OBJECTIVE: This systematic review investigates the prevalence of erosive tooth wear (ETW) in individuals classified as risk groups (gastroesophageal reflux disease, eating disorders, special diets, acidic beverage, drugs and alcohol, legal drugs and medications, and occupational or sports). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The research was conducted in nine databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, LILACS/BVS, SciELO, Scopus, Science Direct, Open Grey, and Web of Science) up to April 2024 (PROSPERO CRD42021270150), along with a manual search of grey literature. Observational studies involving children and adults from these previously mentioned risk groups, which provided data on ETW prevalence, were included without date or language restrictions. The methodological quality of studies was evaluated using the Joanna Briggs Institute's Prevalence Data Critical Appraisal Tool. General and subgroup data were meta-analyzed using a random-effects model. RESULTS: Overall, 4403 studies were retrieved, out of which 148 met the inclusion criteria. Each risk group showed higher prevalences of ETW in these patients in general and subgroup analysis; although subgroup analysis was not possible for all risk groups due to the heterogeneity of the indices found. CONCLUSIONS: The Legal drugs and Medications risk group showed lower overall prevalence values (30%), while the Drugs and Alcohol risk group obtained higher values (67%). Prevalence rates for other groups were: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (54.1%), Eating Disorders (65%), Special Diets (65.9%), Acidic Beverages (40%), Occupational and Sports (51%). CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This systematic review highlights that risk groups are indeed at significant risk for the development of ETW and greater preventive care and dental monitoring are needed.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to map evidence on the relationship between hard drug use and dental wear. The scoping review is guided by the question: What is the relationship between hard drug consumption and dental wear? MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adhering to PRISMA-ScR guidelines, searches were conducted across PubMed, Embase, and four databases in March 2024. Inclusion criteria included studies investigating the association between hard drug use and dental wear, regardless of publication date or language. Data were presented through narrative exposition, tables, and a conceptual framework. RESULTS: Twenty-eight studies (four case-control, three cross-sectional, five case reports, and sixteen literature reviews) were included. Among case-control studies, 75% observed an association between drug use and dental erosion; however, no cross-sectional studies demonstrated this association. Despite questionable quality, reviews established connections between drug use and dental erosion. Studies aimed to elucidate potential causes for dental erosion. CONCLUSIONS: Analysis suggests a potential link between hard drug use and dental wear, though indirect. Factors like bruxism and reduced salivary pH may contribute to dental wear among drug users. Further investigation through primary studies exploring this relationship is necessary. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Dentists should focus not only on clinical characteristics of dental wear but also on mediating factors such as bruxism and decreased salivary pH associated with drug use. This holistic approach allows for a deeper understanding of dental wear mechanisms, enabling targeted preventive and therapeutic interventions.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of dentifrices containing sodium fluoride (NaF) combined with NovaMin (Sensodyne Repair & Protect-SRP), NaF combined with stannous fluoride (SnF2, Oral-B Pro-Gengiva-OBP), and amine fluoride (AmF, Colgate Elmex-ELM) on enamel subjected to simulated erosive cycling. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bovine enamel-dentin discs (n = 10/group) were subjected to erosive cycling with orange juice (pH = 3.29, 5 min, 3x/day), artificial saliva (SA-2 h, 3x/day and overnight) and treated with dentifrice (2 min, 2x/day) or without treatment (CONT). Surface microhardness (SMH) was evaluated at baseline (T0), on the first (T1) and fifth (T5) days. SMH loss (%SHL) was calculated. Surface roughness (Ra, µm) was determined at T0 and T5. Morphology and mineral content were evaluated under scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. Data were analyzed using ANOVA/Tukey or Bonferroni (α = 5%). RESULTS: No differences in %SHL were detected among groups at T1. At T5, OBP promoted %SHL, Ra, and ΔRa significantly lower than all the other groups (p < 0.05). All groups exhibited morphological changes in topography and similar Ca/P means before and after treatments. CONCLUSIONS: Dentifrice containing SnF2 minimized the negative effects on the SMH and Ra caused by exposure to orange juice after 5 days of simulated cycling. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Patients who are more exposed to risk factors for dental erosion could benefit from the use of dentifrice containing SnF2.

BACKGROUND: Erosive tooth wear is an increasingly common pathology in the youth population. It refers to the chronic, localized, painless loss of dental hard tissues caused by non-bacterial acids, often originating from external sources like acidic beverages. Energy drink consumption is on the rise, frequently preceding physical exercise to enhance perceived energy levels. However, there are other types of beverages that also provide energy, such as pre-workout drinks, classified as sports drinks. The main objective of this research study has been conducted with the purpose of analyzing the pH of energy drinks and pre-workout beverages, and studying the frequency of consumption of such beverages in amateur athletes who practice sports. METHODS: A total of 67 beverages were examined, comprising 43 energy drinks and 24 sports supplementation beverages, also known as pre-workout or pre-training beverages. The participants were given a survey to complete. They were asked to respond whether they consumed any type of pre-workout or energy drink, and they were also asked about the timing of consumption. RESULTS: The findings indicated an average pH of 3.3 among the studied beverages, indicating a pH below the critical threshold. Out of the 113 participants, 51% reported taking some form of supplementation. CONCLUSIONS: Consequently, it was concluded that most of the analyzed beverages recorded pH values low enough to classify them as erosive, posing a threat to enamel surface. When analyzing the frequency of consumption of energy drinks and pre-workout beverages in amateur athletes, we observed that most participants aged 29 years or younger took supplements 3 to 5 times a week, while the older age groups more frequently took supplements 1 to 2 times a week.

BACKGROUND: Non-institutionalised older adults is the majority of older adults in Hong Kong. The study aimed to examine erosive tooth wear (ETW) and its association with dental conditions and oral hygiene habits among non-institutionalised older adults in Hong Kong. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited dentate adults aged 60 or above from nine elderly daycare centres in the five main districts of Hong Kong. The study consists of a questionnaire survey and a clinical examination. A researcher used a questionnaire to collected the participants' demographic information, oral hygiene habits such as toothbrushing habits and dental visit behaviour. A calibrated examiner performed an oral examination in the daycare elderly centre to assess the ETW using basic erosive wear (BEWE) criteria. Oral hygiene was recorded using visible plaque index. Prosthetic status was recorded using the World Health Organization criteria. Logistic regression was used to examine the correlation between ETW and the dental conditions and oral hygiene habits. RESULTS: This study recruited 433 dentate adults and 333 adults were female (77%). Their age ranged from 60 to 99 years and their mean age was 74 years (SD = 7). They all had ETW (BEWE > 0). Over half of them (57%) had BEWE score of 3, indicating severe ETW. Analysis showed increasing age (OR = 1.030, p = 0.029) and older adults with untreated dental caries had higher odds (OR = 1.822, p = 0.002) of presenting severe ETW. No other associations were found between the ETW and the factors studied. CONCLUSION: Hong Kong non-institutionalised older adults aged 60 or above had ETW and more than half of them had severe ETW. Increasing age and having untreated dental caries were associated with severe ETW.

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed (1) to map, analyse, interpret and synthesize data from in situ studies on which substances were added to acidic beverages to reduce the erosive potential on tooth enamel and (2) to establish the level of evidence of the effectiveness of adding substances to acidic beverages to reduce the erosive potential on tooth enamel. DESIGN: This is a scoping review, according to the methods from the Joanna Briggs Institute and PRISMA-ScR, with high-sensitivity searches in the databases PubMed (MEDLINE), Virtual Health Library, Embase (Elsevier), Scopus (Elsevier), Web of Science and ScienceDirect (Elsevier). In situ studies published in English until December 2022 were included. Studies that did not report a control group were excluded. To map and summarize the results, tables and figures were used. RESULTS: From 895 potentially eligible articles, nine were included. Blackcurrant juices (n = 5) with the addition of calcium (n = 3) or xanthan gum (n = 2) formulations were the most tested in terms of reducing the erosive potential of the beverages on tooth enamel. The profilometer was the equipment of choice (n = 8) for evaluating the loss of enamel structure after the experimental tests. CONCLUSIONS: Calcium and xanthan gum are among the most tested by in situ studies, offering promising results in reducing the erosive potential of fruit juices and carbonated and energy drinks.

OBJECTIVES: To simulate the abrasive potential of an interdental brush when applied with toothpastes and prophylactic gels/solutions in a novel laboratory brushing simulation set-up. METHODS: A brushing device was customized to treat dentin samples mimicking a simplified interdental space with an interdental brush (ISO 2). The brushing, that is, 7200 strokes for 1 h, was performed with artificial saliva (control), a povidone-iodine solution, and slurries of chlorhexidine and fluoride gels as well as three toothpastes with different RDA values ranging from 29 to 100, respectively. The loss of dentin was profilometrically assessed and compared with ANOVA and Fishers LSD. RESULTS: While artificial saliva as control, the solution and the gel slurries showed no measurable dentin loss, toothpastes resulted in a measurable linear surface damage with respect to the actual intrinsic RDA values and ranged from 12.6 to 26.5 µm (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Any interdental cleaning product should be tailored and carefully instructed. Any over- and misuse should be avoided, which applies especially to the use of interdental brushes in combination with abrasive toothpastes.

OBJECTIVE: The present systematic review with a network meta-analysis (NMA) aimed to evaluate the effect of high-power lasers, associated or not with fluoride compounds, to control and prevent Erosive Tooth Wear (ETW). METHODS: The review was registered in the PROSPERO (CRD42021242547) and followed the PICO question: P (population): enamel and dentin substrate; I (Intervention): high-power laser irradiation, associated or not with fluoride compounds; C (Control): no-treatment; and O (Outcomes): prevention/control of ETW. The electronic databases PubMed, Scopus, and EMBASE were searched. Two independent reviewers evaluated in vitro and in situ studies. The risk of bias was assessed using the RoBDEMAT tool. The estimated treatment effect derived from direct and indirect comparisons were analyzed and the difference between these effects was calculated based on the data of enamel and dentin surface loss (in µm). RESULTS: A total of 179 studies were retrieved and after the exclusion of duplicates, 103 studies had their titles and abstracts evaluated. Thirty-nine studies had their full text analyzed for data extraction (Cohen Kappaâ¯=â¯0.88). For sound enamel, the laser irradiation (L), fluoride application (F) and, the association of treatments (Lâ¯+â¯F) promoted higher protection than No-Treatment (NT). For eroded enamel, Lâ¯+â¯F and F did not differ, but both treatments reduced surface loss compared to NT and L. For sound and eroded dentin, treatments with laser increased surface loss. CONCLUSIONS: Although a high-power laser has some potential to prevent erosive tooth wear, this effect is not better than that of standard fluoride. The use of laser in the management of dentin erosive wear can be harmful.

The effect of solutions containing a statherin-derived peptide (Stn15pSpS) on the protection against enamel erosion in vitro was evaluated. Bovine enamel specimens were divided into 4 groups (n = 15/group): (1) deionized water (negative control), (2) Elmex Erosion Protection™ (positive control), (3) 1.88 × 10-5 M Stn15pSpS, and (4) 3.76 × 10-5 M Stn15pSpS. The solutions were applied on the specimens for 1 min. Stimulated saliva was collected from 3 donors and used to form a 2-h acquired pellicle on the specimens. Then, the specimens were submitted to an erosive pH-cycling protocol 4 times/day, for 7 days (0.01 M HCl pH 2.0/45 s, artificial saliva/2 h, and artificial saliva overnight). The solutions were applied again during pH-cycling, 2 times/day for 1 min after the first and last erosive challenges. Enamel loss (µm) was assessed by contact profilometry. Data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's test (p < 0.05). The best protection against erosion was conferred by Elmex Erosion Protection that significantly differed from all the other treatments, followed by the solutions containing Stn15pSpS, regardless of the concentration. However, 3.76 × 10-5 M Stn15pSpS did not differ from the negative control. The solution containing the lower concentration of Stn15pSpS protected against erosion in vitro, which should be confirmed using protocols that more closely resemble the clinical condition.

OBJECTIVES: To test 8 models of linear surface roughness assessment in characterizing surface profile description and to correlate these models with equivalent areal parameters over sound human enamel in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty enamel blocks were randomly selected. The roughness data (2D-Rp; Rv; Rz; Rc; Rt; Ra; Rq; Rsk; Rku/3D-Sp; Sv; Sz; Sa; Sq; Ssk; Sku) was obtained in duplicate in a non-contact 3D optical profilometer. The models were composed by 1 single vertical trace (model 1) until 8 traces (model 8 composed by three vertical traces, three horizontal traces, and two diagonal). RESULTS: The addition of linear sampling traces to the enamel blocks did not result in Rp, Rv, Rz, Rc, Rt, Ra, Rq, Rsk, and Rku value changes (low power-from 5 to 72%). Significant Spearman's correlation coefficients were obtained in most correlation analysis (Rp â Sp; Rv â Sv; Rz â Sz; Ra â Sa; Rq â Sq; and Rku â Sku). CONCLUSIONS: A single vertical trace in the middle of the sample was representative of the overall enamel surface roughness (Rp, Rv, Rz, Rc, Rt, Ra, Rq, Rsk, and Rku) models. The majority of the assessed models in the correlation evaluation presented significant and positive association. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The findings highlight the applicable model for roughness analysis over human enamel recommended for research and in situ trials assessments.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the activity, distribution, and colocalization of cathepsin K (catK) and matrix metalloproteases (MMPs) in both intact and eroded dentin in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eroded dentin was obtained by consecutive treatment with 5% citric acid (pH = 2.3) for 7 days, while intact dentin remained untreated. Pulverized dentin powder (1.0 g) was extracted from both intact and eroded dentin using 5 mL of 50 mM Tris-HCl buffer (0.2 g/1 mL, pH = 7.4) for 60 h to measure the activity of catK and MMPs spectrofluorometrically. In addition, three 200-µm-thick dentin slices were prepared from intact and eroded dentin for double-labeling immunofluorescence to evaluate the distribution and colocalization of catK and MMPs (MMP-2 and MMP-9). The distribution and colocalization of enzymes were analyzed using inverted confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), with colocalization rates quantified using Leica Application Suite Advanced Fluorescent (LAS AF) software. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze the fluorescence data related to enzyme activity (α = 0.05). RESULTS: The activity of catK and MMPs was significantly increased in eroded dentin compared with intact dentin. After erosive attacks, catK, MMP-2, and MMP-9 were prominently localized in the eroded regions. The colocalization rates of catK with MMP-2 and MMP-9 were 13- and 26-fold higher in eroded dentin, respectively, than in intact dentin. CONCLUSIONS: Erosive attacks amplified the activity of catK and MMPs in dentin while also altering their distribution patterns. Colocalization between catK and MMPs increased following erosive attacks. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: CatK, MMP-2, and MMP-9 likely play synergistic roles in the pathophysiology of dentin erosion.

This study aimed to estimate the cumulative incidence and the progression of erosive tooth wear (ETW) according to tooth type over a follow-up period of 18 months in adolescents living in Mexico City. We examined 10,776 teeth from 424 participants and used the Basic Erosive Wear Examination index (BEWE) to assess ETW. Our results showed that the overall cumulative incidence rate of ETW was 5.9% (587 from 9933 teeth), and the progression of ETW was 10% (85 from 843 teeth). Notably, the cumulative incidence of initial texture loss (BEWE = 1) was 29.1% for maxillary central incisors, and 30.4% of mandibular first molars progressed to loss of hard tissues (BEWE ≥2).

Citation rates can be used as an indicator of the influence and relevance of scientific papers. The present study analyzed the 100 most-cited articles related to erosive tooth wear (ETW). The top 100 most-cited papers focusing on ETW topics were collected from the Web of Science database on November 11, 2020. The following bibliometric data were extracted from papers: title, authorship, institutions, countries, number of citations, year of publication, journal title, study design, topic, and keywords. Scopus and Google Scholar were searched to compare the number of citations. The VOSviewer software was used to generate collaborative network maps for the authors and keywords. The number of citations of the 100 most-cited papers ranged from 71 to 330 (average: 97.44). The papers were published between 1949 and 2015. Caries Research (28%) and The Journal of Dentistry (16%) presented the majority of papers. Laboratorial (44%) and observational studies (33%) were the most common study designs. The most studied topics were epidemiology (31%) and the erosive potential of substances (drinks, foods, or medicines) (22%). The countries with the highest number of most-cited papers were England (32%), Germany (18%), and Switzerland (10%). The University of Bern was the institution with the most papers (10%). Lussi A was the author with the highest number of papers in the top 100 (14%). The most common keyword was "dental erosion" with 64 occurrences. The top 100 most-cited papers related to ETW were composed mainly of laboratorial and observational studies focusing on epidemiology and the erosive potential of substances.

OBJECTIVE: To validate a questionnaire for the identification of factors associated with erosive tooth wear (ETW) in adolescents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on previous questionnaires, a 73-question instrument was designed (four domains: socio-demographics, general/oral health history, diet and oral care habits). Content validity was assessed by five external experts, and the questions' understandability was evaluated in a pilot study (10 adolescents). Three internal experts agreed on modifications. Construct validity was assessed after the resulting questionnaire was applied to 454 12- to 15-year olds from Bogotá (Colombia). Statistical analyses included exploratory factor analysis (EFA), internal consistency, and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). RESULTS: After the content validation, 52% of the questions were excluded and remaining 38 questions were adjusted. Construct validation: The EFA resulted in the regrouping of questions into the three remaining domains (KMO = 0.68; Bartlett's test: p < 0.001). Internal consistency was good (general questionnaire Cronbach's α = 0.67; individual factors' Cronbach's α = 0.30-0.69; ICC = 0.39-0.62; p < 0.001), and the model showed satisfactory fit. CFA showed good convergent and discriminatory validity suggesting the elimination of 14 additional questions (χ2 = 238.518; p > 0.086; CFI = 0.96; TLI = 0.95; RMSEA = 0.017; PRATIO = 0.76). The final validated questionnaire comprised 24 questions (general/oral health history: n = 5; dietary habits: n = 15; oral care habits: n = 4). CONCLUSION: The validation of the ETW questionnaire for adolescents was satisfactory and resulted in a short applicable questionnaire version. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study achieved a satisfactorily validated, short, and applicable questionnaire for assessing erosive tooth wear risk factors in adolescents, recommended for the clinical practice, research, and epidemiology.

OBJECTIVES: This in vitro study evaluated the efficacy of toothpaste containing fluoride (F), sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP), and xylitol and erythritol (XE) to inhibit or repair initial enamel erosion lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bovine enamel blocks (n = 120) were selected according to surface hardness (SH) and randomly divided into 5 experimental groups (n = 24 blocks/group): Placebo (no F, TMP, XE); 1100 ppm F; 16% xylitol + 4% erythritol (XE); 200 ppm F + 0.2% TMP (200 ppm F/TMP); and 200 ppm F + 0.2% TMP + 16% xylitol + 4% erythritol (200 ppm F/TMP/XE). The sound and softened blocks were immersed in toothpaste slurry in human saliva for 2 min. The blocks were then submitted to 4 erosive challenges in citric acid (0.75%, pH 3.5), each challenge for 1 min, with stirring. The SH of the blocks was determined after treatment (t) and after the 4 erosive challenges. In addition, the precipitates were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Variables were submitted to a two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance followed by a Student-Newman-Keuls test (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Toothpaste containing 200 ppm F/TMP/XE led to the highest protective and repair effect compared to the other groups (p < 0.001). The protective and repair effect was XE > 200 ppm F/TMP > 1100 ppm F > placebo (p < 0.001). All groups produced precipitates with a thicker layer for XE and TMP groups. CONCLUSIONS: Toothpaste containing 200 ppm F, TMP, and polyols demonstrated a superior protective and repair effect in initial enamel erosive lesions in vitro. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Toothpaste containing F and polyols could be an advantage in patients affected by dental erosion, due to its higher preventive potential, mainly in individuals who frequently drink acidic beverages. However, future studies are needed to confirm these results.

OBJECTIVES: The relative effect of pH and titratable acidity on tooth erosion remains unclear. We determined the effect of both properties on in vivo salivary pH recovery and on enamel and dentine early erosion in situ. METHODS: Solutions simulating acidic beverages with different pHs (2.5 or 3.5) and titratable acidities (0, 25, or 100 mM citric acid) were tested. In an in vivo study (n = 20 participants), the salivary pH was determined before, during, and up to 2 min after exposure to the tested solutions. In situ, 12 participants exposed enamel and root dentine slabs to the tested solutions simulating a beverage consumption; early erosion was assessed by percentage of surface hardness loss (%SHL). Groups were compared by ANOVA (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Saliva pH was lower after exposure to solutions at pH 2.5, irrespective of titratable acidity; pH recovery took longer for solutions with higher titratable acidities, irrespective of their pHs. In situ, the highest %SHL was observed for the solution with lower pH and higher titratable acidities. The addition of citric acid increased the %SHL by 2.5-3 times in enamel, and at least 5 times in dentine. CONCLUSIONS: Both pH and titratable acidity may play a role on the erosive potential of acidic beverages. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Acidic beverages with lower pHs promote erosion by an initial acid etching of the surface; those with a higher titratable acidity slow down the salivary pH recovery. Both properties contribute to the overall erosive potential.

OBJECTIVES: Answer the question: What is the effectiveness of titanium tetrafluoride (TiF4) when compared to other fluorides, placebo solution or a negative control to prevent or treat dental caries and tooth erosion? MATERIALS AND METHODS: This review is in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. In vivo and in situ studies that used TiF4 over enamel or dentine were included. Electronic searches were conducted on MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase, WOS, Cochrane Library, VLH, Clinical Trials and OpenGrey. Risk of bias (ROB) assessments used RoB2 and ROBINS-I for randomized and non-randomized controlled trials (RCTs and on-RCTs); Syrcle's ROB tool for animal studies; and a modified tool proposed by Hollanders for in situ studies. RESULTS: A total of 28 studies met the eligibility criteria. From these, 6 were in humans (3 RCT and 3 Non-RCT); 4 were in animals and 18 were in situ. For in vivo studies, all RCTs have some concerns related to ROB and all of the non-RCT studies were classified as with serious risk. One animal study had a low and three a high ROB. Regarding in situ studies, seven had a low, ten had an average and only one had a high ROB. The certainty of the evidence (GRADE) ranged from moderate to very low. CONCLUSIONS: Although most of the results suggest a positive effect of TiF4 on the prevention and treatment of caries and dental erosion, it is not possible to have definitive conclusions due to the high studies' methodological heterogeneity, and the low quality of evidence for most outcomes. Aim: The objective was to determine the frequency pattern and nutritional quality of breakfast and snacks in Iranian adolescents and to investigate these dietary habits in relation to tooth decay and tooth erosion. Methods: A multistage cluster random sampling method was adopted to recruit 600 adolescents with equal sex distribution in the city of Kerman/southeast of Iran. Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth (DMFT) and Tooth Wear Index (TWI) were recorded for each subject. Snacking and breakfast quality, frequency of snacking and regular/irregular use of main meals were also recorded. Poisson regression and Firth's bias-reduced penalized-likelihood logistic regression were used for data analysis. Results: DMFT score of adolescents who consumed low-quality snacks were 1.13 times more than those who consumed high-quality snacks. Regular use of all three main meals was associated with a lower DMFT score. DMFT score of adolescents who did not have regular use of breakfast was 1.19 times more than those who consumed breakfast on a regular basis. Also, regarding adolescents who had an irregular use of lunch, the DMFT score was 1.3 times more than those who had a regular lunch schedule. In addition, participants with irregular dinner consumption had 1.24 times more DMFT scores compared to those with a regular dinner schedule. Conclusions: Regular breakfast consumption, decreased snacking occasions, use of higher nutritional quality snacks, and increased nutritional education are important in order to prevent a higher chance of dental caries and promote dental health status.

BACKGROUND: Erosive tooth wear has significant impacts on oral and general health. This study aimed to measure the awareness of dental erosion to establish the relationships among sociodemographic factors, awareness and knowledge of dental erosion, and beverage consumption behaviours, in a sample of university students in Australia. METHODS: All undergraduate students enrolled in the targeted programs at an Australian University were invited. A total of 418 students consented to participate. Each was assessed with an online questionnaire. RESULTS: The awareness rate of dental erosion was 92.1%. Soft drinks and fruit juice were most often perceived as acidic beverages by the respondents. The students of greater age, and studying pharmacy, paramedicine, physiotherapy or science, were less likely to be aware of dental erosion. Those students that were aware of dental erosion also had better knowledge of dental erosion, which was associated with a reduced quantity of daily acidic beverage consumption as well. The students that predominantly resided overseas had less knowledge of dental erosion. The students that were of greater age, that were studying clinical science, pharmacy, medical science, paramedicine, or science, and that correctly identified more types of acidic beverages, more often consumed acidic beverages in high-risk patterns. CONCLUSIONS: Erosive tooth wear is a relevant matter in dentistry, nutrition and public health. Within a university setting, the effect of education on oral health literacy and beverage consumption behaviour is confirmed. Dental and health professionals should actively educate the individuals and communities about dental erosion and motivate them to change acidic beverage consumption behaviours.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analyses aimed to evaluate the potential protective effect of titanium tetrafluoride (TiF4) compound compared to sodium fluoride (NaF) on eroded enamel or dentin. METHODS: Two independent reviewers searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS, Cochrane, EMBASE, and Open gray Literature up to June 2020. MeSH terms, supplementary concepts, synonyms, and free terms were applied based on PICOS strategy (P- population: eroded enamel or dentin; I- intervention: eroded teeth treated with solution or varnish of TiF4; C- comparison: eroded teeth treated with a solution or varnish of NaF; O- outcome: mineral loss measurement; S- study design: in vitro studies). Seven distinct parameters evaluated the risk of bias, and all studies were submitted to 4 meta-analyses (first and second meta-analyses related to enamel loss treated with fluoride solution or varnish, respectively; third and fourth meta-analyses related to dentin loss treated with fluoride solution or varnish, respectively). A sensitivity test was performed by the RevMan software, based on standard mean difference calculation (P < .05). RESULTS: A total of 10,260 studies were retrieved, from which 22 studies were included in systematic review through eligibility criteria, of which 1 study was classified as low risk of bias, 19 as medium, and 3 as high. Seventeen studies were included in 4 different meta-analyses, presenting considerable overall heterogeneity (I2â¯=â¯95; 92; 95; and 93%, respectively) with statistical significance for TiF4 on the first meta-analysis, and no statistical significance for second, third, and fourth meta-analyses. CONCLUSIONS: Titanium tetrafluoride compound delivered as solution provided significant effective protection for erosion lesions on the enamel surface compared to sodium fluoride. However, when TiF4 or NaF were applied on enamel or dentin surfaces as varnish, both provided the same effective protection, based on in vitro studies with considerable heterogeneity.
