Climate warming has profoundly altered the status of permafrost and has caused extensive permafrost degradation in the Northern Hemisphere. However, long-term observations investigating the hydrological dynamics of permafrost and its ecological effects on plant growth are lacking. Previous studies have reported tree-ring stable hydrogen isotope ratios of lignin methoxy groups (δ2HLM) as an archive of hydrological signals. This study sampled tree-ring cores from a Larix gmelinii forest in Nanwenghe Forest Park, Northeastern China, and separately measured the tree-ring δ2HLM for earlywood and latewood from 1900 to 2020. Earlywood and latewood δ2HLM values, as well as the difference between them, showed no significant long-term trend from 1900 to 1987; however, they both exhibited significant increasing trends since 1988 at rates of 2.6 ‰ and 4.9 ‰ per decade, respectively. This variance changes the magnitude of the difference between the two chronologies and can be explained by the shift in source water δ2H values during tree growth. Based on a structural equation model analysis, when the influence of permafrost melting weakened due to permafrost degradation, the growing season temperature was better recorded in latewood δ2HLM through the effects of precipitation δ2H from July to September. Based on the environmental response of tree-ring δ2HLM in the permafrost region, permafrost degradation influences the source water δ2H values of trees, thereby affecting the expression of temperature signals in tree-ring δ2HLM. The novel results in this study provide a new perspective on permafrost degradation based on the dynamic responses of tree-ring δ2HLM to source water δ2H during permafrost degradation.

Soil contamination is one of the main threats to ecosystem health and sustainability. Yet little is known about the extent to which soil contaminants differ between urban greenspaces and natural ecosystems. Here we show that urban greenspaces and adjacent natural areas (i.e., natural/semi-natural ecosystems) shared similar levels of multiple soil contaminants (metal(loid)s, pesticides, microplastics, and antibiotic resistance genes) across the globe. We reveal that human influence explained many forms of soil contamination worldwide. Socio-economic factors were integral to explaining the occurrence of soil contaminants worldwide. We further show that increased levels of multiple soil contaminants were linked with changes in microbial traits including genes associated with environmental stress resistance, nutrient cycling, and pathogenesis. Taken together, our work demonstrates that human-driven soil contamination in nearby natural areas mirrors that in urban greenspaces globally, and highlights that soil contaminants have the potential to cause dire consequences for ecosystem sustainability and human wellbeing.

The site of Zhengzhou Shang City (ca. 1509-1315 cal. BC) was the capital of the early Shang Dynasty in China. Archaeological excavations have unearthed a ditch containing approximately one hundred unusual dead human skulls in the rammed-earth foundations of the palace area. The identity and origin of the skulls have long been disputed. In this work, strontium, carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analyses were carried out on 11 human skulls and 1 tooth from the ditch, as well as on 11 human bones, 11 human teeth from the ordinary tombs and 10 pig teeth from the Zhengzhou Shang City site. We determined that, in Zhengzhou Shang City, the local strontium isotope ratio ranges from 0.711606 to 0.711884, and ordinary inhabitants consumed mainly C4 plants supplemented by C3 plants. Moreover, humans buried in the ditch have 87Sr/86Sr values from 0.711335 to 0.711741 and consumed only C4 plants. Combining the isotopic data with the archaeological and cultural context, it is concluded that the unusual human skulls in the ditch are most likely those of prisoners of war captured by the central forces conquering the Xiaomintun area of Anyang in the early Shang Dynasty. The results provide valuable insight into the history of violence and military warfare in the early Chinese dynasty.

OBJECTIVE: To review and analyze the clinical and imaging features of central giant cell granuloma patients and to review the relevant literatures for the diagnosis and clinical manifestation of central giant cell granuloma. METHODS: Seven cases of central giant cell granuloma were retrospectively selected for the study, all of which were confirmed by pathology and had relevant imaging investigations. All seven cases had undergone CT scan, three cases had undergone MRI scan. Detailed clinical features were compared along with the imaging findings and analysis was done on the basis of their presentation and imaging features. RESULTS: The clinical features, radiologic features were varied according to the site of the lesion. CT features include unevenly dense expansile mass causing bone destruction and cortical thinning. While MRI features with low to iso-intensity in T1- and T2 weighted images. There may be presence of cystic degeneration, hemorrhage or hemosiderin deposits or osteoid formation, which can cause T1 and T2 signal changes. On contrast study, the lesion doesn't enhance but periphery may enhance mildly. CONCLUSION: Unevenly dense expansile mass with bone destruction and cortical thinning with low to iso-intensity in T1 weighted and T2 weighted images and mildly enhance peripherally, Central giant cell granuloma should be considered.

The primary hydrogen (H) source for all organic compounds in the biosphere is from water, and then participates in biogeochemical cycles through photosynthesis and plant physiological metabolism. As a new proxy of paleoclimate and paleoenvironment, stable hydrogen isotope ratios in wood lignin methoxyl groups (δ2HLM) show great advantages in the studies of paleoclimatic change and have been used to reconstruct precipitation stable hydrogen isotope ratios and paleoclimate signals in many regions. Based on the lignin application mechanism and analysis method of δ2HLM, we evaluated the stability and effectiveness of δ2HLM-measurement method from lignin content and lignin monomer composition, and expounded the tree lignin methoxyl groups' stable isotope proxies of current research outcomes. In the middle latitudes, the tree-ring δ2HLM had great potential in recording temperature signals and precipitation stable hydrogen isotope ratios. However, the study of tree-ring δ2HLM was still in its infancy as evidenced by following reasons: 1) The study area was limited to the middle latitude of the northern hemisphere, and the study subjects were limited to conifer species; 2) To compensate for the limitation of hydrogen isotopic records of nitrocellulose, high resolution tree-ring δ2HLM would be studied; 3) The potential of tree-ring δ2HLM utilization in plant physiology and forest ecology remained to be exploited.

Stable isotopes in wood lignin methoxyl groups (δ2HLM and δ13CLM values) have been suggested as valuable complementary paleoclimate proxies. In permafrost forests, tree growth is influenced by multiple factors, however temperature appears to have the strongest impact on tree growth and, therefore, on carbon cycling. To test whether δ2HLM and δ13CLM values of trees from permafrost regions might record climate parameters, two dominant tree species (Larix gmelinii, larch, and Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica, pine) collected from a permafrost forest in China's Greater Hinggan Mountains, were investigated. The two tree species larch and pine covered time spans of 1940 to 2013 and 1870 to 2013, respectively. Results showed significant correlations of pine and larch δ2HLM values and larch δ13CLM values with temperatures and in particular with the mean temperature of the growing season from April to August. However, only weak correlations of δ2HLM and δ13CLM values with moisture conditions, such as precipitation amount and relative humidity were observed. In addition, species specificity in the climate response was most obvious for δ13CLM values. Compared to a temperature reconstruction based on tree ring width, pine δ2HLM-based reconstruction showed strongest spatial correlations with regional temperature. Therefore, δ2HLM values might be a promising proxy to reconstruct growing-season temperatures in permafrost regions.
