RESUMO

A biochar-assisted anaerobic membrane bioreactor (BC-AnMBR) was conducted to evaluate the performance in treating swine wastewater with different organic loading rates (OLR) ranging from 0.38 to 1.13 kg-COD/(m3.d). Results indicated that adding spent coffee grounds biochar (SCG-BC) improved the organic removal efficiency compared to the conventional AnMBR, with an overall COD removal rate of > 95.01%. Meanwhile, methane production of up to 0.22 LCH4/gCOD with an improvement of 45.45% was achieved under a high OLR of 1.13 kg-COD/(m3.d). Furthermore, the transmembrane pressure (TMP) in the BC-AnMBR system was stable at 4.5 kPa, and no irreversible membrane fouling occurred within 125 days. Microbial community analysis revealed that the addition of SCG-BC increased the relative abundance of autotrophic methanogenic archaea, particularly Methanosarcina (from 0.11% to 11.16%) and Methanothrix (from 16.34% to 24.05%). More importantly, Desulfobacterota and Firmicutes phylum with direct interspecific electron transfer (DIET) capabilities were also enriched with autotrophic methanogens. Analysis of the electron transfer pathway showed that the concentration of c-type cytochromes increased by 38.60% in the presence of SCG-BC, and thus facilitated the establishment of DIET and maintained high activity of the electron transfer system even at high OLR. In short, the BC-AnMBR system performs well under various OLR conditions and is stable in the recovery energy system for swine wastewater.

RESUMO

A positively charged nanofiltration (NF) membrane is known to have exceptional separation performance for bivalent cations in aqueous solutions. In this study, a new NF activity layer was created using interfacial polymerization (IP) on a polysulfone (PSF) ultrafiltration substrate membrane. The aqueous phase combines the two monomers of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and phthalimide, while successfully producing a highly efficient and accurate NF membrane. The conditions of the NF membrane were studied and further optimized. The aqueous phase crosslinking process enhances the polymer interaction, resulting in an excellent pure water flux of 7.09 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1 under a pressure of 0.4 MPa. Additionally, the NF membrane shows excellent selectivity toward inorganic salts, with a rejection order of MgCl2 > CaCl2 > MgSO4 > Na2SO4 > NaCl. Under optimal conditions, the membrane was able to reject up to 94.33% of 1,000 mg/L of MgCl2 solution at an ambient temperature. Further to assess the antifouling properties of the membrane with bovine serum albumin (BSA), the flux recovery ratio (FRR) was calculated to be 81.64% after 6 h of filtration. This paper presents an efficient and straightforward approach to customize a positively charged NF membrane. We achieve this by introducing phthalimide, which enhances the membrane's stability and rejection performance.

RESUMO

Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting technology, allowing rapid prototyping and personalized customization, has received much attention in recent years, while regenerated silk fibroin (RSF) has also been widely investigated for its excellent biocompatibility, processibility, and comprehensive mechanical properties. However, due to the difficulty in curing RSF aqueous solution and the tendency of conformational transition of RSF chains under shearing, it is rather complicated to fabricate RSF-based materials with high mechanical strength through extrusion bioprinting. To solve this problem, a printable hydrogel with thixotropy was prepared from regenerated silk fibroin with high-molecular-weight (HMWRSF) combined with a small amount of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) in urea containing aqueous solution. It was found that the introduction of urea could not only vary the solid content of the hydrogel to benefit the mechanical properties of the 3D-bioprinted pre-cured hydrogels or 3D-bioprinted sponges, but also expand the "printable window" of this system. Indeed, the printability and rheological properties could be modulated by varying the solid content, the heating time, the urea/HMWRSF weight ratio, etc. Moreover, the microstructure of nanospheres stacked in these lyophilized 3D-bioprinted sponges was interesting to observe, which indicated the existence of microhydrogels and both "the reversible network" and "the irreversible network" in this HMWRSF-based pre-cured hydrogel. Like other HMWRSF materials fabricated in other ways, these 3D-bioprinted HMWRSF-based sponges exhibited good cytocompatibility for dental pulp mesenchymal stem cells. This work may inspire the design of functional HMWRSF-based materials by regulating the relationship between structure and properties.

RESUMO

Fluoride is an essential micronutrient for humans. Nonetheless, when the amount of fluoride ion is greater than required, it will cause skeletal fluorosis and dental fluorosis to threaten human health. In this paper, a series of sodium alginate (SA)-based foam materials are prepared by freeze-drying technique and anchored with the nano-activated alumina (nAl2O3) in the SA to obtain a novel adsorbent of SA-nAl2O3 foam used for fluoride ions removal. The SA-nAl2O3 foam morphology was further explored and confirmed that nAl2O3 existed stably in the SA. The adsorption results showed that the maximal fluoride ion adsorption capacity was 5.09 mg/g with 20 mg/L fluorine solutions at a pH of 3. The adsorption isotherm fitted adequately to the Langmuir isotherm model, which demonstrated that the adsorption process is closer to monolayer adsorption. The adsorption kinetics behavior of SA-nAl2O3 foam was described by a pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption process occurred by chemisorption. Adsorption thermodynamics analysis emphasized that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The main mechanism of the foam is ion exchange. The SA-nAl2O3 foam exhibited excellent regeneration performance and stability after three cycles.

RESUMO

Fluorine is one of the essential trace elements for human life activities, but excessive intake of fluoride poses a great risk to people's health. In this paper, a series of mixed matrix membrane (MMM)-based polysulfone for removing fluoride were prepared by phase inversion, and their properties, adsorption capacity, adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics of fluoride ions, and mechanism were all investigated. The results confirmed that the MMM contained a large number of hydroxyl and aluminum functional groups due to resin being added. The MMM exhibited the best fluorine ion adsorption capacity of 2.502 mg/g at a pH of 6 with the initial concentration of 6 mg/L. As well, adsorption kinetics of fluorine ion on MMM followed the pseudo-second-order model, while the adsorption behavior of fluorine ion on MMM was well simulated by the Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption capacity of MMM remained stable after six cycles and the regeneration efficiency was still above 80%, resulting in a long-term stability adequate for fluorine ion removal. Complexation and ion exchange played a key role in the fluorine ion adsorption of MMM. These results indicated the MMM as novel type of absorbent had an excellent capacity for removing fluoride.

RESUMO

Polydopamine (PDA), which is biodegradable and is derived from naturally occurring products, can be employed as an electrode material, wherein controllable partial oxidization plays a key role in balancing the proportion of redox-active carbonyl groups and the structural stability and conductivity. Unexpectedly, the optimized PDA derivative endows lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) or sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) with superior electrochemical performances, including high capacities (1818 mAh g(-1) for LIBs and 500 mAh g(-1) for SIBs) and good stable cyclabilities (93 % capacity retention after 580 cycles for LIBs; 100 % capacity retention after 1024 cycles for SIBs), which are much better than those of their counterparts with conventional binders.

RESUMO

Purpose: The chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin (DOX) is limited by its cardiotoxicity, posing challenges in its application for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This study aims to explore the efficacy of polydopamine/Au nanoparticles loaded with DOX for chemotherapy and photothermal therapy in NSCLC to achieve enhanced efficacy and reduced toxicity. Methods: Hollow polydopamine (HPDA)/Au@DOX was synthesized via polydopamine chemical binding sacrificial template method. Morphology was characterized using transmission electron microscopy, particle size and potential were determined using dynamic light scattering, and photothermal conversion efficiency was assessed using near-infrared (NIR) thermal imaging. Drug loading rate and in vitro drug release were investigated. In vitro, anti-tumor experiments were conducted using CCK-8 assay, flow cytometry, and live/dead cell staining to evaluate the cytotoxicity of HPDA/Au@DOX on A549 cells. Uptake of HPDA/Au@DOX by A549 cells was detected using the intrinsic fluorescence of DOX. The in vivo anti-metastasis and anti-tumor effects of HPDA/Au@DOX were explored in mouse lung metastasis and subcutaneous tumor models, respectively. Results: HPDA/Au@DOX with a particle size of (164.26±3.25) nm, a drug loading rate of 36.31%, and an encapsulation efficiency of 90.78% was successfully prepared. Under 808 nm laser irradiation, HPDA/Au@DOX accelerated DOX release and enhanced uptake by A549 cells. In vitro photothermal performance assessment showed excellent photothermal conversion capability and stability of HPDA/Au@DOX under NIR laser irradiation. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that the photothermal-chemotherapy combination group (HPDA/Au@DOX+NIR) exhibited stronger anti-metastatic and anti-tumor activities compared to the monotherapy group (DOX). Conclusion: HPDA/Au@DOX nanosystem demonstrated excellent photothermal effect, inhibiting the growth and metastasis of A549 cells. This nanosystem achieves the combined effect of chemotherapy and photothermal, making it promising for NSCLC treatment.

RESUMO

Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) hold significant promise for wastewater treatment, yet the persistent challenge of membrane fouling impedes their practical application. One promising solution lies in the synergy between microalgae and bacteria, offering efficient nutrient removal, reduced energy consumption, and potential mitigation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) concentrations. Inoculating microalgae presents a promising avenue to address membrane fouling in MBRs. This review marks the first exploration of utilizing microalgae for membrane fouling control in MBR systems. The review begins with a comprehensive overview of the evolution and distinctive traits of microalgae-MBRs. It goes further insight into the performance and underlying mechanisms facilitating the reduction of membrane fouling through microalgae intervention. Moreover, the review not only identifies the challenges inherent in employing microalgae for membrane fouling control in MBRs but also illuminates prospective pathways for future advancement in this burgeoning field.

RESUMO

The present study operated the novel moving bed biofilm reactor-nanofiltration-membrane bioreactor (MBBR-NF-MBR) with loose polyamide NF membranes for the first time to treat roxithromycin (ROX) wastewater. Results showed that both MBBR-NF-MBRs achieved superior COD removal of 98.4% and 97.2% and excellent removal of ROX at 74.1% and 65.5%, respectively. The main membrane fouling mechanism was reversible fouling caused by the combination of abundant polysaccharides, proteins and Ca-P precipitates, which could be effectively removed by acidic cleaning. Sorption and biodegradation were the main removal routes of ROX in MBBR. Partial retention of loose NF membrane contributed to microbial metabolism and increased microbial diversity, especially the genera Hyphomicrobium in attached biofilm, which was reasonable for ROX removal. The cleavage of cladinose, demethylation, phosphorylation and ß-oxidation in macrolactone ring were the main biotransformation reactions of ROX. This study provides novel insights for micropollutants wastewater treatment by using loose NF membrane in MBR.

RESUMO

A newly green natural polymer bagasse cellulose based flocculant (PBCF) was synthesized utilizing a grafting copolymerization method for effectively enhancing humic acid (HA) removal from natural water. This work aims to investigate flocculation behavior of PBCF in synthetic water containing HA, and the effects of flocculant dose and initial solution pH on flocculation performance. Results showed that PBCF functioned well at a flocculant dose of 60 mg/L and pH ranging from 6.0 to 9.0. The organic removal efficiency in synthetic water in terms of HA (UV254) and chemical oxygen demand (COD Mn) were up to 90.6% and 91.3%, respectively. Furthermore, the charge neutralization and adsorption bridging played important roles in HA removal. When applied for lake water, PBCF removed 91.6% turbidity and 50.0% dissolved organic matter, respectively. In short, PBCF demonstrates great potential in water treatment in a safe and environmentally friendly or 'green' way.

RESUMO

To tackle membrane fouling and limited removals of pollutants (nutrients and emerging pollutants) that hinder the wide applications of membrane bioreactor (MBR), attached growth MBR (AGMBR) combining MBR and attached growth process has been developed. This review comprehensively presents the up-to-date developments of media used in both aerobic and anaerobic AGMBRs for treating wastewaters containing conventional and emerging pollutants. It also elaborates the properties of different media, characteristics of attached biomass, and their contributions to AGMBR performance. Conventional media, such as biological activated carbon and polymeric carriers, induce formation of aerobic, anoxic and/or anaerobic microenvironment, increase specific surface area or porous space for biomass retention, improve microbial activities, and enrich diverse microorganisms, thereby enhancing pollutants removal. Meanwhile, new media (i.e. biochar, bioaugmented carriers with selected strain/mixed cultures) do not only eliminate conventional pollutants (i.e. high concentration of nitrogen, etc.), but also effectively remove emerging pollutants (i.e. micropollutants, nonylphenol, adsorbable organic halogens, etc.) by forming thick and dense biofilm, creating anoxic/anaerobic microenvironments inside the media, enriching special functional microorganisms and increasing activity of microorganisms. Additionally, media can improve sludge characteristics (i.e. less extracellular polymeric substances and soluble microbial products, larger floc size, better sludge settleability, etc.), alleviating membrane fouling. Future studies need to focus on the development and applications of more new functional media in removing wider spectrum of emerging pollutants and enhancing biogas generation, as well as scale-up of lab-scale AGMBRs to pilot or full-scale AGMBRs.

RESUMO

The performance and membrane fouling of a hybrid moving bed biofilm reactor-membrane bioreactor (MBBR-MBR) system was evaluated when exposed to 0.5 mg/L of antibiotic sulfadiazine (SDZ). Results indicated that although SDZ reduced the removal efficiency of NH4+-N and TN (up to 12%) and TOC (up to 6%) at low C/N (2.5 and 4), it had no significant effect at high C/N (6 and 9). It was found that SDZ was removed 75% and 58% at high C/N of 9 and low C/N of 2.5, respectively. SDZ decreased the ratio of volatile biomass/total biomass and sludge particle size and increased the concentrations of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) and soluble microbial product (SMP) in MBR. Consequently, this accelerated the membrane fouling rates, with an average increase of 6.85 kPa/d at low C/N (2.5) and 0.513-0.701 kPa/d at medium and high C/N (4, 6 and 9).

RESUMO

This study aims to enhance nitrogen removal efficiency of a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) by developing a new MBBR with zeolite powder-based polyurethane sponges as biocarriers (Z-MBBR). Results indicated the total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency and simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) performance in Z-MBBR were nearly 10% higher than those in the conventional MBBR with sponges as biocarriers (S-MBBR). About 84.2 ±â€¯4.8% of TN was removed in Z-MBBR compared to 75.1 ±â€¯6.8% in S-MBBR. Correspondingly, the SND performance in Z-MBBR and S-MBBR was 90.7 ±â€¯4.1% and 81.7 ±â€¯6.5%, respectively. The amount of biofilm attached to new biocarriers (0.470 ±â€¯0.131 g/g carrier) was 1.3 times more than that of sponge carriers (0.355 ±â€¯0.099 g/g carrier). Based on the microelectrode measurements and microbial community analysis, more denitrifying bacteria existed in the Z-MBBR system, and this can improve the SND performance. Consequently, this new Z-MBBR can be a promising option for a hybrid treatment system to better nitrogen removal from wastewater.

RESUMO

This paper investigated a strategy to minimize membrane fouling and increase treatment efficiency through an investigation of a specific approach by adding sponges into a conventional submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor (CAnSMBR). During the operation, the protein-based soluble microbial products as the main factor affecting the membrane fouling could be reduced by sponge addition in the CAnSMBR (SAnSMBR). Furthermore, reducing HRT from 18 h to 12 h could shorten the membrane fouling cycle to 62% and 87% in CAnSMBR and SAnSMBR, respectively. At the initial of COD/NO3 ratio ranges from 5 to 4, only 88% of nitrogen in CAnSMBR was removed, while the SAnSMBR could remove more than 90%. TOC removal efficiency could reach more than 95% under a good stirring scenario. It is evident that the SAnSMBR is a promising solution for improving overall CAnSMBR performance and substantially mitigating membrane fouling.

RESUMO

Cubic-shaped polyurethane sponges (15×15×15mm) in the form of biofilm carriers were used in a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) for treating synthetic domestic wastewater. Results indicated there was no significant difference in total organic carbon (TOC) and ammonia (NH4(+)-N) removal at different filling fractions. Three reactors exhibited high removal efficiencies of over 93% TOC and 95% NH4(+)-N on average at an HRT of 12h and aeration flow of 0.09m(3)/h. However, total nitrogen (TN) removal and simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) increased with increasing the filling fraction. TN removal averaged at 77.2, 85.5% and 86.7% in 10%, 20% and 30% filling fraction reactor, respectively. Correspondingly, SND were 85.5±8.7%, 91.3±9.4% and 93.3±10.2%. Moreover, it was observed that sponge carriers in the 20% filling fraction reactor achieved the maximum biomass amount per gram sponge, followed by the 10% and 30% filling fraction reactors.

RESUMO

A low-cost hybrid system integrating a membrane-less microbial fuel cell (MFC) with an anoxic/oxic membrane bioreactor (MBR) was studied for fouling mitigation. The appended electric field in the MBR was supplied by the MFC with continuous flow. Supernatant from an anaerobic reactor with low dissolved oxygen was used as feed to the MFC in order to enhance its performance compared with that fed with synthetic wastewater. The voltage output of MFC maintained at 0.52±0.02V with 1000Ω resister. The electric field intensity could reach to 0.114Vcm(-1). Compared with the conventional MBR (CMBR), the contents rather than the components of foulants on the cake layer of fouled MFC-MBR system was significantly reduced. Although only 0.5% of the feed COD was translated into electricity and applied to MBR, the hybrid system showed great feasibility without additional consumption but extracting energy from waste water and significantly enhancing the membrane filterability.

RESUMO

In this study, new sponge modified plastic carriers for moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) was developed. The performance and membrane fouling behavior of a hybrid MBBR-membrane bioreactor (MBBR-MBR) system were also evaluated. Comparing to the MBBR with plastic carriers (MBBR), the MBBR with sponge modified biocarriers (S-MBBR) showed better effluent quality and enhanced nutrient removal at HRTs of 12h and 6h. Regarding fouling issue of the hybrid systems, soluble microbial products (SMP) of the MBR unit greatly influenced membrane fouling. The sponge modified biocarriers could lower the levels of SMP in mixed liquor and extracellular polymeric substances in activated sludge, thereby mitigating cake layer and pore blocking resistances of the membrane. The reduced SMP and biopolymer clusters in membrane cake layer were also observed. The results demonstrated that the sponge modified biocarriers were capable of improving overall MBBR performance and substantially alleviated membrane fouling of the subsequent MBR unit.

RESUMO

Specific organic pollutants (SOPs) such as phenolic compounds, PAHs, organic pesticides, and organic herbicides cause health and environmental problems due to their excessive toxic properties and poor biodegradability. Low-cost biosorbents are considered as a promising alternative for conventional adsorbents to remove SOPs from water. These materials have several advantages such as high sorption capacities, good modifiability and recoverability, insensitivity to toxic substances, simple operation in the treatment processes. However, previous reports on various types of biosorbents for removing SOPs are still moderately fragmented. Hence, this paper provides a comprehensive review on using typical low-cost biosorbents obtained from lignocellulose and chitin/chitosan for SOPs adsorption. Especially, their characteristics, biosorption mechanism together with utilization for eliminating SOPs are presented and discussed. The paper also gives a critical view regarding future applications of low-cost biosorbents in SOPs-contaminated water treatment.

RESUMO

Between the sheets: Sodium-ion batteries are an attractive, low-cost alternative to lithium-ion batteries. Nitrogen-doped porous carbon sheets are prepared by chemical activation of polypyrrole-functionalized graphene sheets. When using the sheets as anode material in sodium-ion batteries, their unique compositional and structural features result in high reversible capacity, good cycling stability, and high rate capability.
