RESUMEN

Plasmonic nanoparticle clusters promise to support unique engineered electromagnetic responses at optical frequencies, realizing a new concept of devices for nanophotonic applications. However, the technological challenges associated with the fabrication of three-dimensional nanoparticle clusters with programmed compositions remain unresolved. Here, we present a novel strategy for realizing heterogeneous structures that enable efficient near-field coupling between the plasmonic modes of gold nanoparticles and various other nanomaterials via a simple three-dimensional coassembly process. Quantum dots embedded in the plasmonic structures display ∼56 meV of a blue shift in the emission spectrum. The decay enhancement factor increases as the total contribution of radiative and nonradiative plasmonic modes increases. Furthermore, we demonstrate an ultracompact diagnostic platform to detect M13 viruses and their mutations from femtoliter volume, sub-100 pM analytes. This platform could pave the way toward an effective diagnosis of diverse pathogens, which is in high demand for handling pandemic situations.

Neuromelanin (NM)-sensitive MRI using a magnetization transfer (MT)-prepared T1-weighted sequence has been suggested as a tool to visualize NM contents in the brain. In this study, a new NM-sensitive imaging method, sandwichNM, is proposed by utilizing the incidental MT effects of spatial saturation RF pulses in order to generate consistent high-quality NM images using product sequences. The spatial saturation pulses are located both superior and inferior to the imaging volume, increasing MT weighting while avoiding asymmetric MT effects. When the parameters of the spatial saturation were optimized, sandwichNM reported a higher NM contrast ratio than those of conventional NM-sensitive imaging methods with matched parameters for comparability with sandwichNM (SandwichNM: 23.6 ± 5.4%; MT-prepared TSE: 20.6 ± 7.4%; MT-prepared GRE: 17.4 ± 6.0%). In a multi-vendor experiment, the sandwichNM images displayed higher means and lower standard deviations of the NM contrast ratio across subjects in all three vendors (SandwichNM vs. MT-prepared GRE; Vendor A: 28.4 ± 1.5% vs. 24.4 ± 2.8%; Vendor B: 27.2 ± 1.0% vs. 13.3 ± 1.3%; Vendor C: 27.3 ± 0.7% vs. 20.1 ± 0.9%). For each subject, the standard deviations of the NM contrast ratio across the vendors were substantially lower in SandwichNM (SandwichNM vs. MT-prepared GRE; subject 1: 1.5% vs. 8.1%, subject 2: 1.1 % vs. 5.1%, subject 3: 0.9% vs. 4.0%, subject 4: 1.1% vs. 5.3%), demonstrating consistent contrasts across the vendors. The proposed method utilizes product sequences, requiring no alteration of a sequence and, therefore, may have a wide practical utility in exploring the NM imaging.

BACKGROUND: In patients with sellar or parasellar tumors, it is crucial to evaluate visual field impairment in the preoperative stage and to predict visual field improvement after the surgery. The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI) parameters in the optic radiations with preoperative and postoperative visual field impairment. METHODS: This prospective study included 81 participants with sellar or parasellar tumors. Multishell diffusion imaging and a visual field impairment score (VFIS) were acquired before and after the surgery. The multishell diffusion-weighted imaging was acquired to measure the neurite density and neurite orientation dispersion, as well as the diffusivity. DTI parameters were fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity, and radial diffusivity (RD). NODDI provided intracellular volume fraction (Vic), the orientation dispersion index, and isotropic volume fraction (Viso). The associations of DTI and NODDI parameters in the optic radiations with VFIS were investigated, adjusting for age, tumor height, and symptom duration. RESULTS: Among 162 optic radiations, 117 were functionally impaired in the preoperative stage. FA and Vic had significant negative correlations, whereas MD and RD had significant positive correlations with the VFIS (all P < 0.001). In the preoperative stage, lower FA (P = 0.001; odds ratio = 0.750) and Vic (P = 0.003; OR = 0.827) and higher MD (P = 0.007; OR = 1.244) and RD (P < 0.001; OR = 1.361) were significantly associated with the presence of visual field impairment. For the degree of postoperative improvement, preoperative lower Vic (P = 0.034; OR = 0.910) and higher MD (P = 0.037; OR = 1.103) and RD (P = 0.047; OR = 1.090) were significantly associated with more postoperative improvement. CONCLUSIONS: DTI and NODDI parameters in the optic radiations were correlated with VFIS and associated with preoperative visual field impairments and postoperative improvement. It may help in predicting visual field improvement after the surgery in patients with sellar or parasellar tumors.

Biomacromolecules are likely to undergo self-assembly and show specific collective behavior concentrated in the medium. Although the assembly procedures have been studied for unraveling their mysteries, there are few cases to directly demonstrate the collective behavior and phase transition process in dynamic systems. In the contribution, the drying process of M13 droplet is investigated, and can be successfully simulated by a doctor blade coating method. The morphologies in the deposited film are measured by atomic force microscopy and the liquid crystal phase development is captured in real time using polarized optical microscope. Collective behaviors near the contact line are characterized by the shape of meniscus curve and particle movement velocity. With considering rheological properties and flow, the resultant chiral film is used to align gold nanorods, and this approach can suggest a way to use M13 bacteriophage as a scaffold for the multi-functional chiral structures.

RESUMEN

Myelin water imaging (MWI) is an MRI imaging biomarker for myelin. This method can generate an in vivo whole-brain myelin water fraction map in approximately 10 minutes. It has been applied in various applications including neurodegenerative disease, neurodevelopmental, and neuroplasticity studies. In this review we start with a brief introduction of myelin biology and discuss the contributions of myelin in conventional MRI contrasts. Then the MRI properties of myelin water and four different MWI methods, which are categorized as T2 -, T2 *-, T1 -, and steady-state-based MWI, are summarized. After that, we cover more practical issues such as availability, interpretation, and validation of these methods. To illustrate the utility of MWI as a clinical research tool, MWI studies for two diseases, multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica, are introduced. Additional topics about imaging myelin in gray matter and non-MWI methods for myelin imaging are also included. Although technical and physiological limitations exist, MWI is a potent surrogate biomarker of myelin that carries valuable and useful information of myelin. Raynaud's phenomenon, which is characterized by episodic digital pallor, cyanosis and rubor upon exposure to cold environment or to stress, is relatively common, although the prevalence depends on the climate. Still, it is under-diagnosed, under-treated, and often confused with other conditions. Primary Raynaud's phenomenon (i.e., Raynaud disease) must be distinguished from secondary Raynaud's phenomenon (i.e., Raynaud syndrome) as long-term morbidity and outcomes differ vastly between the two conditions. Additionally, the practitioner must differentiate between Raynaud's phenomenon and related vascular disorders, such as acrocyanosis, pernio, and livedo reticularis. In this article, we review differences between the conditions and suggest an approach to diagnosis and treatment strategy for these disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Echocardiography is commonly performed in the evaluation of patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH). The report summary often serves to guide the future evaluation of these patients. Our aim was to explore the relationship between the echocardiography reports of patients with PH and referral to a PH specialty clinic. METHODS: A random sample of 500 echocardiographic reports of patients with an estimated right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP) greater than 40 mm Hg between 2006 and 2014 was selected from the institutional database of a single academic center. Referral to the PH clinic was determined by evaluating the electronic medical record. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify characteristics associated with referral. RESULTS: Pulmonary hypertension was mentioned in 31% of the report summaries, and only 4.6% were referred to the PH clinic. Variables associated with referral were younger age, indication for echocardiography, higher right atrial and ventricular (RV) systolic pressures, RV dilatation, mention of PH in the summary, and higher left ventricular ejection fraction. Mention of PH in the summary was the variable most strongly associated with referral (adjusted odds ratio 4.6, 95% CI 1.5-14.2). CONCLUSION: Pulmonary hypertension was infrequently mentioned in the summary of echocardiography reports of patients with RVSP >40 mm Hg. Referral to the PH clinic was rare but occurred more often following the mention of PH in the summary. Explicit mention of the presence of PH in the echocardiography report summary may facilitate referral to a specialty clinic and allow more comprehensive evaluation of PH.

An Optical Wide-field patroL-Network (OWL-Net) has been developed for maintaining Korean low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites' orbital ephemeris. The OWL-Net consists of five optical tracking stations. Brightness signals of reflected sunlight of the targets were detected by a charged coupled device (CCD). A chopper system was adopted for fast astrometric data sampling, maximum 50 Hz, within a short observation time. The astrometric accuracy of the optical observation data was validated with precise orbital ephemeris such as Consolidated Prediction File (CPF) data and precise orbit determination result with onboard Global Positioning System (GPS) data from the target satellite. In the optical observation simulation of the OWL-Net for 2017, an average observation span for a single arc of 11 LEO observation targets was about 5 min, while an average optical observation separation time was 5 h. We estimated the position and velocity with an atmospheric drag coefficient of LEO observation targets using a sequential-batch orbit estimation technique after multi-arc batch orbit estimation. Post-fit residuals for the multi-arc batch orbit estimation and sequential-batch orbit estimation were analyzed for the optical measurements and reference orbit (CPF and GPS data). The post-fit residuals with reference show few tens-of-meters errors for in-track direction for multi-arc batch and sequential-batch orbit estimation results.

An abnormally high number of macrophages are present in human brain arteriovenous malformations (bAVM) with or without evidence of prior hemorrhage, causing unresolved inflammation that may enhance abnormal vascular remodeling and exacerbate the bAVM phenotype. The reasons for macrophage accumulation at the bAVM sites are not known. We tested the hypothesis that persistent infiltration and pro-inflammatory differentiation of monocytes in angiogenic tissues increase the macrophage burden in bAVM using two mouse models and human monocytes. Mouse bAVM was induced through deletion of AVM causative genes, Endoglin (Eng) globally or Alk1 focally, plus brain focal angiogenic stimulation. An endothelial cell and vascular smooth muscle cell co-culture system was used to analyze monocyte differentiation in the angiogenic niche. After angiogenic stimulation, the Eng-deleted mice had fewer CD68(+) cells at 2 weeks (P = 0.02), similar numbers at 4 weeks (P = 0.97), and more at 8 weeks (P = 0.01) in the brain angiogenic region compared with wild-type (WT) mice. Alk1-deficient mice also had a trend toward more macrophages/microglia 8 weeks (P = 0.064) after angiogenic stimulation and more RFP(+) bone marrow-derived macrophages than WT mice (P = 0.01). More CD34(+) cells isolated from peripheral blood of patients with ENG or ALK1 gene mutation differentiated into macrophages than those from healthy controls (P < 0.001). These data indicate that persistent infiltration and pro-inflammatory differentiation of monocytes might contribute to macrophage accumulation in bAVM. Blocking macrophage homing to bAVM lesions should be tested as a strategy to reduce the severity of bAVM.

Live attenuated vaccines are extensively used worldwide to control the outbreak of infectious laryngotracheitis. Virulent field strains showing close genetic relationship with the infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV) vaccines of chicken embryo origin have been detected in the poultry industry. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis, a reliable molecular epidemiological method, of multiple genomic regions was performed. The PCR-RFLP is a time-consuming method that requires considerable amount of intact viral genomic DNA to amplify genomic regions greater than 4 kb. In this study, six variable genomic regions were selected and amplified for sequencing. The multi-allelic PCR-sequence genotyping showed better discrimination power than that of previous PCR-sequencing schemes using single or two target regions. The allelic variation patterns yielded 16 strains of ILTV classified into 14 different genotypes. Three Korean field strains, 550/05/Ko, 0010/05/Ko and 40032/08/Ko, were found to have the same genotype as the commercial vaccine strain, Laryngo Vac (Zoetis, Florham Park, NJ, USA). Three other Korean field strains, 40798/10/Ko, 12/07/Ko, and 30678/14/Ko, showed recombined allelic patterns. The multi-allelic PCR-sequencing method was proved to be an efficient and practical procedure to classify the different strains of ILTV. The method could serve as an alternate diagnostic and differentiating tool for the classification of ILTV, and contribute to understanding of the epidemiology of the disease at a global level.

Periostin, an extracellular matrix protein, is expressed in injured tissues, such as the heart with myocardial infarction, and promotes angiogenesis and tissue repair. However, the molecular mechanism associated with periostin-stimulated angiogenesis and tissue repair is still unclear. In order to clarify the role of periostin in neovascularization, we examined the effect of periostin in angiogenic potentials of human endothelial colony forming cells (ECFCs) in vitro and in an ischemic limb animal model. Recombinant periostin protein stimulated the migration and tube formation of ECFCs. To identify the functional domains of periostin implicated in angiogenesis, five fragments of periostin, including four repeating FAS-1 domains and a carboxyl terminal domain, were expressed in Escherichia coli and purified to homogeneity. Of the five different domains, the first FAS-1 domain stimulated the migration and tube formation of human ECFCs as potent as the whole periostin. Chemotactic migration of ECFCs induced by the full length and the first FAS-1 domain of periostin was abrogated by blocking antibodies against ß3 and ß5 integrins. Intramuscular injection of the full length and the first FAS-1 domain of periostin into the ischemic hindlimb of mice attenuated severe limb loss and promoted blood perfusion and homing of intravenously administered ECFCs to the ischemic limb. These results suggest that the first FAS-1 domain is responsible for periostin-induced migration and angiogenesis and it can be used as a therapeutic tool for treatment of peripheral artery occlusive disease by stimulating homing of ECFCs.

Fish are faced with a wide range of hydrostatic pressure (HP) in their natural habitats. Additionally, freshwater fish are occasionally exposed to rapid changes in HP due to heavy rainfall, flood and/or dam release. Accordingly, variations in HP are one of the most important environmental cues for fish. However, little information is available on how HP information is perceived and transmitted in the central nervous system of fish. The present study examined the effect of HP (water depth of 1.3 m) on the quantities of monoamines and their metabolites in the telencephalon, optic tectum, diencephalon, cerebellum (including partial mesencephalon) and vagal lobe (including medulla oblongata) of the goldfish, Carassius auratus, using high-performance liquid chromatography. HP affected monoamine and metabolite contents in restricted brain regions, including the telencephalon, cerebellum and vagal lobe. In particular, HP significantly increased the levels of dopamine (DA) in the telencephalon at 15 min and that of norepinephrine (NE) in the cerebellum at 30 min. In addition, HP also significantly increased locomotor activity at 15 and 30 min after HP treatment. It is possible that HP indirectly induces locomotion in goldfish via telencephalic DA and cerebellar NE neuronal activity.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Endoglin deficiency causes hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia-1 and impairs myocardial repair. Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations in patients with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia-1 are associated with a high incidence of paradoxical embolism in the cerebral circulation and ischemic brain injury. We hypothesized that endoglin deficiency impairs stroke recovery. METHODS: Eng heterozygous (Eng+/-) and wild-type mice underwent permanent distal middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO). Pial collateral vessels were quantified before pMCAO. Infarct/atrophic volume, vascular density, and macrophages were quantified in various days after pMCAO, and behavioral function was assessed using corner and adhesive removal tests on days 3, 15, 30, and 60 after pMCAO. The association between ENG 207G>A polymorphism and brain arteriovenous malformation rupture and surgery outcome was analyzed using logistic regression analysis in 256 ruptured and 157 unruptured patients. RESULTS: After pMCAO, Eng+/- mice showed larger infarct/atrophic volumes at all time points (P<0.05) and showed worse behavior performance (P<0.05) at 15, 30, and 60 days when compared with wild-type mice. Eng+/- mice had fewer macrophages on day 3 (P=0.009) and more macrophages on day 60 (P=0.02) in the peri-infarct region. Although Eng+/- and wild-type mice had similar numbers of pial collateral vessels before pMCAO, Eng+/- mice had lower vascular density in the peri-infarct region (P=0.05) on day 60 after pMCAO. In humans, ENG 207A allele has been associated with worse outcomes after arteriovenous malformation rupture or surgery of patients with unruptured arteriovenous malformation. CONCLUSIONS: Endoglin deficiency impairs brain injury recovery. Reduced angiogenesis, impaired macrophage homing, and delayed inflammation resolution could be the underlying mechanism.

PURPOSE: To measure the activity of individual raphe nuclei with fluorine 18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) and carbon 11 ((11)C) 3-amino-4-(2-dimethylaminomethylphenylthio) benzonitrile (DASB) imaging using a brain positron emission tomography(PET)/magnetic resonance (MR) imaging fusion system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of Gil Medical Center, and all volunteers provided written informed consent. FDG PET, (11)C-DASB PET, and T2*-weighted MR images from seven healthy volunteers were acquired by using a PET/MR imaging fusion system. The standard uptake value ratio (SUVR) of FDG (FDG-SUVR) and nondisplaceable binding potential (BPnd) of (11)C-DASB (DASB-BPnd) were determined for each raphe nucleus. A Pearson correlation analysis was performed to show the correlation between FDG-SUVR and DASB-BPnd for the raphe nuclei. RESULTS: Each raphe nucleus could be distinguished in both FDG (identifiability ratio, 0.86; κ = 0.77) and (11)C-DASB (identifiability ratio, 0.89; κ = 0.72) images. The mean values of DASB-BPnd for each raphe nucleus from dorsal to caudal direction were 6.08 (raphe nucleus 1), 5.93 (raphe nucleus 2), 3.86 (raphe nucleus 3), 3.18 (raphe nucleus 4), and 2.74 (raphe nucleus 5); the mean FDG-SUVR values were 1.00 (raphe nucleus 1), 1.00 (raphe nucleus 2), 0.87 (raphe nucleus 3), 0.94 (raphe nucleus 4), and 0.90 (raphe nucleus 5). FDG-SUVR and DASB-BPnd for the raphe nuclei were significantly correlated (r = 0.506, P = .002). CONCLUSION: Serotonergic activity, both glucose metabolism and transporter binding potential of raphe nuclei, were measured with a brain-dedicated PET/MR imaging system and showed a significant correlation.

RESUMEN

Sepsis, a condition characterized by life-threatening organ dysfunction due to a dysregulated host response to infection, significantly impacts global health, with mortality rates varying widely across regions. Traditional therapeutic strategies that target hyperinflammation and immunosuppression have largely failed to improve outcomes, underscoring the need for innovative approaches. This review examines the development of therapeutic agents for sepsis, with a focus on clinical trials addressing hyperinflammation and immunosuppression. It highlights the frequent failures of these trials, explores the underlying reasons, and outlines current research efforts aimed at bridging the gap between theoretical advancements and clinical applications. Although personalized medicine and phenotypic categorization present promising directions, this review emphasizes the importance of understanding the complex pathogenesis of sepsis and developing targeted, effective therapies to enhance patient outcomes. By addressing the multifaceted nature of sepsis, future research can pave the way for more precise and individualized treatment strategies, ultimately improving the management and prognosis of sepsis patients.

Stem cell technology holds immense potential for revolutionizing medicine, particularly in regenerative treatment for heart disease. The unique capacity of stem cells to differentiate into diverse cell types offers promise in repairing damaged tissues and implanting organs. Ensuring the quality of differentiated cells, essential for specific functions, demands in-depth analysis. However, this process consumes time and incurs substantial costs while invasive methods may alter stem cell features during differentiation and deplete cell numbers. To address these challenges, we propose a non-invasive strategy, using cellular respiration, to assess the quality of differentiation-induced stem cells, notably cardiovascular stem cells. This evaluation employs an electronic nose (E-Nose) and neural pattern separation (NPS). Our goal is to assess differentiation-induced cardiac stem cells (DICs) quality through E-Nose data analysis and compare it with standard commercial human cells (SCHCs). Sensitivity and specificity were evaluated by interacting SCHCs and DICs with the E-Nose, achieving over 90% classification accuracy. Employing selective combinations optimized by NPS, E-Nose successfully classified all six cell types. Consequently, the relative similarity among DICs like cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells with SCHCs was established relied on comparing response data from the E-Nose sensor without resorting to complex evaluations.

BACKGROUND: Cardiomyopathy (CDM) in pregnancy is associated with maternal morbidity and mortality. OBJECTIVES: To explore trends and clinical outcomes in CDM subtypes during delivery hospitalizations. METHODS: We used the National Inpatient Sample database to identify delivery hospitalizations between 2005-2020 by CDM subtypes: peripartum (PPCM), dilated (DCM), hypertrophic (HCM), and restrictive (RCM). Maternal and fetal outcomes were identified using International Classification of Diseases, 9th and 10th Revision, Clinical Modification codes. Baseline characteristics and temporal trends of CDM subtypes were analyzed. Maternal cardiovascular, pregnancy, and fetal outcomes were evaluated by CDM subtype using univariate logistic regression. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. RESULTS: During 2005-2020, 37,125 out of 61,811,842 delivery hospitalizations were complicated by CDM. Among CDM-related delivery hospitalizations, the most prevalent were DCM (46%), followed by PPCM (45.6%), HCM (4.6%), and RCM (3.9%). The rates of in-hospital mortality (1.7%), adverse cardiovascular events such as acute heart failure (17%), cardiogenic shock (3.4%), and cardiac arrest (3.1%), and adverse pregnancy outcomes such as preeclampsia (14.2%) and preterm labor (11%), were highest among PPCM (all p < 0.0001). The prevalence of PPCM (49.1% to 38.5%) decreased while the prevalence of HCM (2.7% to 8.8%) and DCM (48% to 52.2%) increased over time. CONCLUSIONS: Over a 15-year period, PPCM had higher rates of in-hospital mortality, cardiovascular events, and adverse pregnancy outcomes compared to other CDM subtypes. While the prevalence of PPCM decreased over time, the prevalence of HCM and DCM increased. Hence, further research on cardiomyopathies during pregnancy and prospective studies on this vulnerable patient cohort are urgently needed.

The colorimetric sensor-based electronic nose has been demonstrated to discriminate specific gaseous molecules for various applications, including health or environmental monitoring. However, conventional colorimetric sensor systems rely on RGB sensors, which cannot capture the complete spectral response of the system. This limitation can degrade the performance of machine learning analysis, leading to inaccurate identification of chemicals with similar functional groups. Here, we propose a novel time-resolved hyperspectral (TRH) data set from colorimetric array sensors consisting of 1D spatial, 1D spectral, and 1D temporal axes, which enables hierarchical analysis of multichannel 2D spectrograms via a convolution neural network (CNN). We assessed the outstanding classification performance of the TRH data set compared to an RGB data set by conducting a relative humidity (RH) concentration classification. The time-dependent spectral response of the colorimetric sensor was measured and trained as a CNN model using TRH and RGB sensor systems at different RH levels. While the TRH model shows a high classification accuracy of 97.5% for the RH concentration, the RGB model yields 72.5% under identical conditions. Furthermore, we demonstrated the detection of various functional volatile gases with the TRH system by using experimental and simulation approaches. The results reveal distinct spectral features from the TRH system, corresponding to changes in the concentration of each substance.

BACKGROUND: Rural-urban disparities in peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) are not well known. We examined rural-urban differences in maternal, fetal, and cardiovascular outcomes in PPCM during delivery hospitalizations. METHODS: We used 2003-2020 data from the National Inpatient Sample for delivery hospitalizations in individuals with PPCM. The 9th and 10th editions of the International Classification of Diseases were used to identify PPCM and cardiovascular, maternal, and fetal outcomes. Rural and urban hospitalizations for PPCM were 1:1 propensity score-matched using relevant clinical and sociodemographic variables. Odds of in-hospital mortality were assessed using logistic regression. RESULTS: Among 72,880 delivery hospitalizations with PPCM, 4,571 occurred in rural locations, while 68,309 occurred in urban locations. After propensity matching, there were a total of 4,571 rural-urban pairs. There was significantly higher in-hospital mortality in urban compared to rural hospitalizations (adjusted OR 1.54, 95% CI 1.10-1.89). Urban PPCM hospitalizations had significantly higher cardiogenic shock (2.9% vs. 1.3%), mechanical circulatory support (1.0% vs. 0.6%), cardiac arrest (2.3% vs. 0.9%), and VT/VF (4.5% vs. 2.1%, all p <.05). Additionally, urban PPCM hospitalizations had worse maternal and fetal outcomes as compared to rural hospitalizations, including higher preterm delivery, gestational diabetes, and fetal death (all p<.05). Notably, significantly more rural individuals were transferred to a short-term hospital (including tertiary care centers) compared to urban individuals (13.5% vs. 3.2%, p<.0001). CONCLUSIONS: There are significant rural-urban disparities in delivery hospitalizations with PPCM. Worse outcomes were associated with urban hospitalizations, while rural PPCM hospitalizations were associated with increased transfers, suggesting inadequate resources and advanced sickness.
