BACKGROUND: The immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) of colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major hurdle for immune checkpoint inhibitor-based therapies. Hence characterization of the signaling pathways driving T cell exhaustion within TME is a critical need for the discovery of novel therapeutic targets and the development of effective therapies. We previously showed that (i) the adaptor protein Rai is a negative regulator of T cell receptor signaling and T helper 1 (Th1)/Th17 cell differentiation; and (ii) Rai deficiency is implicated in the hyperactive phenotype of T cells in autoimmune diseases. METHODS: The expression level of Rai was measured by qRT-PCR in paired peripheral blood T cells and T cells infiltrating tumor tissue and the normal adjacent tissue in CRC patients. The impact of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α on Rai expression was evaluated in T cells exposed to hypoxia and by performing chromatin immunoprecipitation assays and RNA interference assays. The mechanism by which upregulation of Rai in T cells promotes T cell exhaustion were evaluated by flow cytometric, qRT-PCR and western blot analyses. RESULTS: We show that Rai is a novel HIF-1α-responsive gene that is upregulated in tumor infiltrating lymphocytes of CRC patients compared to patient-matched circulating T cells. Rai upregulation in T cells promoted Programmed cell Death protein (PD)-1 expression and impaired antigen-dependent degranulation of CD8+ T cells by inhibiting phospho-inactivation of glycogen synthase kinase (GSK)-3, a central regulator of PD-1 expression and T cell-mediated anti-tumor immunity. CONCLUSIONS: Our data identify Rai as a hitherto unknown regulator of the TME-induced exhausted phenotype of human T cells.

OBJECTIVES: We characterized the microbiota in SSc, focusing on the skin-oral-gut axis and the serum and faecal free fatty acid (FFA) profile. METHODS: Twenty-five SSc patients with ACA or anti-Scl70 autoantibodies were enrolled. The microbiota of faecal, saliva and superficial epidermal samples was assessed through next-generation sequencing analysis. GC-MS was used to quantify faecal and serum FFAs. Gastrointestinal symptoms were investigated with the University of California Los Angeles Scleroderma Clinical Trial Consortium Gastrointestinal Tract Instrument (UCLA GIT-2.0) questionnaire. RESULTS: The ACA+ and anti-Scl70+ groups displayed different cutaneous and faecal microbiota profiles. The classes of cutaneous Sphingobacteriia and Alphaproteobacteria, the faecal phylum Lentisphaerae, the levels of the classes Lentisphaeria and Opitutae, and the genus NA-Acidaminococcaceae were significantly higher in faecal samples from the ACA+ patients than in samples from the anti-Scl70+ patients. The cutaneous Sphingobacteria and the faecal Lentisphaerae were significantly correlated (rho = 0.42; P = 0.03). A significant increase in faecal propionic acid was observed in ACA+ patients. Moreover, all levels of faecal medium-chain FFAs and hexanoic acids were significantly higher in the ACA+ group than in the anti-Scl70+ group (P < 0.05 and P < 0.001, respectively). In the ACA+ group, the analysis of the serum FFA levels showed an increasing trend in valeric acid. CONCLUSION: Different microbiota signatures and FFA profiles were found for the two groups of patients. Despite being in different body districts, the cutaneous Sphingobacteria and faecal Lentisphaerae appear interdependent.

BACKGROUND: Twin pregnancies are associated with complications and adverse outcomes. The number of twin pregnancies has increased in the last decades, due to the use of assisted reproductive techniques and delayed childbearing. Analysis of changes that occur during twin pregnancy progression and their association with outcome will lead to improved clinical interventions. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated if the plasma concentration of select cytokines and the level of sequestosome-1 (p62) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) during each trimester of twin gestations was predictive of pregnancy outcome. STUDY DESIGN: This prospective, observational study was conducted at Careggi University Hospital, Florence, Italy. Plasma from 82 women with twin pregnancies was collected in each trimester for measurement of interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, IL-10, IL-12 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α. The intracellular PBMC concentration of p62, a protein involved in autophagy, kinase activity and cell differentiation, was also determined. RESULTS: IL-1ß (p < 0.001), IL-6 (p < 0.001), TNF-α (p < 0.001) and p62 (p < 0.05) increased from the 1st to the 2nd to the 3rd trimester. The TNF-α level was correlated with the IL-1ß concentration in the 1st and 3rd trimesters p < 0.01) and with the IL-6 concentration in each of the three trimesters (p < 0.01). The intracellular p62 level in PBMCs was negatively correlated with the concentration of IL-1ß in the 2nd trimester (p < 0.05) and negatively correlated with the IL-6 level in the 3rd trimester (p < 0.05). The TNF-α level was significantly higher in the 2nd (p < 0.05) and 3rd (p < 0.001) trimester in women with a spontaneous preterm delivery. The TNF-α concentrations in the 2nd (p < 0.05) and 3rd (p < 0.01) trimester, respectively, and 3rd trimester IL-6 (p < 0.01), were negatively associated with gestational age at delivery. The concentration of IL-6 was highest in the 2nd (p < 0.05) and 3rd (p < 0.05) trimesters in women who utilized assisted reproductive technologies. An elevated IL-1ß level in the 3rd trimester was associated with gestational diabetes mellitus (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Variations in cytokine levels between individual women during the three trimesters of twin gestations are predictive of spontaneous preterm delivery and the onset of gestational diabetes.

Free fatty acids (FFA) have gained research interest owing to their functions in both local and systemic immune regulation. Changes in the serum levels of anti-inflammatory short chain fatty acids (SCFA), primarily derived from the gut microbiota, and pro-inflammatory medium (MCFA) and long (LCFA) chain fatty acids, derived from either the gut microbiota or the diet, have been associated with autoimmunity. Circulating FFA were retrospectively analysed by a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method in the serum of 18 patients with pemphigus vulgaris (PV) at the baseline and 6 months (n = 10) after immunosuppressive treatments, and 18 healthy controls (HC). Circulating FFA were correlated with the Pemphigus Disease Area Index (PDAI) and serum concentrations of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), Interleukin (IL)-17A, IL-5, IL-10 and IL-21. Principal Component analysis computed on FFA abundances revealed significant differences in the profile of SCFA (p = 0,012), MCFA (p = 0.00015) and LCFA (p = 0,035) between PV patients and HC, which were not significantly changed by immunosuppressive treatments. PV patients showed a significantly lower serum concentration of propionic (p < 0.0005) and butyric (p < 0.0005) acids, SCFA with anti-inflammatory functions, while hexanoic (p < 0.0005) and hexadecanoic (p = 0.0006) acids, pro-inflammatory MCFA and LCFA respectively, were over-represented. Treatments induced a significant decrease of hexanoic (p = 0.035) and a further increase of hexadecanoic (p = 0.046) acids. Positive correlations emerged between IFN-γ and acetic acid (Rho = 0.60), IFN-γ and hexanoic acid (Rho = 0.46), IL-5 and both hexadecanoic acid (Rho = 0.50) and octadecanoic acid (Rho = 0.53), butyric acid and PDAI (Rho = 0.53). PV was associated with a remarked imbalance of circulating FFA compared to HC. The serum alterations of SCFA, MCFA, and LCFA may contribute to promoting inflammation in PV. Deeper insights into the immunomodulatory functions of these molecules may pave the way for personalized dietary interventions in PV patients.

PURPOSE: Cough represents a natural mechanism that plays an important defensive role in the respiratory tract, but in some conditions, it may become persistent, nonproductive, and harmful. In general, refractory chronic cough (RCC) occurs in about 20% of individuals; hence, we aimed to assess the presence of altered gut-lung communication in RCC patients through a compositional and functional characterization of both gut (GM) and oral microbiota (OM). METHODS: 16S rRNA sequencing was used to characterize both GM and OM composition of RCC patients and healthy controls (HC). PICRUST2 assessed functional changes in microbial communities while gas chromatography was used to evaluate fecal short-chain fatty acid levels and serum-free fatty acid (FFA) abundances. RESULTS: In comparison with HC, RCC patients reported increased saliva alpha-diversity and statistically significant beta-diversity in both GM and OM. Also, a, respectively, significant increased or reduced Firmicutes/Bacteroidota ratio in stool and saliva samples of RCC patients has been shown, in addition to a modification of the abundances of several taxa in both GM and OM. Moreover, a potential fecal over-expression of lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis and lipoic acid metabolism pathways and several differences in serum FFA levels have been reported in RCC patients than in HC. CONCLUSION: Since differences in both GM and OM of RCC patients have been documented, these findings could provide new information about RCC pathogenesis and also pave the way for the development of novel nutritional or pharmacological interventions for the management of RCC through the restoration of eubiotic gut-lung communication.

Many attempts have been proposed to evaluate the linkage between the oral-gut-liver axis and the mechanisms related to the diseases' establishment. One of them is the oral microbiota translocation into the bloodstream, liver, and gut, promoting a host dysbiosis and triggering the presence of some metabolites such as trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), known as a risk marker for cardiovascular disease, and especially the myocardial infarction (MI). In the present pilot study, the involvement of oral dysbiosis related to the presence of TMAO has been considered an independent component of the standard risk factors (SRs) in the development of MI, which has not been previously described in human cohorts. A positive and significant correlation of TMAO levels with Porphyromonas was identified; likewise, the increase of the genus Peptidiphaga in patients without SRs was observed. We determined that the presence of SRs does not influence the TMAO concentration in these patients. This report is the first study where the relationship between oral dysbiosis and TMAO is specified in the Mexican population. Our findings provide information on the possible contribution of the oral pathogens associated with gut dysbiosis in the development of MI, although further analysis should be performed.

Endometriosis (EM), a chronic condition in endometrial tissue outside the uterus, affects around 10% of reproductive-age women, significantly affecting fertility. Its prevalence remains elusive due to the surgical confirmation needed for diagnosis. Manifesting with a range of symptoms, including dysmenorrhea, dyschezia, dysuria, dyspareunia, fatigue, and gastrointestinal discomfort, EM significantly impairs quality of life due to severe chronic pelvic pain (CPP). Psychological manifestations, notably depression and anxiety, frequently accompany the physical symptoms, with CPP serving as a key mediator. Pain stems from endometrial lesions, involving oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, angiogenesis, and sensitization processes. Microbial dysbiosis appears to be crucial in the inflammatory mechanisms underlying EM and associated CPP, as well as psychological symptoms. In this scenario, dietary interventions and nutritional supplements could help manage EM symptoms by targeting inflammation, oxidative stress, and the microbiome. Our manuscript starts by delving into the complex relationship between EM pain and psychological comorbidities. It subsequently addresses the emerging roles of the microbiome, inflammation, and oxidative stress as common links among these abovementioned conditions. Furthermore, the review explores how dietary and nutritional interventions may influence the composition and function of the microbiome, reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, alleviate pain, and potentially affect EM-associated psychological disorders.

AIMS: Over the past years, interest in chrono-nutrition has grown enormously as the fundamental role of circadian rhythms in regulating most physiological and metabolic processes has become clearer. Recently, the influence of circadian rhythms on the gut microbiota (GM) composition has also emerged, as more than half of the total microbial composition fluctuates rhythmically throughout the day. At the same time, other studies have observed that the GM itself synchronises the host's circadian biological clock through signals of a different nature. Therefore, it has been hypothesised that there is a two-way communication between the circadian rhythms of the host and the GM, but researchers have only just begun to identify some of its action mechanisms. The manuscript aim is, therefore, to gather and combine the latest evidence in the field of chrono-nutrition with the more recent research on the GM, in order to investigate their relationship and their potential impact on human health. DATA SYNTHESIS: Considering current evidence, a desynchronization of circadian rhythms is closely associated with an alteration in the abundance and functionality of the gut microbiota with consequent deleterious effects on health, such as increased risk of numerous pathologies, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, irritable bowel disease, and depression. A key role in maintaining the balance between circadian rhythms and GM seems to be attributed to meal-timing and diet quality, as well as to certain microbial metabolites, in particular short-chain fatty acids. CONCLUSIONS: Future studies are needed to decipher the link between the circadian rhythms and specific microbial patterns in relation to different disease frameworks.

Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, contributing to the global disease burden. From above, it is a priority to investigate models that fully explain its physiopathology to develop new treatments. In the last decade, many studies have shown that gut microbiota (GM) dysbiosis influences brain functions and participate, in association with immunity, in the pathogenesis of depression. Thereby, GM modulation could be a novel therapeutic target for depression. This review aims to evidence how the GM and the immune system influence mental illness, particularly depression. Here, we focus on the communication mechanisms between the intestine and the brain and the impact on the development of neuroinflammation contributing to the development of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). However, most of the current findings are in animal models, suggesting the need for studies in humans. In addition, more analysis of metabolites and cytokines are needed to identify new pathophysiological mechanisms improving anti-depression treatments.

The composition of the gut microbiota (GM) undergoes significant changes during pregnancy, influenced by metabolic status, energy homeostasis, fat storage, and hormonal and immunological modifications. Moreover, dysbiosis during pregnancy has been associated with preterm birth, which is influenced by factors such as cervical shortening, infection, inflammation, and oxidative stress. However, dysbiosis also affects the levels of lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP), short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and free fatty acids (FFA) in other tissues and the bloodstream. In this study, we investigated the plasmatic levels of some pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as matrix metalloproteinases-8 (MMP-8), interleukin-8 (IL-8), heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70), and microbial markers in pregnant women with a short cervix (≤25 mm) compared to those with normal cervical length (>25 mm). We examined the differences in the concentration of these markers between the two groups, also assessing the impact of gestational diabetes mellitus. Understanding the relationship between GM dysbiosis, inflammatory mediators, and cervical changes during pregnancy may contribute to the identification of potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets for the prevention and management of adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preterm birth.

The global rise of single-use throw-away plastic products has elicited a massive increase in the nano/microplastics (N/MPLs) exposure burden in humans. Recently, it has been demonstrated that disposable period products may release N/MPLs with usage, which represents a potential threat to women's health which has not been scientifically addressed yet. By using polyethyl ene (PE) particles (200 nm to 9 µm), we showed that acute exposure to a high concentration of N/MPLs induced cell toxicity in vaginal keratinocytes after effective cellular uptake, as viability and apoptosis data suggest, along with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations. The internalised N/MPLs altered the expression of junctional and adherence proteins and the organisation of the actin cortex, influencing the level of genes involved in oxidative stress signalling pathways and that of miRNAs related to epithelial barrier function. When the exposure to PE N/MPLs was discontinued or became chronic, cells were able to recover from the negative effects on viability and differentiation/proliferation gene expression in a few days. However, in all cases, PE N/MPL exposure prompted a sustained alteration of DNA methyltransferase and DNA demethylase expression, which might impact epigenetic regulation processes, leading to accelerated cell ageing and inflammation, or the occurrence of malignant transformation.

Lignans are non-flavonoid polyphenols present in a wide range of foods frequently consumed in the Western world, such as seeds, vegetables and fruits, and beverages such as coffee, tea and wine. In particular, the human gut microbiota (GM) can convert dietary lignans into biologically active compounds, especially enterolignans (i.e., enterolactone and enterodiol), which play anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant roles, act as estrogen receptor activators and modulate gene expression and/or enzyme activity. Interestingly, recent evidence documenting those dietary interventions involving foods enriched in lignans have shown beneficial and protective effects on various human pathologies, including colorectal and breast cancer and cardiovascular diseases. However, considering that more factors (e.g., diet, food transit time and intestinal redox state) can modulate the lignans bioactivation by GM, there are usually remarkable inter-individual differences in urine, fecal and blood concentrations of enterolignans; hence, precise and validated analytical methods, especially gas/liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, are needed for their accurate quantification. Therefore, this review aims to summarize the beneficial roles of enterolignans, their interaction with GM and the new methodological approaches developed for their evaluation in different biological samples, since they could be considered future promising nutraceuticals for the prevention of human chronic disorders.

BACKGROUND: Calprotectin (S100A8/A9) has been identified as a biomarker that can aid in predicting the severity of disease in COVID-19 patients. This study aims to evaluate the correlation between levels of circulating calprotectin (cCP) and the severity of COVID-19. METHODS: Sera from 245 COVID-19 patients and 110 apparently healthy individuals were tested for calprotectin levels using a chemiluminescent immunoassay (Inova Diagnostics). Intensive care unit (ICU) admission and type of respiratory support administered were used as indicators of disease severity, and their correlation with calprotectin levels was assessed. RESULTS: Samples from patients in the ICU had a median calprotectin concentration of 11.6 µg/ml as compared to 3.5 µg/ml from COVID-19 patients who were not in the ICU. The median calprotectin concentration in a cohort of healthy individuals collected before the COVID-19 pandemic was 3.0 µg/ml (95% CI: 2.820-2.969 µg/ml). Patients requiring a Venturi mask, continuous positive airway pressure, or orotracheal intubation all had significantly higher values of calprotectin than controls, with the increase of cCP levels proportional to the increasing need of respiratory support. CONCLUSION: Calprotectin levels in serum correlate well with disease severity and represent a promising serological biomarker for the risk assessment of COVID-19 patients.

OBJECTIVES: Evaluating anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody levels is a current priority to drive immunization, as well as to predict when a vaccine booster dose may be required and for which priority groups. The aim of our study was to investigate the kinetics of anti-SARS-CoV-2 Spike S1 protein IgG (anti-S1 IgG) antibodies and neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) in an Italian cohort of healthcare workers (HCWs), following the Pfizer/BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine, over a period of up to six months after the second dose. METHODS: We enrolled 57 HCWs, without clinical history of COVID-19 infection. Fluoroenzyme-immunoassay was used for the quantitative anti-S1 IgG antibodies at different time points T1 (one month), T3 (three months) and T6 (six months) following the second vaccine shot. Simultaneously, a commercial surrogate virus neutralization test (sVNT) was used for the determination of NAbs, expressed as inhibition percentage (% IH). RESULTS: Median values of anti-S1 IgG antibodies decreased from T1 (1,452 BAU/mL) to T6 (104 BAU/mL) with a percent variation of 92.8% while the sVNT showed a percent variation of 34.3% for the same time frame. The decline in anti-S1 IgG antibodies from T1 to T6 was not accompanied by a loss of the neutralizing capacity of antibodies. In fact at T6 a neutralization percentage <20% IH was observed only in 3.51% of HCWs. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings reveal that the decrease of anti-S1 IgG levels do not correspond in parallel to a decrease of NAbs over time, which highlights the necessity of using both assays to assess vaccination effectiveness.

AIMS: Probiotic supplementation approach offers the possibility to shape the gut microbiota (GM), enabling the development of innovative formulations able to improve intestinal well-being and consequently the related body weight modulation and energy metabolism. In the present clinical study, a new potential probiotic supplement based on Lactiplantibacillus plantarum IMC 510 was studied for weight management. METHODS AND RESULTS: Quantitative characterization by qPCR of representative bacterial groups of GM was used to determine the microbiota modulation at different supplementation periods. Furthermore, measurement of the endpoints linked to weight control (body mass index, body weight, waist circumference) was assessed. Specific questionnaires to evaluate the impact on psychological and physiological point of view were performed. Results showed that after 90 days, Lact. plantarum IMC 510 supplementation brought an improvement in endpoints linked to weight control and healthy status, although no significant changes in the microbiota composition were reported for analysed bacterial groups, except for Lactobacillus spp. and Bifidobacterium spp. CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that Lact. plantarum IMC 510 supplementation could be an interesting tool for weight management. More studies are needed to understand the impact on GM, for example, evaluating the production of short-chain fatty acids, since their important role in dietary metabolism. Further research is necessary to better elucidate the relationship between GM and overweight and the mechanism of action by which Lact. plantarum IMC 510 modifies body weight. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: However, these promising outcomes represent a clear advantage of probiotic supplementation and identify a new potential probiotic as a novel and safe therapeutic approach in the obesity prevention and management.

AIMS: The aim of this work was to assess the effects of a probiotic diet on well-being of healthy seniors living in boarding and private homes in Marche Region, Italy. In particular, we focused on the modulation of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (HsCRP), intestinal microbiota and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). METHODS AND RESULTS: Ninety-seven healthy seniors took part in a double-blind, placebo-controlled feeding study (59 fed probiotics, 38 fed placebo) for 6 months. Each volunteer ingested daily one food product or a dietary supplement enriched with Synbio® blend (Synbiotec Srl, Camerino, Italy) or the placebo (control group). Blood and faecal samples were collected before and at the end of the intervention period to perform biochemical and microbiological analyses. The serum HsCRP difference value after 6 months of treatment was significantly higher in the probiotic group than placebo (p < 0.05). After the intervention, a significant increase in faecal lactobacilli and a bifidobacteria increase in more participants were observed in the probiotic group. The 16S NGS analysis on the probiotic group showed a decreasing trend of Proteobacteria at the end of the treatment and conversely, an increasing trend of Actinobacteria and Verrucomicrobia phyla, to which the increase of Akkermansiaceae and Bifidobacteriaceae contributes at the family level. Finally, total short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and butyric acid were significantly higher in the probiotic group at the end of the treatment respect to the beginning. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, this study emphasizes the beneficial anti-inflammageing effect of a prolonged diet based on functional foods enriched with Synbio® through the modulation of the intestinal microbiota and the consequent increase in the SCFA production. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Synbio® integration in elderly daily diet may be a preventive strategy to support healthy ageing.

Mutations in Matrin-3 (MATR3) gene have been described in ALS, suggesting a role for this gene in the disease pathogenesis. While most of MATR3 mutations are point mutations, here we report the first case of ALS associated with duplication in exons 15 and 16. The patient presented with limb-onset ALS and a complex past medical history because of Sjögren syndrome, antiphospholipid antibodies positivity, polyallergies, endometriosis, aldosterone-secreting adrenal cortical adenoma, congenital vesicoureteral reflux, and right breast hypoplasia. We discuss MATR3 effect in ALS and the role of this previously undescribed mutation in this peculiar ALS phenotype associated with systemic autoimmunity involvement.

Gut microbiota is a complex ecosystem composed by trillions of microorganisms that are crucial for human health or disease status. Currently, there are two methodological options to explore its complexity: metagenomics and culturomics. Culturomics is an approach that uses multiple culture conditions (days of incubation, enrichment factors and growth temperature) and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry for the identification of bacterial species and sequencing when this method fails. In this paper, we describe how Colturomic's protocol has allowed the first isolation in human sample of Rummeliibacillus suwonensis, a Gram positive, facultative anaerobe bacterium. The bacterium was isolated from feces of a 69 years old male with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) recruited for a clinical trial assessing safety and efficacy of fecal microbiota transplantation in ALS. The first isolation of the microorganism dates back to 2013 from the soil of a South Korean mountain area. In this report, morphological description, biochemical characterization and antibiotic susceptibility tests were performed to outline the bacterial properties.

Several carbonic anhydrase (CA, EC 4.2.1.1) isoforms play an essential role in processes connected to tumorigenesis, as they efficiently accelerate the hydration of carbon dioxide to bicarbonate and proton. In this context, examples are CA IX and CA XII, which were proved to be upregulated in many solid malignancies. On the other hand, cancer and the immune system are inextricably linked, and targeting the immune checkpoints recently was shown to efficiently improve the treatment of malignancies. In this study, we have investigated the expression of CA isoforms in tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) that, according to the immunosurveillance theory, were suggested to have a crucial role in the development of colorectal cancer (CRC). T lymphocytes isolated from healthy surrounding mucosa showed a higher CA activity compared to those present in tumour and peripheral blood in the same patients. CA I and II were confirmed as enzyme isoforms involved in the process, as determined by proteomic analysis of corresponding TIL samples. These preliminary findings suggest a dysregulation of the local immune response in the CRC tissues and a loss of effective anticancer mechanisms mediated by CAs therein.
