CEL samples. Moreover, the net yield of lignin was 58.3 % with lignin purity was 98.9 % in the autohydrolysis system. Furthermore, there was a decrease in the molecular weight of CEL samples as the pretreatment intensity increased. And the original lignin structural units sustained less damage during the NECPs, due to the cleavage of the ß-O-4 bonds dominating lignin degradation. Meanwhile, these pretreatments increased the phenolic-OH in CEL samples, making the lignin more reactive, and enhancing its subsequent modification and utilization. Collectively, the described techniques have demonstrated practical significance for the coproduction of XOS and glucose, and lignin, providing a promising strategy for full utilization of biomass.

BACKGROUND: The technology of capturing circulating tumor cells (CTCs) plays a crucial role in the diagnosis, evaluation of therapeutic efficacy, and prediction of prognosis in lung cancer. However, the presence of complex blood environment often results in severe nonspecific protein adsorption and interferences from blood cells, which negatively impacts the specificity of CTCs capture. There is a great need for development of novel nanomaterials for CTCs capture with prominent anti-nonspecific adsorptions from proteins or blood cells. RESULTS: We present a novel immune magnetic probe Fe3O4@(PEI/AA)4@Apt. The surface of Fe3O4 particles was modified with four layers of PEI/AA composite by layer-by-layer assembly. Furthermore, aptamers targeting epithelial marker EpCAM (SYL3C) and mesenchymal marker CSV (ZY5C) were simultaneously connected on Fe3O4@(PEI/AA)4 to improve the detection of different phenotypic CTCs and reduce false negatives. The results demonstrated that the (PEI/AA)4 coatings not only minimized non-specific protein adsorptions, but also significantly reduced the adsorption rate of red blood cells to a mere 1 %, as a result of which, the Fe3O4@(PEI/AA)4@Apt probe achieved a remarkably high capture efficiency toward CTCs (95.9 %). In the subsequent validation of clinical samples, the probe was also effective in capturing rare CTCs from lung cancer patients. SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY: A (PEI/AA) polymerized composite with controllable layers was fabricated by layer-by-layer self-assembly technique, which displayed remarkable anti-nonspecific adsorption capabilities toward proteins and cells. Importantly, Fe3O4@(PEI/AA)4@Apt probe significantly improved CTCs capture purity in lung cancer patients to 89.36 %. For the first time, this study combined controllable (PEI/AA) layers with magnetic separation to innovatively build a resistant interface that significantly improves the specific capture performances of CTCs, broadening the application of this polymerized composite.

The Cu electrolytic sludge is a hazardous waste because of its high Cu and As contents. In contrast, As content in Cu scraps is low but causes massive floating slime to be formed during its electrolytic refining, thus decreasing quality of the obtained cathode Cu. In this study, an innovative process was developed to transfer As from the electrolytic Cu sludge into Cu scraps, realizing the recycled utilization of As and Cu from them. The Cu electrolytic sludge was firstly subjected to oxidization roasting in the presence of Ca(OH)2, where the As2O3, Cu3As, and elemental As from the sludge were oxidized and immobilized into Cu3(AsO4)2 and Ca3(AsO4)2. The Cu3(AsO4)2 and Ca3(AsO4)2 retained in the roasted residue. The As volatilization efficiency was only 3.7% under the optimized roasting condition. In the next co-fire-refining of the roasted residue and Cu scraps, the As in Cu3(AsO4)2 and Ca3(AsO4)2 was reduced and transferred into the refined Cu at a content of 0.17 wt%. Although a volatile As2O3 could be generated in this co-fire-refining, the molten Cu scraps restricted As volatilization by forming a Cu-As alloy. With the obtained As-containing refined Cu used in electrolytic refining, the formation of floating slime could be decreased and consequently the quality of the cathode Cu would be increased. This research provided an alternative technology for Cu and As recycling by co-treating Cu electrolytic sludges and Cu scraps.

Massive amounts of waste copper converter slags have been produced from pyrometallurgical extraction of copper from copper concentrates, and the disposal of them in landfills creates serious environmental problems. However, this converter slag contains numerous valuable heavy metals, including copper, cobalt and tin etc. In this research, due to similar properties of iron and cobalt, pig iron with a low melting point was creatively used as capturing agent for cobalt recycling in a smelting reduction. The recovery of copper and tin was also studied. The phase transformation during reduction process was clarified by X-ray diffraction and Scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometer analyses. After the reduction performed at 1250 °C, the copper, cobalt and tin were recovered in a copper-cobalt-tin-iron alloy. The addition of pig iron improved cobalt yield, which was ascribed to the enrichment of cobalt in an iron-cobalt alloy phase. This decreased activity of the reduced cobalt and promoted reduction of cobalt oxide. As a result, the cobalt yield had a significant increase from 66.2% to 90.1% by adding 2% pig iron. Similarly, the copper also accelerated tin recovery through the formation of a copper-tin alloy. The copper and tin yields reached 94.4% and 95.0%, respectively. This work provided a high efficiency method to recover copper, cobalt and tin from waste copper converter slags.

OBJECTIVE: At present, the influence of Modic changes (MCs) on postoperative fusion rate of lumbar interbody fusion (LIF) is mainly focused on the medium- and long-term fusion rate, while the short-term fusion rate has not been reported. The aim of this study was to compare the short-term fusion rate of lumbar degenerative disease patients with and without MCs after single level transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF). METHODS: In this retrospective and matched-pair case control study, we included 100 patients who underwent TLIF from January 2017 to January 2020 and had at least two follow-up visits over a two-year period. Fifty patients with MCs (MCs group) were matched with 50 patients without MCs (non MCs group) for age, sex, surgical level, diagnosis, operative time, and intraoperative blood loss. We collected the X-ray and computed tomography (CT) data of patients from 3 months to 2 years after the operation to assess bony fusion and the cage union ratio. According to the type of cage, the MCs group was further divided into the nano-hydroxyapatite/polyamide 66 (n-HA/PA66) group and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) group, and the fusion performance between the two groups was compared. Finally, age, sex, body mass index (BMI), smoking and cage type were included in the logistic regression model for risk factor analysis. RESULTS: The bony fusion rates in the MCs group at 3 months, 6 months, 1 year and 2 years after surgery were significantly lower than those in the non MCs group (P < 0.05) (23.8% vs 62.5%, 52.6% vs 78.9%, 61.1% vs 83.3%, 74.0% vs 90.0%). The average coronal cage union ratios of the upper and lower endplates in the MCs group were significantly lower than those in the non MCs group (54.3% ± 17.5% vs 75.0% ± 17.2%, P < 0.05; 73.3% ± 12.0% vs 84.9% ± 8.0%, P < 0.05). Similarly, analogous results were obtained by comparing the MCs and non MCs groups' three-dimensional CT sagittal plane images (62.5% ± 16.5% vs 76.1% ± 12.4%, P < 0.05; 67.0% ± 13.9% vs 79.8% ± 11.5%, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Short-term fusion rates were lower in the MCs group than in the non MCs group. The coronal and sagittal cage union ratio in the MCs group was lower than that in the non MCs group. The fusion performance of n-HA/PA66 and PEEK cages in the MCs group was comparable.

As two emerging pollutants of great concern, microplastics (MPs) and antibiotics inevitably cooccur in various aquatic environments and interact with each other, impacting the fate and ecological risks. Aging obviously complicates their interaction and deserves further study. Therefore, the adsorption-desorption behaviors of ciprofloxacin (CIP) onto polystyrene (PS) fragments with various aging extent were investigated, and the key physiochemical properties influencing the interaction and the interaction mechanisms were clarified by redundancy analysis, FTIR and XPS spectra. The physicochemical properties of PS MPs were significantly changed with aging time, and the morphological and chemical changes seemed to occur asynchronously. The adsorption of CIP onto the pristine PS MPs relied on physisorption, especially the ion-involving electrostatic and cation-π interaction. Due to the hydrogen bonding formed by the C-OH, CO, and O-CO groups of PS and CIP, the adsorption capacities of the aged PS MPs were greatly increased. The desorption efficiency of CIP from MPs in the gastric fluid was closely related to the solution ionic strengths, C-OH and CO groups of MPs, while that in the intestinal fluid was associated with O-CO groups of MPs. The different impact factors could be well described by the differences in the chemical components and pHs of the simulated gastric and intestinal fluids. This study gives a comprehensive understanding of the adsorption-desorption behaviors of antibiotics onto MPs at a molecular level and indicates that MPs could act as Trojan horses to transport antibiotics into aquatic organisms.

Conductive hydrogel (CH) as flexible electrophysiology interface has become the new trend of bioelectronics, but still challenging in synergizing the biocompatibility, mechanics and comprehensive electrical performance. Hyaluronic acid (HA), featured with abundant active sites for personalized-modification and well-known biocompatibility, is one of the alterative candidates. The obstacle lies in the unstable conductivity from the ionic conduction, and the electronic conduction by embedding conductive nanoparticles (NPs) is likely to result in inhomogeneous CH with poor stretchability and discontinuous conductive network. Herein, inspired by catechol chemistry, dopamine (DA)-modified HA was homogeneously composited with DA-modified poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS, named PP), to produce particle-free conductive hydrogel (HA-DA-PP). The DA-introduced multiple bondings in HA network and PP molecules brought aqueous conductive PP into HA hydrogel to form a homogeneous crosslinking network, imparted the flexible stretchability. By accurately regulation, HA-DA-PP achieved high stretchability with large tensile deformation (over 470 %) in the category of natural polymer-based hydrogels. Moreover, the interaction between DA and PP (conformational transition and charge transfer) could effectively enhance the hydrogel's conductivity. Consequently, HA-DA-PP hydrogel showed high sensibility to human movement, epidermal and in vivo electrophysiological signals monitoring. Overall, DA-mediated multiple bonding is a powerful strategy for constructing CH with high performance for bioelectronics.
