RESUMO

It is of great importance to explore the selective hydrogenolysis of ß-O-4 linkages, which account for 45-60% of all linkages in native lignin, to produce valued-added chemicals and fuels from biomass employing UV light as catalyst. TiO2 exhibited satisfactory catalytic performances in various photochemical reactions, due to its versatile advantages involving high catalytic activity, low cost and non-toxicity. In this work, 20 wt.% Ni/TiO2 and oxidant PCC (Pyridinium chlorochromate) were employed to promote the cleavage of ß-O-4 alcohol to obtain high value chemicals under UV irradiation at room temperature. The Ni/TiO2 photocatalyst can be magnetically recovered and efficiently reused in the following four consecutive recycling tests in the cleavage of ß-O-4 ether bond in lignin. Mechanism studies suggested that the oxidation of ß-O-4 alcohol to ß-O-4 ketone by oxidant PCC first occurred during the reaction, and was followed by the photocatalysis of the obtained ß-O-4 ketone to corresponding acetophenone and phenol derivates. Furthermore, the system was tested on a variety of lignin model substrates containing ß-O-4 linkage for the generation of fragmentation products in good to excellent results.

Since the late 1990s, hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) has become a common health problem that mostly affects children and infants in Southeast and East Asia. Global climate change is considered to be one of the major risk factors for HFMD. This study aimed to assess the correlation between meteorological factors and HFMD in the Asia-Pacific region. PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data and Weipu Database were searched to identify relevant articles published before May 2018. Data were collected and analysed using R software. We searched 2397 articles and identified 51 eligible papers in this study. The present study included eight meteorological factors; mean temperature, mean highest temperature, mean lowest temperature, rainfall, relative humidity and hours of sunshine were positively correlated with HFMD, with correlation coefficients (CORs) of 0.52 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.42-0.60), 0.43 (95% CI 0.23-0.59), 0.43 (95% CI 0.23-0.60), 0.27 (95% CI 0.19-0.35), 0.19 (95% CI 0.02-0.35) and 0.19 (95% CI 0.11-0.27), respectively. There were sufficient data to support a negative correlation between mean pressure and HFMD (COR = -0.51, 95% CI -0.63 to -0.36). There was no notable correlation with wind speed (COR = 0.10, 95% CI -0.03 to 0.23). Our findings suggest that meteorological factors affect the incidence of HFMD to a certain extent.

A clear understanding of membrane aging process is essential for the optimization of chemical cleaning in membrane-based facilities. In this study, two-dimensional (2D) Fourier transformation infrared (FTIR) correlation spectroscopy (CoS) analysis was first used to decipher the sequential order of functional group changes of NaOCl-aged poly(ether sulfone)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PES/PVP) membranes. The synchronous maps showed 12 major autopeaks in total. Based on the asynchronous maps, a similar aging sequence of membrane groups was clearly identified at three pHs (i.e., 6, 8, and 10): 1463, 1440, and 1410 (cyclic C-H structures) > 1662 (amide groups) > 1700 (succinimide groups) > 1320, 1292 (S═O asymmetric) > 1486, 1580 (aromatic structures) > 1241 (aromatic ether bands) > 1105, 1150 cm-1 (O═S═O symmetric). Among them, membrane chlorination occurred at 1241, 1410, and 1440 cm-1. Moreover, the initial degradation of PVP and the subsequent transformation of PES could be highly responsible for the increased water permeability and the enlargement of membrane pores, respectively, both leading to serious fouling with humic acid filtration. In summary, the 2D-FTIR-CoS analysis is a powerful approach to reveal the interaction mechanisms of NaOCl-membrane and could be also useful to probe the process of membrane fouling and chemical cleaning.

BACKGROUND: To identify risk factors, associations between dietary patterns, body mass index (BMI), and hypertension in a Chinese population. METHODS: Dietary intake was assessed in 2518 adults by a 3-day 24 h recall and a food frequency questionnaire. Salt and oil intake was assessed by weighing records. Four dietary patterns were identified using principal component analysis. Overweight and obesity was determined according to the Chinese cut-offs for BMI. High blood pressure was defined as systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mmHg. Prevalence ratios (PR) were calculated using Poisson regression. RESULTS: Of the subjects, 26.7% had high blood pressure. Subjects with overweight and obesity were more likely to have high blood pressure than those with normal weight (PR, 95% CI: 1.60, 1.40-1.87; 2.45, 2.11-2.85, respectively). Subjects with a 'traditional' dietary pattern were more likely to have high blood pressure (P for trend = 0.001), whereas those with a 'macho' or 'sweet tooth' dietary pattern were less likely to have high blood pressure (P for trend = 0.004 and <0.001, respectively). More than half of the population had salt intakes > 9 g/d, and blood pressure increased with salt intake (P for trend <0.001). Subjects with a 'traditional' dietary pattern had the highest salt intake (12.3 g/d). CONCLUSION: A traditional dietary pattern is associated with high blood pressure among the population of Jiangsu Province, which may be mainly due to high salt intake. Moreover, high BMI is an important determinant of high blood pressure. Both issues need to be addressed by lifestyle interventions.

Production of 2,6-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,6-DHBA) via enzymatic carboxylation of resorcinol by decarboxylases is of great promising but shows depressed equilibrium conversion. In this study, 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid decarboxylase from Aspergillus oryzae (2,3-DHBD_Ao) pushing the conversion towards carboxylation for efficient 2,6-DHBA biosynthesis was achieved. Meanwhile, a novel amino-modified and lignin-doped cellulose nanocrystal aerogel (A-LCNCA) with high specific surface area and prominent CO2 capture was prepared for 2,3-DHBD_Ao immobilization. 2,3-DHBD_Ao@A-LCNC contributed a further enhanced conversion of carboxylation with the maximal conversion of 76.2 %, which was correlated to both the activity of 2,3-DHBD_Ao and the high CO2 loading capacity of A-LCNCA. Moreover, 2,3-DHBD_Ao@A-LCNC exhibited superior performances in a wider range of temperature and higher concentrations of substrate, with a prolonged storage period longer than 30 days. After seven cycles reuse, 2,3-DHBD_Ao@A-LCNCA could retain 85.3 % of its original activity. These results suggest a considerable potential of 2,3-DHBD_Ao@A-LCNCA in the selective biosynthesis of 2,6-DHBA.

Soft tissue integration around titanium (Ti) implants is weaker than that around natural teeth, compromising long-term success of Ti implants. Carbon monoxide (CO) possesses distinctive therapeutic properties, rendering it as a highly promising candidate for enhancing STI. However, achieving controlled CO generation at the STI interface remains challenging. Herein, a controlled CO-releasing dual-function coating was constructed on Ti surfaces. Under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, the designed surface could actively accelerate CO generation for antibiosis against both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. More importantly, in the absence of NIR, the slow release of CO induces macrophage polarization from pro-inflammatory phenotype towards pro-regenerative phenotype. In a rat implantation model with induced infection, the designed surface effectively controlled the bacterial infection, alleviates accompanying inflammation and modulated immune microenvironment, leading to enhanced STI. Single-cell sequencing revealed that the coating alters the cytokine profile within the soft tissue, thereby influencing cellular functions. Differentially expressed genes in macrophages are highly enriched in the PIK3-Akt pathway. Furthermore, the cellular communication between fibroblasts and macrophages was significantly enhanced through the CXCL12/CXCL14/CXCR4 and CSF1-CSF1R ligand-receptor pair. These findings indicate that our coating showed an appealing prospect for enhancing STI around Ti implants, which would ultimately contribute to the improved long-term success of Ti implants.

Baicalin (BG) is a bioactive flavonoid extracted from the dried root of the medicinal plant, Scutellaria radix (SR) (dicotyledonous family, Labiatae), and has several biological activities. Polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG400) has been used as a suitable solvent for several traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) and is often used as an excipient for the compound preparation of SR. However, the drug-excipient interactions between BG and PEG400 are still unknown. Herein, we evaluated the effect of a single intravenous PEG400 administration on the BG levels of rats using pharmacokinetic and tissue distribution studies. A liver microsome and recombinant enzyme incubation system were used to further confirm the interaction mechanism between PEG400 and UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs) (UGT1A8 and UGT1A9). The pharmacokinetic study demonstrated that following the co-intravenous administration of PEG400 and BG, the total clearance (CLz) of BG in the rat plasma decreased by 101.60% (p < 0.05), whereas the area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC)0-t and AUC0-inf increased by 144.59% (p < 0.05) and 140.05% (p < 0.05), respectively. Additionally, the tissue distribution study showed that the concentration of BG and baicalein-6-O-ß-D-glucuronide (B6G) in the tissues increased, whereas baicalein (B) in the tissues decreased, and the total amount of BG and its metabolites in tissues altered following the intravenous administration of PEG400. We further found that PEG400 induced the UGT1A8 and UGT1A9 enzyme activities by affecting the maximum enzymatic velocity (Vmax) and Michaelis-Menten constant (Km) values of UGT1A8 and UGT1A9. In conclusion, our results demonstrated that PEG400 interaction with UGTs altered the pharmacokinetic behaviors and tissue distribution characteristics of BG and its metabolites in rats.

BACKGROUND: The major etiology of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is infection with human enterovirus A (HEV-A). Among subtypes of HEV-A, coxsackievirusA16 (CoxA16) and enterovirus 71 (EV71) are major causes for recurrent HFMD among infants and children in Jiangsu Province, mainland China. Here, we analyzed maternal antibodies between prenatal women and their neonates, to determine age-specific seroprevalence of human EV71 and CoxA16 infections in infants and children aged 0 to 15 years. The results may facilitate the development of immunization against HFMD. METHODS: This study used cross-section of 40 pairs of pregnant women and neonates and 800 subjects aged 1 month to 15 years old. Micro-dose cytopathogenic effects measured neutralizing antibodies against EV71 and CoxA16. Chi-square test compared seroprevalence rates between age groups and McNemar test, paired-Samples t-test and independent-samples t-test analyzed differences of geometric mean titers. RESULTS: A strong correlation between titers of neutralizing antibody against EV71 and CoxA16 in prenatal women and neonates was observed (rEV71 = 0.67, rCoxA16 = 0.56, respectively, p < 0.05). Seroprevalence rates of anti-EV71 antibody gradually decreased with age between 0 to 6 months old, remained low between 7 to 11 months (5.0-10.0%), and increased between 1 and 4 years (22.5-87.5%). Age-specific seroprevalence rates of anti-EV71 antibody stabilized in >80% of children between 5 to 15 years of age. However, seroprevalence rates of anti-CoxA16 antibody were very low (0.0-13.0%) between 0 to 6 months of age, gradually increased between 7 months to 4 years (15.0-70.0%), and stabilized at 54.0% (108/200) between 5 to 15 years. Seroprevalence rates against EV71 and CoxA16 were low under 1 year (0.0-10.0%), and showed an age dependent increase with high seroprevalence (52.5-62.5%) between 4 and 10 years of age. CONCLUSIONS: Concomitant infection of EV71 and CoxA16 was common in Jiangsu Province. Therefore, development of bivalent vaccine against both EV71 and CoxA16 is critical. The optimal schedule for vaccination may be 4 to11 months of age.

Dental implants are widely used to restore missing teeth because of their stability and comfort characteristics. Peri-implant infection may lead to implant failure and other profound consequences. It is believed that peri-implantitis is closely related to the formation of biofilms, which are difficult to remove once formed. Therefore, endowing titanium implants with anti-adhesion properties is an effective method to prevent peri-implant infection. Moreover, anti-adhesion strategies for titanium implant surfaces are critical steps for resisting bacterial adherence. This article reviews the process of bacterial adhesion, the material properties that may affect the process, and the anti-adhesion strategies that have been proven effective and promising in practice. This article intends to be a reference for further improvement of the antibacterial adhesion strategy in clinical application and for related research on titanium implant surfaces.

Bacterial contamination and biofilm formation onpercutaneous implants can lead to device failure and be life-threatening. To solve this issue, we constructed a carboxymethyl dextran- (CMD-) based nanomicelle antibacterial coating on the microarc-oxidized titanium (MAO-Ti) surface (described in the supplementary file). The self-assembled CMD-based nanomicelles and octadecylamine (ODA) were developed as a drug carrier and loaded with minocycline (MC). The characterization and stability of the MC-loaded nanomicelles were determined. The surface roughness, hydrophilicity, and drug release property of the coatings were also investigated. Our findings showed that the cross-linked MC-loaded nanomicelles (MC@(ODA-CMD)CL) were more stable than the uncross-linked nanomicelles. Moreover, MC@(ODA-CMD)CL was successfully incorporated into the pores of MAO-Ti, which significantly increased the surface hydrophilicity of the coatings without influencing their surface roughness. In addition, the coatings demonstrated a sustained release time of 360 h, with a cumulative release rate reaching 86.6%. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) was used to determine the antibacterial properties of the coatings, and human skin fibroblasts were seeded on them to investigate their biocompatibility. The results showed that the coatings significantly reduced the number of adhesive S. aureus and promoted the viability, adhesion, and morphology of the human skin fibroblasts compared to smooth titanium (S-Ti) sheets. In conclusion, MC-loaded CMD-based nanomicelles coated on MAO-Ti surface (MC@(ODA-CMD)CL-Ti) demonstrated sustained-release properties, excellent antibacterial properties and biocompatibility, and promising potential as coatings for percutaneous implants.

As an attractive renewable carbon resource, lignocellulose could be exploited to produce high-value-added products. Notably, comprehensive utilization of lignocelluloses and lignin first exploitation is still a challenge during bio-refinery process. In this study, an environmentally benign extraction method via hydrothermal-deep eutectic solvents pretreatment was proposed to separate hemicelluloses and high purity of lignin simultaneously from moso bamboo with most of cellulose retaining in the residues. Hemicelluloses were firstly removed by hydrothermal pretreatment, following with lignin extraction by DESs which was prepared from choline chloride and lactic acid, betaine and lactic acid, respectively. Notably, 98.2 wt% of hemicelluloses were degraded and mainly converted into pentose. Meanwhile, 80.1 wt% of delignification was achieved under the optimum condition (CC/LA, 140℃, 6 h), following with up to 99.49% of lignin purity. The mass balance evaluation demonstrated that the combined hydrothermal-deep eutectic solvents pretreatment is a potential method for efficient fractionation of lignocellulose.

Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) infection can cause hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD), and even fatal meningoencephalitis. Unfortunately, there is currently no effective treatment for EV-A71 infection due to the lack of understanding of the mechanism of neurological diseases. In this study, we employed SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells to explore the roles of caspase-1 in neuropathogenesis. The expression and activity of caspase-1 were analyzed. The potential immuneconsequences mediated by caspase-1 including cell death, lysis, DNA degradation, and secretion of pro-inflammatory were also examined. We found the gene expression levels of caspase-1, IL-1ß, IL-18 and active caspase-1 were markedly increased in the SH-SY5Y cells at 48 h post EV-A71 infection. The cell death, lysis, and DNA degradation were also increased during infection, which could be significantly alleviated by caspase-1 inhibition. These observations provided additional experimental evidence supporting caspase-1-mediated pyroptosis as a novel pathway of inflammatory programmed cell death.

Avian influenza H7N9 viruses are an important public health concern due to their high mortality rate and potentials for future pandemics. We investigated human susceptibility to H7N9 viruses using recombinant H7N9 hemagglutinin (HA) proteins as a probe and found a strong association between H7N9 infections and HA binding among saliva samples from 32 patients and 60 uninfected controls in Jiangsu province, China, during the 2016 epidemic season. We also found that sialyl Lex (SLex) antigen that was recognized by H7N9 HA was associated with H7N9 virus infection. Further analysis suggested that additional saccharide residues adjacent to the SLex moiety may affect the H7N9-binding specificity. Our data suggested that saliva may be a useful reagent to study human susceptibility to avian influenza H7N9 virus, which may impact the disease control and prevention of avian influenza viruses as important human pathogens.

Chemical cleaning is an essential process for the permeability recovery of fouled membranes, which is highly related to the interactions between chemicals and bio-macromolecules in fouling layers. In this study, three bio-macromolecules (i.e., effluent biopolymers (i.e., 0.45 µm-100 kDa) from a full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plant, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and dextran) were exposed to different chemicals (i.e., NaClO, H2O2, NaOH, and HCl) with varied concentrations to understand the changes in their properties and functional groups. The results showed that exposure to oxidants and alkali decreased the consistency index of all bio-macromolecules. With an increased oxidant dose, the molecular sizes of effluent biopolymers and dextran continuously reduced because of the oxidative cleavage of the long molecule chains. However, the molecular size of BSA sharply increased after being treated with oxidants and alkali, likely due to the cross-linkage of protein molecules. Three-dimensional fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) spectra showed that the aromatic protein-like and humic substances in the effluent biopolymers were destructed readily during the treatments of oxidants and alkali. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyse further confirmed that exposures to NaClO, H2O2 and NaOH led to the destruction of protein structures (i.e., amide I, II and III), the increase of carbonyl and carboxyl groups, and the decrease of fatty acids/lipids, all of which could make the bio-macromolecules more hydrophilic. Most importantly, the bio-macromolecules exposed to chemicals had better filterability, and their permeability through membranes also significantly increased, which could be explained well by the above analysis. The chemical cleaning mechanisms of fouled membranes are understood in depth in this study, and all of the results shed light on the implementation of on-line chemical enhanced backwashing in membrane processes.

The integration of pre-coagulation with ultrafiltration (UF) is expected to not only reduce membrane fouling but also improve natural organic matter (NOM) removal. However, it is difficult to determine the proper coagulant dosage for different water qualities. The objective of this study was to probe the potential of UV-vis spectroscopic analysis to reveal the coagulant-induced changes in the fouling potentials of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and to determine the optimal coagulant dosage. The Zeta potentials (ZPs) and average particle size of the four DOM solutions (Aldrich humic acid (AHA), AHA-sodium alginate (SA), AHA-bovine serum albumin (BSA) and AHA-dextran (DEX)) coagulated with aluminum chloride (AlCl3) were measured. Results showed that increasing the aluminum coagulant dosage induced the aggregation of DOM. Meanwhile, the addition of aluminum coagulant resulted in an increase in DSlope(325-375) (the slope of the log-transformed absorbance spectra from 325 to 375 nm) and a decrease in S(275-295) (the slope of the log-transformed absorption coefficient from 275 to 295 nm) and SR (the ratio of Slope(275-295) and Slope(350-400)). The variations of these spectral parameters (i.e., DSlope(325-375), S(275-295) and SR) correlated well with the aluminum-caused changes in ZPs and average particle size. This implies that spectral parameters have the potential to indicate DOM aggregation. In addition, good correlations of spectral parameters and membrane fouling behaviors (i.e., unified membrane fouling index (UMFI)) suggest that the changes in DSlope(325-375), S(275-295) and SR were indicative of the aluminum-caused alterations of fouling potentials of all DOM solutions. Interestingly, the optimal dosage of aluminum (40 µM for AHA, AHA-BSA, and AHA-DEX) was obtained based on the relation between spectral parameters and fouling behaviors. Overall, the spectroscopic analysis, particularly for the utilization of spectral parameters, provided a convenient approach for the exploration of combined coagulation and UF systems for DOM removal.

A cross-sectional survey of 2819 adults aged 20 years and above was undertaken in 2002 in Jiangsu Province. Zinc intake was assessed using a consecutive 3-day 24-h dietary recall method. Insufficient and excess intake was determined according to the Chinese Dietary Recommended Intakes. Four distinct dietary patterns were identified namely "traditional", "macho", "sweet tooth", and "healthy". Intake of zinc from biofortified rice was simulated at an intermediate zinc concentration (2.7 mg/100 g) and a high zinc concentration (3.8 mg/100 g) in rice. Average total zinc intake was 12.0 ± 3.7 mg/day, and insufficiency of zinc intake was present in 15.4%. Simulated zinc intake from biofortified rice with intermediate and high zinc concentration decreased the prevalence of low zinc intake to 6.5% and 4.4%, respectively. The effect was most pronounced in the "traditional" pattern, with only 0.7% of insufficiency of zinc intake remaining in the highest quartile of the pattern. Zinc intake was inversely associated with the "sweet tooth" pattern. Zinc biofortifed rice improves dietary zinc intake and lowers risk for insufficient zinc intake, especially for subjects with a more "traditional" food pattern, but less for subjects with a "sweet tooth" food pattern.

Altered circulating microRNA (miRNA) profiles have been noted in patients with microbial infections. We compared host serum miRNA levels in patients with hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) caused by enterovirus 71 (EV71) and coxsackievirus 16 (CVA16) as well as in other microbial infections and in healthy individuals. Among 664 different miRNAs analyzed using a miRNA array, 102 were up-regulated and 26 were down-regulated in sera of patients with enteroviral infections. Expression levels of ten candidate miRNAs were further evaluated by quantitative real-time PCR assays. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis revealed that six miRNAs (miR-148a, miR-143, miR-324-3p, miR-628-3p, miR-140-5p, and miR-362-3p) were able to discriminate patients with enterovirus infections from healthy controls with area under curve (AUC) values ranged from 0.828 to 0.934. The combined six miRNA using multiple logistic regression analysis provided not only a sensitivity of 97.1% and a specificity of 92.7% but also a unique profile that differentiated enterovirial infections from other microbial infections. Expression levels of five miRNAs (miR-148a, miR-143, miR-324-3p, miR-545, and miR-140-5p) were significantly increased in patients with CVA16 versus those with EV71 (p<0.05). Combination of miR-545, miR-324-3p, and miR-143 possessed a moderate ability to discrimination between CVA16 and EV71 with an AUC value of 0.761. These data indicate that sera from patients with different subtypes of enteroviral infection express unique miRNA profiles. Serum miRNA expression profiles may provide supplemental biomarkers for diagnosing and subtyping enteroviral HFMD infections.
