RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To report on macular hole repair in macular telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel2). DESIGN: Global, multicenter, retrospective case series. PARTICIPANTS: Patients undergoing surgery for MacTel2-associated full-thickness macular hole (MTMH). METHODS: Standardized data collection sheet distributed to all surgeons. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Anatomic closure and visual outcomes of MTMH. RESULTS: Sixty-three surgeries in 47 patients with MTMH were included from 30 surgeons. Mean age was 68.1 years, with 62% female, 72% White, 21% East or South Asian, 2% African American, and 2% Hispanic or Latino. Procedures included 34 internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling alone, 22 ILM flaps, 5 autologous retinal transplantations (ARTs), 1 retinotomy, and 1 subretinal bleb. For ILM peeling, preoperative visual acuity (VA) was 0.667 ± 0.423 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR). Minimum hole diameter (MHD) was 305.5 ± 159.4 µm (range, 34-573 µm). Sixteen of 34 ILM peels (47%) resulted in MTMH closure. At postoperative month 6, VA was stable at 0.602 ± 0.516 logMAR (P = 0.65). VA improved by at least 2 lines in 43% and at least 4 lines in 24%. For ILM flaps, preoperative VA was 0.878 ± 0.552 logMAR. MHD was 440.8 ± 175.5 µm (range, 97-697 µm), which was significantly larger than for ILM peels (P < 0.01). Twenty of 22 ILM flaps (90%) resulted in MTMH closure, which was significantly higher than for ILM peels (P < 0.01). At postoperative month 6, VA improved to 0.555 ± 0.405 logMAR (P < 0.05). VA improved by at least 2 lines in 56% and at least 4 lines in 28%. For ARTs, preoperative VA was 1.460 ± 0.391 logMAR. MHD was 390.2 ± 203.7 µm (range, 132-687 µm). All 5 ARTs (100%) resulted in MTMH closure. At postoperative month 6, VA was stable at 1.000 ± 0.246 logMAR (P = 0.08). Visual acuity improved at least 2 lines in 25%. CONCLUSIONS: Surgical closure of macular holes improved VA in 57% of MTMHs. Internal limiting membrane flaps achieved better anatomic and functional outcomes than ILM peeling alone. Autologous retinal transplantation may be an option for refractory MTMHs. RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Improving end-of-life (EOL) quality for terminally ill cancer patients is crucial. However, associations between hospice/palliative care and EOL quality, as perceived by patients, are underreported. We aimed to examine the impact of palliative care consultative services on the EOL quality during cancer patients' last six months. METHODS: In this prospective, longitudinal study, 174 cancer patients were divided into a palliative care consultative services group (n = 65) or a non palliative care consultative services group (n = 109). The impact of palliative care consultative services on EOL quality, assessed using the Quality of Dying and Death (QODD) scale at the first and last assessments within the patients' last six months, was analyzed by linear regression with generalized estimating equations, adjusting for covariates. RESULTS: Cancer patients received palliative care consultative services a median of 34.0 days before death. There were significant main effects of groups, indicating that patients receiving palliative care consultative services had better QODD total scores (ß [95% confidence interval] = 2.12 [0.32,3.93], p = .021), death preparation (3.80 [1.71,5.89], p < .001), and treatment preferences than the reference group (3.27 [0.90,5.64], p = .007). No group differences were found in other dimensions, including symptom and personal care, whole person concern, and time with family. CONCLUSION: Palliative care consultative services significantly improved cancer patients' perceptions of death preparation, treatment preferences, and the QODD total score. Therefore, healthcare professionals should offer palliative care consultative services to cancer patients, initiate early referrals for such care, and implement effective and individualized interventions to enhance EOL quality.

RESUMEN

Background: Ocular comorbidities of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) has been widely evaluated; however real-world evidence was scarce. Moreover, risk of glaucoma in HS patients remained unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the 5-year glaucoma risk in HS patients. Methods: This retrospective cohort study used the TriNetX database covering 2005-2017. In total, 53,281 HS patients were propensity score matched 1:1 to controls based on demographics, including comorbidities, medications, healthcare utilization, etc. Patients were followed for 5 years post-index date. Glaucoma risks were calculated based on hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Stratified analyses by sex and age were performed. Results: After matching, baseline characteristics were similar between groups. HS was associated with a 1.25 times higher 5-year glaucoma risk (95% CI, 1.10-1.42). The risk was significant within 1 year (HR=1.37; 95% CI, 1.03-1.82), 3 years (HR=1.31; 95% CI, 1.12-1.54), and 5 years post-index. In subgroup analysis, women had a 1.28 times higher risk (95% CI, 1.10-1.49). Patients aged 18-64 years (HR=1.33; 95% CI, 1.14-1.55) and ≥65 years (HR=1.33; 95% CI, 1.05-1.67) also presented elevated glaucoma risks. Conclusion: This real-world data analysis demonstrated a significantly increased 5-year glaucoma risk in HS patients versus matched controls. Ocular complications should be concerned while managing HS patients.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy of brolucizumab, half-dose PDT, and aflibercept in treating chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). METHODS: A retrospective cohort study with chronic CSC patients who underwent intravitreal injection of one shot of brolucizumab or aflibercept in the first 3 months, followed by pro re nata regimens or a single session of half-dose PDT, was retrospectively reviewed. The primary outcome measure was the proportion of eyes that achieved complete absorption of retinal fluid without requiring any rescue treatment. Secondary outcomes included changes in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central retinal thickness (CRT), and central choroidal thickness (CCT). RESULTS: A total of 54 consecutive patients were included in this study with 18 patients in each group. At months 1 and 2, the brolucizumab group exhibited the highest rate of complete retinal fluid resolution (61% and 77%), followed by the half-dose PDT group (56% and 72%), and lowest in the aflibercept group (28% and 33%), with statistically significant differences noted at month 2 (P = 0.012). The brolucizumab group also demonstrated the most significant reduction in CCT at months 1 and 2 among the three groups (P = 0.007 and 0.001). Recurrence of retinal fluid in the brolucizumab groups was predominantly observed at month 3. Conversely, the half-dose PDT group exhibited the most favorable anatomical results starting from month 3. Notably, mild vitritis was observed in one case from the brolucizumab group. CONCLUSIONS: Single injection of brolucizumab demonstrates trends of faster regression of persistent residual retinal fluid, greater CCT and CRT decline, and matched BCVA compared to half-dose PDT in the short term.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: HALE is now a regular strategic planning indicator for all levels of the Chinese government. However, HALE measurements necessitate comprehensive data collection and intricate technology. Therefore, effectively converting numerous diseases into the years lived with disability (YLD) rate is a significant challenge for HALE measurements. Our study aimed to construct a simple YLD rate measurement model with high applicability based on the current situation of actual data resources within China to address challenges in measuring HALE target values during planning. METHODS: First, based on the Chinese YLD rate in the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019, Pearson correlation analysis, the global optimum method, etc., was utilized to screen the best predictor variables from the current Chinese data resources. Missing data for predictor variables were filled in via spline interpolation. Then, multiple linear regression models were fitted to construct the YLD rate measurement model. The Sullivan method was used to measure HALE. The Monte Carlo method was employed to generate 95% uncertainty intervals. Finally, model performances were assessed using the mean absolute error (MAE) and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE). RESULTS: A three-input-parameter model was constructed to measure the age-specific YLD rates by sex in China, directly using the incidence of infectious diseases, the incidence of chronic diseases among persons aged 15 and older, and the addition of an under-five mortality rate covariate. The total MAE and MAPE for the combined YLD rate were 0.0007 and 0.5949%, respectively. The MAE and MAPE of the combined HALE in the 0-year-old group were 0.0341 and 0.0526%, respectively. There were slightly fewer males (0.0197, 0.0311%) than females (0.0501, 0.0755%). CONCLUSION: We constructed a high-accuracy model to measure the YLD rate in China by using three monitoring indicators from the Chinese national routine as predictor variables. The model provides a realistic and feasible solution for measuring HALE at the national and especially regional levels, considering limited data.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Compare the anatomical and functional outcomes, operation duration, and complication rates between standard scleral buckling (SSB) and chandelier-assisted scleral buckling (CSB) for phakic eyes with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched from inception to June 2024. The primary endpoint will be set as a final success. The secondary endpoint will be primary success, operation time, and final BCVA. RESULTS: Our meta-analysis showed that there is no statistical difference between CSB and SSB for the final success rate (RR = 1.00, 95% CI = 0.97-1.03). For the primary success rate, there is no statistical difference between CSB and SSB (RR = 1.00, 95% CI = 0.94-1.06). For operation time, our meta-analysis showed that the CSB group is less than the SSB group (pooled MD = -15.8, 95% CI = -22.60 to -9.00). For postoperative complications, our study shows that the CSB group presented with lower pooled risk than the SSB group (RR = 0.59, 95% CI = 0.41-0.89). There is a trend that the ERM formation risk is higher in the CSB group if there is no routine suture for the sclerotomy (p = 0.08). CONCLUSION: CSB showcases a significantly reduced operation duration and less postoperative complication in contrast to the SSB group, maintaining comparable primary and ultimate anatomical success rates as well as final BCVA.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Human polyomavirus BK (BKPyV) causes associated nephropathy and contributes to urinary tract cancer development in renal transplant recipients. Large tumor antigen (LT) is an early protein essential in the polyomavirus life cycle. Protein acetylation plays a critical role in regulating protein stability, so this study investigated the acetylation of the BKPyV LT protein. METHODS: The BKPyV LT nucleotide was synthesized, and the protein was expressed by transfection into permissive cells. The BKPyV LT protein was immunoprecipitated and subjected to LC-MS/MS analysis to determine the acetylation residues. The relative lysine was then mutated to arginine in the LT nucleotide and BKPyV genome to analyze the role of LT lysine acetylation in the BKPyV life cycle. RESULTS: BKPyV LT acetylation sites were identified at Lys3 and Lys230 by mass spectrometry. HDAC3 and HDAC8 and their deacetylation activity are required for BKPyV LT expression. In addition, mutations of Lys3 and Lys230 to arginine increased LT expression, and the interaction of HDAC3 and LT was confirmed by coimmunoprecipitation. CONCLUSIONS: HDAC3 is a newly identified protein that interacts with BKPyV LT, and LT acetylation plays a vital role in the BKPyV life cycle.

RESUMEN

Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) is the main treatment modality for patients with severe diabetic retinopathy. With the development of systems for microincision, wide-angle viewing, digitally assisted visualization, and intraoperative optical coherence tomography, contemporary PPV for diabetic retinopathy has been performed on a wider range of indications than previously considered. In this article, we reviewed, in conjunction with our collective experiences with Asian patients, the applications of new technologies for PPV in eyes with diabetic retinopathy and highlighted several important procedures and entities not generally reiterated in the literature, in order for vitreoretinal surgeons to optimize their approaches when facing the challenges imposed by the complications in diabetic eyes.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Poly-D, L-lactic acid is (PDLLA) a new cosmetic filler. We reported the first case of PDLLA-related devastating complication of multiple branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO). CASE PRESENTATION: A 23-year-old female had sudden blindness after injection of PDLLA at the glabella. After emergency intraocular pressure-lowering medicine, ocular massage, steroid pulse therapy, heparin and alprostadil infusion, and subsequent treatments including acupuncture and 40 sessions of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, her best-corrected visual acuity improved from hand motion at 30 cm to 0.3 within 2 months. CONCLUSION: Although safety of PDLLA was evaluated in animal studies and in 16,000 human cases, it could still cause rare but devastating retinal artery occlusion as in the present case. Proper and immediate therapies could still improve patient's vision and scotoma. Surgeons should keep in mind the possibility of iatrogenic filler-related retinal artery occlusion.

RESUMEN

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) uveitis, a type of herpetic uveitis, is a major cause of infectious uveitis. Anterior and posterior CMV uveitis have diverse clinical presentations and treatment modalities. Based on expert consensus in Taiwan, this article provides suggestions regarding clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment strategies for CMV uveitis based on clinical practice experience in Taiwan. CMV uveitis may have a distinct clinical presentation. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is an essential diagnostic tool to confirm a diagnosis. Antiviral therapy is the mainstay of treatment. Different agents, routes, and other supplemental treatments have been summarized and discussed in this article. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of CMV uveitis are crucial to avoid irreversible complications and vision loss. This consensus provides practical guidelines for ophthalmologists in Taiwan.

RESUMEN

Forest carbon stocks and sinks (CSSs) have been widely estimated using climate classification tables and linear regression (LR) models with common independent variables (IVs) such as the average diameter at breast height (DBH) of stems and root shoot ratio. However, this approach is relatively ineffective when the explanatory power of IVs is lower than that of unobservable variables. Various environmental and anthropogenic factors affect target variables that cause the correlation between them to be chaotic. Here, we designed a knife set (KS) approach combining LR models and the wandering through random forests (WTF) algorithm and applied it in a specific case of Phyllostachys edulis (Carrière) J. Houz. (P. edulis) forests, which have an irregular relationship between their belowground carbon (BGC) stocks and average DBH. We then validated the KS approach performed by cluster computing to estimate the aboveground carbon (AGC) and BGC stocks and the total net primary production (TNPP). The estimated CSSs were compared to the benchmark of the methodology that applied Tier 1 in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories via 10-fold cross validation, and the KS approach significantly increased precision and accuracy of estimations. Our approach provides general insights to accurately estimate forest CSSs relying on evidence-based field data, even if some target variables are divergent in specific forest types. We also pointed out the reason why current fancy models containing machine learning (ML) or deep learning algorithms are not effective in predicting the target variables of certain chaotic systems is perhaps that the total explanatory power of observable variables is less than that of the total unobservable variables. Quantifying unobservable variables into observable variables is a linchpin of future works related to chaotic system estimation.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury, which mainly involves inflammatory responses and apoptosis, is a common cause of organ dysfunction in liver transplantation (LT). As a critical mediator of inflammation and apoptosis in various cell types, the role of tripartite motif-containing (TRIM) 27 in hepatic I/R injury remains worthy of study. APPROACH AND RESULTS: This study systemically evaluated the putative role of TRIM27/transforming growth factor ß-activated kinase 1 (TAK1)/JNK (c-Jun N-terminal kinase)/p38 signaling in hepatic I/R injury. TRIM27 expression was significantly down-regulated in liver tissue from LT patients, mice subjected to hepatic I/R surgery, and hepatocytes challenged by hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) treatment. Subsequently, using global Trim27 knockout mice (Trim27-KO mice) and hepatocyte-specific Trim27 transgenic mice (Trim27-HTG mice), TRIM27 functions to ameliorate liver damage, reduce the inflammatory response, and prevent cell apoptosis. In parallel in vitro studies, activating TRIM27 also prevented H/R-induced hepatocyte inflammation and apoptosis. Mechanistically, TRIM27 constitutively interacted with the critical components, TAK1 and TAK1 binding protein 2/3 (TAB2/3), and promoted the degradation of TAB2/3, leading to inactivation of TAK1 and the subsequent suppression of downstream JNK/p38 signaling. CONCLUSIONS: TRIM27 is a key regulator of hepatic I/R injury by mediating the degradation of TAB2/3 and suppression of downstream TAK1-JNK/p38 signaling. TRIM27 may be a promising approach to protect the liver against I/R-mediated hepatocellular damage in transplant recipients.

RESUMEN

Lenvatinib, a multi-tyrosine kinase inhibitor that inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor and fibroblast growth factor receptors pathway, activated the immune response in tumor microenvironment. However, the combination of lenvatinib and anti-PD-1 has been reported in early phase studies. Hence, this study aims to explore the efficacy and toxicity of lenvatinib combined with nivolumab in the real-world setting. Advanced HCC patients who underwent lenvatinib combined with nivolumab (L + N group) treatment at Taipei Veterans General Hospital (Taipei, Taiwan) were reviewed between January 2016 and December 2020. Treatment response and outcomes were collected and analyzed. A control group with lenvatinib (L group) was also included for comparison. Forty patients were included in L + N group and 47 in L group. The L + N group demonstrated a higher objective response rate than L group (45.0% vs. 23.4%, p = 0.03). The L + N group also achieved longer PFS (7.5 vs. 4.8 months, p = 0.05) and OS (22.9 vs. 10.3 months, p = 0.01) than L group. Patients with HBV infection and REFLECT criteria fit demonstrated a trend of better prognosis. The PFS for those with PR, SD and PD groups were 11.2, 6.4, and 2.2 months and OS were non-reached, 14.6 and 4.7 months, respectively. Portal vein thrombosis (HR 4.3, 95% C.I. 1.5-12.8) and AFP > 400 ng/mL (HR 3.3, 95% C.I. 1.1-9.3) were poor prognostic factors and nivolumab used remained a protective factor (HR 0.2, 95% C.I. 0.1-0.7). Dermatitis (35.0%), pruritis (27.5%), and hypothyroidism (27.5%) were the common toxicities. Few patients developed grade 3/4 toxicities, including dermatitis (15%), gastrointestinal bleeding (7.5%), hypertension (5.0%), pneumonitis (2.5%) and stomatitis (2.5%). This is the first real-world data reporting the promising efficacy and tolerable toxicities of lenvatinib combined with nivolumab in advanced HCC. Further randomized trials are prompted.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays a role in the tumor microenvironment. Sorafenib, which inhibits the VEGF pathway, has an immune-modulation function but lacks substantial clinical data. This study aims to explore the efficacy of anti-PD-1 combined sorafenib in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: HCC patients who underwent anti-PD-1 treatment at Taipei Veterans General Hospital (Taipei, Taiwan) between January 2016 and February 2019 were reviewed. The efficacy was compared between groups after propensity-score matching. RESULTS: There were 173 HCC patients receiving anti-PD-1. After excluding unsuitable cases, 140 patients were analyzed, of which 58 received combination therapy and 82 received anti-PD-1 alone. The combination therapy had a trend of higher CR rate (8.6% vs. 4.9%, ns.), ORR (22.4% vs. 19.5%, ns.) and significantly higher DCR (69.0% vs. 37.8%, p < 0.05) comparing to anti-PD-1 alone. After matching, combination group achieved longer progression-free survival (3.87 vs. 2.43 months, p < 0.05) and overall survival (not reached vs. 7.17 months, p < 0.05) than anti-PD-1 alone, without higher grade 3/4 AE (10.3% vs. 7.1%, p = 0.73). The tumor response varied among different metastatic sites, with high responses in adrenal glands, peritoneum and lungs. The more AFP declined (> 10, > 50 and > 66%), the higher the ORR (70, 80 and 92%) and CR rates (30, 35 and 58%) were achieved at day 28. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to demonstrate the combination of anti-PD-1 and sorafenib had better efficacy and survival benefit. A prospective randomized study is needed to confirm this finding.

A nitrogen-fixing, endospore-forming, motile, rod-shaped, facultative aerobic bacterium, designated 81-11T, was isolated from rhizosphere soil of a peach tree collected from Handan, Hebei, PR China. From the comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequence, the strain is most closely related to Paenibacillus phoenicis DSM 27463T (96.9 %) and Paenibacillus faecis DSM 23593T (96.7 %). The genome size of strain 81-11T was 4.4 Mb, comprising 4879 predicted genes with a DNA G+C content of 50.0 mol%. The average nucleotide identity values of genome sequences between the novel isolate and the type strains of related species P. phoenicis DSM 27463T and P. faecis DSM 23593T were 71.8 and 72.1 %, respectively. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0(47.8 %), iso-C16 : 0 (15.5 %) and iso-C15 : 0 (13.0 %). Menaquinone-7 was the major respiratory quinone. The polar lipids contained phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, aminophospholipid, aminoglycopid, unknown polar lipids and unidentified aminophosphoglycolipid. Based on phylogenetic, genomic and phenotypic characteristics, strain 81-11T was classified as a novel species within the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus caui sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Paenibacillus caui is 81-11T (=JCM 34618T=CGMCC 1.18907T).

RESUMEN

The management of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) has taken a major stride forward with the advent of anti-VEGF agents. The treat-and-extend (T&E) approach is a refined management strategy, tailoring to the individual patient's disease course and treatment outcome. To provide guidance to implementing anti-VEGF T&E regimens for nAMD in resource-limited health care systems, an advisory board was held to discuss and generate expert consensus, based on local and international guidelines, current evidence, as well as local experience and reimbursement policies. In the experts' opinion, treatment of nAMD should aim to maximize and maintain visual acuity benefits while minimizing treatment burden. Based on current evidence, treatment could be initiated with 3 consecutive monthly injections. After the initial period, treatment interval may be extended by 2 or 4 weeks each time for the qualified patients (i.e. no BCVA loss ≥5 ETDRS letters and dry retina), and a maximum interval of 16 weeks is permitted. For patients meeting the shortening criteria (i.e. any increased fluid with BCVA loss ≥5 ETDRS letters, or presence of new macular hemorrhage or new neovascularization), the treatment interval should be reduced by 2 or 4 weeks each time, with a minimal interval of 4 weeks. Discontinuation of anti-VEGF may be considered for those who have received 2-3 consecutive injections spaced 16 weeks apart and present with stable disease. For these individuals, regular monitoring (e.g. 3-4 months) is recommended and monthly injections should be reinstated upon signs of disease recurrence.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The RENOWNED study investigated the treatment patterns, real-world effectiveness and safety of ranibizumab in Taiwanese patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) treated with ranibizumab 0.5 mg in accordance with the first reimbursement scheme effective from 2012 to 2014. METHODS: This study was a Phase IV, 12-month, open-label, prospective, observational study conducted in Taiwan. Patients with visual impairment due to nAMD initiating treatment with ranibizumab 0.5 mg were included. The primary endpoint was mean change in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) from Baseline at Month 3. RESULTS: Overall, 202 patients with nAMD were included. Mean (standard deviation [SD]) BCVA Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study letters improved from Baseline (49.6 [21.5] letters) at Month 3 (+4.9 [11.8], P < 0.0001), and at Month 12 (+3.5 [14.1], P = 0.0043). The proportion of patients with nAMD who lost ≥5 letters at Months 3 and 12 was 13.6% (n = 27) and 26.6% (n = 37), respectively. Mean (SD) central retinal thickness decreased from Baseline (320.1 [127.2] µm) with a mean reduction of 49.1 (107.3) µm at Month 3 (P < 0.0001), but was not significant at Month 12 with a mean reduction of 11.6 (115.6) µm (P = 0.2861). Mean (SD) number of ranibizumab injections over 12 months was 3.1 (1.0). A mean treatment interval of 109.5 days was observed between the third and fourth injections. After limited reimbursed ranibizumab injections, 43.8% patients received other treatments. The safety findings are consistent with previous studies. CONCLUSION: Ranibizumab 0.5 mg treatment for 12 months under real-world settings improved visual outcomes in Taiwanese patients with nAMD.

RESUMEN

Heterojunction nanostructures usually exhibit enhanced properties in compariosn with their building blocks and are promising catalyst candidates due to their combined surface and unique interface. Here, for the first time we realized the oriented growth of ultrasmall metal nanoparticles (NPs) on metal-organic framework nanosheets (MOF NSs) by precisely regulating the reduction kinetics of metal ions with solvents. In particular, a rapid reduction of metal ions leads to the random distribution of metal NPs on the surface of MOF NSs, while a slow reduction of metal ions results in the oriented growth of NPs on the edge of MOF NSs. Impressively, the strong synergy between Pt NPs and MOF NSs significantly enhances the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance, and the optimal catalyst displays HER activities superior to those of a composite with a random growth of Pt NPs and commercial Pt/C under both acidic and alkaline conditions. Moreover, the versatility of such oriented growth has been extended to other metal NPs, such as Pd, Ag, and Au. We believe this work will promote research interest in material design for many potential applications.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury remains a major challenge affecting the morbidity and mortality of liver transplantation. Effective strategies to improve liver function after hepatic I/R injury are limited. Six-transmembrane epithelial antigen of the prostate 3 (Steap3), a key regulator of iron uptake, was reported to be involved in immunity and apoptotic processes in various cell types. However, the role of Steap3 in hepatic I/R-induced liver damage remains largely unclear. APPROACH AND RESULTS: In the present study, we found that Steap3 expression was significantly up-regulated in liver tissue from mice subjected to hepatic I/R surgery and primary hepatocytes challenged with hypoxia/reoxygenation insult. Subsequently, global Steap3 knockout (Steap3-KO) mice, hepatocyte-specific Steap3 transgenic (Steap3-HTG) mice, and their corresponding controls were subjected to partial hepatic warm I/R injury. Hepatic histology, the inflammatory response, and apoptosis were monitored to assess liver damage. The molecular mechanisms of Steap3 function were explored in vivo and in vitro. The results demonstrated that, compared with control mice, Steap3-KO mice exhibited alleviated liver damage after hepatic I/R injury, as shown by smaller necrotic areas, lower serum transaminase levels, decreased apoptosis rates, and reduced inflammatory cell infiltration, whereas Steap3-HTG mice had the opposite phenotype. Further molecular experiments showed that Steap3 deficiency could inhibit transforming growth factor-ß-activated kinase 1 (TAK1) activation and downstream c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38 signaling during hepatic I/R injury. CONCLUSIONS: Steap3 is a mediator of hepatic I/R injury that functions by regulating inflammatory responses as well as apoptosis through TAK1-dependent activation of the JNK/p38 pathways. Targeting hepatocytes, Steap3 may be a promising approach to protect the liver against I/R injury.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To investigate the foveal movement in eyes with epiretinal membrane after vitrectomy and membrane peeling. METHODS: A retrospective review of 85 eyes with epiretinal membrane treated with vitrectomy, membrane peeling, and internal limiting membrane removal. Using a self-designed computer program to compare the preoperative and postoperative images of optical coherence tomography to measure the amount of foveal movement. Analyze the relationships between foveal displacement, preoperative and postoperative best-corrected visual acuity, central foveal thickness, and the stage of epiretinal membrane. RESULTS: Most of the fovea were nasally shifted. More movement happened in the first month and almost finished in the first year. The greater degree of foveal displacement was correlated with poorer initial visual acuity and thicker central foveal thickness. In considering with the ectopic inner foveal layer staging of epiretinal membrane by structural optical coherence tomography, the foveal realignment is greatest in Stage 4 (394.47 ± 171.44 µm), followed by Stage 1 (251.21 ± 135.40 µm), Stage 2 (235.70 ± 147.51 µm), and Stage 3 (219.86 ± 117.91 µm) at the postoperative 1 month. CONCLUSION: Most eyes of epiretinal membrane had the foveal moved nasally after membrane peeling and internal limiting membrane peeling. The larger amount of foveal movement was correlated with poorer initial best-corrected visual acuity. Dystopia fovea may be another factor affecting visual acuity in addition to other biomarkers in optical coherence tomography.
