RESUMEN

Cellular senescence refers to an irreversible state of cell-cycle arrest and plays important roles in aging and cancer biology. Because senescence is associated with increased cell size, we used reversible cell-cycle arrests combined with growth rate modulation to study how excessive growth affects proliferation. We find that enlarged cells upregulate p21, which limits cell-cycle progression. Cells that re-enter the cell cycle encounter replication stress that is well tolerated in physiologically sized cells but causes severe DNA damage in enlarged cells, ultimately resulting in mitotic failure and permanent cell-cycle withdrawal. We demonstrate that enlarged cells fail to recruit 53BP1 and other non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) machinery to DNA damage sites and fail to robustly initiate DNA damage-dependent p53 signaling, rendering them highly sensitive to genotoxic stress. We propose that an impaired DNA damage response primes enlarged cells for persistent replication-acquired damage, ultimately leading to cell division failure and permanent cell-cycle exit.

RESUMEN

TLR7 recognizes pathogen-derived single-stranded RNA (ssRNA), a function integral to the innate immune response to viral infection. Notably, TLR7 can also recognize self-derived ssRNA, with gain-of-function mutations in human TLR7 recently identified to cause both early-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and neuromyelitis optica. Here, we describe two novel mutations in TLR7, F507S and L528I. While the L528I substitution arose de novo, the F507S mutation was present in three individuals from the same family, including a severely affected male, notably given that the TLR7 gene is situated on the X chromosome and that all other cases so far described have been female. The observation of mutations at residues 507 and 528 of TLR7 indicates the importance of the TLR7 dimerization interface in maintaining immune homeostasis, where we predict that altered homo-dimerization enhances TLR7 signaling. Finally, while mutations in TLR7 can result in SLE-like disease, our data suggest a broader phenotypic spectrum associated with TLR7 gain-of-function, including significant neurological involvement.

The monkeypox virus (MPXV) outbreak, primarily endemic to Africa, has spread globally, with Brazil reporting the second-highest number of cases. The emergence of MPXV in non-endemic areas has raised concerns, particularly due to the co-circulation of other exanthematous viruses such as varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and molluscum contagiosum virus (MOCV). To perform an accurate differential diagnosis of MPXV during the ongoing outbreak in Minas Gerais, Brazil, a 5PLEX qPCR assay targeting orthopoxviruses (OPV), VZV, and MOCV was used to retrospectively analyze all clinical samples that tested negative for MPXV in the initial screening conducted at Funed. In summary, our study analyzed 1,175 clinical samples received from patients suspected of MPXV infection and found a positivity rate of 33.8% (397 samples) for MPXV using the non-variola qPCR assay. Testing the 778 MPXV-negative clinical samples using the 5PLEX qPCR assay revealed that 174 clinical samples (22.36%) tested positive for VZV. MOCV DNA was detected in 13 and other OPV in 3 clinical samples. The sequencing of randomly selected amplified clinical samples confirmed the initial molecular diagnosis. Analysis of patient profiles revealed a significant difference in the median age between groups testing positive for MPXV and VZV and a male predominance in MPXV cases. The geographic distribution of positive cases was concentrated in the most populous mesoregions of Minas Gerais state. This study highlights the challenges posed by emerging infectious diseases. It emphasizes the importance of epidemiological surveillance and accurate diagnosis in enabling timely responses for public health policies and appropriate medical care. IMPORTANCE: Brazil ranks second in the number of cases during the global monkeypox epidemic. The study, conducted in Minas Gerais, the second most populous state in Brazil with over 20 million inhabitants, utilized differential diagnostics, revealing a significant number of positive cases for other exanthematous viruses and emphasizing the need for accurate diagnoses. During the study, we were able to assess the co-circulation of other viruses alongside monkeypox, including varicella-zoster virus, molluscum contagiosum virus, and other orthopoxviruses. The significance of the research is underscored by the concentration of positive cases in populous areas, highlighting the challenges posed by emerging infectious diseases. This demographic context further amplifies the importance of the research in guiding public health policies and medical interventions, given the substantial population at risk. The study not only addresses a global concern but also holds critical implications for a state with such a large population and geographic expanse within Brazil. Overall, the study emphasizes the pivotal role of surveillance and precise diagnosis in guiding effective public health responses and ensuring appropriate medical interventions.

BACKGROUND: Transfusion-transmitted malaria (TTM) is a public health problem in endemic and nonendemic areas. The Brazilian Ministry of Health (MH) requested the development of a nucleic acid amplification test (NAT) for the detection of Plasmodium spp. in public blood centers to increase blood safety. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The new Brazilian NAT kit named NAT PLUS HIV/HBV/HCV/Malaria Bio-Manguinhos was first implemented in HEMORIO, a public blood center in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Since October 1, 2022, this blood center has been testing all its blood donations for malaria in a pool of six plasma samples to detect Plasmodium spp. by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). RESULTS: Since the implementation of the NAT PLUS platform until February 2023, HEMORIO has successfully received and tested 200,277 donations. The platform detected two asymptomatic donors in the city of Rio de Janeiro, which is a nonendemic region for malaria. Our analyses suggested a malaria from the Amazon region caused by Plasmodium vivax, in the first case, while an autochthonous transmission case by Plasmodium malariae was identified in the rural area of Rio de Janeiro state. DISCUSSION: The NAT PLUS platform detects Plasmodium spp. in plasma samples with sensitivity capable of detecting subpatent infections. This is the first time worldwide that a group developed and implemented molecular diagnosis for Plasmodium spp. to be used by public blood centers to avoid TTM.

This case report details the management of a 79-year-old male with recurrent methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus capitis bacteremia and endocarditis. The patient's clinical journey encompassed multiple hospital admissions, with challenges in managing endocarditis, pacemaker replacements, and potential cutaneous sources of infection. The treatment regimen included intravenous antibiotic therapy during hospitalization and suppressive antibiotic treatment upon discharge, alongside a decolonization strategy for his scalp lesions.

In Mexico, there are no official public and reliably reported data on the total number and species of non-human animals used for scientific purposes. The aim of the current study was to calculate the total numbers of animals used for scientific and educational purposes in Mexico, from January 2015 to October 2021, based on data requested from the National Institute of Transparency, Access to Information and Protection of Personal Data (INAI, in Spanish). In this period, authorised laboratory animal facilities reported the use of 5,437,263 animals for scientific and educational purposes. However, these data should be viewed with caution, since there is no official register of all Mexican institutions that use animals for these purposes. The use of various species of different taxonomic groups was reported, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates. The main scientific purposes of this animal use were: technological development; innovation; laboratory testing; production of biologicals; quality control; diagnostic purposes; basic and applied research; and education. A robust system for the licensing and approval of animal use, as well as a means to ensure compliance with the relevant regulations, are both urgently required. In addition, in order to regulate animal use, monitor animal care and protect their welfare, the creation of a publicly accessible national database that records the number and species of the animals used is imperative.

Graphene materials, used as electrocatalyst support in green hydrogen production, contribute to increasing the efficiency and robustness of various systems. However, the preparation of a hybrid catalyst containing graphene materials from industrial wastes is still a challenge due to the heterogeneity of the waste. We report the synthesis of 3D electrodes using graphene oxides (GOs) from industrial waste (IW) prepared by immersion onto Toray carbon paper as a 3D support onto GO suspensions and electrodepositing NiFe layered double hydroxides (LDHs). Standard graphite was also used as the reference. The morphology of the two hybrid electrodes was determined by SEM, HRTEM, XPS. Although very similar in both, the sample containing graphene from IW (higher Csp3 hybridization in the graphene layer) has a NiFe phase with less crystallinity and larger presence of Fe2+ ions. These electrodes exhibited similar activity and stability as electrocatalysts of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), demonstrating the proactive effect of the graphene into the 3D electrode even when this is prepared from heterogeneous industrial waste. Moreover, the defective graphenic structure of the waste GO enhances the reaction kinetics and improves the electron transfer rate, possibly due to the small differences in the electrodeposited NiFe LDH structure.

In Mexico, it is not known which institutions use animals for scientific purposes. This work reports, based on data requested from the National Institute of Transparency, Access to Information and Protection of Personal Data (INAI), the types of institutions that use animals for research and how many of these have an ethics committee. Research centres, colleges, hospitals, national institutes, technical colleges, and public universities are the types of institutions that report using animals for experimentation. Only 54% of institutions have ethics committees. Mexican institutions from 2015 to 2021 used a total of 2,112,786 animals. Mammals are the most widely used animal group. The scientific purposes for using animals depend on the type of institution that uses them. In Mexico, it is necessary to update the regulations in order to regulate the use, protection and the care of laboratory animals.


En México se desconoce cuáles son las instituciones que utilizan animales con fines científicos. Se reporta, a partir de datos solicitados al Instituto Nacional de Transparencia, Acceso a la Información y Protección de Datos Personales (INAI), los tipos de instituciones que usan animales y cuántas poseen un comité interno para el cuidado y uso de los animales de laboratorio. Los centros de investigación, colegios, hospitales, institutos nacionales, tecnológicos y universidades públicas son los tipos de instituciones que reportaron usar animales. El 54% de las instituciones poseen comités de ética. Un total de 2,112,786 animales fueron usados por instituciones del 2015 al 2021. Los mamíferos es el grupo animal más utilizado. El uso de los animales se encuentra en función del tipo de institución que los utiliza. En México, es necesario actualizar la normatividad, con el fin de regular el uso, la protección y el cuidado de los animales de laboratorio.

OBJECTIVES: To identify the variables associated with the development of haematological manifestations in the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs) in a paediatric cohort. METHODS: We conducted a multicentric retrospective cohort study of children under the age of 18 years. RESULTS: One hundred and thirty-four children were included; 12.2% had at least one thrombotic event (TE) and 67% at least one non-criterion manifestation. Of them, 90% did not develop any TE. Haematological manifestations were the most frequent (42%), followed by neurological (19.8%), cutaneous (17.6%), cardiac (16.8%) and renal (1.5%) manifestations. In those children with haematological disorders, the aPLs positivity rate was: 67.3% LA, 65.6% aß2GPI, 60% aCL, 45.5% single, 23.6% double and 30.9% triple. A univariate analysis showed that children with IgM aCL+, IgM aß2GPI+, triple positivity and with a SLE diagnosis had a significantly higher frequency of haematological manifestations (p<0.05). Finally, a stepwise regression analysis identified IgG aß2GPI positivity [OR 2.91, 95% CI (1.26-6.74), p=0.013], SLE [OR 2.67, 95% CI (1.13-6.3), p=0.026] and LA positivity [OR 2.53, 95% CI (1.08-5.94), p=0.033] as independent risk factors for the development of haematological manifestations. CONCLUSIONS: Non-criteria manifestations and among them haematological disorders, are the most frequent events in the presence of aPLs and/or LA in our paediatric cohort. Children with SLE, LA and/or IgG aß2GPI positivity showed a higher risk of haematological manifestations.

BACKGROUND: Human monkeypox has become increasingly frequent worldwide since the outbreak was first reported in May 2022. OBJECTIVES: As cidofovir is effective against vaccinia and other Orthopoxvirus diseases, we hypothesize that its topical use could be an effective treatment for monkeypox skin lesions, avoiding the adverse effects of systemic administration. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study to collect data on the clinical and virologic course of patients with monkeypox. All patients were offered symptomatic treatment. They were also offered treatment with topical cidofovir on a compassionate use basis. Twelve patients received treatment with topical cidofovir 1%, while the others received only symptomatic treatment. Prospective visits were scheduled for the collection of clinical and virological data. RESULTS: Lesions cleared quicker in the cidofovir-treated group (hazard ratio, 4.572; P = .0039). The median time to resolution was 12 (11.5-15) and 18 (16-21) days, respectively. On day 14, polymerase chain reaction-positive skin lesions were detected in 10% of the cidofovir sample, compared with 62.5% of the non-treated group (P = .019). Local adverse effects were frequent (50%), especially in the anogenital region. No systemic adverse effects were reported. LIMITATIONS: The study is not a clinical trial and lacks a placebo-controlled arm. DISCUSSION: Topical cidofovir is a potentially relevant therapy in patients with skin lesions but mild systemic involvement. Reducing time to resolution could shorten isolation time and improve the cosmetic impact in areas such as the face.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants of concern (VOCs) has changed unevenly over time around the world. Although whole genome sequencing is the gold standard for virus characterisation, the discovery of alpha VOC causing spike gene target failure (SGTF) result, when tested using an reverse transcription real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) assay, has provided a simple tool for tracking the frequencies of variants. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate if a multiplex RT-qPCR assay (BioM 4Plex VOC) could be used to detect SARS-CoV-2 and to perform a VOC screening test in a single reaction tube. Here, we present the multicentre study evaluating this assay. METHODS: Twelve laboratories have participated in the multicentre study. The BioM 4Plex VOC was distributed to them with detailed instructions of how to perform the test. They were asked to test the BioM 4Plex VOC in parallel with their routine Commercial SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic assay. Additionally, they were requested to select SARS-CoV-2-positive samples with genome sequenced and lineage definition according to PANGO lineage classification. FINDINGS: The BioM 4Plex VOC and commercial RT-PCR assay are equally effective in detecting SARS-CoV-2. Results revealed a specificity of 96.5-100% [95% confidence interval (CI)], a sensitivity of 99.8-100% (95% CI), and an accuracy of 99.8-100% (95% CI). A 99% concordance rate was found between results from the BioM 4Plex VOC and that from available genome sequencing data. MAIN CONCLUSIONS: The BioM 4Plex VOC provides an effective solution to detect SARS-CoV-2 infections and screening for VOCs in a single reaction. It is a straightforward method to help us monitor the frequency and distribution of VOCs and develop strategies to better cope with the pandemics.

BACKGROUND: Multisystemic inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a life-threatening disease that occurs 2-5 weeks after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 exposure and is characterized by severe multisystemic inflammation. Early recognition of MIS-C is key to prognosis; therefore, establishing clinical and laboratory biomarkers that predict complications is urgently needed. OBJECTIVE: We characterized the immune response and clinical features of patients with acute MIS-C and determined biomarkers of disease in a cohort of 42 Latin American patients. METHODS: Immune characterization was performed using flow cytometry from peripheral mononuclear cells and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2-specific humoral and cellular response was performed using flow cytometry, enzyme-linked immunospot, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and neutralizing antibody assays. RESULTS: MIS-C is characterized by robust T-cell activation and cytokine storm. We uncovered that while C-X-C motif chemokine ligand (CXCL) 9, IL-10, CXCL8, CXCL10, IL-6, and IL-18 are significantly elevated in patients with shock, while CCL5 was increased in milder disease. Monocyte dysregulation was specifically associated with KD-like MIS-C. Interestingly, MIS-C patients show a natural killer cell degranulation defect that is persistent after 6 months of disease presentation, suggesting it could underlie disease susceptibility. Most MIS-C had gastrointestinal involvement, and higher levels of neopterin were identified in their stools, potentially representing a biomarker of intestinal inflammation in MIS-C. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2-specific cellular response and neutralizing antibodies were identifiable in convalescent MIS-C patients, suggesting sustained immunity. CONCLUSION: Clinical characterization and comprehensive immunophenotyping of Chilean MIS-C cohort provide valuable insights in understanding immune dysregulation in MIS-C and identify relevant biomarkers of disease that could be used to predict severity and organ involvement.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the variables associated with the development of non-criteria manifestations in the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs) in a paediatric cohort. METHODS: Multicentric historical cohort study of children under the age of 18 years to determine thrombotic events (TEs) and non-criteria manifestations in the presence of aPL. RESULTS: Eighty-two children were included; 8.5% had at least one TE and 69.5% at least one non-criteria manifestation. Of them, 96.5% did not associate TEs. Haematological manifestations were the most frequent (43.65%), followed by cutaneous (22%), neurological (15.9%) and cardiac (4.9%) events. The most frequent aPLs were: 77.8% LA; 42.7% aCL and 41.5% aß2GP. The positivity rate was: 64.6% simple, 18.3% double and 17.1% triple. ANA positivity was 68.1%. A bivariate analysis revealed that children with IgM aCL+, IgM aß2GP+, ANA+, an SLE diagnosis or the absence of TEs had a significantly higher percentage of non-criteria manifestations (P <0.05). The logistic regression showed family history of autoimmune diseases [odds ratio (OR) 4.26, 95% CI: 0.8, 22.2, P =0.086] and the absence of TEs (OR 17.18, 95% CI: 1.2, 244.6, P =0.03) as independent risk factors of developing non-criteria manifestations. An SLE diagnosis, aPL profile and ANA+ were not identified. CONCLUSION: Non-criteria manifestations were more frequent than TEs. A positive family history of autoimmune diseases and the absence of TEs were associated with a higher risk of developing non-criteria manifestations. Therefore, their inclusion as APS classification criteria should be considered in order to get an improved prognosis in the paediatric population.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa has a prevalence of 0.5-3% in adolescents, placing this population at increased risk of cardiac anomalies including arrhythmias, pericardial effusion, and myocardial dysfunction. Our objective is to describe cardiovascular anomalies observed by tissue Doppler imaging in patients with anorexia nervosa. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed electrocardiogram, Holter, and echocardiography findings in 28 patients diagnosed with anorexia nervosa. RESULTS: Electrocardiogram was abnormal in 71% of patients with sinus bradycardia observed in 57%. Holter confirmed sinus bradycardia without significant pauses. Prolonged QTc, low voltage, and ectopic beats were each seen in 14% of patients. Wenckebach atrioventricular block was observed in one patient. Supraventricular or ventricular tachycardia was not observed. Echocardiography showed structurally normal heart in all patients. Pericardial effusion was seen in 7.1% of patients and left ventricular mass was decreased in 10.7%. Mean ejection fraction was 0.73 and mean fractional shortening was 38.4%. Tissue Doppler imaging revealed systolic or diastolic dysfunction in four patients with e', a', and s' velocities in the lateral and septal basal segments more than two standard deviations below the mean. Two patients had decreased left ventricular mass but no significant difference in disease duration from the group. Basal segment velocities below one standard deviation were also observed in an additional seven patients. CONCLUSION: A trend for decreased tissue Doppler imaging velocities was seen in 25.0% of patients, while significant systolic and diastolic dysfunction was seen in 14.3% of patients, associated with a significant reduction in left ventricular mass and independent of disease duration.

BACKGROUND: Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) is in growing recognition as potential marker for cancer progression, differentiation and therapeutic intervention. No information is available about AQP4 expression in the normal canine brain. The aim of this histopathological study is to confirm the presence of AQP4 by immunohistochemistry technique in a group of non-pathological canine brains and to describe its expression and distribution across the brain. RESULTS: Twelve non-pathological canine brains of various ages (ranging from 21 days to 17 years) and breeds were included in the study. Immunohistochemical expression of AQP4 was analyzed using formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded brain tissue sections. The findings were correlated between AQP4 expressing cells and astrocytes using glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). AQP4 expression was more marked in the astrocyte foot processes of subpial, perivascular and periventricular surfaces in all specimens. The majority of the canine brain sections (9/12) presented with an AQP4 predilection for white matter tracts. Interestingly, the two youngest dogs (21 days and 3 months old) were characterized by diffuse AQP4 labelling in both grey and white matter tracts. This result may suggest that brain development and ageing may play a role in the AQP4 distribution throughout the canine brain. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to describe immunohistochemical distribution of AQP4 in normal canine brains. The AQP4 expression and distribution in non-pathological canine brains was comparable to other species. Larger studies are needed to substantiate the influence of breed and ageing on AQP4 expression in the normal canine brain.

ABSTRACT: Cutaneous Kaposi sarcoma (KS) covers a broad spectrum both clinically and pathologically. Some histological patterns of KS may be difficult to recognize and must be differentiated from other vascular neoplasms. We report on a 56-year-old Peruvian man who had been diagnosed with classical KS on the right foot 2 years before the present episode. He presented in our clinic with new lesions on the left foot. Histopathological findings included areas showing epithelioid cells with moderate pleomorphism, growing in solid sheets. Immunohistochemistry showed strong nuclear staining with a granular nuclear staining pattern for human herpesvirus 8 in the epithelioid cells. A diagnosis of epithelioid Kaposi sarcoma was made, which should be considered a new histological variant.

BACKGROUND: The Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS) is an instrument that can be easily applied for routine evaluation of the impact of mental disorders on patient functioning. In spite of the interest in its use, there is very little information available on its psychometric characteristics and even less in Spanish. AIMS: The objective of this study was to analyse its psychometric characteristics. METHOD: The sample consisted of 441 patients treated in a community mental health unit. They filled out the WSAS and two psychopathology measures, one for anxiety and the other for depression. Fifty-five of them, chosen at random, were asked to fill out the scale again a second time to explore its temporal reliability. RESULTS: The scale showed high internal consistency, a single factor that explained 60.4% of the variance, and temporal reliability of .78 for the total score. Significant correlations were found between the WSAS scores and the psychopathological measures, as well as significant differences between those working and those on leave. CONCLUSIONS: The results confirm the validity and reliability of the scale and support its possible use for routine evaluation of the functional impact of mental disorders.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The Endoscopic Resection Group of the Spanish Society of Endoscopy (GSEED-RE) model and the Australian Colonic Endoscopic Resection (ACER) model were proposed to predict delayed bleeding (DB) after EMR of large superficial colorectal lesions, but neither has been validated. We validated and updated these models. METHODS: A multicenter cohort study was performed in patients with nonpedunculated lesions ≥20 mm removed by EMR. We assessed the discrimination and calibration of the GSEED-RE and ACER models. Difficulty performing EMR was subjectively categorized as low, medium, or high. We created a new model, including factors associated with DB in 3 cohort studies. RESULTS: DB occurred in 45 of 1034 EMRs (4.5%); it was associated with proximal location (odds ratio [OR], 2.84; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.31-6.16), antiplatelet agents (OR, 2.51; 95% CI, .99-6.34) or anticoagulants (OR, 4.54; 95% CI, 2.14-9.63), difficulty of EMR (OR, 3.23; 95% CI, 1.41-7.40), and comorbidity (OR, 2.11; 95% CI, .99-4.47). The GSEED-RE and ACER models did not accurately predict DB. Re-estimation and recalibration yielded acceptable results (GSEED-RE area under the curve [AUC], .64 [95% CI, .54-.74]; ACER AUC, .65 [95% CI, .57-.73]). We used lesion size, proximal location, comorbidity, and antiplatelet or anticoagulant therapy to generate a new model, the GSEED-RE2, which achieved higher AUC values (.69-.73; 95% CI, .59-.80) and exhibited lower susceptibility to changes among datasets. CONCLUSIONS: The updated GSEED-RE and ACER models achieved acceptable prediction levels of DB. The GSEED-RE2 model may achieve better prediction results and could be used to guide the management of patients after validation by other external groups. BACKGROUND: Malaria can be transmitted by blood transfusion through donations collected from asymptomatic donors. Transfusion-transmitted malaria (TTM) poses a great risk to blood services worldwide. A good screening tool for Plasmodium spp. detection in blood banks must have a high sensitivity for prevention of TTM. However, in Brazilian blood banks, screening for malaria still relies on microscopy. METHODS: In Brazil, screening for human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV), RNA/DNA for hepatitis C (HCV) and hepatitis B (HBV) viruses is mandatory for every blood donation and uses nucleic acid amplification testing (NAT). The aim of this study was to evaluate the inclusion of an assay for malaria to identify Plasmodium sp. from total nucleic acid (TNA; DNA/RNA) by targeting the 18S rRNA gene of the parasite. RESULTS: Considering the limitations of microscopy and the wide availability of the Brazilian NAT platform in the screening of blood units for HIV, HCV, and HBV, a molecular diagnostic tool was validated for detection of Plasmodium sp. in blood banks; a pilot study showed that using this novel NAT assay could reduce the risk of TTM. CONCLUSION: The prototype HIV/HCV/HBV/malaria NAT assay was effective in detecting infected candidate donors and has good prospects to be applied in routine screening for preventing TTM.
