BACKGROUND: Hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) is a global public health issues, especially in China. It has threat the health of children under 5 years old. The early recognition of high-risk districts and understanding of epidemic characteristics can facilitate health sectors to prevent the occurrence of HFMD effectively. METHODS: Descriptive analysis was used to summarize epidemic characteristics, and the spatial autocorrelation analysis and space-time scan analysis were utilized to explore distribution pattern of HFMD and identify hot spots with statistical significance. The result was presented in ArcMap. RESULTS: A total of 52,095 HFMD cases were collected in Zibo city from 1 Jan 2010 to 31 Dec 2019. The annual average incidence was 129.72/100,000. The distribution of HFMD was a unimodal trend, with peak from April to September. The most susceptible age group was children under 5 years old (92.46%), and the male-to-female ratio is 1.60: 1. The main clusters were identified in Zhangdian District from 12 April 2010 to 18 September 2012. Spatial autocorrelation analysis showed that the global spatial correlation in Zibo were no statistical significance, except in 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018. Cold spots were gathered in Boshan county and Linzi district, while hot spots only in Zhangdian District in 2018, but other years were no significance. CONCLUSION: Hot spots mainly concentrated in the central and surrounding city of Zibo city. We suggest that imminent public health planning and resource allocation should be focused within those areas.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) poses a great disease burden in China. However, there are few studies on the relationship between temperature variability (TV) and HFMD. Moreover, whether air pollutions have modified effects on this relationship is still unknown. Therefore, this study aims to explore the modified effects of air pollutants on TV-HFMD association in Zibo City, China. Daily data of HFMD cases, meteorological factors, and air pollutants from 2015 to 2019 were collected for Zibo City. TV was estimated by calculating standard deviation of minimum and maximum temperatures over the exposure days. We used generalized additive model to estimate the association between TV and HFMD. The modified effects of air pollutants were assessed by comparing the estimated TV-HFMD associations between different air stratums. We found that TV increased the risk of HFMD. The effect was strongest at TV03 (4 days of exposure), when the incidence of HFMD increased by 3.6% [95% CI: 1.3-5.9%] for every 1℃ increases in TV. Males, children aged 0-4 years, were more sensitive to TV. We found that sulfur dioxide (SO2) enhanced TV's effects on all considered exposure days, while ozone (O3) reduced TV's effects on some exposure days in whole concerned population. However, we did not detect significant effect modification by particulate matter less than 10 microns in aerodynamic diameter (PM10). These findings are of significance in developing policies and public health practices to reduce the risks of HFMD by integrating changes in temperatures and air pollutants.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the high-risk factors of augmented vertebra recompression after percutaneous vertebral augmentation (PVA) in the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF) and analyze the correlation between these factors and augmented vertebra recompression after PVA. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 353 patients who received PVA for a single-segment osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture from January 2017 to December 2018 in our department according to the inclusion criteria. All cases meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were divided into two groups: 82 patients in the recompression group and 175 patients in the non-compression group. The following covariates were reviewed: age, gender, body mass index (BMI), injured vertebral segment, bone mineral density (BMD) during follow-up, intravertebral cleft (IVC) before operation, selection of surgical methods, unilateral or bilateral puncture, volume of bone cement injected, postoperative leakage of bone cement, distribution of bone cement, contact between the bone cement and the upper or lower endplates, and anterior height of injured vertebrae before operation, after surgery, and at the last follow-up. Univariate analysis was performed on these factors, and the statistically significant factors were substituted into the logistic regression model to analyze their correlation with the augmented vertebra recompression after PVA. RESULTS: A total of 257 patients from 353 patients were included in this study. The follow-up time was 12-24 months, with an average of 13.5 ± 0.9 months. All the operations were successfully completed, and the pain of patients was relieved obviously after PVA. Univariate analysis showed that in the early stage after PVA, the augmented vertebra recompression was correlated with BMD, surgical methods, volume of bone cement injected, preoperative IVC, contact between bone cement and the upper or lower endplates, and recovery of anterior column height. The difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Among them, multiple factors logistic regression elucidated that more injected cement (P < 0.001, OR = 0.558) and high BMD (P = 0.028, OR = 0.583) were negatively correlated with the augmented vertebra recompression after PVA, which meant protective factors (B < 0). Preoperative IVC (P < 0.001, OR = 3.252) and bone cement not in contact with upper or lower endplates (P = 0.006, OR = 2.504) were risk factors for the augmented vertebra recompression after PVA. The augmented vertebra recompression after PVP was significantly less than that of PKP (P = 0.007, OR = 0.337). CONCLUSIONS: The augmented vertebra recompression after PVA is due to the interaction of various factors, such as surgical methods, volume of bone cement injected, osteoporosis, preoperative IVC, and whether the bone cement is in contact with the upper or lower endplates.

Poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) is a promising material in biomedical engineering due to its suitable mechanical properties and excellent chemical resistance and biocompatibility. However, the biological inertness of PEEK limits its applications. In this study, we developed a facile approach of immersion to generate a biocompatible and bioactive PEEK that induced osteodifferentiation. First, micropores on the surface of PEEK were introduced by concentrated sulfuric acid and subsequent water immersion, followed by the hydrothermal treatment to reduce residual sulfuric acid. Subsequently, the sulfonated PEEK surface was activated by the oxygen plasma treatment and then coated with a poly(dopamine) (PDA) layer by immersion into the dopamine solution. Finally, the tripeptide Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) was integrated onto the PDA-coated surface of PEEK by immersion into the RGD peptide solution. The surface characteristics (physical chemistry and biological properties) and the ability to form bonelike apatite were systematically investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, water contact angle analysis, the Archimedes' fluid saturation method, ellipsometry, a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring, cell proliferation, real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction analysis, alizarin red staining, immunocytochemistry staining, and simulated body fluid immersion. Collectively, the modified PEEK showed a significantly improved ability to promote cell proliferation, osteogenic differentiation, and bonelike apatite formation in vitro as compared to the PEEK control. These results demonstrate that combined facile surface modifications for PEEK enhance its bioactivity and biocompatibility, and induce osteodifferentiation. This study presents a strategy for broadening the use of PEEK in the application of orthopedic implants and could be industrially scalable in future.

Fluoride (F) is known to induce reproduction toxicity, and the elucidation of its underlying mechanisms is an ongoing research. These findings aim to provide deeper insights into roles of soduim fluoride (NaF) in testis damage, which could contribute to a better understanding of fluoride-induced male reproductive toxicity. The Leydig cells were administrated by 0, 5, 10, and 20 mg/L NaF for 24 h, respectively. Scanning electron microscope was used to identify the change of surface structure in the Leydig cells. The results showed that fluoride exposure of high-dose induced bulged balloon in the membrane of the Leydig cell. We speculated that high doses of NaF inhibited cell proliferation and induced cell apoptosis in Leydig cells. This is the first time that we have reported that fluoride impaired cytomembrane and cytoskeleton of the Leydig cells in vitro treated with different doses of fluoride for 24 h by using a scanning electron microscope. Damage to the cytoskeleton and cytomembrane may be one of the reasons of male reproductive toxicity induced by fluoride.

Modification of implants by antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) can improve the antimicrobial activity of the implants. However, AMPs have some cytotoxicity in vivo when they are exposed at body temperature. To tackle this challenge, we propose to develop a new approach to generating a smart antimicrobial surface through exposure of AMPs on the surface. A polydopamine film was first formed on the substrates, followed by the conjugation of a temperature-sensitive polymer, poly( N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM), to the film through atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Then, AMPs were conjugated to the NIPAM on the resultant pNIPAM-modified surface through a click chemistry reaction. Because of the temperature-sensitive property of pNIPAM, the AMPs motif was more exposed to the external environment at room temperature (25 °C) than at body temperature (37 °C), making the surface present a higher antimicrobial activity at room temperature than at body temperature. More importantly, such a smart behavior is accompanied with the increased biocompatibility of the surface at body temperature when compared to the substrates unmodified or modified by AMPs or pNIPAM alone. Our in vivo study further verified that pNIPAM-AMP dual modified bone implants showed increased biocompatibility even when they were challenged with the bacteria at room temperature before implantation. These results indicate that the implants are antibacterial at room temperature and can be safely employed during surgery, resulting in no infection after implantations. Our work represents a new promising strategy to fully explore the antimicrobial property of AMPs, while improving their biocompatibility in vivo. The higher exposure of AMPs at room temperature (the temperature for storing the implants before surgery) will help decrease the risk of bacterial infection, and the lower exposure of AMPs at body temperature (the temperature after the implants are placed into the body by surgery) will improve the biocompatibility of AMPs.
