This study investigated the impact of adding hydroxyapatite nanoparticles to implant surfaces treated with zirconia blasting and acid etching (ZiHa), focusing on structural changes and bone healing parameters in low-density bone sites. The topographical characterization of titanium discs with a ZiHa surface and a commercially modified zirconia-blasted and acid-etched surface (Zi) was performed using scanning electron microscopy, profilometry, and surface-free energy. For the in vivo assessment, 22 female rats were ovariectomized and kept for 90 days, after which one implant from each group was randomly placed in each tibial metaphysis of the animals. Histological and immunohistochemical analyses were performed at 14 and 28 days postoperatively (decalcified lab processing), reverse torque testing was performed at 28 days, and histometry from calcified lab processing was performed at 60 days The group ZiHa promoted changes in surface morphology, forming evenly distributed pores. For bone healing, ZiHa showed a greater reverse torque, newly formed bone area, and bone/implant contact values compared to group Zi (p < 0.05; t-test). Qualitative histological and immunohistochemical analyses showed higher features of bone maturation for ZiHa on days 14 and 28. This preclinical study demonstrated that adding hydroxyapatite to zirconia-blasted and acid-etched surfaces enhanced peri-implant bone healing in ovariectomized rats. These findings support the potential for improving osseointegration of dental implants, especially in patients with compromised bone metabolism.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the influence of translucent monolithic versus bilayered crowns and whether the use of a CoCr base abutments affects the fatigue and fracture resistance of screwed implant-supported single crowns with external connections under mechanical cycling. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty specimens were divided into groups: (1) metal-ceramic (MC) crown, (2) veneered zirconia crown (Zr), (3) veneered zirconia crown with a CoCr base abutment (ZrB), (4) monolithic translucent zirconia crown (MZr), and (5) monolithic translucent zirconia crown with a CoCr base abutment (MZrB). Specimens underwent mechanical cycling (5 × 106 cycles; 150 N) evaluating fatigue resistance (number of failures) and those that failed were subsequently subjected to fractographic analyses (stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope) to evaluate failure location and area, and maximum fracture load was also measured. RESULTS: The failure-related survival rate (100%) and maximum fracture resistance of the MZrB were significantly higher than those of MC and Zr (50%; p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in the failure rate and fracture resistance when a CoCr base abutment was used or not in the translucent monolithic Zr groups (p > 0.05;MZrB vs. MZr). Failure location, with MC crowns' fractures, noted at the screw area (p = 0.043), while all-ceramic crowns were mostly in the cuspid and to failure area, the Zr group had the largest mean (15.55 ± 9.17 mm2) among the groups, significant difference only when compared with MC (1.62 ± 0.81 mm2) (p = 0.025). CONCLUSIONS: Translucent monolithic zirconia crowns exhibited significantly higher fatigue and fracture resistance compared with conventional MC and bilayered crowns. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The appropriate choice of material and manufacturing technique is crucial for predicting the higher clinical performance of single crowns. Enhanced mechanical resistance in terms of fatigue and fracture resistance can be achieved by replacing MC and bilayered restorations with computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing monolithic zirconia.

OBJECTIVE: Address oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and patient satisfaction rehabilitated by the all-on-four concept as the primary outcome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A search was performed in the PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis criteria (PRISMA). The PICO question was used to address the following specific question: "What is the level of oral health-related quality of life and satisfaction in edentulous patients and with atrophic jaws who received dental implants for full-arch implant-supported restorations following the all-on-four in the mandible or maxilla?" RESULTS: Eleven studies including 693 patients aged 55 to 71 years were selected. The shortest follow-up period was 3 months and the longest, 7 years. Regarding the OHRQoL assessment method and patient satisfaction, the oral health impact profile (OHIP) and the visual analog scale (VAS) were the most used. CONCLUSION: OHRQoL and satisfaction in patients whose rehabilitation was based on the all-on-four concept were high. However, the current evidence is still limited by the quality of the available studies, making long-term randomized studies necessary to establish the real effectiveness of this surgical-prosthetic approach. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Carefully analyze the aspects related to satisfaction and oral health-related quality of life of rehabilitated patients with implant-supported total prostheses made according to the all-on-four concept, aiming to achieve success through procedures with greater predictability and less complexity, as these are directly associated with recovery oral health of edentulous individuals with less morbidity and minimized costs.

The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the literature available for materials exhibiting the best efficacy in preventing biofilm formation in the interior of implants. We searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Cochrane databases. This review is registered with the PROSPERO database and followed the suitability of the PRISMA protocol. The initial search resulted in 326 articles from the databases. After they were read, 8 articles remained, and the inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. Six of these 8 articles were classified as in vitro and 2 were classified as in situ. The regions of the implants evaluated ranged from the interface of the pieces to the occlusal upper access of the abutment. The implant connections evaluated the Morse taper, external connection, and internal connection. Meta-analysis of the quantitative data was performed at a significance level of .05. Cotton exhibited poor control of infiltration, even in combination with other materials. Isolated gutta-percha (GP) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tape with composite resin (CR) or GP performed better as physical barriers. The best results for chemical barriers were observed by the application of 1% chlorhexidine gluconate (CG) gel, thymol varnish, and the deposition of Ag films onto the surface. The applied meta-analysis did not show a significant difference in comparison between the different types of implant connections (P > .05). The application of CG and thymol varnish antimicrobials was effective in preventing biofilm formation and easy clinical execution; these could be used in combination with CR, GP, and PTFE.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of conversion of resin cements polymerized under different ceramic systems. Forty specimens of RelyX ARC (3M ESPE) and Maxcem Elite (Kerr) resin cements were polymerized under 5 types of dental ceramics: feldspathic, aluminum oxide-reinforced, aluminum oxide-based strengthened with zirconium oxide, leucite-reinforced, and lithium disilicate-reinforced. Measurements of the degree of conversion of the resin cements were performed 10 minutes, 1 hour, and 24 hours after curing using a Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer. The values were subjected to a 3-way repeated-measures analysis of variance, and the means were compared with the Fisher protected least significant difference test (α = 0.05). The study findings showed that RelyX ARC resin cement displayed a higher degree of conversion than Maxcem Elite (P < 0.05). The degree of conversion was significantly lower for RelyX ARC polymerized under aluminum oxide ceramic and aluminum oxide ceramic strengthened with zirconium oxide (P < 0.05). For Maxcem Elite, there was no significant difference in the degree of conversion attained under the various ceramics (P > 0.05). For both cements, the degree of conversion increased gradually up to 24 hours after curing (P < 0.05). The ceramic system used directly influenced the degree of conversion of RelyX ARC. Both resin cements displayed an increase in the degree of conversion over time.

This study evaluated the Martens hardness (HM) and elastic modulus (EIT) of resin cement and dentin underlying the bonding interface of customized glass fiber posts luted to intraradicular dentin and subjected to mechanical cycling. Two null hypotheses were tested: (1) no differences in the mechanical properties (HM and EIT) of the resin cement and underlying dentin would be found between customized and noncustomized glass fiber post groups, with or without mechanical cycling; and (2) no differences in the mechanical properties of the resin cement or underlying dentin would be found between the cervical, middle, and apical thirds of the intraradicular dentin. Forty single-rooted premolars were divided into 4 groups: customized or noncustomized glass fiber post, with or without mechanical cycling. The noncustomized posts were cemented in their original state to prepared canals, while the customized posts were modified with composite resin according to the geometry of the root canal. The specimens in the mechanical cycling groups were positioned at a 45-degree angle in an electromechanical fatigue testing machine and subjected to loading with a steel tip with a 4-mm diameter for 1,200,000 cycles at 50 N. After the specimens were prepared according to the appropriate group protocol, they were sectioned into thirds, and HM and EIT values of the resin cement and dentin underlying the bonding interface were determined using an ultramicrohardness tester under a load of 5 mN. A 2-way repeated-measures analysis of variance with post hoc Tukey test was performed. For resin cement in the cervical region, the highest HM and EIT values were observed in the noncustomized group after mechanical cycling. Similarly, in the underlying dentin, specimens in the noncustomized group after mechanical cycling had the highest HM values in the cervical region. Therefore, customization of glass fiber posts with composite resin is not essential for bonding to intraradicular dentin.

This case report aimed to describe the clinical considerations in oral rehabilitation with prostheses on implants in the anterior region, using emergence profile customization technique during implant transfer. A patient presented with a missing left upper central incisor and with not satisfactory esthetic in the other upper incisors. After diagnosis, a treatment plan was elaborated: implant placement in this region; ceramic laminates for teeth 11 and 22, and full crown for tooth 12. During the impression procedure, the implant transfer was customized by copying the gingival profile. The prostheses were made using IPS e.max ceramic system and luted with resin cement. The patient was submitted to annual follow-up examinations that did not show any irregularity or deficiency in the prostheses. The technique performed is a viable alternative that can be used in oral rehabilitation with implants involving anterior teeth because it allows a predictable level of adaptation.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The color stability and staining of acrylic resin denture teeth remains an esthetic problem for complete denture wearers. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term clinical color stability and stainability of acrylic resin denture teeth in complete denture wearers over a period of 5 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty participants rehabilitated with complete dentures from February 2008 to December 2013 were selected. The demographic data and the clinical characteristics of participants were recorded. Color change (ΔE) in 3 regions of the denture teeth (incisal, middle, and cervical) was evaluated by spectrophotometry in the CIE L*a*b* system. Participants were asked whether they had noticed any changes in the coloring of the teeth in their dentures. Hierarchical clustering analysis was used to identify groups formed from variables related to demographic questions and color analysis. Two-way ANOVA among the color cluster groups was performed and the Tukey-Kramer test was used as a post hoc test (α=.05). A chi-square test and Fisher exact test were used to identify the association between the study variables and color changes in the participants' responses (α=.05). RESULTS: Four cluster groups from 50 participants were identified in the clustering analysis. The ΔE was statistically significant for the interaction between the dental third and cluster groups (P<.001). Cluster groups 1 and 4 exhibited statistically higher ΔE values than cluster groups 2 and 3 (P<.05). Greater chromatic alterations were noted in the incisal third of the teeth than in the cervical and medium thirds in the cluster groups 1 (ΔE=11.03 ±1.22) and 3 (ΔE=4.14 ±1.14) (P<.05). No relationship was found with the participants' personal opinions about color change (P>.05). CONCLUSION: Although the acrylic resin denture teeth exhibited color instability and staining in vivo, the participants were unable to identify the color change. The cluster groups with higher color change values consumed more staining solutions.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of cleft type and supernumerary tooth eruption on the treatment of palatal clefts with alveolar bone grafts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this article, medical records of 40 patients with palatal clefts and associated supernumerary teeth who were treated with alveolar bone grafting in the Hospital for Craniofacial Anomalies Rehabilitation were assessed. The patients were studied to assess the influence of supernumerary teeth and the cleft severity on the prognosis of the alveolar bone graft. RESULTS: Forty medical records were included in the assessment. When the teeth in the cleft had an anatomic shape close to canine, we called them precanine. When they were very small or malformed, we called them anomalous lateral incisors. The teeth studied showed good prognoses and were more expressive in the preforaminal clefts (87.5%) than in the transforaminal ones (62.5%). Moreover, the transforaminal clefts presented a higher percentage in satisfactory and poor prognoses (37.5%). The authors found that supernumerary teeth influenced the maintenance of alveolar bone graft height and that transforaminal clefts presented a worse prognosis than preforaminal clefts.

PURPOSE: The effect of veneering materials on screw joint stability remains inconclusive. Thus, this study evaluated the preload maintenance of abutment screws of single crowns fabricated with different abutments and veneering materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty crowns were divided into five groups (n = 12): UCLA abutment in gold alloy with ceramic (group GC) and resin (group GR) veneering, UCLA abutment in titanium with ceramic (group TiC) and resin (group TiR) veneering, and zirconia abutment with ceramic veneering (group ZiC). Abutment screws made of gold were used with a 35 Ncm insertion torque. Detorque measurements were obtained initially and after mechanical cycling. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Fisher's exact test at a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: For the initial detorque means (in Ncm), group TiC (21.4 ± 1.78) exhibited statistically lower torque maintenance than groups GC (23.9 ± 0.91), GR (24.1 ± 1.34), and TiR (23.2 ± 1.33) (p < 0.05, Fisher's exact test). Group ZiC (21.9 ± 2.68) exhibited significantly lower torque maintenance than groups GC, GR, and TiR (p < 0.05, Fisher's exact test). After mechanical cycling, there was a statistically significant difference between groups TiC (22.1 ± 1.86) and GR (23.8 ± 1.56); between groups ZiC (21.7 ± 2.02) and GR; and also between groups ZiC and TiR (23.6 ± 1.30) (p < 0.05, Fisher's exact test). CONCLUSIONS: Detorque reduction occurred regardless of abutment type and veneering material. More irregular surfaces in the hexagon area of the castable abutments were observed. The superiority of any veneering material concerning preload maintenance was not established.

Sleep-disordered breathing promotes not only unfavorable craniofacial changes in untreated pediatric patients but also neurocognitive, metabolic, cardiovascular, and even long-term social alterations. This systematic review evaluated whether children diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) have different intestinal microbiota constitutions from healthy children and was based on the PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO: CRD42022360074). A total of 1562 clinical studies published between 2019 and 2023 were selected from the PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases, of which five were included in the qualitative analysis, three being randomized and two prospective. The methodological quality was assessed (RoB 2.0 and ROBINS-I) and all studies showed a negative effect of intervention. Sleep deprivation and intermittent hypoxia in children with OSAS seem to trigger a cascade of inflammatory pathways that exacerbate the tissue response to the release of reactive oxygen species and the generation of oxidative stress, leading to a reduction in oxygen supply to the intestinal mucosa and the integral destruction of the intestinal barrier. More evidence-based investigations are needed to optimize the identification of possible alterations in the gut microbiota of pediatric patients, given that its composition may be influenced by the patient's sleep quality and, consequently, by OSAS, showing quantitative and qualitative alterations compared to that found in healthy individuals.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Titanium is subject to corrosion in the oral cavity, which could contribute to periimplantitis. However, the effect of corrosion on the lipopolysaccharide affinity for titanium remains unknown. PURPOSE: This study evaluated the role of corrosion (in artificial saliva at pHs 3, 6.5, and 9) on the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) affinity for commercially pure titanium (cp-Ti) and Ti-6Al-4V alloy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-two titanium disks were anodically polarized in a controlled environment (n=9). Control specimens were not corroded. Deionized water with different concentrations of LPS (1.5, 15, and 150 µg/mL) were used to treat the disks for 24 hours to investigate LPS adherence (n=3). Then specimens were immersed in LPS-free water to evaluate LPS elution at 24, 48, and 72 hours. Data were analyzed by the 2-way, 3-way, and 3-way repeated measures ANOVA, t tests, and the Tukey honestly significant difference (HSD) tests (α=.05). RESULTS: A greater corrosion rate of cp-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy and a higher LPS adherence to titanium surfaces (P<.05) were noted at acidic pH. The LPS affinity was higher for the Ti-6Al-4V alloy than for cp-Ti (P<.05). More LPS was eluted from titanium surfaces after a 24-hour interval. CONCLUSION: Lipopolysaccharide affinity for cp-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy is influenced by the corrosion process.

Titanium is a metallic element known by several attractive characteristics, such as biocompatibility, excellent corrosion resistance and high mechanical resistance. It is widely used in Dentistry, with high success rates, providing a favorable biological response when in contact with live tissues. Therefore, the objective of this study was to describe the different uses of titanium in Dentistry, reviewing its historical development and discoursing about its state of art and future perspective of its utilization. A search in the MEDLINE/PubMed database was performed using the terms 'titanium', 'dentistry' and 'implants'. The title and abstract of articles were read, and after this first screening 20 articles were selected and their full-texts were downloaded. Additional text books and manual search of reference lists within selected articles were included. Correlated literature showed that titanium is the most used metal in Implantology for manufacturing osseointegrated implants and their systems, with a totally consolidated utilization. Moreover, titanium can be also employed in prosthodontics to obtain frameworks. However, problems related to its machining, casting, welding and ceramic application for dental prosthesis are still limiting its use. In Endodontics, titanium has been used in association to nickel for manufacturing rotatory instruments, providing a higher resistance to deformation. However, although the different possibilities of using titanium in modern Dentistry, its use for prostheses frameworks still needs technological improvements in order to surpass its limitations.

E. faecalis has been associated with bacteremia, sepsis, and bacterial endocarditis and peri-implantitis. This microorganism can remain in the alveolus even after extraction of the root remnant. This study aimed to evaluate the corrosion on different surfaces of commercially pure titanium (Ti) grade 4 (Ticp-G4) as a function of the bacterial biofilm effect of Enterococcus faecalis. A total of 57 discs were randomly divided according to their surface finish (n = 19). For microbiological analysis (n = 9), the discs were placed in 12-well plates containing E. faecalis culture and incubated at 37 °C for 7 days. The results show that for the intergroup analysis, considering the "electrolyte" factor, there was a difference between the groups. There was greater biofilm formation for the D.A.Zir group, with greater electrochemical exchange for Biofilm, and the presence of biofilm favored greater electrochemical exchange with the medium.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the role of different levels of pH of artificial saliva under simulated oral environment on the corrosion behavior of commercially pure titanium (cp-Ti) and Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Special attention is given to understand the changes in corrosion kinetics and surface characterization of Ti by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-four Ti disks (15-mm diameter, 2-mm thickness) were divided into six groups (n = 9) as a function of saliva pH (3, 6.5, and 9) and Ti type. Samples were mechanically polished using standard metallographic procedures. Standard electrochemical tests, such as open circuit potential, EIS, and potentiodynamic tests were conducted in a controlled environment. Data were evaluated by two-way ANOVA, Tukey multiple comparison test, and independent t-test (α = 0.05). Ti surfaces were examined using white-light-interferometry microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). RESULTS: Saliva pH level significantly affected the corrosion behavior of both Ti types. At low pH, acceleration of ions exchange between Ti and saliva, and reduction of resistance of Ti surface against corrosion were observed (P < 0.05). Corrosion rate was also significantly increased in acidic medium (P < 0.05). Similar corrosion behavior was observed for both Ti types. The white-light-interferometry images of Ti surfaces show higher surface changes at low pH level. SEM images do not show detectable changes. No pitting corrosion was observed for any group. CONCLUSIONS: The pH level of artificial saliva influences the corrosion behavior of cp-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy in that lower pH accelerates the corrosion rate and kinetics. The corrosion products may mitigate the survival rate of dental implants.

The screw loosening of implant-supported prostheses is a common mechanical failure and is related to several factors as insertion torque and preload. The aim of this study was to evaluate the torque maintenance of retention screws of tapered abutments and cylinders of Morse taper implants submitted to retightening and detorque measurements. Two groups were obtained (n = 12): group I-tapered abutment connected to the implant with titanium retention screw and group II-cylinder with metallic base connected to tapered abutment with titanium retention screw. The detorque values were measured by an analogic torque gauge after 3 minutes of torque insertion. The detorque was measured 10 times for each retention screw of groups I and II, totalizing 120 detorque measurements in each group. Data were submitted to ANOVA and Fisher exact test (P < 0.05). Both groups presented reduced detorque value (P < 0.05) in comparison to the insertion torque in all measurement periods. There was a statistically significant difference (P < 0.05) between the detorque values of the first measurement and the other measurement periods for the abutment screw. However, there was no statistically significant difference (P > 0.05) for the detorque values of all measurement periods for the cylinder screw. In conclusion, the abutment and cylinder screws exhibited torque loss after insertion, which indicates the need for retightening during function of the implant-supported prostheses.

PURPOSE: This study compared the maintenance of tightening torque in different retention screw types of implant-supported crowns. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve metallic crowns in UCLA abutments cast with cobalt-chromium alloy were attached to external hexagon osseointegrated implants with different retention screws: group A: titanium alloy retention screw; group B: gold alloy retention screw with gold coating; group C: titanium alloy retention screw with diamond-like carbon film coating; and group D: titanium alloy retention screw with aluminum titanium nitride coating. Three detorque measurements were obtained after torque insertion in each replica. Data were evaluated by analysis of variance (ANOVA), Tukey's test (P < 0.05), and t test (P < 0.05). RESULTS: Detorque value reduced in all groups (P < 0.05). Group A retained the highest percentage of torque in comparison with the other groups (P < 0.05). Groups B and D retained the lowest percentage of torque without statistically significant difference between them (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: All screw types exhibited reduction in the detorque value. The titanium screw maintained the highest percentage of torque whereas the gold-coated screw and the titanium screw with aluminum titanium nitride coating retained the lowest percentage.

OBJECTIVES: This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the effect of different times and concentrations of hydrofluoric acid etching on the surface of indirect restorative materials obtained from blocks used in CAD-CAM technology. METHODS: Specimens (4 mm × 4 mm × 0.8 mm) were obtained for each indirect restorative material: zirconia-reinforced lithium monosilicate ceramic (Celtra Duo), nanoceramic resin (Lava Ultimate), and polymer-infiltrated ceramic network material (Vita Enamic). The materials were submitted to etching with 5% or 10% hydrofluoric acid for 20, 40, 60, or 90 s. A control group for each material was evaluated without any surface treatment, totaling nine experimental groups for each material (n = 10). The specimens were evaluated for surface roughness (Ra and Rz), confocal optical microscopy, the contact angle (θ), surface free energy (γs), total free interaction energy (∆G) using a goniometer, and microshear bond strength to resin cement. Specimen images were obtained using scanning electron microscopy, confocal optical microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Data on the surface roughness, the contact angle, surface free energy, total free interaction energy, and bond strength were subjected to two-way ANOVA and Tukey´s test (α=0.05). RESULTS: In general, Celtra Duo showed better results after etching with 10% hydrofluoric acid for 40 or 60 s. Lava Ultimate showed better performance after etching with 10% hydrofluoric acid for 20 or 40 s, whereas Vita Enamic showed better results after etching with 5% hydrofluoric acid for 90 s. CONCLUSION: Each material showed different characteristics after etching with hydrofluoric acid. Knowledge of the proper protocol for each material is essential to ensure improvements in the adhesion process and durability of indirect restorations. In general, Celtra Duo presented mechanical properties superior to those of Lava Ultimate and Vita Enamic. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Specific etching protocols must be recommended for each indirect material because longer exposure to hydrofluoric acid can jeopardize the surface, thus affecting the mechanical and bond strength properties.

The cementation procedure of metal-free fixed partial dentures exhibits special characteristics about the porcelains and cementation agents, which turns the correct association between these materials necessary. Our purpose in this literature review was to point the main groups of cements associated to metal-free restoration and discuss about the advantages, disadvantages, and recommendations of each one. Our search was confined to the electronic databases PubMed and SciELO and to books about this matter. There are essentially 3 types of hard cement: conventional, resin, or a hybrid of the two. The metal-free restorations can be fixed with conventional or resin cements. The right choice of luting material is of vital importance to the longevity of dental restorative materials. Conventional cements are advantageous when good compressive straight, good film thickness, and water dissolution resistance are necessary. However, they need an ideal preparation, and they are not acid dissolution resistant. Conventional cements are indicated to porcelains that cannot be acid etched. Resin cements represent the choice to metal-free restoration cementation because they present better physical properties and aesthetic than conventional agents.

The use of implant-supported prosthesis to replace missing teeth became a predictable treatment. Although high success rate has been reported, implant treatment is suitable to complications, failures, and limitations such as peri-implant bone loss after implant loading. Stress evaluation on the bone-abutment-implant interface has been carried out to develop new designs of prosthetic platform and to understand the stress distribution in this interface. Several types of prosthetic platforms are available such as external and internal hexagon, Morse cone connection, and the concept of platform switching. Therefore, this study aimed to critically describe the different options of prosthetic platforms in implant dentistry, by discussing their biomechanical concepts, clinical use, and advantages and disadvantages. It was observed that all types of prosthetic platforms provided high success rate of the implant treatment by following a strict criteria of indication and limitation. In conclusion, a reverse planning of implant treatment is strongly indicated to reduce implant overload, and the use of advanced surgical-prosthetic techniques is required to obtain a long-term success of oral rehabilitations.
