INTRODUCTION: Ludwig's angina (LA) is a life-threatening infection that can affect the floor of the mouth and neck, potentially causing serious airway obstruction. In such cases, rescue airway management and oxygenation can be challenging due to swelling of the mouth floor, trismus, and limited mouth opening. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of the Trachway video-stylet (VS) and Pentax AWS hyperangulated videolaryngoscope with channel (HAVL-C) compared to the standard geometric video-laryngoscope (SGVL, Macintosh 3, Trachway) in simulating Ludwig's angina with cadavers. METHODS: Three fresh frozen cadavers were prepared with varying degrees of difficulty to simulate the airway conditions of patients with LA, including mouth floor swelling, restricted mouth opening, and trismus. Fifty-five second-year resident physicians from various specialties participated in the study and received training in airway management using SGVL, VS, and HAVL-C devices. Participants were randomly assigned to intubate simulated LA with cadavers using the three devices in a random order, and intubation times and success rates were recorded. Participants also rated the difficulty of intubation using a visual analogue scale (VAS) score. The primary outcome assessed the first-pass intubation success or failure, while the secondary outcomes measured the intubation time and subjective difficulty using a visual analogue scale with different laryngoscopes. RESULTS: The success rates for intubation within 90 s were 40% for SGVL, 82% for VS, and 76% for HAVL-C. VS and HAVL-C had significantly higher success rates than SGVL, with hazard ratios of 3.4 and 2.7, and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of 2.0-5.7 and 1.6-4.6, p < 0.001, respectively. The odds ratios of successful intubation for VS and HAVL-C were 8.1 and 6.3, respectively, with a 95% CI of 3.7-17.8 and 2.4-16.7, p < 0.001, compared to SGVL. The VAS score was significantly correlated with intubation success rate and time. CONCLUSIONS: In cases of LA, the use of VS and HAVL-C is preferable over SGVL. These findings suggest that using VS and HAVL-C can improve intubation success rates and reduce intubation time in patients with LA.

Eating behaviour in children is a matter of study for which diverse tools have been designed. Coding systems for videotaped meals allow the extraction of detailed in vivo information; however, there is no tool available for infants following a Baby-Led Weaning (BLW) method. This study aimed to create and validate a new tool to assess eating behaviour in infants during weaning, applicable regardless of the complementary feeding method. The Baby Eating Behaviour Coding System (BEBECS) was developed comprising time variables, behaviours, feeder-led actions, and other meal-related variables. Sixty videos of infants aged 6-18 months following spoon-feeding (SF) or BLW methods were coded by two trained coders. These scores were analysed together with intake and maternal ratings of liking and calmness. Additionally, combined analysis and internal comparison assessed the possible differences in BEBECS variables between SF and BLW. Inter-rater and test-retest reliability had good to excellent agreement: Cohen's Kappa >0.75, Lin's CCC >0.70, and Intraclass Correlation Coefficient >0.75, for almost all variables. Infants' liking and intake of the offered food correlated positively with meal duration and total count of mouth approaches but negatively with having leftovers and time between mouth approaches. Infants' calmness and tiredness were negatively correlated. More food than initially offered was available during the meal in BLW but not in SF. There was a tendency towards more autonomous behaviour in BLW infants regarding changes observed in the time the food was in the mouth at each stage (6, 12, and 18 months). In conclusion, BEBECS has the potential to be a valid tool for application in the research of infant eating behaviour during weaning by trained coders.

BACKGROUND: Microvascular conflicts in hemifacial spasm typically occur at the facial nerve's root exit zone. While a pure microsurgical approach offers only limited orientation, added endoscopy enhances visibility of the relevant structures without the necessity of cerebellar retraction. METHODS: After a retrosigmoid craniotomy, a microsurgical decompression of the facial nerve is performed with a Teflon bridge. Endoscopic inspection prior and after decompression facilitates optimal Teflon bridge positioning. CONCLUSIONS: Endoscope-assisted microsurgery allows a clear visualization and safe manipulation on the facial nerve at its root exit zone.

The development of contactless methods to assess the degree of personal hygiene in elderly people is crucial for detecting frailty and providing early intervention to prevent complete loss of autonomy, cognitive impairment, and hospitalisation. The unobtrusive nature of the technology is essential in the context of maintaining good quality of life. The use of cameras and edge computing with sensors provides a way of monitoring subjects without interrupting their normal routines, and has the advantages of local data processing and improved privacy. This work describes the development an intelligent system that takes the RGB frames of a video as input to classify the occurrence of brushing teeth, washing hands, and fixing hair. No action activity is considered. The RGB frames are first processed by two Mediapipe algorithms to extract body keypoints related to the pose and hands, which represent the features to be classified. The optimal feature extractor results from the most complex Mediapipe pose estimator combined with the most complex hand keypoint regressor, which achieves the best performance even when operating at one frame per second. The final classifier is a Light Gradient Boosting Machine classifier that achieves more than 94% weighted F1-score under conditions of one frame per second and observation times of seven seconds or more. When the observation window is enlarged to ten seconds, the F1-scores for each class oscillate between 94.66% and 96.35%.

Dental fear and anxiety are highly prevalent among children and have been shown to lead to irregular use of dental services. Previous research has suggested that while touch can alleviate the patient's stress and help in accomplishing dental procedures, it can also be a source of stress or used to restrain the patient. In this study, we explore the emergence and intertwine of controlling and comforting touch in pediatric dental clinic settings in which patients show signs of resistance, distress, or fear. We use microanalysis of video-recorded interactions to unveil how the adults in the room-any combination of the dentist, dental assistant, hygienist, and caregiver(s)-deploy various types of touch on the child patient to perform the dental procedure while simultaneously comforting the child. Our data set covers video-recordings of naturally occurring dental clinic visits of 3- to 12-year-old child patients from four cultural contexts: Finland, China, Iraq, and the United States. Drawing on Merleau-Ponty's writings on intercorporeality and the interaffectivity of bodies, the study proposes that touch in pediatric dentistry unfolds as complex intercorporeal formations where the interaffectivity emerges not only through touch but also via vocal resonance. In contrast to clear boundaries between comforting and controlling touch, our analysis indicates that the line between comforting and controlling touch can be blurred. We suggest that touching a pediatric patient showing resistance toward a dental procedure requires careful affective attention to the patient's subtle and moment-by-moment bodily expressions and reactions to the touch.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to examine what kinds of dental anxiety management techniques dentists use in the context of one-session treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The data consisted of videotaped treatment sessions for five dentally anxious adults. The treatment was conducted by two experienced dentists without formal training in the treatment of dentally anxious patients or behavioral management techniques. Theory-driven qualitative content analysis, based on the anxiety management classification of Milgrom et al. was used to identify and classify the techniques used during the treatments. RESULTS: Altogether, diverse categories of dental anxiety management techniques were identified under the main themes of enhancing trust and control and psychological management. Techniques that fell into enhancing trust and control included the categories of 'building a trustful relationship', 'informational control', and 'behavioral control'. These techniques were used consistently throughout the sessions. Additionally, psychological management techniques were identified and classified as 'behavioral strategies: relaxing the body' and 'cognitive strategies: relaxing the mind', which were regularly used in specific situations. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that a variety of dental anxiety management techniques were used during one-session treatments. The findings provide valuable insights for dentists in managing their patients with dental anxiety and improving their overall treatment experience.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The preservation of avulsed teeth is critical in dental trauma management, necessitating effective storage media to ensure viable tooth reimplantation. The urgent need for accurate information has led both professional and non-professional individuals to increasingly seek guidance from video-sharing platforms such as YouTube™ and TikTok™. These platforms have become key resources for advice on such dental emergencies, but the reliability and accuracy of this information have not yet been systematically evaluated. This study aimed to assess the quality, accuracy, and reliability YouTube™ and TikTok™ of videos regarding storage solutions for avulsion injuries. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A search was conducted on YouTube™ and TikTok™ on February 4th, 2023, using terms related to traumatic dental injuries, and 53 videos were included. Video demographics such as platform, duration, type, upload date, likes, and comments were recorded. Video content quality, reliability, and accuracy were measured using the Global Quality Scale (GQS), Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmarks, and Video Information and Quality Index (VIQI). Research data were analyzed using SPSS IBM 24.0 at a 95% confidence interval. RESULTS: In total, 53 videos were examined. The average scores were JAMA: 1.70/4.00, modified DISCERN: 54.3/80.00, GQS: 3.88/5.00, and VIQI: 13.8/20.00. According to the modified DISCERN index, there were no "very poor" or "poor" quality videos, 49.05% were "moderate," 22.6% were "good," and 28.3% were "very good." No difference was found between YouTube™ and TikTok™ videos in terms of the modified DISCERN index, JAMA scores, GQS, and VIQI scoring (p > .05). CONCLUSIONS: Traumatic dental injuries are a common problem among children, and evaluating the reliability of available contents is becoming crucial for appropriate intervention. The study reveals that despite being sourced mainly from dental professionals, the overall quality of videos on avulsed tooth management was mediocre, underscoring the risks associated with misleading or incomplete information in such critical situations.

BACKGROUND: Sports dentistry aims to prevent and manage orofacial injuries, tooth fractures, tooth loss, and soft tissue trauma during sport activities. Mouthguards are appliances that protect athletes from dental trauma during contact sports. The video-sharing platform YouTube has a large number of informative videos about mouthguards. This study aimed to analyze the quality, accuracy, and reliability of YouTube videos about mouthguards, investigate the relationship between the features and the quality of mouthguard videos on YouTube, and provide suggestions for future informative content about mouthguards and sports dentistry. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The first 100 videos for each keyword from YouTube were collected using the keywords "mouthguard," "sports mouthguard," and "mouthguard and dental trauma." Videos meeting the inclusion criteria were categorized based on publisher (dental professionals and nonprofessionals) and type (animation/slideshow, interview, and product introduction). Video features were recorded. Video content quality, reliability, and accuracy were measured by the Video Information and Quality Index (VIQI), the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmarks, the DISCERN Instrument, the Global Quality Scale (GQS), and the usefulness score. Data were analyzed using SPSS (IBM 29.0) at a 95% statistical significance level (p = 0.05). RESULTS: Out of 300 videos, 80 videos were included. Most of the videos were uploaded by dental professionals (n = 49). The average values of the VIQI, JAMA, DISCERN, and GQS scores were 15.33 out of 20.0, 1.38 out of 4.00, 49.24 out of 80.0, and 2.99 out of 5.00, respectively. Videos uploaded by dental professionals had significantly higher scores in VIQI, JAMA, DISCERN, GQS, and usefulness scores but exhibited a lower number of likes, comments, and views (p < 0.05). Of all included videos, 51% (n = 41) were categorized as "moderately useful" and 10% (n = 8) as "very useful." CONCLUSIONS: Mouthguard videos uploaded by dental professionals are more useful, accurate, and of higher quality. Therefore, patients should consider the information shared by dental professionals. Greater participation from dentists in sharing high-quality content would be beneficial.

INTRODUCTION: Blended learning seems to be an effective teaching concept in oral radiology. During the COVID-19 pandemic, blended learning shifted towards online-only learning. The aim of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of pandemic online-only and pre-pandemic blended learning in three consecutive oral radiology courses (C1, C2 and C3) and to examine whether additional video-based e-learning modules (VBLMs) had a positive impact on undergraduate students' performance during pandemic semesters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from 205 undergraduate dental students participating either in a blended learning or an online-only learning concept were analysed. Pre-pandemic blended learning comprised face-to-face seminars and access to an oral radiology platform (ORP). Pandemic online-only learning comprised online seminars, access to the ORP and additional VBLMs (two VBLMs for C1, four VBLMs for C2 and six VBLMs for C3). Through standardised e-exams at the beginning and end of each semester, performance in final exams and knowledge gain were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: No significant differences in scores in final exams (p = .11) and knowledge gain (p = .18) were found when comparing the pre-pandemic and pandemic groups. On course level, however, students receiving a lower number of VBLMs performed significantly worse in final exams (C1: p < .01, C2: p = .02) and showed inferior knowledge gain (C2: p < .01) during the pandemic. CONCLUSIONS: Within the limitations of the study, the present investigation confirmed that pandemic online-only learning involving VBLMs might be as effective as pre-pandemic blended learning.

OBJECTIVES: The effectiveness of mechanical tooth cleaning, which plays a crucial role in biofilm control, depends on the type of brush and technique. Parents can refer to websites such as YouTube™ for guidance on the selection and use of electric toothbrushes. The objective of this study was to examine the usefulness, quality and accuracy of the information on YouTube™ videos about electric toothbrushes for children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A search was performed on YouTube™ for English language videos using the terms 'electric toothbrush for kids' and 'kids' electric toothbrush'. From the first 100 results, 64 videos were selected for further analysis. The videos were analysed for views, likes/dislikes, number of comments, upload source, duration and time since video upload. The usefulness and the quality of the selected videos were also measured. RESULTS: The majority of the videos mentioned toothbrush design (71.9%, n = 46) and toothbrush heads (62.5%, n = 40). The videos were generally determined to be moderately useful (46.9%), whereas very useful videos were found less frequently (12.5%). Slightly useful videos were mostly uploaded by laypeople. Very useful videos had significantly higher video durations than moderately and slightly useful videos (p = 0.029 and p = 0.002, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: YouTube™ can be an important source of information for parents to learn about electric toothbrushes for their children. However, watching videos based on upload source and length of time may provide more accurate information on this topic. Also, dental healthcare professionals could be included more often to improve the usefulness and quality of the videos.

A box was designed to keep the acorn worm Saccoglossus mereschkowskii in laboratory conditions for 60 days and to monitor its behavior and feeding. Locomotion and construction of burrows in the sediment were found to be due to peristaltic movements of the proboscis, which periodically changes its shape from cylindrical to mushroom-like, and vice versa. Worms built U-shaped burrows connected with burrows of neighbor worms by flank anastomoses, thus producing a branched system of passages in a sediment layer up to 8 cm deep. The system is of importance for aeration of the upper sediment layer. When a worm is feeding, the proboscis sticks out from the anterior opening of the burrow and stretches along the surface of the sediment. Organic particles adhere to mucus secreted by the epidermal epithelium of the proboscis and are transported by ciliary beating to a furrow between the collar and proboscis, where the mouth is located.

Due to potential issues, several sleep laboratories conduct sleep bruxism diagnosis without the use of a camera, instead relying mostly on electromyographic monitoring. The purpose of the study was to determine if a camera is necessary for the polysomnographic evaluation of sleep bruxism and how sleep bruxism parameters change when a camera is not utilised. The study material was actual polysomnographic recordings made in the years 2017-2020. A total of 199 single-night video-polysomnographic recordings of patients who were suspected of having sleep bruxism were chosen at random. The first analysis involved the evaluation of the video recording, while in the second video recording was not used. The findings revealed that all the examined sleep bruxism indices had statistically significantly higher values for the recordings made without the use of a camera. According to the findings, noncamera recordings had decreased sensitivity and specificity when the criteria of bruxism and mild-to-moderate bruxism were taken into account, and decreased sensitivity in the case of the criterion of severe bruxism. Sleep efficiency, the apnea/hypopnea index, and arousals had independent effects on the bruxism episode index value in the analysis of noncamera recordings. In conclusion, camera-based polysomnography still appears to be the most reliable way to assess the severity of sleep bruxism, particularly in patients who also report other sleep disturbances. The presence of symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing, insomnia, or other sleep disorders should prompt us to use camera-based diagnostics.

BACKGROUND: Intubation is an essential procedure in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of trials and studies comparing the performance of video laryngoscope (VL) and direct laryngoscope (DL) in endotracheal intubation (ETI) during CPR in cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients. METHODS: We searched the PUBMED, EMBASE, and Cochrane library databases. We analyzed the first-pass success rate, total intubation time, Cormack-Lehane grade (CL grade), esophageal intubation rate, and dental injury rate among the in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) patients or out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients. We demonstrated the pooled results of continuous outcomes by mean difference (MD) and dichotomous outcomes by odds ratio (OR), with a 95% confidence interval (CI) using a random-effects model. RESULTS: We obtained six observational studies and one randomized control trial. The pooled results showed a significant increase in first-pass success rate (OR: 1.86, 95% CI: 1.41, 2.47), Cormack-Lehane (CL) grade (OR: 2.01, 95% CI: 1.59,2.53), and a decrease of esophageal intubation rate (OR: 0.25, 95% CI: 0.08, 0.85) in the VL group compared with DL group. Also, a non-significant decrease in dental injury rate [OR: 0.23, 95% CI: 0.05, 1.08) was observed in the VL group compared with the DL group. There was no statistical difference between the VL and DL groups, although the VL group seemed to have a shorter total intubation time (MD: -15.43, 95% CI: -34.67, 3.81). Types of laryngoscopes were not associated with the rate of ROSC [OR 1.01 (0.95,1.07); P = 0.83]. No differences in survival outcomes were observed between the two approaches. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to DL, VL was found to be associated with first-pass success and CL grade. We recommend prioritizing VL over DL when performing ETIs for patients with cardiac arrest.

AIM: The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship of video game playing with oral/dental health and harmful oral habits in school-age children. METHODS: The daily video gamer (n = 77) and occasional video gamer (n = 77) children between 6 and 12 years old were included in the study. A questionnaire inquiring socio-demographic characteristics, video gaming and abnormal oral habits of the children was filled by parents. The children were examined intraorally and decayed-missing-filled tooth, the International Caries Detection and the Assessment-II System scores, dental plaque and gingival indices were recorded. RESULTS: Of the children; 42.9% daily video gamers played video games for between 1 and 2 h and 57.1% played for ≥2 h while all of the occasional video gamers spent for between 1 and 2 h on video game per day. The daily video gamer and occasional video gamer children were not different in terms of socio-demographic characteristics, frequency of having daily tooth brushing habit, using children's toothpaste and having regular dental checkup (P > 0.05). No statistically significant difference was present between the groups in terms of frequencies of abnormal oral habits and having at least one abnormal oral habit (P > 0.05). Severe gingivitis and advanced caries lesions were more common in daily video gamer group (14.2% vs. 3.9%, P = 0.025 and 90.9% vs. 70.9%, P = 0.026, respectively). Daily video gaming time was weakly correlated with plaque index (r = 0.26, n = 77, P = 0.024). Daily video gaming for ≥2 h increased the risk for severe gingivitis (odds (95% confidence interval) = 4.53 (1.07-19.23), P = 0.041) while daily video gaming for between 1 and 2 h decreased the risk for having abnormal oral habit (odds (95% confidence interval) = 0.39 (0.16-0.93), P = 0.034). CONCLUSION: In school age, daily video gaming may worsen oral and dental health compared with occasional video gaming. Particularly, an excessive video gaming time seems to be associated with poor oral health in school children.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: Multimedia presentations and online platforms are used in dental education. Though studies indicate the benefits of video-based lectures (VBLs), data regarding user reception and optimal video features in dental education are limited, particularly on Web 2.0 platforms like YouTube. Given increasing technology integration and remote learning, dental educators need evidence to guide implementation of YouTube videos as a freely available resource. The purpose of this study is to determine video metrics, viewership and format efficacy for dental education videos. METHODS: First, a cross-sectional survey was conducted of viewers (N = 683) of the Mental Dental educational videos on YouTube. Analytics were evaluated for 677 200 viewers to assess audience demographics, retention and optimal video length. Second, a randomized crossover study was conducted of dental students (N = 101) who watched VBLs in either slideshow or pencast formats and were tested on content learning to compare format efficacy. RESULTS: Most viewers of Mental Dental videos were dental students (44.2%) and professionals (37.8%) who would likely recommend the platform to a friend or colleague (Net Promoter Score = 82.1). Audience retention declined steadily at 1.34% per minute, independent of video length. Quiz performance did not differ between slideshow and pencast videos, with students having a slight preference for slideshows (P = 0.049). CONCLUSIONS: Dental students and professionals use VBLs and are likely to recommend them to friends and colleagues. There is no optimal video length to maximize audience retention and lecture format (slideshow vs. pencast) does not significantly impact content learning. Results can guide implementation of VBLs in dental curricula.

BACKGROUND: Speech is the most common method of communication. Video-based clinical communication evaluation is a requirement for children with speech-language impairments living in rural areas, and those who have limited mobility. AIMS: To determine the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Viking Speech Scale (VSS-T) via live and video-based observation for children with cerebral palsy (CP) aged 4-18 years. METHODS & PROCEDURES: A total of 142 children (mean age 8.18 ± 3.98 years; 68 female) with CP were included in this study. Their motor, communication, visual and eating-drinking function levels and comorbidities (dental, swallowing, cognitive impairments and epilepsy) were recorded. The Intelligibility in Context Scale (ICS), the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory-Social Function (PEDI-SF), and the Functional Independence Measure for Children-Communication (WeeFIM-C) were assessed to examine the concurrent validity of the VSS-T. The interrater reliability of the VSS-T was analysed between parents, physical therapists, and speech and language therapists from live and video-based observation. Intra-rater reliability was calculated from ratings made from live and video-based observations taken 3 weeks apart. OUTCOMES & RESULTS: The VSS-T was strongly related to the ICS (r = -0.830), PEDI-SF (r = -0.819), WeeFIM-C (r = -0.643), other functional classifications (r > 0.432), and the comorbidities (Cramer's V > 0.284, p < 0.001). Good to excellent interrater reliability (κw ≥ 0.838) and intra-rater reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) = 0.848-0.995) were found between parents and therapists. CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: Speech and language therapists, physical therapists, and parents can use the VSS-T as a valid and reliable classification system to describe speech intelligibility of 4-18-year-old children with CP. Both live and video-based observations can be used to administer the VSS-T. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on the subject The English version of the VSS has been shown to be a valid and reliable tool used to classify the speech of children with CP aged 4-13 years. The scale can be administered by means of live observation of the child or based on clinicians' notes on the case by parents, SLTs, physiotherapists and paediatricians. What this paper adds to existing knowledge The VSS-T is valid and reliable for children with CP aged 4-18 years. Video-based observation is a suitable method for evaluating the VSS-T levels. The VSS-T has a moderate association with the CFCS. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work? The VSS-T is a valid and reliable method of categorizing the severity of motor speech impairment for Turkish children with CP in clinical research studies, registry systems or epidemiological studies. Both experienced and inexperienced therapists can use either live or video-based observation methods to administer the VSS-T. This study extended the validity and reliability of the scale in children with CP aged up to 18 years. The VSS-T is also associated with the Visual Functional Classification System (VFCS), which has been recently developed for describing the visual abilities of children with CP in daily life. In addition, the VSS-T is associated with the presence of dental, swallowing, cognitive problems and epilepsy.

In recent years, many things have been held via video conferences due to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic around the world. A webcam will be used in conjunction with a computer and the Internet. However, the network camera cannot automatically turn and cannot lock the screen to the speaker. Therefore, this study uses the objection detector YOLO to capture the upper body of all people on the screen and judge whether each person opens or closes their mouth. At the same time, the Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) is used to detect the angle of the sound source. Finally, the person's position obtained by YOLO is reversed to the person's position in the spatial coordinates through the distance between the person and the camera. Then, the spatial coordinates are used to calculate the angle between the person and the camera through inverse trigonometric functions. Finally, the angle obtained by the camera, and the angle of the sound source obtained by the microphone array, are matched for positioning. The experimental results show that the recall rate of positioning through YOLOX-Tiny reached 85.2%, and the recall rate of TDOA alone reached 88%. Integrating YOLOX-Tiny and TDOA for positioning, the recall rate reached 86.7%, the precision rate reached 100%, and the accuracy reached 94.5%. Therefore, the method proposed in this study can locate the speaker, and it has a better effect than using only one source.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Evaluate the informative content in tooth avulsion videos intended for dentists available on YouTube™ and analyse their compliance with the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) guidelines 2020. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Google Trends was used to identify the most searched term for tooth avulsion. Tooth avulsion-related videos in Brazilian Portuguese intended for dentists were searched on YouTube™ with a 12-month filter. Two raters reviewed these videos to extract their features and evaluate and qualify them with two 9-point checklists based on the IADT 2020 guidelines. The emergency steps for tooth avulsion at the accident site were assessed before, during and after clinical management; each step received 1 point if present and 0 points if absent. The final score ranged from 0 to 9 points on each checklist (18 points total), and the total score was used to classify the videos as having poor, moderate or rich content. Reliability and video quality were evaluated by an adapted version of the DISCERN tool and global quality scale (GQS), respectively. The data were analysed with the Mann-Whitney U-test, Pearson chi-square test, and the Kappa statistic (p < .05). RESULTS: Of 60 videos, 8 were included. All were uploaded by dental professionals or undergraduate students; the average duration was 11 min (range: 0.40-65 min), and the average number of views was 56.75. Half the videos (50%) had maximum completeness scores for questions about emergency dentist referral before clinical management, and more than half (75%) had maximum completeness regarding the steps required during and after treatment. Rich videos had higher GQS scores (p = .049) without significant correlation. CONCLUSIONS: Although most videos in Brazilian Portuguese were considered high-quality according to the IADT checklist, half of them presented partial absence of information regarding orientations at the accident site.

INTRODUCTION: Local anaesthesia is considered essential knowledge within the dental profession as it helps to address pain management. Operator percutaneous needlestick injuries associated with the delivery of dental anaesthesia are common for dental healthcare providers. The study proposes a supplemental technique to reduce self-inducing novice operator needlestick injury to complement existing pedagogies for the preclinical local anaesthesia curriculum. The purpose of the study is to evaluate whether a local anaesthesia behavioural video can navigate students to safer clinical practice. Further, a supplemental technique is proposed in whether assessing instrument retraction technique in clinical patient care leads to decreased self-inducing intraoral needle stick injury for novice predoctoral dental operator. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Beginning in 2011, predoctoral dental students were asked to view a "what not to do" video within a summative assessment and identify at least five behaviours that were unacceptable errors for delivering local anaesthesia. Operator intraoral needlestick injury was also tracked per the bloodborne exposure reports within predoctoral patient clinics. RESULTS: Data from the learners' responses identified progression in recognising unacceptable errors from behavioural video. Intraoral needlestick injury, 8 and 9 years prior and after the introduction of video showed significance with a low correlation coefficient. CONCLUSION: More data need to be gathered and evaluated in other dental school settings to determine whether this supplemental educational video decreases needlestick injury in novice operators. Results suggest this behavioural video may guide novice operators to overall safer clinical practice.

INTRODUCTION: Of 360° Virtual Reality (VR) is possibly produced and sufficiently effective as a consumer-friendly VR learning medium. Therefore, it is also expected to be useful in the dental practice field, as a self-learning medium for non-face-to-face skill training during the ongoing pandemic (COVID-19). Accordingly, this study was conducted to assess 360° VR self-learning media for a periodontal instrument operation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We recruited 30 participants who had never experienced instrument training. We offered basic education and initial assessment (IA), then divided them into three groups: 1) PAPER: trained only with paper handouts; 2) 2D: trained with 2D video; 3) VR: trained with 360° VR. Each group performed self-learning and mid-term assessment (MA). Subjects then implemented home self-learning with the same media for one week, which was then followed by a final assessment (FA). RESULT: Analysis of IA-to-FA improvement scores showed that VR and 2D video were significantly higher than the PAPER groups. Meanwhile, analysis of MA-to-FA improvement scores showed that only VR was substantially higher than the PAPER group. Although VR and 2D video groups were not considerably different, VR scores were numerically higher than 2D video in all improvement score analyses. DISCUSSION: Both 2D video and 360° VR training were helpful to participants for an effective self-learning and also had good portability and accessibility as online-based learning methods. 360° VR showed higher learning efficiency than regular 2D video, possibly due to its autonomy, 360° visual information and physical and immersive characteristics, which positively affected self-training. CONCLUSION: Our findings showed the potential of 360° VR learning media and, further, suggest its usefulness as a novel self-learning method in future dental education.
