RESUMEN

Incorporation of photolabile moieties into the polymer backbone holds promise to remotely-control polymer degradation. However, suitable synthetic avenues are limited, especially for radical polymerizations. Here we report a strategy to program photodegradability into vinylic polymers by exploiting the wavelength selectivity of photocycloadditions for radical ring-opening polymerization (rROP). Irradiation of coumarin terminated allylic sulfides with UVA light initiated intramolecular [2+2] photocycloaddition producing cyclic macromonomers. Subsequent RAFT-mediated rROP with methyl acrylate yielded copolymers that inherited the photoreactivity of the cyclic parent monomer. Irradiation with UVB initiated efficient photocycloreversion of the coumarin dimers, causing polymer degradation within minutes under UVB light or days under sunlight exposure. Our synthetic strategy may pave the way to insert photolabile linkages into vinylic polymers, tuning degradation for specific wavelengths.

RESUMEN

The present study investigated oxidation reactivity and hot lubricity of a sodium silicate melt at different Na2O/SiO2 ratios under elevated temperature stimulation. Static oxidation prevention was achieved at 920 °C when the Na2O/SiO2 ratio reached 1:3 (trisilicate) and 1:2 (disilicate), but it started to deteriorate in the case of 1:1 (metasilicate). At a high concentration of sodium (metasilicate), a severe corrosion reaction between the melt and oxide took place that resulted in a composite coating on the steel substrate. This high-temperature reaction accelerated the formation of ionic charges from the steel base and promoted oxidation. However, friction and wear reduction is proportional to an increase in the sodium oxide fraction. Metasilicate (1:1) exhibited excellent lubricity under the hot frictional test at 920 °C compared to other lubricants. It was due to the formation of the sodium-saturated surfaces and an amorphous silica layer, which was associated with the high-temperature reactivity of sodium toward the oxide surface. In addition, the NaFeO2-Fe2O3 composite film, as the reaction product of individual sodium charge and oxide, plays a significant role in maintaining the tribofilm stability for metasilicate, which was not present for disilicate. This study advances the understanding of how sodium-containing compounds perform oxidation prevention and generate lubricity at hot rubbed surfaces.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The global scale-up of antiretroviral therapy included extensive training and onsite support to build the capacity of HIV health care workers. However, traditional efforts aimed at strengthening knowledge and skills often are not successful at improving gaps in the key health systems required for sustaining high quality care. METHODS: We trained and mentored existing staff of the Son La provincial health department and provincial HIV clinic to work as a provincial coaching team (PCT) to provide integrated coaching in clinical HIV skills and quality improvement (QI) to the HIV clinics in the province. Nine core indicators were measured through chart extraction by clinic and provincial staff at baseline and at 6 month intervals thereafter. Coaching from the team to each of the clinics, in both QI and clinical skills, was guided by results of performance measurements, gap analyses, and resulting QI plans. RESULTS: After 18 months, the PCT had successfully spread QI activities, and was independently providing regular coaching to the provincial general hospital clinic and six of the eight district clinics in the province. The frequency and type of coaching was determined by performance measurement results. Clinics completed a mean of five QI projects. Quality of HIV care was improved throughout all clinics with significant increases in seven of the indicators. Overall both the PCT activities and clinic performance were sustained after integration of the model into the Vietnam National QI Program. CONCLUSIONS: We successfully built capacity of a team of public sector health care workers to provide integrated coaching in both clinical skills and QI across a province. The PCT is a feasible and effective model to spread and sustain quality activities and improve HIV care services in a decentralized rural setting.

RESUMEN

The present study investigated the influence of 3D multimodal visualization and learning rehearsal on memory recall. Participants (N = 175 college students ranging from 21 to 25 years) were assigned to different training conditions and rehearsal processes to learn a list of 14 terms associated with construction of a wood-frame house. They then completed a memory test determining their cognitive ability to free recall the definitions of the 14 studied terms immediately after training and rehearsal. The audiovisual modality training condition was associated with the highest accuracy, and the visual- and auditory-modality conditions with lower accuracy rates. The no-training condition indicated little learning acquisition. A statistically significant increase in performance accuracy for the audiovisual condition as a function of rehearsal suggested the relative importance of rehearsal strategies in 3D observational learning. Findings revealed the potential application of integrating virtual reality and cognitive sciences to enhance learning and teaching effectiveness.

RESUMEN

Organic compounds are widespread pollutants in wastewater, causing significant risks for living organisms. In terms of advanced oxidation processes, photocatalysis is known as an effective technology for the oxidation and mineralization of numerous non-biodegradable organic contaminants. The underlying mechanisms of photocatalytic degradation can be explored through kinetic studies. In previous works, Langmuir-Hinshelwood and pseudo-first-order models were commonly applied to fit batch-mode experimental data, revealing critical kinetic parameters. However, the application or combination conditions of these models were inconsistent or ignored. This paper briefly reviews kinetic models and various factors influencing the kinetics of photocatalytic degradation. In this review, kinetic models are also systemized by a new approach to establish a general concept of a kinetic model for the photocatalytic degradation of organic compounds in an aqueous solution.

RESUMEN

The intramodal relation between perceptual similarity and categorization performance in a psychological space, as indicated by multidimensional scaling (MDS) analysis of similarity judgments, was explored. Participants learned to classify transformed object shapes into three categories either visually or haptically via different training procedures (either random or systematic), followed by a transfer test. Learning modulated the psychological spaces, but this effect was more prevalent with haptic than with visual tasks. A prototype model for similarity ratings was illustrated in MDS space. The prototypes were multidimensionally scaled at the center of a category, rather than mirroring the bidirectional paths of their origins. Although they converged at the apex of two transformational trajectories, the category prototypes anchored at the centroid of their respective categories and became more structured as a function of learning. The reduced tendency to make errors (i.e., higher accuracy) in recognizing and classifying the category prototypes suggested that prototypical representation of a category abstracted from exemplar averaging functioned more as novel, rather than familiar, information. Findings were discussed in terms of transformational knowledge, categorical representation in three-dimensional (3D) space, and intramodal visual and haptic similarity.

RESUMEN

There is a growing body of literature supporting the utilization of machine learning (ML) to improve diagnosis and prognosis tools of cardiovascular disease. The current study was to investigate the impact that the ML framework may have on the sensitivity of predicting the presence or absence of congenital heart disease (CHD) using fetal echocardiography. A comprehensive fetal echocardiogram including 2D cardiac chamber quantification, valvar assessments, assessment of great vessel morphology, and Doppler-derived blood flow interrogation was recorded. The postnatal echocardiogram was used to ascertain the diagnosis of CHD. A random forest (RF) algorithm with a nested tenfold cross-validation was used to train models for assessing the presence of CHD. The study population was derived from a database of 3910 singleton fetuses with maternal age of 28.8 ± 5.2 years and gestational age at the time of fetal echocardiography of 22.0 weeks (IQR 21-24). The proportion of CHD was 14.1% for the studied cohort confirmed by post-natal echocardiograms. Our proposed RF-based framework provided a sensitivity of 0.85, a specificity of 0.88, a positive predictive value of 0.55 and a negative predictive value of 0.97 to detect the CHD with the mean of mean ROC curves of 0.94 and the mean of mean PR curves of 0.84. Additionally, six first features, including cardiac axis, peak velocity of blood flow across the pulmonic valve, cardiothoracic ratio, pulmonary valvar annulus diameter, right ventricular end-diastolic diameter, and aortic valvar annulus diameter, are essential features that play crucial roles in adding more predictive values to the model in detecting patients with CHD. ML using RF can provide increased sensitivity in prenatal CHD screening with very good performance. The incorporation of ML algorithms into fetal echocardiography may further standardize the assessment for CHD.

RESUMEN

Si photonics has an immense potential for the development of compact and low-loss opto-electronic oscillators (OEO), with applications in radar and wireless communications. However, current Si OEO have shown a limited performance. Si OEO relying on direct conversion of intensity modulated signals into the microwave domain yield a limited tunability. Wider tunability has been shown by indirect phase-modulation to intensity-modulation conversion. However, the reported tuning range is lower than 4 GHz. Here, we propose a new approach enabling Si OEOs with wide tunability and direct intensity-modulation to microwave conversion. The microwave signal is created by the beating between an optical source and single sideband modulation signal, selected by an add-drop ring resonator working as an optical bandpass filter. The tunability is achieved by changing the wavelength spacing between the optical source and a resonance peak of the resonator. Based on this concept, we experimentally demonstrate microwave signal generation between 6 GHz and 18 GHz, the widest range for a Si-micro-ring-based OEO. Moreover, preliminary results indicate that the proposed Si OEO provides precise refractive index monitoring, with a sensitivity of 94350 GHz/RIU and a potential limit of detection of only 10-8 RIU, opening a new route for the implementation of high-performance Si photonic sensors.

RESUMEN

The reaction of 2,5-dimethylfuran and ethylene to produce p-xylene represents a potentially important route for the conversion of biomass to high-value organic chemicals. Current preparation methods suffer from low selectivity and produce a number of byproducts. Using modern separation and analytical techniques, the structure of many of the byproducts produced in this reaction when HY zeolite is employed as a catalyst has been identified. From these data, a detailed reaction network is proposed demonstrating that hydrolysis and electrophilic alkylation reactions compete with the desired Diels-Alder/dehydration sequence. This information will allow the rational identification of more selective catalysts and more selective reaction conditions.
