RESUMEN

Understanding the mechanisms of colloid transport and retention as well as the spatial distribution of colloids in porous media is an important topic for contamination transport and remediation in subsurface environments. Utilizing advanced three-dimensional visualization experiments, we effectively capture the intricate distribution characteristics of colloids in the 3D pore space and quantify the size of colloid clusters that aggregate at fluid-fluid interfaces and solid surfaces during two-phase flow. Our experimental results reveal the influence of pore-scale events, such as Haines jumps and pinch-off, on colloid retention. Our results also indicate that large drainage rates can facilitate colloid retention on solid surfaces, especially under the condition of high ionic strength. This can be attributed to the migration of colloids from the fluid-fluid interface to the solid surface, propelled by transients in the local fluid structure. The findings reveal a synergistic effect of the ionic strength and hydrodynamic conditions on colloid transport and retention during two-phase flow and provide important insights for predicting the fate and transport of contaminants in soil and groundwater environments involving multiple fluid phases.

RESUMEN

The objective of this investigation is to evaluate the characteristics associated with degradation of toluene through the utilization of non-thermal plasma (NTP) generated via application of a low-work-function electrode and nanosecond pulsed power supply. Initially, a comparative analysis is made between toluene removal efficiency utilizing the low-work-function electrode and that achieved with the conventional stainless-steel electrode. The outcomes demonstrate that NTP generated by the low-work-function electrode exhibits markedly superior removal efficiency for toluene in comparison to the stainless-steel electrode operating at the same voltage. Subsequently, the impacts of voltage, pulse frequency, and initial concentration of toluene on the removal efficiency and production of by-products are investigated. It is found that as the voltage and frequency increase, the removal efficiency also increases, and a maximum toluene removal efficiency of 87.2% is achieved at a voltage of 12,000 V and pulse frequency of 2000 Hz. The removal efficiency first increases and then decreases with increasing toluene initial concentration. The investigation also finds that energy yield is negatively correlated with voltage and pulse frequency and positively correlated with the initial concentration. Finally, the reaction products were subjected to quantitative analysis using GC-MS. Based on the analysis results, potential reaction pathways are inferred.

RESUMEN

Objectives: The primary objective of this study was to present the progressive changes from labyrinthitis to endolymphatic hydrops (EH) demonstrated in the inner ear MRI of a patient with MD and suspected immune dysfunction. Patient: This 31-year-old male was diagnosed with MD and suspected autoimmune diseases. Interventions: Immunosuppressants and biological agents. Main outcomes measures: Inner ear MRI images. Results: Changes in the patient's progress revealed that inner ear immune and inflammatory changes might induce EH, which may eventually turn into MD. Conclusion: This case is the first documented case of MRI revealing progressive changes from inflammatory response to endolymphatic hydrops in the inner ear. It shows the correlation between MD and inflammation visually. It is of great significance to reveal the pathogenesis of MD to further assist in the guidance of treatment decision making.

RESUMEN

The fast reduction of the physical size of film bulk acoustic wave resonators as a layered structure implies the intensification of the electric field which can induce large deformation in the functioning state of devices as a circuit element. Consequently, the nonlinear behavior of the resonator and accompanying properties are to be included and evaluated in the development and optimization for performance improvement. With this objective, the nonlinear formulation of a multilayered film bulk acoustic resonator is presented for the analysis of vibration frequencies and mode shapes with the consideration of larger mechanical deformation. The dominantly linear relationship between the voltage or deformation and frequency is obtained to understand the nonlinear behavior and properties which have been subjected to extensive research analytically and experimentally to satisfy the application needs in all modes of communications and network technology.

RESUMEN

Objective: The present study aimed to explore the pathogenesis of the ascending sudden sensorineural hearing (SSNHL) loss by comparing the clinical characteristics and prognosis of acute low-frequency hearing loss (ALFHL) and ascending SSNHL. Methods: A total of 43 patients with ALFHL and 122 patients with ascending SSNHL were enrolled in this study. First, the prognosis of patients with ALFHL and ascending SSNHL were compared, and the prognostic factors of AFHL and ascending SSNHL were analyzed. Results: Acute low-frequency hearing loss and ascending SSNHL have no remarkable difference in complete recovery rate. Compared to ascending SSNHL, ALFHL has younger onset age, female prevalence, lower hearing threshold, shorter time from onset to recovery, and a lower proportion of combined tinnitus. The PTA at admission and delay from onset to therapy were significantly related to the prognosis of patients with ascending SSNHL, while only delay from onset to therapy was significantly related to the prognosis of patients with ALFHL. The majority of patients with ascending SSNHL and ALFHL recovered completely within 10 days from onset. Conclusion: Audiogram shape plays a critical role in the prognosis of SSNHL. Ascending SSNHL and ALFHL may share a common pathological mechanism.
