RESUMEN

The pursuit of discovering new high-temperature superconductors that diverge from the copper-based model1-3 has profound implications for explaining mechanisms behind superconductivity and may also enable new applications4-8. Here our investigation shows that the application of pressure effectively suppresses the spin-charge order in trilayer nickelate La4Ni3O10-δ single crystals, leading to the emergence of superconductivity with a maximum critical temperature (Tc) of around 30 K at 69.0 GPa. The d.c. susceptibility measurements confirm a substantial diamagnetic response below Tc, indicating the presence of bulk superconductivity with a volume fraction exceeding 80%. In the normal state, we observe a strange metal behaviour, characterized by a linear temperature-dependent resistance extending up to 300 K. Furthermore, the layer-dependent superconductivity observed hints at a unique interlayer coupling mechanism specific to nickelates, setting them apart from cuprates in this regard. Our findings provide crucial insights into the fundamental mechanisms underpinning superconductivity, while also introducing a new material platform to explore the intricate interplay between the spin-charge order, flat band structures, interlayer coupling, strange metal behaviour and high-temperature superconductivity.

High Mountain Asia (HMA) has experienced a spatial imbalance in water resources in recent decades, partly because of a dipolar pattern of precipitation changes known as South Drying-North Wetting1. These changes can be influenced by both human activities and internal climate variability2,3. Although climate projections indicate a future widespread wetting trend over HMA1,4, the timing and mechanism of the transition from a dipolar to a monopolar pattern remain unknown. Here we demonstrate that the observed dipolar precipitation change in HMA during summer is primarily driven by westerly- and monsoon-associated precipitation patterns. The weakening of the Asian westerly jet, caused by the uneven emission of anthropogenic aerosols, favoured a dipolar precipitation trend from 1951 to 2020. Moreover, the phase transition of the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation induces an out-of-phase precipitation change between the core region of the South Asian monsoon and southeastern HMA. Under medium- or high-emission scenarios, corresponding to a global warming of 0.6-1.1 °C compared with the present, the dipolar pattern is projected to shift to a monopolar wetting trend in the 2040s. This shift in precipitation patterns is mainly attributed to the intensified jet stream resulting from reduced emissions of anthropogenic aerosols. These findings underscore the importance of considering the impact of aerosol emission reduction in future social planning by policymakers.

For cells to initiate and sustain a differentiated state, it is necessary that a 'memory' of this state is transmitted through mitosis to the daughter cells1-3. Mammalian switch/sucrose non-fermentable (SWI/SNF) complexes (also known as Brg1/Brg-associated factors, or BAF) control cell identity by modulating chromatin architecture to regulate gene expression4-7, but whether they participate in cell fate memory is unclear. Here we provide evidence that subunits of SWI/SNF act as mitotic bookmarks to safeguard cell identity during cell division. The SWI/SNF core subunits SMARCE1 and SMARCB1 are displaced from enhancers but are bound to promoters during mitosis, and we show that this binding is required for appropriate reactivation of bound genes after mitotic exit. Ablation of SMARCE1 during a single mitosis in mouse embryonic stem cells is sufficient to disrupt gene expression, impair the occupancy of several established bookmarks at a subset of their targets and cause aberrant neural differentiation. Thus, SWI/SNF subunit SMARCE1 has a mitotic bookmarking role and is essential for heritable epigenetic fidelity during transcriptional reprogramming.

Infrared spectrometers with the ability to resolve the spectral intensity and wavelength simultaneously are widely used in industry and the laboratory. However, their huge volume, high price, and cryogenic operating temperature limit their applications in the rapidly developing field of portable devices. Here, we demonstrate a room-temperature self-powered infrared spectrometer based on a single black phosphorus (BP) heterojunction diode. The nonlinearly gate-tunable photocurrent spectrum involving quantum-confined Franz-Keldysh and Burstein-Moss effects in a single BP/MoS2 diode instead of using space-consuming detector arrays provides a new dimension for resolving the intensity and wavelength information of spectra simultaneously. The active area for spectral sensing is only 1500 µm2, and the photodetection range is from 1.7 to 3.6 µm. Room-temperature operation, micrometer-scale size, and silicon-compatible technology make the BP/MoS2 heterojunction a promising configuration for portable spectrometer applications.

The surface of three-dimensional materials provides an ideal and versatile platform to explore quantum-confined physics. Here, we systematically investigate the electronic structure of Na-intercalated CrTe2, a van der Waals antiferromagnet, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. The measured band structure deviates from the calculation of bulk NaCrTe2 but agrees with that of ferromagnetic monolayer CrTe2. Consistently, we observe unexpected exchange splitting of the band dispersions, persisting well above the Néel temperature of bulk NaCrTe2. We argue that NaCrTe2 features a quantum-confined 2D ferromagnetic state in the topmost surface layer due to strong ferromagnetic correlation in the CrTe2 layer. Moreover, the exchange splitting and the critical temperature can be controlled by surface doping of alkali-metal atoms, suggesting the feasibility of tuning the surface ferromagnetism. Our work not only presents a simple platform for exploring tunable 2D ferromagnetism but also provides important insights into the quantum-confined low-dimensional magnetic states.

Dielectrics with high, nonvolatile, and multiple polarizations are required for fabricating memcapacitors that enable high parallelism and low energy consumption in artificial neuromorphic computing systems as artificial synapses. Conventional ferroelectric materials based on displacive and order-disorder types generally have difficulty meeting these requirements due to their low polarization values (∼150 µC/cm2) and persistent electrical hysteresis loops. In this study, we report a novel organic-inorganic hybrid (CETM)2InCl5·H2O (CETM = (CH3)3(CH2CH2Cl)N) exhibiting an intriguing polarization vs electric field (charge vs voltage) "hysteresis loop" and a record-high nonvolatile polarization over 30 000 µC/cm2 at room temperature. The polarization is highly dependent on the period and amplitude of the ac voltage, showing multiple nonvolatile states. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, time-dependent current behavior, disparate resistor response in the dehydrated derivative (CETM)2InCl5, and the negative temperature dependence of ionic conductance support that the memcapacitor behavior of (CETM)2InCl5·H2O stems from irreversible long-range migration of protons. First-principles calculations further confirm this and clarify the microscale mechanism of anisotropic polarization response. Our findings may open up a new avenue for developing memcapacitors by harnessing the benefits of ion migration in organic-inorganic hybrids.

The quest for high-performance piezoelectric materials has been synonymous with the pursuit of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), yet the full potential of MPBs remains largely untapped outside of the realm of ferroelectrics. In this study, we reveal a new class of MPB by creating continuous molecular-based solid solutions between centro- and noncentrosymmetric compounds, exemplified by (tert-butylammonium)1-x(tert-amylammonium)xFeCl4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1), where the MPB is formed due to disorder of molecular cations. Near the MPB, we discovered an exceptionally sensitive nonlinear optical material in the centrosymmetric phase, capable of activation at pressures as low as 0.12-0.27 GPa, and producing tunable second-harmonic generation (SHG) signals from zero to 18.8 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP). Meanwhile, synchrotron diffraction experiments have unveiled a third competing phase (P212121) appearing at low pressure, forming a triple-phase point near the MPB, thereby providing insight into the mechanism underpinning the nonlinear optical (NLO) switch behavior. These findings highlight the opportunity to harness exceptional physical properties in symmetry-breaking solid solution systems by strategically designing novel MPBs.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a retinal microvascular complication caused by hyperglycemia, which can lead to visual impairment or blindness. Pyroptosis is a type of inflammation-related programmed cell death, activated by caspase-1, resulting in the maturation of IL-1ß and IL-18 and the rupture of the cell membrane. RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) is a high-throughput sequencing technique that reveals the presence and quantity of RNA in the genome at a specific time point, i.e., the transcriptome. RNA-seq can analyze gene expression levels, splicing variants, mutations, fusions, editing and other post-transcriptional modifications, as well as gene expression differences between different samples or conditions. It has been widely used in biological and medical research, clinical diagnosis and new drug development. This study aimed to establish an in vitro model of diabetic retinopathy by culturing human retinal endothelial cells (HREC) with high glucose (30 mmol/L), and to detect their transcriptome expression by RNA-seq, screen for key genes related to pyroptosis, and validate the sequencing results by subsequent experiments. METHODS: We used RNA-seq to detect the transcriptome expression differences between HREC cells cultured with high glucose and control group, and identified differentially expressed genes by GO/KEGG analysis. We constructed a PPI network and determined the key genes by Cytoscape software and CytoHubba plugin. We validated the expression of related factors by Western Blot, qPCR and ELISA. RESULTS: We performed GO and KEGG analysis on the RNA-seq data and found differentially expressed genes. We used Cytoscape and CytoHubba plugin to screen out IRF1 as the key gene, and then detected the expression of IRF1 in HREC under high glucose and control group by Western Blot and qPCR. We found that the expression of Caspase-1, GSDMD and IL-1ß proteins in HREC under high glucose increased, while the expression of these proteins decreased after the inhibition of IRF1 by siRNA. ELISA showed that the secretion of IL-1ß in HREC under high glucose increased, while the inhibition of IRF1 reduced the secretion of IL-1ß. These results indicate that IRF1 plays an important role in DR, and provides a new target and strategy for the prevention and treatment of this disease.

Violet phosphorus (VP) has attracted a lot of attention for its unique physicochemical properties and emerging potential in photoelectronic applications. Although VP has a van der Waals (vdW) structure similar to that of other 2D semiconductors, direct synthesis of VP on a substrate is still challenging. Moreover, optoelectronic devices composed of transfer-free VP flakes have not been demonstrated. Herein, a bismuth-assisted vapor phase transport technique is designed to grow uniform single-crystal VP flakes on the SiO2/Si substrate directly. The size of the crystalline VP flakes is an order of magnitude larger than that of previous liquid-exfoliated samples. The photodetector fabricated with the VP flakes shows a high responsivity of 12.5 A W-1 and response/recovery time of 3.82/3.03 ms upon exposure to 532 nm light. Furthermore, the photodetector shows a small dark current (<1 pA) that is beneficial to high-sensitivity photodetection. As a result, the detectivity is 1.38 × 1013 Jones that is comparable with that of the vdW p-n heterojunction detector. The results reveal the great potential of VP in optoelectronic devices as well as the CVT technique for the growth of single-crystal semiconductor thin films.

We report a theoretical and experimental study on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) suppression in a monolithic fiber amplifier with filtered and amplified pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS) phase modulation. Theoretically, we use a time-dependent three-wave coupled nonlinear system considering both active fiber and passive fiber to describe the acoustic phonon, laser, and Stokes characteristics in a fiber amplifier. The SBS threshold power after filtered PRBS phase modulation is numerically evaluated to obtain the optimal parameters, and the time-averaged distributions of the counter-pump power, laser power, and Stokes power at different positions along the fiber length of the fiber system are simulated. Also, we established a four-stage fiber amplifier system to verify our theory. The configuration of the fiber amplifier system includes a filtered and amplified PRBS phase-modulated single-frequency fiber laser, a three-stage pre-amplifier, and a counter-pumping main stage, subsequently. 2.5 kW output power with an FWHM linewidth of 9.63 GHz is accomplished by a domestic ytterbium-doped double-clad fiber with core/cladding diameters of 20.2/400  µm. The reflectivity of the main stage is 0.049‰ at the maximum output power, which indicates the proposed architecture is under the SBS threshold. The experiments verify the accuracy of the theoretical model, which provides a reliable reference for evaluating the SBS suppression capability of the high-power narrow-linewidth fiber amplifier phase modulated by the filtered and amplified PRBS signal.

Ene-reductase (ER) has been widely applied for asymmetrical synthesis of chiral intermediates due to its substrate promiscuity, photoexcited reactivity, and excellent property with producing two chiral centers at a time. Natural ERs often exhibit the same stereoselectivity, and they need to be engineered for opposite configuration of chiral compounds. The hydrogenation process toward activated alkenes by ERs is composed of reductive half reaction and oxidative half reaction, which are dependent upon two cofactors NAD(P)H and flavin mononucleotide. The catalytic activity of ERs will be affected by the size of the substrate, the activating strength of the electron-withdrawing groups, redox potential of cofactors, and the loop flexibility around catalytic cavity. Currently, protein engineering to ERs has been successfully employed to enhance various catalytic properties, including photoexcited asymmetric synthesis. This review summarizes the approaches to reverse the stereoselectivity and enhance catalytic activity of ERs and new applications of the engineered ERs in photobiocatalytic asymmetric synthesis, besides the discussion with the existing molecular mechanisms of mutants regarding the improved catalytic performance.

INTRODUCTION: Low back disorder (LBD) is a major cause of disability worldwide. Inflammation results in proliferation of cytokines or consequent degradation products (collectively known as inflammatory biomarkers) that activate pain pathways which can result in non-specific LBD. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to evaluate the relationship between inflammatory biomarkers and clinical outcomes in patients with LBD. METHODS: The PRISMA guideline was followed for the systematic reivew. Three online databases were searched. Four RCTs and sixteen observational studies with 1142 LBD patients were analysed. The primary outcomes were back and leg pain scores, back-specific disability scores and expression of inflammatory biomarkers. Standardized mean difference (SMD) and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) were evaluated. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach was used to summarize the strength of evidence. RESULTS: Four RCTs and sixteen observational studies were included in the analysis of 1142 patients with LBD. There was a statistically significant reduction in back pain score and IL-1 beta and increase in the expression of CTX-1 and IL-10 levels post treatment. There was a significant relationship between increase in the expression of MCP- and reduction in the expression of hsCRP with increase in back pain. Significant relationship was also observed between increase in the expression of MCP-1 and reduction in the expression of IL-6 with increase in leg pain. Increase in the expression of IL-8 and reduction in the expression of hsCRP was also associated with increased disability score. CONCLUSION: Inflammatory biomarkers play a significant role in the pathogenesis of LBD. CTX-1, IL-10 and IL-1 beta may be responsible for the decrease in back pain scores post treatment. There is a relationship between MCP-1, IL-6, IL-8 and hsCRP with clinical and functional assessments for LBD. Further studies will improve understanding of the pathogenesis of LBD and aid in targeted management strategies.

Menopause is a normal physiological process accompanied by changes in various physiological states. The incidence of vascular calcification (VC) increases each year after menopause and is closely related to osteoporosis (OP). Although many studies have investigated the links between VC and OP, the interaction mechanism of the two under conditions of estrogen loss remains unclear. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), which are involved in epigenetic modification, play a critical role in estrogen-mediated mineralization. In the past several decades, miRNAs have been identified as biomarkers or therapeutic targets in diseases. Thus, we hypothesize that these small molecules can provide new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. In this review, we summarize the close interactions between VC and OP and the role of miRNAs in their interplay.

The digital economy is a crucial focus for realizing the transformation of old and new kinetic energy in China. It is widely integrated with various fields of the economy and society, constantly providing a new dynamic mechanism with synergetic control of environmental pollution and carbon emissions (SCEPCE). Based on panel data from 292 prefecture-level cities in China from 2011 to 2021, this study discusses the spatial effects and mechanisms of the digital economy on the coordinated control of pollutants and carbon emissions. The study found that: (1) The digital economy has direct and indirect influences on the coordinated control of pollutants and carbon emissions. The digital economy can drive reductions in pollutants and carbon dioxide emissions by upgrading industrial structures and transforming energy structures. (2) Green innovation plays an active regulatory role in the digital economy and structural optimization, particularly in the context of SCEPCE. This interference helps mitigate the impact of the digital economy on pollution and carbon emissions. (3) The digital economy has a significant spatial spillover effect on the coordinated control of pollutants and carbon emissions. (4) The influence mechanism of the digital economy on pollution reduction and carbon reduction synergy exhibits geographical heterogeneity, resource endowment heterogeneity. To enhance the synergy of pollution reduction and carbon reduction, it is essential to bolster support and optimise the digital economy at various levels. This includes reinforcing regional balance, considering spatial spillover effects, and enhancing the leading role of developed cities in the region.

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) has a promising market due to its capacity to regulate human hormone levels as well as preventing and treating various diseases. We have established a chemical esterification coupled biocatalytic-based scheme by lipase-catalyzed 4-androstene-3,17-dione (4-AD) hydrolysis to obtain the intermediate product 5-androstene-3,17-dione (5-AD), which was then asymmetrically reduced by a ketoreductase from Sphingomonas wittichii (SwiKR). Co-enzyme required for KR is regenerated by a glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) from Bacillus subtilis. This scheme is more environmentally friendly and more efficient than the current DHEA synthesis pathway. However, a significant amount of 4-AD as by-product was detected during the catalytic process. Focused on the control of by-products, we investigated the source of 4-AD and identified that it is mainly derived from the isomerization activity of SwiKR and GDH. Increasing the proportion of glucose in the catalytic system as well as optimizing the catalytic conditions drastically reduced 4-AD from 24.7 to 6.5% of total substrate amount, and the final yield of DHEA achieved 40.1 g/L. Furthermore, this is the first time that both SwiKR and GDH have been proved to be promiscuous enzymes with dehydrogenase and ketosteroid isomerase (KSI) activities, expanding knowledge of the substrate diversity of the short-chain dehydrogenase family enzymes. KEY POINTS: • A strategy of coupling lipase, ketoreductase, and glucose dehydrogenase in producing DHEA from 4-AD • Both SwiKR and GDH are identified with ketosteroid isomerase activity. • Development of catalytic strategy to control by-product and achieve highly selective DHEA production.

In this paper, we establish a multi-stage fiber amplifier with pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS) phase modulation. The stimulated Brillouin gain spectra of the main amplifier with both the unmodulated and pseudo-random binary sequence phase modulated configuration are measured (with corresponding output power), and the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) threshold is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The pseudo-random binary sequence phase modulation parameters are optimized by theoretical simulation. With a two-stage preamplifier chain and a counter-pumping main amplifier stage, a maximum 3.05 kW output power with a slope efficiency of 85.9% is obtained experimentally. The central wavelength of the fiber amplifier is 1050 nm, associated with a full-width at half-maximum linewidth of 13.7 GHz. The stimulated Brillouin scattering reflectivity is below 0.01% at 3.05 kW at 13.7 GHz, which indicates that stimulated Brillouin scattering can be suppressed efficiently at this power and linewidth level.

RESUMEN

Photon counting is an effective way to enhance the dynamic range of the data acquisition system (DAQ) in Raman lidars. However, there exists a deficiency of relatively high dead times among current options, which necessitates an additional calibration procedure for the nonlinearity of the photon counting signal, thus leading to unanticipated errors. A field programmable gate array (FPGA)-based photon counting module has been proposed and implemented in a Raman lidar, offering two operational channels. Through observational experiments, it was determined that this module has an overall dead time of 1.13 ns taking advantage of the high-speed amplifier/discriminator pair and the logic design, a significant improvement compared to the 4.35 ns of a commercially used Licel transient recorder within the same counting rate range. This notably low dead time implies that its output maintains sufficient linearity even at substantially high counting rates. As a result, the need for a dead time calibration procedure prior to signal integration with the analog signal is eliminated, reducing uncertainty in the final integrated signal, and even in the retrieval result. The backscattering result of the comparison between this module and a transient recorder indicates that a more precise performance can be acquired benefiting from this hardware upgrading.

PURPOSE: High intensity zones (HIZ) in the lumbar intervertebral disk (IVD) can be associated with degenerative changes which may ultimately manifest as low back pain (LBP). However, the relationship between the prevalence of HIZ and lumbar degenerative parameters is still unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of HIZ in the lumbar spine, analyze the independent relationship between HIZ and lumbar degenerative parameters measured on MRI and X-ray and determine the association between HIZ and the presence of LBP. METHODS: A retrospective review of MRI data, X-ray data, and radiology reports for 136 consecutively recruited patients, above 18-years-age and with both lumbar MRI and X-ray scans was conducted. 57 patients with HIZ were identified. Patients without HIZ (n = 79) made up the control group. RESULTS: HIZ was prevalent in 41.9% of patients and in 11.0% of all lumbar IVDs. The odds of developing HIZ were 6.4 (Exp(B) 6.4, 95%CI [3.157-12.988]) and 3.0 (Exp(B) 3.0, 95%CI [1.603, 5.674]) times higher in IVDs with disk bulge/protrusion and nucleus degeneration, respectively. Odds of HIZ was also increased in disks with larger IVD angle (Exp(B) 1.1, 95%CI [1.034, 1.169]). The odds of patients presenting to imaging with LBP was 3.0 (OR 3.0, 95%CI [1.478-6.338]) times higher in the HIZ compared to the control group. CONCLUSIONS: HIZ was prevalent in 41.9% of participants that were recruited in this study. Nucleus degeneration, disk bulge/protrusion and increased IVD angle were found to be independently associated with HIZ and since there is an increased likelihood of LBP, we posit that HIZ is likely a symptomatic and clinically meaningful diagnostic tool in the assessment of LBP.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate preoperative (pre-op) radiographic characteristics and specific surgical interventions in patients with degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DLS) who underwent lumbar fusion surgery (LFS), with a focus on analyzing predictors of postoperative restoration of segmental lumbar lordosis (SLL). METHODS: A retrospective review at a single center identified consecutive single-level DLS patients who underwent LFS between 2016 and 2022. Radiographic measures included disc angle (DA), SLL, lumbar lordosis (LL), anterior/posterior disc height (ADH/PDH), spondylolisthesis percentage (SP), intervertebral disc degeneration, and paraspinal muscle quality. Surgery-related measures included cage position, screw insertion depth, spondylolisthesis reduction rate, and disc height restoration rate. A change in SLL ≥ 4° indicated increased segmental lumbar lordosis (ISLL), and unincreased segmental lumbar lordosis (UISLL) < 4°. Propensity score matching was employed for a 1:1 match between ISLL and UISLL patients based on age, gender, body mass index, smoking status, and osteoporosis condition. RESULTS: A total of 192 patients with an average follow-up of 20.9 months were enrolled. Compared to UISLL patients, ISLL patients had significantly lower pre-op DA (6.78° vs. 11.84°), SLL (10.73° vs. 18.24°), LL (42.59° vs. 45.75°), and ADH (10.09 mm vs. 12.21 mm) (all, P < 0.05). ISLL patients were predisposed to more severe intervertebral disc degeneration (P = 0.047) and higher SP (21.30% vs. 19.39%, P = 0.019). The cage was positioned more anteriorly in ISLL patients (67.00% vs. 60.08%, P = 0.000), with more extensive reduction of spondylolisthesis (- 73.70% vs. - 56.16%, P = 0.000) and higher restoration of ADH (33.34% vs. 8.11%, P = 0.000). Multivariate regression showed that lower pre-op SLL (OR 0.750, P = 0.000), more anterior cage position (OR 1.269, P = 0.000), and a greater spondylolisthesis reduction rate (OR 0.965, P = 0.000) significantly impacted SLL restoration. CONCLUSIONS: Pre-op SLL, cage position, and spondylolisthesis reduction rate were identified as significant predictors of SLL restoration after LFS for DLS. Surgeons are advised to meticulously select patients based on pre-op SLL and strive to position the cage more anteriorly while minimizing spondylolisthesis to maximize SLL restoration.

PURPOSE: To evaluate outcomes of choosing different Roussouly shapes and improving in Schwab modifiers for surgical Roussouly type 1 patients. METHODS: Baseline (BL) and 2-year (2Y) clinical data of adult spinal deformity (ASD) patients presenting with Roussouly type 1 sagittal spinal alignment were isolated in the single-center spine database. Patients were grouped into Roussouly type 1, 2 and 3 with anteverted pelvis (3a) postoperatively. Schwab modifiers at BL and 2Y were categorized as follows: no deformity (0), moderate deformity (+), and severe deformity (++) for pelvic tilt (PT), sagittal vertical axis (SVA), and pelvic incidence and lumbar lordosis mismatch (PI-LL). Improvement in SRS-Schwab was defined as a decrease in the severity of any modifier at 2Y. RESULTS: A total of 96 patients (69.9 years, 72.9% female, 25.2 kg/m2) were included. At 2Y, there were 34 type 1 backs, 60 type 2 backs and only 2 type 3a. Type 1 and type 2 did not differ in rates of reaching 2Y minimal clinically important difference (MCID) for health-related quality of life (HRQOL) scores (all P > 0.05). Two patients who presented with type 3a had poor HRQOL scores. Analysis of Schwab modifiers showed that 41.7% of patients improved in SVA, 45.8% in PI-LL, and 36.5% in PT. At 2Y, patients who improved in SRS-Schwab PT and SVA had lower Oswestry disability index (ODI) scores and significantly more of them reached MCID for ODI (all P < 0.001). Patients who improved in SRS-Schwab SVA and PI-LL had more changes of VAS Back and Short Form-36 (SF-36) outcomes questionnaire physical component summary (SF-36 PCS), and significantly more reached MCID (all P < 0.001). By 2Y, type 2 patients who improved in SRS-Schwab grades reached MCID for VAS back and ODI at the highest rate (P = 0.003, P = 0.001, respectively), and type 1 patients who improved in SRS-Schwab grades reached MCID for SF-36 PCS at the highest rate (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: For ASD patients classified as Roussouly type 1, postoperative improvement in SRS-Schwab grades reflected superior patient-reported outcomes while type 1 and type 2 did not differ in clinical outcomes at 2Y. However, development of type 3a should be avoided at the risk of poor functional outcomes. Utilizing both classification systems in surgical decision-making can optimize postoperative outcomes.
