RESUMO

Cr(VI) pollution is a growing problem that causes the deterioration of the environment and human health. We report the development of an effective adsorbent for the removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater. N-doped cellulose-based hydrothermal carbon (N-CHC) was prepared via a two-step hydrothermal method. The morphology and structural properties of N-CHC were investigated by various techniques. N-CHC has many O and N groups, which are suitable for Cr(VI) adsorption and reduction. Intermittent adsorption experiments showed that N-CHC had an adsorption capacity of 151.05 mg/g for Cr(VI) at pH 2, indicating excellent adsorption performance. Kinetic and thermodynamic analyses indicates that the adsorption of Cr(VI) on N-CHC follows a monolayer uniform adsorption process, which is a spontaneous endothermic process dominated by chemical interaction and limited by diffusion within particles. In a multi-ion system (Pb2+, Cd2+, Mn7+, Cl-, and SO42-), the selectivity of N-CHC toward Cr(VI) was 82.62%. In addition, N-CHC demonstrated excellent reuse performance over seven adsorption-desorption cycles; the Cr(VI) removal rate of N-CHC in 5-20 mg/L wastewater was >99.87%, confirming the potential of N-CHC for large-scale applications. CN/C-OR, pyridinic-N, and pyrrolic-N were found to play a critical role in the adsorption process. This study provides a new technology for Cr(VI) pollution control that could be utilized in large-scale production and other environmental applications.

RESUMO

To investigate the association between store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) during hypoxia, this study determined the changes of transient receptor potential canonical 1 (TRPC1) and Orai1, two candidate proteins for store-operated Ca2+ (SOC) channels and their gate regulator, stromal interaction molecule 1 (STIM1), in a hypoxic environment and their relationship with ROS in pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells (PASMCs). Exposure to hypoxia caused a transient Ca2+ spike and subsequent Ca2+ plateau of SOCE to be intensified in PASMCs when TRPC1, STIM1, and Orai1 were upregulated. SOCE in cells transfected with specific short hairpin RNA (shRNA) constructs was almost completely eliminated by the knockdown of TRPC1, STIM1, or Orai1 alone and was no longer affected by hypoxia exposure. Hypoxia-induced SOCE enhancement was further strengthened by PEG-SOD but was attenuated by PEG-catalase, with correlated changes to intracellular hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) levels and protein levels of TRPC1, STIM1, and Orai1. Exogenous H2O2 could mimic alterations of the interactions of STIM1 with TRPC1 and Orai1 in hypoxic cells. These findings suggest that TRPC1, STIM1, and Orai1 are essential for the initiation of SOCE in PASMCs. Hypoxia-induced ROS promoted the expression and interaction of the SOC channel molecules and their gate regulator via their converted product, H2O2.

RESUMO

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic led to a sharp increase in disposable surgical mask usage. Discarded masks can release microplastic and cause environmental pollution. Since masks have become a daily necessity for protection against virus infections, it is necessary to review the usage and disposal of masks during the pandemic for future management. In this study, we constructed a dynamic model by introducing related parameters to estimate daily mask usage in 214 countries from January 22, 2020 to July 31, 2022. And we validated the accuracy of our model by establishing a dataset based on published survey data. Our results show that the cumulative mask usage has reached 800 billion worldwide, and the microplastics released from discarded masks due to mismanagement account for 3.27% of global marine microplastic emissions in this period. Furthermore, we illustrated the response relationship between mask usage and the infection rates. We found a marginally significant negative correlation existing between the mean daily per capita mask usage and the rate of cumulative confirmed cases within the range of 25% to 50%. This indicates that if the rate reaches the specified threshold, the preventive effect of masks may become evident.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: As Alzheimer's disease (AD) might provoke certain nerve disorders, patients with AD can acquire sensorimotor adaptation problems, and thus the acoustic characteristics of the speech they produce may differ from those of healthy subjects. This study aimed to (1) extract acoustic characteristics (relating to articulatory gestures) potentially useful for detecting AD and (2) examine whether these characteristics could help identify AD patients. METHODS: A total of 50 individuals participated in the study, including the AD group (17 cases), the Neurologically Healthy (NH) group (13 cases), the Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) group (11 cases), and the Vascular Cognitive Impairment (VCI) group (9 cases). Voice samples involving three vowels (/i/, /a/, and /u/) and six consonants (/p/, /pÊ°/, /t/, /tÊ°/, /k/, and /kÊ°/) were collected using a digital recorder (TASCAM DR40X). Microphone-to-mouth distance was maintained at 30 cm. Acoustic measures included F0, jitter, shimmer, HNR, F1, F2, F3, and VOT. RESULTS: One-way ANOVA tests were carried out to compare the acoustic measures among the four groups. F3 of vowel /u/, F2 bandwidth of vowel /a/, VOT of consonant /t/, and male participants' F0 of three vowels (/a/, /i/, and /u/) were found significantly different, while no significant differences were found in the other measures. CONCLUSION: Some acoustic characteristics can indeed help detect AD patients.

RESUMO

Particulate plastics (<5 mm), including macroplastics (1 µm to 5 mm), microplastics (100 nm to 1 µm) and nanoplastics (<100 nm), have become a global environmental problem due to their widespread occurrence, distribution and ecosystem risk. Although numerous studies on particulate plastics have been conducted in aquatic systems, investigations in the soil ecosystem are lacking. Soil is the main storage place of particulate plastics, conferring significant impacts on plant growth and development. The impact of particulate plastics on plants is directly related to the safety of agricultural products. This review comprehensively examines the pollution characteristics and exposure pathways of particulate plastics in agricultural soils, highlighting plastic uptake process, and mechanisms in plants, and effects of particulate plastics, biodegradable particulate plastics and combined pollution of plastics with other environmental pollutants on plant performances. This review identifies a number of future research prospects including the development of accurate quantitative methods for plastic analysis in soil and plant samples, understanding the environmental behaviors of conventional and biodegradable particulate plastics in the presence and absence of other environmental pollutants, unravelling the fate of particulate plastics in plants, phyto-toxicity and molecular regulatory mechanisms of particultate plastics, and developing best management practices for the production of safe agricultural products in plastic-contaminated soils.

RESUMO

The long-term contamination of soil by microplastics may pose risks that are often still not well understood, and the ecological effects of microplastics are mainly dependent on their environmental behavior in environments. This study used saturated quartz sand as a solid porous medium to study the migration and influencing factors of 40-48 µm polyethylene (PE) particles in saturated porous media. The breakthrough curves at different injection concentrations (0.3, 0.4, 0.5 mg/L), flow rates (1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 ml/L), porous medium particle sizes (1-2, 2-4 mm), ionic strengths (0, 0.01, 0.05 mol/L) and concentrations of fulvic acid (FA) (0, 5, 10 mg/L) were compared and analyzed. The Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory was used to more accurately explain relevant transport behaviors. The results showed that the input concentration, flow rate, and particle size can affect the migration of PE particles individually or in combination. As ionic strength increased, the repulsion between microplastics and quartz sand gradually disappeared according to DLVO theory, and their attraction gradually strengthened. As a result, fewer microplastics could penetrate the sand column and reach the water body. With the continuous addition of FA, the repulsive energy between microplastics and quartz sand rose from DLVO theory, and the migration ability of microplastics initially increased before becoming stable because of the effect of straining. In all cases, the migration ability of PE was low (C/C0 < 0.35), and most PE particles remained in the porous media during the whole experimental periods. This study provides new insights of understanding the migration of microplastics in environment.

RESUMO

In the current study, we conducted a field experiment using the test plant, Brassica chinesis L. (pak choi), to investigate the effect of sugarcane bagasse-derived biochar on the bioavailability of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu) and lead (Pb), and the health of soil microbiota in a contaminated soil. Biochar application significantly (P < 0.05) increased pak choi yield. Bioavailability of heavy metals to plant shoots and roots decreased with increasing biochar application rates (at 0, 1.5, 2.25 and 3.0 t ha-1). Sequential extraction of the biochar-treated and -untreated soil revealed that exchangeable Cd reduced whereas organically-bound fraction increased with increasing biochar rate. The labile fractions of Cu and Pb decreased, but the residual fraction increased in biochar-treated soils compared to the control. Urease, catalase and invertase activities, and the populations of bacteria and actinomycetes were significantly enhanced, whereas fungi population declined in biochar-treated soils. This study highlights that sugarcane bagasse biochar has the potential to support the remediation of soils contaminated with heavy metals, and as such can improve the yield and quality of agricultural crops.
