BACKGROUND: Previous reports have described hypogonadism associated with virus infection such as hantavirus, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2). However, to our best knowledge there has been no case report of secondary hypogonadism following hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). CASE PRESENTATION: A previously healthy 28-year-old man with no history of major physical and psychological trauma, presented with bilateral gynecomastia and erectile dysfunction 2 weeks after HFMD. Laboratory testament showed the level of gonadotropin hormones declined. Imaging examination demonstrated no major abnormal change in pituitary or reproductive system. The diagnosis of hypogonadism was established. Then the patient was ordered to maintain mental health outward of hospital without drug intervention. One month after presentation, his gonadotropin hormone level and sexual desire had recovered, while bilateral gynecomastia and erectile dysfunction symptoms disappeared. CONCLUSIONS: Physicians should notice the possibility for hypogonadism in adult patients with a recent history of HFMD.

RESUMO

Phycocyanin is a blue fluorescent protein with multi-bioactive functions. However, the multi-bioactivities and spectral stability of phycocyanin are susceptible to external environmental conditions, which limit its wide application. Here, the structure, properties, and biological activity of phycocyanin were discussed. This review highlights the significance of the microcapsules' wall materials which commonly protect phycocyanin from environmental interference and summarizes the current preparation principles and characteristics of microcapsules in food and pharma industries, including spray drying, electrospinning, electrospraying, liposome delivery, sharp-hole coagulation baths, and ion gelation. Moreover, the major technical challenge and corresponding countermeasures of phycocyanin microencapsulation are also appraised, providing insights for the broader application of phycocyanin.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the prevalence and years lived with disability (YLD) from dental caries among children and adolescents and the time trends over the past two decades in Sichuan province, the largest province in west China. METHODS: Based on the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015 (GBD2015), which systematically assessed the epidemiological characteristics of major diseases and their transitions by country and region from 1990 to 2015, we extracted the estimated results for China. We then used the Bayesian meta-regression method to estimate the sex- and age-specific prevalences and YLDs from dental caries among children and adolescents under 15 years old in Sichuan province and compared them with global and national indicators for the same period. RESULTS: In 2015, there were almost 6 million cases of dental caries in children and adolescents (aged < 15 years) in Sichuan province, accounting for 6% of the total cases in China. For children under 5 years, the prevalence of deciduous caries was 55.9%, and the YLDs value was 10.8 per 100,000, while it was 24.3% and 5.1 per 100,000 respectively among 5- to 14-year-olds; for those aged 5 to 14 years, the prevalence of permanent caries was 21.5%, and the YLDs value was 11.5 per 100,000. From 1990 to 2015, the prevalence of dental caries for children under 5 years increased substantially, by 16.2%, and the YLDs increased by 8.7%. Among those aged 5 to 14 years, the prevalence increased and the YLDs decreased. CONCLUSION: Dental caries remains a huge health burden in Western China. In contrast to the global and national data, the trend has increased rapidly over the past 25 years in this region. This work provides suggestions for the prevention and control for oral health in China with the policy of two-child.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacies of non-surgical treatment for pediatric and adult sagittal fractures of mandibular condyle. METHODS: From January 1985 to December 2010, our department treated 67 cases (82 sides) sagittal fractures of mandibular condyle with occlusal splint at a height of 1-2 mm in molar region for six months or other non-surgical treatment. Their clinical and radiological remodeling of affected condyles after treatment were reviewed at six mouths, one year and each year after treatment. They were divided into 2 groups according to age. There were 28 patients (34 sides) aged over 12 years and 39 patients (48 sides) under 12 years. During a follow-up period of 2-25 years, mandibular activity, mouth opening and parallel CT scan of condylar morphological alterations were examined. RESULTS: Under 12-year-old group:good mandibular function was observed in 39 patients. Maximal mouth opening over 35 mm was achieved at 6 months.Only 11 of 39 patients had deviation on mouth opening at 6 months.Radiological studies showed that 32 condyles were complete remodeling and 16 condyles were partial remodeling. Poor remodeling was not observed. Over 12-year-old group:Ankylosis occurred in 4 joints. And 15 of 28 patients had deviation on mouth opening at 6 months.Radiological studies showed the remodeling of condyles was complete (n = 6), partial (n = 16) and poor (n = 12) respectively. CONCLUSION: Mandibular functional recovery and condylar remodeling are better in children with more powerful healing and reconstructing capacities.

OBJECTIVE: Analysis the result of human mandible and temporomandibular joint using two different three-dimensional finite element method under different mechanical models. METHODS: The 3-dimensional model including cortical and cancellous bone for human mandible was obtained through computed tomography (CT) scan. Then the model was meshed in the software ICEM CFD. The passive and active muscle-force loadings were separately applied on the FE model to simulate the anterior clenching. Stress distributions in two models were compared. RESULTS: The stress distributions of two models were apparently different. In the passive muscle-force model, high stress was mainly distributed in mandibular angle, retromolar trigone, notch and bite point on crown. In the active muscle-force model, high stress was mainly distributed in condylar vertex and neck, mandibular angle, retromolar trigone and bite point on crown. There were some similarities between passive and active muscle loadings. However, large difference existed in condylar region due to the vertices reaction force disparity. CONCLUSION: Closer to actual stressing state of human mandible and temporomandibular joint, the active muscle-force model is a proper biomechanical model for human mandible under anterior clenching.

Bioinspired composites exhibit well-defined microstructures, where anisotropic ceramic particles are assembled and bonded by an organic matrix. However, it is difficult to fabricate these composites where both the ceramic particles and organic matrix work together to unlock toughening mechanisms, such as shear dissipation, particle rotation and interlocking, etc, that lead to stiff, strong, and tough mechanical properties. Here, we produce composites inspired by seashells, made of alumina microplatelets assembled in complex microstructures and that are physically bonded by a small amount of interpenetrated polymer network (IPN) made of polyacrylamide (PAM) and poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM). The fabrication employs magnetically assisted slip-casting to orient the microplatelets as desired, andin situgelation of the IPN, followed by drying. The process was successful after carefully tuning the slip casting and gelation kinetics. Samples with horizontal, vertical, and alternating vertical and horizontal microplatelets orientations were then tested under compression. It was found that the IPN threads bonding the microplatelets acted as sacrificial bonds dissipating energy during the compression. Paired with the alternating microstructure, the IPN significantly enhanced the compressive toughness of the composites by 205% as compared to the composites with horizontal or vertical orientation only, with less than 35% reduction on the stiffness. This study demonstrates that microstructure control and design combined with a flexible and tough matrix can effectively enhance the properties of bioinspired ceramic polymer composites.

The associations of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) with meteorological variables and particulate matter (PM) remain controversial, and limited evidence is available on heat index (HI) and coarse particulate (PM10-2.5). Moreover, temperature and humidity are considered major risk factors but their interaction with PM remains unclear. We combined the distributed lag non-linear and quasi-Poisson models to estimate the non-linear and lagged associations of meteorological variables and PM with HFMD based on reported HFMD during 2015-2019 in Fuzhou, China. The multiplicative term of interaction was used to explore the relationship between HFMD and meteorological variables or PM at different levels of another variable. Stratified analyses were used to identify vulnerable subpopulations. We observed inverted-V-shaped relationships between HFMD and temperature and HI, and the W- and N-shaped for relative humidity (RH) and PM, respectively. Extreme high (i.e., the 95th percentile) temperature, HI and RH increased the HFMD with relative risks (RR) of 4.00 (95% confidence interval, 2.79-5.75), 2.20 (1.71-2.83) and 1.54 (1.35-1.75) referent to the minimum effect value of 10.3 °C, 69.4 and 54.8%, respectively. Higher concentrations of PM rapidly increased the HFMD. Infants under 2 years suffered more from temperature, HI and PM. There were synergistic effects between meteorological variables and PM on HFMD. For instance, the RRs of temperature (30 °C) and RH (40%) on HFMD increased from 3.68 (2.24-6.06) to 6.44 (4.29-9.66) and from 0.45 (0.14-1.47) to 2.15 (0.90-5.12) at low (<25%) and high (>75%) categories of PM2.5, respectively. While the RRs of 70 µg/m3 of PM10 and PM10-2.5 increased from 0.65 (0.32-1.31) to 2.93 (1.63-5.26) and from 0.86 (0.23-3.21) to 3.26 (1.23-8.62) at low and high categories of HI. These findings are essential for the development a prediction and warning systems and prevention and control strategies for HFMD.

This article provides a detailed review of capillary electrophoresis (CE) technology in 2022, summarizing a total of 881 CE technology-related articles searched from ISI Web of Science using the keywords "capillary electrophoresis mass spectrometry" or "capillary isoelectric focusing" or "micellar electrokinetic chromatography" or "capillary electrophoresis" (excluding "capillary electrochromatography""microchip" "microfluidic" "capillary monolithic column"). The review focuses on 16 articles published in Lancet Global Health, ACS Central Science, Microbiome, Trends in Food Science & Technology, TrAC-Trends in Analytical Chemistry, Journal of Pharmaceutical Analysis, Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, Food Hydrocolloids, Science of the Total Environment, and Carbohydrate Polymers with impact factors (IFs) greater than 10.0, and 46 articles published in Analytical Chemistry, Analytica Chimica Acta, Talanta, and Food Chemistry with IFs between 5.0 and 10.0. A comprehensive overview of representative CE works published in Journal of Chromatography A, Electrophoresis, and important Chinese core journals (Peking University) with IFs<5.0 is also provided. Based on IFs, this review introduces representative works on CE to facilitate readers' understanding of important research advances in CE technology over the last year.

Microplastics exposure is a new human health crisis. Although progress in understanding health effects of microplastic exposure has been made, microplastic impacts on absorption of co-exposure toxic pollutants such as arsenic (As), i.e., oral bioavailability, remain unclear. Microplastic ingestion may interfere As biotransformation, gut microbiota, and/or gut metabolites, thereby affecting As oral bioavailability. Here, mice were exposed to arsenate (6 µg As g-1) alone and in combination with polyethylene particles of 30 and 200 µm (PE-30 and PE-200 having surface area of 2.17 × 103 and 3.23 × 102 cm2 g-1) in diet (2, 20, and 200 µg PE g-1) to determine the influence of microplastic co-ingestion on arsenic (As) oral bioavailability. By determining the percentage of cumulative As consumption recovered in urine of mice, As oral bioavailability increased significantly (P < 0.05) from 72.0 ± 5.41% to 89.7 ± 6.33% with PE-30 at 200 µg PE g-1 rather than with PE-200 at 2, 20, and 200 µg PE g-1 (58.5 ± 19.0%, 72.3 ± 6.28%, and 69.2 ± 17.8%). Both PE-30 and PE-200 exerted limited effects on pre- and post-absorption As biotransformation in intestinal content, intestine tissue, feces, and urine. They affected gut microbiota dose-dependently, with lower exposure concentrations having more pronounced effects. Consistent with the PE-30-specific As oral bioavailability increase, PE exposure significantly up-regulated gut metabolite expression, and PE-30 exerted greater effects than PE-200, suggesting that gut metabolite changes may contribute to As oral bioavailability increase. This was supported by 1.58-4.07-fold higher As solubility in the presence of up-regulated metabolites (e.g., amino acid derivatives, organic acids, and pyrimidines and purines) in the intestinal tract assessed by an in vitro assay. Our results suggested that microplastic exposure especially smaller particles may exacerbate the oral bioavailability of As, providing a new angle to understand health effects of microplastics.

Objective: Gastric cancer is one of the most lethal malignancies in the world. However, the current research on the diagnosis and treatment of nano-ultrasound contrast agents in the field of tumor is mostly focused on breast cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, liver cancer, etc. Due to the interference of gas in the stomach, there is no report on the treatment of gastric cancer. Herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase/ganciclovir (HSV-TK/GCV) therapy system is the most mature tumor suicide gene in cancer treatment. At the same time, in order to improve its safety and efficiency, we designed a gastric tumor targeted ultrasound-triggered phase-transition nano ultrasound contrast agent PFH/AGM-CBA/HSV-TK/Liposome (PAHL)-Affibody complex. Methods: In our study, guanidinylated SS-PAAs polymer poly(agmatine/N, N'-cystamine-bis-acrylamide) (AGM-CBA) was used as a nuclear localization vector of suicide gene to form a polyplex, perfluorohexane (PFH) was used as ultrasound contrast agent, liposomes were used to encapsulate perfluorohexane droplets and the polyplexes of AGM-CBA/HSV-TK, and affibody molecules were conjugated to the prepared PAHL in order to obtain a specific targeting affinity to human epidermal growth factor receptor type 2 (ErbB2) at gastric cancer cells. With the aid of ultrasound targeted microbubble destruction technology and the nuclear localization effect of AGM-CBA vector, the transfection efficiency of the suicide gene in gastric cancer cells was significantly increased, leading to significant apoptosis of gastric cancer cells. Results: It was shown that PAHL-Affibody complex was nearly spherical with an average diameter of 560 ± 28.9 nm, having higher and specific affinity to ErbB2 (+) gastric cells. In vitro experiments further confirmed that PAHL could target gastric cancer cells expressing ErbB2. In a contrast-enhanced ultrasound scanning study, the prepared ultrasound-triggered phase-change nano-ultrasound contrast agent, PAHL, showed improved ultrasound enhancement effects. With the application of the low-frequency ultrasound, the gene transfection efficiency of PAHL was significantly improved,  thereby inducing significant apoptosis in gastric cancer cells. Conclusion: This study constructs PFH/AGM-CBA/HSV-TK/Liposome-Affibody nano ultrasound contrast agent, which provides new ideas for the treatment strategy of ErbB2-positive gastric cancer and provides some preliminary experimental basis for its inhibitory effect.

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is the major cause of severe hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). Compared to other HFMD pathogens, like coxsackievirus A16 (CVA16), EV71 can invade the central nervous system and cause permanent damage. At present, there are no available antivirals against EV71 for clinical treatment. Herein, multiple Chinese botanical drugs were collected, and 47 types of botanical extracts were extracted using aqueous solutions and organic solvents. Based on the cytopathic effect inhibition assay, petroleum ether extract of Tournefortia sibirica L. (PE-TS) demonstrated 97.25% and 94.75% inhibition rates for EV71 infection (at 250 µg/ml) and CVA16 infection (at 125 µg/ml), respectively, with low cytotoxicity. Preliminary mechanistic studies showed that PE-TS inhibits replication of EV71 genomic RNA and synthesis of the EV71 protein. The released extracellular EV71 progeny virus titer decreased by 3.75 lg under PE-TS treatment. Furthermore, using a newborn mouse model, PE-TS treatment protected 70% and 66.7% of mice from lethal dose EV71 intracranial challenge via administration of intraperitoneal injection at 0.4 mg/g and direct lavage at 0.8 mg/g, respectively. The chemical constituents of the PE-TS were analyzed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS), and a total of 60 compounds were identified. Compound-target network analysis and molecular docking implied potential bioactive compounds and their protein targets against EV71 associated pathology. The present study identified antiviral effects of PE-TS against EV71/CVA16 infection in vitro and EV71 infection in vivo, providing a potential antiviral botanical drug extract candidate for HFMD drug development.

Background: Skin cancer has been the leading type of cancer worldwide. Melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers are now the most common types of skin cancer that have been reached to epidemic proportion. Based on the rapid prevalence of skin cancers, and lack of efficient drug delivery systems, it is essential to surge the possible ways to prevent or cure the disease. Aim of review: Although surgical modalities and therapies have been made great progress in recent years, however, there is still an urgent need to alleviate its increased burden. Hence, understanding the precise pathophysiological signaling mechanisms and all other factors of such skin insults will be beneficial for the development of more efficient therapies. Key scientific concepts of review: In this review, we explained new understandings about onset and development of skin cancer and described its management via polymeric micro/nano carriers-based therapies, highlighting the current key bottlenecks and future prospective in this field. In therapeutic drug/gene delivery approaches, polymeric carriers-based system is the most promising strategy. This review discusses that how polymers have successfully been exploited for development of micro/nanosized systems for efficient delivery of anticancer genes and drugs overcoming all the barriers and limitations associated with available conventional therapies. In addition to drug/gene delivery, intelligent polymeric nanocarriers platforms have also been established for combination anticancer therapies including photodynamic and photothermal, and for theranostic applications. This portfolio of latest approaches could promote the blooming growth of research and their clinical availability.

Radiation therapy is a common treatment for head and neck cancers. However, because of the presence of nerve structures (brain stem, spinal cord, and brachial plexus), salivary glands (SGs), mucous membranes, and swallowing muscles in the head and neck regions, radiotherapy inevitably causes damage to these normal tissues. Among them, SG injury is a serious adverse event, and its clinical manifestations include changes in taste, difficulty chewing and swallowing, oral infections, and dental caries. These clinical symptoms seriously reduce a patient's quality of life. Therefore, it is important to clarify the mechanism of SG injury caused by radiotherapy. Although the mechanism of radiation-induced SG injury has not yet been determined, recent studies have shown that the mechanisms of calcium signaling, microvascular injury, cellular senescence, and apoptosis are closely related to oxidative stress. In this article, we review the mechanism by which radiotherapy causes oxidative stress and damages the SGs. In addition, we discuss effective methods to prevent and treat radiation-induced SG damage.

Bio-absorbable Zn alloys have been attractive replacements for the traditionally permanent implants due to their reasonable mechanical strength and elongation, degradation rate, and biocompatibility. The hybridization addition of Mg and Ag elements could greatly improve the mechanical properties and antibacterial ability of Zn, respectively. In the present paper, in vivo biocompatibility for the Zn-0.05Mg-(0, 0.5, 1 wt%) Ag implants in New Zealand rabbit was qualitatively evaluated during the implantation periods of 4, 12, and 24 weeks. The blood serum biochemical parameters and in vivo integrity of the implants in the live rabbits were monitored by using clinical chemistry analyzing and X-ray radiographic imaging techniques during the implantation process, respectively. There is no great difference in the serum biochemical indicator between the implanted rabbits and the control group. Especially the levels of serum Zn and serum Mg normalize after implantation of 24 weeks. The interfacial adherence between the implants and newly formed bones, and the histopathological morphology of heart, liver, and kidney were observed morphologically under the microscope. The new bones formed and grew surrounding the implants after 12 weeks' post-operation, which were well joined with the original cortical bones after post-implantation of 24 weeks. The heart, liver and kidney were not negatively influenced as evidenced from the serum biochemical indicators and morphologies of the tissues. Zn-0.05Mg-(0, 0.5, 1 wt%) Ag alloys are proved to be in vivo biocompatible and potential candidates for the biodegradable medical implants.

OBJECTIVE: To study the purification technology of TGP from Paeonia lactiflora by ethanol gradient combined with resin processing and determine the optimum technological conditions and parameters. METHODS: Using orthogonal test design to investigate the effect of ethanol gradient treatment on the content of TGP. Moreover, from the static and dynamic adsorption nine types of macroporous adsorption resin were evaluated to select the best resin type and the optimum separation and purification conditions. RESULTS: The best technology of Paeonia lactiflora ethanol precipitation was concentration of 1 g crude drug/mL precipitated by 95% ethanol to 90% concentration and then frozen for 10 h. HPD300 resin was the optimal model for the separation and purification of TGP from Paeonia lactiflora, with 5BV of 50% ethanol eluenting and the ratio of herb to resin was 2:1 . CONCLUSION: This technology is suitable and advanced for industry production and it is simple and convenient, rapid, accurate, etc.

RESUMO

Multi-arm star poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) polymers have a number of advantages over linear PEG polymers when used as carriers for drug delivery and controlled release. For instance, they have more terminals that can be modified to form multi-functional delivery systems with significantly increased drug loading. They can form micelles with higher stability and lower critical micelle concentration (CMC), which helps to improve the blood circulation and reduce the unfavorable burst drug release. Moreover, star PEG polymers can form three-dimensional hydrogels with controllable size and adjustable functions through cross-linking. Indeed, these unique advantages of star PEG polymers have promoted investigations on star PEG-based drug delivery systems. Herein, for the first time, we carefully reviewed the advances on the research and development of star PEG polymers, especially the 4-, 6- and 8-armed star PEG polymers, in delivery and controlled release of a series of bioactive agents, including both small molecules and biomacromolecules. Opportunities and challenges for successful translation of star PEG-based drug formulations into clinical use were also discussed.

Chromosomes in vertebrates are protected at both ends by telomere DNA composed of tandem (TTAGGG)n repeats. DNA replication produces a blunt-ended leading strand telomere and a lagging strand telomere carrying a single-stranded G-rich overhang at its end. The G-rich strand can form G-quadruplex structure in the presence of K+ or Na+. At present, it is not clear whether quadruplex can form in the double-stranded telomere region where the two complementary strands are constrained in close vicinity and quadruplex formation, if possible, has to compete with the formation of the conventional Watson-Crick duplex. In this work, we studied quadruplex formation in oligonucleotides and double-stranded DNA containing both the G- and C-rich sequences to better mimic the in vivo situation. Under such competitive condition only duplex was observed in dilute solution containing physiological concentration of K+. However, quadruplex could preferentially form and dominate over duplex structure under molecular crowding condition created by PEG as a result of significant quadruplex stabilization and duplex destabilization. This observation suggests quadruplex may potentially form or be induced at the blunt end of a telomere, which may present a possible alternative form of structures at telomere ends.

Skin wound dressing materials, which can accelerate wound healing and have the synthetic advantages of simplicity, environmental safety, and resource abundance, are becoming a hot topic of research now. Following such a research trend, we prepared novel decanoic acid functionalized chitosan (CSDA) with good solubility by acylation via a facile one-step method. FTIR, 1H NMR, and UV-Vis results demonstrated that alkyl chains were successfully grafted onto C2 positions of chitosan (CS) skeleton through acylation. XRD patterns implied that the crystallinity of CSDA greatly declined due to the introduction of alkyl moieties, favorable for improving water solubility. Conductometric titration results showed that the degrees of substitution of CSDA, CSDA1, and CSDA2 were 41.42, 26.12, and 23.17%, respectively. MTT assay and hemolysis experiments illustrated that all the CSDA samples tested in this work possessed good hemocompatibility (hemolysis rate < 2%) and excellent cytocompatibility (relative cell viability >75%) toward L929 cells. Moreover, CSDA-soaked gauze dressings and full-thickness excisional wound models were employed to estimate the feasibility of CSDA as wound dressing material, and the results displayed that CSDA with the degree of substitution of 41.42% could enhance the wound healing rate to 100% on day 16. Altogether, CSDA might be potential material used as wound dressing.

PURPOSE: To investigate the symmetry of nasal maxillary complex in the three-dimensional directions of patients with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate(UCLP) at the stage of mixed dentition. METHODS: Craniofacial cone-beam CT(CBCT) images of 20 UCLP patients at the stage of mixed dentition were selected. Three-dimensional reconstruction of bone tissue was carried out by Mimics software, nasal root point and 32 markers with the same name of the healthy side and the cleft side of the nasal maxillary complex were traced, three-dimensional reference planes were set up, then the distances between the points to the three-dimensional planes were measured respectively. SPSS 22.0 software package was used to analyze the data. RESULTS: In the horizontal direction, compared with the non-cleft side, the width of the cleft side of the maxilla at INM and SPC was smaller, the width of maxilla at LPA and SPr was larger, the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). In the sagittal direction, compared with the non-cleft side, the depth of LPA, Maz and SPr at the cleft side was larger, the depth of SPM and SPC was smaller, the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).In the vertical direction, the positions of LPA, INM and Maz at the cleft side was lower than the non-cleft side, SPC and SPr were higher, the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05). The remaining points had no significant difference (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The nasal maxillary complex of UCLP patients at the stage of mixed dentition is asymmetric in three directions. The asymmetric locations were mainly located in the nasal cavity and alveolar bone. No obvious asymmetry is found in the orbital region and the maxillary region far from the cleft.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Magnetically controlled capsule endoscopy (MCE) is a novel technique for which there is no agreed gastric preparation. We aimed to determine an optimal standardized gastric preparation regimen. METHODS: 120 patients referred for MCE were randomly assigned to gastric preparation with either water alone (A), water with simethicone (B) or water, simethicone and pronase (C). Image quality was assessed using cleanliness and visualization scores, higher scores equating to better image quality. RESULTS: The total cleanliness scores were (mean±SD) 15.83±2.41 (A), 21.35±1.23 (B), and 20.82±1.90 (C). The total visualization scores (mean±SD) were 10.75±2.02 (A), 15.20±1.32 (B), and 15.08±1.86 (C). While the image quality of the whole stomach in groups B and C were significantly better than group A (P<0.0001), there was no statistical difference between group B and C (P>0.05). MCE detected positive findings in 21 (52.5%), 27 (67.5%) and 21 (53.8%) patients in group A, B and C respectively, with no significant difference between groups (P>0.5). CONCLUSIONS: Simethicone swallowed with water prior to MCE produced the optimal gastric mucosal image quality. The addition of pronase had no demonstrable additional benefit.
