RESUMEN

A numerical model for three-dimensional echo decorrelation imaging, a pulse-echo ultrasound method applicable to thermal ablation monitoring, is presented. Beam patterns for steered transmit and receive array apertures are combined with a three-dimensional numerical tissue model to yield beamformed scan lines in a pyramidal configuration, volumetric B-mode images, and spatial maps of normalized decorrelation between sequential image volumes. Simulated three-dimensional echo decorrelation images of random media are analyzed as estimators of local tissue reflectivity decoherence, mimicking thermal ablation effects. The estimation error is analyzed as a function of correlation window size, scan line density, and ensemble averaging of decorrelation maps.

RESUMEN

Over recent years, quantification of multiple proteins in body fluids has become increasingly prominent, which is beneficial to a number of scientific fields, not least biomedical. Several techniques have been developed based on conventional ELISA; one of these techniques is analysis of proteins labelled with element-tagged antibodies by ICP-MS in serum, allowing quantification of multiple targets within a single sample. This research aimed to quantify albumin and immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels in plasma, whole blood and dried blood spots using NANOGOLD® and Europium labelled antibodies analysed by ICP-MS. Before the proteins were quantified simultaneously, albumin and IgG concentrations were measured separately and compared to protein levels obtained by ELISA. It was found that protein concentrations for both albumin and IgG obtained with element-labelled antibody detection correspond to those determined by ELISA. Furthermore, albumin and IgG levels measured simultaneously by ICP-MS correspond to concentrations found when the proteins were analysed separately by ICP-MS. Finally, development of this method has provided a positive indication that it can be extended to quantification of additional proteins, which could be related to a disease or as a minimum provide additional information for a protein profile of an individual.

RESUMEN

Metareasoning suffers from the heterogeneity problem, in which different researchers build diverse metareasoning models for intelligent systems with comparable functionality but differing contexts, ambiguous terminology, and occasionally contradicting features and descriptions. This article presents an ontology-driven knowledge representation for metareasoning in intelligent systems. The proposed ontology, called IM-Onto, provides a visual means of sharing a common understanding of the structure and relationships between terms and concepts. A rigorous research method was followed to ensure that the two main requirements of the ontology (integrity based on relevant knowledge and acceptance by researchers and practitioners) were met. The high accuracy rate indicates that most of the knowledge elements in the ontology are useful information for the integration of multiple types of metareasoning problems in intelligent systems.
